Abstract: The effective prompt response function full width at half maximum, PRF FWHM of 637 ps (obtained from the prompt gamma pairs of 477 keV and 700 keV associated with the yrast 2+ state in 206Po), and 1007 ps (obtained from the Compton gamma pairs of 189 keV and 237 keV associated with the 192Os(18O,16O)194Os 2 neutron transfer reaction) were used in fitting the time difference spectra obtained from the gamma coincident pairsof 206 keV and 374 keV in a symmetrised LaBr3(Ce) associated with the gamma transitions in 192Os, using the Half-life program. The values of half-life measured by fitting these PRF FWHM of 637 ps and 1007 ps separately show an excellent agreement of 282(16) ps and 272(21) ps, respectively, which correspond to the global half-life value of 282(4) ps for the 192Os. The mean value of 277(12) ps from these two measurements was used in calculating the B(E2; IL ->IL-2) of 4233(114) e2fm4, which is equivalent to be 81(19) W.u.

4. Treatment of background in γ-γ fast-timing measurements

Abstract: Background characterisation in γ - γ fast-timing measurements is of essential importance when lifetimes of the order of tens of picoseconds are being measured. In this work, the nature, composition and behaviour of the timing background is extensively discussed and an adaptation of the background subtraction method used in E γ -E γ -E γ cubes to the case of E γ -E γ - Δ T cubes, is presented. This is applied to 252 Cf fission data, showing very low peak-to-background ratios (less than 0.5), collected using a hybrid array made of 51 HPGe detectors from Gammasphere and 25 LaBr 3 (Ce) scintillators . Two different procedures are suggested: the “Interpolation” approach and the “Three Samples” approach. Both were used to measure the lifetime of the 2 + state in 110Ru, and gave τ = 483(38) ps and τ = 445(34) ps, respectively, both within one standard deviation of the literature value of τ l = 462(29) ps. The 2 + state in 114Pd was also measured using the three samples approach and the lifetime obtained was τ = 104(12) ps, consistent with the literature lifetime of τ l = 118(20) ps.

Abstract: The structure of Po-208 populated through the EC/beta(+) decay of At-208 is investigated using gamma-ray spectroscopy at the ISOLDE Decay Station. The presented level scheme contains 27 new excited states and 43 new transitions, as well as a further 50 previously observed. rays which have been (re)assigned a position. The level scheme is compared to shell model calculations. Through this analysis approximately half of the beta-decay strength of At-208 is found to proceed via allowed decay and half via first-forbidden decay. The first-forbidden transitions predominantly populate core excited states at high excitation energies, which is qualitatively understood using shell model considerations. This mass region provides an excellent testing ground for the competition between allowed and first-forbidden beta-decay calculations, important for the detailed understanding of the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements.

Abstract: We report on spectroscopic information and lifetime measurements of even-even neutron-rich Te isotopes. Excited states were populated in fast-neutron induced fission of U238 at the ALTO facility of IJCLab with the LICORNE neutron source and detected using the hybrid ν-ball spectrometer. We provide first results on lifetimes of the 61+ state in Te136 and the (61+), (41+), and (21+) states in Te138 and discuss the results in the context of large-scale shell-model calculations. The level schemes of Te136 and Te138 are revised in terms of lifetimes of their 21+,41+ states and updated information on the (42+) state in Te136 is presented. In addition, previously reported data on spectroscopy and lifetimes in Te134 are reexamined. This work provides new insights into the evolution of collectivity for Te isotopes with N=82,84,86.

Abstract: When a heavy atomic nucleus splits (fission), the resulting fragments are observed to emerge spinning1; this phenomenon has been a mystery in nuclear physics for over 40 years2,3. The internal generation of typically six or seven units of angular momentum in each fragment is particularly puzzling for systems that start with zero, or almost zero, spin. There are currently no experimental observations that enable decisive discrimination between the many competing theories for the mechanism that generates the angular momentum4–12. Nevertheless, the consensus is that excitation of collective vibrational modes generates the intrinsic spin before the nucleus splits (pre-scission). Here we show that there is no significant correlation between the spins of the fragment partners, which leads us to conclude that angular momentum in fission is actually generated after the nucleus splits (post-scission). We present comprehensive data showing that the average spin is strongly mass-dependent, varying in saw-tooth distributions. We observe no notable dependence of fragment spin on the mass or charge of the partner nucleus, confirming the uncorrelated post-scission nature of the spin mechanism. To explain these observations, we propose that the collective motion of nucleons in the ruptured neck of the fissioning system generates two independent torques, analogous to the snapping of an elastic band. A parameterization based on occupation of angular momentum states according to statistical theory describes the full range of experimental data well. This insight into the role of spin in nuclear fission is not only important for the fundamental understanding and theoretical description of fission, but also has consequences for the γ-ray heating problem in nuclear reactors13,14, for the study of the structure of neutron-rich isotopes15,16, and for the synthesis and stability of super-heavy elements17,18. γ-ray spectroscopy experiments on the origin of spin in the products of nuclear fission of spin-zero nuclei suggest that the fission fragments acquire their spin after scission, rather than before.

Abstract: International audience; We report on spectroscopic information and lifetime measurements in the neutron-rich I135,137,139 isotopes. This is the first lifetime data on iodine isotopes beyond N=82. Excited states were populated in fast neutron-induced fission of U238 at the ALTO facility of IJCLab with the LICORNE neutron source and detected using the hybrid ν-ball spectrometer. The level schemes of the I135,137,139 isotopes are revised in terms of excited states with up to maximum spin-parity of (33/2+), populated for the first time in fast neutron-induced fission. We provide first results on the lifetimes of the (9/21+) and (13/21+) states in I137 and I139, and the (17/21+) state in I137. In addition, we give upper lifetime limits for the (11/21+) states in I135−139, the (15/21+) state in I137, the (17/21+) state in I139, and reexamine the (29/21+) state in I137. The isomeric data in I135 are reinvestigated, such as the previously known (15/21+) and (23/21−) isomers with T1/2 of 1.64(14) and 4.6(7) ns, respectively, as obtained in this work. Abstract: Prompt and delayed γ -ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich 94 Kr was performed, as part of the fission campaign at the ALTO facility of the IPN Orsay, using the fast-neutron-induced fission reaction 238 U ( n , f ) in combination with the ν -Ball array, a novel hybrid γ spectrometer for energy and lifetime measurements. Several new yrast and nonyrast transitions were observed for the first time, extending the previously known level scheme. Additionally, we report on the observation of a new short-lived isomer at 3444 keV with a half-life of 32(3) ns. The analysis of the Nilsson orbitals obtained from Gogny cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations suggests a ( 9 − ) spin and an oblate deformation for this isomer corresponding to a two-quasineutron state, indicating an isomeric structure very similar to that of the neighboring isotones 96 Sr and 92 Se

Abstract: Twenty-one two-proton knockout (p; 3p) cross sections from neutron-rich nuclei at ~ 250 MeV/nucleon were measured. For the first time, the angular distribution of the three emitted protons were measured in coincidence with the tracker and hydrogen target MINOS, demonstrating that the (p; 3p) kinematics is consistent with two sequential proton-proton collisions within the projectile nucleus. Ratios of (p; 3p) over (p; 2p) inclusive cross sections follow the trend of other many-proton (neutron) removal reactions, further reinforcing the sequential nature of (p; 3p) in neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract: Here we present new information on the shape evolution of the very neutron-rich ^{92,94}Se nuclei from an isomer-decay spectroscopy experiment at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. High-resolution germanium detectors were used to identify delayed γ rays emitted following the decay of their isomers. New transitions are reported extending the previously known level schemes. The isomeric levels are interpreted as originating from high-K quasineutron states with an oblate deformation of β∼0.25, with the high-K state in ^{94}Se being metastable and K hindered. Following this, ^{94}Se is the lowest-mass neutron-rich nucleus known to date with such a substantial K hindrance. Furthermore, it is the first observation of an oblate K isomer in a deformed nucleus. This opens up the possibility for a new region of K isomers at low Z and at oblate deformation, involving the same neutron orbitals as the prolate orbitals within the classic Z∼72 deformed hafnium region. From an interpretation of the level scheme guided by theoretical calculations, an oblate deformation is also suggested for the ^{94}Se_{60} ground-state band.

Abstract: The β decay of 207Hg into the single-proton-hole nucleus 207Tl has been studied through γ-ray spectroscopy at the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS) with the aim of identifying states resulting from coupling of the πs−11/2, πd−13/2, and πh−111/2 shell model orbitals to the collective octupole vibration. Twenty-two states were observed lying between 2.6 and 4.0 MeV, eleven of which were observed for the first time, and 78 new transitions were placed. Two octupole states (s1/2-coupled) are identified and three more states (d3/2-coupled) are tentatively assigned using spin-parity inferences, while further h11/2-coupled states may also have been observed for the first time. Comparisons are made with state-of-the-art large-scale shell model calculations and previous observations made in this region, and systematic underestimation of the energy of the octupole vibrational states is noted. We suggest that in order to resolve the difference in predicted energies for collective and noncollective t=1 states (t is the number of nucleons breaking the 208Pb core), the effect of t=2 mixing may be reduced for octupole-coupled states. The inclusion of mixing with t=0,2,3 excitations is necessary to replicate all t=1 state energies accurately.

Abstract: We report on the measurement of lifetimes of excited states in the near-mid-shell nuclei Dy164,166 using the gamma-ray coincidence fast-timing method. The nuclei of interest were populated using reactions between an O18 beam and a gold-backed isotopically enriched Dy164 target of thickness 6.3mg/cm2 at primary beam energies of 71, 76, and 80 MeV from the IPN-Orsay laboratory, France. Excited states were populated in Dy164, Dy166, and W178,179 following Coulomb excitation, inelastic nuclear scattering, two-neutron transfer, and fusion-evaporation reaction channels respectively. Gamma rays from excited states were measured using the ν-Ball high-purity germanium (HPGe)-LaBr3 hybrid γ-ray spectrometer with the excited state lifetimes extracted using the fast-timing coincidence method using HPGe-gated LaBr3-LaBr3 triple coincident events. The lifetime of the first Iπ=2+ excited state in Dy166 was used to determine the transition quadrupole deformation of this neutron-rich nucleus for the first time. The experimental methodology was validated by showing consistency with previously determined excited state lifetimes in Dy164. The half-lives of the yrast 2+ states in Dy164 and Dy166 were 2.35(6) and 2.3(2) ns, respectively, corresponding to transition quadrupole moment values of Q0=7.58(9) and 7.5(4) eb, respectively. The lifetime of the yrast 2+ state in Dy166 is consistent with a quenching of nuclear quadrupole deformation at β≈0.35 as the N=104 mid-shell is approached.

Abstract: The NAtional Nuclear Array (NANA) is a LaBr 3 (Ce)-based coincidence gamma-ray spectrometer which can be used to identify, and enhance with respect to the background, signature gamma-ray emissions associated with particular radionuclide decays from a complex multi-component spectrum. Gamma-ray energy coincidence measurements using the NANA have been made using a digital data acquisition system based on CAEN V1751C 1 GHz digitizers. The improved time resolution offered by LaBr 3 (Ce) crystals compared to similar-sized solid state detectors can provide narrow time-correlated, gamma-ray energy coincidence matrices that can be interrogated to select discrete gamma-ray emissions associated with particular radionuclide decays. This paper provides an overview of the operational characteristics of the NANA spectrometer, including energy resolution and full-energy peak efficiency parameters, and provides an example of double and triple gamma-ray coincidence gating on decays associated with the nuclear fuel waste product 134 Cs. The full-energy peak efficiency response of the spectrometer is compared to Monte Carlo GEANT4 simulations.

Abstract: C.M. Shand et al. -- 6 pags., 3 figs., tab. --Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, We report on the measurement of new low-lying states in the neutron-rich Zn nuclei via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. These include the 4 →2 transition in Zn, the 2 →0 and 4 →2 transitions in Zn, and low-lying states in Zn were observed for the first time. The reduced E(2 ) energies and increased E(4 )/E(2 ) ratios at N=52, 54 compared to those in Zn attest that the magicity is confined to the neutron number N=50 only. The deduced level schemes are compared to three state-of-the-art shell model calculations and a good agreement is observed with all three calculations. The newly observed 2 and 4 levels in Zn suggest the onset of deformation towards heavier Zn isotopes, which has been incorporated by taking into account the upper sdg orbitals in the Ni78-II and the PFSDG-U models., All UK authors are supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Abstract: Isomeric states in 128In and 130In have been studied with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the IGISOL facility. By employing state-of-the-art ion manipulation techniques, three different beta-decaying states in 128In and 130In have been separated and their masses measured. JYFLTRAP was also used to select the ions of interest for identification at a post-trap decay spectroscopy station. A new beta-decaying high-spin isomer feeding the isomer in 128Sn has been discovered in 128In at 1797.6(20) keV. Shell-model calculations employing a CD-Bonn potential re-normalized with the perturbative G-matrix approach suggest this new isomer to be a 16⁺ spin-trap isomer. In 130In, the lowest-lying (10⁻) isomeric state at 58.6(82) keV was resolved for the first time using the phase-imaging ion cyclotron resonance technique. The energy difference between the 10⁻ and 1⁻ states in 130In, stemming from parallel/antiparallel coupling of (π0g-19/2) ⊗ (v0h-111/2), has been found to be around 200 keV lower than predicted by the shell model. Precise information on the energies of the excited states determined in this work is crucial for producing new improved effective interactions for the nuclear shell model description of nuclei near 132Sn.

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of the half-lives of K-pi = 11(-) and 12(+) four-quasiparticle states in the even-even nucleus W-178. The sub-nanosecond half-lives were measured by applying the centroid shift method to data taken with LaBr3(Ce) scintillator detectors of the NuBall array at the ALTO facility in Orsay, France. The half-lives of these states only became experimentally accessible by the combination of several experimental techniques - scintillator fast timing, isomer spectroscopy with a pulsed beam, and the event-by-event calorimetry information provided by the NuBall array. The measured half-lives are 476(44)ps and 275(65)ps for the I-pi = 11(-) and 12(+) states, respectively. The decay transitions include weakly hindered E1 and E2 branches directly to the ground-state band, bypassing the two-quasiparticle states. This is the first such observation for an E1 transition. The interpretation of the small hindrance hinges on mixing between the ground-state band and the t-band. (C) 2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The 12C + 12C fusion reaction plays a critical role in the evolution of massive stars and also strongly impacts various explosive astrophysical scenarios. The presence of resonances in this reaction at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier makes it impossible to carry out a simple extrapolation down to the Gamow window—the energy regime relevant to carbon burning in massive stars. The 12C + 12C system forms a unique laboratory for challenging the contemporary picture of deep sub-barrier fusion (possible sub-barrier hindrance) and its interplay with nuclear structure (sub-barrier resonances). Here, we show that direct measurements of the 12C + 12C fusion cross section may be made into the Gamow window using an advanced particle-gamma coincidence technique. The sensitivity of this technique effectively removes ambiguities in existing measurements made with gamma ray or charged-particle detection alone. The present cross-section data span over 8 orders of magnitude and support the fusion-hindrance model at deep sub-barrier energies.

Abstract: International audience; Excited states in the neutron-rich 85Se nucleus have been studied using for the first time a fast neutron-induced fission of 232Th. The experiment was performed at the ALTO facility of the IPN Orsay. Coupling of the LICORNE directional neutron source with the ν-ball high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer provided unique access to high-spin states in neutron-rich fission fragments from the 232Th(n, f) reaction. A preliminary level scheme of 85Se was established by the analysis of prompt γ–γ–γ coincidences. Identification of the all known yrast states in 85Se is the first step towards studies of more neutron-rich Se isotopes.

Abstract: Neutron-rich nuclei were studied after fast neutron-induced fission of 238U and 232Th at the ALTO facility in Orsay, France. The neutrons were produced with the LICORNE directional neutron source using a pulsed 7Li beam provided by the Tandem accelerator. The actinide targets were surrounded by the ν-Ball array to measure the de-excitation of fission fragments. The ν-Ball array is a hybrid spectrometer which consists of HPGe detectors (equipped with BGO shielding) and LaBr3(Ce) scintillation detectors allowing for high-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy and lifetime measurements in the ns/sub-ns range. This contribution presents preliminary results on 134Te and 137I populated in the 238U(n,f) reaction.

Abstract: Fifty-five inclusive single nucleon removal cross sections from medium mass neutron-rich nuclei impinging on a hydrogen target at � 250 MeV/nucleon were measured at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Systematically higher cross sections are found for proton removal from nuclei with an even number of protons compared to odd-proton number projectiles for a given neutron separation energy. Neutron removal cross sections display no even-odd splitting contrary to nuclear cascade model predictions. Both effects are understood through simple considerations of neutron separation energies and bound state level densities originating in pairing correlations in the daughter nuclei. These conclusions are supported by comparison with semi-microscopic model predictions,highlighting the enhanced role of low-lying level densities in nucleon removal cross sections from loosely-bound nuclei.

Abstract: Mean lifetimes of yrast states of the isotopes 174,176,178,180Hf have been measured using fast- electronic scintillation timing. Excited states of 74,176,178Hf were populated via β decay, while 180Hf was populated via Coulomb excitation. The lifetimes of the 2+ 1 and 4+ 1 states of all isotopes and the lifetimes of the 6+ 1 states of 174,178Hf were measured, using the slope and the centroid shift methods. The mean lifetime, τ (4+ 1 ) = 85(13) ps, of 178Hf has been determined for the first time. In addition, the mean lifetimes of the 2− 1 and the 3− 1 states of 176Hf have been determined. Systematic uncertainties on the evolution of data as a function of neutron number were reduced by using the same setup for all the isotopes of interest. The data are in agreement with other recent lifetime measurements where available and shows a shift of the maximum of collectivity for the Hf isotopic chain from neutron midshell at N = 104 to N = 100.

Abstract: The electronic γ–γ fast-timing technique using arrays consisting of many LaBr3(Ce) detectors is a powerful method to determine lifetimes of nuclear excited states with a lower limit of about 5 ps. This method requires the determination of the energy-dependent time walk of the zero time which is represented by the centroid of a prompt γ–γ time distribution. The full-energy peak versus full-energy peak prompt response difference which represents the linearly combined mean γ–γ time walk of a fast-timing array consisting of 8 LaBr3(Ce) detectors was measured using a standard 152Eu γ-ray source for the energy region of 40–1408 keV. The data were acquired using a “multiplexed-start and multiplexed-stop” analogue electronics circuitry and analysed by employing the generalized centroid difference method. Concerning the cylindrical 1.5 in.×1.5 in. LaBr3(Ce) crystals which are coupled to the Hamamatsu R9779 photomultiplier tubes, the best fast-timing array time resolution of 202(3) ps is obtained for the two prompt γ lines of 60Co by using the leading-edge timing principle. When using the zero-crossover timing principle the time resolution is degraded by up to 30%, dependent on the energy and the shaping delay time of the constant fraction discriminator model Ortec 935. The smallest γ–γ time walk to below 50 ps is obtained by using a shaping delay time of about 17 ns and an optimum “time-walk adjustment” needed for detector output pulses with amplitudes smaller than 400 mV.

Abstract: The reaction of a pulsed 18O beam on a self-supporting and gold-backed isotopically-enriched 164Dy target of thickness 6.3 mg/cm2 at separate primary beam energies of 71, 76 and 80 MeV was studied at the accelerator at the ALTO facility of the IPN Orsay. The γ rays produced were detected using the newly-constructed ν-Ball spectrometer which comprised of HPGe and LaBr3(Ce) detectors. This conference paper describes the methodology and effectiveness of multiplicity/sum-energy gating, for channel selection between fusion evaporation events and lower multiplicity/energy events from inelastic nuclear scattering and Coulomb excitation of the target, and from two-neutron transfer reactions to 166Dy.

Abstract: The ʋ-ball is a high-efficiency hybrid spectrometer which consists of both germanium (Ge) detectors and associated anti-Compton BGO shields, coupled to lanthanum bromide (LaBr3) detectors. The hybrid configuration provides a combination of both excellent energy and timing resolutions. The ʋ-ball geometry allows the coupling with the LICORNE directional neutron source at the ALTO facility of the IPN, Orsay. This opens the possibility to perform precise spectroscopy of neutron induced reactions and was used for two experiments during the recent experimental campaign. These two experiments are described here: 1. Spectroscopy of the neutron-rich fission fragments produced in the 238U(n; f) and 232Th(n; f) reactions; 2. Spectroscopy above the shape isomer in 238U. The 238U(n; f) and 232Th(n; f) reactions produce hundreds of neutron-rich nuclei on which gamma-ray spectroscopy can be performed. The main goal of the experiment aiming to populate the shape isomer in 238U is the measurement of the gamma-ray and fission decay branches as well as determination of level scheme in the super-deformed minimum. The shape isomer is populated by 238U(n; n') reaction, which gives a very advantageous population cross section over other reactions. More detailed descriptions of these two ʋ-ball experiments will be presented here.

Abstract: The reaction of a pulsed 18O beam on a 164Dy target was studied in the first experiment with the NuBall array at the IPN Orsay, France. Excited state half-lives were measured using the fast timing method with 20 LaBr3(Ce) detectors. The timing characteristics of the fully digital acquisition system is briefly discussed. A value for the previously unknown half-life of the first excited 4+ state in 178W is presented.

Abstract: The ν -ballspectrometer is an hybrid array combining high purity co-axial germanium detectors from the french-UK loan pool, clover detectors from the GAMMAPOOL, lanthanum bromide (LaBr3:Ce) scintillator detectors belonging to the FATIMA collaboration and phoswitches from the PARIS collaboration. The aim was to couple the excellent energy resolution of germanium detectors to the excellent time resolution of the LaBr3 detectors. We achieved a total photopeak efficiency of 6.7% at 1.3 MeV, and peak-to-total ratio of 50% for the germanium part of the array. Using the digital acquisition system FASTER, we achieved time resolution of about 250 ps for LaBr3. This acquisition system made also possible the use of the calorimetry for reaction selection. It makes ν -ball the first fully digital large fast timing spectrometer with time resolution similar to analogue electronics. The construction began in June 2017 and commissioning was performed in early November 2017. From November 2017 to June 2018, more than 3200 h of beam time were provided by the ALTO facility to perform eight experiments during the campaign. Among them, five weeks of beam time were dedicated to γ spectroscopy of fast neutron induced reactions. In this paper all the technical details about the spectrometer are presented. First steps of the data analysis process are also discussed.

Abstract: International audience; In 2017–2018, the ALTO facility hosted an experimental campaign using a γ spectrometer called ν-ball. Despite the short duration of the campaign, 3 200 hours of beam time distributed over eight experimental project have been provided. In this paper, a description of the progress of the campaign as a short description of the ν-ball array will be given.

Abstract: The STELLA (STELlar LAboratory) experimental station for the measurement of deep sub-barrier light heavy-ion fusion cross sections has been installed at the Androm\`{e}de accelerator at the Institut de Physique Nucl\'{e}aire, Orsay (France). The setup is designed for the direct experimental determination of heavy-ion fusion cross sections as low as tens of picobarn. The detection concept is based on the coincident measurement of emitted gamma rays with the UK FATIMA (FAst TIMing Array) and evaporated charged particles using a silicon detector array. Key developments relevant to reaching the extreme sub-barrier fusion region are a rotating target mechanism to sustain beam intensities above 10$\mu$A, an ultra-high vacuum to prevent carbon built-up and gamma charged-particle timing in the order of nanoseconds sufficient to separate proton and alpha particles., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: The existence of two close-lying nuclear states in ⁷³Ga has recently been experimentally determined: a 1/2⁻ spin-parity for the ground state was measured in a laser spectroscopy experiment, while a J_π = 3/2⁻ level was observed in transfer reactions. This scenario is supported by Coulomb excitation studies, which set a limit for the energy splitting of 0.8 keV. In this work, we report on the study of the excited structure of ⁷³Ga populated in the β decay of ⁷³Zn produced at ISOLDE, CERN. Using β-gated, γ-ray singles, and γ –γ coincidences, we have searched for energy differences to try to delimit the ground-state energy splitting, providing a more stringent energy difference limit. Three new half-lives of excited states in ⁷³Ga have been measured using the fast-timing ;method with LaBr₃(Ce) detectors. From our study, we help clarify the excited structure of ⁷³G and we extend the existing ⁷³Zn decay to ⁷³Ga with 8 new energy levels and 35 γ transitions. We observe a 195-keV transition consistent with a γ ray de-exciting a short-lived state in the β-decay parent ⁷³Zn.

Abstract: International audience; The lifetimes of the first 2+ excited states of 212,210Po were measured in two transfer reactions 208Pb(12C,8Be)212Po and 208Pb(12C,10Be)210Po by the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method and by the Doppler Shift Attenuation method (DSAM), respectively. The derived absolute B(E2) values of 2.6(3) W.u. for 212Po and 1.83(28) W.u. for 210Po indicate low collectivity. It is shown that the properties of the yrast , , and states in both nuclei cannot be described consistently in the framework of nuclear shell models. It is also demonstrated in the case of 210Po that Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

Abstract: 7 pags., 4 figs. -- XXII International School on Nuclear Physics, Neutron Physics and Applications. -- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 3.0, Low-spin states of neutron-rich Ge-84,Ge-86,Ge-88 were measured by in-flight gamma-ray spectroscopy at 270 MeV/u at the RIKEN-RIBF facility. The exotic beams have been produced by primary U-238 in-flight fission reactions and impinged on the MINOS device. MINOS combines a 10-cm long LH2 target with a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to reconstruct the reaction vertices. The reactions were selected by the BigRIPS and the ZeroDegree spectrometers for the incoming and outgoing channels, respectively. Emitted gamma radiation was detected by the NaI-array DALI2. De-excitations from the 6(1)(+), 4(1,2)(+), and 2(1,2)(+) states of Ge-84,Ge- 86 and 4(1)(+) and 26 states of Ge-88 were observed. The data are compared to state-of-the-art shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Furthermore, a candidate for a 3(1)(+) state of Ge-86 was identified. Abstract: The lifetimes of the $ 2^+_1$ , the $ 2^+_2$ and the $ 3^-_1$ states of$^{210}$Po have been measured in the$^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{10}$Be)$^{210}$Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The result for the lifetime of the $ 2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for a consistent description of the properties of the yrast $ 2^+_1$ , $ 4^+_1$ , $ 6^+_1$ , and $ 8^+_1$ states of$^{210}$Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

A new region of triaxially deformed nuclei is proposed in the Ge isotopic chain.

Abstract: We report on the first γ-ray spectroscopy of low-lying states in neutron-rich 98,100Kr isotopes obtained from 99,101Rb(p,2p) reactions at ∼ 220 MeV/nucleon. A reduction of the 2+ 1 state energies beyond N = 60 demonstrates a significant increase of deformation, shifted in neutron number compared to the sharper transition observed in strontium and zirconium isotopes. State-of-theart beyond-mean-field calculations using the Gogny D1S interaction predict level energies in good agreement with experimental results. The identification of a low-lying (0+ 2 , 2+ 2 ) state in 98Kr provides the first experimental evidence of a competing configuration at low energy in neutron-rich krypton isotopes consistent with the oblate-prolate shape coexistence picture suggested by theory

Abstract: The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This setup exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy γ rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on simulations, expected performances of the AGATA l π array are presented. Abstract: The properties of excited states in the neutron-rich nucleus 194Os have been investigated using the 192Os(18O,16O)194Os reaction with an 80 MeV beam provided by the IFIN-HH Laboratory, Bucharest. Discrete γ -ray decays from excited states have been measured using the hybrid HPGe-LaBr3(Ce) array RoSPHERE. The current work identifies a number of previously unreported low-lying nonyrast states in 194Os as well as the first measurement of the half-life of the yrast 2+ state of 302(50) ps. This is equivalent to a B(E2 : 2+ → 0+) = 45(16) W.u. and intrinsic quadrupole deformation of βeff = 0.14(1). The experimental results are compared with Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov–interacting-boson-model calculations and are consistent with a reduction in a quadrupole collectivity in Os isotopes with increasing neutron number.

Abstract: The first measurement of the low-lying states of the neutron-rich 110 Zr and 112 Mo was performed via in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy after one proton removal on hydrogen at ∼ 200 MeV / nucleon . The 2 + 1 excitation energies were found at 185(11) keV in 110 Zr , and 235(7) keV in 112 Mo , while the R 42 = E ( 4 + 1 ) / E ( 2 + 1 ) ratios are 3.1(2), close to the rigid rotor value, and 2.7(1), respectively. These results are compared to modern energy density functional based configuration mixing models using Gogny and Skyrme effective interactions. We conclude that first levels of 110 Zr exhibit a rotational behavior, in agreement with previous observations of lighter zirconium isotopes as well as with the most advanced Monte Carlo shell model predictions. The data, therefore, do not support a harmonic oscillator shell stabilization scenario at Z = 40 and N = 70 . The present data also invalidate predictions for a tetrahedral ground state symmetry in 110 Zr .

Abstract: A fast-timing experiment was performed at the Argonne National Laboratory in December 2015 and January 2016, measuring decay radiation of fission products from a Cf-252 fission source. Details of the set-up, integration with Digital Gammasphere, and the data acquisition system are presented. The timing performance of the set-up, capable of measuring lifetimes from the nanosecond region down to tens of picoseconds, is discussed. First preliminary results from the fast-timing analysis of the fission fragment data are presented.

Abstract: The B(E2) excitation strength of the first excited 2(+) state in even-even nuclei should directly correlate with the size of the valence space and maximize at mid-shell. A previously found saturation of B(E2) strengths in well-deformed rotors at mid-shell is tested through high-precision measurements of the lifetimes of the lowest-lying 2(+) states of the Hf-168 and W-174 rare earth isotopes. Measurements were performed using fast LaBr3 scintillation detectors. Combined with the recently remeasured B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) values for Hf and W isotopes the new data remove discrepancies observed in the differentials of B(E2) values for these isotopes.

Abstract: International audience; To investigate the systematics of mixed-symmetry states in N=52 isotones, a relativistic Coulomb excitation experiment was performed during the PreSPEC campaign at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung to determine E2 transition strengths to 2+ states of the radioactive nucleus $^{88}$Kr. Absolute transition rates could be measured towards the first and third 2+ states. For the latter a mixed-symmetry character is suggested on the basis of the indication for a strong M1 transition to the fully symmetric 21+ state, extending the knowledge of the N=52 isotones below Z=40. A comparison with the proton-neutron interacting boson model and shell-model predictions is made and supports the assignment.

For background suppression the γ-particle coincidence technique is used. In this project, LaBr3 detectors from the UK FATIMA (FAst TIMing Array) collaboration are combined with annular silicon strip detectors customized at IPHC-CNRS, Strasbourg, and the setup is located at Andromède, IPN, Orsay. The commissioning of the experimental approach as well as a sub-barrier 12C +12C → 24Mg∗ cross section measurement campaign are carried out.

Abstract: We report on the study of excited states in 92,94,96Kr populated via projectile Coulomb excitation at safe energies. The radioactive ion beams at energies of 2.85 MeV/u were delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN and impinged on self-supporting 194,196Pt targets. The emitted γ -rays were detected by the Miniball detector-array. A detailed description of the experimental techniques used for extracting diagonal and transitional matrix elements and of the theoretical framework is given. The present experiment reveals the moderate evolution of the collective structure in the considered neutron-rich Kr isotopic chain, which is supported by the interacting boson model combined with the self-consistent mean-field method using a microscopic Gogny energy-density functional.
