Abstract: We present the analysis of stellar binary microlensing event OGLE-2015-BLG-0060 based on observations obtained from 13 different telescopes. Intensive coverage of the anomalous parts of the light curve was achieved by automated follow-up observations from the robotic telescopes of the Las Cumbres Observatory. We show that, for the first time, all main features of an anomalous microlensing event are well covered by follow-up data, allowing us to estimate the physical parameters of the lens. The strong detection of second-order effects in the event light curve necessitates the inclusion of longer-baseline survey data in order to constrain the parallax vector. We find that the event was most likely caused by a stellar binary-lens with masses $M_{\star1} = 0.87 \pm 0.12 M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\star2} = 0.77 \pm 0.11 M_{\odot}$. The distance to the lensing system is 6.41 $\pm 0.14$ kpc and the projected separation between the two components is 13.85 $\pm 0.16$ AU. Abstract: International audience; The damage accumulation process in MgO single crystals under medium-energy heavy ion irradiation (1.2 MeV Au) at fluences up to 4 x 1014 cm(-2) has been studied at three different temperatures: 573, 773, and 1073 K. Disorder depth profiles have been determined through the use of the Rutherford back-scattering spectrometry in channeling configuration (RBS/C). The analysis of the RBS/C data reveals two steps in the MgO damage process, irrespective of the temperature. However, we find that for increasing irradiation temperature, the damage level decreases and the fluence at which the second step takes place increases. A shift of the damage peak at increasing fluence is observed for the three temperatures, although the position of the peak depends on the temperature. These results can be explained by an enhanced defect mobility which facilitates defect migration and may favor defect annealing. X-ray diffraction reciprocal space maps confirm the results obtained with the RBS/C technique. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Ceramic materials have become widely used in various fields of material science, and ceramic oxides such as cubic zirconia (c-${\mathrm{ZrO}}_{2})$ and magnesia (MgO) are candidate materials for nuclear energy applications. For the corresponding in-service conditions of these materials, there is a crucial need in studies at moderate or high temperatures of the physical phenomena underlying the damage buildup under irradiation. In the present work, we show, using x-ray diffraction, that these two materials exhibit a similar damage accumulation process under ion irradiation at fixed temperature. However, they display an unexpected opposite damaging rate to changes in the irradiation temperature. In fact, as the temperature is increased, the final damage state is reached earlier in c-${\mathrm{ZrO}}_{2}$ while it is delayed in MgO. Rate equation cluster dynamics simulations show that defect clustering is favored over defect recombination in c-${\mathrm{ZrO}}_{2}$, but the situation is reversed for MgO, explaining the observed opposite response to temperature of the two materials. This contrasting behavior can be rationalized in terms of nonequivalent interstitial versus vacancy defect migration energies in MgO. We finally demonstrate that these results allow for a qualitative prediction of the evolution of the experimental irradiation-induced disorder with temperature, henceforth potentially reducing the cost in selecting and developing ad hoc materials.

Abstract: International audience; The response of zirconium carbide to heavy-ion irradiation at room temperature has been studied by X-ray diffraction, ion channeling and transmission electron microscopy. Below 5 × 1014 cm−2, we observe a build-up of elastic strain with increasing fluences. At this threshold fluence the strain is released and important dechanneling appears as well as visible TEM damage. With increasing fluence, this damage is found to spread in the material deeper than the depth of direct damaging by the ion beam. These experimental observations are reproduced and explained by Density Functional Theory informed Rate Equation Cluster Dynamics simulations. Simulations show that the response of ZrC upon ion-irradiation is driven by the diffusion and clustering of interstitials. The two-step evolution seen in experiments stems from the growth of interstitial clusters with a concomitant starvation of the smallest clusters induced by the continuous accumulation of vacancies. The damaging of the material beyond the range of primary damage is driven by diffusion of interstitials.

Abstract: International audience; Modification of materials using ion beams has become a widespread route to improve or design materials for advanced applications, from ion doping for microelectronic devices to emulation of nuclear reactor environments. Yet, despite decades of studies, major issues regarding ion/solidinteractions are not solved, one of them being the lattice-strain development process in irradiated crystals. In this work, we address this question using a consistent approach that combines X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements with both molecular dynamics (MD) and rate equation clusterdynamics (RECD) simulations. We investigate four distinct materials that differ notably in terms of crystalline structure and nature of the atomic bonding. We demonstrate that these materials exhibit a common behaviour with respect to the strain development process. In fact, a strain build-upfollowed by a strain relaxation is observed in the four investigated cases. The strain variation is unambiguously ascribed to a change in the defect configuration, as revealed by MD simulations. Strain development is due to the clustering of interstitial defects into dislocation loops, while the strain release is associated with the disappearance of these loops through their integration into a network of dislocation lines. RECD calculations of strain depth profiles, which are in agreement with experimental data, indicate that the driving force for the change in the defect nature is the defect clustering process. This study paves the way for quantitative predictions of the microstructure changes in irradiated materials.

Abstract: International audience; n-type 6H-SiC(0001) substrates were implanted with a fluence of Mn+ 5x 10(16) (maximum Mn content of 7%), with implantation energy of 80 keV and substrate temperature of 365 degrees C to promote recrystallization. The samples were characterized using Rutherford backscattering and channeling (RBS/C) spectroscopy and electron probe microanalysis in the energy dispersive X-ray (EPMA-EDX) technique; while the magnetization was studied using a superconducting quantum interference device techniques. In the as-implanted sample, three well-defined specific defect zones were identified as deduced from the analysis of RBS/C spectra. It is shown that the two main vacancy-related and interstitial-related defects undergo limited changes when annealing at 800 degrees C, while a major recovery is obtained after annealing at 1100 degrees C. Strain relaxation was also observed upon annealing as determined from HRXRD. Magnetization was strongly reduced with increasing annealing temperature from 800 degrees C to 1600 degrees C. This effect seems to be related to the dilution effect (reduction of Mn content) due to the local diffusion of Mn as suggested from the results obtained using both RBS/C and EPMA-EDX techniques.

Abstract: The phase transformations induced by electronic excitation ( S e ) and ballistic processes ( S n ) in Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 pyrochlores irradiated with heavy ions in three domains of energy (∼1 GeV, ∼100 MeV and a few MeV) were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In the S e regime at high energy, results show that: (i) ion tracks are formed above a S e threshold of 12.5 keV nm −1 ; (ii) both pyrochlore → anion-deficient fluorite phase transition and amorphization occur; (iii) total amorphization is always observed at the highest fluences; (iv) the internal structure (amount of amorphous phase vs. its anion-deficient fluorite counterpart) and the diameter of tracks depend on many parameters such as S e , the deposited energy density and the recrystallization rate. For irradiations performed with low-energy ions in the S n regime, only the anion-deficient fluorite phase is formed up to a dose of 40 dpa. Thus Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 exhibits an unusual behaviour since this compound is amorphizable by S e and non-amorphizable by S n . Annealing of totally amorphized Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 samples reveals strong differences in the recovery processes with other pyrochlore materials that are related to their different chemical compositions.

Abstract: We study the optical and microstructural properties of silver/amorphous carbon (Ag/a-C) nanocomposite thin film and its modification induced by swift heavy ion irradiation. Ag nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a-C matrix were synthesized by co-sputtering of Ag and graphite by 1.5 keV neutral Ar atom beam. These Ag NPs were irradiated by 120 MeV Ag ions at different fluences ranging from 1 × 10 12 to 3 × 10 13 ions/cm 2 . Optical absorption studies revealed that surface plasmon resonance of Ag NPs in pristine film occurs at a wavelength of ~ 430 nm and it shows a blue shift (~ 26 nm) with increasing ion fluence up to 3 × 10 13 ions/cm 2 . Transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy were used to quantify particle size and metal atomic fraction, respectively, in the nanocomposite films. The growth of Ag NPs with bi-model distribution at a fluence of 3 × 10 13 ions/cm 2 was observed with ion irradiation. Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate the effect of heavy ion irradiation on carbon matrix. The blue shift in plasmonic wavelength is explained in terms of increase in sp 2 content in carbon matrix by heavy ion irradiation due to thermal energy deposition which leads to a decrease in dielectric properties of the matrix.

Abstract: Pigments and paint materials are known to be sensitive to particle irradiation. Occasionally, the analysis of paintings by PIXE can induce a slight or dark stain depending on the experimental conditions (beam current, dose, particle energy). In order to understand this discoloration, we have irradiated various types of art white pigments – lead white (hydrocerussite and basic lead sulfate), gypsum, calcite, zinc oxide and titanium oxide – with an external 3 MeV proton micro-beam commonly used for PIXE experiments. We have observed various sensitivities depending on the pigment. No visible change occurs for calcite and titanium oxide, whereas lead white pigments are very sensitive. For the majority of the studied compounds, the discoloration is proportional to the beam current and charge. The damage induced by proton beam irradiation in lead white pigments was studied by micro-Raman and XPS spectroscopies. Structural modifications and dehydration were detected. Damage recovery was investigated by thermal treatment and UV-light irradiation. The discoloration disappeared after one week of UV illumination, showing that PIXE experiments could be safely undertaken for pigments and paintings.

Abstract: Detailed analysis of the morphology of latent tracks created by swift heavy ions from the surface entry point on a pyrochlore crystal to the end of the ion trajectory reveals continuous changes in the track diameter as a function of ion deceleration, loss of track parallelism beyond a certain depth and the evolution from continuous to discontinuous tracks. The tracks exhibit a layered structure composed of a non-crystalline core surrounded by a strained crystalline envelope. Furthermore, surprising local increases in the diameter of the latent tracks are readily observed. This feature can be interpreted using a model based on the concept of effective local energy deposition, defined as the sum of the inelastic energy deposited by the swift track-forming ion and the elastic energy deposited by a primary knock-on atom inside the ion track. Abstract: Accumulation of radiation damage in ultra high purity iron under self ion irradiation without and with simultaneous He implantation was investigated in bulk and thin foil form to assess, on the one hand, the effect of free surfaces and, on the other hand, the influence of He. Specimens were irradiated at room temperature to a dose of 0.8 dpa and similar to 900 appm He content. We found in thin foils after irradiation with single beam a majority of a(0) < 100 > type loops, while in the presence of He it is the 1/2 a(0) < 111 > type loops that prevail. In single beam irradiated bulk samples most of the loops are of 1/2 a(0) < 111 > type. In both bulk and thin foils density of defects visible in transmission electron microscope is considerably higher when He is implanted with prevailing 1/2 a(0) < 111 > dislocation loops, indicating that He stabilizes them. Abstract: The effect of He on the primary damage induced by irradiation in ultrahigh-purity (UHP) Fe and Fe(Cr) alloys was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Materials were irradiated at room temperature in situ by TEM in a microscope coupled to two ion accelerators, simultaneously providing 500 keV Fe+ and 10 keV He+ ions. Single Fe ion and dual Fe and He ion beam experiments were performed up to a dose of 1 dpa and to a He content of up to 1000 appm. Defects appear in the form of nanometric black dots with sizes between 1 and 5 nm. Defocused images reveal a dense population of sub-nanometric cavities after both single-beam and dual-beam irradiation. In Fe(Cr) alloys, the number densities of visible black dot defects still resolved in TEM are significantly higher after single than after dual-beam irradiation. In UHP Fe, conversely, the presence of He strongly increases the defect number density. The presence of He changes a a(0)< 1 0 0 > dominated defect population to a 1/2a(0)< 1 1 1 > dominated one in all materials, and the more so in UHP Fe. It appears that Cr increases the number of visible defects relative to UHP Fe. The dependence with increasing Cr content is weak, however, showing only a slight decrease in the number densities. The decrease in the density of visible a(0)< 1 0 0 > loops and increase in the visible 1/2a(0)< 1 1 1 > loops in all materials when He is present supports the idea that visible a(0)< 1 0 0 > loops are formed by the interaction between mobile 1/2a(0)(1 1 1) loops, as the latter would be immobilized by He already at sub-microscopic sizes. Abstract: International audience; A high purity Fe15Cr alloy has been irradiated with 1 MeV electrons at 573 K to doses up to 0.7 dpa. Alpha' precipitates have been revealed by Atom Probe Tomography (APT). They were not associated with the irradiation induced defects confirming a radiation-enhanced mechanism. Comparison with literature shows that alpha' precipitation occurred after similar doses after neutron and electron irradiations but not under ion irradiation. Electron irradiation is more efficient to enhance alpha' precipitation. The same a Cr solubility limit as under neutron irradiation were found. alpha' Cr equilibrium composition at 573 K has been measured for the first time with APT.

Abstract: International audience; The disordering sequence of Y2Ti2O7 pyrochlore, a nano-oxide phase that strengthens ODS steels under irradiation is studied in the experimental and modeling framework. XRD analysis has been performed considering both swift heavy ion and low energy/low mass ion irradiations. The simulation within molecular dynamics of Frenkel pair accumulation proves able to reproduce the variation of the amorphization fluence with temperature. XRD patterns calculated from the simulations reproduce well the patterns observed experimentally in the literature. Both experiments and calculations point to a first transition from pyrochlore to fluorite before an eventual amorphization. For swift heavy ion irradiations with 93 MeV Xe ions, tracks of direct impact amorphization are visible by HRTEM. Advanced refinement shows that one third of the pyrochlore impacted by an ion transforms into fluorite, while two third are directly amorphized.

Abstract: International audience; Fabrications of ZnS nanocrystalline thin films at different substrate temperatures (T-S) of 200, 300 and 400 degrees C by means of pulsed laser deposition are presented. Thin film deposited at TS of 200 degrees C is in cubic zinc-blende (ZB) structure while those deposited at TS of 300 and 400 degrees C are in hexagonal wurtzite (W) phase. The grain size, surface roughness and bandgap of the films increases with increasing TS. The zinc vacancies and interstitials in the films increases while sulfur vacancies decreases with increasing TS. The variation of zinc and sulfur vacancies in ZnS films with TS is responsible for structural phase transition from ZB to W which causes the change in energy bandgap.

Abstract: International audience; The initial stages of defect generation in magnesia (MgO) single crystals irradiated with 1.2 MeV Au+ ions at 573, 773, and 1073 K and at different fluences have been studied. High-resolution X-ray diffraction was used to measure the irradiation-induced elastic strain. Point-defect relaxation volumes were computed using density functional theory calculations. The defect concentration was then calculated. It was found to increase with ion fluence at all temperatures, with maximum values being similar to 0.46 % at 573 K, similar to 0.24 % at 773 K, and similar to 0.13 % at 1073 K. The decrease in the maximum strain with increasing temperature indicates a dynamic annealing. The defect generation efficiencies were found to be very low and the values obtained were in the range of similar to 2.4, 1.2, and 0.6 % at 573, 773, and 1073 K, respectively. An annealing effect due to electronic energy deposition is suspected to explain these low values.

Abstract: Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) single crystals were irradiated with 4-MeV Au ions at several temperatures from RT up to 800 degrees C. For each temperature, the amount of damage created by irradiation was measured as a function of the ion fluence by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry in channeling geometry (RBS/C). In all cases the damage exhibits a peak around the ion projected range (similar to 500 nm) and it accumulates via a multi-step process. Furthermore, the damage build-up strongly depends on the irradiation temperature: the occurrence of the second stage of damage accumulation, which presents a high increase of the damage fraction, is shifted towards lower fluences as the temperature is increased. Abstract: The present work reports the formation of Ni nanoparticles inside the SiO2 matrix and deals with the influence of Ni concentration on structural and magnetic properties of Ni–SiO2 nanocomposite thin films. The films with varying Ni concentration (20–55 at% measured by Rutherford back scattering spectroscopy) were deposited using DC/RF magnetron co-sputtering. TEM and XRD analysis reveal the formation of FCC Ni nanoparticles in all the samples. The particle size varies from 3 to 10 nm as a function of Ni concentration. The surface roughness of the films is also found to increase with increase in nickel concentration. Magnetic measurements show that the Ni nanoparticles behave as superparamagnets when their size is ≤6 nm, in spite of their large volume fractions. The results show that the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles can be controlled by their size and Ni concentration in the samples.

Abstract: Silicon carbide is one of the candidate materials for core components of some nuclear reactor projects (Gen-IV). In order to improve their thermo-mechanical properties, materials with nanometric grain size are considered. For such materials, nearly no data concerning their behaviour under irradiation are available. In this paper, we study the damage and subsequent recovery of a nanostructured 3C–SiC ceramic. Samples were irradiated at room temperature with 4 MeV Au ions and subsequently annealed. Their structural modifications are analysed with a grazing incidence X-ray diffraction method. Results show that these nanoceramic materials present the same damage kinetics during irradiation as conventional micrometric grained SiC, with total amorphisation at the highest fluence. However, while the recrystallisation of a conventional ceramic is expected to occur through an epitaxial recrystallisation from the non-damaged parts of the large grains, the nanometric material is healed only after annealing at 1000 °C through mechanisms that can be attributed to a heterogeneous nucleation and growth of β crystallites in the totally amorphised grains.

Abstract: A 2 B 2 O 7 pyrochlores (zirconates with A = Gd, Nd, Sm or Eu, and a titanate Gd 2 Ti 2 O 7 ) were irradiated with swift heavy ions in order to investigate the effects of the chemical composition on the structural changes induced by high electronic excitation. XRD results show that the structural modifications induced by irradiation with 119 MeV U ions are strongly dependent on the sample composition: Gd 2 Ti 2 O 7 is readily amorphized, whereas Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 is transformed into a radiation-resistant anion-deficient fluorite structure. For Sm 2 Zr 2 O 7 , Eu 2 Zr 2 O 7 and Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 , a more complex behavior is observed since both a pyrochlore–fluorite phase transformation and amorphization occur. The results suggest that an ion track is composed of an amorphous track core surrounded by an anion-deficient fluorite shell. The diameters of different track regions were estimated by using a direct impact mechanism coupled with a single overlap process to fit the transformation build-ups. These diameters depend on the sample composition, the susceptibility to amorphization by high electronic excitation increasing with the cation radius ratio r A / r B .

Abstract: This article reports on the influence of the ion energy on the damage induced by Au-ion implantation in silicon carbide single crystals. 6H-SiC samples were implanted with Au ions at room temperature at two different energies: 4 and 20 MeV. Both Rutherford Back-scattering spectrometry in channelling geometry (RBS/C) and Raman spectroscopy were used to probe the ion implantation-induced damage. Results show that the accumulated damage increases with the fluence up to the amorphization state. RBS/C data indicate that 4-MeV implantation induces more damage than 20-MeV implantation at a given fluence. This effect is attributed to nuclear collisions since the amount of damage is identical at 4 or 20 MeV when the fluence is rescaled in dpa. Surprisingly, Raman data detect more damage for 20-MeV implantation than for 4-MeV implantation at low fluence (below 10(13) cm(-2)) where point defects are likely formed.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, we performed irradiation experiments on nanostructured 3C–SiC samples, with 95 MeV Xe ions at room temperature. This energy permits the observation of the combined electronic and nuclear interactions with matter. The grazing incidence X-ray diffraction results do not reveal a complete amorphization, despite value of displacement per atom overcoming the total amorphization threshold. This may be attributed to competing effects between nuclear and electronic energy loss in this material since a total amorphization induced by nuclear interactions was found after low energy ion irradiation (4 MeV Au). Moreover, electronic interactions created by high energy ion irradiations induce no disorder in single crystalline 6H–SiC. But in samples previously disordered by low energy ion implantation (700 keV I), the electronic interactions generate a strong defects recovery.

Abstract: We report synthesis of a transparent magnetic semiconductor by incorporating Ni in zinc oxide (ZnO) matrix. ZnO and nickel-doped zinc oxide (ZnO: Ni) thin films (similar to 60 nm) are prepared by fast atom beam (FAB) sputtering. Both undoped and doped films show the presence of ZnO phase only. The Ni concentration ( in at%) as determined by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) technique is similar to 12 +/- 2%. Magnetisation measurement using a SQUID magnetometer shows that the Ni-doped films are ferromagnetic, having coercivity (H(c)) values 192, 310 and 100 Oe and saturation magnetization (M(s)) values of 6.22, 5.32 and 4.73 emu/g at 5, 15 and 300 K, respectively. The Ni-doped film is transparent (> 80%) across visible wavelength range. Resistivity of the ZnO: Ni film is similar to 2.5 x 10(-3) Omega cm, which is almost two orders of magnitude lower than the resistivity (similar to 4.5 x 10(-1) Omega cm) of its undoped counterpart. Impurity d-band splitting is considered to be the cause of increase in conductivity. Interaction between free charges generated by doping and localized d spins of Ni is discussed as the reason for ferromagnetism in the ZnO: Ni film. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Zn(1-x)M(x)O (M=Co, Ni, Mn) films with different concentrations of transition metal (10-30%)were synthesized by pulsed laser deposition. The substrates were heated at 400 degrees C and the depositions were performed either under secondary vacuum or under an oxygen pressure of 30 Pa. The occurrence of ion channeling in the films during Rutherford Backscattering Analysis, together with X-ray diffraction, optical absorption and transmission electron microscopy, clearly show that the M atoms are in solid solution on Zn sites. Magnetic properties were investigated by means of magnetometry at 5 and 300 K and Electron Spin Resonance. The Zn(1-x)Co(x)O and Zn(1-x)Ni(x)O films deposited under low 02 pressure exhibit both a ferromagnetic and a paramagnetic response up to 300 K, while films deposited under high 02 pressure and Zn(1-x)Mn(x)O films are paramagnetic. Broad spin resonance peaks are recorded at room temperature, from ferromagnetic films only. The nearly isotropic magnetic response of these films, which is observed in ESR when varying the field orientation with respect to the surface, seems to indicate that the crystalline anisotropy oppose the shape anisotropy, because of the strong [001] texture of the films. Abstract: Damage caused by swift heavy ions with three different electronic stopping powers (120 MeV Au9+ (22 keV/nm), 90 MeV I7+ (17 keV/nm) and 70 MeV Ni5+ (11 keV/nm)) in three pyrochlores (Gd2Zr2O7, Nd2Zr2O7 and Gd2Ti2O7) with progressively increasing radius ratios (r(A)/r(B) of A(2)B(2)O(7)) of cations is reported. Since I+7 is one of the ions used, these measurements also simulate fission fragment damage in pyrochlores and identify a potential host lattice for inert matrix fuel. X-ray diffraction on the irradiated materials indicate amorphization in Gd2Ti2O7 at the lowest S-e used, and a transition to anion-deficient fluorite (Fm (3) over barm) structure with about 1% decrease in volume in Nd2Zr2O7 and Gd2Zr2O7 at higher S-e. In Nd2Zr2O7 this is followed by amorphization and Gd2Zr2O7 does not amorphize even at the highest S-e employed. Raman analysis of Gd2Zr2O7 and Nd2Zr2O7, indicate an increase of Zr coordination number after irradiation and the bands become broader due to disordering. Analysis of the results shows that the radiation susceptibility of these pyrochlores in the electronic stopping regime strongly depends on the radius ratio of A to B cations and hence on the energy required for formation of cation antisites and anion Frenkel pairs, similar to their susceptibility in the nuclear stopping regime. The films were deposited by magnetron co-sputtering of a sintered ZnO target with chips of the different doping elements on its surface. The sensitivities of the ZnO films to exposure to NH3 were measured by the quartz crystal microbalance method using the resonance frequency shift. The adsorption process was investigated over an aqueous solution of ammonia with 100 ppm concentration. Abstract: International audience; This paper reports the formation processes of crystalline Sn nanostructured films grown under ultra high vacuum conditions on monocrystalline yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates with (10 0) orientation. The microstructure of the films was analyzed using SEM and X-ray diffraction. Evaporation of Sit films yields crystallographically well-defined metallic islands of different shapes depending on the substrate temperature. The overall growth mechanism appears to follow the Stranski-Krastanov type. Irradiation of deposited films was performed at room temperature with 4 MeV Au2+ ions at a fluence of 10(15) cm(-2) to induce material decomposition and aggregation of host atoms. X-ray diffraction and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) experiments conducted on Sn films deposited on YSZ(l 00) prior to and after irradiation demonstrate that ion irradiation drives a structural phase transformation for Sri and Zr-rich compositions. Abstract: International audience; Oxides with the fluorite-type structure are radiation tolerant materials. They are widely used or envisaged in hostile nuclear environments, such as nuclear fuels or inert transmutation matrices for actinide burning. Study of the radiation stability of this class of solids in various radiative fields is of major importance. Two issues which may affect the stability of materials are considered in this work: the production of radiation damage (ballistic contribution); the modification of the matrix composition by doping (chemical contribution). Both contributions may drastically affect the solid stability. Urania and zirconia single crystals were chosen as fluorite-type canonical systems. They were implanted with low-energy inert gases (He or Xe). The damage in-growth, due to both ballistic and chemical contributions, was investigated by in situ RBS/C experiments in the channelling mode and TEM. Two main steps in the disordering kinetics were observed for both inert gases. Relevant key parameters were found to be: the number of displaced lattice atoms created by the slowing-down of energetic ions during the implantation process,, the concentration of noble gas atoms in the solid which cause the formation of large stress fields surrounding gas aggregates. Abstract: International audience; Helium behaviour in irradiated uranium dioxide may play an important role in the mechanical stability of nuclear fuels during and after its use in nuclear power plants. Helium migration mechanisms in bulk UO2 have already been the subject of theoretical studies but there is a lack of experimental data relating to the most stable location in the crystal. To this end, we have studied uranium dioxide samples implanted with helium ions at low fluence before and after thermal annealing in the range 600 and 800 °C. UO2 single crystals were implanted with 50 keV−3He ions at the fluence of 1 × 1015 at cm−2 and the location in the lattice of helium atoms was investigated using NRA (Nuclear Reaction Analysis) based on the reaction of 3He with deuterons (3He (d,p) 4He) in a channelling mode, recording angular scans across axes and planes. Furthermore, the uranium sub-lattice was analysed by the classical RBS method. After implantation, the experimental angular scans recorded across the main crystallographic axes and along major planes show that the helium atoms in their large majority occupy octahedral interstitial sites. No modification of the occupied crystallographic site was found after annealing at 600 °C. Conversely, no crystallographic relationship between matrix and helium signals was revealed following annealing at 800 °C. The latter feature is likely related to the clustering of implanted helium atoms into gas-filled bubbles. These experimental results have been quantified and interpreted using Monte Carlo simulations with the McChasy code.

Abstract: International audience; {111}- and {100}-oriented UO2 single crystals were irradiated with 500-keV Ce3+ ions in the 1014 - 9x1014 cm-2 fluence range. The irradiation-induced strain was monitored using high-resolution X-ray diffraction. A mechanical modelling dedicated to thin irradiated layers was applied to account for the reaction of the unirradiated part of the crystals. The elastic strain, which is confined along the surface normal of the samples, increases with ion fluence until it is dramatically relieved. This behaviour is observed for both orientations. While the measured elastic strain depends on the crystallographic direction, the strain due to irradiation defects only is found to be equal for both directions, with a maximum value of ∼0.5%. Strain relaxation takes place at the damage peak, but the in-plane lattice parameter of the irradiated layer remains unchanged and equal to that of the pristine material. Meanwhile, the strain at the damaged/pristine interface continues to increase.

The damage build-up was studied by micro-Raman spectroscopy that shows a progressive amorphization by the decrease and broadening of 6H-SiC lattice phonon peaks and the related growth of bands assigned to Si-Si and C-C homonuclear bonds. A saturation of the lattice damage fraction deduced from Raman spectra is found for ~0.8 dpa (i.e. ion fluence of 3 x 10(14)cm(-2)). This process is accompanied by an increase and saturation of the out-of-plane expansion (also for ~0.8 dpa), deduced from the step height at the sample surface, as measured by phase-shift interferometry. Isochronal thermal annealing experiments were then performed on partially amorphous (from 30 to 90%) and fully amorphous samples for temperatures from 200 degrees C up to 1500 degrees C under vacuum. Damage recovery and densification take place at the same annealing stage with an onset temperature of ~200 degrees C. Almost complete 6H polytype regrowth is found for partially amorphous samples (for doses lower than 0.8 dpa) at 1000 degrees C, whereas a residual damage and swelling remain for larger doses. In the latter case, these unrelaxed internal stresses give rise to an exfoliation process for higher annealing temperatures.

Abstract: Ceramic oxides and carbides are promising matrices for the immobilization and/or transmutation of nuclear wastes, cladding materials for gas-cooled fission reactors and structural components for fusion reactors. For these applications there is a need of fundamental data concerning the behavior of nuclear ceramics upon irradiation. This article is focused on the presentation of a few remarkable examples regarding ion-beam modifications of nuclear ceramics with an emphasis on the mechanisms leading to damage creation and phase transformations. Results obtained by combining advanced techniques (Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and channeling, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy) concern irradiations in a broad energy range (from key to GeV) with the aim of exploring both nuclear collision (S-n) and electronic excitation (S-e) regimes. Finally, the daunting challenge of the demonstration of the existence of synergistic effects between S-n and S-e is tackled by discussing the healing due to intense electronic energy deposition (SHIBIEC) and by reporting results recently obtained in dual-beam irradiation (DBI) experiments. Abstract: The first walls of future fusion reactors will be exposed to 14 MeV neutron irradiation. In order to gain insight into their radiation resistance, model materials (a high purity iron and a Fe-5.40 wt.% Cr alloy) have been ion-irradiated in the JANNuS facility to high doses with and without helium. The materials were self-ion-irradiated at 500 degrees C up to similar to 100 displacements per atom (dpa) with gas implantation rates equal to 0, 2.5 and 25 appm He dpa(-1). He and Cr effects on the radiation damage formation have been studied at the microscopic scale by transmission electron microscopy. In pure Fe, a coarse dislocation network was observed after irradiation, irrespective of helium implantation rate. Concerning the V-containing features (nanobubbles or cavities), few large cavities were observed in pure iron irradiated without helium. The main effect of helium implantation was to increase their density and diminish their size. The main effect of chromium was to reduce the swelling for all the He implantation rates. Abstract: International audience; Cubic zirconia, an elastically anisotropic material, has been irradiated with 300 keV Cs+ ions and the irradiation-induced elastic strain has been measured using x-ray diffraction (XRD). In order to highlight the influence of the elastic properties on the strain level, two different cases have been investigated: (i) {1 0 0} versus {1 1 1}-oriented zirconia single crystals and (ii) {1 0 0} zirconia versus {1 0 0} strontium titanate. In the former case, raw experimental results show that the {1 0 0} planes deform less than the {1 1 1} planes. However, with a modelling that takes into account the effect of the elastic properties, it is demonstrated that the strain due to irradiation defects only is the same for both orientations (with a maximum value of ~0.8%). Combined use of this modelling and of a dedicated computer program for fitting XRD data allowed determining both defect concentration (~1%) and relaxation volume (~0.5 atomic volume). In the latter case, it is shown that elastic properties affect the measured strain in irradiated zirconia and strontium titanate. However, a difference between the two materials remains even taking into account this effect, confirming that different compounds of a same class of materials (namely ceramic oxides) can exhibit a different response to ion irradiation

Abstract: Single and dual-beam irradiations of oxide (c-ZrO2, MgO, Gd2Ti2O7) and carbide (SiC) single crystals were performed to study combined effects of nuclear (S-n) and electronic (S-e) energy losses. Rutherford backscattering experiments in channeling conditions show that the S-n/S-e cooperation induces a strong decrease of the irradiation-induced damage in SiC and MgO and almost no effects in c-ZrO2 and Gd2Ti2O7. The healing process is ascribed to electronic excitations arising from the electronic energy loss of swift ions. These results present a strong interest for both fundamental understanding of the ion-solid interactions and technological applications in the nuclear industry where expected cooperative S-n/S-e effects may lead to the preservation of the integrity of nuclear devices. Abstract: Thin films of carbon-containing Au nanoparticles (NPs), prepared by the co-sputtering using a neutral Ar atom beam, were irradiated by 120 MeV Ag ions and also annealed, separately, at increasing temperatures in inert atmosphere. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of the nanocomposite film was observed to be blue shifted (similar to 50 nm) in both cases, with increasing fluence and temperature. The structural changes of Au NPs embedded in amorphous carbon matrix were investigated using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. A growth of Au NPs was observed with increasing fluence and also with increasing temperature. A percolation of Au NPs was observed at 500 degrees C. A growth of Au NPs with ion irradiation is explained in the framework of a thermal spike model. Raman spectroscopy revealed the ordering of a-C thin films with increasing fluence and temperature, which is ascribed to a change of refractive index and the blue shift of the SPR band.

Abstract: For the realization of fusion as an energy source, the development of suitable materials is one of the most critical issues. The required material properties are in many aspects unique compared to the existing solutions, particularly the need for necessary resistance to irradiation with neutrons having energies up to 14 MeV. In addition to withstanding the effects of neutrons, the mechanical stability of structural materials has to be maintained up to high temperatures. Plasma-exposed materials must be compatible with the fusion plasma, both with regard to the generation of impurities injected into the plasma and resistance to erosion and hydrogen isotope retention. The development of materials fulfilling these and other criteria is a large-scale and long-term activity which involves basic materials science, materials development, characterization under both loading conditions and off-line, as well as testing under neutron flux-induced conditions. For the realization of a DEMO power plant, the materials solutions must be available in time. The European initiative FEMaS-CA-Fusion Energy Materials Science - Coordination Action - aims at accelerating materials development by integrating advanced materials characterization techniques, among them the efficient use of neutron and synchrotron-based techniques, into the fusion materials community. Further, high-end transmission electron microscopy and mechanical characterization (also on a microscopic level in order to facilitate tests of small material volumes, such as from neutron irradiation campaigns) are to be more extensively applied in fusion materials research. Finally, irradiation facilities for neutron damage benchmarking are contributing to the understanding of radiation effects. This overview demonstrates by means of a few examples the recent advancements in fusion materials research, e. g. by applying synchrotron X-ray and neutron tomography to novel materials and components. Deeper understanding of radiation effects is achieved by in situ TEM of materials under irradiation. Modeling of irradiation effects is closely linked to activities at irradiation facilities. Finally, new developments in mechanical testing on micro-and nano-scales are addressed. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We investigated the effect of energy loss of ions on the ion irradiation-induced tuning of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) wavelength of Au nanoparticles (NPs) in fullerene C-70 matrix. The transformation of fullerene C-70 into amorphous carbon (a-C) under ion irradiation was used to tune the SPR wavelength of Au-C-70 nanocomposite thin films. It is found that the range of tuning of SPR wavelength increases with increase in electronic energy loss of the incoming beam. The growth of Au NPs with increasing fluence was observed in all the cases and total growth is proportional to the electronic energy loss. The average diameter of Au NPs in pristine film is similar to 4.8 nm and a maximum growth of similar to 3 nm was observed at a fluence of 3 x 10(13) ions/cm(2), when the film was irradiated with 120 MeV Ag ions. It was also observed that nuclear energy loss via collision cascades has lower efficiency for SPR tuning in comparison with the electronic excitations.

Abstract: Carbide (SiC, TiC, and ZrC) single crystals were irradiated at room temperature with MeV Au ions. The damage created by irradiation was evaluated by RBS-C, XRD, and Raman experiments. The results indicate a different radiation behavior of TiC and ZrC as compared with SiC. The accumulation of defects created by nuclear collisions leads to amorphization of SiC at the lowest Au fluence used (2.8 × 1014 cm−2), whereas TiC and ZrC do not amorphize at the highest Au fluence used (3.3 × 1015 cm−2). The different properties of TiC and ZrC carbides versus SiC could be related to differences in the nature of the chemical bonds in TiC and ZrC versus SiC.

Abstract: Studies of radiation damage in magnetoplumbite-type LaMgAl11O19 and CeMgAl11O19 are reported. Ion irradiation was conducted on ceramic composites containing a LaMgAl11O19 phase at 500 degrees C with 10MeV Au+ ions and on ceramic composites containing CeMgAl11O19 phase at 800 degrees C with 92MeV Xe+ ions. The radiation response of these similar LnMgAl(11)O(19) (Ln=La and Ce) hexaaluminate magnetoplumbite phases was evaluated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). LaMgAl11O19 was amorphized by 10MeV Au ions with swelling of the structure within an approximate 2m radiation depth from the irradiation surface. CeMgAl11O19 did not amorphize after 92MeV Xe-ion irradiation, but ion track damage contrast is seen in approximately 5m of the irradiated depth. SRIM Monte-Carlo simulations of nuclear displacements correlate with the experimental results.

Abstract: In order to study the effects of 14 MeV neutron irradiation on materials used in the first walls of future fusion reactors, high-purity iron was ion-irradiated with and without helium in the JANNuS facility. Thin foils of high-purity iron were dual-beam irradiated in situ in a transmission electron microscope using 1 MeV Fe+ and 15 keV He+ ions. Several important results regarding dislocation loops and helium bubbles were obtained. For example, it was demonstrated that dislocation loops with a0 〈0 1 0〉 type Burgers vectors are glissile and can move and eliminate at the surface of the thin foil at 500 °C. A comparison of irradiations with and without helium showed that helium atoms reduce the mobility of dislocation loops in pure iron irradiated at 500 °C. Also, we demonstrated that the heterogeneous formation of bubbles inside dislocation loops found previously is also present for helium implantation rates of ∼80 atomic parts per million (appm) He/displacements per atom (dpa).

Abstract: The effect of volume fraction of silver (Ag) on the growth of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) embedded in ion-irradiated silica films is reported. Films with low volume fraction (LVF) and high volume fraction (HVF) of Ag in silica matrix were prepared by magnetron co-sputtering. The growth of AgNPs under 120 MeV Ag ion irradiation is monitored in situ using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD). It is observed that the film with LVF shows the growth of AgNPs in a nearly single ion impact region, while the film with HVF shows a monotonous growth even in the region of multiple ion impacts. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) experiments are also performed to determine the exact volume fraction of Ag in the silica matrix and to understand the role of sputtering and diffusion processes on the growth of AgNPs. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is carried out to obtain further evidence of the mechanisms of growth. Our study reveals that the growth of embedded nanoparticles strongly depends on the volume fraction of metal in the matrices and affects the dipolar interactions among such noble metal NPs. Abstract: The electronic and magnetic properties of 6H-SiC with Mn impurities have been calculated using generalized gradient approximation formalism. Various configurations of Mn sites and Si and C vacancies were considered. It was found that 6H-SiC doped with Mn atoms possess a moment for both types of substitution. The Mn atom at Si site possesses larger magnetic moment than Mn atom at C site. The energy levels appearing in the band gap due to vacancies and due to Mn impurities are determined and the calculated densities of states are used to analyze the different values of the magnetic moments for different types of substitution. A model that explains the magnetic moment at Mn site is proposed. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Four-phase ceramic composites containing 3 mol% Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (3Y-TZP), Al2O3, MgAl2O4, and LaPO4 were synthesized as model materials representing inert matrix fuel with enhanced thermal conductivity and decreased radiation-induced microstructural damage with respect to single-phase UO2. This multi-phase concept, if successful, could be applied to design advanced nuclear fuels which could then be irradiated to higher burn-ups. 3Y-TZP in the composite represents a host (fuel) phase with the lowest thermal conductivity and Al2O3 is the high thermal conductivity phase. The role of MgAl2O4 and LaPO4 was to stabilize the structure under irradiation. The radiation response was evaluated by ion irradiation at 500 degrees C with 10 MeV Au ions and at 800 degrees C with 92 MeV Xe ions, to simulate damage due to primary knock-on atoms and fission fragments, respectively. Radiation damage and microstructural changes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and computational modeling. Al2O3. Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 and MgAl2O4 phases exhibit high amorphization resistance and remain stable when irradiated with both Au and Xe ions. A monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transformation, however, is promoted by Xe and Au ion irradiation in 3Y-TZP. The LaPO4 monazite phase appears to melt, dewet the other phases, and recrystallize under Au irradiation, but does not change under Xe irradiation. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: International audience; The SiC synthesis through single-beam of C+, and simultaneous-dual-beam of C+ & Si+ ion implantations into a Si substrate heated at 550 degrees C has been studied by means of three complementary analytical techniques: nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), Raman, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is shown that a broad distribution of SiC nanoprecipitates is directly formed after simultaneous-dual-beam (520-keV C+ & 890-keV Si+) and single-beam (520-keV C+) ion implantations. Abstract: Single crystals of 6H-SiC were irradiated at room temperature and 670 K with 4 MeV C ions at two fluences: 10 15 and 10 16 cm −2 (0.16 and 1.6 dpa at the damage peak). Damage accumulation was studied by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry in channelling geometry (RBS/C) along the [0 0 0 1] direction. The irradiated layer is found to be composed of a low damage region up to ∼1.5 μm followed by a region where the disorder level is higher, consistent with SRIM predictions. At room temperature and low fluence, typically 10 15 cm −2 , the strain depth profile follows the dpa depth distribution (with a maximum value of ∼2%). The disorder is most likely due to small defect clusters. When increasing the fluence up to 10 16 cm −2 , a buried amorphous layer forms, as indicated by e.g. Raman results where the Si–C bands become broader or even disappear. At a higher irradiation temperature of 670 K, amorphization is not observed at the same fluence, revealing a dynamic annealing process. However, results tend to suggest that the irradiated layer is highly heterogeneous and composed of different types of defects.

Abstract: International audience; Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Zr2O7 pyrochlores were irradiated with swift heavy ions in order to investigate the effects of the chemical composition on the structural changes induced by high electronic excitation. The XRD results show that the structural modifications induced by irradiation with 93 MeV Xe ions are strongly dependent on the sample composition: Gd2Ti2O7 is readily amorphized, whereas Gd(2)Zr(2)O7 is transformed into a radiation-resistant anion-deficient fluorite structure. Atomistic simulations with the second-moment tight-binding QEq model allow us to calculate the lattice properties of both Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Zr2O7, and also to quantify the degree of covalency and ionicity in these compounds. These calculations clearly show that Gd2Ti2O7 is more covalent than Gd2Zr2O7, thus confirming that the amorphization resistance can be related to the covalent character of insulators.
