Abstract

The inclusive yield of photons has been measured from deep inelastic interactions of 200 GeV muons on hydrogen. After subtracting the contributions from hadron electromagnetic decays and Bethe-Heitler muon bremsstrahlung, residual photons are observed at low pT and low z at a mean level of 0.15±0.06 per interaction. The quark Compton scattering process is unable to explain the data, thus indicating an anomalous photon production. © 1989.

Abstract

A search was made at the CERN SPS for long-lived fractionally charged particles produced in deep inelastic muon interactions on a Be target using the existing muon beam line as a spectrometer. No such particles were found, leading to upper limits for the production cross section of the order of 10 −36 cm 2 for 200 GeV incident muon momentum and quark masses below 9 GeV for the 2 3 charge and 15 GeV for 1 3 charge.

Abstract

We present new results based on the entire CHOOZ data sample. We find (at 90% confidence level) no evidence for neutrino oscillations in the anti_nue disappearance mode, for the parameter region given by approximately Delta m**2 > 7 x 10**-4 eV^2 for maximum mixing, and sin**2(2 theta) = 0.10 for large Delta m**2. Lower sensitivity results, based only on the comparison of the positron spectra from the two different-distance nuclear reactors, are also presented; these are independent of the absolute normalization of the anti_nue flux, the cross section, the number of target protons and the detector efficiencies., 19 pages, 11 figures, Latex file

Abstract

We report on a high precision measurement at 15m from a 2800 MWth reactor in which 300 000 events of electron antineutrino interactions with proton have been detected using an integral method. The cross section of the neutron inverse beta-decay process has been measured with an accuracy of 1.4%. The ratio of measured cross section to the expected one in the standard V-A theory of weak interactions is: σ ⨍ /σ V−A = 98.7% ± 1.4% ± 2.7% = 0.987 ± 0.030 .

Abstract

International audience; The INGRID(Interactive Neutrino GRID) detector is designed to measure the neutrino beam direction with a precision better than 1 mrad for T2K experiment. INGRID consists of 16 modules and placed around the beam center at 280 m downstream of the proton beam target. The module is a sandwich of iron targets and scintillator tracking planes which consist of X–Y layers. We have constructed all scintillator tracking planes and measured light yield of all scintillators. Currently we install 1st module into the detector hall and cosmic events are observed. INGRID is ready for 1st neutrino event from April 2009.

Abstract

Limits on the neutron flux produced by electrochemically induced nuclear fusion reactions have been set using a very efficient and low background detector based on 6 Li doped liquid scintillator to detect the 2.45 MeV neutron. These limits are of the order of 50 neutrons/h for differet electrolysis experimental conditions and are at least 30 times lower than the claimed positive results of Fleischmann and Pons, and of Jones et al.

Abstract

Neutrinos, Imagerie; Second generation high-performance PET scanners, called ClearPET$^{TM}$, have been developed by working groups of the Crystal Clear Collaboration (CCC). High sensitivity and high spatial resolution for the ClearPET camera is achieved by using a phoswich arrangement combining two different types of lutetium-based scintillator materials: LSO from CTI and LuYAP:Ce from the CCC (ISTC project). In a first ClearPET prototype, phoswich arrangements of 8$\times$8 crystals of 2$\times$2$\times$10 mm$^3$ are coupled to multi-channel photomultiplier tubes (Hamamatsu R7600). A unit of four PMTs arranged in-line represents one of 20 sectors of the ring design. The opening diameter of the ring is 120 mm, the axial detector length is 110 mm. The PMT pulses are digitized by free-running ADCs and digital data processing determines the gamma energy, the phoswich layer and even the exact pulse starting time, which is subsequently used for coincidence detection. The gantry allows rotation of the detector modules around the field of view. Preliminary data shows a correct identification of the crystal layer about (98$\pm$1)%. Typically the energy resolution is (23.3$\pm$0.5)% for the luyap layer and (15.4$\pm$0.4)% for the lso layer. Early studies showed the timing resolution of 2 ns FWHM and 4.8 ns FWTM. the intrinsic spatial resolution ranges from 1.37 mm to 1.61 mm full-width of half-maximum (FWHM) with a mean of 1.48 mm FWHM. further improvements in image and energy resolution are expected when the system geometry is fully modeled.

Abstract

In the frame of the Crystal Clear Collaboration, a small animal PET prototype is presented. To measure the depth of interaction we have chosen a LSO/LuAP phoswich mode. Recent results on LuAP in terms of light yield and scintillation decay are presented. Multi-Anode PMT from Hamamatsu were used for the light detection. A dedicated acquisition electronics fully based on Ethernet was developed for the readout configuration and the data acquisition. In this note, we present the progress status and the perspectives of this work.

Abstract

Cross sections for the disintegration of the deuteron via neutral-current (NCD) and charged-current (CCD) interactions with reactor antineutrinos are measured to be 6.08 +/- 0.77 x 10^(-45) cm-sq and 9.83 +/- 2.04 x 10^(-45) cm-sq per neutrino, respectively, in excellent agreement with current calculations. Since the experimental NCD value depends upon the CCD value, if we use the theoretical value for the CCD reaction, we obtain the improved value of 5.98 +/- 0.54 x 10^(-45) for the NCD cross section. The neutral-current reaction allows a unique measurement of the isovector-axial vector coupling constant in the hadronic weak interaction (beta). In the standard model, this constant is predicted to be exactly 1, independent of the Weinberg angle. We measure a value of beta^2 = 1.01 +/- 0.16. Using the above improved value for the NCD cross section, beta^2 becomes 0.99 +/- 0.10., Comment: 22pages, 9 figures

The Bugey 3 neutrino oscillation experiment has provided high statistics neutrino energy spectra recorded at 15 and 40 meters from a nuclear reactor core. Assuming no oscillations, the measured spectra favor a model of reactor spectrum based on the beta spectra measured at ILL.

Abstract

The Bugey 3 experiment, designed to measure oscillations of reactor neutrinos, has used 3 identical detection modules, each of 600 liters, filled with a new 6 Li-loaded liquid scintillator. These modules were located in two shielding bunkers, respectively 15 and 40 m away from the reactor core. We describe here the mechanical characteristics of these modules, their shielding, the associated electronics, the trigger, the acquisition systems, the calibration and monitoring of these detectors, and the Monte Carlo simulations of their response to particles. We conclude on the overall performance of this new detection technique which has allowed the recording of 120000 neutrino interactions with good neutron efficiency (49%), low background (2.5 evts/hr) and good energy resolution (4% at 4.4 MeV).

Abstract

A search for the decay of isoscalar penetrating particles into ane + e-pair has been performed at the nuclear power reactor Bugey 5, situated close to Lyon (France). The detector set-up, consisting of an arrangement of large-area multiwire proportional chambers, and the data analysis are described. No excess of decay events over background has been observed. For standard axions, therefrom, stringent upper limits for the branching ratio 〈Γ a /Γ γ , averaged over the entire reactor gamma spectrum of magnetic multipolarity, have been obtained. Analysis in terms of the decay χ→e ++e − of a more general axionlike boson χ yields new constraints for the decay constantf χ which enhance existing laboratory limits considerably.

Abstract

Exclusive ϱ0 production has been measured in 120, 200 and 280 GeV muon-proton interactions at high Q2 (1 GeV2 < Q2 < 25 GeV2) and W (6 GeV < W < 19 GeV). The photoproduction cross section decreases as 1/Q4. A shallow t distribution, typical of a hard scattering process is observed and the ϱ0 is found to be dominantly in the helicity zero spin state. The ϱ0s are mainly produced by transverse photons and s-channel helicity conservation seems to be invalid. The data cannot be described by the vector meson dominance model. These data show that at high Q2 even exclusive ϱ0 muoproduction is a hard scattering process and that the soft hadron-like properties of the photon have disappeared.

Abstract

The fragmentation functions of u-quarks into positive and negative pions are determined from an analysis of identified pions produced in deep inelastic muon-deuterium scattering. The method adopted is not sensitive to the knowledge of the primary quark distribution functions. The fragmentation of u quarks to positive pions is found to fall less steeply in z than that to negative pions as expected in the quark parton model. © 1985.

Abstract

Using a lead glass detector installed in the EMC forward spectrometer radiative photons have been measured in 200 GeV muon-hydrogen collisions. The results are compared with the standard QED one photon emission theory of Mo and Tsai and also with the more recent predictions of a multiphoton emission theory of Chahine. We conclude that there is no evidence for any deviation from the standard theory, in terms of the yield and angular distribution of photons with fractional energy,z>0.7.

Abstract

The energy distribution of inclusive hadrons produced by 280 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets are compared. The sum of the scaled energy distributions of the positive and negative hadrons is found to be the same for the two targets. The difference of these distributions is observed to factorise inx andz and thez-dependence is found to be independent of the target type and have a form (1−z)2.1±0.2. The net charge of the hadronic jet is positive at highx even in the case when the scattering takes place on the neutron. These results are in good agreement with the expectations of the Quark Parton Model.

Abstract

The x and Q 2 dependence of the single photon exchange cross section d 2 σ /d Q 2 d x and the proton structure functions F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) and R ( x , Q 2 ) have been measured in deep inelastic muon proton scattering in the region 0.02 x Q 2 2 . By comparing data at different incident muon energies R was found to have little kinematic dependence and an average value of −0.010 ± 0.037 (stat.) ± 0.102 (stat.). The observed deviations from scaling gave the value of Λ MS , the QCD mass scale parameter, to be 105 −45 +55 (stat.) −45 +85 (syst.) MeV. The fraction of the momentum of the nucleon carried by gluons was found to be ∼56% at Q 2 ∼22.5 GeV 2 . It is shown that to obtain a description of the data for F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) together with that measured in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering at lower Q 2 it is necessary to include additional higher twist contributions. The value of Λ MS remains unchanged with the inclusion of these contributions which were found to have an x -dependence of the form x 3 /(1 − x ).

Abstract

We describe here the construction and performance of 2 m long, 5 cm diameter, circular drift tubes made of 1 mm thick bakelite paper coated inside with conductive paint. The longitudinal coordinate is read out with an external delay line system. The measured spatial resolution obtained from the drift time is close to 180 μm (one standard deviation). A system of 1100 tubes has been built for a muon experiment.

Abstract

The energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos has been measured at two distances, 13.6 and 18.3. meters, from the core of a PWR power reactor at Bugey (France). About 63 000 antineutrino events have been recorded using the inverse β-decay reaction ν e+p→n+e+. We observe a difference in the counting rates between the two positions. The compatibility of the results with solutions in a two-neutrino oscillations analysis is discussed.

Abstract

The appearance of a supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud made it possible for the first time to detect the neutrino emission from the explosion of a stellar object. Several groups reported neutrino events, a few hours before the onset of the optical signal1–4. The Mont Blanc collaboration1 has reported a signal that the Kamioka2 detector, supposedly more sensitive, has not seen. The Kamioka2, IMB3 and (marginally) the Baksan4 groups have reported a positive detection that occurred five hours later. Here we show that the assumption that the Mont Blanc (or Baksan) observation is due to the formation of a neutron star leads to excessive energy requirements. If confirmed, these two detections would invalidate any of the presently proposed explanations for the SN1987A event. The Kamioka and IMB observations, on the other hand, match perfectly the standard theory and we suggest that they were the tracers of the neutron star formation. They can then be used to constrain the number of neutrino flavours to be less than four.

Abstract

A search has been conducted for the axion at the Bugey reactor which is owned and operated by Electricite de France. The axion production should be proportional to the magnetic transition of np capture, and be detectable by its decay into 2γ rays. No signal was observed in this measurement. Also no axion signal was seen from a single proton magnetic transition of 97Nb. Using those two results, the axion can be excluded with a mass up to 1 MeV in the Peccei-Quinn formalism.

Abstract

μ+μ− pairs have been observed in deep inelastic muon-nucleon scattering and their masses measured with high resolution. No significant signal was observed at the D0 mass. These data allow an upper limit of 3.4 × 10−4 (90% confidence level) to be placed on the branching ratio for the decay mode D0 → μ+μ−.

Abstract

We have searched for radiative decays of electron-antineutrinos produced by a nuclear reactor giving photons with wavelenghts in the sensitivity range of a photomultiplier. The absence of signal puts stringent limits on such a decay, and excludes it as an explanation for the solar neutrino problem, even for nearly degenerate masseigenstates, provided that Δm / m > 3 × 10 −7 . No previous limits, including those coming from SN 1987A, could exclude such as explanation for small values of Δm / m .

Abstract

Inclusive D 0 ( D 0 ) production in deep inelastic scattering of 280 GeV and 240 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets has been measured; differential cross sections are given and the total cross sections extrapolated to Q 2 = 0. They are compared with the results of photoproduction experiments and with measurements of the muoproduction of charm detected indirectly by multimuon events.

Abstract

New results on the forward produced protons and antiprotons in high energy muon-nucleon scattering are presented. Their W 2 , z and p 2 T dependences are compared with those of the other charged hadrons. Significant differences are observed which can be related to the flavour content of the target and to a difference between the baryon content of quark and gluon jets.

Abstract

Data are presented on the balance of transverse momenta of final state charged hadrons in 280 GeV muon-proton scattering. In particular the way in which the transverse momentum of either leading particles (z > 0.5) f high pT particles (pT2 > 2 GeV2) is compensated by further hadrons in the forward hemisphere is studied. The results are consistent with a QCD based model. The agreement is achieved by including in the model the emission of soft gluons and assuming that the partons have a distribution of primordial transverse momentum with 〈kT2〉 {reversed tilde equals} 0.2 GeV2, a value considerably less then found in previous analyses. © 1982.

Abstract

The measurements of the z and p T 2 distribution of hadrons produced in the interactions of 200 GeV muons with copper and carbon nuclei are shown in different x Bj and virtual photon energy intervals. Effects of the jet scattering are seen at the lowest virtual photon energies while for energies above 70 GeV there is no evidence of these effects. Comparison with a theoretical model indicates that at high jet energies the parton fragmentation distance is greater than the nuclear radius and that the parton absorption cross section is less than 10 mb.

Abstract

Dimuon and trimuon events have been studied in deep inelastic muon scattering on an iron target at an incident muon energy of 200 GeV. The events are shown to originate mainly from charm production. Comparison of the measured cross sections with data taken at higher muon energies shows that charm production originates predominantly from transverse virtual photons. Within the framework of the photon gluon fusion model this indicates that the parity of the gluon is odd. © 1987 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

The cross sections for J ψ production have been measured in interactions of 280 GeV μ + on hydrogen and deuterium (H, D) and also in interactions of 250 GeV μ + on iron. The single-nucleon cross sections in iron are found to be larger than those in H, D. The mean ratio of the iron to H, D photoproduction cross sections in the range 60 v GeV is 1.45 ±0.12 (statistical) ±0.22 (systematic error). Within the framework of the photon-gluon fusion model, this indicates that the gluon density per nucleon is ∼45% larger in iron than in H, D in the range 0.026 x Q 2 eff ∼M 2 J ψ .

Abstract

A large multi-cell threshold gas Cherenkov counter consisting of 78 cells has been built for use in a high energy muon scattering experiment at CERN (European Muon Collaboration). It is used with neon, nitrogen or a mixture of these two gases, allowing the pion threshold to be varied between 6 and 20 GeV/ c . The sensitive region of the counter has a length of 4.0 m and entrance and exit windows of 1.1 × 2.4 m 2 and 2.4 × 5.0 m 2 , respectively.

Abstract

A new method of momentum measurement of charged particles through multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) in the OPERA lead-emulsion target is presented. It is based on precise measurements of track angular deviations carried out thanks to the very high resolution of nuclear emulsions. The algorithm has been tested with Monte Carlo pions. The results are found to describe within the expected uncertainties the data obtained from test beams. We also present a comparison of muon momenta evaluated through MCS in the OPERA lead-emulsion target with those determined by the electronic detectors for neutrino-charged current interaction events.
