The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) provides long baseline (${\sim}4$ yrs) light curves for sources brighter than V$\lesssim17$ mag across the whole sky. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has started to produce high-quality light curves with a baseline of at least 27 days, eventually for most of the sky. The combination of ASAS-SN and TESS light curves probes both long and short term variability in great detail, especially towards the TESS continuous viewing zones (CVZ) at the ecliptic poles. We have produced ${\sim}1.3$ million V-band light curves covering a total of ${\sim}1000 \, \rm deg^2$ towards the southern TESS CVZ and have systematically searched these sources for variability. We have identified ${\sim} 11,700$ variables, including ${\sim} 7,000$ new discoveries. The light curves and characteristics of the variables are all available through the ASAS-SN variable stars database (https://asas-sn.osu.edu/variables). We also introduce an online resource to obtain pre-computed ASAS-SN V-band light curves (https://asas-sn.osu.edu/photometry) starting with the light curves of the ${\sim}1.3$ million sources studied in this work. Asymmetric hybrid supercapacitors (AHSCs) combine high specific energy and power by merging two electrodes with capacitive and Faradaic charge storage mechanisms. In this study, we introduce AHSC cells that use lithium titanate and activated carbon electrodes in an alkali-ion containing ionic liquid electrolyte. With this cell concept, it is possible to operate the activated carbon electrode in a higher potential window. Consequently, higher cell voltages and a reduced carbon electrode mass can be used, resulting in significantly increased energy compared to aqueous or organic electrolytes. We demonstrate the feasibility of this cell concept for both lithium- and sodium-ion intercalation, underlining the general validity of our approach. Our prototype cells already reach high specific energies of 100 W h/kg, while maintaining a specific power of up to 2 kW/kg and cycling stability of over 1500 cycles. Owing to the IL electrolyte, stable cycling of an AHSC at 80 °C is demonstrated for the first time.

Aptamers, synthetic single-strand oligonucleotides that are similar in function to antibodies, are promising as therapeutics because of their minimal side effects. However, the stability and bioavailability of the aptamers pose a challenge. We developed aptamers converted from RNA aptamer to modified DNA aptamers that target phospho-AXL with improved stability and bioavailability. On the basis of the comparative analysis of a library of 17 converted modified DNA aptamers, we selected aptamer candidates, GLB-G25 and GLB-A04, that exhibited the highest bioavailability, stability, and robust antitumor effect in in vitro experiments. Backbone modifications such as thiophosphate or dithiophosphate and a covalent modification of the 5'-end of the aptamer with polyethylene glycol optimized the pharmacokinetic properties, improved the stability of the aptamers in vivo by reducing nuclease hydrolysis and renal clearance, and achieved high and sustained inhibition of AXL at a very low dose. Treatment with these modified aptamers in ovarian cancer orthotopic mouse models significantly reduced tumor growth and the number of metastases. This effective silencing of the phospho-AXL target thus demonstrated that aptamer specificity and bioavailability can be improved by the chemical modification of existing aptamers for phospho-AXL. These results lay the foundation for the translation of these aptamer candidates and companion biomarkers to the clinic.

We report velocity-delay maps for prominent broad emission lines, Ly_alpha, CIV, HeII and H_beta, in the spectrum of NGC5548. The emission-line responses inhabit the interior of a virial envelope. The velocity-delay maps reveal stratified ionization structure. The HeII response inside 5-10 light-days has a broad single-peaked velocity profile. The Ly_alpha, CIV, and H_beta responses peak inside 10 light-days, extend outside 20 light-days, and exhibit a velocity profile with two peaks separated by 5000 km/s in the 10 to 20 light-day delay range. The velocity-delay maps show that the M-shaped lag vs velocity structure found in previous cross-correlation analysis is the signature of a Keplerian disk with a well-defined outer edge at R=20 light-days. The outer wings of the M arise from the virial envelope, and the U-shaped interior of the M is the lower half of an ellipse in the velocity-delay plane. The far-side response is weaker than that from the near side, so that we see clearly the lower half, but only faintly the upper half, of the velocity--delay ellipse. The delay tau=(R/c)(1-sin(i))=5 light-days at line center is from the near edge of the inclined ring, giving the inclination i=45 deg. A black hole mass of M=7x10^7 Msun is consistent with the velocity-delay structure. A barber-pole pattern with stripes moving from red to blue across the CIV and possibly Ly_alpha line profiles suggests the presence of azimuthal structure rotating around the far side of the broad-line region and may be the signature of precession or orbital motion of structures in the inner disk. Further HST observations of NGC 5548 over a multi-year timespan but with a cadence of perhaps 10 days rather than 1 day could help to clarify the nature of this new AGN phenomenon., 19 pages, 9 figures, ApJ in press

We present Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral-field spectroscopy of ESO 253-G003, which hosts a known active galactic nucleus (AGN) and the periodic nuclear transient ASASSN-14ko, observed as part of the All-weather MUse Supernova Integral-field of Nearby Galaxies survey. The MUSE observations reveal that the inner region hosts two AGN separated by 1.4±0.1 kpc (≍1 ′′. 7). The brighter nucleus has asymmetric broad permitted emission-line profiles and is associated with the archival AGN designation. The fainter nucleus does not have a broad emission-line component but exhibits other AGN characteristics, including vFWHM≈700 km~s−1 forbidden line emission, log10([OIII]/Hβ)≈1.1 , and high-excitation potential emission lines, such as [Fe VII] λ6086 and He II λ4686. The host galaxy exhibits a disturbed morphology with large kpc-scale tidal features, potential outflows from both nuclei, and a likely superbubble. A circular relativistic disc model cannot reproduce the asymmetric broad emission-line profiles in the brighter nucleus, but two non-axisymmetric disc models provide good fits to the broad emission-line profiles: an elliptical disc model and a circular disc + spiral arm model. We present observations of ASASSN-19dj, a nearby tidal disruption event (TDE) discovered in the post-starburst galaxy KUG 0810+227 by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) at a distance of d $\simeq98$ Mpc. We observed ASASSN-19dj from $-$21 to 392 d relative to peak ultraviolet (UV)/optical emission using high-cadence, multiwavelength spectroscopy and photometry. From the ASAS-SN $g$-band data, we determine that the TDE began to brighten on 2019 February 6.8 and for the first 16 d the rise was consistent with a flux $\propto t^2$ power-law. ASASSN-19dj peaked in the UV/optical on 2019 March 6.5 (MJD = 58548.5) at a bolometric luminosity of $L = (6.2 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{44} \text{ erg s}^{-1}$. Initially remaining roughly constant in X-rays and slowly fading in the UV/optical, the X-ray flux increased by over an order of magnitude $\sim$225 d after peak, resulting from the expansion of the X-ray emitting region. The late-time X-ray emission is well fitted by a blackbody with an effective radius of $\sim1 \times 10^{12} \text{ cm}$ and a temperature of $\sim6 \times 10^{5} \text{ K}$. The X-ray hardness ratio becomes softer after brightening and then returns to a harder state as the X-rays fade. Analysis of Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey images reveals a nuclear outburst roughly 14.5 yr earlier with a smooth decline and a luminosity of $L_V\geq1.4 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, although the nature of the flare is unknown. ASASSN-19dj occurred in the most extreme post-starburst galaxy yet to host a TDE, with Lick H$\delta_{A}$ = $7.67\pm0.17$ \AA., Comment: Updated to match accepted MNRAS version

In November 2020, the Swift team announced an update to the UltraViolet and Optical Telescope calibration to correct for the loss of sensitivity over time. This correction affects observations in the three near ultraviolet (UV) filters, by up to 0.3 mag in some cases. As UV photometry is critical to characterizing tidal disruption events (TDEs) and other peculiar nuclear outbursts, we re-computed published Swift data for TDEs and other singular nuclear outbursts with Swift photometry in 2015 or later, as a service to the community. Using archival UV, optical, and infrared photometry we ran host SED fits for each host galaxy. From these, we computed synthetic host magnitudes and host-galaxy properties. We calculated host-subtracted magnitudes for each transient and computed blackbody fits. In addition to the nuclear outbursts, we include the ambiguous transient ATLAS18qqn (AT2018cow), which has been classifed as a potential TDE on an intermediate mass black hole. Finally, with updated bolometric light curves, we recover the relationship of \citet{hinkle20a}, where more luminous TDEs decay more slowly than less luminous TDEs, with decreased scatter as compared to the original relationship., 15 pages, 3 figures, and 7 tables. We compare the luminosity, radius, and temperature evolution of the UV/optical blackbodies for 21 well-observed tidal disruption events (TDEs), 8 of which were discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae. We find that the blackbody radii generally increase prior to peak and slowly decline at late times. The blackbody temperature evolution is generally flat, with a few objects showing small-scale variations. The bolometric UV/optical luminosities generally evolve smoothly and flatten out at late times. Finally, we find an apparent correlation between the peak luminosity and the decline rate of TDEs. This relationship is strongest when comparing the peak luminosity to its decline over 40 days. A linear fit yields $\log_{10}( L_{peak}) = (44.1^{+0.1}_{-0.1}) + (1.6^{+0.4}_{-0.2})(\Delta L_{40} + 0.5)$ in cgs, where $\Delta L_{40} = \log_{10}(L_{40} / L_{peak})$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Evolved stars near the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) show solar-like oscillations with periods spanning hours to months and amplitudes ranging from $\sim$1 mmag to $\sim$100 mmag. The systematic detection of the resulting photometric variations with ground-based telescopes would enable the application of asteroseismology to a much larger and more distant sample of stars than is currently accessible with space-based telescopes such as \textit{Kepler} or the ongoing Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) mission. We present an asteroseismic analysis of 493 M giants using data from two ground-based surveys: the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) and the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). By comparing the extracted frequencies with constraints from \textit{Kepler}, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), and Gaia we demonstrate that ground-based transient surveys allow accurate distance measurements to oscillating M giants with a precision of $\sim$15$\%$. Using stellar population synthesis models we predict that ATLAS and ASAS-SN can provide asteroseismic distances to $\sim$2$\times$10$^{6}$ galactic M giants out to typical distances of $20-50 \; \rm{kpc}$, vastly improving the reach of Gaia and providing critical constraints for Galactic archaeology and galactic dynamics., 13 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

arXiv:1905.02205v2, et al., We report observations of the hydrogen-deficient supernova (SN) 2019bkc/ATLAS19dqr. With B- and r-band decline between peak and 10 days post peak of ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{10}(B)=5.24\pm 0.07$ mag and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{10}(r)=3.85\pm 0.10$ mag, respectively, SN 2019bkc is the most rapidly declining SN I discovered so far. While its closest matches are the rapidly declining SN 2005ek and SN 2010X, the light curves and spectra of SN 2019bkc show some unprecedented characteristics. SN 2019bkc appears "hostless," with no identifiable host galaxy near its location, although it may be associated with the galaxy cluster MKW1 at z = 0.02. We present nearly 500 days of observations of the tidal disruption event ASASSN-18pg, spanning from 54 days before peak light to 441 days after peak light. Our dataset includes X-ray, UV, and optical photometry, optical spectroscopy, radio observations, and the first published spectropolarimetric observations of a TDE. ASASSN-18pg was discovered on 2018 July 11 by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) at a distance of $d=78.6$ Mpc, and with a peak UV magnitude of $m\simeq14$ it is both one of the nearest and brightest TDEs discovered to-date. The photometric data allow us to track both the rise to peak and the long-term evolution of the TDE. ASASSN-18pg peaked at a luminosity of $L\simeq2.2\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and its late-time evolution is shallower than a flux $\propto t^{-5/3}$ power-law model, similar to what has been seen in other TDEs. ASASSN-18pg exhibited Balmer lines and spectroscopic features consistent with Bowen fluorescence prior to peak which remained detectable for roughly 225 days after peak. Analysis of the two-component H$\alpha$ profile indicates that, if they are the result of reprocessing of emission from the accretion disk, the different spectroscopic lines may be coming from regions between $\sim10$ and $\sim60$ light-days from the black hole. No X-ray emission is detected from the TDE and there is no evidence of a jet or strong outflow detected in the radio. Our spectropolarimetric observations give no strong evidence for significant asphericity in the emission region, with the emission region having an axis ratio of at least $\sim0.65$., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. Conductive, boron doped diamond BDD is an extraordinary material with many applications in electrochemistry due to its wide potential window, outstanding robustness, low capacitance and resistance to fouling. However, in photoelectrochemistry, BDD usually requires UV light for excitation, which impedes e. amp; 8201;g., usage in CO2 to fuel reduction. In this work, a heavily boron doped, nanostructured diamond electrode with enhanced light absorption has been developed. It is manufactured from BDD by reactive ion etching and presents a coral amp; 8208;like structure with pore diameters in the nanometer range, ensuring a huge surface area. The strong light absorbance of this material is clearly visible from its black color. Consequently, the material is called Diamond Black DB . Electrochemical and X amp; 8208;ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements performed at near amp; 8208;ambient pressure conditions of water vapor demonstrate increased surface reactivity for the hydrogen amp; 8208;terminated DB compared to oxidized surfaces. Depending on the surface termination, the wettability and hence the electrochemically accessible area can be changed. Photoelectrochemical conversion of CO2 was demonstrated using a Cu2O amp; 8208;modified electrode in ionic liquids under solar illumination. High formic acid production rates at low catalyst deposition times can be obtained paired with an increased catalyst stability on the DB surface

(2009, PASJ, 61, S395), we collected times of superhump maxima for 102 SU UMa-type dwarf novae observed mainly during the 2017 season, and characterized these objects. WZ Sge-type stars identified in this study are PT And, ASASSN-17ei, ASASSN-17el, ASASSN-17es, ASASSN-17fn, ASASSN-17fz, ASASSN-17hw, ASASSN-17kd, ASASSN-17la, PNV J20205397 + 2508145, and TCP J00332502 − 3518565. We obtained new mass ratios for seven objects using growing superhumps (stage A). ASASSN-17gf is an EI Psc-type object below the period minimum. CRTS J080941.3 + 171528 and DDE 51 are objects in the period gap, and both showed a long-lasting phase of stage A superhumps. We present the discovery that ASASSN-14ko is a periodically flaring AGN at the center of the galaxy ESO 253-G003. At the time of its discovery by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), it was classified as a supernova close to the nucleus. The subsequent six years of V- and g-band ASAS-SN observations reveal that ASASSN-14ko has nuclear flares occurring at regular intervals. The seventeen observed outbursts show evidence of a decreasing period over time, with a mean period of $P_0 = 114.2 \pm 0.4$ days and a period derivative of $\dot{P} = -0.0017\pm0.0003$. The most recent outburst in May 2020, which took place as predicted, exhibited spectroscopic changes during the rise and a had a UV bright, blackbody spectral energy distribution similar to tidal disruption events (TDEs). The X-ray flux decreased by a factor of 4 at the beginning of the outburst and then returned to its quiescent flux after ~8 days. TESS observed an outburst during Sectors 4-6, revealing a rise time of $5.60 \pm 0.05$ days in the optical and a decline that is best fit with an exponential model. We discuss several possible scenarios to explain ASASSN-14ko's periodic outbursts, but currently favor a repeated partial TDE. The next outbursts should peak in the optical on UT 2020-09-7.4$ \pm $1.1 and UT 2020-12-26.5$ \pm $1.4., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables. Will be submitted to ApJ. We present the multi-wavelength analysis of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT~2018hyz (ASASSN-18zj). From follow-up optical spectroscopy, we detect the first unambiguous case of resolved double-peaked Balmer emission in a TDE. The distinct line profile can be well-modelled by a low eccentricity ($e\approx0.1$) accretion disk extending out to $\sim$100 $R_{p}$ and a Gaussian component originating from non-disk clouds, though a bipolar outflow origin cannot be completely ruled out. Our analysis indicates that in AT~2018hyz, disk formation took place promptly after the most-bound debris returned to pericenter, which we estimate to be roughly tens of days before the first detection. Redistribution of angular momentum and mass transport, possibly through shocks, must occur on the observed timescale of about a month to create the large \Ha-emitting disk that comprises $\lesssim$5\% of the initial stellar mass. With these new insights from AT~2018hyz, we infer that circularization is efficient in at least some, if not all optically-bright, X-ray faint TDEs. In these efficiently circularized TDEs, the detection of double-peaked emission depends on the disk inclination angle and the relative strength of the disk contribution to the non-disk component, possibly explaining the diversity seen in the current sample., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables. The potential of nondestructive prediction of egg freshness based on near-infrared (NIR) spectra fingerprints would be beneficial to quality control officers and consumers alike. In this study, handheld NIR spectrometer in the range of 740 nm to 1070 nm and chemometrics were used to simultaneously determine egg freshness based on marked date of lay for eggs stored under cold and ambient conditions. The spectra acquired from the eggs were preprocessed using multiplicative scatter correction and principal component analysis (MSC-PCA). Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was used to build identification model to predict the category of freshness, while partial least square regression (PLS-R) was used to determine the marked date of lay. The performance of LDA model was above 95% identification rate in both calibration and prediction set for the eggs stored under ambient and cold storage. For eggs stored in ambient storage, LDA had 95.54% identification rate at 5 principal components, while at cold storage LDA has 100% identification rate at 5 principal components for determining the marked date of lay, and partial least square regression (PLS-R) gave R = 0.87 and RMSEI = 2.57 for ambient storage and R = 0.88 and RMSEI = 2.66 for cold storage in independent set, respectively. The results show that handheld spectrometer and multivariate analysis could be used for rapid and nondestructive measurement of egg freshness. This provides a novel solution for egg integrity prediction along the value chain.

We characterize an all-sky catalog of ${\sim} 8,400$ $\delta$ Scuti variables in ASAS-SN, which includes ${\sim} 3,300$ new discoveries. Using distances from \textit{Gaia} DR2, we derive period-luminosity relationships (PLRs) for both the fundamental mode and overtone pulsators in the $W_{JK}$, $V$, Gaia DR2 $G$, $J$, $H$, $K_s$ and $W_1$ bands. We find that the overtone pulsators have a dominant overtone mode, with many sources pulsating in the second overtone or higher order modes. The fundamental mode pulsators have metallicity dependent periods, with $\log_{10} (\rm P){\sim}-1.1$ for $\rm [Fe/H]0$ which leads to a period-dependant scale height. Stars with $\rm P>0.100\,d$ are predominantly located close to the Galactic disk ($\rm |Z|9\, kpc$ to $\log_{10} (\rm P){\sim}-0.85$ for sources with $\rm R, Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

van den Heuvel & Tauris argue that if the red giant star in the system 2MASS J05215658+4359220 has a mass of 1 solar mass (M$_\odot$), then its unseen companion could be a binary composed of two 0.9 M$_\odot$ stars, making a triple system. We contend that the existing data are most consistent with a giant of mass $3.2^{+1.0}_{-1.0}$ M$_\odot$, implying a black hole companion of $3.3^{+2.8}_{-0.7}$ M$_\odot$., 5 pages

Stars with unusual properties can provide a wealth of information about rare stages of stellar evolution and exotic physics. However, determining the true nature of peculiar stars is often difficult. In this work, we conduct a systematic search for cool and luminous stars in the Magellanic Clouds with extreme variability, motivated by the properties of the unusual SMC star and Thorne-\.Zytkow Object (T\.ZO) candidate HV2112. Using light curves from ASAS-SN we identify 38 stars with surface temperatures T $$ 4.3, variability periods $>$ 400 days, and variability amplitudes $\Delta$V $>$ 2.5 mag. Eleven of these stars possess the distinctive double-peaked light curve morphology of HV2112. We use the pulsation properties and derived occurrence rates for these 12 objects to constrain their nature. From comparisons to stellar populations and models, we find that one star may be a red supergiant with large amplitude pulsations. For the other 11 stars we derive current masses of $\sim$5-10 M$_{\odot}$, below the theoretical minimum mass of $\sim$15 M$_{\odot}$ for T\.ZOs to be stable, casting doubt on this interpretation. Instead, we find that the temperatures, luminosities, mass-loss rates, and periods of these stars are consistent with predictions for super-Asymptotic Giant Branch (s-AGB) stars that have begun carbon burning but have not reached the superwind phase. We infer lifetimes in this phase of $\sim($1$-$7) $\times$ 10$^{4}$ years, also consistent with an s-AGB interpretation. If confirmed, these objects would represent the first identified population of s-AGB stars, illuminating the transition between low- and high-mass stellar evolution., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables, plus Appendix. Natural biopolymers, such as DNA and proteins, have uniform microstructures with defined molecular weight, precise monomer sequence, and stereoregularity along the polymer main chain that affords them unique biological functions. To reproduce such structurally perfect polymers and understand the mechanism of specific functions through chemical approaches, researchers have proposed using synthetic polymers as an alternative due to their broad chemical diversity and relatively simple manipulation. Herein, we report a new methodology to prepare sequence-controlled and stereospecific oligomers using alternating radical chain growth and sequential photoinduced RAFT single unit monomer insertion (photo-RAFT SUMI). Two families of cyclic monomers, the indenes and the N-substituted maleimides, can be alternatively inserted into RAFT agents, one unit at a time, allowing the monomer sequence to be controlled through sequential and alternating monomer addition. Importantly, the stereochemistry of cyclic monomer insertion into the RAFT agents is found to be trans-selective along the main chains due to steric hindrance from the repeating monomer units. All investigated cyclic monomers provide such trans-selectivity, but analogous acyclic monomers give a mixed cis- and trans-insertion.

We analyzed the light curves of 1376 early-to-late, nearby M dwarfs to search for white-light flares using photometry from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). We identified 480 M dwarfs with at least one potential flare employing a simple statistical algorithm that searches for sudden increases in $V$-band flux. The absolute vapor pressures for the series of [Cnmim][BF4] ionic liquids with (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) were measured over the temperature range 404–457 K by using the quartz-crystal microbalance. An absence of possible thermal decomposition was monitored by the ATR-IR spectroscopy. The molar enthalpies of vaporization of ionic liquids under study were derived from vapor pressure temperature dependences and adjusted to the reference temperature 298.15 K. The liquid phase molar enthalpy of formation of [C2mim][BF4] was derived from the solution calorimetry and combined with its molar vaporization enthalpy to get the first experimental gas-phase molar enthalpy of formation of the [BF4]− containing ionic liquid. A computational approach based on the DLPNO-CCSD(T) method was used to calculate the theoretical gas-phase molar enthalpy of formation of [C2mim][BF4]. The theoretical and experimental results were found to be in agreement within the combined uncertainties, providing the mutual validation of experimental and computational procedures used in the current study.

In this work supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) were developed via physical imbibition of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids incorporating either the tricyanomethanide ([TCM]−) or the trifluoromethanesulfonate ([TfO]−) anion, into tubular composite ceramic substrates bearing a mesoporous separation layer. The developed SILMs were evaluated with respect to their efficiency for removal of CO2 and SO2 gases from mixtures simulating dry flue gas. In this context, the effect of temperature, feed composition and trans-membrane pressure gradient on CO2/N2 and SO2/CO2 separation performance was studied. For all SILMs, the highest CO2/N2 selectivity values (up to 47.6) were exhibited at ambient temperature unlike to CO2 permeance that was favored by elevation of temperature. The SO2 permeances varied over the range of 3–9.6·10−8 mol m2 s−1 Pa−1 being much higher than those determined for CO2 at comparable conditions whereas the permeances of the two gases exhibited opposite temperature dependence. The SO2/CO2 selectivity reached up to 30.7 even though it was markedly reduced with rising temperature and applied pressure gradient, in qualitative accordance to the behavior of CO2/N2 selectivity. Besides physical interaction, the embedded ionic liquid incorporating [TfO]− anions showed also weak chemical interaction with absorbed SO2, the contribution of the which resulted in enhanced SO2 permeation rates as compared to the ones through the embedded tricyanomethanide-based ionic liquids.

We identify a pre-explosion counterpart to the nearby Type IIP supernova ASASSN-16fq (SN 2016cok) in archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data. The source appears to be a blend of several stars that prevents obtaining accurate photometry. However, with reasonable assumptions about the stellar temperature and extinction, the progenitor almost certainly had an initial mass M, Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, submitted to MNRAS

In this study, we report on the effects of three common transition metal ions, i.e., Ni2+, Cu2+ and Fe3+ on the electrodeposition of aluminum from a chloroaluminate ionic liquid, evaluated by means of electrochemical and morphological investigation. Aiming at the determination of the morphological and chemical effects on the aluminum coatings, variable amounts of ions were introduced into the electroplating bath. Thick (about 20 ?m) Al coatings were obtained by direct deposition (galvanostatic, 10 mA cm2, 2 h) on brass or carbon steel substrates (10 mm diameter disks), and their morphology was examined via rugosimetry, optical and electron microscopy. The chemical composition of the deposits was provided by EDX analysis. Nickel and iron resulted to have only moderate effects on the coatings properties, but copper affected the process even in tiny amounts being detected in the deposits for bath content as low as 10 ppm.

We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The velocity-binned lag profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV have a double-peaked structure indicative of a truncated Keplerian disk. The narrow absorption lines show delayed response to continuum variations corresponding to recombination in gas with a density of $\sim 10^5~\rm cm^{-3}$. The high-ionization narrow absorption lines decorrelate from continuum variations during the same period as the broad emission lines. Analyzing the response of these absorption lines during this period shows that the ionizing flux is diminished in strength relative to the far-ultraviolet continuum. The broad absorption lines associated with the X-ray obscurer decrease in strength during this same time interval. The appearance of X-ray obscuration in $\sim\,2012$ corresponds with an increase in the luminosity of NGC 5548 following an extended low state. We suggest that the obscurer is a disk wind triggered by the brightening of NGC 5548 following the decrease in size of the broad-line region during the preceding low-luminosity state., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures, uses aastex62.cls. We present the discovery of PS18kh, a tidal disruption event (TDE) discovered at the center of SDSS J075654.53+341543.6 ($d\simeq322$ Mpc) by the Pan-STARRS Survey for Transients. Our dataset includes pre-discovery survey data from Pan-STARRS, the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), and the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) as well as high-cadence, multi-wavelength follow-up data from ground-based telescopes and Swift, spanning from 56 days before peak light until 75 days after. The optical/UV emission from PS18kh is well-fit as a blackbody with temperatures ranging from $T\simeq12000$ K to $T\simeq25000$ K and it peaked at a luminosity of $L\simeq8.8\times10^{43}$ ergs s$^{-1}$. PS18kh radiated $E=(3.45\pm0.22)\times10^{50}$ ergs over the period of observation, with $(1.42\pm0.20)\times10^{50}$ ergs being released during the rise to peak. Spectra of PS18kh show a changing, boxy/double-peaked H$\alpha$ emission feature, which becomes more prominent over time. We use models of non-axisymmetric accretion disks to describe the profile of the H$\alpha$ line and its evolution. We find that at early times the high accretion rate leads the disk to emit a wind which modifies the shape of the line profile and makes it bell-shaped. At late times, the wind becomes optically thin, allowing the non-axisymmetric perturbations to show up in the line profile. The line-emitting portion of the disk extends from $r_{\rm in}\sim60r_{\rm g}$ to an outer radius of $r_{\rm out}\sim1400r_{\rm g}$ and the perturbations can be represented either as an eccentricity in the outer rings of the disk or as a spiral arm in the inner disk., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, 8 tables. We present the discovery and early evolution of ASASSN-19bt, a tidal disruption event (TDE) discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) at a distance of $d\simeq115$ Mpc and the first TDE to be detected by TESS. As the TDE is located in the TESS Continuous Viewing Zone, our dataset includes 30-minute cadence observations starting on 2018 July 25, and we precisely measure that the TDE begins to brighten $\sim8.3$ days before its discovery. Our dataset also includes 18 epochs of Swift UVOT and XRT observations, 2 epochs of XMM-Newton observations, 13 spectroscopic observations, and ground data from the Las Cumbres Observatory telescope network, spanning from 32 days before peak through 37 days after peak. ASASSN-19bt thus has the most detailed pre-peak dataset for any TDE. The TESS light curve indicates that the transient began to brighten on 2019 January 21.6 and that for the first 15 days its rise was consistent with a flux $\propto t^2$ power-law model. The optical/UV emission is well-fit by a blackbody SED, and ASASSN-19bt exhibits an early spike in its luminosity and temperature roughly 32 rest-frame days before peak and spanning up to 14 days that has not been seen in other TDEs, possibly because UV observations were not triggered early enough to detect it. It peaked on 2019 March 04.9 at a luminosity of $L\simeq1.3\times10^{44}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ and radiated $E\simeq3.2\times10^{50}$ ergs during the 41-day rise to peak. X-ray observations after peak indicate a softening of the hard X-ray emission prior to peak, reminiscent of the hard/soft states in X-ray binaries., 23 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables. We report comprehensive multi-wavelength observations of a peculiar Type Ia-like supernova ("SN Ia-pec") ASASSN-15pz. ASASSN-15pz is a spectroscopic "twin" of SN 2009dc, a so-called "Super-Chandrasekhar-mass" SN, throughout its evolution, but it has a peak luminosity M_B,peak = -19.69 +/- 0.12 mag that is \approx 0.6 mag dimmer and comparable to the SN 1991T sub-class of SNe Ia at the luminous end of the normal width-luminosity relation. The synthesized Ni56 mass of M_Ni56 = 1.13 +/- 0.14 M_sun is also substantially less than that found for several 2009dc-like SNe. Previous well-studied 2009dc-like SNe have generally suffered from large and uncertain amounts of host-galaxy extinction, which is negligible for ASASSN-15pz. Based on the color of ASASSN-15pz, we estimate a host extinction for SN 2009dc of E(B-V)_host=0.12 mag and confirm its high luminosity (M_B, peak[2009dc] \approx -20.3 mag). The 2009dc-like SN population, which represents ~1% of SNe Ia, exhibits a range of peak luminosities, and do not fit onto the tight width-luminosity relation. Their optical light curves also show significant diversity of late-time (>~ 50 days) decline rates. The nebular-phase spectra provide powerful diagnostics to identify the 2009dc-like events as a distinct class of SNe Ia. We suggest referring to these sources using the phenomenology-based "2009dc-like SN Ia-pec" instead of "Super-Chandrasekhar SN Ia," which is based on an uncertain theoretical interpretation., 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a new model, named poreReact, to simulate multispecies reactive transport on pore space images. We solve the Navier–Stokes equations and the advection-diffusion equation for concentration on an unstructured grid using the finite volume method implemented in OpenFOAM. We couple it with the chemical model Reaktoro, which we use to calculate the chemical equilibrium of homogeneous reactions in each grid cell, considered as a completely mixed batch reactor. We validate the model against analytical solutions and experimental data, and investigate, for a range of Peclet numbers, the interplay between transport and reaction for multispecies reactive transport in a 3D bead pack where two streams of reactants at different pH are injected in parallel. We analyse the distribution of species and the rates of formation and consumption in the pore space and find that, despite the relative homogeneity of the bead pack and symmetry in injection conditions, the concentration fields of the products can be asymmetric because of the interplay between transport and chemical equilibrium. For different Peclet numbers, we calculate relative yields (the ratio between the observed change in concentration and the change that would be obtained if the reactants were completely mixed). We observe that lower Peclet numbers give rise to higher relative yields because of increased transverse mixing by diffusion. However, higher absolute yields are obtained at higher injection velocities because of the larger amount of matter available for reaction in a given time. Reaction is more favoured in the faster-flowing regions of the pore space. However, this effect is more marked for species for which advection is the dominant mechanism of transport to reactive sites, as opposed to diffusion-mediated reactions where the full velocity distribution is sampled before reaction occurs.

Supernova (SN) 2018oh (ASASSN-18bt) is the first spectroscopically-confirmed type Ia supernova (SN Ia) observed in the $Kepler$ field. The $Kepler$ data revealed an excess emission in its early light curve, allowing to place interesting constraints on its progenitor system (Dimitriadis et al. 2018, Shappee et al. 2018b). Here, we present extensive optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared photometry, as well as dense sampling of optical spectra, for this object. SN 2018oh is relatively normal in its photometric evolution, with a rise time of 18.3$\pm$0.3 days and $\Delta$m$_{15}(B)=0.96\pm$0.03 mag, but it seems to have bluer $B - V$ colors. We construct the "uvoir" bolometric light curve having peak luminosity as 1.49$\times$10$^{43}$erg s$^{-1}$, from which we derive a nickel mass as 0.55$\pm$0.04M$_{\odot}$ by fitting radiation diffusion models powered by centrally located $^{56}$Ni. Note that the moment when nickel-powered luminosity starts to emerge is +3.85 days after the first light in the Kepler data, suggesting other origins of the early-time emission, e.g., mixing of $^{56}$Ni to outer layers of the ejecta or interaction between the ejecta and nearby circumstellar material or a non-degenerate companion star. The spectral evolution of SN 2018oh is similar to that of a normal SN Ia, but is characterized by prominent and persistent carbon absorption features. The C II features can be detected from the early phases to about 3 weeks after the maximum light, representing the latest detection of carbon ever recorded in a SN Ia. This indicates that a considerable amount of unburned carbon exists in the ejecta of SN 2018oh and may mix into deeper layers., Comment: 48 pages, 23 figures. We employ VLTI GRAVITY to resolve, for the first time, the two images generated by a gravitational microlens. The measurements of the image separation \theta_{-,+}=3.78 +/- 0.05 mas, and hence the Einstein radius \theta_E =1.87 +/- 0.03 mas, are precise. The Caribbean islands are considered a biodiversity hotspot, with high levels of endemism but also extreme levels of habitat loss. One factor causing local extinction or species scarcity is plant extraction by humans. Very few recent ethnobotanical studies exist for the Dutch Caribbean. We aimed to make a rapid sustainability assessment of wild plant harvesting on the island of St. Eustatius. A quantitative inventory of 11 plots (25 × 25 m) was carried out to obtain abundance data on wild plants, and 31 interviews were conducted to collect information on wild plant uses, extraction methods, and harvesting locations. In total, our respondents mentioned 181 useful plant species of which 66 were harvested exclusively from the wild. Four of these (Melocactus intortus (Mill.) Urb., Nectandra coriacea (Sw.) Griseb., Pilosocereus royenii (L.) Byles & G. D. Rowley, and Chiococca alba (L.) Hitchc.) may encounter sustainability problems in the future or might suffer from overharvesting already, as they do not survive harvesting and occur in low numbers in protected areas only. For the majority of wild species on St. Eustatius, plant extraction does not form an immediate threat to their survival. Several wild species are cultivated in gardens. Further population studies on the four shortlisted species are needed to calculate sustainable harvest levels and design adequate management plans for their survival in the future.

The last few years have seen major progress in harnessing on-chip photon-phonon interactions, leading to a wide range of demonstrations of new functionalities. Utilizing not only the optical response of a nonlinear waveguide - but also acoustic resonances - enables the realization of microwave devices with unprecedented performance, otherwise hard to achieve in all-optical processing schemes or electronically. Here, we overview on-chip stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) with special emphasis on microwave sources and microwave signal processing schemes. We review the different material platforms and structures for on-chip SBS, ranging from chalcogenide rib waveguides to hybrid silicon/silicon-nitride structures, high-Q photonic-phononic silica microresonators, and suspended silicon nanowires. We show that the paradigm shift in SBS research - from long length of fibers to chip-scale devices - is now moving toward fully integrated photonic-phononic CMOS chips.

Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) were successfully coated by uniform, adherent and homogenous ultra-thin crystalline diamond films through microwave enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MWCVD). The as-grown functionalized nanowires were employed as electrodes in a symmetric micro-supercapacitor (MSC) using a protic ionic liquid electrolyte [triethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide; Et3NH TFSI]. The electrochemical performance of the device delivered a specific capacitance of 1.5 mF cm−2 and a power density of 25 mW cm−2 using an enlarged cell voltage of 4 V. Furthermore, a remarkable cycling stability was evaluated after 1 · 106 galvanostatic cycles at a high current density of 10 mA cm−2 with an excellent capacitive behavior. These results confirm that diamond-coated SiNW micro-supercapacitors exhibit very promising performances dealing with MSCs based on CVD-grown SiNWs. Polymers of various architectures with zwitterionic functionality have recently been shown to effectively suppress nonspecific fouling of surfaces by proteins and prokaryotic (bacteria) or eukaryotic (mammalian) cells as well as other microorganisms and environmental contaminants. In this work, zwitterionic copolymers were used to make thin coatings on substrates with the layer-by-layer method. Polyelectrolyte multilayers, PEMUs, were built with [poly(allylamine hydrochloride)], PAH, and copolymers of acrylic acid and either the AEDAPS zwitterionic group 3-[2-(acrylamido)-ethyldimethyl ammonio] propane sulfonate (PAA-co-AEDAPS), or benzophenone (PAABp). Benzophenone allowed the PEMU to be toughened by photocrosslinking post-deposition. The attachment of two mammalian cell lines, rat aortic smooth muscle (A7r5) and mouse fibroblasts (3T3), and the biofilm-forming Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli was studied on PEMUs terminated with PAA-co-AEDAPS. Consistent with earlier studies, it is shown that PAH/PAA-co-AEDAPS PEMUs resist the adhesion of mammalian cells, but, contrary to our initial hypothesis, are bacterial adhesive and significantly so after maximizing the surface presentation of PAA-co-AEDAPS. This unexpected contrast in the adhesive behavior of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells is explained by differences in adhesion mechanisms as well as different responses to the topology and morphology of the multilayer surface.

This article studies the individual contribution of each term in the Navier-Stokes-Darcy (Brinkman) equation to the fluid linear momentum balance and the consequences of opting for the Darcy or Brinkman equations in 3D reactive flow simulations of a vuggy carbonate. A two-scale continuum model was used to simulate the acidification of a carbonate sample using the Darcy and Brinkman equations. Rock heterogeneity is considered in the initial porosity and permeability fields, which are calculated directly from micro-CT images. Simulations showed that the Darcy equation predicts the acid breakthrough earlier in most cases. The convective acceleration term in the Brinkman equation plays an important role in describing the fluid momentum balance at high injection velocities, and this is a clear evidence against the use of the Darcy equation to model reactive flow in such conditions.

We present the first results from a reverberation-mapping campaign undertaken during the first half of 2012, with additional data on one AGN (NGC 3227) from a 2014 campaign. Our main goals are (1) to determine the black hole masses from continuum-Hbeta reverberation signatures, and (2) to look for velocity-dependent time delays that might be indicators of the gross kinematics of the broad-line region. We successfully measure Hbeta time delays and black hole masses for five AGNs, four of which have previous reverberation mass measurements. The values measured here are in agreement with earlier estimates, though there is some intrinsic scatter beyond the formal measurement errors. We observe velocity dependent Hbeta lags in each case, and find that the patterns have changed in the intervening five years for three AGNs that were also observed in 2007., Accepted for publication on ApJ; 32 pages, 16 figures, 10 tables

We present the discovery of ASASSN-18ey (MAXI J1820+070), a new black hole low-mass X-ray binary discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN). A week after ASAS-SN discovered ASASSN-18ey as an optical transient, it was detected as an X-ray transient by MAXI/GCS. Here, we analyze ASAS-SN and Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) pre-outburst optical light curves, finding evidence of intrinsic variability for several years prior to the outburst. While there was no long-term rise leading to outburst, as has been seen in several other systems, the start of the outburst in the optical preceded that in the X-rays by $7.20\pm0.97~\rm days$. We analyze the spectroscopic evolution of ASASSN-18ey from pre-maximum to $> 100~\rm days$ post-maximum. The spectra of ASASSN-18ey exhibit broad, asymmetric, double-peaked H$\alpha$ emission. The Bowen blend ($\lambda \approx 4650$\AA) in the post-maximum spectra shows highly variable double-peaked profiles, likely arising from irradiation of the companion by the accretion disk, typical of low-mass X-ray binaries. The optical and X-ray luminosities of ASASSN-18ey are consistent with black hole low-mass X-ray binaries, both in outburst and quiescence., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted by ApJL. The N‐iodosuccinimide‐mediated spirocyclization of tryptamine‐derived isocyanides to generate spiroindolenines is reported. The products contain both an imine and an imidoyl iodide as flexible handles for follow‐up chemistry. Nucleophilic addition typically occurs chemoselectively on the imine moiety with complete diastereoselectivity, providing opportunities for the construction of complex molecular frameworks. The synthetic potential of the method was showcased in the formal total synthesis of (±)‐aspidofractinine.

We report the discovery of the first likely black hole in a non-interacting binary system with a field red giant. By combining radial velocity measurements from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) with photometric variability data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), we identified the bright rapidly-rotating giant 2MASS J05215658+4359220 as a binary system with a massive unseen companion. Subsequent radial velocity measurements reveal a system with an orbital period of 83 days and near-zero eccentricity. The photometric variability period of the giant is consistent with the orbital period, indicative of star spots and tidal synchronization. Constraints on the giant's mass and radius from its luminosity, surface gravity, and temperature imply an unseen companion with mass of $3.3^{+2.8}_{-0.7}$ M$_\odot$, indicating a low-mass black hole or an exceedingly massive neutron star. Measurement of the astrometric binary motion by {\it Gaia} will further characterize the system. This discovery demonstrates the potential of massive spectroscopic surveys like APOGEE and all-sky, high-cadence photometric surveys like ASAS-SN to revolutionize our understanding of the compact object mass function, and to test theories of binary star evolution and the supernova mechanism.

We report a luminous Type II supernova, ASASSN-15nx, with a peak luminosity of M_V=-20 mag, that is between typical core-collapse supernovae and super-luminous supernovae. The post-peak optical light curves show a long, linear decline with a steep slope of 2.5 mag/100 days (i.e., an exponential decline in flux), through the end of observations at phase ~260 days. In contrast, the light curves of hydrogen rich supernovae (SNe II-P/L) always show breaks in their light curves at phase ~100 days, before settling onto Co56 radioactive decay tails with a decline rate of about 1 mag/100 days. The spectra of ASASSN-15nx do not exhibit the narrow emission-line features characteristic of Type IIn SNe, which can have a wide variety of light-curve shapes usually attributed to strong interactions with a dense circumstellar medium (CSM). ASASSN-15nx has a number of spectroscopic peculiarities, including a relatively weak and triangularly-shaped H-alpha emission profile with no absorption component. The physical origin of these peculiarities is unclear, but the long and linear post-peak light curve without a break suggests a single dominant powering mechanism. Decay of a large amount of Ni56 (M_Ni56 = 1.6 +/- 0.2 M_sun) can power the light curve of ASASSN-15nx, and the steep light-curve slope requires substantial gamma-ray escape from the ejecta, which is possible given a low-mass hydrogen envelope for the progenitor. Another possibility is strong CSM interactions powering the light curve, but the CSM needs to be sculpted to produce the unique light-curve shape and to avoid producing SN IIn-like narrow emission lines., Accepted for publication in ApJ. We present late-time optical spectroscopy and X-ray, UV, and optical photometry of the nearby ($d=214$ Mpc, $z=0.0479$) tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-15oi. The optical spectra span 450 days after discovery and show little remaining transient emission or evolution after roughly 3 months. In contrast, the Swift and XMM-Newton observations indicate the presence of evolving X-ray emission and lingering thermal UV emission that is still present 600 days after discovery. The thermal component of the X-ray emission shows a unique, slow brightening by roughly an order of magnitude to become the dominant source of emission from the TDE at later times, while the hard component of the X-ray emission remains weak and relatively constant throughout the flare. The TDE radiated $(1.32\pm0.06)\times10^{51}$ ergs across all wavelengths, and the UV and optical emission is consistent with a power law decline and potentially indicative of a late-time shift in the power-law index that could be caused by a transition in the dominant emission mechanism., 16 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. International audience; In this work, we propose a new eutectic ionic liquid mixture based on 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and 1-propyl-3-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide to be employed as electrolyte in large temperature range supercapacitor applications. The electrolyte exhibited excellent thermal properties in terms of high temperature decomposition (440 °C), a very low melting temperature (no phase transition up to −70 °C) as well as a wide electrochemical window (4.4 V vs Pt). Accordingly, a symmetric coin cell supercapacitor device was performed using porous Ni-foam electrodes in presence of the corresponding mixture at an extended working temperature range from −70 °C to 80 °C. The electrochemical performance of the device was characterised by a wide electrochemical window of 3.5 V maintaining an excellent electrochemical double layer capacitive behavior in all the range. In addition, areal capacitance values between 5 μF cm−2 (−70 °C) and 100 μF cm−2 (80 °C) were obtained at a high scan rate of 20 V s−1, evidencing the rapid and extraordinary electrochemical response even at such extreme temperatures with an excellent cycling stability.

Supernova (SN) 2016bdu is an unusual transient resembling SN 2009ip. SN 2009ip-like events are characterized by a long-lasting phase of erratic variability which ends with two luminous outbursts a few weeks apart. The second outburst is significantly more luminous (about 3 mag) than the first. In the case of SN 2016bdu, the first outburst (Event A) reached an absolute magnitude M(r) ~ -15.3 mag, while the second one (Event B) occurred over one month later and reached M(r) ~ -18 mag. By inspecting archival data, a faint source at the position of SN 2016bdu is detectable several times in the past few years. We interpret these detections as signatures of a phase of erratic variability, similar to that experienced by SN 2009ip between 2008 and mid-2012, and resembling the currently observed variability of the luminous blue variable SN 2000ch in NGC 3432. Spectroscopic monitoring of SN 2016bdu during the second peak initially shows features typical of a SN IIn. One month after the Event B maximum, the spectra develop broad Balmer lines with P Cygni profiles and broad metal features. At these late phases, the spectra resemble those of a typical Type II SN. All members of this SN 2009ip-like group are remarkably similar to the Type IIn SN 2005gl. For this object, the claim of a terminal SN explosion is supported by the disappearance of the progenitor star. We present a catalog of 4880 newly identified RR Lyrae variable stars (4433 RRab, 446 RRc and 1 RRd) found during the search for supernovae by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). The light curves, classified using the "Upsilon" random forest classifier and visually verified, are available through the ASAS-SN variable star database (https://asas-sn.osu.edu/variables). The database also contains light curves for an expanding number of additional new variables (~50,000 at present) and will begin to include the light curves of known variable stars in the near future., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the Type II supernova ASASSN-14jb, together with VLT MUSE IFU observations of its host galaxy and a nebular-phase spectrum. This SN, in the nearby galaxy ESO 467-G051 ($z=0.006$), was discovered and followed-up by the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN). We present LCOGTN $BVgri$ and $Swift$ $w2m1w1ubv$ optical and near-UV/optical light curves and several optical spectra in the early photospheric phase. ASASSN-14jb exploded $\sim 2$ kpc above the star-forming disk of ESO 467-G051, an edge-on disk galaxy. The large projected distance from the disk and non-detection of any H II region in a 1.4 kpc radius in projection are in conflict with the standard environment of core-collapse supernova progenitors and suggests the possible scenario that the progenitor received a kick in a binary interaction. Our analysis yields $D=25\pm 1$ Mpc, $M(^{56}Ni) = 0.0210 \pm 0.0025$ M$_\odot$, $E_{exp}\approx 0.25 \times 10^{51}$ ergs, $M_{ej}\approx 6$ M$_\odot$, and progenitor $R_* = 580 \pm 28$ R$_\odot$, which seems to be consistent with the sub-Solar metallicity of $0.3 \pm 0.1$ Z$_\odot$ derived from the SN spectrum. The nebular spectrum constrains $M_{prog} \simeq 10-12 $ M$_{\odot}$. We discuss the low oxygen abundance of the host galaxy derived from the MUSE data, $12+\log{(O/H)} = 8.27^{+0.16}_{-0.20}$ (O3N2 strong line method), and compare it with the supernova spectra, which is also consistent with a sub-Solar metallicity progenitor. We finally discuss the possible scenarios for the unusual environment for ASASSN-14jb and conclude that either the in-situ star formation or a runaway would imply a low mass progenitor, agreeing with our estimate from the supernova nebular spectrum. Hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) have been predominantly found in low-metallicity, star-forming dwarf galaxies. Here we identify Gaia17biu/SN 2017egm as an SLSN-I occurring in a "normal" spiral galaxy (NGC 3191) in terms of stellar mass (several times 10^10 M_sun) and metallicity (roughly Solar). At redshift z=0.031, Gaia17biu is also the lowest redshift SLSN-I to date, and the absence of a larger population of SLSNe-I in dwarf galaxies of similar redshift suggests that metallicity is likely less important to the production of SLSNe-I than previously believed. With the smallest distance and highest apparent brightness for an SLSN-I, we are able to study Gaia17biu in unprecedented detail. Its pre-peak near-ultraviolet to optical color is similar to that of Gaia16apd and among the bluest observed for an SLSN-I while its peak luminosity (M_g = -21 mag) is substantially lower than Gaia16apd. Thanks to the high signal-to-noise ratios of our spectra, we identify several new spectroscopic features that may help to probe the properties of these enigmatic explosions. We detect polarization at the ~0.5% level that is not strongly dependent on wavelength, suggesting a modest, global departure from spherical symmetry. We examine the early phase intrinsic $(B-V)_{0}$ color evolution of a dozen Type~Ia supernovae discovered within three days of the inferred time of first light ($t_{first}$) and have $(B-V)_0$ color information beginning within 5 days of $t_{first}$. The sample indicates there are two distinct early populations. The first is a population exhibiting blue colors that slowlybevolve, and the second population exhibits red colors and evolves more rapidly. We find that the early-blue events are all 1991T/1999aa-like with more luminous slower declining light curves than those exhibiting early-red colors. Placing the first sample on the Branch diagram (i.e., ratio of \ion{Si}{2} $\lambda\lambda$5972, 6355 pseudo-Equivalent widths) indicates all blue objects are of the Branch Shallow Silicon (SS) spectral type, while all early-red events except for the 2000cx-like SN~2012fr are of the Branch Core-Normal (CN) or CooL (CL) type. A number of potential processes contributing to the early emission are explored, and we find that, in general, the viewing-angle dependance inherent in the companion collision model is inconsistent with all SS objects with early-time observations being blue and exhibiting an excess. We caution that great care must be taken when interpreting early-phase light curves as there may be a variety of physical processes that are possibly at play and significant theoretical work remains to be done., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters. We report the discovery of 19 new R Coronae Borealis (RCB) star and DY Per candidates with light curves from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). We examined both an existing set of 1602 near/mid-IR selected candidates and an additional 2615 candidates selected to have near/mid-IR SEDs consistent with those of known R Coronae Borealis stars.
