We present the localization and host galaxies of one repeating and two apparently non-repeating Fast Radio Bursts. FRB20180301A was detected and localized with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array to a star-forming galaxy at $z=0.3304$. FRB20191228A, and FRB20200906A were detected and localized by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder to host galaxies at $z=0.2430$ and $z=0.3688$, respectively. We combine these with 13 other well-localized FRBs in the literature, and analyze the host galaxy properties. We find no significant differences in the host properties of repeating and apparently non-repeating FRBs. FRB hosts are moderately star-forming, with masses slightly offset from the star-forming main-sequence. Star formation and low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) emission are major sources of ionization in FRB host galaxies, with the former dominant in repeating FRB hosts. FRB hosts do not track stellar mass and star formation as seen in field galaxies (more than 95% confidence). FRBs are rare in massive red galaxies, suggesting that progenitor formation channels are not solely dominated by delayed channels which lag star formation by Gigayears. The global properties of FRB hosts are indistinguishable from core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) hosts, and the spatial offset (from galaxy centers) of FRBs is mostly inconsistent with that of the Galactic neutron star population (95% confidence). The spatial offsets of FRBs (normalized to the galaxy effective radius) also differ from those of globular clusters (GCs) in late- and early-type galaxies with 95% confidence., 27 pages, 12 figures, 8 tables. We examine the properties of damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) emerging from a single set of cosmological initial conditions in two state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamic simulations: {\sc Simba} and {\sc Technicolor Dawn}. The former includes star formation and black hole feedback treatments that yield a good match with low-redshift galaxy properties, while the latter uses multi-frequency radiative transfer to model an inhomogeneous ultraviolet background (UVB) self-consistently and is calibrated to match the Thomson scattering optical depth, UVB amplitude, and Ly-$\alpha$ forest mean transmission at $z>5$. Both simulations are in reasonable agreement with the measured stellar mass and star formation rate functions at $z\geq 3$, and both reproduce the observed neutral hydrogen cosmological mass density, $\Omega_{\rm HI}(z)$. However, the DLA abundance and metallicity distribution are sensitive to the galactic outflows' feedback and the UVB amplitude. Adopting a strong UVB and/or slow outflows under-produces the observed DLA abundance, but yields broad agreement with the observed DLA metallicity distribution. By contrast, faster outflows eject metals to larger distances, yielding more metal-rich DLAs whose observational selection may be more sensitive to dust bias. The DLA metallicity distribution in models adopting an ${\rm H}_2$-regulated star formation recipe includes a tail extending to $[M/H] \ll -3$, lower than any DLA observed to date, owing to curtailed star formation in low-metallicity galaxies. Our results show that DLA observations play an imporant role in constraining key physical ingredients in galaxy formation models, complementing traditional ensemble statistics such as the stellar mass and star formation rate functions., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The physical and chemical properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z\gtrsim6$ have been studied successfully through the absorption in the spectra of background Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs). One of the most crucial questions is to investigate the nature and location of the source galaxies that give rise to these early metal absorbers. Theoretical models suggest that momentum-driven outflows from typical star-forming galaxies can eject metals into the CGM and the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z=5-6. Deep, dedicated surveys have searched for Ly$\alpha$ emission associated with strong CIV absorbers at $z\approx 6$, but only a few Ly$\alpha$ emitter candidates have been detected. Interpreting these detections is moreover ambiguous because Ly$\alpha$ is a resonant line, raising the need for complementary techniques for detecting absorbers' host galaxies. Here, using Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), we report a [C II] 158$\mu$m emitter associated with a strong low-ionization absorber, OI, at $z=5.978$. The projected impact parameter between OI and [C II] emitter is 20.0 kpc. The measured [C II] luminosity is $7.0\times 10^7$ solar luminosities. Fast Radio Burst (FRB) dispersion measures (DMs) record the presence of ionized baryons that are otherwise invisible to other techniques enabling resolution of the matter distribution in the cosmic web. In this work, we aim to estimate the contribution to FRB 180924 DM from foreground galactic halos. Localized by ASKAP to a massive galaxy, this sightline is notable for an estimated cosmic web contribution to the DM ($\rm DM_{cosmic} = 220~pc~cm^{-3}$), which is less than the average value at the host redshift ($\rm z = 0.3216$) estimated from the Macquart relation ($280~\rm pc~cm^{-3}$). In the favored models of the cosmic web, this suggests few intersections with foreground halos at small impact parameters ($\lesssim 100$ kpc). To test this hypothesis, we carried out spectroscopic observations of the field galaxies within $\sim$1' of the sightline with VLT/MUSE and Keck/LRIS. Furthermore, we developed a probabilistic methodology that leverages photometric redshifts derived from wide-field DES and WISE imaging. We conclude that there is no galactic halo that closely intersects the sightline and also that the net DM contribution from halos, $\rm DM_{halos}< 45~pc~cm^{-3}$ (95 % c.l.). This value is lower than the $\rm DM_{halos}$ estimated from an "average" sightline ($121~\rm pc~cm^{-3}$) using the Planck $\Lambda CDM$ model and the Aemulus halo mass function and reasonably explains its low $\rm DM_{cosmic}$ value. We conclude that FRB 180924 represents the predicted majority of sightlines in the universe with no proximate foreground galactic halos. We present the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) localization and follow-up observations of the host galaxy of the repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source, FRB20201124A, the fifth such extragalactic repeating FRB with an identified host. From spectroscopic observations using the 6.5-m MMT Observatory, we derive a redshift of $z=0.0979 \pm 0.0001$, a star formation rate inferred from H$\alpha$ emission of SFR(H$\alpha$) $\approx 2.1 M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and a gas-phase metallicity of 12+log(O/H)$\approx 9.0$. By jointly modeling the 12-filter optical-mid-infrared (MIR) photometry and spectroscopy of the host, we infer a median stellar mass of $\approx 2 \times 10^{10} M_{\odot}$, internal dust extinction of $A_V\approx 1-1.5$ mag, and a mass-weighted stellar population age of $\approx 5-6$ Gyr. Connecting these data to the radio and X-ray observations, we cannot reconcile the broad-band behavior with strong AGN activity and instead attribute the dominant source of persistent radio emission to star formation, likely originating from the circumnuclear region of the host. The modeling also indicates a hot dust component contributing to the MIR luminosity at a level of $\approx 10-30\%$. We model the host galaxy's star formation and mass assembly histories, finding that the host assembled $>90\%$ of its mass by 1 Gyr ago and exhibited a fairly constant SFR for most of its existence, with no clear evidence of past star-burst activity., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables. The problem of anomaly detection in astronomical surveys is becoming increasingly important as data sets grow in size. We present the results of an unsupervised anomaly detection method using a Wasserstein generative adversarial network (WGAN) on nearly one million optical galaxy images in the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. The WGAN learns to generate realistic HSC-like galaxies that follow the distribution of the data set; anomalous images are defined based on a poor reconstruction by the generator and outlying features learned by the discriminator. We find that the discriminator is more attuned to potentially interesting anomalies compared to the generator, and compared to a simpler autoencoder-based anomaly detection approach, so we use the discriminator-selected images to construct a high-anomaly sample of $\sim$13,000 objects. We propose a new approach to further characterize these anomalous images: we use a convolutional autoencoder to reduce the dimensionality of the residual differences between the real and WGAN-reconstructed images and perform UMAP clustering on these. We report detected anomalies of interest including galaxy mergers, tidal features, and extreme star-forming galaxies. A follow-up spectroscopic analysis of one of these anomalies is detailed in the Appendix; we find that it is an unusual system most likely to be a metal-poor dwarf galaxy with an extremely blue, higher-metallicity HII region. We introduce a new method to estimate the probability that an extragalactic transient source is associated with a candidate host galaxy. This approach relies solely on simple observables: sky coordinates and their uncertainties, galaxy fluxes and angular sizes. The formalism invokes Bayes' rule to calculate the posterior probability P(O_i|x) from the galaxy prior P(O), observables x, and an assumed model for the true distribution of transients in/around their host galaxies. Using simulated transients placed in the well-studied COSMOS field, we consider several agnostic and physically motivated priors and offset distributions to explore the method sensitivity. We then apply the methodology to the set of 13~fast radio bursts (FRBs) localized with an uncertainty of several arcseconds. Our methodology finds nine of these are securely associated to a single host galaxy, P(O_i|x)>0.95. We examine the observed and intrinsic properties of these secure FRB hosts, recovering similar distributions as previous works. Furthermore, we find a strong correlation between the apparent magnitude of the securely identified host galaxies and the estimated cosmic dispersion measures of the corresponding FRBs, which results from the Macquart relation. Future work with FRBs will leverage this relation and other measures from the secure hosts as priors for future associations. The methodology is generic to transient type, localization error, and image quality. We encourage its application to other transients where host galaxy associations are critical to the science, e.g. gravitational wave events, gamma-ray bursts, and supernovae. Constraints on the time-scales of quasar activity are key to understanding the formation and growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), quasar triggering mechanisms, and possible feedback effects on their host galaxies. However, observational estimates of this so-called quasar lifetime are highly uncertain (t_Q~10^4-10^9 yr), because most methods are indirect and involve many model-dependent assumptions. Direct evidence of earlier activity is gained from the higher ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the quasar environs, observable as enhanced Ly$\alpha$ transmission in the so-called proximity zone. Due to the ~30 Myr equilibration time-scale of HeII in the z~3 IGM, the size of the HeII proximity zone depends on the time the quasar had been active before our observation t_on30 Myr that does not depend on quasar luminosity, black hole mass, or Eddington ratio. These results point to episodic quasar activity over a long duty cycle, but do not rule out substantial SMBH growth during phases of radiative inefficiency or obscuration., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present observations and detailed characterizations of five new host galaxies of fast radio bursts (FRBs) discovered with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and localized to $\lesssim 1''$. Combining these galaxies with FRB hosts from the literature, we introduce criteria based on the probability of chance coincidence to define a sub-sample of 10 highly-confident associations (at $z=0.03-0.52$), three of which correspond to known repeating FRBs. Overall, the FRB host galaxies exhibit a broad, continuous range of color ($M_u-M_r = 0.9 - 2.0$), stellar mass ($M_\star = 10^{8} - 6\times 10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$), and star-formation rate (${\rm SFR} = 0.05 - 10\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$) spanning the full parameter space occupied by $z99\%$ c.l.). We measure a median offset of 3.3 kpc from the FRB to the estimated center of the host galaxies and compare the host-burst offset distribution and other properties with the distributions of long- and short-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs and SGRBs), core-collapse supernovae (CC-SNe), and Type Ia SNe. This analysis rules out galaxies hosting LGRBs (faint, star-forming galaxies) as common hosts for FRBs ($>95\%$ c.l.). Other transient channels (SGRBs, CC- and Type Ia SNe) have host galaxy properties and offsets consistent with the FRB distributions. We present a study of the metal-enriched cool halo gas traced by MgII absorption around 228 galaxies at z~0.8-1.5 within 28 quasar fields from the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey. We present the discovery and subarcsecond localization of a new Fast Radio Burst with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and realfast search system. The FRB was discovered on 2019 June 14 with a dispersion measure of 959 pc/cm3. This is the highest DM of any localized FRB and its measured burst fluence of 0.6 Jy ms is less than nearly all other FRBs. The source is not detected to repeat in 15 hours of VLA observing and 153 hours of CHIME/FRB observing. We describe a suite of statistical and data quality tests we used to verify the significance of the event and its localization precision. Follow-up optical/infrared photometry with Keck and Gemini associate the FRB to a pair of galaxies with $\rm{r}\sim23$ mag. The false-alarm rate for radio transients of this significance that are associated with a host galaxy is roughly $3\times10^{-4}\ \rm{hr}^{-1}$. The two putative host galaxies have similar photometric redshifts of $z_{\rm{phot}}\sim0.6$, but different colors and stellar masses. Comparing the host distance to that implied by the dispersion measure suggests a modest (~ 50 pc/cm3) electron column density associated with the FRB environment or host galaxy/galaxies., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journals (ApJ) and revised for referee comments

We measure the effective opacity ($\tau_{eff}$) of the Intergalactic Medium (IGM) from the composite spectra of 281 Lyman-Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the redshift range $2 \lesssim z \lesssim 3$. Our spectra are taken from the COSMOS Lyman-Alpha Mapping And Tomographic Observations (CLAMATO) survey derived from the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) on the W.M. Keck I telescope. We generate composite spectra in two redshift intervals and fit them with spectral energy distribution (SED) models composed of simple stellar populations. Extrapolating these SED models into the Ly$\alpha$ forest, we measure the effective Ly$\alpha$ opacity ($\tau_{eff}$) in the $2.02 \leq z \leq 2.44$ range. At $z = 2.22$, we estimate $\tau_{eff} = 0.159 \pm 0.001$ from a power-law fit to the data. Post starburst E+A galaxies are systems that hosted a powerful starburst that was quenched abruptly. Simulations suggest that these systems provide the missing link between major merger ULIRGs and red and dead ellipticals, where AGN feedback is responsible for the expulsion or destruction of the molecular gas. However, many details remain unresolved and little is known about AGN-driven winds in this short-lived phase. We present spatially-resolved IFU spectroscopy with MUSE/VLT of SDSS J124754.95-033738.6, a post starburst E+A galaxy with a recent starburst that started 70 Myrs ago and ended 30 Myrs ago, with a peak SFR of $\sim 150\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}/yr}$. We detect disturbed gas throughout the entire field of view, suggesting triggering by a minor merger. We detect fast-moving multi-phased gas clouds, embedded in a double-cone face-on outflow, which are traced by ionized emission lines and neutral NaID \emph{emission} and absorption lines. We find remarkable similarities between the kinematics, spatial extents, and line luminosities of the ionized and neutral gas phases, and propose a model in which they are part of the same outflowing clouds, which are exposed to both stellar and AGN radiation. Our photoionization model provides consistent ionized line ratios, NaID absorption optical depths and EWs, and dust reddening. Using the model, we estimate, for the first time, the neutral-to-ionized gas mass ratio (about 20), the sodium neutral fraction, and the size of the outflowing clouds. Modern cosmology predicts that matter in our Universe has assembled today into a vast network of filamentary structures colloquially termed the Cosmic Web. Because this matter is either electromagnetically invisible (i.e., dark) or too diffuse to image in emission, tests of this cosmic web paradigm are limited. Wide-field surveys do reveal web-like structures in the galaxy distribution, but these luminous galaxies represent less than 10% of baryonic matter. Statistics of absorption by the intergalactic medium (IGM) via spectroscopy of distant quasars support the model yet have not conclusively tied the diffuse IGM to the web. Here, we report on a new method inspired by the Physarum polycephalum slime mold that is able to infer the density field of the Cosmic Web from galaxy surveys. Applying our technique to galaxy and absorption-line surveys of the local Universe, we demonstrate that the bulk of the IGM indeed resides in the Cosmic Web. From the outskirts of Cosmic Web filaments, at approximately the cosmic mean matter density (rho_m) and approx. 5 virial radii from nearby galaxies, we detect an increasing H I absorption signature towards higher densities and the circumgalactic medium, to approx. 200 rho_m. Despite existing constraints, it remains possible that up to $35\%$ of all dark matter is comprised of compact objects, such as the black holes in the 10-100\,M$_\odot$ range whose existence has been confirmed by LIGO. The strong gravitational lensing of transients such as FRBs and GRBs has been suggested as a more sensitive probe for compact dark matter than intensity fluctuations observed in microlensing experiments. Recently ASKAP has reported burst substructure down to $15\mu$s timescales in FRBs in the redshift range $0.3-0.5$. We investigate here the implications of this for the detectability of compact dark matter by FRBs. We find that a sample size of $\sim130$ FRBs would be required to constrain compact dark matter to less than the existing 35$\%$ limit with 95$\%$ confidence, if it were distributed along $\gtrsim 1\,$Gpc-long FRB sightlines through the cosmic web. Conversely, existing constraints on the fraction of compact dark matter permit as many as 1 in $\approx 40$ of all $z \lesssim 0.4$ FRBs to exhibit micro-lensed burst structure. Approximately $170$ FRBs intercepting halos within $\sim 50\,$kpc would be required to exclude the fraction of compact dark matter in each intercepted halo to a similar level. Furthermore, we consider the cumulative effects of lensing of the FRB signal by a macroscopic dark matter distribution. We conclude that lensing from a uniform distribution of compact objects is likely not observable, but suggest that FRBs may set meaningful limits on power-law distributions of dark matter., Comment: 3 Figures, 1 table

We have developed a new coherent dedispersion mode to study the emission of Fast Radio Bursts that trigger the voltage capture capability of the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) interferometer. In principle the mode can probe emission timescales down to 3 ns with full polarimetric information preserved. Enabled by the new capability, here we present a spectropolarimetric analysis of FRB 181112 detected by ASKAP, localized to a galaxy at redshift 0.47. At microsecond time resolution the burst is resolved into four narrow pulses with a rise time of just $15 \mu$s for the brightest. The pulses have a diversity of morphology, but do not show evidence for temporal broadening by turbulent plasma along the line of sight, nor is there any evidence for periodicity in their arrival times. The pulses are highly polarized (up to 95%), with the polarization position angle varying both between and within pulses. The pulses have apparent rotation measures that vary by $15\pm 2\, {\rm rad \,m^{-2}}$ and apparent dispersion measures that vary by $0.041\pm 0.004\,{\rm pc\,cm^{-3}}$. Conversion between linear and circular polarization is observed across the brightest pulse. We conclude that the FRB 181112 pulses are most consistent with being a direct manifestation of the emission process or the result of propagation through a relativistic plasma close to the source. This demonstrates that our method, which facilitates high-time-resolution polarimetric observations of FRBs, can be used to study not only burst emission processes, but also a diversity of propagation effects present on the gigaparsec paths they traverse., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters; 13 pages, 5 figures

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-scale radio pulses, which originate in distant galaxies and are produced by unknown sources. The mystery remains partially because of the typical difficulty in localising FRBs to host galaxies. Accurate localisations delivered by the Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients (CRAFT) survey now provide an opportunity to study the host galaxies and potential transient counterparts of FRBs at a large range of wavelengths. In this work, we investigate whether the first three FRBs accurately localised by CRAFT have supernova-like transient counterparts. We obtained two sets of imaging epochs with the Very Large Telescope for three host galaxies, one soon after the burst detection and one several months later. After subtracting these images no optical counterparts were identified in the associated FRB host galaxies, so we instead place limits on the brightness of any potential optical transients. A Monte Carlo approach, in which supernova light curves were modelled and their base properties randomised, was used to estimate the probability of a supernova associated with each FRB going undetected. We present initial results from the \textit{COS and Gemini Mapping the Circumgalactic Medium} (\mbox{CGMCGM} $\equiv$ CGM$^{2}$) survey. The CGM$^{2}$ survey consists of 1689 galaxies, all with high-quality Gemini GMOS spectra, within 1 Mpc of twenty-two $z \lesssim 1$ quasars, all with S/N$\sim$10 {\emph{HST/COS}} G130M$+$G160M spectra. For 572 of these galaxies having stellar masses $10^{7} M_{\odot} < M_{\star} < 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ and $z \lesssim 0.5$, we show that the \ion{H}{1} covering fraction above a threshold of \NHI$>10^{14} $cm$^{-2}$ is $\gtrsim 0.5$ within 1.5 virial radii ($R_{\rm vir} \sim R_{200m}$). We examine the \ion{H}{1} kinematics and find that the majority of absorption lies within $\pm$ 250 km s$^{-1}$ of the galaxy systemic velocity. We examine \ion{H}{1} covering fractions over a range of impact parameters to infer a characteristic size of the CGM, $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$, as a function of galaxy mass. $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$ is the impact parameter at which the probability of observing an absorber with \NHI $>$ 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ is $>$ 50\%. In this framework, the radial extent of the CGM of $M_{\star} > 10^{9.9} M_{\odot}$ galaxies is $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 346^{+57}_{-53}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.2R_{\rm vir}$. Intermediate-mass galaxies with $10^{9.2} < M_{\star}/M_{\odot} < 10^{9.9}$ have an extent of $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 353^{+64}_{-50}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 2.4R_{\rm vir}$. Low-mass galaxies, $M_{\star} < 10^{9.2} M_{\odot}$, show a smaller physical scale $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 177_{-65}^{+70}$ kpc and extend to $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.6R_{\rm vir}$. Our analysis suggests that using $R_{\rm vir}$ as a proxy for the characteristic radius of the CGM likely underestimates its extent., 30 pages, 14 figures. Submitted to ApJ, Comments welcome

We introduce a new technique to constrain the line-of-sight integrated electron density of our Galactic halo $\text{DM}_\text{MW,halo}$ through analysis of the observed dispersion measure distributions of pulsars $\text{DM}_\text{pulsar}$ and fast radio bursts $\text{DM}_\text{FRB}$. We model these distributions, correcting for the Galactic interstellar medium, with kernel density estimation---well-suited to the small data regime---to find lower/upper bounds to the corrected $\text{DM}_\text{pulsar}$/$\text{DM}_\text{FRB}$ distributions: $\max[\text{DM}_\text{pulsar}] \approx 7\pm2 \text{ (stat)} \pm 9 \text{ (sys) pc cm}^{-3}$ and $\min[\text{DM}_\text{FRB}] \approx 63^{+27}_{-21} \text{ (stat)} \pm 9 \text{ (sys) pc cm}^{-3}$. Using bootstrap resampling to estimate uncertainties, we set conservative limits on the Galactic halo dispersion measure $-2 < \text{DM}_\text{MW,halo} < 123 \text{pc cm}^{-3}$ (95\% c.l.). The upper limit is especially conservative because it may include a non-negligible contribution from the FRB host galaxies and a non-zero contribution from the cosmic web. It strongly disfavors models where the Galaxy has retained the majority of its baryons with a density profile tracking the presumed dark matter density profile. Last, we perform Monte Carlo simulations of larger FRB samples to validate our technique and assess the sensitivity of ongoing and future surveys. We recover bounds of several tens $\text{pc cm}^{-3}$ which may be sufficient to test whether the Galaxy has retained a majority of its baryonic mass. We estimate that a sample of several thousand FRBs will significantly tighten constraints on $\text{DM}_\text{MW,halo}$ and offer a valuable complement to other analyses., 15 pages, 6 figures

We present high spatial-resolution (~2kpc) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of [CII] 158um and dust-continuum emission from a galaxy at z=3.7978 selected by its strong HI absorption (a damped Lya absorber, DLA) against a background QSO. Our ALMA images reveal a pair of star-forming galaxies separated by ~6kpc (projected) undergoing a major merger. Between these galaxies is a third emission component with highly elevated (2x) [CII] 158um emission relative to the dust continuum, which is likely to arise from stripped gas associated with the merger. This merger of two otherwise-normal galaxies is not accompanied by enhanced star-formation, contrary to mergers detected in most luminosity-selected samples. The DLA associated with the merger exhibits extreme kinematics, with a velocity width for the low-ionization metal lines of Dv90~470km/s that spans the velocity spread revealed in the [CII] 158um emission. We propose that DLAs with high Dv90 values are a signpost of major mergers in normal galaxies at high redshifts, and use the distribution of the velocity widths of metal lines in high-z DLAs to provide a rough estimate the fraction of z>3 galaxies that are undergoing a major merger., Published in ApJL: https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2019ApJ...886L..35P/abstract

We test the hypothesis that environments play a key role in enabling the growth of enormous radio structures spanning more than 700 kpc, an extreme population of radio galaxies called giant radio galaxies (GRGs). To achieve this, we explore (1) the relationships between the occurrence of GRGs and the surface number density of surrounding galaxies, including satellite galaxies and galaxies from neighboring halos, as well as (2) the GRG locations towards large-scale structures. The analysis is done by making use of a homogeneous sample of 110 GRGs detected from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey in combination with photometric galaxies from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys and a large-scale filament catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our results show that the properties of galaxies around GRGs are similar with that around the two control samples, consisting of galaxies with optical colors and luminosity matched to the properties of the GRG host galaxies. Additionally, the properties of surrounding galaxies depend on neither their relative positions to the radio jet/lobe structures nor the sizes of GRGs. We also find that the locations of GRGs and the control samples with respect to the nearby large-scale structures are consistent with each other. These results demonstrate that there is no correlation between the GRG properties and their environments traced by stars, indicating that external galaxy environments are not the primary cause of the large sizes of the radio structures. Finally, regarding radio feedback, we show that the fraction of blue satellites does not correlate with the GRG properties, suggesting that the current epoch of radio jets have minimal influence on the nature of their surrounding galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, Accepted version (MNRAS)

Combining high time and frequency resolution full-polarisation spectra of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) with knowledge of their host galaxy properties provides an opportunity to study both the emission mechanism generating them and the impact of their propagation through their local environment, host galaxy, and the intergalactic medium. The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope has provided the first ensemble of bursts with this information. In this paper, we present the high time and spectral resolution, full polarisation observations of five localised FRBs to complement the results published for the previously studied ASKAP FRB~181112. We find that every FRB is highly polarised, with polarisation fractions ranging from 80 -- 100\%, and that they are generally dominated by linear polarisation. While some FRBs in our sample exhibit properties associated with an emerging archetype (i.e., repeating or apparently non-repeating), others exhibit characteristic features of both, implying the existence of a continuum of FRB properties. When examined at high time resolution, we find that all FRBs in our sample have evidence for multiple sub-components and for scattering at a level greater than expected from the Milky Way. We find no correlation between the diverse range of FRB properties (e.g., scattering time, intrinsic width, and rotation measure) and any global property of their host galaxy. The most heavily scattered bursts reside in the outskirts of their host galaxies, suggesting that the source-local environment rather than the host interstellar medium is likely the dominant origin of the scattering in our sample., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables, accepted by MNRAS

Post starburst E+A galaxies show indications of a powerful starburst that was quenched abruptly. Their disturbed, bulge-dominated morphologies suggest that they are merger remnants. The more massive E+A galaxies are suggested to be quenched by AGN feedback, yet little is known about AGN-driven winds in this short-lived phase. We present spatially-resolved IFU spectroscopy by the Keck Cosmic Web Imager of SDSS J003443.68+251020.9, at z=0.118. The system consists of two galaxies, the larger of which is a post starburst E+A galaxy hosting an AGN. Our modelling suggests a 400 Myrs starburst, with a peak star formation rate of 120 Msun/yr. The observations reveal stationary and outflowing gas, photoionized by the central AGN. We detect gas outflows to a distance of 17 kpc from the central galaxy, far beyond the region of the stars (about 3 kpc), inside a conic structure with an opening angle of 70 degrees. We construct self-consistent photoionization and dynamical models for the different gas components and show that the gas outside the galaxy forms a continuous flow, with a mass outflow rate of about 24 Msun/yr. The gas mass in the flow, roughly $10^9$ Msun, is larger than the total gas mass within the galaxy, some of which is outflowing too. The continuity of the flow puts a lower limit of 60 Myrs on the duration of the AGN feedback. Such AGN are capable of removing, in a single episode, most of the gas from their host galaxies and expelling enriched material into the surrounding CGM., Comment: submitted to MNRAS; comments are welcome!

We investigate the limitations of statistical absorption measurements with the SDSS optical spectroscopic surveys. We show that changes in the data reduction strategy throughout different data releases have led to a better accuracy at long wavelengths, in particular for sky line subtraction, but a degradation at short wavelengths with the emergence of systematic spectral features with an amplitude of about one percent. We show that these features originate from inaccuracy in the fitting of modeled F-star spectra used for flux calibration. The best-fit models for those stars are found to systematically over-estimate the strength of metal lines and under-estimate that of Lithium. We also identify the existence of artifacts due to masking and interpolation procedures at the wavelengths of the hydrogen Balmer series leading to the existence of artificial Balmer $\alpha$ absorption in all SDSS optical spectra. All these effects occur in the rest-frame of the standard stars and therefore present Galactic longitude variations due to the rotation of the Galaxy. We demonstrate that the detection of certain weak absorption lines reported in the literature are solely due to calibration effects. Cosmological simulations predict that a significant fraction of the low-$z$ baryon budget resides in large-scale filaments in the form of a diffuse plasma at temperatures $T \sim 10^{5} - 10^{7}$ K. However, direct observation of this so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) has been elusive. In the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm, galaxy clusters correspond to the nodes of the cosmic web at the intersection of several large-scale filamentary threads. In previous work, we used HST/COS data to conduct the first survey of broad HI Ly$\alpha$ absorbers (BLAs) potentially produced by WHIM in inter-cluster filaments. We present a high-resolution analysis of the host galaxy of fast radio burst (FRB)~190608, an SB(r)c galaxy at $z=0.11778$ (hereafter HG 190608), to dissect its local environment and its contributions to the FRB properties. Our Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 ultraviolet and visible light image reveals that the subarcsecond localization of FRB~190608 is coincident with a knot of star-formation ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR} = 1.5 \times 10^{-2}~ M_{\odot} \, \rm \, yr^{-1} \, kpc^{-2}$) in the northwest spiral arm of HG~190608. Using H$\beta$ emission present in our Keck Cosmic Web Imager integral field spectrum of the galaxy with a surface brightness of $\mu_{\rm H\beta}= \mathrm{(3.36\pm0.21)\times10^{-17}\;erg\;s^{-1}\;cm^{-2}\;arcsec^{-2}}$, we infer an extinction-corrected H$\alpha$ surface brightness and compute a dispersion measure (DM) from the interstellar medium of HG 190608 of $\rm DM_{\rm Host,ISM} = 94 \pm 38~ \;pc\;cm^{-3}$. The galaxy rotates with a circular velocity $v_{\rm circ} = \rm 141 \pm 8~ km\;s^{-1}$ at an inclination $i_{\mathrm{gas}} = 37 \pm 3^\circ$, giving a dynamical mass $M_{\rm halo}^{\rm dyn} \approx 10^{11.96 \pm 0.08}~M_{\odot}$. This implies a halo contribution to the DM of $\rm DM_{\rm Host,Halo}= \rm 55\pm25 \;pc\;cm^{-3}$ subject to assumptions on the density profile and fraction of baryons retained. From the galaxy rotation curve, we infer a bar-induced pattern speed of $\Omega_p=34\pm 6\;\mathrm{km\;s^{-1}\;kpc^{-1}}$ using linear resonance theory. We then calculate the maximum time since star-formation for a progenitor using the furthest distance to the arm's leading edge within the localization, and find $t_{\mathrm{enc}} = 21_{-6}^{+25}$ Myr. The link between the circum-galactic medium (CGM) and the stellar growth of massive galaxies at high-$z$ depends on the properties of the widespread cold molecular gas. As part of the SUPERCOLD-CGM survey (Survey of Protocluster ELANe Revealing CO/\ci\ in the Ly$\alpha$-Detected CGM), we present the radio-loud QSO Q1228+3128 at $z=2.2218$, which is embedded in an enormous Ly$\alpha$ nebula. ALMA+ACA observations of CO(4-3) reveal both a massive molecular outflow, and a more extended molecular gas reservoir across $\sim$100 kpc in the CGM each containing a mass of M$_{\rm H2}$\,$\sim$\,4$-$5\,$\times$\,10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$. The outflow and molecular CGM are aligned spatially, along the direction of an inner radio jet. After re-analysis of Ly$\alpha$ data of Q1228+3128 from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager, we found that the velocity of the extended CO agrees with the redshift derived from the Ly$\alpha$ nebula and the bulk velocity of the massive outflow. We propose a scenario where the radio source in Q1228+3128 is driving the molecular outflow and perhaps also enriching or cooling the CGM. In addition, we found that the extended CO emission is nearly perpendicular to the extended Ly$\alpha$ nebula spatially, indicating that the two gas phases are not well mixed, and possibly even represent different phenomena (e.g., outflow vs. infall). 11 hours after the detection of gravitational wave source GW170817 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory and Virgo Interferometers, an associated optical transient SSS17a was discovered in the galaxy NGC 4993. While the gravitational wave data indicate GW170817 is consistent with the merger of two compact objects, the electromagnetic observations provide independent constraints of the nature of that system. Here we synthesize all optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of SSS17a collected by the One-Meter Two-Hemisphere collaboration. We find that SSS17a is unlike other known transients. The source is best described by theoretical models of a kilonova consisting of radioactive elements produced by rapid neutron capture (the r-process). We present the cold neutral content (H I and C I gas) of 13 quasar 2175 \AA$ $ dust absorbers (2DAs) at $z$ = 1.6 - 2.5 to investigate the correlation between the presence of the UV extinction bump with other physical characteristics. These 2DAs were initially selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys I - III and followed up with the Keck-II telescope and the Multiple Mirror Telescope as detailed in our Paper I. We perform a correlation analysis between metallicity, redshift, depletion level, velocity width, and explore relationships between 2DAs and other absorption line systems. The 2DAs on average have higher metallicity, higher depletion levels, and larger velocity widths than Damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) or subDLAs. The correlation between [Zn/H] and [Fe/Zn] or [Zn/H] and log$\Delta$V$_{90}$ can be used as alternative stellar mass estimators based on the well-established mass-metallicity relation. The estimated stellar masses of the 2DAs in this sample are in the range of $\sim$ 10$^9$ to $\sim$2 $\times$ 10$^{11}$ $M_{\odot}$ with a median value of $\sim$2 $\times$ 10$^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$. The relationship with other quasar absorption line systems can be described as (1) 2DAs are a subset of Mg II and Fe II absorbers, (2) 2DAs are preferentially metal-strong DLAs/subDLAs, (3) More importantly, all of the 2DAs show C I detections with logN(C I) $>$ 14.0 cm$^{-2}$, (4) 2DAs can be used as molecular gas tracers. Their host galaxies are likely to be chemically enriched, evolved, massive (more massive than typical DLA/subDLA galaxies), and presumably star-forming galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We adopt and analyze results on the incidence and physical properties of damped Ly$\alpha$ systems (DLAs) to predict the astrophysical impact of gas in galaxies on observations of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). Three DLA measures form the basis of this analysis: (i) the HI column density distribution, parameterized as a double power-law; (ii) the incidence of DLAs with redshift (derived here), $\ell(z)=A+B \arctan(z-C)$ with $A=0.236_{-0.021}^{+0.016}, B=0.168_{-0.017}^{+0.010}, C=2.87_{-0.13}^{+0.17}$ and (iii) the electron density, parameterized as a log-normal deviate with mean $10^{-2.6} cm^{-3}$ and dispersion 0.3dex. Synthesizing these results, we estimate that the average rest-frame dispersion measure from the neutral medium of a single, intersecting galaxy is DM$^{NM}_{DLA}=0.25$ pc/cm^3. We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST/WFC3) ultraviolet and infrared observations of eight fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies with sub-arcsecond localizations, including the hosts of three known repeating FRBs. We quantify their spatial distributions and locations with respect to their host galaxy light distributions, finding that they occur at moderate host normalized-offsets of 1.4 $r_e$ ([0.6,2.1] $r_e$; 68% interval), occur on fainter regions of their hosts in terms of IR light, but overall trace the radial distribution of IR light in their galaxies. The FRBs in our tested distribution do not clearly trace the distributions of any other transient population with known progenitors, and are statistically distinct from the locations of LGRBs, H-poor SLSNe, SGRBs, and Ca-rich transients. We further find that most FRBs are not in regions of elevated local star formation rate and stellar mass surface densities in comparison to the mean global values of their hosts. We also place upper limits to the IR flux at the FRB positions of $m_{\rm IR}\gtrsim\!24.8-27.6$~AB~mag, constraining both satellite and background galaxies to luminosities well below the host luminosity of FRB121102. We find that 5/8 FRB hosts exhibit clear spiral arm features in IR light, and that the positions of all well-localized FRBs located in such hosts are consistent with their spiral arms, although not on their brightest regions. We report on the results of multi-wavelength follow-up observations with Gemini, VLA, and ATCA, to search for a host galaxy and any persistent radio emission associated with FRB 180309. This FRB is among the most luminous FRB detections to date, with a luminosity of $> 8.7\times 10^{32}$ erg Hz$^{-1}$ at the dispersion-based redshift upper limit of 0.32. We used the high-significance detection of FRB 180309 with the Parkes Telescope and a beam model of the Parkes Multibeam Receiver to improve the localization of the FRB to a region spanning approximately $\sim2'\times2'$. We aimed to seek bright galaxies within this region to determine the strongest candidates as the originator of this highly luminous FRB. We identified optical sources within the localization region above our r-band magnitude limit of 24.27, fourteen of which have photometric redshifts whose fitted mean is consistent with the redshift upper limit ($z < 0.32$) of our FRB. Two of these galaxies are coincident with marginally detected "persistent" radio sources of flux density 24.3$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ and 22.1$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ respectively. Our redshift-dependent limit on the luminosity of any associated persistent radio source is comparable to the luminosity limits for other localized FRBs. We analyze several properties of the candidate hosts we identified, including chance association probability, redshift, and presence of radio emission, however it remains possible that any of these galaxies could be the host of this FRB. Follow-up spectroscopy on these objects to explore their H$\alpha$ emission and ionization contents, as well as to obtain more precisely measured redshifts, may be able to isolate a single host for this luminous FRB., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures; Accepted for publication in AAS Journals (ApJ)

We present new high-resolution (R~14,000) spectra of the two brightest HeII-transparent quasars in the far-UV (FUV) at z>3.5, HE2QSJ2311-1417 (z=3.70) and HE2QSJ1630+0435 (z=3.81), obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In the predominantly saturated HeII absorption spectra, both sightlines show several isolated resolved (full width at half maximum FWHM>50 km/s) transmission spikes in HeII Ly$\alpha$ and HeII Ly$\beta$. The incidence of such spikes decreases with increasing redshift, but both sightlines show significant spikes at z>3.5, signaling the presence of fully ionized regions in the z>3.5 intergalactic medium (IGM). We employ an automated algorithm to compare the number of detected HeII transmission spikes to predictions from mock spectra created from the outputs of a cubic (100/h cMpc)^3 optically thin Nyx hydrodynamical simulation, assuming a range of UV background photoionization rates $\Gamma_\mathrm{HeII}$. From the incidence of Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ transmission spikes we infer similar photoionization rates of $\Gamma_\mathrm{HeII}=2.0^{+0.6}_{-0.5}\times 10^{-15}$s$^{-1}$ at 3.513.5 along both lines of sight, our observations provide further evidence that HeII reionization had substantially progressed at these redshifts., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ following minor revision; 21 pages, 17 figures

We carried out deep H$\alpha$ narrowband imaging with 10 hours net integrations towards the young protocluster, USS1558$-$003 at $z=2.53$ with the Subaru Telescope. This system is composed of four dense groups with massive local overdensities, traced by 107 H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) with stellar masses and dust-corrected star formation rates down to $1\times10^8$ M$_\odot$ and 3 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$, respectively. We have investigated the environmental dependence of various physical properties within the protocluster by comparing distributions of HAEs in higher and lower densities with a standard Kolmogorov--Smirnov test. At 97\% confidence level, we find enhanced star formation across the star-forming main sequence of HAEs living in the most extreme `supergroup', corresponding to the top quartile of overdensities. Furthermore, we derive distribution functions of H$\alpha$ luminosity and stellar mass in group and intergroup regions, approximately corresponding to 30 times and 8 times higher densities than the general field. As a consequence, we identify by 0.7 and 0.9 dex higher cutoffs in H$\alpha$ luminosity and stellar mass functions in the dense groups, respectively. On the other hand, HAEs in the intergroup environment of the protocluster show similar distribution functions to those of field galaxies despite residing in significant overdensities. In the early phase of cluster formation, as inferred from our results, the densest parts in the protocluster have had an accelerated formation of massive galaxies. We describe the survey for galaxies in the fields surrounding 9 sightlines to far-UV bright, z~1 quasars that define the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH) program. The photometry and spectroscopy that comprise the dataset come from a mixture of public surveys (SDSS, DECaLS) and our dedicated efforts on private facilities (Keck, MMT, LBT). We report the redshifts and stellar masses for 5902 galaxies within ~10 comoving-Mpc (cMpc) of the sightlines with a median of z=0.28 and M_* ~ 10^(10.1) Msun. This dataset, publicly available as the CASBaH specDB, forms the basis of several recent and ongoing CASBaH analyses. Here, we perform a clustering analysis of the galaxy sample with itself (auto-correlation) and against the set of OVI absorption systems (cross-correlation) discovered in the CASBaH quasar spectra with column densities N(O^+5) >= 10^(13.5)/cm^2. For each, we describe the measured clustering signal with a power-law correlation function xi(r) = (r/r_0)^(-gamma) and find that (r_0,gamma) = (5.48 +/- 0.07 h_100^-1 Mpc, 1.33 +/- 0.04) for the auto-correlation and (6.00 +/- 1 h^-1 Mpc, 1.25 +/- 0.18) for galaxy-OVI cross-correlation. We further estimate a bias factor of b_gg = 1.3 +/- 0.1 from the galaxy-galaxy auto-correlation indicating the galaxies are hosted by halos with mass M_halo ~ 10^(12.1 +/- 0.05) Msun. Finally, we estimate an OVI-galaxy bias factor b_OVI = 1.0 +/- 0.1 from the cross-correlation which is consistent with OVI absorbers being hosted by dark matter halos with typical mass M_halo ~ 10^(11) Msun. Future works with upcoming datasets (e.g., CGM^2) will improve upon these results and will assess whether any of the detected OVI arises in the intergalactic medium., 25 pages, 27 figures. PUMA is a proposal for an ultra-wideband, low-resolution and transit interferometric radio telescope operating at $200-1100\,\mathrm{MHz}$. Its design is driven by six science goals which span three science themes: the physics of dark energy (measuring the expansion history and growth of the universe up to $z=6$), the physics of inflation (constraining primordial non-Gaussianity and primordial features) and the transient radio sky (detecting one million fast radio bursts and following up SKA-discovered pulsars). We propose two array configurations composed of hexagonally close-packed 6m dish arrangements with 50% fill factor. The initial 5,000 element 'petite array' is scientifically compelling, and can act as a demonstrator and a stepping stone to the full 32,000 element 'full array'. Viewed as a 21cm intensity mapping telescope, the program has the noise equivalent of a traditional spectroscopic galaxy survey comprised of 0.6 and 2.5 billion galaxies at a comoving wavenumber of $k=0.5\,h\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ spanning the redshift range $z = 0.3 - 6$ for the petite and full configurations, respectively. At redshifts beyond $z=2$, the 21cm technique is a uniquely powerful way of mapping the universe, while the low-redshift range will allow for numerous cross-correlations with existing and upcoming surveys. This program is enabled by the development of ultra-wideband radio feeds, cost-effective dish construction methods, commodity radio-frequency electronics driven by the telecommunication industry and the emergence of sufficient computing power to facilitate real-time signal processing that exploits the full potential of massive radio arrays. The project has an estimated construction cost of 55 and 330 million FY19 USD for the petite and full array configurations. Including R&D, design, operations and science analysis, the cost rises to 125 and 600 million FY19 USD, respectively.

We present a novel absorption line survey using 54 blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs) in the Milky Way halo as background sources for detecting gas flows at the disk-halo interface. Distance measurements to high-latitude ($b$ > 60��) background stars at 3.1-13.4 kpc, combined with unprecedented spatial sampling and spectral resolution, allow us to examine the 3-dimensional spatial distribution and kinematics of gas flows near the disk. We detect absorption signatures of extraplanar CaII and NaI in Keck HIRES spectra and find that their column densities exhibit no trend with distance to the background sources, indicating that these clouds lie within 3.1 kpc of the disk. We calculate covering fractions of $f_{CaII}$ = 63%, $f_{NaI}$ = 26%, and $f_{HI}$ = 52%, consistent with a picture of the CGM that includes multi-phase clouds containing small clumps of cool gas within hotter, more diffuse gas. Our measurements constrain the scale of any substructure within these cool clouds to, 18 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables, and a 10-page appendix with 9 additional figures. Submitted to ApJ

The precise localization (0.1 galaxies has confirmed that the dispersion measures (DMs) of these enigmatic sources afford a new opportunity to probe the diffuse ionized gas around and in between galaxies. In this manuscript, we examine the signatures of gas in dark matter halos (aka halo gas) on DM observations in current and forthcoming FRB surveys. Combining constraints from observations of the high velocity clouds, OVII absorption, and the DM to the Large Magellanic Cloud with hydrostatic models of halo gas, we estimate that our Galactic halo will contribute ${\rm DM}_{\rm MW,halo} \approx 50-80 \rm pc/cm^{-3}$ from the Sun to 200 kpc independent of any contribution from the Galactic ISM. Extending analysis to the Local Group, we demonstrate that M31's halo will be easily detected by high-sample FRB surveys (e.g. CHIME) although signatures from a putative Local Group medium may compete. We then review current empirical constraints on halo gas in distant galaxies and discuss the implications for their DM contributions. We further examine the DM probability distribution function of a population of FRBs at z >> 0 using an updated halo mass function and new models for the halo density profile. Lastly, we illustrate the potential of FRB experiments for resolving the baryonic fraction of halos by analyzing simulated sightlines through the CASBaH survey. We report the serendipitous discovery of an object, UVQS J060819.93-715737.4, with a spectrum dominated by extremely intense, narrow C II emission lines. The spectrum is similar to those of the very rare, late-type [WC11] low-mass Wolf-Rayet stars. Despite the recognition of these stars as a distinct class decades ago, there remains barely a handful of Galactic members, all of which are also planetary-nebula central stars. Although no obvious surrounding nebulosity is present in J0608, [O II], [N II], and [S II] emission suggest the presence of an inconspicuous, low-excitation nebula. There is low-amplitude incoherent photometric variability on timescales of days to years, as well as numerous prominent P Cygni profiles, implying mass loss. There are indications of a binary companion. The star is located on the outskirts of the LMC, and the observed radial velocity (~250 km/s) and proper motion strongly suggest membership. If indeed an LMC member, this is the first extragalactic late [WC] star, and the first with an accurately determined luminosity, as the Galactic examples are too distant for precise parallax determinations. A high-quality, broad-coverage spectrum of the prototype of the late [WC] class, CPD -56 8032, is also presented. We discuss different excitation mechanisms capable of producing the great strength of the C II emission. Numerous autoionizing levels of C II are definitely populated by processes other than dielectronic recombination. Despite the spectacular emission spectra, observational selection makes objects such as these difficult to discover. The MAMMOTH-I Nebula at redshift 2.3 is one of the largest known Ly-alpha nebulae in the Universe, spanning ~440 kpc. Enormous Ly-alpha nebulae like MAMMOTH-I typically trace the densest and most active regions of galaxy formation. Using sensitive low-surface-brightness observations of CO(1-0) with the Very Large Array, we trace the cold molecular gas in the inner 150 kpc of the MAMMOTH-I Nebula. CO is found in four regions that are associated with either galaxies or groups of galaxies that lie inside the nebula. In three of the regions, the CO stretches up to ~30 kpc into the circum-galactic medium (CGM). In the centermost region, the CO has a very low velocity dispersion (FWHM$_{\rm CO}$ ~ 85 km/s), indicating that this gas is dynamically cold. This dynamically cold gas coincides with diffuse restframe optical light in the CGM around a central group of galaxies, as discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope. We argue that this likely represents cooling of settled and enriched gas in the center of MAMMOTH-I. This implies that the dynamically cold gas in the CGM, rather than the obscured AGN, marks the core of the potential well of this Ly-alpha nebula. In total, the CO in the MAMMOTH-I Nebula traces a molecular gas mass of M$_{\rm H2}$ ~ 1.4 ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$/3.6) $\times$ 10$^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$, with roughly 50% of the CO(1-0) emission found in the CGM. We present results from a survey of galaxies in the fields of six z ≥ 3 damped Lyman α (Lyα) systems (DLAs) using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We report a high detection rate of up to ${\approx } 80{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of galaxies within 1000 km s−1 from DLAs and with impact parameters between 25 and 280 kpc. In particular, we discovered five high-confidence Lyα emitters associated with three DLAs, plus up to nine additional detections across five of the six fields. The majority of the detections are at relatively large impact parameters (>50 kpc) with two detections being plausible host galaxies. Among our detections, we report four galaxies associated with the most metal-poor DLA in our sample (Z/Z⊙ = −2.33 ± 0.22), which trace an overdense structure resembling a filament. By comparing our detections with predictions from the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) cosmological simulations and a semi-analytic model designed to reproduce the observed bias of DLAs at z > 2, we conclude that our observations are consistent with a scenario in which a significant fraction of DLAs trace the neutral regions within haloes with a characteristic mass of $M_{\rm h} \approx 10^{11}-10^{12}~\rm M_\odot$, in agreement with the inference made from the large-scale clustering of DLAs. We finally show how larger surveys targeting ≈25 absorbers have the potential of constraining the characteristic masses of haloes hosting high-redshift DLAs with sufficient accuracy to discriminate between different models.

Motivated by the discovery of rare enormous Lyman α nebulae (ELAN) around z ̃ 2 quasars, we initiated a long-term campaign with the MUSE/VLT instrument to directly uncover the astrophysics of the gas around quasars. We present here the first 61 targets under the acronym QSO MUSEUM. These quasars are characterized by a median redshift z = 3.17, absolute i magnitude in the range -29.67 ≤ Mi(z = 2) ≤ -27.03, and different levels of radio-loudness. This sample unveils diverse specimens of Ly α nebulosities extending for tens of kpc around these quasars (average maximum projected distance of 80 kpc) above a surface brightness SB > 8.8 × 10-19 erg s-1 cm-2 arcsec-2(2σ). The bulk of the Ly α emission is within R < 50 kpc, and is characterized by relatively quiescent kinematics, with average velocity dispersions Ly α> < 400 km s-1. Therefore, the motions within all these Ly α nebulosities have amplitudes consistent with gravitational motions expected in dark matter haloes hosting quasars at these redshifts, possibly reflecting the complexity in propagating a fast wind on large scales. Our current data suggest a combination of photoionization and resonant scattering as powering mechanisms of the Ly α emission. We discover the first z ̃ 3 ELAN, confirming a very low probability ({̃ }1{{ per cent}}) of occurrence of such systems at these redshifts. Finally, we discuss the redshift evolution currently seen in extended Ly α emission around radio-quiet quasars from z ̃ 3 to z ̃ 2, concluding that it is possibly linked to a decrease of cool gas mass within the circumgalactic medium of quasars from z ̃ 3 to z ̃ 2, and thus to the balance of cool versus hot media. Overall, QSO MUSEUM opens the path to statistical surveys targeting the gas phases in quasars' haloes along cosmic times.

We characterise ionised gas outflows using a large sample of ~330 high-luminosity (45.5 < log(L_bol/erg s^-1) < 49.0), high-redshift (1.5 < z < 4.0) quasars via their [OIII]4960,5008 emission. The median velocity width of the [OIII] emission line is 1540 kms^-1, increasing with increasing quasar luminosity. Broad, blue-shifted wings are seen in the [OIII] profiles of 42 per cent of the sample. Rest-frame ultraviolet spectra with well-characterised CIV 1550 emission line properties are available for more than 210 quasars, allowing an investigation of the relationship between the Broad Line Region (BLR) and Narrow Line Region (NLR) emission properties. The [OIII] blueshift is correlated with CIV blueshift, even when the dependence of both quantities on quasar luminosity has been taken into account. A strong anti-correlation between the [OIII] equivalent width (EW) and CIV blueshift also exists. Furthermore, [OIII] is very weak, with EW, MNRAS in press

Present-day galaxies are surrounded by cool and enriched halo gas extending to hundreds of kiloparsecs. This halo gas is thought to be the dominant reservoir of material available to fuel future star formation, but direct constraints on its mass and physical properties have been difficult to obtain. We report the detection of a fast radio burst (FRB 181112) with arcsecond precision, which passes through the halo of a foreground galaxy. Analysis of the burst shows the halo gas has low net magnetization and turbulence. We report on a search for the host galaxy of FRB171020, the fast radio burst with the smallest recorded dispersion measure (DM $=114$ pc cm$^{-3}$) of our on-ongoing ASKAP survey. The low DM confines the burst location within a sufficiently small volume to rigorously constrain the identity of the host galaxy. We identify 16 candidate galaxies in the search volume and single out ESO 601-G036, a Sc galaxy at redshift $z=0.00867$, as the most likely host galaxy. UV and optical imaging and spectroscopy reveal this galaxy has a star-formation rate of approximately 0.1 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and oxygen abundance $12 + \log({\rm O/H}) = 8.3 \pm 0.2$, properties remarkably consistent with the galaxy hosting the repeating FRB121102. However, in contrast to FRB121102, follow-up radio observations of ESO 601-G036 show no compact radio emission above a 5$\sigma$ limit of $L_{2.1{\rm GHz}}=3.6\times 10^{19}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. Using radio continuum observations of the field, combined with archival optical imaging data, we find no analog to the persistent radio source associated with FRB121102 within the localization region of FRB171020 out to $z=0.06$. These results suggest that FRBs are not necessarily associated with a luminous and compact radio continuum source., Comment: Submitted to ApJL

We present spatially-resolved spectroscopy from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) of a star-forming galaxy at z=0.6942, which shows emission from the Mg II 2796, 2803 Angstrom doublet in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) extending ~37 kpc at 3-sigma significance in individual spaxels (1-sigma detection limit 4.8 x 10^{-19} erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2). After deconvolution with the seeing, we obtain 5-sigma detections extending for ~31 kpc measured in 7-spaxel (1.1 arcsec^2) apertures. Spaxels covering the galaxy stellar regions show clear P-Cygni-like emission/absorption profiles with the blueshifted absorption extending to relative velocities of v = -800 km/s; however, the P-Cygni profiles give way to pure emission at large radii from the central galaxy. We have performed three-dimensional radiative transfer modeling to infer the geometry and velocity and density profiles of the outflowing gas. We present and make publicly available the third data release (DR3) of the Keck Observatory Database of Ionized Absorption toward Quasars (KODIAQ) survey. KODIAQ DR3 consists of a fully-reduced sample of 727 quasars at 0.1 < z < 6.4 observed with ESI at moderate resolution (4000 < R < 10000). DR3 contains 872 spectra available in flux calibrated form, representing a sum total exposure time of approximately 2.8 megaseconds. These co-added spectra arise from a total of 2753 individual exposures of quasars taken from the Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) in raw form and uniformly processed using a data reduction package made available through the XIDL distribution. DR3 is publicly available to the community, housed as a higher level science product at the KOA and in the igmspec database., 25 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. We explore the prompt magnetar progenitor scenario in the context of fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies demographics and offset distributions. Magnetars are neutron stars with strong magnetic fields on the order of $10^{15}$ G with a short decay lifetime of less than $10^4$ years. Due to their extremely short lifetimes, magnetars should follow the demographics of galaxies according to their current star-formation rate (SFR). Moreover, we hypothesize that magnetars should follow the SFR profile within galaxies, which we assume to follow an exponential profile. We construct a simple model for the host galaxies of magnetars assuming these events track SFR in all galaxies and compare it to observed properties from a sample of \nsecure\ secure FRB hosts. We find the distribution of observed SFRs is inconsistent with the model at $>95\%$ c.l. The offset distribution is consistent with this scenario; however, this could be due to the limited sample size and the seeing limited estimates for the effective radii of the FRB host galaxies. Despite the recent association of an FRB with a magnetar in the Milky Way, magnetars may not be the only source of FRBs in the universe, yet any other successful model must account for the demographics of the FRB host in SFR and their observed galactocentric offsets., Accepted for publication at ApJ Letters

The strongest transitions of Zn and CrII are the most sensitive to relative variations in the fine-structure constant ($\Delta\alpha/\alpha$) among the transitions commonly observed in quasar absorption spectra. They also lie within just 40\AA\ of each other (rest frame), so they are resistant to the main systematic error affecting most previous measurements of $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$: long-range distortions of the wavelength calibration. While Zn and CrII absorption is normally very weak in quasar spectra, we obtained high signal-to-noise, high-resolution echelle spectra from the Keck and Very Large Telescopes of 9 rare systems where it is strong enough to constrain $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$ from these species alone. These provide 12 independent measurements (3 quasars were observed with both telescopes) at redshifts 1.0--2.4, 11 of which pass stringent reliability criteria. These 11 are all consistent with $\Delta\alpha/\alpha=0$ within their individual uncertainties of 3.5--13 parts per million (ppm), with a weighted mean $\Delta\alpha/\alpha = 1.2\pm1.7_{\rm stat}\pm0.9_{\rm sys}$ ppm (1$\sigma$ statistical and systematic uncertainties), indicating no significant cosmological variations in $\alpha$.
