Abstract

An extended investigation of the low-spin structure of the Ni65 nucleus was performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France, via the neutron capture reaction Ni64(n,γ)Ni65, using the Fission Product Prompt Gamma-Ray Spectrometer High-Purity Ge array. The level scheme of Ni65 was significantly expanded, with two new levels and 87 newly found transitions. Angular correlation analyses were also performed, allowing us to assign spins and parities for a number of states and to determine multipolarity mixing ratios for selected γ transitions. Abstract

Medium and high spin states of the Y96 nucleus, located in the shape-coexistence region near Z=40 and N=60, were populated in thermal-neutron-induced fission of U233 and U235 targets, diluted in a scintillator. γ rays were measured with the FIssion Product Prompt γ-ray Spectrometer (FIPPS) high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector array, using double and triple γ-ray coincidence techniques and taking advantage of the efficient fission tag provided by the scintillating target material. A complex level scheme, extending up to 5.2 MeV and including excitations above the 8+β-decaying isomer, was investigated, and firm spin and parity assignments were given to a number of states, on the basis of angular correlation analysis and considerations on the γ-decay patterns. While the structures built on the 0− ground state and the 8+ isomer show irregular patterns typical for spherical shapes, the (6+) isomeric state at 1655 keV [with half-life of 181(9) ns], and the rotational band built on it [with spin-parity values between (6+) and (9+)], can be explained by Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations, if an oblate deformation is assumed. This is the first observation of a deformed structure in an N=57 isotone, lying three neutrons away from the N=60 line. An important finding is also the 115-keV transition which connects the (6+) 181(9)-ns isomer to the β-decaying 8+ spherical isomer, allowing us to firmly place the latter at 1541 keV excitation energy. This may be relevant for calculations of electron and antineutrino spectra from fission of actinides, for which Y96 is a prominent product.

Abstract

International audience; We demonstrate the possibility to extract nuclear state femtosecond lifetimes from two-step $\gamma $ ray cascades measured with a Ge-detector array. The technique is based on measuring the Doppler shift of a $\gamma $ ray, caused by the recoil of a preceding $\gamma $ ray emission. Since the two $\gamma $ rays are populating/de-populating the same state they form a start/stop signal, the delay of which is compared to the slowing down motion of the nucleus within the target material. A multi-detector array combined with digital acquisition electronics in list mode, allows to measure several angular combinations and two-step cascades efficiently and simultaneously within one single experiment. The concept was demonstrated with the FIPPS array for the $^{35}\hbox {Cl(n,}\gamma \hbox {)}^{36}\hbox {Cl}$ reaction, where we obtained good agreement with literature values showing the validity of the method.

Abstract

The evolution of the deformation across the Y isotopic chain, in the vicinity of N = 60 boundary, has been studied using gamma spectroscopy methods. The nuclei of interest have been produced by neutron induced fission of 235U and 241Pu targets, during two experimental campaigns named EXILL and FIPPS at the Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. The emitted gamma rays have been collected by HPGe and LaBr3 detectors providing the identification of the high-spin levels in the 94Y and 96Y isotopes up to 6 MeV excitation energy, as well as information about the half-lives of the in-band states in the 98Y nucleus. The obtained results shed new light on the onset of deformation in the neutron-rich Y isotopes and, in general, in the A ≈ 100 region.

Abstract

The STEREO experiment measures the electron antineutrino spectrum emitted in a research reactor using the inverse beta decay reaction on H nuclei in a gadolinium loaded liquid scintillator. The detection is based on a signal coincidence of a prompt positron and a delayed neutron capture event. The simulated response of the neutron capture on gadolinium is crucial for the comparison with data, in particular in the case of the detection efficiency. Among all stable isotopes, $^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd have the highest cross sections for thermal neutron capture. The excited nuclei after the neutron capture emit gamma rays with a total energy of about 8 MeV. The complex level schemes of $^{156}$Gd and $^{158}$Gd are a challenge for the modeling and prediction of the deexcitation spectrum, especially for compact detectors where gamma rays can escape the active volume. With a new description of the Gd(n,${\gamma}$) cascades obtained using the FIFRELIN code, the agreement between simulation and measurements with a neutron calibration source was significantly improved in the STEREO experiment. Abstract

International audience; The Fission Product Prompt γ-ray Spectrometer (FIPPS) is a new instrument of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) for the spectroscopy of nuclei produced after neutron induced reactions. The future upgrade of the instrument aims to explore the neutron-rich region of the nuclear chart with higher selectivity by identifying the fragments produced after neutron induced fission. The Gas-Filled-Magnet (GFM) technique has been chosen in order to obtain a good mass separation (50 msr and P/P > 10%). A GFM design consisting of a 1/r magnetic field index and Thales circle-shaped entrance and exit magnet edges is proposed. The characteristic of the magnet is presented with realistic magnetic field calculations and Monte-Carlo simulations.

Abstract

International audience; The reactor antineutrino anomaly might be explained by the oscillation of reactor antineutrinos toward a sterile neutrino of eV mass. In order to explore this hypothesis, the STEREO experiment measures the antineutrino energy spectrum in six different detector cells covering baselines between 9 and 11 m from the compact core of the ILL research reactor. In this Letter, results from 66 days of reactor turned on and 138 days of reactor turned off are reported. A novel method to extract the antineutrino rates has been developed based on the distribution of the pulse shape discrimination parameter. The test of a new oscillation toward a sterile neutrino is performed by comparing ratios of cells, independent of absolute normalization and of the prediction of the reactor spectrum. The results are found to be compatible with the null oscillation hypothesis and the best fit of the reactor antineutrino anomaly is excluded at 97.5% C.L.

Abstract

The stereo experiment is searching for a non-standard oscillation in the propagation of anti-neutrinos produced by a nuclear reactor which could be the sign for the existence of a sterile state of eV mass and the origin of the reactor anti-neutrino anomaly. In this paper, results from 66 days of reactor turned on and 138 days of reactor turned off are reported excluding large amplitude oscillations. A special focus is put on the data analysis and studies of correlated backgrounds. In particular the origin of the correlated background measured in reactor turned off periods is discussed. This background mainly originates from neutrons produced by cosmic radiation.
