The chemical and pharmaceutical industries are the main generators of residues, such as phenolic microcontaminants, including catechol, resorcinol, p-nitrophenol and 4-chlorophenol. Therefore, this work aims to identify these microcontaminants through an emerging contaminant biosensor by means of an enzymatic biosensor constructed with an enzymatic extract from the fungus Marasmiellus colocasiae. Based on the differential pulse voltammetry electrochemical technique, the biosensor was used to analyze the patterns of catechol, resorcinol, p-nitrophenol and 4-chlorophenol. The analysis of a sample prepared with these standards in water from the public supply network was also carried out. As a result, it was possible to verify that the biosensor developed in this study is more sensitive than conventional methods and has a greater affinity for catechol. In the sample prepared with the standards, it was possible to qualitatively identify the presence of 4-chlorophenol, resorcinol and catechol. The proposed biosensor was sensitive and has potential for application in the analysis of microcontaminants in the environment with the detection limit = 0.17 µmol L-1, and the quantification limit = 0.52 µmol L-1. Resumo As indústrias químicas e farmacêuticas são as principais geradoras de resíduos, como microcontaminantes fenólicos, dentre eles catechol, resorcinol, p-nitrophenol e 4-chlorophenol. Diante disso, este trabalho objetiva identificar estes microcontaminantes através de um biossensor de contaminantes emergentes por meio de um biossensor enzimático construído com extrato enzimático do fungo Marasmiellus colocasiae. A partir da técnica eletroquímica de voltametria de pulso diferencial, o biossensor foi utilizado para analisar os padrões de catechol, resorcinol, p-nitrophenol e 4-chlorophenol. Também foi realizada a análise de uma amostra preparada com estes padrões em água da rede de abastecimento coletivo. Como resultado, foi possível verificar que o biossensor desenvolvido nesse estudo é mais sensível que os métodos convencionais e apresenta maior afinidade para o catechol. Na amostra preparada com os padrões foi possível identificar qualitivamente a presença do o 4-chlorophenol, resorcinol e catechol. O biossensor proposto foi sensível e apresenta potencial para aplicação na análise de microcontaminantes no meio ambiente com o limite de detecção= 0.17 µmol L-1 e limite de quantificação = 0.52 µmol L-1.

Selected emerging contaminants in water samples from the Brazilian capital were investigated by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry after solid-phase extraction. In Paranoá Lake, an urban reservoir that will be used to produce drinking water, caffeine was the most abundant contaminant found (average of 53 ng L-1), followed by atenolol (34 ng L-1), N, N -diethyl-meta -toluamide (DEET, 12 ng L-1) and atrazine (3.8 ng L-1). The role of wastewaters discharges could not be evidenced probably due to the water flow and circulation in the lake. However, higher concentrations were detected during the dry season suggesting the presence of point sources, except for atrazine. In source waters, concentrations were lower in comparison with Paranoá Lake waters. Environmental risk assessment shows the need for further surveys for atrazine. For drinking waters, only caffeine and atrazine were detected at average concentrations of 8.6 and 3.2 ng L-1, respectively. No risk for human health was observed.

RESUMO O uso de lodo de esgoto na agricultura promove a reciclagem de nutrientes e de matéria orgânica, trazendo benefícios ao desenvolvimento vegetal e à conservação do solo e da água. No entanto, é crescente a preocupação com poluentes orgânicos que possam estar no lodo de esgoto. A presença de medicamentos (antibióticos, tranquilizantes, antiepilépticos), hormônios (naturais e sintéticos), perfumes, bactericidas, entre outros poluentes orgânicos, em diferentes compartimentos ambientais é uma questão emergente, devido à escassez de informações sobre o impacto potencial associado à sua ocorrência, seu destino e efeitos ecotoxicológicos. Esses compostos, denominados poluentes orgânicos emergentes, podem ser removidos durante o tratamento de esgoto por degradação, transformação biológica, volatilização e/ou sorção ao lodo. Esses processos são influenciados pelas propriedades físicas e químicas do poluente e pelas condições de tratamento do esgoto. Informações sobre características físico-químicas, como potencial de acidez e hidrofobicidade, são importantes para compreender os mecanismos de remoção e para adoção de medidas que favoreçam a remoção de tais poluentes, como por exemplo a alteração nas condições operacionais e/ou adoção de tecnologias. A presente revisão bibliográfica apresenta as características físico-químicas de poluentes orgânicos emergentes e seu potencial de sorção em lodo de esgoto. ABSTRACT The agricultural use of wastewater sludge promotes the recycling of nutrients and organic matter, bringing benefits to the plant development and the soil and water conservation. However, there is a growing concern about organic pollutants that may be in wastewater sludge. The presence of pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, tranquilizers, antiepileptics), hormones (natural and synthetic), musk fragrances, bactericides, and other organic pollutants in various environmental compartments is an emerging issue due to the lack of information on the potential impact associated with their occurrence, their fate and ecotoxicological effects. These compounds, termed emerging organic pollutants, may be removed during sewage treatment due to degradation, biological transformation, volatilization and/or sorption onto sludge particles. These processes are influenced by the physical-chemical properties of the pollutant and the conditions of sewage treatment. Information on physical and chemical characteristics, such as potential acidity and hydrophobicity, are important for understanding the patterns of removal and to adopt measures that favor the removal of these pollutants, such as changes in operating conditions and/or adoption of technologies. This literature review presents the physico-chemical emerging organic pollutants characteristics and their potential sorption on wastewater sludge.
