Abstract

With proper leaching tests, health hazards associated with municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ashes, i.e., incineration bottom ashes (IBA) and incineration fly ashes (IFA), can be quantitatively defined. However, it must be coupled with specific environmental scenarios to draw the proper conclusions. Several environmental stresses based on current management of MSWI ashes were herein simulated with laboratory leaching studies to understand their impacts. The impact of bulk metal recovery on the IBA leaching potential was firstly investigated, suggesting the promoted release for certain metals including those with a relative high content (> 1000 mg/kg) such as Ba, Cu, Pb and Zn. The impact of seawater was also simulated. Most metal release was altered with the new chemistry established. Batch leaching tests were further performed under both salty and acidic environment to understand their aggregated effects, indicating an overwhelming influence from seawater buffering. Lastly, batch leaching tests of the IBA/IFA mixture were performed under various mass ratios, while data were compared with those by their individuals and the theoretical leaching value, unveiling different leaching characteristics during landfill disposal. Hereby, a comprehensive characteristic metal leaching potential was achieved under various ash managements. It provides insights into environmental risks relevant to their current practices. Abstract

Infants and children under 6 years old spend most of daily time in Child Care Centers (CCCs), especially in the tropical regions like Singapore. Environmental exposure and associated risk during this early critical developmental stage is of great public concern. In this study, seven representative volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and five typical phthalates were analyzed in the indoor and outdoor air samples collected from 32 Singapore CCCs. The median of total VOC and phthalate concentration in indoor air was 19.03 and 5.41 μg m-3; respectively. For both indoors and outdoors environment, benzene, toluene and xylene were the dominant VOC contributors (more than 68%). For indoor air phthalates, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and di-butyl phthalate (DBP) accounts for 60-76%. The level of both VOCs and phthalates in indoor environment was significantly higher than that in outdoor, with an average indoor/outdoor ratio of 1.24 and 1.45; respectively. A strong correlation (r > 0.50, p < 0.05) was observed between indoor and outdoor air compounds. VOC and phthalate levels have no significant difference between CCCs with split-unit and centrally ventilated air conditioners. Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate exposure uncertainty and variability for the risk assessment. Overall, the concentrations of VOC were below the healthy reference values from either EPA Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) or Singapore guideline. However, similar to other countries' report, benzene, DBP, ethylbenzene and naphthalene were at levels that could exceed the stringent standards such as Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) cancer and reproductive health-based benchmarks. Abstract

The microbial safety of swimming pool waters (SPWs) becomes increasingly important with the popularity of swimming activities. Disinfection aiming at killing microbes in SPWs produces disinfection by-products (DBPs), which has attracted considerable public attentions due to their high frequency of occurrence, considerable concentrations and potent toxicity. We reviewed the latest research progress within the last four decades on the regulation, formation, exposure, and treatment of DBPs in the context of SPWs. This paper specifically discussed DBP regulations in different regions, formation mechanisms related with disinfectants, precursors and other various conditions, human exposure assessment reflected by biomarkers or epidemiological evidence, and the control and treatment of DBPs. Compared to drinking water with natural organic matter as the main organic precursor of DBPs, the additional human inputs (i.e., body fluids and personal care products) to SPWs make the water matrix more complicated and lead to the formation of more types and greater concentrations of DBPs. Dermal absorption and inhalation are two main exposure pathways for trihalomethanes while ingestion for haloacetic acids, reflected by DBP occurrence in human matrices including exhaled air, urine, blood, and plasma. Studies show that membrane filtration, advanced oxidation processes, biodegradation, thermal degradation, chemical reduction, and some hybrid processes are the potential DBP treatment technologies. The removal efficiency, possible mechanisms and future challenges of these DBP treatment methods are summarized in this review, which may facilitate their full-scale applications and provide potential directions for further research extension. Abstract

We present an analysis of hadroproduction of $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ at fixed-target energies in the framework of non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD). Using both pion- and proton-induced data, a new determination of the color-octet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) is obtained. Compared with previous results, the contributions from the $q \bar{q}$ and color-octet processes are significantly enhanced, especially at lower energies. A good agreement between the pion-induced $J/\psi$ production data and NRQCD calculations using the newly obtained LDMEs is achieved. We find that the pion-induced charmonium production data are sensitive to the gluon density of pions, and favor pion PDFs with relatively large gluon contents at large $x$., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, published version

Abstract

The gluon distributions of the pion obtained from various global fits exhibit large variations among them. Within the framework of the color evaporation model, we show that the existing pion-induced $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ production data, usually not included in the global fits, can impose useful additional constraints on the pion parton distribution functions (PDFs). In particular, these data can probe the pion's gluon densities at large $x$. Existing pion-induced $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ data covering a broad range of beam momenta are compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations using various sets of pion PDFs. It is found that $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ data measured at forward rapidity and at sufficiently high beam momentum are sensitive to the large-$x$ gluon distribution of pions. The current $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ data favor the Sutton-Martin-Roberts-Stirling and Gluck-Reya-Vogt pion PDFs, containing significant gluon content at large $x$.

We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\omega$ meson muoproduction on the proton at COMPASS using 160 GeV/$c$ polarised $ \mu ^{+}$ and $ \mu ^{-}$ beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Abstract

The fundamental building blocks of the proton, quarks and gluons, have been known for decades. However, we still have an incomplete theoretical and experimental understanding of how these particles and their dynamics give rise to the quantum bound state of the proton and its physical properties, such as for example its spin. The two up and the single down quarks that comprise the proton in the simplest picture account only for a few percent of the proton mass, the bulk of which is in the form of quark kinetic and potential energy and gluon energy from the strong force. An essential feature of this force, as described by quantum chromodynamics, is its ability to create matter-antimatter quark pairs inside the proton that exist only for a very short time. Their fleeting existence makes the antimatter quarks within protons difficult to study, but their existence is discernible in reactions where a matter-antimatter quark pair annihilates. In this picture of quark-antiquark creation by the strong force, the probability distributions as a function of momentum for the presence of up and down antimatter quarks should be nearly identical, since their masses are quite similar and small compared to the mass of the proton. In the present manuscript, we show evidence from muon pair production measurements that these distributions are significantly different, with more abundant down antimatter quarks than up antimatter quarks over a wide range of momentum. These results revive interest in several proposed mechanisms as the origin of this antimatter asymmetry in the proton that had been disfavored by the previous results and point to the future measurements that can distinguish between these mechanisms., 10 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables; Matches published version

Abstract

We measured missing mass spectrum of the ^{12}C(γ,p) reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from η^{'} bound nuclei. We tagged an (η+p) pair associated with the η^{'}N→ηN process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle cosθ_{lab}^{ηp}

Abstract

The lepton angular distribution coefficients $A_i$ for $Z$ boson production in $pp$ and $\bar p p$ collisions have been measured at the LHC and the Tevatron. A recent study showed that many features of the measured angular distribution coefficients, including the transverse momentum ($q_T$) and rapidity dependencies and the violation of the Lam-Tung relation, can be well described using an intuitive geometric approach. In this paper, we extend this geometric approach to describe the angular distribution coefficients for $W$ boson produced in $\bar{p} p$ collisions at the Tevatron. We first compare the data with a perturbative QCD calculation at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$. We then show that the data and QCD calculations can be well described with the geometric approach. Implications for future studies at the LHC energy are also discussed., Comment: 8 pages and 6 figures. Published version

Abstract

The $\bar{\rm p} $ over p multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering for the first time using (anti-) protons carrying a large fraction of the virtual-photon energy, $z>0.5$. The data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam impinging on an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2$ > 1 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W > 5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. The range in Bjorken-$x$ is restricted to $0.01 < x < 0.40$. Protons and antiprotons are identified in the momentum range $20 ��60$ GeV/$c$. In the whole studied $z$-region, the $\bar{\rm p}$ over p multiplicity ratio is found to be below the lower limit expected from calculations based on leading-order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Extending our earlier analysis of the K$^-$ over K$^+$ multiplicity ratio by including now events with larger virtual-photon energies, this ratio becomes closer to the expectation of next-to-leading order pQCD. The results of both analyses strengthen our earlier conclusion that the phase space available for hadronisation should be taken into account in the pQCD formalism., 19 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The K$^{-}$ over K$^{+}$ multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering, for the first time for kaons carrying a large fraction $z$ of the virtual-photon energy. The data were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2>1$ (GeV/$c)^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W>5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Kaons are identified in the momentum range from 12 GeV/$c$ to 40 GeV/$c$, thereby restricting the range in Bjorken-$x$ to $0.010.75$. For very large values of $z$, $i.e.$ $z>0.8$, we observe the kaon multiplicity ratio to fall below the lower limits expected from calculations based on leading and next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Also, the kaon multiplicity ratio shows a strong dependence on the missing mass of the single-kaon production process. This suggests that within the perturbative quantum chromodynamics formalism an additional correction may be required, which takes into account the phase space available for hadronisation., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Hadron leptoproduction in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) on unpolarised nucleons allows one to get information on the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks in a nucleon and on the Boer-Mulders function through the measurement of azimuthal modulations in the cross section. These modulations were recently measured by the HERMES experiment at DESY on proton and deuteron targets, and by the COMPASS experiment using the CERN SPS muon beam and a $^6$LiD target. In both cases, the amplitudes of the $\cos\phi_h$ and $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependences for both positive and negative hadrons. It has been known since some time that the measured final-state hadrons in those SIDIS experiments receive a contribution from exclusive diffractive production of vector mesons, particularly important at large values of $z$, the fraction of the virtual photon energy carried by the hadron. In previous measurements of azimuthal asymmetries this contribution was not taken into account, because it was not known that it could distort the azimuthal modulations. Presently, a method to evaluate the contribution of the exclusive reactions to the azimuthal asymmetries measured by COMPASS has been developed. The subtraction of this contribution results in a better understanding of the kinematic effects, and the remaining non-zero $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulation gives indication for a non-zero Boer-Mulders effect., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We have searched for exclusive production of exotic charmonia in the reaction μ + N → μ + ( J / ψ π + π − ) π ± N ′ using COMPASS data collected with incoming muons of 160 GeV/c and 200 GeV/c momentum. In the J / ψ π + π − mass distribution we observe a signal with a statistical significance of 4.1 σ. Its mass and width are consistent with those of the X ( 3872 ) . The shape of the π + π − mass distribution from the observed decay into J / ψ π + π − shows disagreement with previous observations for X ( 3872 ) . The observed signal may be interpreted as a possible evidence of a new charmonium state. It could be associated with a neutral partner of X ( 3872 ) with C = − 1 predicted by a tetraquark model. The product of cross section and branching fraction of the decay of the observed state into J / ψ π + π − is determined to be 71±28(stat)±39(syst) pb.

Abstract

Thermal processing of sewage sludge (SS) has received increasing attention in recent years. Thermal processes valorise the carbon rich organic fraction of SS, while effectively reducing SS volume. However, the fate and distribution of heavy metals (HMs) during thermal processing of SS is an important issue to address because it has impact on the generation of secondary pollutants and the environmental acceptability of the residues for reuse and reclamation. The refractory metals (thermally stable, i.e. Cr, Mn and Ni) are less volatile at typical temperature ranges (200–1100 °C) of thermal processes, and they are enriched in the residues. On the contrary, HMs with lower thermal stability (i.e. Hg, Cd, As and Pb) are prone to volatilisation. However, volatilisations and enrichments of HMs in the residues strongly depend on the characteristics of SS and nature of the thermal process. This review article discusses the volatilisation, enrichment and speciation (or stabilisation) of HMs in the residues formed during thermal processing of SS (incineration, pyrolysis, gasification and hydrothermal treatment). First, it summarises the fundamental aspect of SS in each thermal process. The influencing factors on the fate and distribution of HMs are discussed in terms of process principles, reactor types, operating conditions, pre-treatment of SS, use of additives and co-processing with secondary feedstocks. The use of advanced analytical techniques and modelling tools to analyse the complexity of HMs redistribution during thermal processing is described. Practical and economic challenges associated with HMs in SS during operation of full-scale thermal processing facilities are also addressed. Finally, a brief comparison of HMs redistribution and stabilisation during SS incineration, gasification, pyrolysis and hydrothermal treatment is provided.

Abstract

Under the proper setting of boundaries, leaching behaviors of incineration bottom ashes (IBA) may be predicted using geochemical models. The extent of agreement between measurements and the prediction is often affected by the model development. On the other hand, the inconsistency may also be caused by the complexity of the system for modeling. As such, discrepancies between measurements and geochemical modeling on IBA leaching would indicate uncovered yet significant mechanisms which may not be fully understood by the existing setting scenarios. pH-static leaching tests of IBA were performed, followed by simulations with two geochemical models. Simulations based on the surface area calculated with all leachable minerals provided a better matching with experimental data as compared to that calculated with surface area of Fe/Al oxides only. Yet, certain elements remained highly overestimated (up to 3 orders of magnitude, e.g. Cd, Ni, Sr, Zn, Fe, Al and Mg) or underestimated (e.g. Cr) in alkaline pH range. Significant co-complexation during leaching may be susceptible and responsible for the differences. Multivariate factor analysis testified that pH, Fe and Al in acidic environment tended to be clustered and highly loaded under the dominant correlation factor (accounting for 33.3–49.0% of variance). Contrastively, pH, Ca and cationic strength in alkaline environment tended to be clustered and highly loaded under the dominant correlation factor (accounting for 39.9–43.3% of variance). In both cases, co-complexation was evidenced. As the natural pHs of IBA usually fall within the high alkaline range, the comparison study offered quantitative discrimination of leaching potential between measurements and simulation, which would be crucial for decision making during IBA applications. In light of limited leaching potential of IBA under the alkaline pH range, its application with cement (with high alkalinity) seems to be one of the best options.

Abstract

We present a precise measurement of the proton longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A 1 p and the proton spin-dependent structure function g 1 p at photon virtualities 0.006 ( GeV / c ) 2 Q 2 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 in the Bjorken x range of 4 × 10 − 5 x 4 × 10 − 2 . The results are based on data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN using muon beam energies of 160 GeV and 200 GeV . The statistical precision is more than tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. In the whole range of x , the measured values of A 1 p and g 1 p are found to be positive. It is for the first time that spin effects are found at such low values of x .

19. Catalytic activities and resistance to HCl poisoning of Ni-based catalysts during steam reforming of naphthalene

Abstract

Hydrogen chloride is commonly present in syngas produced from municipal solid waste and biomass gasification. The influence of HCl on the activity of nickel-based catalysts during catalytic naphthalene reforming was investigated. Two synthesized and two commercial catalysts were tested for steam reforming at 790 °C and SV 24,000 h−1. In the absence of HCl, nickel supported on limestone (Ni/Limestone) demonstrated lower naphthalene conversion (∼80%) compared to nickel supported on alumina (Ni/Alumina) and two commercial alumina supported catalysts (∼100%). In the presence of 2000 ppmv HCl, the naphthalene conversion of Ni/Limestone rapidly decreased due to the reaction with HCl and, probably, formation of molten CaCl2 deactivating the supported Ni nanoparticles. These data demonstrate limited applicability of calcium-based nickel catalysts for naphthalene reforming at the studied temperature. The efficiencies of Ni/Alumina and two commercial catalysts were maintained at ∼100% naphthalene conversion. However, HCl concentrations of 500–2000 ppmv had detrimental effect on water-gas shift activity of alumina supported catalysts during naphthalene reforming. The spent alumina supported catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption, FESEM/EDS, XRD, XPS, TPR and TEM after the reforming in the absence and presence of HCl, and the results suggested that HCl increased nickel sintering in the catalysts causing the loss of water-gas shift activity. The losses of catalytic activity varied among the catalysts and were the lowest for Ni/Alumina, which contained nanosized porous alumina support and had the strongest Ni nanoparticle-support interactions.

Abstract

Cytostatic drugs, mainly used as chemotherapy compounds, can pose serious threats to aqueous ecosystem and human health once released into the natural environment. We investigated the use of an anaerobic osmotic membrane bioreactor (AnOMBR) for removing cytostatic drugs from wastewater. The AnOMBR utilizes a dense forward osmosis (FO) membrane in an anaerobic digester with prolonged sludge retention time (60 days). The high rejection of the FO membrane combined with the extended organic retention time in the reactor ensured high removal rates (more than 95.6%) for all the eight cytostatic drugs investigated. With regard to their removal routes in the AnOMBR, the eight cytostatic drugs can be divided into several groups. Doxorubicin, Epirubicin and Tamoxifen were nearly completely removed through the adsorption of anaerobic sludge, while Methotrexate and Cyclophosphamide were mainly removed by biodegradation and FO rejection, respectively. In addition, Mitotane, Azathioprine and Flutamide were removed by both biodegradation and adsorption. This work provides critical insights into the removal mechanisms of high-retention AnOMBRs.

Abstract

We present a new amplitude analysis of the $\eta\pi$ $D$-wave in $\pi^- p\to \eta\pi^- p$ measured by COMPASS. Employing an analytical model based on the principles of the relativistic $S$-matrix, we find two resonances that can be identified with the $a_2(1320)$ and the excited $a_2^\prime(1700)$, and perform a comprehensive analysis of their pole positions. For the mass and width of the $a_2$ we find $M=(1307 \pm 1 \pm 6)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(112 \pm 1 \pm 8)$~MeV, and for the excited state $a_2^\prime$ we obtain $M=(1720 \pm 10 \pm 60)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(280\pm 10 \pm 70)$~MeV, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Bottom ashes generated from municipal solid waste incineration have gained increasing popularity as alternative construction materials, however, they contains elevated heavy metals posing a challenge for its free usage. Different leaching methods are developed to quantify leaching potential of incineration bottom ashes meanwhile guide its environmentally friendly application. Yet, there are diverse IBA applications while the in situ environment is always complicated, challenging its legislation. In this study, leaching tests were conveyed using batch and column leaching methods with seawater as opposed to deionized water, to unveil the metal leaching potential of IBA subjected to salty environment, which is commonly encountered when using IBA in land reclamation yet not well understood. Statistical analysis for different leaching methods suggested disparate performance between seawater and deionized water primarily ascribed to ionic strength. Impacts of leachant are metal-specific dependent on leaching methods and have a function of intrinsic characteristics of incineration bottom ashes. Leaching performances were further compared on additional perspectives, e.g. leaching approach and liquid to solid ratio, indicating sophisticated leaching potentials dominated by combined geochemistry. It is necessary to develop application-oriented leaching methods with corresponding leaching criteria to preclude discriminations between different applications, e.g., terrestrial applications vs. land reclamation. Abstract

The introduction of heavy metal-free biomass into the sewage sludge (SS) pyrolysis can effectively improve the biochar properties and reduce the bioavailability and toxicity of heavy metals (HMs) in blended biochar. Herein, this study aimed to understand the biochar properties and associated environmental risks of HMs, by comparing the residual contents from the co-pyrolysis of SS with various organic fractions of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) at 550 °C and pyrolysis alone at different temperatures between 350 and 750 °C. The results indicated that, compared with SS pyrolysis alone, co-pyrolysis of SS with various OFMSW (except PVC) lead to lower biochar yields but with higher pH values (increased between 21.80% and 31.70%) and carbon contents (raised between 33.45% and 48.22%) in blended biochars, and the chemical speciation analysis suggested that co-pyrolysis further promoted the HMs transformation into more stable forms which significantly reduce the associated environmental risk of HMs in the blended biochars (the values of RI lower than 55.80). The addition of PVC, however, impeded biochar properties and compromised HMs immobilization during SS pyrolysis.

Abstract

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash has gained increasing attentions for its friendly application worldwide, due to promotion of waste recycling. One of the biggest concerns for incineration bottom ash (IBA) utilization lies in its elevated metal concentrations and leaching potential. While challenges faced by the user are miscellaneous based on several aspects—regulations and rules, the heterogeneity of IBA sources, specific risks arisen from individual applications and/or mixed public views, etc. Extensive knowledge on IBA characterization, existing treatment and application contributes to optimize life cycle of the bottom ash, herein enhancing the IBA management practices. On the understanding that both feedstock and the process for incineration are various, properties, treatments and applications of the IBA are accordingly different. Nevertheless, literature reviewed data indicate evidently that IBA, varying in its original resources and treatment facilities though, shares common geotechnical and chemical properties. As the technology development on the IBA is dominated by these common properties, through which the proper treatment and application could be well determined. In this review three perspectives were concentrated. First, general properties of IBA e.g. heavy metals and their leaching potential, bulk components, particle size distribution and pH were investigated, whereby the general trends were indicated with collective plots. Secondly, the existing status quo on IBA treatment methods and applications were investigated, suggesting a highest potential as low-strength aggregates. Thirdly, toxicity studies and LCA on IBA as emerging research topics were also investigated, to further justify its application feasibility.

Abstract

Singapore is a city-state with limited land space and resources, and most construction materials are imported from foreign countries. In this study, a detailed whole building life cycle assessment (LCA) of a base case building in Singapore as well as material LCA were conducted with customized life cycle inventory datasets by considering materials importation and transportation in particular, and by considering the effects of adopting local recycled aggregates. Results showed that importation and transportation of construction materials significantly alter environmental impacts. This highlights the necessity of considering transportation for importing materials in Singapore context. Inclusion of local recycled aggregates for concrete production to reduce potential environmental load is significant. This suggests adoption of local recycled aggregates is an important strategy for the development of sustainable construction in Singapore.

Abstract

In this study, Me-doped g-C 3 N 4 (Me = Cu, Co and Fe) catalysts with various % w/w of Me dopant are prepared by a versatile calcination protocol for catalytic redox-based advanced oxidation process. The characterization study using FESEM, EDX, TEM, XRD, TGA, XPS, FTIR and BET indicates that all the Me-doped g-C 3 N 4 consist of irregular morphology with at least 1.4–1.9 times higher surface area than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . The catalysts were used to generate SO 4 − from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for selective sulfathiazole (STZ) degradation. The results show that the catalytic activities of the Me-doped g-C 3 N 4 are in the following order: Co-doped g-C 3 N 4 (0.59% w/w Co, Co–g–4) > Fe–doped g-C 3 N 4 ≫ Cu-doped g-C 3 N 4 ∼ pristine g-C 3 N 4 . The excessive Me doping have a negative effect on catalytic performance due to the undesired SO 4 − scavenging by surface defects (–C N) and excess Me. The STZ degradation were highly influenced by the pH, catalyst loading and Oxone® dosage. The predominant reactive radical is identified to be SO 4 − which contributes to >82% of total STZ degradation. The LC/MS/MS system was used to confirm the selectivity of SO 4 − for STZ degradation. The main STZ degradation pathway is also proposed. The performance of Co–g–4/PMS system for STZ removal in the treated drinking water (TW) and secondary wastewater effluent (SE) was investigated. It is found that, despite having poorer performance compared with the DI water due to the presence of various water matrix species particularly the dissolved organic matter, the selectivity of SO 4 − for STZ in SE and TW is evidenced. Overall, the Co-g-4/PMS system shows promising performance and excellent stability for selective catalytic degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics in water.

Abstract

We investigated the removal of haloacetic acids (HAAs) from swimming pool waters (SPWs) by two nanofiltration membranes NF270 and NF90. The strong matrix effect (particularly by Ca2+) on membrane rejection prompts us to systematically investigate the mechanistic role of Ca2+ in HAA rejection. At typical SPW pH of 7.5, NF90 maintained consistently high rejection of HAAs (>95%) with little influence by Ca2+, thanks to the dominance of size exclusion effect for this tight membrane (pore radius ∼ 0.31 nm). In contrast, the rejections of both inorganic ions (e.g., Na+ and Cl−) and HAA anions were decreased at higher Ca2+ concentration for NF270 (pore radius ∼ 0.40 nm). Further tests show that the rejection of neutral hydrophilic molecular probes and the membrane pore size were not affected by Ca2+. Although Ca2+ is unable to form strong complex with HAAs, we observed the binding of Ca2+ to NF270 together with a reduction in its surface charge. Therefore, the formation of membrane-Ca2+ complex, which weakens charge interaction effect, was responsible for the reduced HAA rejection. The current study reveals important mechanistic insights of the matrix effect on trace contaminant rejection, which is critical for a better understanding of their fate and removal in membrane-based treatment. Abstract

The conversion of non-condensable pyrolysis gases from plastic feedstock into carbon nanomaterials through catalytic chemical vapor deposition was investigated. Three samples, namely low density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP) and a mixture of four plastics (MP), containing LDPE (40%), PP (40%), polystyrene (PS) (10%) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (10%), were used as raw materials in the pyrolysis process. The plastics were initially pyrolyzed at 600 °C producing condensable oils and non-condensable gases. The non-condensable gases were further heated in the second reactor either at 500 or 800 °C. Heating at 800 °C caused decomposition of the gases to intermediate products (methane, ethylene and condensable oils), which were converted over a nickel-based catalyst into multi-walled carbon nanotubes with similar yields and properties regardless of the plastic feedstock. Heating at 500 °C had no effect on the composition of non-condensable pyrolysis gases. However, the carbon materials produced over the catalyst had different yields and structures implying the influence of plastic feedstock on the properties of materials was more pronounced at lower synthesis temperature. At 500 °C, the MP non-condensable pyrolysis gases were converted into a mixture of carbon nanocages and multi-walled carbon nanotubes with higher graphitization degree compared to carbon materials from PP and LDPE, which were mainly multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the carbon yield was the highest using PP followed by LDPE and MP samples (32%, 21% and 3%, respectively). The lower carbon yield using LDPE compared to PP was attributed to the lower concentration of unsaturated hydrocarbons in the pyrolysis gas, while the low yield using MP was caused by the presence of PET in the plastic mixture, decreasing the reactivity of hydrocarbon gases over the catalyst.

Abstract

The ever-increasing consumption of various cytostatic drugs (CSDs) has attracted growing public concern in recent years. The photodegradation of 8 CSDs was investigated using a low-pressure UV-254Hg lamp, resulting in fluence-based first-order kinetic rate constants in the range of (0.20-6.97)×10-4cm2mJ-1. The influence of water matrix components, including natural dissolved organic matter (DOM), bicarbonate (HCO3-), nitrate (NO3-), chloride (Cl-), and sulfate (SO42-), was investigated. The degradation rates of CSDs decrease in the presence of DOM due to the competition for the UV light, but increase with addition of NO3- due to an indirect production of HO. Further investigation was carried out to evaluate the viability of UV treatment performances using two real water samples, namely treated water from a water treatment plant and secondary effluent from a wastewater treatment plant. The primary photodegradation byproducts of CSDs were identified using LC/MS/MS to investigate the mechanism of direct UV photolysis and indirect NO3--induced and DOM-induced photolysis. The degradation rates of CSDs increase significantly with the addition of H2O2 or S2O82- under UV irradiation, due to the generation of non-selective HO or selective SO4-. As an electrophilic radical, SO4- mainly reacts via electron transfer and selectively attacks certain electron-donating functional groups of CSDs.

Abstract

The photodegradation of cyclophosphamide (CP) and 5-fluorouracil (5FU) in water was investigated by low-pressure UV and UV/H 2 O 2 processes. The degradation effect of the two cytostatic drugs (CSDs) can be expressed using a pseudo first-order kinetic model in both UV and UV/H 2 O 2 process. Their photodegradation effect in direct UV system significantly increases with the addition of H 2 O 2 due to HO generation. At low H 2 O 2 dose, the degradation efficiency of CSDs increases with oxidant concentration; however, excess H 2 O 2 at higher dose reacts with HO and inhibits CSDs degradation. The optimal H 2 O 2 dose is 0.2 mM for both CSDs degradation based on the electrical energy analysis. The photodegradation effect of CSDs decreases in the presence of NOM, HCO 3 − or Cl − , and increases with NO 3 − . Treated water (TW) from a water treatment plant and secondary effluent (SE) from a wastewater treatment plant was employed as natural waters to evaluate the potential application of UV/H 2 O 2 . High concentration of alkalinity, NOM and Cl − in SE decreases the degradation efficiency of CSDs significantly. Transformation by-products of CSDs were detected to propose their potential degradation pathways.

Abstract

In this study, a Bi2Fe4O9 catalyst with nanoplate morphology was fabricated using a facile hydrothermal method. It was used as a catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for aqueous sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. A comprehensive performance evaluation of the Bi2Fe4O9/PMS system was conducted by investigating the effects of pH, PMS dosage, catalyst loading, SMX concentration, temperature, and halides (Cl− and Br−) on the degradation of SMX. The Bi2Fe4O9/PMS system demonstrated a remarkable catalytic activity with >95% SMX removal within 30 min (conditions: pH 3.8, [Bi2Fe4O9] = 0.1 g L−1, [SMX]:[PMS] mol ratio =1:20). It was found that both Cl− and Br− can lead to the formation of PMS–induced reactive halide species (i.e. HClO, HBrO, and Br2) which can also react with SMX forming halogenated SMX byproducts. Based on the detected degradation byproducts, the major SMX degradation pathway in the Bi2Fe4O9/PMS system is proposed. The SMX degradation by Bi2Fe4O9/PMS system in the wastewater secondary effluent (SE) was also investigated. The results showed that SMX degradation rate in the SE was relatively slower than in the deionized water due to (i) reactive radical scavenging by water matrix species found in SE (e.g.: dissolved organic matters (DOCs), etc.), and (ii) partial deactivation of the catalyst by DOCs. Nevertheless, the selectivity of the SO4•− towards SMX degradation was evidenced from the rapid SMX degradation despite the high background DOCs in the SE. At least four times the dosage of PMS is required for SMX degradation in the SE to achieve a similar SMX removal efficiency to that of the deionized water matrix.

Abstract

High precision data of lepton angular distributions in inclusive $Z$ boson production, reported by the CMS and ATLAS Collaborations, showed pronounced transverse momentum ($q_T$) dependencies of the $A_0$ and $A_2$ coefficients. Violation of the Lam-Tung relation, $A_0 = A_2$, was also found. An intuitive understanding of these results can be obtained from a geometric approach. We predict that $A_0$ and $A_2$ for $Z$ plus single gluon-jet events are very different from that of $Z$ plus single quark-jet events, allowing a new experimental tool for checking various algorithms which attempt to discriminate quark jets from gluon jets. We also predict that the Lam-Tung relation would be more severely violated for the $Z$ plus multiple-jet data than what has been observed so far for inclusive $Z$ production data. Abstract

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_{\gamma}^{\rm dir}/d\eta$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta)^\alpha$ with $\alpha{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield., Comment: 673 authors from 82 institutions, 10 pages, 4 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. The primary physics program uses the Drell–Yan process to probe antiquark distributions in the target nucleon. The spectrometer consists of a target system, two dipole magnets and four detector stations. The upstream magnet is a closed-aperture solid iron magnet which also serves as the beam dump, while the second magnet is an open aperture magnet. Each of the detector stations consists of scintillator hodoscopes and a high-resolution tracking device. The FPGA-based trigger compares the hodoscope signals to a set of pre-programmed roads to determine if the event contains oppositely-signed, high-mass muon pairs.

Abstract

In this review, we introduce various magnetic biosensors that have been developed. We first explain the advantages of magnetic biosensing and their general operating principles as well as the biolabeling technique for magnetic nanoparticles. Next, we focus on magnetoresistive biosensing technologies because magnetoresistive biosensors will be an essential development direction due to the demand for miniaturization and portable lab-on-a-chip devices. The magnetoresistive effects employed in biosensing include anisotropic magnetoresistance, giant magnetoresistance and tunneling magnetoresistance. In addition to magnetoresistive sensors, the advantages and disadvantages of some nonmagnetoresistive magnetic biosensors are discussed and compared. Finally, we introduce research on integrating magnetic biosensors into the microfluidic laboratory-on-a-chip systems and comment on future development trends.

Abstract

The lepton angular distributions of the Drell-Yan process in fixed-target experiments are investigated by NLO and NNLO perturbative QCD. We present the calculated angular parameters $\lambda$, $\mu$, $\nu$ and the degree of violation of the Lam-Tung relation, $1-\lambda-2\nu$, for the NA10, E615 and E866 experiments. Predictions for the ongoing COMPASS and SeaQuest experiments are also presented. The transverse momentum ($q_T$) distributions of $\lambda$ and $\nu$ show a clear dependence on the dimuon mass ($Q$) while those of $\mu$ have a strong rapidity ($x_F$) dependence. Furthermore, $\lambda$ and $\nu$ are found to scale with $q_T/Q$. These salient features could be qualitatively understood by a geometric approach where the lepton angular distribution parameters are expressed in terms of the polar and azimuthal angles of the "natural axis" in the dilepton rest frame., Comment: published version, two-column format, 10 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Incineration bottom ash (IBA) faces challenges for its sustainable recycling due to the absence of scenario-specific risk assessment. Environmental risk assessment was carried out via a case study incorporating key factors to dominate human exposures during IBA utilization in land reclamation. Three research components echoing respective IBA leaching, exposures, and consequences were performed under a supportive framework to elaborate these interlinked key factors and unveil the potential environmental risks. IBA leachability was firstly investigated using various laboratory standard leaching methods while conducted a large-scale field trial experiment for mutual confirmation, suggesting that maximum leached amounts may be achieved when liquid to solid (L/S) ratio increases to 10. Dilution and transportation models were both developed to discriminate the mitigation of IBA leachate between two periods i.e. during and after land reclamation, suggesting that dilution rather than transportation may dominate the environmental impact for metal exposures. Metal bioaccumulation from a typical mollusk species was performed coupling the calculated dietary safety limits based on Singaporean diet intake for development of the threshold of toxicology concerns on human exposures. With such, IBA benign usage in land reclamation was also conferred in the form of distance and dilution factor. Abstract

Although the Passivhaus design is rapidly spreading worldwide, limited studies have examined its actual performance during operation. This study used Australia's first student accommodation built to the Passivhaus standard as a case study to assess the gaps between design prediction and in situ performance. Passivhaus criteria, supplemented with the adaptive thermal comfort approach, were applied to evaluate the discrepancies between design predictions and measurements. This year-long study discovered significant gaps in three indicators, including primary energy renewable, overheating frequency, and space heating energy demand. The simulation was over-optimistic in the first two indicators but conservative in the last. The discrepancies were mainly caused by the default assumptions and inherent restrictions of the simulation platform. Improvements can be achieved by incorporating more advanced datasets for the estimation of appliance energy use, improving the feedback process from measurements to the simulation tool and developing a more integrated simulation package. The results of this study contribute toward a deeper understanding of the magnitude, causes, and solutions of performance gaps between design and operation stages for large Passivhaus projects.

Abstract

Utilizing the ultraviolet light-induced fluorescence (UV-LIF) measurement technique as embodied in the Waveband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor (WIBS-4A), we evaluated the fluorescent particle emissions associated with human shedding while walking in a chamber. The mean emission rates of supermicron (1-10 μm) fluorescent particles were in the range 6.8-7.5 million particles per person-h (~0.3 mg per person-h) across three participants, for conditions when the relative humidity was 60%-70% and no moisturizer was applied after showering. The fluorescent particles displayed a lognormal distribution with the geometric mean diameter in the range 2.5-4 μm and exhibited asymmetry factors that increased with particle size. Use of moisturizer was associated with changes in number and mass emission rates, size distribution, and particle shape. Emission rates were lower when the relative humidity was reduced, but these differences were not statistically significant.

Abstract

In a warm and humid climate, increasing the temperature set point offers considerable energy benefits with low first costs. Elevated air movement generated by a personally controlled fan can compensate for the negative effects caused by an increased temperature set point. Fifty-six tropically acclimatized persons in common Singaporean office attire (0.7 clo) were exposed for 90 minutes to each of five conditions: 23, 26, and 29°C and in the latter two cases with and without occupant-controlled air movement. Relative humidity was maintained at 60%. We tested thermal comfort, perceived air quality, sick building syndrome symptoms, and cognitive performance. We found that thermal comfort, perceived air quality, and sick building syndrome symptoms are equal or better at 26°C and 29°C than at the common set point of 23°C if a personally controlled fan is available for use. The best cognitive performance (as indicated by task speed) was obtained at 26°C; at 29°C, the availability of an occupant-controlled fan partially mitigated the negative effect of the elevated temperature. The typical Singaporean indoor air temperature set point of 23°C yielded the lowest cognitive performance. An elevated set point in air-conditioned buildings augmented with personally controlled fans might yield benefits for reduced energy use and improved indoor environmental quality in tropical climates.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the role of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger in modifying microbial indoor air quality. Specifically, depositional losses of ambient bioaerosols and particles onto dry (not cooled) and wet (cool) coil surfaces were measured for different airspeeds passing through the test coil. Total, bacterial and fungal DNA concentrations in condensate water produced by a wet coil were also quantified by means of fluorescent dsDNA-binding dye and qPCR assays. Results revealed that the deposition of bioaerosols and total particles is substantial on coil surfaces, especially when wet and cool. The average deposition fraction was 0.14 for total DNA, 0.18 for bacterial DNA and 0.22 for fungal DNA on the dry coil, increasing to 0.51 for total DNA, 0.50 for bacterial DNA and 0.68 for fungal DNA on the wet coil. Overall, as expected, deposition fractions increased with increasing particle size and increasing airspeed. Deposited DNA was removed from the cooling coil surfaces through the flow of condensing water at a rate comparable to the rate of direct deposition from air. A downward trend of bacterial and fungal DNA measured in condensate water over time provides suggestive evidence of biological growth on heat exchangers during nonoperational times of a ventilation system. This investigation provides new information about bioaerosol deposition onto a conventional fin-and-tube cooling coil, a potentially important factor influencing indoor exposure to microbial aerosols in air-conditioned buildings.

Abstract

This study investigated the removal of azathioprine (AZA), an immunosuppressant xenobiotic found in hospital effluent, using direct UV-254 nm photolysis, UV/H2O2 and UV/persulfate (UV/PS). AZA cannot be effectively degraded by direct UV photolysis, while the photodegradation efficiency of AZA significantly increases with addition of H2O2 or PS, due to the generation of HO and SO4 −, respectively. Compared with AZA removal of 10% by direct UV photolysis at UV dose of 510 mJ cm−2, UV/H2O2 and UV/PS can remove 68% and 87% of AZA, respectively, at an oxidant dose of 100 μM. The second-order rate constants of AZA with HO and SO4 − are 1.86 × 109 M−1 s−1 and 2.16 × 109 M−1 s−1, respectively. There is a proportional increase of AZA degradation efficiency with the increasing oxidant dose in the range of 10–100 μM, beyond which radical scavenging effect can negate the radical generation process. The effects of water quality, including pH, NOM and inorganic anions, were also investigated. The removal efficiency of AZA in the UV/H2O2 and UV/PS processes constantly decreases with the increasing pH. NOM significantly reduces the degradation efficiency of AZA through radical scavenging and UV absorption. The inhibition of AZA photodegradation is also affected by the presence of inorganic anions, following the order of HCO3− > Cl− > NO3− ≈ SO42−. Real water samples of treated water from a water treatment plant and secondary effluent from a wastewater treatment plant were used for the assessment of the UV treatment performances. Various AZA transformation by-products were identified to investigate the degradation mechanism of AZA in the UV-AOP systems. The addition of 100 μM oxidant significantly decreases the treatment cost from 0.844 (for UV photolysis) to 0.078 (for UV/H2O2) and 0.067 US$ m−3 order−1 (for UV/PS), respectively, indicating that UV/PS is the most cost-effective process for AZA degradation.

Abstract

Fan-coil units (FCUs) see wide applications in buildings but few are integrated with high-quality filters for efficient particle removal. Driven by an attempt to protect the indoor space served by FCUs from elevated outdoor PM concentrations (e.g. periodic haze events in Southeast Asia), four different grades of filters (dust-spot efficiencies of 25%, 65%, 85% and 95%, denoted as F 25 , F 65. F 85 , and F 95 hereafter) were installed inside the cassette FCUs respectively in four similar rooms. Air exchange was controlled by the recirculation fans in FCUs and exfiltration via door gaps. Performance of the filters was evaluated through continuous monitoring of particle number concentrations. Energy consumption and noise levels were also recorded via field measurements. The overall particle removal efficiencies (via filter-integrated FCUs) generally increased with higher filter grades; however, F 95 didn't provide a significant improvement over F 85 . Upgrading from F 25 to F 85 or F 95 decreased the size-resolved particle I/O ratios significantly (from 0.19 to 0.65 to 0.06–0.24 depending on the particle sizes). Installation of F 85 or F 95 alone was not sufficient to reduce the indoor PM 2.5 concentrations to the WHO guideline of 25 μg m −3 under moderate and heavy haze scenarios. F 85 resulted in the lowest energy consumption in terms of chilled water energy and FCU electricity combined. F 95 application led to the highest noise level at ∼46.6 dBA. The study advances the knowledge of particle attenuation effects by the FCU with different grades of filters and provides a basis for filter selection against compromised outdoor conditions in similar settings.

Abstract

Proper food waste management has been a growing concern for densely populated urban cities, like Singapore. The current practice of incineration is questionable in terms of environmental and economic sustainability. In order to alleviate the environmental impacts and improve resource recovery, alternative solutions for food waste management i.e. food waste-to-energy biodiesel and anaerobic digestion have been proposed through life cycle assessment. The functional unit of the study was set to be 1 tonne of food waste. The system boundary included the collection, processing, waste conversion and disposal of food waste with three product outputs, electrical energy, hydrochar, and glycerol. Process data were obtained from lab-scale experiments, literature, and SimaPro 7.3 libraries. The impact categories were assessed in terms of acidification potential, eutrophication potential, global warming potential for 100 years, and cumulative energy demand using the CML 2 baseline 2000 version 2.05 method and the CED version 1.08 method. A cost-benefit analysis was also performed for the studied scenarios. The life cycle assessment results show that food waste-to-energy biodiesel system is favoured for food waste with oil content > 5% and anaerobic digestion for those with oil content ≤ 5%. The cost-benefit analysis results show that anaerobic digestion is the best choice if applicable in the local environment. Otherwise, food waste-to-energy biodiesel is the preferred choice over incineration. In conclusion, this study presents the advantages of anaerobic digestion and food waste-to-energy biodiesel system in comparison with incineration of food waste. The results from this study suggest a need for adaptive strategy based on the food waste type and composition, and provide decision makers in Singapore with insights into the three food waste management strategies and directions to improve the existing system.

Abstract

High precision data of dilepton angular distributions in $\gamma^*/Z$ production were reported recently by the CMS Collaboration covering a broad range of the dilepton transverse momentum, $q_T$, up to $\sim 300$ GeV. Pronounced $q_T$ dependencies of the $\lambda$ and $\nu$ parameters, characterizing the $\cos^2\theta$ and $\cos 2\phi$ angular distributions, were found. Violation of the Lam-Tung relation was also clearly observed. We show that the $q_T$ dependence of $\lambda$ allows a determination of the relative contributions of the $q \bar q$ annihilation versus the $qG$ Compton process. The violation of the Lam-Tung relation is attributed to the presence of a non-zero component of the $q - \bar q$ axis in the direction normal to the "hadron plane" formed by the colliding hadrons. The magnitude of the violation of the Lam-Tung relation is shown to reflect the amount of this `non-coplanarity". The observed $q_T$ dependencies of $\lambda$ and $\nu$ from the CMS and the earlier CDF data can be well described using this approach., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

While mixing ventilation (MV) and displacement ventilation (DV) are widely used to regulate the indoor environment, very few studies compared occupants' responses under these two systems in the field. In this study, a field experiment was conducted in two identical tutorial rooms to compare human subjects' thermal comfort, sick building syndromes (SBS), and short-term performance under MV and passive displacement ventilation (PDV). Experimental results showed that MV could lead to significantly larger overall draft sensation than PDV due to high air velocity from the overhead diffusers. PDV on the other hand, led to significantly higher draft and colder sensation in the lower body level, while draft distribution was perceived relatively homogenous in the vertical direction in the MV room. Seat arrangement could lead to inhomogeneous sensations in the horizontal direction in both the MV and PDV rooms. Higher CO 2 concentration was the main factor causing SBS related to head, while both higher CO 2 concentration and lower relative humidity (RH) contributed to SBS related to eyes. As a consequence, SBS resulted from high CO 2 concentration and low RH could lead to decrease in short-term performance. In addition to the experiment, the results of the real-life occupants' feedback also resembled the experimental findings.

Abstract

Heavy metals and some metalloids are the most significant inorganic contaminants specified in toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) in determining the safety of landfills or further utilization. As a consequence, a great deal of efforts had been made on the development of miniaturized analytical devices, such as Microchip Electrophoresis (ME) and μTAS for on-site testing of heavy metals and metalloids to prevent spreading of those pollutants or decrease the reutilization period of waste materials such as incineration bottom ash. However, the bottleneck lied in the long and tedious conventional TCLP that requires 18 h of leaching. Without accelerating the TCLP process, the on-site testing of the waste material leachates was impossible. In this study, therefore, a new accelerated leaching method (ALM) combining ultrasonic assisted leaching with tumbling was developed to reduce the total leaching time from 18 h to 30 min. After leaching, the concentrations of heavy metals and metalloids were determined with ICP-MS or ICP-optical emission spectroscopy. No statistical significance between ALM and TCLP was observed for most heavy metals (i.e., cobalt, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, silver, strontium, and tin) and metalloids (i.e., arsenic and selenium). For the heavy metals with statistical significance, correlation factors derived between ALM and TCLP were 0.56, 0.20, 0.037, and 0.019 for barium, cadmium, chromium, and lead, respectively. Combined with appropriate analytical techniques (e.g., ME), the ALM can be applied to rapidly prepare the incineration bottom ash samples as well as other environmental samples for on-site determination of heavy metals and metalloids.

Abstract

Osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR) is an emerging technology integrating a forward osmosis (FO) process into a membrane bioreactor (MBR). This technology has been gaining increasing popularity in wastewater treatment and reclamation due to its excellent product water quality, low fouling tendency and high fouling reversibility over conventional MBRs. In the past decade especially the last 3 years, novel insights and significant advancements have been achieved in many aspects of OMBR accompanied with greatly increased number of published papers. This paper attempts to critically review the recent developments in OMBRs and to present a clear outline for further studies. Firstly, OMBR fundamentals including its configuration and FO process are presented. Subsequently, performance of OMBRs is summarized and compared to conventional MBRs. Additionally, mechanisms, impacts and mitigations of salt accumulation and membrane fouling related to the core challenge of low water flux in OMBRs are addressed. Finally, future research prospects are discussed in order to further improve OMBR technology and drive it from laboratory research to real practical applications.
