Scalable quantum computing can become a reality with error correction, provided coherent qubits can be constructed in large arrays. The key premise is that physical errors can remain both small and sufficiently uncorrelated as devices scale, so that logical error rates can be exponentially suppressed. However, energetic impacts from cosmic rays and latent radioactivity violate both of these assumptions. An impinging particle ionizes the substrate, radiating high energy phonons that induce a burst of quasiparticles, destroying qubit coherence throughout the device. High-energy radiation has been identified as a source of error in pilot superconducting quantum devices, but lacking a measurement technique able to resolve a single event in detail, the effect on large scale algorithms and error correction in particular remains an open question. Elucidating the physics involved requires operating large numbers of qubits at the same rapid timescales as in error correction, exposing the event's evolution in time and spread in space. Here, we directly observe high-energy rays impacting a large-scale quantum processor. We introduce a rapid space and time-multiplexed measurement method and identify large bursts of quasiparticles that simultaneously and severely limit the energy coherence of all qubits, causing chip-wide failure. We track the events from their initial localised impact to high error rates across the chip. Our results provide direct insights into the scale and dynamics of these damaging error bursts in large-scale devices, and highlight the necessity of mitigation to enable quantum computing to scale.

Realizing the potential of quantum computing requires sufficiently low logical error rates1. Many applications call for error rates as low as 10−15 (refs. 2–9), but state-of-the-art quantum platforms typically have physical error rates near 10−3 (refs. 10–14). Quantum error correction15–17 promises to bridge this divide by distributing quantum logical information across many physical qubits in such a way that errors can be detected and corrected. Errors on the encoded logical qubit state can be exponentially suppressed as the number of physical qubits grows, provided that the physical error rates are below a certain threshold and stable over the course of a computation. Here we implement one-dimensional repetition codes embedded in a two-dimensional grid of superconducting qubits that demonstrate exponential suppression of bit-flip or phase-flip errors, reducing logical error per round more than 100-fold when increasing the number of qubits from 5 to 21. Crucially, this error suppression is stable over 50 rounds of error correction. We also introduce a method for analysing error correlations with high precision, allowing us to characterize error locality while performing quantum error correction. Finally, we perform error detection with a small logical qubit using the 2D surface code on the same device18,19 and show that the results from both one- and two-dimensional codes agree with numerical simulations that use a simple depolarizing error model. These experimental demonstrations provide a foundation for building a scalable fault-tolerant quantum computer with superconducting qubits., Repetition codes running many cycles of quantum error correction achieve exponential suppression of errors with increasing numbers of qubits.

The discovery of topological order has revolutionized the understanding of quantum matter in modern physics and provided the theoretical foundation for many quantum error correcting codes. Realizing topologically ordered states has proven to be extremely challenging in both condensed matter and synthetic quantum systems. Here, we prepare the ground state of the toric code Hamiltonian using an efficient quantum circuit on a superconducting quantum processor. We measure a topological entanglement entropy near the expected value of $\ln2$, and simulate anyon interferometry to extract the braiding statistics of the emergent excitations. Furthermore, we investigate key aspects of the surface code, including logical state injection and the decay of the non-local order parameter. A promising approach to study condensed-matter systems is to simulate them on an engineered quantum platform1–4. However, the accuracy needed to outperform classical methods has not been achieved so far. Here, using 18 superconducting qubits, we provide an experimental blueprint for an accurate condensed-matter simulator and demonstrate how to investigate fundamental electronic properties. We benchmark the underlying method by reconstructing the single-particle band structure of a one-dimensional wire. We demonstrate nearly complete mitigation of decoherence and readout errors, and measure the energy eigenvalues of this wire with an error of approximately 0.01 rad, whereas typical energy scales are of the order of 1 rad. Insight into the fidelity of this algorithm is gained by highlighting the robust properties of a Fourier transform, including the ability to resolve eigenenergies with a statistical uncertainty of 10−4 rad. We also synthesize magnetic flux and disordered local potentials, which are two key tenets of a condensed-matter system. When sweeping the magnetic flux we observe avoided level crossings in the spectrum, providing a detailed fingerprint of the spatial distribution of local disorder. By combining these methods we reconstruct electronic properties of the eigenstates, observing persistent currents and a strong suppression of conductance with added disorder. Our work describes an accurate method for quantum simulation5,6 and paves the way to study new quantum materials with superconducting qubits. As a blueprint for high-precision quantum simulation, an 18-qubit algorithm that consists of more than 1,400 two-qubit gates is demonstrated, and reconstructs the energy eigenvalues of the simulated one-dimensional wire to a precision of 1 per cent.

Disorder has different profound effects on superconducting thin films. For a large variety of materials, increasing disorder reduces electronic screening which enhances electron-electron repulsion. These fermionic effects lead to a mechanism described by Finkelstein: when disorder combined to electron-electron interactions increases, there is a global decrease of the superconducting energy gap $\Delta$ and of the critical temperature $T_c$, the ratio $\Delta$/$k_BT_c$ remaining roughly constant. In addition, in most films an emergent granularity develops with increasing disorder and results in the formation of inhomogeneous superconducting puddles. These gap inhomogeneities are usually accompanied by the development of bosonic features: a pseudogap develops above the critical temperature $T_c$ and the energy gap $\Delta$ starts decoupling from $T_c$. Thus the mechanism(s) driving the appearance of these gap inhomogeneities could result from a complicated interplay between fermionic and bosonic effects. By studying the local electronic properties of a NbN film with scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) we show that the inhomogeneous spatial distribution of $\Delta$ is locally strongly correlated to a large depletion in the local density of states (LDOS) around the Fermi level, associated to the Altshuler-Aronov effect induced by strong electronic interactions. By modelling quantitatively the measured LDOS suppression, we show that the latter can be interpreted as local variations of the film resistivity. This local change in resistivity leads to a local variation of $\Delta$ through a local Finkelstein mechanism. Our analysis furnishes a purely fermionic scenario explaining quantitatively the emergent superconducting inhomogeneities, while the precise origin of the latter remained unclear up to now., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

A major issue for the implementation of large scale superconducting quantum circuits is the interaction with interfacial two-level system defects (TLS) that leads to qubit relaxation and impedes qubit operation in certain frequency ranges that also drift in time. Another major challenge comes from non-equilibrium quasiparticles (QPs) that result in qubit dephasing and relaxation. In this work we show that such QPs can also serve as a source of TLS. Using spectral and temporal mapping of TLS-induced fluctuations in frequency tunable resonators, we identify a subset of the general TLS population that are highly coherent TLS with a low reconfiguration temperature $\sim$ 300 mK, and a non-uniform density of states. These properties can be understood if these TLS are formed by QPs trapped in shallow subgap states formed by spatial fluctutations of the superconducting order parameter $\Delta$. Magnetic field measurements of one such TLS reveals a link to superconductivity. We propose a novel platform for the study of quantum phase transitions in one dimension (1D QPT). The system consists of a specially designed chain of asymmetric SQUIDs; each SQUID contains several Josephson junctions with one junction shared between the nearest-neighbor SQUIDs.We develop the theoretical description of the low energy part of the spectrum. In particular, we show that the system exhibits the quantum phase transition of Ising type. In the vicinity of the transition the low energy excitations of the system can be described by Majorana fermions. This allow us to compute the matrix elements of the physical perturbations in the low energy sector. In the microwave experiments with this system, we explored the phase boundaries between the ordered and disordered phases and the critical behavior of the system's low-energy modes close to the transition. Due to the flexible chain design and control of the parameters of individual Josephson junctions, future experiments will be able to address the effects of non-integrability and disorder on the 1D QPT., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Strongly disordered pseudogapped superconductors are expected to display arbitrarily high values of kinetic inductance close to the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT), which make them attractive for the implementation of large dissipationless inductance. We develop the theory of the collective modes in these superconductors and discuss associated dissipation at microwave frequencies. We obtain the collective mode spectra dependence on the disorder level and conclude that collective modes become a relevant source of dissipation and noise in the outer proximity of the SIT.

10 pags., 9 figs., 1 tab., We report the results of the numerical study of the nondissipative quantum Josephson junction chain with the focus on the statistics of many-body wave functions and local energy spectra. The disorder in this chain is due to the random offset charges. This chain is one of the simplest physical systems to study many-body localization. We show that the system may exhibit three distinct regimes: insulating, characterized by the full localization of many-body wave functions, a fully delocalized (metallic) one characterized by the wave functions that take all the available phase volume, and the intermediate regime in which the volume taken by the wave function scales as a nontrivial power of the full Hilbert-space volume. In the intermediate nonergodic regime the Thouless conductance (generalized to the many-body problem) does not change as a function of the chain length indicating a failure of the conventional single-parameter scaling theory of localization transition. The local spectra in this regime display the fractal structure in the energy space which is related with the fractal structure of wave functions in the Hilbert space. The concept of non-ergodicity in quantum many body systems can be discussed in the context of the wave functions of the many body system or as a property of the dynamical observables, such as time-dependent spin correlators. In the former approach the non-ergodic delocalized states is defined as the one in which the wave functions occupy a volume that scales as a non-trivial power of the full phase space. In this work we study the simplest spin glass model and find that in the delocalized non-ergodic regime the spin-spin correlators decay with the characteristic time that scales as non-trivial power of the full Hilbert space volume. The long time limit of this correlator also scales as a power of the full Hilbert space volume. We identify this phase with the glass phase whilst the many body localized phase corresponds to a 'hyperglass' in which dynamics is practically absent. We have observed the effect of the Aharonov-Casher (AC) interference on the spectrum of a superconducting system containing a symmetric Cooper pair box (CPB) and a large inductance. By varying the charge $n_{g}$ induced on the CPB island, we observed oscillations of the device spectrum with the period $\Delta n_{g}=2e$. These oscillations are attributed to the charge-controlled AC interference between the fluxon tunneling processes in the CPB Josephson junctions. Total suppression of the tunneling (complete destructive interference) has been observed for the charge $n_{g}=e(2n+1)$. The CPB in this regime represents the $4\pi$-periodic Josephson element, which can be used for the development of the parity-protected superconducting qubits., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

International audience; We extend the Keldysh technique to enable the computation of out-of-time order correlators such as 〈O(t)Õ(0)O(t)Õ(0)〉 . We show that the behavior of these correlators is described by equations that display initially an exponential instability which is followed by a linear propagation of the decoherence between two initially identically copies of the quantum many body systems with interactions. At large times the decoherence propagation (quantum butterfly effect) is described by a diffusion equation with non-linear dissipation known in the theory of combustion waves. The solution of this equation is a propagating non-linear wave moving with constant velocity despite the diffusive character of the underlying dynamics.Our general conclusions are illustrated by the detailed computations for the specific models describing the electrons interacting with bosonic degrees of freedom (phonons, two-level-systems etc.) or with each other.

We combine numerical diagonalization with a semi-analytical calculations to prove the existence of the intermediate non-ergodic but delocalized phase in the Anderson model on disordered hierarchical lattices. We suggest a new generalized population dynamics that is able to detect the violation of ergodicity of the delocalized states within the Abou-Chakra, Anderson and Thouless recursive scheme. This result is supplemented by statistics of random wave functions extracted from exact diagonalization of the Anderson model on ensemble of disordered Random Regular Graphs (RRG) of N sites with the connectivity K=2. By extrapolation of the results of both approaches to N->infinity we obtain the fractal dimensions D_{1}(W) and D_{2}(W) as well as the population dynamic exponent D(W) with the accuracy sufficient to claim that they are non-trivial in the broad interval of disorder strength W_{E}10^{5} reveals a singularity in D_{1,2}(W)-dependencies which provides a clear evidence for the first order transition between the two delocalized phases on RRG at W_{E}\approx 10.0. We develop a semi-quantitative theory of electron pairing and resulting superconductivity in bulk "poor conductors" in which Fermi energy $E_F$ is located in the region of localized states not so far from the Anderson mobility edge $E_c$. We review the existing theories and experimental data and argue that a large class of disordered films is described by this model. Our theoretical analysis is based on the analytical treatment of pairing correlations, described in the basis of the exact single-particle eigenstates of the 3D Anderson model, which we combine with numerical data on eigenfunction correlations. Fractal nature of critical wavefunction's correlations is shown to be crucial for the physics of these systems. We identify three distinct phases: 'critical' superconductive state formed at $E_F=E_c$, superconducting state with a strong pseudogap, realized due to pairing of weakly localized electrons and insulating state realized at $E_F$ still deeper inside localized band. The 'critical' superconducting phase is characterized by the enhancement of the transition temperature with respect to BCS result, by the inhomogeneous spatial distribution of superconductive order parameter and local density of states. The major new feature of the pseudo-gaped state is the presence of two independent energy scales: superconducting gap $\Delta$, that is due to many-body correlations and a new "pseudogap" energy scale $\Delta_P$ which characterizes typical binding energy of localized electron pairs and leads to the insulating behavior of the resistivity as a function of temperature above superconductive $T_c$. Strictly speaking, the laws of the conventional statistical physics, based on the equipartition postulate [Gibbs J W (1902) Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics, developed with especial reference to the rational foundation of thermodynamics] and ergodicity hypothesis [Boltzmann L (1964) Lectures on Gas Theory], apply only in the presence of a heat bath. Until recently this restriction was believed to be not important for real physical systems because a weak coupling to the bath was assumed to be sufficient. However, this belief was not examined seriously until recently when the progress in both quantum gases and solid-state coherent quantum devices allowed one to study the systems with dramatically reduced coupling to the bath. To describe such systems properly one should revisit the very foundations of statistical mechanics. We examine this general problem for the case of the Josephson junction chain that can be implemented in the laboratory and show that it displays a novel high-temperature nonergodic phase with finite resistance. With further increase of the temperature the system undergoes a transition to the fully localized state characterized by infinite resistance and exponentially long relaxation.

We demonstrate evidence of coherent magnetic flux tunneling through superconducting nanowires patterned in a thin highly disordered NbN film. The phenomenon is revealed as a superposition of flux states in a fully metallic superconducting loop with the nanowire acting as an effective tunnel barrier for the magnetic flux, and reproducibly observed in different wires. The flux superposition achieved in the fully metallic NbN rings proves the universality of the phenomenon previously reported for InOx. We perform microwave spectroscopy and study the tunneling amplitude as a function of the wire width, compare the experimental results with theories, and estimate the parameters for existing theoretical models., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. The origin of continuous energy spectra in large disordered interacting quantum systems is one of the key unsolved problems in quantum physics. Although small quantum systems with discrete energy levels are noiseless and stay coherent forever in the absence of any coupling to external world, most large-scale quantum systems are able to produce a thermal bath and excitation decay. This intrinsic decoherence is manifested by a broadening of energy levels, which aquire a finite width. The important question is: what is the driving force and the mechanism of transition(s) between these two types of many-body systems - with and without intrinsic decoherence? Here we address this question via the numerical study of energy-level statistics of a system of interacting spin-1/2 with random transverse fields. We present the first evidence for a well-defined quantum phase transition between domains of discrete and continous many-body spectra in such spin models, implying the appearance of novel insulating phases in the vicinity of the superconductor-insulator transition in InO(x) and similar materials.

We report on the realization of a superinductor, a dissipationless element whose microwave impedance greatly exceeds the resistance quantum. The design of the superinductor, implemented as a ladder of nanoscale Josephson junctions, enables tuning of the inductance and its nonlinearity by a weak magnetic field. The Rabi decay time of the superinductor-based qubit exceeds 1 microsecond. International audience; A neutral quantum particle with magnetic moment encircling a static electric charge acquires a quantum mechanical phase (Aharonov-Casher effect). In superconducting electronics the neutral particle becomes a fluxon that moves around superconducting islands connected by Josephson junctions. The full understanding of this effect in systems of many junctions is crucial for the design of novel quantum circuits. Here we present measurements and quantitative analysis of fluxon interference patterns in a six Josephson junction chain. In this multi-junction circuit the fluxon can encircle any combination of charges on five superconducting islands, resulting in a complex pattern. We compare the experimental results with predictions of a simplified model that treats fluxons as independent excitations and with the results of the full diagonalization of the quantum problem. Our results demonstrate the accuracy of the fluxon interference description and the quantum coherence of these arrays.

We develop a technique to compute the high-frequency asymptotics of spin correlators in weakly interacting disordered spin systems. We show that the dynamical spin correlator decreases exponentially at high frequencies, $< SS>_{\omega}\sim\exp(-\tau_{*}\omega)$ and compute the characteristic time $\tau^{*}$ of this dependence. In a typical random configuration, some fraction of spins form strongly coupled pairs, which behave as two-level systems. Their switching dynamics is driven by the high-frequency noise from the surrounding spins, resulting in low-frequency $1/f$ noise in the magnetic susceptibility and other physical quantities. We discuss application of these results to the problem of susceptibility and flux noise in superconducting circuits at mK temperatures.

The most profound effect of disorder on electronic systems is the localization of the electrons transforming an otherwise metallic system into an insulator. If the metal is also a superconductor then, at low temperatures, disorder can induce a dramatic transition from a superconducting into an insulating state. An outstanding question is whether the route to insulating behavior proceeds via the direct localization of Cooper pairs or, alternatively, by a two-step process in which the Cooper pairing is first destroyed followed by the standard localization of single electrons. Here we address this question by studying the local superconducting gap of a highly disordered, amorphous, superconductor by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Our measurements reveal that, in the vicinity of the superconductor-insulator transition, the coherence peaks in the one-particle density of states disappear while the superconducting gap remains intact indicating the presence of localized Cooper pairs. Our results provide the first direct evidence that the transition in our system is driven by Cooper pair localization., 8 pages, 5 figures

We have studied the microwave response of a single Cooper-pair transistor (CPT) coupled to a lumped-element microwave resonator. The resonance frequency of this circuit, $f_{r}$, was measured as a function of the charge $n_{g}$ induced on the CPT island by the gate electrode, and the phase difference across the CPT, $\phi_{B}$, which was controlled by the magnetic flux in the superconducting loop containing the CPT. The observed $f_{r}(n_{g},\phi_{B})$ dependences reflect the variations of the CPT Josephson inductance with $n_{g}$ and $\phi_{B}$ as well as the CPT excitation when the microwaves induce transitions between different quantum states of the CPT. The results are in excellent agreement with our simulations based on the numerical diagonalization of the circuit Hamiltonian. This agreement over the whole range of $n_{g}$ and $\phi_{B}$ is unexpected, because the relevant energies vary widely, from 0.1K to 3K. The observed strong dependence $f_{r}(n_{g},\phi_{B})$ near the resonance excitation of the CPT provides a tool for sensitive charge measurements., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the transport properties of a bilayer exciton condensate that is contacted by four superconducting leads. We focus on the equilibrium regime and investigate how the Josephson currents induced in the bilayer by phase biases applied to the superconducting electrodes are affected by the presence of an exciton condensate in the bulk of the system. As long as the distance between the superconducting electrodes is much larger than the exciton coherence length, the Josephson current depends only on the difference between the phase biases in the two layers. This result holds true in both short- and long-junction limits. We relate it to a novel correlated four-particle Andreev process which occurs at the superconductor - exciton condensate interface. We develop an analytical theory for generic disorder-driven quantum phase transitions. We apply this formalism to the superconductor-insulator transition and we briefly discuss the applications to the order-disorder transition in quantum magnets. The effective spin-1/2 models for these transitions are solved in the cavity approximation which becomes exact on a Bethe lattice with large branching number K >> 1 and weak dimensionless coupling g << 1. The characteristic features of the low temperature phase is a large self-formed inhomogeneity of the order-parameter distribution near the critical point K_{c}(g) where the critical temperature T_{c} of the ordering transition vanishes. Near the quantum critical point, the typical value of the order parameter vanishes exponentially, B_{0}\propto e^{-C/(K-K_{c}(g))}. In the disordered regime, realized at K\omega_{d} the level acquire a non-zero width which is self-generated by the many-body interactions. In this phase the spin model provides by itself an intrinsic thermal bath. Another phase is obtained at smaller K, Comment: 59 pages, 11 figures

We have studied damping in polycrystalline Al nanomechanical resonators by measuring the temperature dependence of their resonance frequency and quality factor over a temperature range of 0.1 - 4 K. Two regimes are clearly distinguished with a crossover temperature of 1 K. Below 1 K we observe a logarithmic temperature dependence of the frequency and linear dependence of damping that cannot be explained by the existing standard models. We attribute these phenomena to the effect of the two-level systems characterized by the unexpectedly long (at least two orders of magnitude longer) relaxation times and discuss possible microscopic models for such systems. We conclude that the dynamics of the two-level systems is dominated by their interaction with one-dimensional phonon modes of the resonators., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

4 pages, 1 figure; International audience; We develop an analytical theory, based on the quantum cavity method, describing the quantum phase transitions in low-temperature, strongly disordered ferromagnets and superconductors. At variance with the usual quantum critical points, we find a phase diagram with two critical points separating three phases. When the disorder increases, the systems goes from the ordered phase to an intermediate disordered phase characterized by activated transport and then to a second disordered phase where no transport is possible. Both the ordered and disordered phases exhibit strong inhomogeneity of their basic properties typical of glassy physics.

We introduce a toy model that allows us to study the physical properties of a spin impurity coupled to the electrons in the superconducting island. We show that when the coupling of the spin is of the order of the superconducting gap two almost degenerate subgap states are formed. By computing the Berry phase that is associated with the superconducting phase rotations in this model, we prove that these subgap states are characterized by a different charge and demonstrate that the switching between these states has the same effect as quasiparticle poisoning (unpoisoning) of the island. We analyze the data and discuss their implications for the microscopic origin of the low frequency flux noise in superconducting circuits. We argue that this noise is produced by spins at the superconductor insulator boundary whose dynamics is due to RKKY interaction. We show that this mechanism explains size independence of the noise, different frequency dependences of the spectra reported in large and small SQUIDs and gives the correct intensity for realistic parameters., Comment: 4 pages, no figures

For successful realization of a quantum computer, its building blocks (qubits) should be simultaneously scalable and sufficiently protected from environmental noise. Recently, a novel approach to the protection of superconducting qubits has been proposed. The idea is to prevent errors at the "hardware" level, by building a fault-free (topologically protected) logical qubit from "faulty" physical qubits with properly engineered interactions between them. It has been predicted that the decoupling of a protected logical qubit from local noises would grow exponentially with the number of physical qubits. Here we report on the proof-of-concept experiments with a prototype device which consists of twelve physical qubits made of nanoscale Josephson junctions. We observed that due to properly tuned quantum fluctuations, this qubit is protected against magnetic flux variations well beyond linear order, in agreement with theoretical predictions. We compute the current-voltage characteristic of a chain of identical Josephson circuits characterized by a large ratio of Josephson to charging energy that are envisioned as the implementation of topologically protected qubits. We show that in the limit of small coupling to the environment, it exhibits a nonmonotonous behavior with a maximum voltage followed by a parametrically large region where $V\ensuremath{\propto}1∕I$. We argue that its experimental measurement provides a direct probe of the amplitude of the quantum transitions in constituting Josephson circuits and thus allows their full characterization.

We show that trapped ions can be used to simulate a highly symmetrical Hamiltonian with eingenstates naturally protected against local sources of decoherence. This Hamiltonian involves long range coupling between particles and provides a more efficient protection than nearest neighbor models discussed in previous works. We analyze data on the critical current and normal state resistance noise in Josephson junctions and argue that the noise in the critical current is due to a mechanism that is absent in the normal state. We estimate the noise produced by conventional Two Level Systems (TLSs) in the insulating barrier and find that it agrees both in magnitude and in temperature dependence with the resistance fluctuations in the normal state but it is not sufficient to explain the critical current noise observed in large superconducting contacts. We propose a novel microscopic mechanism for the noise in the superconducting state in which the noise is due to electron tunneling between weak Kondo states at subgap energies. We argue that the noise produced by this mechanism gives temperature, area dependence and intensity that agree with the data., 4 pages, 1 figure

We develop a theory of a pseudogap state appearing near the superconductor-insulator (SI) transition in strongly disordered metals with an attractive interaction. We show that such an interaction combined with the fractal nature of the single-particle wave functions near the mobility edge leads to an anomalously large single-particle gap in the superconducting state near SI transition that persists and even increases in the insulating state long after the superconductivity is destroyed. We give analytic expressions for the value of the pseudogap in terms of the inverse participation ratio of the corresponding localization problem.

The noise in physical qubits is fundamentally asymmetric: in most devices, phase errors are much more probable than bit flips. We propose a quantum error-correcting code that takes advantage of this asymmetry and shows good performance at a relatively small cost in redundancy, requiring less than a doubling of the number of physical qubits for error correction. This code is particularly adapted for building an efficient quantum memory.

We discuss the origin of decoherence in Josephson junction qubits. We find that two level systems in the surrounding insulator cannot be the dominant source of noise in small qubits. We argue that electron traps in the Josephson barrier with large Coulomb repulsion would give noise that agrees both in magnitude and in temperature dependence with experimental data., Comment: 4 pages, no figures

We present general symmetry arguments that show the appearance of doubly denerate states protected from external perturbations in a wide class of Hamiltonians. We construct the simplest spin Hamiltonian belonging to this class and study its properties both analytically and numerically. We find that this model generally has a number of low energy modes which might destroy the protection in the thermodynamic limit. These modes are qualitatively different from the usual gapless excitations as their number scales as the linear size (instead of volume) of the system. We show that the Hamiltonians with this symmetry can be physically implemented in Josephson junction arrays and that in these arrays one can eliminate the low energy modes with a proper boundary condition. We argue that these arrays provide fault tolerant quantum bits. Further we show that the simplest spin model with this symmetry can be mapped to a very special Z_2 Chern-Simons model on the square lattice. We argue that appearance of the low energy modes and the protected degeneracy is a natural property of lattice Chern-Simons theories. Finally, we discuss a general formalism for the construction of discrete Chern-Simons theories on a lattice., 20 pages, 7 figures

We construct the Hamiltonian description of the Chern-Simons theory with Z_n gauge group on a triangular lattice. We show that the Z_2 model can be mapped onto free Majorana fermions and compute the excitation spectrum. In the bulk the spectrum turns out to be gapless but acquires a gap if a magnetic term is added to the Hamiltonian. On a lattice edge one gets additional non-gauge invariant (matter) gapless degrees of freedom whose number grows linearly with the edge length. Therefore, a small hole in the lattice plays the role of a charged particle characterized by a non-trivial projective representation of the gauge group, while a long edge provides a decoherence mechanism for the fluxes. We present a theory of the subgap tails of the density of states in a diffusive superconductor containing magnetic impurities. We show that the subgap tails have two contributions: one arising from mesoscopic gap fluctuations, previously discussed by Lamacraft and Simons, and the other associated to the long-wave fluctuations of the concentration of magnetic impurities. We study the latter both in small superconducting grains and in bulk systems [$d=1,2,3$], and establish the dimensionless parameter that controls which of the two contributions dominates the subgap tails. We observe that these contributions are related to each other by dimensional reduction. We apply the theory to estimate the effects of a weak concentration of magnetic impurities [$\approx 1 {\rm p.p.m}$] on the phase coherence of Josephson qubits. We find that at these typical concentrations, magnetic impurities are relevant for the dephasing in large qubits, designed around a $10 {\rm ��m}$ scale, where they limit the quality factor to be $Q, 13 pages, 1 figure

We propose a new design for a quantum bit with four superconducting islands in the topology of a symmetric tetrahedron, uniformly frustrated with one-half flux-quantum per loop and one-half Cooper-pair per island. This structure emulates a noise-resistant spin-1/2 system in a vanishing magnetic field. The tetrahedral quantum bit combines a number of advances such as a doubly degeneracy ground state minimizing decoherence via phonon radiation, a weak quadratic sensitivity to electric and magnetic noise, relieved constraints on the junction fabrication, a large freedom in manipulation, and attractive measurement schemes. The simultaneous appearance of a degenerate ground state and a weak noise sensitivity are consequences of the tetrahedral symmetry, while enhanced quantum fluctuations derive from the special magnetic frustration. We determine the spectral properties of the tetrahedral structure within a semiclassical analysis and confirm the results numerically. We show how proper tuning of the charge-frustration selects a doubly degenerate ground state and discuss the qubit's manipulation through capacitive and inductive coupling to external bias sources. The complete readout of all the spin-components is achieved through coupling of the internal qubit currents to external junctions driven close to criticality during the measurement., 16 pages, 7 figures

We discuss real-space lattice models equivalent to gauge theories with a discrete non-Abelian gauge group. We construct the Hamiltonian formalism which is appropriate for their solid-state physics implementation and outline their basic properties. The unusual physics of these systems is due to local constraints on the degrees of freedom which are variables localized on the links of the lattice. We discuss two types of constraints that become equivalent after a duality transformation for Abelian theories but are qualitatively different for non-Abelian ones. We emphasize highly nontrivial topological properties of the excitations (fluxons and charges) in these non-Abelian discrete lattice gauge theories. We show that an implementation of these models may provide one with the realization of an ideal quantum computer, that is, the computer that is protected from the noise and allows a full set of precise manipulations required for quantum computations. We suggest a few designs of the Josephson-junction arrays that provide the experimental implementations of these models and discuss the physical restrictions on the parameters of their junctions.

We establish the connection between the presence of a glass phase and the appearance of a Coulomb gap in disordered materials with strongly interacting electrons. Treating multiparticle correlations in a systematic way, we show that in the case of strong disorder a continuous glass transition takes place whose Landau expansion is identical to that of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass. We show that the marginal stability of the glass phase controls the physics of these systems: it results in slow dynamics and leads to the formation of a Coulomb gap.

We propose a Josephson junction array which can be tuned into an unconventional insulating state by varying external magnetic field. This insulating state retains a gap to half vortices; as a consequence, such array with non-trivial global geometry exhibits a ground state degeneracy. This degeneracy is protected from the effects of external noise. We present fermi liquid expressions for the low temperature behavior of the superfluid stiffness, explain why they differ from those suggested recently by Lee and Wen, and discuss their applicability to data on high-$T_c$ superconductors. We find that a consistent description requires a strong, doping dependent anisotropy, which affects states near the zone corners much more strongly than those near the zone diagonals.

We construct the local Hamiltonian description of the Chern-Simons theory with discrete non-Abelian gauge group on a lattice. We show that the theory is fully determined by the phase factors associated with gauge transformations and classify all possible non-equivalent phase factors. We also construct the gauge invariant electric field operators that move fluxons around and create/anihilate them. We compute the resulting braiding properties of the fluxons. We apply our general results to the simplest class of non-Abelian groups, dihedral groups D_n., 16 pages, 7 figures

We demonstrate the application of the Google Sycamore superconducting qubit quantum processor to combinatorial optimization problems with the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA). Like past QAOA experiments, we study performance for problems defined on the (planar) connectivity graph of our hardware; however, we also apply the QAOA to the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model and MaxCut, both high dimensional graph problems for which the QAOA requires significant compilation. Experimental scans of the QAOA energy landscape show good agreement with theory across even the largest instances studied (23 qubits) and we are able to perform variational optimization successfully. For problems defined on our hardware graph we obtain an approximation ratio that is independent of problem size and observe, for the first time, that performance increases with circuit depth. For problems requiring compilation, performance decreases with problem size but still provides an advantage over random guessing for circuits involving several thousand gates. This behavior highlights the challenge of using near-term quantum computers to optimize problems on graphs differing from hardware connectivity. As these graphs are more representative of real world instances, our results advocate for more emphasis on such problems in the developing tradition of using the QAOA as a holistic, device-level benchmark of quantum processors., 19 pages, 15 figures
