Designing proper frontend electronics is critical in the development of highly sophisticated electrode systems. Multielectrode arrays for measuring electrical signals or impedance require multichannel readout systems. Even more challenging is the differential or ratiometric configuration with simultaneous assessment of measurement and reference channels. In this work, an eight-channel frontend was developed for contacting a 2×8 electrode array (8 measurement and 8 reference electrodes) with a large common electrode to the impedance gain-phase analyzer Solartron 1260 (S-1260). Using the three independent and truly parallel monitor channels of the S-1260, impedance of trapped cells and reference material was measured at the same time, thereby considerably increasing the performance of the device. The frontend electronics buffers the generator output and applies a potentiostatic signal to the common electrode of the chip. The applied voltage is monitored using the current monitor of the S-1260 via voltage/current conversion. The frontend monitors the current through the electrodes and converts it to a voltage fed into the voltage monitors of the S-1260. For assessment of the 8 electrode pairs featured by the chip, a relay-based multiplexer was implemented. Extensive characterization and calibration of the frontend were carried out in a frequency range between 100 Hz and 1 MHz. Investigating the influence of the multiplexer and the frontend electronics, direct measurement with and without frontend was compared. Although differences were evident, they have been negligible below one per cent. The significance of measurement using the complex S-1260-frontend-electrode was tested using Kohlrausch's law. The impedance of an electrolytic dilution series was measured and compared to the theoretical values. The coincidence of measured values and theoretical prediction serves as an indicator for electrode sensitivity to cell behavior. Monitoring of cell behavior on the microelectrode surface will be shown as an example.

Microsphere biolasers have attracted a great deal of interest due to their potential for biosensing and cell tracking. Here we demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, microfluidic-based fabrication of nearly monodisperse dye-doped protein microsphere biolasers with a tunable size from 150 to 50 µm. In particular, for an 85 µm-bead, about 70% of the fabricated microspheres have the same size of 85 µm. Under optical pumping, the fabricated microspheres emit whispering gallery mode lasing emission with a lasing threshold of 7 µ J m m − 2 and quality ( Q ) factor up to 3000. Interestingly, microspheres with the same size exhibit a similar lasing threshold and spectrum. The result indicates a high reproducibility of microsphere biolasers by the microfluidic-based fabrication technique. This Letter provides an effective method for mass production of high- Q factor microsphere biolasers which is a significant step toward real biosensing and medical applications.

A colorimetric paper-based sensor is proposed for the rapid monitoring of six major organophosphate and carbamate pesticides. The assay was constructed by dropping gold and silver nanoparticles on the hydrophilic zones of a paper substrate. The nanoparticles were modified by L-arginine, quercetin, and polyglutamic acid. The mechanism of sensing is based on the interaction between the pesticide and the nanoparticles. The color of nanoparticles changed during the interactions. A digital camera recorded these changes. The assay provided a unique response for each studied pesticide. This method can determine six individual pesticides including carbaryl, paraoxon, parathion, malathion, diazinon, and chlorpyrifos. The limit of detection for these pesticides were 29.0, 22.0, 32.0, 17.0, 45.0, and 36.0 ng mL−1, respectively. The assay was applied to simultaneously determine the six studied pesticides in a mixture using the partial least square method (PLS). The root mean square errors of prediction were 11, 8.7, 9.2, 10, 12, and 11 for carbaryl, paraoxon, parathion, malathion, diazinon, and chlorpyrifos, respectively. The paper-based device can differentiate two types of studied pesticide (organophosphate and carbamate) as well as two types of organophosphate structures (oxon and thion). Furthermore, this sensor showed high selectivity to the pesticides in the presence of other potential species (e.g., metal ions, anions, amino acids, sugar, and vitamins). This study introduces an applicable colorimetric sensor array for the detection of pesticides in the vapor phase. The array consisted of six metal nanoparticles spotted on the piece of filter paper. 3D-origami pattern was used for the fabrication of a paper-based sensor to decrease the effect of the nanoparticles leaching after exposure to analytes. Exposure to pesticide aerosols caused changes in the color of the array due to the aggregation of nanoparticles. These changes provided selective responses to thion pesticides such as malathion, parathion, chlorpyrifos, and diazinon. The sensing assay could also differentiate between aliphatic and aromatic thions and discriminate amine-containing compounds from the other studied analytes. These finding results are clearly confirmed by both visual detection and multivariate statistical methods. The proposed sensor was successfully developed for the quantitative measurement of pesticide aerosols at a very low concentration. The limit of detection of this method determined for malathion, parathion, chlorpyrifos and diazinon were 58.0, 103.0, 81.0 and 117.0, respectively. Moreover, the array could be employed to simultaneously analyze four studied pesticides. The statistcal results confirmed that the method has high performance for concurrent detection of thions as a major air pollutant without the interference of other species.

This work presents an effective strategy for the well-oriented immobilization of antibodies in which boronic acid is directly attached to the surface and with no need of the long and flexible spacer. A magnetic graphene nanoribbon-boronic-acid-based immunosensor was developed and tested for the impedimetric detection of lymphoma cancer cells, a blood cancer biomarker. Magnetic graphene nanoribbons (MGNRs) were modified with boronic acid (BA) to create a supporting matrix that is utilized by immobilizing anti-CD20 antibodies with good orientation. The prepared biosensing layer (MGNR/BA/Ab) with well-oriented antibodies was premixed into whole blood samples to interact with lymphoma cancer cell receptors. In the presence of target cell receptors, an immunocomplex was formed between anti-CD20 antibodies and lymphoma cancer cell receptors. Then, the biosensing layer was magnetically collected on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) and placed in a homemade electrochemical cell configuration to measure impedimetric signals. The fabrication steps of the immunosensor were characterized by various techniques, such as resonance light scattering, fluorescence, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The assay is highly sensitive: the calculated limit of detection of lymphoma cancer cells was as low as 38 cells/mL, and the detection was linear from 100 to 1 000 000 cells/mL. The specificity of the immunosensor is also very high, and there is no interference effect with several potential interferents, such as the breast cancer (MCF-7), human embryonic kidney (HEK293), and leukemia (HL-60 and KCL-22) cell lines. The performance of the immunosensor for lymphoma cancer cells in clinical blood samples is consistent with that of commercial flow cytometric assays.

In this paper, we study the effect of aging of SIC MOSFETs on Short Circuit Safe Operating Area and Reverse Bias Safe Operating Area of SiC MOSFETs. SCSOA and RBSOA are determined using short circuit and unclamped inductive switching tests, respectively. Aging of SiC MOSFETs are performed with repetitive short circuit tests at low dissipated energies, which allows to validate the relevance of evolution of different aging indicators measured during the aging process. The decrease in the dissipated energy leading to failure in short circuit and unclamped inductive switching tests allows to clearly link the evolution of these Safe Operating Areas to the degradation of electrical performances (drain and gate leakage currents and on-state resistance). Obtained results show that a strong increase in the drain and/or gate leakage currents after aging has a great effect on the decrease of Safe Operating Area especially on RBSOA and that on-state resistance increase due to aging process represents less impacts in the evolution of RBSOA than in the case of SCSOA. It is also clear from the obtained results that without any apparent evolution of these leakage currents, the decrease of SCSOA after aging is related to the increase in the on-state resistance.

Bioactive glass-ceramics (BGCs) with the composition of 60SiO2-30CaO-10P2O5 (wt. %) have been synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The BGC samples were prepared at two reaction temperatures of 150 and 220°C, named BGC-150 and BGC-220. The XRD and FTIR analyses highlighted that the degree of crystallinity of BGCs increased linearly with hydrothermal reaction temperature. FE-SEM and TEM results indicated that the surface of BGC samples is covered by the nanosized particles which grow into larger sizes as a function of reaction temperature. The bioactivity of BGCs was investigated by the immersion of powder samples in the SBF solution. The results confirmed the dissolution and the interaction of BGC samples in the SBF solution which led to the formation of a new apatite phase on their surface.

In the last three decades, Electrical Cell-substrate Impedance Sensing (ECIS) has emerged as a powerful technique for in vitro cellular research and preclinical testing. In this study, a cell-based impedance biosensor based on ECIS technique, which integrates microelectrode arrays with a small culture chamber has been developed for monitoring the attachment, spreading and drug-induced apoptosis of very few MCF-7 breast cancer cells. It was found out that cell spreading caused a significant increase of impedance magnitude in the frequency range between 10 kHz and 100 kHz and also pronounced phase shift. Using an electrical equivalent circuit to model the measured spectra, the morphological change of cells was analyzed. Cell spreading induced a slight decrease of membrane capacitance of 2% and a prominent increase of membrane resistance of 57% within incubating for nearly one day. For pharmaceutical assessment, the cells were treated with different concentrations of an anti-cancer drug (Cisplatin) in the range from 10 μM to 50 μM. We observed a fast decrease of impedance magnitude within the initial 4 h of treatment with concentrations of 25 μM and 50 μM. The results derived from this study demonstrated the usability of cell-based impedance microbiosensors in cell biology and cancer research.

This paper deals with conducting interpenetrating polymers networks (C-IPN). This class of polymers enables us to actuate and sense with the same material. It is of great interest when system integration or limited workspace are an issue. The C-IPNs allow for large displacements under low voltages (typically up to 5 V) with a reversible process. In this work, we are mainly interested in the modeling of the polymer because of its particular behavior. Experimental results are provided to better understand the behavior of the C-IPN. Based on these results, analytical functions are derived in order to predict both sensor and actuator voltage outputs with a good correlation regarding experimental data. These functions are required to use and control the C-IPNs for future applications.

International audience; This work deals with a Conducting-Interpenetrating Polymer Network (C-IPN). The C-IPN exhibits very interesting and promising properties which can make it suitable for applications in robotics as a tool to perform tasks in the fields of manipulation, grasping or force measurement. It is known in the literature that such C-IPN may be actuated and bended to interact with other objects. Some of them can also be used as sensors to characterize the interaction. In this paper, we show that actuation and sensing can be performed at the same time. Moreover, we propose analytical models which can be useful for future work to process the C-IPN output and to control them. All results are verified with experimental data.

Bond wire liftoff and metallization reconstruction are two of the most frequent failures observed during power semiconductor module operation. Aging of the top-level power dies, which occurs due to power cycling, results in the redistribution of the current in the metallization layer and the elementary cells of the power dies (MOSFET-Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor, or IGBT-Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor), leading to a risk of critical failure when either the local current density or the local temperature reaches a critical value. This paper reports on the experimental estimation of the distribution of dc flowing in the power dies and investigates the effect of the local degradation of aluminum sheet resistance and bond wire liftoff on the current distribution. The local distribution of the current flowing in the metallization layer and in the power dies was estimated by mapping the electric potential of the source metallization. The obtained results facilitate the identification of failure risks that result from the aging process (which occurs due to current redistribution) of top-level power dies and provide an understanding of the physical origins of failures.

The relevance of the eddy current sensing technique to monitor the ageing state of electronic power modules has been experimentally studied. To do so, a commercial eddy current sensor was implemented for the evaluation of COOLMOSTM transistor chips soldered on a direct copper bonded ceramic substrate of a power module. The measurement data obtained over a large frequency bandwidth were analysed in the normalised complex impedance plane. The analysis shows that the sensor enables the chip and the substrate to be separately sensed. Furthermore, the ageing state of artificially aged chips can be clearly monitored. These preliminary results allow the design of eddy current micro-sensors dedicated to power module in-service monitoring purposes to be envisaged.

International audience; The ageing of the metallization layers of power semiconductor dies may be the cause of failure of power semiconductor modules. Usual indicators of failure like on-state voltage drops make it difficult to highlight the deterioration of the metallization layer. In this study, we evaluate the relevance of the characterization of power device metallizations by means of the eddy current sensors. The paper reports on the estimation of the distribution of currents flowing in a metalized part, starting from two- dimensional maps of the magnetic field induced above the part, with the monitoring of power semiconductor dies in view. The estimation is obtained from the measured data by inverting a mesh-free modeling of the induced magnetic field. First inversion results of experimental data are presented and discussed.
