Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are nanoporous crystalline polymers with densely conjugated structures. This work discovers that imine-linked COFs exhibit remarkable photodegradation efficiency to azo dyes dissolved in water. Visible light generates different types of radicals from COFs, and superoxide radicals break N N bonds in dye molecules, resulting in 100% degradation of azo dyes within 1 h. In contrast, these dyes cannot be degraded by conventionally used photocatalysts, for example, TiO2. Importantly, the COF photocatalysts can be recovered from the dye solutions and re-used to degrade azo dyes for multiple times without loss of degradation efficiency. This work provides an efficient strategy to degrade synthetic dyes, and we expect that COFs with designable structures may use as new photocatalysts for other important applications.

As a promising hydrogen storage material, the practical application of magnesium is obstructed by the stable thermodynamics and sluggish kinetics. In this paper, three kinds of NiTiO3 catalysts with different mole ratio of Ni to Ti were successfully synthesized and doped into nanocrystalline Mg to improve its hydrogen storage properties. Experimental results indicated that all the Mg-NiTiO3 composites showed prominent hydrogen storage performance. Especially, the Mg-NiTiO3/TiO2 composite could take up hydrogen at room temperature and the apparent activation energy for hydrogen absorption was dramatically decreased from 69.8 ± 1.2 (nanocrystalline Mg) kJ/mol to 34.2 ± 0.2 kJ/mol. In addition, the hydrogenated sample began to release hydrogen at about 193.2 °C and eventually desorbed 6.6 wt% H2. The desorption enthalpy of the hydrogenated Mg-NiTiO3-C was estimated to be 78.6 ± 0.8 kJ/mol, 5.3 kJ/mol lower compared to 83.9 ± 0.7 kJ/mol of nanocrystalline Mg. Besides, the sample revealed splendid cyclic stability during 20 cycles. No obvious recession occurred in the absorption and desorption kinetics and only 0.3 wt% hydrogen capacity degradation was observed. Further structural analysis demonstrates that nanosizing and catalyst doping led to a synergistic effect on the enhanced hydrogen storage performance of Mg-NiTiO3-C composite, which might serve as a reference for future design of highly effective hydrogen storage materials.

A 3D laser scanning strategy based on cascaded deep neural network is proposed for the scanning system converted from 2D Lidar with a pitching motion device. The strategy is aimed at moving target detection and monitoring. Combining the device characteristics, the strategy first proposes a cascaded deep neural network, which inputs 2D point cloud, color image and pitching angle. The outputs are target distance and speed classification. And the cross-entropy loss function of network is modified by using focal loss and uniform distribution to improve the recognition accuracy. Then a pitching range and speed model are proposed to determine pitching motion parameters. Finally, the adaptive scanning is realized by integral separate speed PID. The experimental results show that the accuracies of the improved network target detection box, distance and speed classification are 90.17%, 96.87% and 96.97%, respectively. The average speed error of the improved PID is 0.4239°/s, and the average strategy execution time is 0.1521 s. The range and speed model can effectively reduce the collection of useless information and the deformation of the target point cloud. Conclusively, the experimental of overall scanning strategy show that it can improve target point cloud integrity and density while ensuring the capture of target.

The appearance of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) makes it possible for a material to possess both high strength and high ductility. It is with great potential to apply HEAs under extreme conditions such as in the penetration process. In this paper, experiments of WFeNiMo HEA and tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) projectiles penetrating medium-carbon steel were conducted by using the ballistic gun and two-stage light-gas gun that can accelerate projectiles to impact velocities ranging from 1162 m/s to 2130 m/s. Depth of penetration (DOP) at elevated impact velocities of HEA and WHA projectiles were obtained firstly. Combined with the macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the residual projectiles, the transition of the penetration mode of the WFeNiMo HEA projectile was identified systemically. The experimental results indicated that the penetration mode of the HEA projectile changes from self-sharpening to mushrooming with the increase of impact velocity, while for the WHA projectile, the penetration mode is always mushrooming. The microstructure of the residual HEA projectiles showed that the phases tangle with each other and the morphology of the microstructure of the phases differs in the two penetration modes. Besides, the evolution of shear bands and fractures varies in the two modes. The evolution of the microstructure of HEAs causes the sharp-pointed nose to disappear and the HEA projectile ultimately becomes blunt as the impact velocity increases.

In this study, based on a closed bomb test combined with computational fluid dynamics, a structural finite element method, and an acoustic boundary element method, a fluid-solid acoustic one-way coupling calculation model is established for the combustion process of energetic materials in a closed bomb, and the effectiveness of the model is verified by experiments. It is found that the maximum peak sound pressure increases exponentially with an increase in loading doses or gas pressure. However, a change in the combustion coefficient of the energetic materials has little effect on the noise generated during the combustion process in the closed bomb. When the combustion coefficient is reduced by a multiple of 16, the maximum transient sound pressure is reduced by 1.79 dB, and the sound pressure level in the frequency band is reduced by 1.75 dB. With an increase in shell thickness, the combustion noise of the energetic materials in the closed bomb decreases, and the reduction range of the combustion noise increases with the increase in shell thickness.

The late Permian to Early Triassic volcano-sedimentary succession associated with the Emeishan Large Igneous Province (LIP) is well preserved in the Binchuan area, Southwest China. This paper presents coupled zircon U-Pb age, trace element, and Hf isotope analyses from the succession, together with whole-rock geochemical compositions, to reveal the origin and evolution of volcanic rocks of the LIP. Zircons from the matrix and a rhyolite clast in the Lower Triassic conglomerate bed yield identical U-Pb ages of ca. 260 Ma and have geochemical affinities to those crystallized from within-plate magmas. These features, combined with the dominance of rhyolite clasts from this horizon, imply a source related to Emeishan silicic volcanic rocks. Zircons from silicic ignimbrite and rhyolite in the upper volcanic succession of the LIP display high eHf(t) values (+4.2 to +12.9), low Th/Nb and U/Yb ratios, and similar eNd(t) values (−0.17 to +0.47) to high-Ti basalts. These chemical and isotopic characteristics are consistent with the eroded silicic volcanic rocks, indicating that the late-stage silicic volcanic rocks were generated by fractionation of high-Ti basaltic magmas without significant crustal contamination. Although the late Permian zircons from the lower and upper low-Ti basalt successions all show arc-like geochemical characteristics with high Th/Nb and U/Yb ratios, the former has much lower eHf(t) values (−11.7 to −3.6) than the latter (+4.4 to +11.6), and the zircons from the upper low-Ti basalt succession show positive eHf(t) values similar to the studied rhyolites. Samples from the lower low-Ti basalt succession have relatively higher eNd(t) values (−2.66 to +3.38) than those from the upper low-Ti basalt succession (−4.48 to −0.82). These geochemical features indicate the early-stage low-Ti basalts may be mainly derived from a previously enriched subcontinental mantle lithosphere, whereas the late-stage low-Ti basalts may be generated from the increasing involvement of asthenospheric mantle source with crustal contamination.

Assembly interfaces, the joint surfaces between the vertical tail and rear fuselage of a large aircraft, are thin-wall components. Their machining quality are seriously restricted by the machining vibration. To address this problem, an in-process adaptive milling method is proposed for the large-scale assembly interface driven by real-time machining vibration data. Within this context, the milling operation is first divided into several process steps, and the machining vibration data in each process step is separated into some data segments. Second, based on the real-time machining vibration data in each data segment, a finite-element-unit-force approach and an optimized space–time domain method are adopted to estimate the time-varying in-operation frequency response functions of the assembly interface. These FRFs are in turn employed to calculate stability lobe diagrams. Thus, the three-dimensional stability lobe diagram considering material removal is acquired via interpolation of all stability lobe diagrams. Third, to restrain milling chatter and resonance, the cutting parameters for next process step, e.g., spindle speed and axial cutting depth, are optimized by genetic algorithm. Finally, the proposed method is validated by a milling test of the assembly interface on a vertical tail, and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can improve the machining quality and efficiency of the assembly interface, i.e., the surface roughness reduced from 3.2 μm to 1.6 μm and the machining efficiency improved by 33%.

With the fast development of the application of magnesium based alloys, the demand for primary magnesium is increasing dramatically all over the world. The Pidgeon process is the most widely used process for producing magnesium in China, but suffers from problems such as high energy, resource consumption and environmental pollution. While the process of vacuum carbothermal reduction to produce magnesium (VCTRM) has attracted more and more attention as its advantages, but it has not been well-practiced in industrial applications and there also is no comprehensive and quantitative analysis of this process. This study quantified the flows of resource and energy for the Pidgeon process and the VCTRM process, then compared and analyzed these two processes with each other from three aspects. The VCTRM process results in 63.14% and 69.16% lower of non-renewable mineral resources and energy consumptions when compared to the Pidgeon process, respectively. Moreover, the low energy consumption (2.675 tce vs. 8.681 tce) and material to magnesium ratio (2.953:1 vs. 6.429:1) of the VCTRM process, which lead to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (8.777 t vs. 26.337 t) and solid waste generation(0.522 t vs. 5.465 t) with a decrease of 66.67% and 90.45%, respectively. Results indicate that the VCTRM process is a more environmentally friendly process for magnesium production with high efficiency but low cost and low pollution, and it shows a good potential to be industrialized in the future after solving the bottleneck problem of the reverse reaction.

The compressive mechanical behavior of composite modified double base (CMDB) propellant was investigated across a wide scope of strain rates ranging from 10-3 s-1 to 4210 s-1 at room temperature, by applying a conventional universal testing machine and a split Hopkinson tension bar (SHPB), respectively. The derived stress-strain curves at different strain rates show a strong rate dependence, indicated that yield stress, ultimate stress and strain energy density of CMDB propellant all increase with strain rate by following a power law function, while the amplification of increase are different. The deformation and damage modes of CMDB propellant has changed from a typical ductile manner (cracking along the axial direction) to a brittle manner (maximum shear failure) with increasing of strain rate. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to explore the microscopic failure characteristics of CMDB propellant. Under quasi-static loading, the nearly parallel micro-cracks propagating along the axial direction and the debonding of RDX particle without particle crushing can be observed. While under dynamic loading, the micro-crack is 45° angle to the axial direction, and multiple cracking modes of RDX particles appeared. Finally, the correlation between strain energy density and failure mechanisms of CMDB propellant was revealed by developing four characteristic failure modes. The findings of this study is very important to evaluate the structural integrity of CMDB propellant.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is considered as one of the most hazardous mycotoxins commonly occurring in grains. Thus, the monitoring of OTA is extremely significant. Herein, a synergistic strategy to detect OTA in grains based on the combination of DNA tetrahedron-structured aptamer (DTA) and hybridization chain reaction (HCR) was proposed. Briefly, DTA was assembled on the gold electrode. In the presence of OTA, the trigger DNA on the top of the DTA was exposed to unfold the biotin-modified hairpin structure DNA to HCR. It could conjugate plentiful streptavidin-labeled horseradish peroxidase (SA-HRP) to form polyaniline (PANI), which was regarded as electrochemical active molecule to detect OTA. In this way, the synergistic effect of DTA and HCR not only can provide stable probe structure to improve the recognition rate of OTA, but also can supply a large number of templates to synthesize PANI under mild conditions. As a result, the biosensor has a good analytical performance for OTA in a linear range of 0.05 to 50 ng mL−1, with a detection limit of 0.017 ng mL−1. The accuracy of sensor is similar with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis.

GRO J1008-57, as a Be/X-ray transient pulsar, is considered to have the highest magnetic field in known neutron star X-ray binary systems. Observational data of the X-ray outbursts in GRO J1008-57 from 2017 to 2020 were collected by the Insight-HXMT satellite. In this work, the spin period of the neutron star in GRO J1008-57 was determined to be about 93.28 seconds in August 2017, 93.22 seconds in February 2018, 93.25 seconds in June 2019 and 93.14 seconds in June 2020. GRO J1008-57 evolved in the spin-up process with a mean rate of − ( 2.10 ± 0.05 ) × 10−4 s/d from 2009 – 2018, and turned into a spin down process with a rate of ( 6.7 ± 0.6 ) × 10−5 s/d from Feb 2018 to June 2019. During the type II outburst of 2020, GRO J1008-57 had the spin-up torque again. During the torque reversals, the pulse profiles and continuum X-ray spectra did not change significantly, and the cyclotron resonant scattering feature around 80 keV was only detected during the outbursts in 2017 and 2020. Based on the observed mean spin-up rate, we estimated the inner accretion disk radius in GRO J1008-57 (about 1 - 2 times of the Alfven radius) by comparing different accretion torque models of magnetic neutron stars. During the spin-down process, the magnetic torque should dominate over the matter accreting inflow torque, and we constrained the surface dipole magnetic field B ≥ 6 × 10 12 G for the neutron star in GRO J1008-57, which is consistent with the magnetic field strength obtained by cyclotron line centroid energy.

The stability of soil organic carbon (SOC), as it relates to resistance to decomposition, is important for greenhouse gas emission and climate change. However, the SOC stabilization and its related influencing factors subjected to water erosion remain uncertain. The objective of the current study was to determine the SOC stability under long-term water erosion and to investigate the link between SOC stability and edaphic factors. Soil samples from eroded, depositional, and control sites in a closed watershed in subtropical China were collected. The SOC concentration, carbon functional groups, soil physicochemical properties, and thermal stability of SOC were determined. The study results showed that the primary component of the SOC functional groups was O-alkyl carbon (reached 40%), and its proportion has no significant difference among different sites. The TG-T50 (the temperature at which 50% of the soil organic matter is lost) values indicated that the SOC thermal stability in the eroded topsoil was higher than that of the deposited topsoil. The carbon functional groups were lack of relation with SOC thermal stability (p > 0.05). However, the TG-T50 was significantly positively correlated with the cation exchange capacity and silt, but remarkably negatively correlated with SOC, dissolved organic carbon, total nitrogen, sand, clay, pH, aluminum, specific surface area, and iron oxides. These results indicated that the edaphic factors, which were strongly affected by micro-environment, are the main factors affecting thermal stability of organic carbon. The SOC stabilization under the effects of long-term water erosion should be addressed from the perspective of the ecosystem.

Solvent extraction is the most important method for rare earth extraction and separation. Currently, di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (HDEHP) and 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (HEH/EHP) are widely used in industrial production, but there are still obvious deficiencies that require further research to resolve. In this paper, the unsaponification extraction of light rare earth ions in a hydrochloric acid medium by di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid-di(1-methyl-heptyl) methyl phosphonate (HDEHP-P350) system was studied. The results show that the addition of P350 reduces the extraction capacity of HDEHP, and also greatly reduces the concentration of acidity required for the back-extraction. It still has a good separation factor for light rare earths without saponification, and the extractant is not easy to emulsify. With an aqueous phase of pH = 2.85, and HDEHP mole fraction XHDEHP = 0.9 (compared with O/A = 2), the separation effect of light rare earth is the best, resulting in the separation coefficient βCe/La = 3.39, βPr/Ce = 1.67 and βNd/Pr = 1.45, respectively. The loaded light rare earth ions extracted by HDEHP-P350 can be easily stripped when 2 mol/L HCl is used as the stripping agent. Finally, the extraction mechanism is discussed using a slope method, and the final structure of the extracted complex is determined to be RECl[(DEHP)2]2P350(o), based on a combination of infrared spectra and 1H NMR and 31P NMR analyses.

In this work, a series of novel proton-gradient-transfer acid complexes (PGTACs) were developed. Their physicochemical properties, including thermal stability, melting point, and Hammett acidity, were measured. The effects of catalyst loading, reaction temperature, and substrate expansion on the catalytic performance were systematically studied. It is found that the combination of bidentate N-heterocycle and H2SO4 (1:2 M ratio) could form simultaneously N–H covalent bond and N⋯H hydrogen bond, which makes the PGTACs excellent catalysts integrate the advantages of strong acids (high catalytic activity) and ionic liquids (phase separation) in the esterification reaction. Moreover, these PGTACs can be reused by convenient phase separation without obvious diminution of catalytic activity. It is concluded that these PGTACs are potential alternative candidates for esterification reaction in the process of industrial catalysis.

The ferrite process can not only purify wastewater containing heavy metal ions but also recycle valuable metals from wastewater. Therefore, it is considered a promising technology to treat chromium-containing wastewater. However, the process has not been extensively applied in industry due to its high synthesis temperature. In this paper, the feasibility of chromite synthesis at room temperature was comprehensively studied. The effects of critical factors on the effluent quality and the crystallization behavior and stability of the synthetic products were investigated. Results showed that the removal ratio of chromium from wastewater was over 99.0%, and the chromium concentration in the supernatant reached the sewage discharge standard after undergoing the ferrite process at room temperature. Increases in the aeration rate, stirring rate, and reaction time were favorable for the formation of stable chromite. The particles obtained by the ferrite process at room temperature were characterized by a compact structure, and the maximum size of the particles reached 52 μm. Chromium gradually entered the spinel crystal structure during the synthesis process, and the molecular formula of the synthetic chromite might be Fe3-xCrxO4, in which x was approximately 0.30. The path of the microscopic reaction was proposed to illuminate the synthesis mechanism of chromite under room temperature conditions. The present study has laid the foundation for the industrial application of the ferrite process in the purification and utilization of chromium-containing wastewater.

Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) are often attached to a main structure to reduce vibration, and the TMDs’ positions are important to affect the structural dynamic performance. However, the TMDs’ positions and the material layout of the structure act on each other. This paper suggests a design optimization method by combining the topology optimization of the main structure and the layout of the attached TMDs under harmonic excitations. The main structure with the attached TMDs are modeled by the continuum FEA method to consider the change of TMDs’ locations. Then they are optimized simultaneously by introducing a multi-level optimization frame, which includes the structural topology optimization and the optimal tuning of TMDs. The locations and damping parameters of TMDs are optimized in every step of the SIMP-based topology optimization of the main structure, so as to fully consider the interactions between each other to improve the dynamic performance. Numerical examples of cantilever structures are studied, and the results show that when the main structure and TMDs are optimized simultaneously, the modal strain energy is more concentrated compared with that obtained by the non-simultaneous optimization approach. Therefore, the dynamic compliance of the target mode is dramatically reduced.

Anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key bottleneck for water electrolysis technique owing to its sluggish reaction kinetics. Interfacial engineering on the rationally designed heterostructure can regulate the electronic states efficiently for intrinsic activity improvement. Here, we report a co-phosphorization approach to construct a VPO4-Ni2P heterostructure on nickel foam with strongly chemical binding, wherein phosphate acts as electronic modifier for Ni2P electrocatalyst. Profiting from the interfacial interaction, it is uncovered that electron shifts from Ni2P to VPO4 to render valence increment in Ni species. Such an electronic manipulation rationalizes the chemical affinities of various oxygen intermediates in OER pathway, giving a substantially reduced energy barrier. As a result, the advanced VPO4-Ni2P heterostructure only requires an overpotential of 289 mV to deliver a high current density of 350 mA/cm2 for OER in alkaline electrolyte, together with a Tafel slope as low as 28 mV/dec. This work brings fresh insights into interfacial engineering for advanced electrocatalyst design.

Broadband photodetectors (PDs) have great applications in both industrial and scientific sectors. In this study, solution-processed broadband PDs with an “inverted” vertical photodiode device structure without incorporating transparent conductive oxides electrodes, fabricated by bulk heterojunction (BHJ) composites composed of a low optical gap conjugated polymer blended with highly electrically conductive PbS quantum dots (QDs), operated at room temperature, are reported. The low optical gap conjugated polymer incorporated with PbS QDs contributes to the spectral response from the ultraviolet (UV)-visible to the infrared (IR) range. To realize the IR spectral response and to circumvent the weak IR transparency of the transparent oxide electrodes, the implementation of a photodiode with an “inverted” vertical device structure with the Au anode and the Ba/Al bilayer semitransparent cathode passivated with the MgF2 layer is demonstrated. Photoinduced charge carrier transfer occurring within the BHJ composite gave rise to decent photocurrent, resulting in detectivities greater than 1012 Jones (cm Hz1/2/W) over the wavelength from the UV-visible to the IR range under low applied bias. Thus, our findings of the utilization of the BHJ composites and an “inverted” vertical photodiode without the incorporation of the transparent conductive oxide electrodes provide a facile way to realize broadband PDs.

Lightweight nanocomposites consisting of magnetic and dielectric units aroused intensive interest as potential high performance electromagnetic wave absorbing materials. In this work, we report a facile and efficient method to fabricate (Co, SiO2)/PPy composites with tunable electromagnetic properties. The absorbing properties and effective absorbing bandwidth can be regulated by controlling the content of SiO2 in composites. The composite shows a maximum reflection loss (RL) of -65.31 dB at 11.12 GHz with a thickness of 3.002 mm when SiO2 being 22 wt.%. The effective absorbing bandwidth reaches up to 5.1 GHz (8.91–14.01 GHz), which covers the entire X band (8–12 GHz). The improved impedance matching, high interfacial polarization and complex electromagnetic synergy in the composites are the key factors giving rise to the higher efficient absorption. The PPy aerogel-based nanocomposites with controllable absorption performance, lower density and strong environmental adaptability will become attractive candidates as advanced microwave absorbing materials.

All underwater drilling and blasting operations generate seismic waves. However, due to a lack of suitable vibration sensing instruments, most studies on the propagation of seismic waves have been limited to shorelines near construction areas or wharfs, whereas comparatively few studies have been conducted on the larger seafloor itself. To address this gap, a seafloor vibration sensor system was developed and applied in this study that consists of an autonomous acquisition storage terminal, software platform, and hole-plugging device that was designed to record the blasting vibration intensities received through submarine rocks at a given measurement point. Additionally, dimensional analyses were used to derive a predictive equation for the strength of blast vibrations that considered the influence of the water depth. By combining reliable vibration data obtained using the sensor system in submarine rock and the developed predictive equation, it was determined that the water depth was an important factor influencing the measured vibration strength. The results using the newly derived equation were compared to those determined using the Sadowski equation, which is commonly used on land, and it was found that predictions using the derived equation were closer to the experimental values with an average error of less than 10%, representing a significant improvement. Based on these results, the developed sensor system and preliminary theoretical basis was deemed suitable for studying the propagation behavior of submarine seismic waves generated by underwater drilling and blasting operations.

Recently, flexible robotic systems are developed to enhance minimally invasive interventions on internal organs located in confined areas of human body. These surgical devices are designed to navigate anatomical pathways via single-port access, such as natural orifices or minimal incisions and intraluminal interventions. With improved precision, spatial flexibility and dexterity, the robotic technology can enhance surgery such that minimally invasive flexible access would become a faster, safer, and more convenient method for intra-body interventions without multiple or wide incisions. However, a lot of works are still required for global acceptance of existing flexible robotic surgical platforms. This review provides extended insights on the design details of two types of flexible robotic systems used for endoscopic and endovascular procedures. As of today, several prototypes of both platforms have been proposed; however, their global acceptability and applicability remains very low. To address these, we present an extensive review on design constraints and control methods which are vital for safer, faster, and better operation of the flexible robotic systems in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Finally, research trends of flexible robotic systems and their clinical application status in MIS are discussed along with some of the technical and technological challenges hindering their prominence.

Sodium-ion capacitors (SICs) have attracted appreciable attention in virtue of the higher energy and power densities compared with their rivals, supercapacitors and sodium-ion batteries. Due to the lack of sodium resources in cathode, presodiation is critical for SICs to further augment performances. However, current presodiation strategy utilizes metallic sodium as the presodiation material. In this strategy, assembling/disassembling of half-cells is required, which is dangerous and increases the time and cost of SIC leading to the restriction of their industrialization and commercialization. Herein we present a safe, low-cost and high-efficiency presodiation strategy by first employing Na2C2O4 as the sacrificial salt applied in SICs. Na2C2O4 is environmentally friendly and possesses considerably low expenditure. No additional residues remain after sodium extraction ascribed to its “zero dead mass” property. When paired with commercial activated carbon as the cathode and commercial hard carbon as the anode, the constructed pouch-type SICs exhibit high energy and power densities of 91.7 Wh/kg and 13.1 kW/kg, respectively. This work shows a prospect of realizing the safe and low-cost manufacturing for high-performance SICs commercially.

Multicomponent binary metal oxide-involved hybrid structures with unique physicochemical properties have received extensive attention due to their fascinating electrochemical performance. Herein, a flexible strategy, which involves the preparation of dual-functional heterometallic Fe2M clusters and their subsequent sintering treatment, is developed to engineer novel 3D hierarchical porous structures assembled with MFe2O4 (M=Co, Mn, Ni and Zn) nanoparticles confined within carbon outer shell (denoted as MFe2O4@C HPSs). In this intriguing construction, it can be observed that MFe2O4@C HPSs comprised of carbon coated secondary MFe2O4 nanoparticles with an interconnected carbon network. The as-prepared MFe2O4@C HPSs possess combined advantages of high capacity of MFe2O4 and high conductivity of carbon. As expected, the MFe2O4@C HPSs offer a high reversible capacity, high cycling stability and superior rate performance. The interconnected conductive carbon shells facilitates fast ion and electron transport and accommodates the mechanical strain. In addition, nanosized MFe2O4 particles, which shorten the ion-transport path and provide extra electroactive sites, also improve the reaction kinetics. Moreover, these MFe2O4@C HPSs exhibit good structural integrity during repeated charging and discharging. The research perspective and strategy reported here are highly versatile and shed new light on the synthesis of other advanced electrode for various applications.

Supercapacitors are favored by researchers because of their high power density, especially with the acceleration of people's life rhythm. However, their energy density, especially from the point of view of the whole energy storage device, is far lower than that of commercial batteries. In this work, a kind of customizable full paper-based supercapacitor device with excellent self-healing ability is fabricated by simple and low-cost screen printing, electropolymerization and dip coating methods. The resultant separator-free supercapacitor device exhibits both ultrahigh gravimetric and areal specific energy (power) densities of 39 Wh kg−1 (69 kW kg−1) and 692 μWh cm−2 (236 mW cm−2), achieving excellent supercapacitor performance. Notably, the addition of vitrimers endows the whole device with outstanding self-healing properties, which is helpful for enhancing the adaptability of the device to the environment. In addition, this kind of paper-based device also displays good photothermal and electromagnetic shielding performances. These striking features make paper matrix composites attractive in the fields of supercapacitors, medical photothermal treatment and electromagnetic shielding.

Aircraft icing has long been a plague to aviation for its serious threat to flight safety. Recently, researches about a newly proposed deicing method based on Plasma Synthetic Jet Actuator (PSJA) have just started. To meet the requirements of in-flight deicing, structure of PSJA needs to be adjusted. This paper completed the detailed design and experimental validation of a novel plasma striker, which was a modified version of PSJA. Influences of mass of the moving part and rod shapes on the ice-breaking performances were also studied. Besides, a “conical-nosed rod configuration” was proposed. Its purpose was to ensure a good ice-breaking performance of the plasma striker on long ice, by generating a splitting failure. Results show that, though mass of the moving part was just several grams, ice-breaking performance was better when the mass was lighter. The rectangular rod could generate an elliptical circumferential crack, whose major axis was parallel to the direction of the long side of the rectangular rod. And the “conical-nosed rod” concept was verified to be able to generate a splitting crack which can spread completely to the far end of long ice, and the crack direction was parallel to edge line of the cone. In general, the plasma striker has the advantages of simple structure, low energy consumption, little harm to the flow field and the aircraft skin. Simulations will be carried out in future works to study in detail the working process of the plasma striker.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have aroused considerable attention, particularly for their great potential in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In typical TADF molecules, intramolecular charge transfer (CT) between electron-donor (D) and electron-acceptor (A) moieties is the dominant transition. Actually, CT transitions can possibly occur between different molecules as well. Herein, we used a nonconjugated triptycene (TPE) moiety to space D and A moieties and developed two novel emitters tBuDMAC-TPE-TRZ and tBuDMAC-TPE-TTR to explore the roles of intra- and intermolecular CT transitions. Along with weak intramolecular CT transitions, intermolecular CT transitions are dominant for tBuDMAC-TPE-TRZ and tBuDMAC-TPE-TTR neat films. Particularly, tBuDMAC-TPE-TRZ showed a high maximum external quantum efficiency of 10.0% in a nondoped solution-processed OLED, which was evidently higher than that of a corresponding 10 wt % tBuDMAC-TPE-TRZ-doped OLED with 4,4',4″-tris(carbazol-9-yl)triphenylamine (TCTA) as the host matrix. The results prove that intermolecular CT transitions indeed participate in the CT transition process in these systems and they are helpful to enhance the electroluminescence performance of emitting systems with weak intramolecular CT transitions.

A number of artificial cation ionophores (or transporters) have been developed for basic research and biomedical applications. However, their mechanisms of action and the putative correlations between changes in intracellular cation concentrations and induced cell death remain poorly understood. Here we show that three hemispherand-strapped calix[4]pyrrole based ion pair receptors act as efficient Na+/K+ exchangers in the presence of Cl- in liposomal models, and promote Na+ influx and K+ efflux (Na+/K+ exchange) in cancer cells to induce apoptosis. Mechanistic studies reveal that these cation exchangers induce endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in cancer cells by perturbing intracellular cation homeostasis, promote generation of reactive oxygen species, and eventually enhance mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. However, they neither induce osmotic stress nor affect autophagy. The present study provides support for the notion that synthetic receptors which perturb cellular cation homeostasis may provide a new approach to generating agents with potentially useful apoptotic activity.

State-of-the-art model-driven Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) estimation methods for multipath signals face great challenges in practical application because of the dependence on the precise multipath model. In this paper, we introduce a framework, based on deep learning, for synchronizing perturbation auto-elimination with effective DOA estimation in multipath environment. Firstly, a signal selection mechanism is introduced to roughly locate specific signals to spatial subregion via frequency domain filters and compressive sensing-based method. Then, we set the mean of the correlation matrix’s row vectors as the input feature to construct the spatial spectrum by the corresponding single network within the parallel deep capsule networks. The proposed method enhances the generalization capability to untrained scenarios and the adaptability to non-ideal conditions, e.g., lower SNRs, smaller snapshots, unknown reflection coefficients and perturbational steering vectors, which make up for the defects of the previous model-driven methods. Simulations are carried out to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

Grain size is one of the most important agronomic traits controlling grain yield. Development of novel germplasm with large grains would be beneficial for crop improvement. We report the genetic identification and functional analysis of the LONG GRAIN 6 (LOG6) gene, which is identical to MITOGEN-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASE 6 (OsMAPK6), affecting grain length of rice. Map-based cloning revealed that the long-grain phenotype of log6-D results from a glutamine (E) to lysine (K) mutation in the conserved TEY motif of OsMAPK6. In near-isogenic lines (NILs), the log6-D allele increased grain length and grain yield of Guichao 2 (GC2), Teqing (TQ), and 93–11. Sequence analysis revealed 10 OsMAPK6 haplotypes, with xian (indica) and geng (japonica) harboring different haplotypes. Our findings shed light on the function of MAPKs and offer a novel dominant allele for improving the grain yield of rice.

Nowadays, numerous studies have focused on the newly developed technologies for the thorough removal of tetracyclines (TCs). The efficient removal of trace-amount pollutants requires the development of improved materials with higher adsorption capacity and increased adsorption selectivity. Zn(II)-mediated chitosan nonwoven fabric (Zn-CSNW) adsorbent with coordination capability was explored for the effective and selective removal of TC. The adsorption of TC to Zn-CSNW could reach equilibrium in about 30 min with a maximum adsorption capacity of 195.9 mg/g. It exhibited high anti-interference performance for TC adsorption at low concentrations, with good regeneration and effective reuse. Except for citrate, organic materials similar in structure to TC or common ions in aqueous solutions did not show obvious competition for the adsorption of low concentrations of TC. Additionally, the inherent fluorescence of chitosan and the fluorescence sensitization effect of Zn2+ for TC enabled function of Zn-CSNW as an indicator of the adsorption of TC by changes in fluorescence color and intensity under UV light (365 nm). It can indicate the saturation state of the Zn-CSNW, which will bring convenience to the use of the adsorbent. The Zn(II)-mediated coordination interaction plays a vital role in both the selective recognition of TC and the fluorescence sensing of adsorption amount, demonstrating an affordable and effective strategy for the treatment of water containing low amounts of antibiotics.

The replacement of the disulfide bridge of CPI-1, a peptide inhibitor of light chain of Botulinum toxin serotype A, with the thioether-containing and biscarba-containing diaminodiacid bridge leads to a significant decrease in the degradation by trypsin and increase in the detoxification activity in vivo, the addition of hydrophobic or positive amino acid at C-terminus of modified peptides further improves the inhibitory activity.

Cu-catalyzed endo-selective asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides with ethenesulfonyl fluorides (ESFs) was successfully developed, this protocol provided an efficient and facile method to a wide range of chiral pyrrolidine-3-sulfonyl fluorides with good to excellent results (up to 87% yield, >20:1 dr, 94% ee). Some other chiral sulfonyl derivatives, such as sulfonamide and sulfonate, were easily accessible through simple transformations with high yields, which demonstrated that the cycloaddition products could be synthetically useful in the sulfur(VI) fluoride exchange (SuFEx) chemistry.

Methane emissions in Canada have both anthropogenic and natural sources. Anthropogenic emissions are estimated to be 4.1 Tg a−1 from 2010–2015 in the National Inventory Report submitted to the United Nation's Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Natural emissions, which are mostly due to boreal wetlands, are the largest methane source in Canada and highly uncertain, on the order of ∼ 20 Tg a−1 in biosphere process models. Aircraft studies over the last several years have provided “snapshot” emissions that conflict with inventory estimates. Here we use surface data from the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in situ network and space-borne data from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) to determine 2010–2015 anthropogenic and natural methane emissions in Canada in a Bayesian inverse modelling framework. We use GEOS-Chem to simulate anthropogenic emissions comparable to the National Inventory and wetlands emissions using an ensemble of WetCHARTS v1.0 scenarios in addition to other minor natural sources. We conduct a comparative analysis of the monthly natural emissions and yearly anthropogenic emissions optimized by surface and satellite data independently. Mean 2010–2015 posterior emissions using ECCC surface data are 6.0 ± 0.4 Tg a−1 for total anthropogenic and 11.6 ± 1.2 Tg a−1 for total natural emissions. These results agree with our posterior emissions of 6.5 ± 0.7 Tg a−1 for total anthropogenic and 11.7 ± 1.2 Tg a−1 for total natural emissions using GOSAT data. The seasonal pattern of posterior natural emissions using either dataset shows slower to start emissions in the spring and a less intense peak in the summer compared to the mean of WetCHARTS scenarios. We combine ECCC and GOSAT data to characterize limitations towards sectoral and provincial-level inversions. We estimate energy + agriculture emissions to be 5.1 ± 1.0 Tg a−1, which is 59 % higher than the national inventory. We attribute 39 % higher anthropogenic emissions to Western Canada than the prior. Natural emissions are lower across Canada. Inversion results are verified against independent aircraft data and surface data, which show better agreement with posterior emissions. This study shows a readjustment of the Canadian methane budget is necessary to better match atmospheric observations with lower natural emissions partially offset by higher anthropogenic emissions.

Iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) alloys with different content of niobium (Nb)—0, 0.4 wt%, 0.8 wt%, and 1.2 wt%—were designed and prepared. All samples were then irradiated with 2.4 MeV Fe2+ ion to the dose of 1 and 15 displacements per atom (dpa) at 400 °C. The formations of dislocation loops induced by self-ion irradiation in these alloys were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Nano-indentation tests were used to assess the hardness and irradiation hardening of samples. For the samples before irradiation, the (Fe, Cr)2(Nb, Mo) Laves phases density and the nano-indentation hardness increased with increasing Nb content of the samples. After irradiation to 1 and 15 dpa, both of a/2 and a dislocation loops were produced but no voids or αˊ phase were found in all samples. With increasing Nb content of the samples, the size of dislocation loops increased first and then decreased, while the total volume number density decreased and then increased. The fraction of a dislocation loops increased first and then decreased with increasing Nb content, and increased with increasing irradiation dose. Dislocation networks and the amorphization of the Laves phases were observed in the samples with irradiation dose of 15 dpa. Irradiation hardening of Nb free samples was two to four times that of Nb containing samples, and the irradiation hardening increased with increasing Nb content of Nb containing samples. The experimental results indicate that the increase of Nb content in FeCrAl alloys can increase the density of Laves phases, leading to the decrease of Mo content and increase of Cr content in the matrix. The competition between the two types of solutes affects the nucleation and growth of the dislocation loops.

The thermodynamics of phosphorus (P) doping to spinel Co3O4, for both bulk cases and (100) and (110) surface cases, is studied using first principles calculations. The doping energies of the P atom at different doping sites are carefully calculated and compared. It is shown that P doping at Co sites, at either tetrahedral or octahedral sites, is energetically favorable, while P doping and replacing O atoms are energetically unfavorable. The doping energy difference is large enough to conclude that P doping has a very strong preference to take the Co sites, rather than the O sites in spinel Co3O4. Even when O-vacancy is available, P doping and taking the O-vacancy site is thermodynamically unfavorable. The physical/chemical mechanism behind this phenomenon is carefully analyzed. Electronic structure analysis shows that P doping and replacing the Co atom brings excess electrons to the Co3O4 system, which is beneficial to enhance the electrochemical and catalytic performance of the spinel Co3O4. Our results clarified the misleading results of P doping and replacing O atoms in spinel Co3O4 reported in the literature.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising and energy-efficient technology for desalination. The development of high-performance capacitive electrodes is essential for enhancing the CDI properties for practical applications. Here, a 2D heterostructure was rationally designed and synthesized by face-to-face restacking of NbOPO4 nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via an electrostatic self-assembly process. The as-prepared 2D NbOPO4/rGO heterostructure achieved an excellent ion storage capacity, electronic conductivity, and unimpeded ion kinetics. When applied as electrodes for CDI, the 2D NbOPO4/rGO heterostructure delivered a high specific capacitance of 258.3 F g-1 and an electrosorption capacity of 73 mg g-1 for NaCl solution of 10 000 mg L-1 at an applied voltage of 1.2 V, which is more than five times larger than that of activated carbon. The heterostructure electrode also showed high desalination stability for up to 50 adsorption/desorption cycles. The high CDI performance is attributed to the strong 2D/2D coupling between NbOPO4 nanosheets and rGO. The strong 2D/2D coupling reduced the charge transfer resistance, affirmed via the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique, attesting to the enhanced charge transportation across the heterointerface. The robust 2D/2D coupling was affirmed via the uniform and identical Raman shifts at various random regions, and larger XPS binding energy shifts for the self-assembled NbOPO4/rGO heterostructure. This work demonstrated the potential of self-assembled nanoheterostructures for water desalination via capacitive deionization.

Magnetic targeted drug delivery systems can improve drug utilization and reduce drug side effects. There are still many difficulties to be overcome in clinical practice. The main problems include providing large enough magnetic capture particles to concentrate drug-loaded magnetic micro-nanoparticles (MNPs) to the lesion site. The existing research focuses on the development of targeted carriers, and the magnet device has not formed a mature research system. Based on the recent development of magnet devices in recent years, this paper proposes the research direction of potential magnet devices. From the dynamic behavior of the particles under the magnetic field, the magnetic system and the mathematical model design direction of the optimized magnet are developed. This article describes the obstacles encountered in drug targeting in the study of magnet devices and summarizes the potential development of future magnet devices.

The construction of structures with multiple interfaces and dielectric/magnetic heterostructures enables the design of materials with unique physical and chemical properties, which has aroused intensive interest in scientific and technological fields. Especially, for electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption, enhanced interface polarization and improved impedence match with high Snoek’s limitation could be achieved by multiple interfaces and dielectric/magnetic heterostructures, respectively, which are benificial to high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA). However, by far, the principles in the design or construction of structures with multiple interfaces and dielectric/magnetic heterostructures, and the relationships between those structures or heterostructures and their EWA performance have not been fully summarized and reviewed. This article aims to provide a timely review on the research progresses of high-efficency EM wave absorbers with multiple interfaces and dielectric/magnetic heterostructures, focusing on various promising EWA materials. Particularly, EM attenuation mechanisms in those structures with multiple interfaces and dielectric/magnetic heterostructures are discussed and generalized. Furthermore, the changllenges and future developments of EM wave absorbers based on those structures are proposed.

5-Methylcytosine (5mC) is the most important epigenetic modification in mammals. The active DNA demethylation could be achieved through the ten-eleven translocation (TET) protein-mediated oxidization of 5mC with the generation of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), 5-formylcytosine (5fC) and 5-carboxylcytosine (5caC). It has been known that 5mC, 5hmC and 5fC play critical roles in modulating gene expression. However, unlike the 5mC, 5hmC, and 5fC, the functions of 5caC are still underexplored. Investigation of the functions of 5caC relies on the accurate quantification and localization analysis of 5caC in DNA. In the current study, we developed a method by chemical conversion in conjugation with ligation-based real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) for the site-specific quantification of 5caC in DNA. This method depends on the selective conversion of 5caC to form dihydrouracil (DHU) by pyridine borane treatment. DHU behaves like thymine and pairs with adenine (DHU-A). Thus, the chemical conversion by pyridine borane leads to the transformation of base paring from 5caC-G to DHU-A, which is utilized to achieve the site-specific detection and quantification of 5caC in DNA. As a proof-of-concept, the developed method was successfully applied in the site-specific quantification of 5caC in synthesized DNA spiked in complex biological samples. The method is rapid, straightforward and cost-effective, and shows promising in promoting the investigation of the functional roles of 5caC in future study.

Simple preparation, favorable price and environmental protection have been a long-term challenge in the field of electrochemistry. Herein, we studied and prepared a bifunctional Mo-doped Co3O4 ultrathin nanosheets, which has been validated as an effective binder-free electrode material for electrocatalytic water splitting and supercapacitors. The material has a large specific surface area, high electrical conductivity and exposure to more active sites, breaking down the limited performance and range of use of transition metal oxides. Benefiting from intriguing ultrathin property and conductivity, OER and HER process of 0.4Mo-Co3O4 have a small Tafel slope of 83.7 and 98 mV dec−1, respectively. The current density at 10 mA cm−2 show a low overpotential of 315 and 79 mV and significant stability. The water electrolytic device requires a potential of 1.64 V to reach 10 mA cm−2, and the potential change is negligible after 12 h of continuous electrolysis. In addition, the manifest improved electrochemical performance of 0.3Mo-Co3O4 as supercapacitor electrode material shows high areal capacitance 2815 mF cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2, excellent rate performance (85% at 10 mA cm−2) and retains 90% of the initial capacitance by cycling 5000 at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Moreover, 0.3Mo-Co3O4||0.3Mo-Co3O4 symmetrical supercapacitor has a maximum volumetric energy density of 1.25 mW h cm−3 at a power density of 7.1 mW cm−3 and superior cycle life. The influence of doping on electrochemical performance was studied by changing the content of doped metal ions, which is of great significance for the exploration of supercapacitor and electrocatalytic hydrolysis of bifunctional electrode materials.

Catalytic hydrogenation of sulfur-containing substrates is an important and challenging reaction in the chemical industry. In this work, active carbon supported PdZn alloy catalyst was prepared by self-reduction method using zinc acetate as precursor without H2 atmosphere. During the process of self-reduction, Zn2+ was firstly reduced to Zn0 at 300 °C by active carbon and reducing gas from the decompose of acetate under the promotion of metal Pd, and Zn0 further reacted with metal Pd to form PdZn alloy phase at 500 °C. These PdZn/AC-X catalysts showed the higher conversion and stability for the hydrogenation of 4-nitrothioanisole than the Pd/AC-600 catalyst. The excellent catalytic performance of PdZn/AC-600 catalyst can be attributed to formation of PdZn alloy, in which electron-rich Pd atoms weaken the binding ability between Pd and S and enhance the sulfur-resistance of catalyst. On the other hand, H2-TPR and DFT theory calculation further indicated that the PdZn alloy phase weakens the adsorption capacity of S. Compared with the Pd/AC-600 catalyst, the PdZn alloy phase in PdZn/AC-600 catalyst has not changed and only a small amount of sulfur-containing substrates deposited on the catalyst surface after three cycles. PdZn/AC-600 catalyst exhibited improved stability in the hydrogenation of 4-nitrothioanisole and can be used three cycles with little decrease in activity.

Although transition metal phospho-sulfides deliver outstanding electrochemical performance, complex preparation methods hindered their further development. Herein, we report a facile one-step electrodeposition approach to deposit interconnected nanowalls-like nickel cobalt phospho-sulfide (Ni-Co-P-S) nanosheets onto the surface of carbon cloth. The thin Ni-Co-P-S nanosheets with multi-components and synergetic effects delivered rich active sites, further enhancing reversible capacitance. Therefore, the as-prepared Ni-Co-P-S electrode materials exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in a three-electrode system, showcasing a high specific capacitance of 2744 F/g at 4 A/g. The full supercapacitors based on Ni-Co-P-S as positive electrode and active carbon as negative electrode showcase a high specific capacitance of 110.9 F/g at 1 A/g, impressive energy density of 39.4 Wh/kg at a power density of 797.5 W/kg in terms of excellent cycling stability (91.87% retention after 10,000 cycles). This simple electrodeposition strategy for synthesizing Ni-Co-P-S can be extended to prepare electrode materials for various sustainable electrochemical energy storage/conversion technologies.

The development of multifunctional theranostic nano-agents is an important resolution for personalized treatment of cancer. In this work, we synthesized a new kind of gadolinium boride nanoparticles (GBN) by a microwave-assisted chemical etching method, and discovered their optical characteristics including fluorescence imaging and near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion capability. Bright greenishyellow fluorescence enabled for intracellular localization, while effective NIR-photothermal conversion supported photothermal therapy (PTT). In vitro and in vivo results indicated that GBN exhibited a superior antitumor performance and high biocompatibility. This study demonstrated a promising multifunctional theranostic nanoplatform for cancer treatment.

A sensitive pressure sensor based on ultralight and superelastic supercapacitive borophene-graphene aerogel as dielectric layer is reported. The borophene-graphene aerogel not only combines large specific surface area of reduced graphene oxide and high conductivity of borophene, but also exhibits rich porous structure. The strong synergy and intercalation between two different two-dimensional materials benefit electron transfer and electrolyte ion diffusion. In this work, the discharge properties and electrochemical behaviors of as-cast AZ80-La-Gd anode for Mg-air battery have been investigated and compared with the AZ80 anode. The microstructure evolution, electrochemical behaviors and surface morphologies after discharge have been discussed to connect the discharge properties. The results indicate that the modified AZ80-La-Gd is an outstanding candidate for anode for Mg-air batter, which has high cell voltage, stable discharge curves, good specific capacity and energy, and good anodic efficiency. It exhibits the best anodic efficiency, specific capacity and energy of 76.45%, 1703.6 mAh•g−1 and 2186.3 mWh•g−1, respectively, which are 20.24%, 18.92% and 25.71% higher than values for AZ80 anode. Such excellent discharge performance is attributed to the Al-RE particles. They refine the Mg17Al12 phase and therefore improve the self-corrosion resistance and desorption ability of AZ80 anode.

Implementation of novel γ/γ’ Co-based superalloys with higher strength and improved creep durability is a challenging task for researchers. The lack of atomic-level understanding of plastic deformation behavior has seriously limited the exploration of the full capacity of Co-based alloys. We put forward a comprehensive study of generalized stacking fault energies by first principles to explore the effect of Ni and Al/W on the plastic deformation mechanism of γ’ precipitates in Co-based superalloys. It is found that alloying Ni and adjusting Al/W obviously change the dislocation glide and twinning nucleation in the γ’ precipitates by altering the stable fault energies and the unstable fault energy barriers. Excessive addition of either Ni or W deteriorates the strength even the stability of alloys. The ratio of effective planar fault energy (ΔEp) bridges intrinsic energy barriers and various deformation mechanisms of superalloys at elevated temperatures. Except for alloying effects, the grain orientation also significantly governs the operation of the plastic deformation of superalloys. Our theoretical results agree with the available measurements and well capture the observed phenomena in experiments.
