Both experiments and simulations have shown that single-event burnout (SEB), a catastrophic event, occurs at less than half of the rated blocking voltage in commercial 4H-SiC power devices under a heavy-ion strike. The failure was shown to be due to significant impact ionization near the epi/substrate interface. Adding a buffer layer between the drift epi and substrate layers reduces the impact ionization effect and changes the thermal failure location. In this article, the SEB phenomenon in a 4H-SiC power MOSFET utilizing a buffer layer is investigated. Heavy-ion transport and 3-D electro-thermal transient simulations were performed to study the device response to a heavy-ion strike. In examining the time evolution of electric field profile, charge carrier dynamics, and thermal heat transfer, it is determined that the failure mode for this design is the location shift of the mesoplasma (or hot spot) to within the drift epi region, away from the high field area. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to identify the dominant electrical or thermal factors contributing to device failure due to second breakdown. From these simulations, it is found that the semiconductor thermal conductivity is the primary material parameter that influences the mesoplasma formation.

Pancreatic lipase (PL) is a key enzyme responsible for the digestion of dietary triglycerides; hence its inhibition is considered as a promising target for the management and/or treatment of obesity. A new series of indole-thiazolidinedione (TZD) hybrid analogues were synthesized using a molecular hybridisation approach and evaluated for their anti-obesity effects via PL inhibition. The targeted analogues were synthesized via the condensation reaction between various substituted isatin with TZD in the presence of aqueous KOH in methanol. Amongst the synthesized analogues, 7k and 7m exhibited a potential PL inhibitory activity (IC50 – 7.30 and 9.51 μM, respectively). Kinetic study of these potent analogues revealed their competitive mode of enzyme inhibition. This fact was confirmed via fluorescence spectroscopy which further suggested the presence of one binding site for the synthesized analogues. Molecular docking of the synthesized analogues was performed using human PL (PDB ID: 1LPB). The obtained MolDock scores were aligned with the in vitro PL inhibitory activity (Pearson's r = 0.9108, p < 0.05). Moreover, a stable conformation of the 1LPB-ligands suggested the stability of these complexes in the dynamic environment. These studies provided a basis for the potential role of the indole-TZD hybrids in PL inhibition and further optimization might result in the development of new lead candidates for obesity treatment.

The NASA Rapid Ozone Experiment (ROZE) is a broadband cavity-enhanced UV (ultraviolet) absorption instrument for the detection of in situ ozone (O3). ROZE uses an incoherent LED (light-emitting diode) light source coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity to achieve an effective pathlength of ∼ 104 m. Due to its high sensitivity and small optical cell volume, ROZE demonstrates a 1σ precision of 80 pptv (parts per trillion by volume) in 0.1 s and 31 pptv in a 1 s integration time, as well as an e-fold time response of 50 ms. ROZE can be operated in a range of field environments, including low- and high-altitude research aircraft, and is particularly suited to O3 vertical-flux measurements using the eddy covariance technique. ROZE was successfully integrated aboard the NASA DC-8 aircraft during July–September 2019 and validated against a well-established chemiluminescence measurement of O3. A flight within the marine boundary layer also demonstrated flux measurement capabilities, and we observed a mean O3 deposition velocity of 0.029 ± 0.005 cm s−1 to the ocean surface. The performance characteristics detailed below make ROZE a robust, versatile instrument for field measurements of O3.

The present study investigated the synergistic potential of methanol extract/fractions of Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze (CSM) leaves and orlistat on inhibition of Pancreatic Lipase (PL). Since PL is responsible for 50–70% of dietary fats digestion, its inhibition is considered as a promising target for the management of obesity. A synergy guided fractionation strategy has been incorporated with the help of combination index (CI) and isobologram methods. CSM exhibited a potential synergistic activity in combination with orlistat (CI value: 0.66). Amongst the subfractions of CSM, polyphenol-rich fraction exhibited a greater synergistic potential (CI-0.35) than remaining fractions. HPLC analysis identified epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as major phytochemicals in polyphenol-rich fraction and the most active subfractions (F6 and F7). Two drug and three-drug combinations of these phytochemicals were investigated by partnering with orlistat. The three-drug combination (orlistat-EGCG-ECG) exhibited a greater synergistic potential (CI value-0.17) than the two-drug combinations of EGCG-orlistat and ECG-orlistat (CI values of 0.40 & 0.71, respectively). The resultant orlistat-EGCG-ECG combination resulted in a 12.11-fold dose reduction index for orlistat. Thus, synergistic drug combinations of polyphenol-rich fraction along with orlistat offers the prospect to enhance the orlistat anti-obesity efficacy in a decreased dose level, that will help to reduce its associated toxicities while maintaining its efficacy.

In mammalian cells, N-glycans may include multiple N-acetyllactosamine (poly-LacNAc) units that can play roles in various cellular functions and properties of therapeutic recombinant proteins. Previous studies indicated that β-1,3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase 2 (B3GNT2) and β-1,4-galactotransferase 1 (B4GALT1) are two of the primary glycosyltransferases involved in generating LacNAc units. In the current study, knocking out sialyltransferase genes slightly enhanced the LacNAc content (≥4 repeats per glycan) on recombinant EPO protein. Next, the role of single and dual-overexpression of B3GNT2 and B4GALT1 was explored in recombinant EPO-expressing Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. While overexpression of B4GALT1 slightly enhanced the levels of large glycans on recombinant EPO, overexpression of B3GNT2 in EPO-expressing CHO cells significantly decreased the recombinant EPO LacNAc content, resulting in N-glycans terminating primarily with GlcNAc structures, a limited number of Gals, and nearly undetectable sialylation, which was also observed in sialyltransferases knock-out-B3GNT2 overexpression cell lines. Considering the nature of the binding domain motifs present on B3GNT2, which evolved from β1,3-galactosyltransferases, its overexpression may have competed and inhibited endogenous β1,4-galactosyltransferases for exposed GlcNAc residues on the N-glycans, resulting in premature termination of many N-glycans at GlcNAc. Furthermore, B3GNT2 overexpression enhanced intracellular UDP-GlcNAc and CMP-Neu5Ac content while slightly lowering UDP-Gal content. The presence of a sink for UDP-GlcNAc in the form of B3GNT2 with no disposition may have also elevated the intracellular levels of this nucleotide as well as its downstream product, CMP-Neu5Ac. Furthermore, we were unable to overexpress B4GALT1 at either the transcriptional or translational levels following initial B3GNT2 expression. Expression of B3GNT2 following initial expression of B4GALT1 was also problematic in that transcriptional and translational analysis indicated the accumulation of truncated B3GNT2 missing a section of the B3GNT2 trans-Golgi lumen domain while transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains were present. Given that glycosylation is a very complex intra-network process, the addition of one or more recombinant glycosyltransferases may have an unexpected influence on the expression and activities of glycosyltransferases, which can disrupt the nucleotide sugar levels and lead to unexpected modifications of the resulting N-glycan patterns.

This paper describes the mechanisms behind the failure of silicon carbide (SiC) Power MOSFETs (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors) when struck by a heavy ion. The modeled device is designed to simulate a commercially available 1200 V power MOSFET under the strike of a silver ion with a Linear Energy Transfer (LET) of 46 MeV-cm2/mg commonly used in single event effect (SEE) testing. The device is shown in simulation to fail near 500 V, which is in close agreement to experiments. The failure occurs near the interface between the epitaxial layer and the substrate layer due to the rapid increase of the electric field in that region and destruction of the device from impact ionization. Two improved designs were proposed and investigated that would help to mitigate the electric field in these regions and improve the device’s tolerance to single-event burnout (SEB). The new designs increased the voltage at which SEB occurs from 500 V to over 900 V and increased the specific on-resistance (Ron,sp) by only 5%.

Aerosols and clouds affect atmospheric radiative processes and climate in many complex ways and still pose the largest uncertainty in current estimates of the Earth's changing energy budget. Airborne in situ sensors such as the Cloud, Aerosol, and Precipitation Spectrometer (CAPS) or other optical spectrometers and optical array probes provide detailed information about the horizontal and vertical distribution of aerosol and cloud properties. However, flow distortions occurring at the location where these instruments are mounted on the outside of an aircraft may directly produce artifacts in detected particle number concentration and also cause droplet deformation and/or breakup during the measurement process. Several studies have investigated flow-induced errors assuming that air is incompressible. However, for fast-flying aircraft, the impact of air compressibility is no longer negligible. In this study, we combine airborne data with numerical simulations to investigate the flow around wing-mounted instruments and the induced errors for different realistic flight conditions. A correction scheme for deriving particle number concentrations from in situ aerosol and cloud probes is proposed, and a new formula is provided for deriving the droplet volume from images taken by optical array probes. Shape distortions of liquid droplets can either be caused by errors in the speed with which the images are recorded or by aerodynamic forces acting at the droplet surface caused by changes of the airflow when it approaches the instrument. These forces can lead to the dynamic breakup of droplets causing artifacts in particle number concentration and size. An estimation of the critical breakup diameter as a function of flight conditions is provided. Experimental data show that the flow speed at the instrument location is smaller than the ambient flow speed. Our simulations confirm the observed difference and reveal a size-dependent impact on particle speed and concentration. This leads, on average, to a 25 % overestimation of the number concentration of particles with diameters larger than 10 µm diameter and causes distorted images of droplets and ice crystals if the flow values recorded at the instrument are used. With the proposed corrections, errors of particle number concentration and droplet volume, as well as image distortions, are significantly reduced by up to 1 order of magnitude. Although the presented correction scheme is derived for the DLR Falcon research aircraft (Saharan Aerosol Long-range Transport and Aerosol-Cloud-Interaction Experiment (SALTRACE) campaign) and validated for the DLR Falcon (Absorbing aerosol layers in a changing climate: aging, lifetime and dynamics mission conducted in 2017 (A-LIFE) campaign) and the NASA DC-8 (Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom) campaigns), the general conclusions hold for any fast-flying research aircraft.

We examine thermodynamic and kinematic structures of terrain trapped airflows (TTAs) during an atmospheric river (AR) event impacting Northern California 10–11 March 2016 using Alpha Jet Atmospheric eXperiment (AJAX) aircraft data, in situ observations, and Weather and Research Forecasting (WRF) Model simulations. TTAs are identified by locally intensified low-level winds flowing parallel to the coastal ranges and having maxima over the near-coastal waters. Multiple mechanisms can produce TTAs, including terrain blocking and gap flows. The changes in winds can significantly alter the distribution, timing, and intensity of precipitation. We show here how different mechanisms producing TTAs evolve during this event and influence local precipitation variations. Three different periods are identified from the time-varying wind fields. During period 1 (P1), a TTA develops during synoptic-scale onshore flow that backs to southerly flow near the coast. This TTA occurs when the Froude number (Fr) is less than 1, suggesting low-level terrain blocking is the primary mechanism. During period 2 (P2), a Petaluma offshore gap flow develops, with flows turning parallel to the coast offshore and with Fr > 1. Periods P1 and P2 are associated with slightly more coastal than mountain precipitation. In period 3 (P3), the gap flow initiated during P2 merges with a pre-cold-frontal low-level jet (LLJ) and enhanced precipitation shifts to higher mountain regions. Dynamical mixing also becomes more important as the TTA becomes confluent with the approaching LLJ. The different mechanisms producing TTAs and their effects on precipitation pose challenges to observational and modeling systems needed to improve forecasts and early warnings of AR events.

A novel series of 21 indolyl oxoacetamide analogues was designed based on the natural product lead conophylline, and evaluated for their pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity using porcine pancreatic lipase (Type II). Analogues 12c and 12b exhibited comparatively greater potential (IC50 values of 2.95 and 3.26 μM) than conophylline (IC50 – 3.31 μM), while the standard drug, orlistat, exhibited a potent IC50 value of 0.99 μM. Further, analogues 12b and 12c exhibited reversible competitive inhibition similar to orlistat and conophylline, and possessed Ki values of 1.89 and 1.69 μM, respectively. Molecular docking of these analogues was in agreement with the in vitro results, wherein the MolDock scores exhibited significant correlation with their inhibitory activity. A 10 ns molecular dynamics simulation of 12c complexed with pancreatic lipase confirmed the role of extended alkyl interactions, along with π–π stacking and π–cation interactions, in stabilising the ligand in the active site (maximum observed RMSD ≈ 3.5 A). ADMET prediction indicated the GI absorption of these analogues to be high; however, they did not possess carcinogenicity and hepatotoxicity in contrast to orlistat and conophylline.

Due to the pharmacological activities of quinazoline and quinazolinone scaffolds, it has aroused great interest in medicinal chemists for the development of new drugs or drug candidates. The pharmacological activities of quinazoline and its related scaffolds include anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-convulsant, and antihyperlipidaemia. Recently, molecular hybridization technology is used for the development of hybrid analogues with improved potency by combining two or more pharmacophores of bioactive scaffolds. The molecular hybridization of various biologically active pharmacophores with quinazoline derivatives resulted in lead compounds with multi-faceted biological activity wherein specific as well as multiple targets were involved. The present review summarizes the advances in lead compounds of quinazoline hybrids and their related heterocycles in medicinal chemistry. Moreover, the review also helps to intensify the drug development process by providing an understanding of the potential role of these hybridized pharmacophoric features in exhibiting various pharmacological activities.

The NASA Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) project included goals related to aerosol particle life cycle in convective regimes. Using the University of Wisconsin High Spectral Resolution Lidar system at Huntsville, Alabama, USA, and the NASA DC-8 research aircraft, we investigate the altitude dependence of aerosol, water vapor and Altocumulus (Ac) properties in the free troposphere from a canonical 12 August 2013 convective storm case as a segue to a presentation of a mission-wide analysis. It stands to reason that any moisture detrainment from convection must have an associated aerosol layer. Modes of covariability between aerosol, water vapor and Ac are examined relative to the boundary layer entrainment zone, 0 ∘C level, and anvil, a region known to contain Ac clouds and a complex aerosol layering structure (Reid et al., 2017). Multiple aerosol layers in regions warmer than 0 ∘C were observed within the planetary boundary layer entrainment zone. At 0 ∘C there is a proclivity for aerosol and water vapor detrainment from storms, in association with melting level Ac shelves. Finally, at temperatures colder than 0 ∘C, weak aerosol layers were identified above Cumulus congestus tops (∼0 and ∼-20 ∘C). Stronger aerosol signals return in association with anvil outflow. In situ data suggest that detraining particles undergo aqueous-phase or heterogeneous chemical or microphysical transformations, while at the same time larger particles are being scavenged at higher altitudes leading to enhanced nucleation. We conclude by discussing hypotheses regarding links to aerosol emissions and potential indirect effects on Ac clouds.

Emission estimates of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) and the meteorological factors affecting them are investigated over Sacramento, California, using an aircraft equipped with a cavity ring-down greenhouse gas sensor as part of the Alpha Jet Atmospheric eXperiment (AJAX) project. To better constrain the emission fluxes, we designed flights in a cylindrical pattern and computed the emission fluxes from two flights using a kriging method and Gauss's divergence theorem. Differences in wind treatment and assumptions about background concentrations affect the emission estimates by a factor of 1.5 to 7. The uncertainty is also impacted by meteorological conditions and distance from the emission sources. The vertical layer averaging affects the flux estimate, but the choice of raw wind or mass-balanced wind is more important than the thickness of the vertical averaging for mass-balanced wind for both urban and local scales. The importance of vertical mass transfer for flux estimates is examined, and the difference in the total emission estimate with and without vertical mass transfer is found to be small, especially at the local scale. The total flux estimates accounting for the entire circumference are larger than those based solely on measurements made in the downwind region. This indicates that a closed-shape flight profile can better contain total emissions relative to a one-sided curtain flight because most cities have more than one point source and wind direction can change with time and altitude. To reduce the uncertainty of the emission estimate, it is important that the sampling strategy account not only for known source locations but also possible unidentified sources around the city. Our results highlight that aircraft-based measurements using a closed-shape flight pattern are an efficient and useful strategy for identifying emission sources and estimating local- and city-scale greenhouse gas emission fluxes.

Public participation in scientific projects is flourishing globally as part of projects labeled “citizen science” (CS). Already, a number of professional networks for CS stakeholders have been founded, for example, the US-based Citizen Science Association, the European Citizen Science Association, and the Australian Citizen Science Association. As citizen science (CS) continues to grow, researchers and participants should move toward a shared understanding of what the practice is, what it is not, and what criteria CS projects must fulfill to ensure high-quality participatory research. Image credit: David Cutler (artist). But what exactly qualifies as CS? It is interpreted in various ways (1) and takes different forms with different degrees of participation (2). In fact, the label CS is currently assigned to research activities either by project principal investigators (PIs) themselves or by research funding agencies. Against this backdrop, critical observers of CS, such as Guerrini et al. (3), have drawn attention to important legal and ethical issues including intellectual property and scientific integrity. Similarly, Vayena and Tasioulas (4) note the importance of protecting the interests of research participants in biomedical participant-led research, and Buyx et al. (5) note the need for a solidarity-based practice of CS to fully exploit its potential, making “every participant a PI.” In light of the rapid growth of CS, present concerns, and calls for further improving the value of CS, we see several issues for policymakers, funding agencies, and citizens. Specifically, we believe that researchers and participants should move toward a shared understanding of what CS is, what it is not, and what criteria CS projects must fulfill to ensure high-quality participatory research (6). Establishing criteria will help ensure that CS projects are rigorous, help the field flourish, and where applicable encourage policymakers to take CS project data and results seriously. In the present work, we report compilation and analysis of 245 drugs, including small and macromolecules approved by the U.S. FDA from 2015 until June 2020. Nearly 29% of the drugs were approved for the treatment of various types of cancers. Other major therapeutic areas of focus were infectious diseases (14%); neurological conditions (12%); and genetic, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders (7-8% each). Itemization of the approved drugs according to the year of approval, sponsor, target, chemical class, major drug-metabolizing enzyme(s), route of administration/elimination, and drug-drug interaction liability (perpetrator or/and victim) is presented and discussed. An effort has been made to analyze the pharmacophores to identify the structural (e.g., aromatic, heterocycle, and aliphatic), elemental (e.g., boron, sulfur, fluorine, phosphorus, and deuterium), and functional group (e.g., nitro drugs) diversity among the approved drugs. Further, descriptor-based chemical space analysis of FDA approved drugs and several strategies utilized for optimizing metabolism leading to their discoveries have been emphasized. Finally, an analysis of drug-likeness for the approved drugs is presented.

UCATS (the UAS Chromatograph for Atmospheric Trace Species) was designed and built for observations of important atmospheric trace gases from unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UT/LS). Initially it measured major chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and the stratospheric transport tracers nitrous oxide (N2O) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), using gas chromatography with electron capture detection. Compact ozone (O3) and water vapor (H2O) instruments were added to enhance science missions on platforms with relatively small payloads. Over the past decade, UCATS has been reconfigured to measure methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), and molecular hydrogen (H2) instead of CFCs and has undergone numerous upgrades to its subsystems. It has served as part of large payloads on stratospheric UAS missions to probe the tropical tropopause region and transport of air into the stratosphere, in piloted aircraft studies of greenhouse gases, transport, and chemistry in the troposphere, and will soon return to the study of stratospheric ozone depletion, one of the original goals for UCATS. Each deployment brought different challenges, which were largely met or resolved. The design, capabilities, modifications and some results from UCATS are shown and described here, including changes for upcoming missions.

Filamentous fungi secrete protein with a very high efficiency, and this potential can be exploited advantageously to produce therapeutic proteins at low costs. A significant barrier to this goal is posed by the fact that fungal N-glycosylation varies substantially from that of humans. Inappropriate N-glycosylation of therapeutics results in reduced product quality, including poor efficacy, decreased serum half-life, and undesirable immune reactions. One solution to this problem is to reprogram the glycosylation pathway of filamentous fungi to decorate proteins with glycans that match, or can be remodeled into, those that are accepted by humans. In yeast, deletion of ALG3 leads to the accumulation of Man5GlcNAc2 glycan structures that can act as a precursor for remodeling. However, in Aspergilli, deletion of the ALG3 homolog algC leads to an N-glycan pool where the majority of the structures contain more hexose residues than the Man3-5GlcNAc2 species that can serve as substrates for humanized glycan structures. Hence, additional strain optimization is required. In this report, we have used gene deletions in combination with enzymatic and chemical glycan treatments to investigate N-glycosylation in the model fungus Aspergillus nidulans. In vitro analyses showed that only some of the N-glycan structures produced by a mutant A. nidulans strain, which is devoid of any of the known ER mannose transferases, can be trimmed into desirable Man3GlcNAc2 glycan structures, as substantial amounts of glycan structures appear to be capped by glucose residues. In agreement with this view, deletion of the ALG6 homolog algF, which encodes the putative α-1,3- glucosyltransferase that adds the first glucose residue to the growing ER glycan structure, dramatically reduces the amounts of Hex6-7HexNAc2 structures. Similarly, these structures are also sensitive to overexpression of the genes encoding the heterodimeric α-glucosidase II complex. Without the glucose caps, a new set of large N-glycan structures was formed. Formation of this set is mostly, perhaps entirely, due to mannosylation, as overexpression of the gene encoding mannosidase activity led to their elimination. Based on our new insights into the N-glycan processing in A. nidulans, an A. nidulans mutant strain was constructed in which more than 70% of the glycoforms appear to be Man3-5GlcNAc2 species, which may serve as precursors for further engineering in order to create more complex human-like N-glycan structures.

International audience; The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) instrument was launched out of Wanaka, New Zealand, by NASA in April, 2017 as a mission of opportunity. The detector was developed as part of the Joint Experimental Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory (JEM-EUSO) program toward a space-based ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) telescope with the main objective to make the first observation of UHECRs via the fluorescence technique from suborbital space. The EUSO-SPB1 instrument is a refractive telescope consisting of two 1m$^{2}$ Fresnel lenses with a high-speed UV camera at the focal plane. The camera has 2304 individual pixels capable of single photoelectron counting with a time resolution of 2.5μ s. A detailed performance study including calibration was done on ground. We separately evaluated the properties of the Photo Detector Module (PDM) and the optical system in the laboratory. An end-to-end test of the instrument was performed during a field campaign in the West Desert in Utah, USA at the Telescope Array (TA) site in September 2016. The campaign lasted for 8 nights. In this article we present the results of the preflight laboratory and field tests. Based on the tests performed in the field, it was determined that EUSO-SPB1 has a field of view of 11.1$^{∘}$ and an absolute photo-detection efficiency of 10%. We also measured the light flux necessary to obtain a 50% trigger efficiency using laser beams. These measurements were crucial for us to perform an accurate post flight event rate calculation to validate our cosmic ray search. Laser beams were also used to estimated the reconstruction angular resolution. Finally, we performed a flat field measurement in flight configuration at the launch site prior to the launch providing a uniformity of the focal surface better than 6%.

The Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) is designed to accurately observe ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and cosmic neutrinos from space with sensitivity over the full celestial sky. POEMMA will observe the extensive air showers (EASs) from UHECRs and UHE neutrinos above 20 EeV via air fluorescence. Additionally, POEMMA will observe the Cherenkov signal from upward-moving EASs induced by Earth-interacting tau neutrinos above 20 PeV. The POEMMA spacecraft are designed to quickly re-orientate to follow up transient neutrino sources and obtain unparalleled neutrino flux sensitivity. Developed as a NASA Astrophysics Probe-class mission, POEMMA consists of two identical satellites flying in loose formation in 525 km altitude orbits. Each POEMMA instrument incorporates a wide field-of-view (45$^\circ$) Schmidt telescope with over 6 m$^2$ of collecting area. The hybrid focal surface of each telescope includes a fast (1~$\mu$s) near-ultraviolet camera for EAS fluorescence observations and an ultrafast (10~ns) optical camera for Cherenkov EAS observations. The underlying nature of the process of star formation quenching in the central regions of barred disc galaxies that is due to the action of stellar bar is not fully understood. We present a multi-wavelength study of four barred galaxies using the archival data from optical, ultraviolet, infrared, CO, and HI imaging data on star formation progression and stellar and gas distribution to better understand the process of bar quenching. We found that for three galaxies, the region between the nuclear or central sub-kiloparsec region and the end of the bar (bar region) is devoid of neutral and molecular hydrogen. While the detected neutral hydrogen is very negligible, we note that molecular hydrogen is present abundantly in the nuclear or central sub-kiloparsec regions of all four galaxies. The bar co-rotation radius is also devoid of recent star formation for three out of four galaxies. One galaxy shows significant molecular hydrogen along the bar, which might mean that the gas is still being funnelled to the centre by the action of the stellar bar. Significant star formation is also present along the bar co-rotation radius of this galaxy. The study presented here supports a scenario in which gas redistribution as a result of the action of stellar bar clears the bar region of fuel for further star formation and eventually leads to star formation quenching in the bar region., Accepted for publication in A&A. We report successful design and fabrication of 4.5kV SiC charge-balanced MOSFET with R on,sp of 10 mΩ.cm2 at 25 °C (20% below SiC unipolar limit). This device implements a novel scalable drift layer architecture for a high voltage switch as an alternative solution to super-junction devices. We have characterized the CB MOSFETs from room temperature up to 175 °C and show successful double pulse switching at 2.8kV and J F =50 A/cm2. Total switching loss is 110mJ/cm2 at 25 °C and drops to 95mJ/cm2 at 125 °C.

SiC power devices have been found experimentally to burn out from heavy ion strikes with linear energy transfers as low as 2.0 MeV $\cdot $ cm2/mg. In this paper, to better understand the failure mechanisms, we study the single-event burnout (SEB) phenomenon using a unified physics model between heavy ion radiation transport and device response. High-fidelity radiation data, generated from a general purpose Monte Carlo N-particle transport code (MCNP6.2), were modeled using a double Gaussian function to take into account both the heavy ion and the delta ray contributions. SiC junction barrier Schottky (JBS) diodes underwent 3-D TCAD electrothermal simulations using the double Gaussian model. This model was compared against other heavy ion models to determine the behavior of the thermal response from a heavy ion strike. The results reveal that there is a more rapid thermal response from models using high-fidelity heavy ion radiation data than approximated models provided by TCAD simulators. Peak temperature results from high-voltage SiC JBS diodes, which agree with the experimental observation of SEBs in SiC power devices.

1200V SiC power MOSFETs of various cell geometries are modeled in Synopsis Inc. Sentaurus TCAD. The impact of cell geometry on switching loss is studied by comparing the turn-on and turn-off losses using refined calculation methods. Under optimum circuit conditions, two different novel unit cell designs each achieve lower switching losses than conventional designs. For all the designs, lossless turn-on is impossible but lossless turn-off is achievable under circuit and biasing conditions that produce sufficiently rapid gate slew.

Tabernaemontana divaricata (L.) R. Br. Ex Roem. & Schult (Apocynaceae) is an important indole alkaloid rich Indian medicinal plant with conophylline being a potential lead in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and obesity. Seasonal variations and extraction techniques are two major variables that play a crucial role in the extractive yield of phytochemical constituents. Till date, there are no reports on quantification of conophylline from the leaves of T. divaricata of Indian origin, and its variation due to season and extraction techniques. The present study reports for the first time, development and validation of a new HPTLC method for the quantification of conophylline. A resolved peak of conophylline was achieved in the chromatogram with mobile phase of chloroform: methanol (90:10% v/v), when developed on a 15 cm length TLC plate. Further, the leaf samples of T. divaricata were collected during the months of August, November, February and May, and subjected individually to different extraction techniques viz., ultrasonic extraction, hot percolation and cold maceration. A total of 12 alkaloid rich fractions were obtained, and the extractive value of conophylline was found to be highest in August sample, when subjected to ultrasonic extraction (35.57 mg per 1 g of alkaloid rich fraction). Pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity of the alkaloid rich fractions was in correlation to their respective conophylline content (Pearson’s r = −0.7152) with potent activity exhibited by August sample, that was obtained by ultrasonic extraction (IC50 = 7.86 μg/mL).

Magellanic Clouds are the nearby galaxies which are ideal to study the properties of metal poor stellar population. In this study, we explore the near-IR properties of optically identified classical Be stars in 19 star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. From an optically identified sample of 835 Be stars we obtained the J, H, K magnitudes of 389 stars from the IRSF MCPS catalog. Among these, 247 stars (36.4%) are found in 9 clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud and 142 stars (55.5%) in 10 clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud. After correcting for reddening, we studied their NIR properties in the (H – K) 0 vs (J – H) 0 diagram. We identified 14 stars with abnormally large near IR excesses, which were removed from the analysis, there by restricting our study to 355 classical Be stars. We propose an extended area in the near-IR (H - K) 0 vs (J - H) 0 diagram as the diagnostic location of Classical Be stars in the Magellanic Clouds. We identified 14 stars to have near-IR excess, higher than those seen in classical Be stars. From the analysis based on spectral energy distribution and luminosity estimate, we found that 8 candidate Be stars may be Herbig Ae/Be stars. We identified a new sample of 6 sgB[e] stars, which when added to the sparse existing sample of 15 sgB[e] stars in the Magellanic Clouds can provide insight to understand the evolutionary link between sgB[e] stars and Luminous Blue variables.

On August 27, 2013, during the Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) field mission, NASA's ER-2 research aircraft encountered a region of enhanced water vapor, extending over a depth of approximately 2 km and a minimum areal extent of 20,000 km2 in the stratosphere (375 K to 415 K potential temperature), south of the Great Lakes (42°N, 90°W). Water vapor mixing ratios in this plume, measured by the Harvard Water Vapor instrument, constitute the highest values recorded in situ at these potential temperatures and latitudes. An analysis of geostationary satellite imagery in combination with trajectory calculations links this water vapor enhancement to its source, a deep tropopause-penetrating convective storm system that developed over Minnesota 20 hours prior to the aircraft plume encounter. High resolution, ground-based radar data reveal that this system was comprised of multiple individual storms, each with convective turrets that extended to a maximum of ~4 km above the tropopause level for several hours. In situ water vapor data show that this storm system irreversibly delivered between 6.6 kt and 13.5 kt of water to the stratosphere. This constitutes a 20 – 25% increase in water vapor abundance in a column extending from 115 hP to 70 hPa over the plume area. Both in situ and satellite climatologies show a high frequency of localized water vapor enhancements over the central U.S. in summer, suggesting that deep convection can contribute to the stratospheric water budget over this region and season.

We present a comparative study of the electrical characteristics of different 1200V commercial SiC power MOSFETs at cryogenic temperatures down to 77 K. As compared to conventional silicon power MOSFETs, SiC MOSFETs show very different operating characteristics at low temperatures which is due to unique material and design parameters used in SiC MOSFETs. Of particular interest is a non-linear mixed triode/pentode-like I-V characteristic exhibited by all SiC MOSFETs at 77 K, which is demonstrated to be due to short channel effects in the constituent JFET.

Garcinia cambogia is one of the most commonly used anti-obesity dietary supplements, and hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is a major constituent in the commercial preparations of Garcinia. High doses of HCA are often consumed without much awareness of its pharmacokinetic and toxicokinetic parameters, and therefore, a complete understanding of its effects is lacking. The first step in understanding these parameters is the availability of a reliable bioanalytical method. Here, we present the first report on a UPLC-MS/MS method for analysis of HCA in rat plasma after a simplified and cost-effective protein precipitation. Chromatographic separation of the analytes in the supernatant was achieved using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography, where mass parameters were optimized and a rapid 5-min quantitative assay was developed. The method was highly sensitive, accurate, precise and linear in the concentration range of 10.5-5000 ng/mL (validated according to the United States Food and Drug Administration guidelines). Further, the method was successfully used to describe the pharmacokinetic profile of HCA in rat plasma after the administration of pure HCA and commercial Garcinia preparations.

In this study, we analyze the emission lines of different species present in 118 Galactic field classical Be stars in the wavelength range of 3800 - 9000 \AA. We re-estimated the extinction parameter (A$_V$) for our sample stars using the newly available data from Gaia DR2 and suggest that it is important to consider A$_V$ while measuring the Balmer decrement (i.e. $D_{34}$ and $D_{54}$) values in classical Be stars. Subsequently, we estimated the Balmer decrement values for 105 program stars and found that $\approx$ 20\% of them show $D_{34}$ $\geq$ 2.7, implying that their circumstellar disc are generally optically thick in nature. One program star, HD 60855 shows H$\alpha$ in absorption -- indicative of discless phase. From our analysis, we found that in classical Be stars, H$\alpha$ emission equivalent width values are mostly lower than 40 \AA, which agrees with that present in literature. Moreover, we noticed that a threshold value of $\sim$ 10 \AA~of H$\alpha$ emission equivalent width is necessary for Fe{\sc ii} emission to become visible. We also observed that emission line equivalent widths of H$\alpha$, P14, Fe{\sc ii} 5169 and O{\sc i} 8446 \AA~for our program stars tend to be more intense in earlier spectral types, peaking mostly near B1-B2. Furthermore, we explored various formation regions of Ca{\sc ii} emission lines around the circumstellar disc of classical Be stars. We suggest the possibility that Ca{\sc ii} triplet emission can originate either in the circumbinary disc or from the cooler outer regions of the disc, which might not be isothermal in nature., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

6 pags., 5 figs., Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), emitted from the oceans, is the most abundant biological source of sulfur to the marine atmosphere. Atmospheric DMS is oxidized to condensable products that form secondary aerosols that affect Earth’s radiative balance by scattering solar radiation and serving as cloud condensation nuclei. We report the atmospheric discovery of a previously unquantified DMS oxidation product, hydroperoxymethyl thioformate (HPMTF, HOOCH2SCHO), identified through global-scale airborne observations that demonstrate it to be a major reservoir of marine sulfur. Observationally constrained model results show that more than 30% of oceanic DMS emitted to the atmosphere forms HPMTF. Coincident particle measurements suggest a strong link between HPMTF concentration and new particle formation and growth. The Community Coordinated Modeling Center has been leading community‐wide space science and space weather model validation projects for many years. These efforts have been broadened and extended via the newly launched International Forum for Space Weather Modeling Capabilities Assessment (https://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov/assessment/). Its objective is to track space weather models' progress and performance over time, a capability that is critically needed in space weather operations and different user communities in general. The Space Radiation and Plasma Effects Working Team of the aforementioned International Forum works on one of the many focused evaluation topics and deals with five different subtopics (https://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov/assessment/topics/radiation-all.php) and varieties of particle populations: Surface Charging from tens of eV to 50‐keV electrons and internal charging due to energetic electrons from hundreds keV to several MeVs. Single‐event effects from solar energetic particles and galactic cosmic rays (several MeV to TeV), total dose due to accumulation of doses from electrons (>100 keV) and protons (>1 MeV) in a broad energy range, and radiation effects from solar energetic particles and galactic cosmic rays at aviation altitudes. A unique aspect of the Space Radiation and Plasma Effects focus area is that it bridges the space environments, engineering, and user communities. We describe a new method of identifying night-time clouds over the Pierre Auger Observatory using infrared data from the Imager instruments on the GOES-12 and GOES-13 satellites. We compare cloud. identifications resulting from our method to those obtained by the Central Laser Facility of the Auger Observatory. Using our new method we can now develop cloud probability maps for the 3000 km(2) of the Pierre Auger Observatory twice per hour with a spatial resolution of similar to 2.4 km by similar to 5.5 km. Our method could also be applied to monitor cloud cover for other ground-based observatories and for space-based observatories. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Obesity is the major leading cause of global mortality among metabolic disorders. Orlistat, a pancreatic lipase inhibitor, is the only approved drug of choice for the long term treatment of obesity. However, recent findings reported severe adverse effects with long term administration of orlistat. Plant-based natural products represent a vast reservoir of chemical entities that have the potential to treat various metabolic disorders. In the present study, we have performed a preliminary screening of local flora for pancreatic lipase inhibition assay, which highlighted the methanol extract of Tabernaemontana divaricata leaves (IC50 of 12.73 µg/mL). Molecular docking of the 38 alkaloids, reported from the leaves of T. divaricata, into the active site of pancreatic lipase led to the identification of furan bridged bis-indole alkaloids viz., Conophylline (1), Conophyllinine (2) and Conophyllidine (3) as potential leads, while Taberhanine (4), a monomeric indole alkaloid was found to exhibit comparatively poor docking score. Further, molecular docking analysis of the top three molecules (1–3) highlighted the importance of hydrophobic interactions of the dimeric extension with the lid domain of pancreatic lipase, which was not found with 4. Molecular dynamics simulations of 1–4 in complex with pancreatic lipase, further confirmed the docking results, wherein compound 4 was comparatively less stable (RMSD ≈ 1.5 A). Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of the alkaloid-rich fraction of T. divaricata leaves indicated the presence of 1, while 2–4 were found to be absent. Molecule 1 was tested for pancreatic lipase inhibition potential, where it exhibited potent IC50 of 3.31 µM, comparable to that of orlistat (IC50 of 0.99 µM). Enzyme kinetic studies validated the in silico analyses, wherein compound 1 exhibited a competitive reversible inhibition of pancreatic lipase. The present study identified the bis-indole alkaloids of T. divaricata leaves as a new class of potent pancreatic lipase inhibitors.

We evaluate and compare the performance and potential of GaAs and of wide and extreme bandgap semiconductors (SiC, GaN, Ga2O3, and diamond), relative to silicon, for power electronics applications. We examine their device structures and associated materials/process technologies and selectively review the recent experimental demonstrations of high voltage power devices and IC structures of these semiconductors. We discuss the technical obstacles that still need to be addressed and overcome before large-scale commercialization commences.

This paper presents current-controlled negative resistance (CCNR) phenomena observed in ultrahigh voltage (BV $\geq $ 10 kV) 4H silicon carbide implanted anode p-i-n rectifiers. CCNR under forward bias is believed to be caused by the presence of a thin layer under the anode with a low carrier lifetime, preventing efficient hole injection and leading to poor conductivity modulation of the drift layer.

Bidirectional power transistors are essential components of several power electronics systems, such as matrix converters. In this paper, we present the operating principles, design considerations, and experimental characteristics of a novel planar gate 4H-SiC bidirectional insulated gate bipolar transistors. The impact of various drift layer and unit cell parameters on blocking, on-state, and switching performance has been evaluated by using numerical simulations, and critical performance tradeoffs have been discussed. Based on the optimized design, devices were fabricated on lightly doped free-standing n-type 4H-SiC wafers. Fabricated devices showed good conductivity modulation, with a forward voltage drop of 9.7 V at 50 A/cm2 at room temperature, which increased to 11.5 V at 150 °C.

A series of twenty four 2-(carbazol-3-yl)-2-oxoacetamide analogues were synthesized, characterized and evaluated for their pancreatic lipase (PL) inhibitory activity. Porcine PL was used against 4-nitrophenyl butyrate (method A) and tributyrin (methods B and C) as substrates during the PL inhibition assay. Compounds 7e, 7f and 7p exhibited potential PL inhibitory activity (IC50 values of 6.31, 8.72 and 9.58μM, respectively in method A; and Xi50 of 21.85, 21.94 and 26.2, respectively in method B). Further, inhibition kinetics of 7e, 7f and 7p against PL, using method A, revealed their competitive nature of inhibition. A comparison of the inhibition profiles of the top three compounds in methods B and C, provided a preliminary idea of covalent bonding of the compounds with Ser 152 of PL. Molecular docking studies of the compounds 7a-x into the active site of human PL (PDB ID: 1LPB) was in agreement with the in vitro results, and highlighted probable covalent bond formation with Ser 152 apart from hydrophobic interactions with the lid domain. Molecular dynamics simulation of 7e complexed with PL, further confirmed the role of aromatic groups in stabilising the ligand (RMSD ⩽4A). The present study led to the identification of 2-(carbazol-3-yl)-2-oxoacetamide analogues 7a-x as a new class of potential PL inhibitors.

We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, bi-directional 4H-SiC planar gate, insulated gate bipolar transistors fabricated on 250- $\mu \text{m}$ thick, lightly doped free-standing substrates. On Si face, forward voltage drop (at 50 A/cm $^{2})$ of 9.7 V was obtained at room temperature, with a differential ON-resistance of 140 $\text{m}\Omega \cdot \text {cm}^{2}$ , indicating good conductivity modulation. We have also demonstrated control over minority carrier injection in static characteristics of the BD-IGBTs by application of a back-gate bias.

Cirrus clouds in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) and water vapor transported into the stratosphere have significant impacts on the global radiation budget and circulation patterns. Climate models, however, have large uncertainties in representing dehydration and cloud processes in the TTL, and thus their feedback on surface climate, prohibiting an accurate projection of future global and regional climate changes. Here we use unprecedented airborne measurements over the Pacific to reveal atmospheric waves as a strong modulator of ice clouds in the TTL. Wave-induced cold and/or cooling conditions are shown to exert a nearly ubiquitous influence on cirrus cloud occurrence at altitudes of 14–18 km, except when air was very recently influenced by convective hydration. We further observe that various vertical scales of cloud layers are associated with various vertical scales of waves, suggesting the importance of representing TTL waves in models.

We present initial dual spacecraft observations that for the first time both constrain the spatial scale size and provide spectral properties at medium energies of electron microbursts. We explore individual microburst events that occurred on 2 February 2015 using simultaneous observations made by the twin CubeSats which comprise the National Science Foundation (NSF) Focused Investigations of Relativistic Electron Bursts: Intensity, Range, and Dynamics (FIREBIRD II). During these microburst events, the two identically instrumented FIREBIRD II CubeSats were separated by as little as 11 km while traversing electron precipitation regions in low-Earth orbit. These coincident microburst events map to size scales >120 km at the equator. Given the prevalence of coincident and noncoincident events we conclude that this is of the same order of magnitude as that of the spatial scale size of electron microburst, an unknown property that is critical for quantifying their overall role in radiation belt dynamics. Finally, we present measurements of electron microbursts showing that precipitation often occurs simultaneously across a broad energy range spanning 200 keV to 1 MeV, a new form of empirical evidence that provides additional insights into the physics of microburst generation mechanisms.

In this paper we have investigated the effect of two key processing steps for the fabrication of 4H-SiC trench gate power MOSFETs, namely activation annealing and reactive ion etching on the MOS interface properties of a-face (11-20) 4H-SiC. By optimizing activation annealing conditions, high channel mobility (µfe) of 111 cm2/V.s, threshold voltage (VT) of 3.5V and subthreshold slope (S) of 194 mV/dec was obtained. However, after reactive ion etching (RIE) of the surface, µfe reduced to 81 cm2/V.s with increase in VT to 5V and S to 331 mV/dec. This is possibly due to increase in interface trap density from 1.8×1012 cm-2 to 3.3×1012 cm-2 after RIE treatment estimated from by MOS gated diode characteristics. Increased trap density contributes to higher coulombic scattering as indicated by the weaker temperature dependence of high field mobility in RIE etched sample.

Rumex nepalensis Spreng. (Polygonaceae) is an edible plant rich in anthraquinones, that significantly inhibits Pancreatic Lipase (PL), a key enzyme in the dietary fat digestion. The effectiveness of Ultrasonic Assisted Extraction (UAE) of R.nepalensis was investigated using ethyl acetate as a solvent. Further, optimization of extraction conditions required for maximizing the PL inhibitory activity was determined using response surface methodology with Box-Behnken Design (BBD with three factor, 17 experimental runs). Extraction time (A, min), solid: solvent ratio (B, g/mL) and temperature (C, °C) were selected as the variables. The optimum conditions were established as extraction time (37 min), solid: solvent ratio (1:10.5) and extraction temperature 33 °C. However, till date, no HPTLC reports are available for the simultaneous quantification of chrysophanol and physcion from R. nepalensis. Thus, chrysophanol and physcion were quantified in various extractives of R. nepalensis via. a validated HPTLC method and a positive correlation were obtained with PL inhibition activity (Pearson’s r = 0.801 and 0.755 for chrysophanol and physcion respectively), that justified the PL inhibition potential of R. nepalensis derived anthraquinones.

The present study makes use of the unprecedented capability of the Gaia mission to obtain the stellar parameters such as distance, age, and mass of HAeBe stars. The accuracy of Gaia DR2 astrometry is demonstrated from the comparison of the Gaia DR2 distances of 131 HAeBe stars with the previously estimated values from the literature. This is one of the initial studies to estimate the age and mass of a confirmed sample of HAeBe stars using both the photometry and distance from the Gaia mission. Mass accretion rates are calculated from $H\alpha$ line flux measurements of 106 HAeBe stars. Since we used distances and the stellar masses derived from the Gaia DR2 data in the calculation of mass accretion rate, our estimates are more accurate than previous studies. The mass accretion rate is found to decay exponentially with age, from which we estimated a disk dissipation timescale of $1.9\pm 0.1$ Myr. Mass accretion rate and stellar mass exhibits a power law relation of the form, $\dot{M}_{acc}$ $\propto$ $M_{*}^{2.8\pm0.2}$. A series of indolyl oxoacetamide analogs was synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for their pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity using porcine pancreatic lipase (type II) and 4-nitrophenyl butyrate. Compound 8d exhibited a potent inhibition, with an IC50 value of 4.53 µM, followed by 8c (IC50 = 5.12 µM), compared with the standard drug, orlistat (IC50 = 0.99 µM). Furthermore, analogs 8c and 8d exhibited a reversible competitive inhibition, similar to orlistat. Molecular docking studies of the compounds 7a-f and 8a-f were in agreement with the in vitro results, wherein 8d exhibited a potential MolDock score of -163.052 kcal/mol. A 10-ns molecular dynamics simulation of 8d complexed with pancreatic lipase confirmed the role of π-π stacking and π-cation interactions with the lid domain and Arg 256, respectively, in stabilizing the ligand at the active site (maximum observed root mean square deviation ≈ 2 A). The present study led to the identification of novel indolyl oxoacetamides (8a-d) as potential pancreatic lipase inhibitory leads that might further result in enhanced potency through lead optimization.

The JEM-EUSO (Joint Experiment Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory) program aims at developing Ultra-Violet (UV) fluorescence telescopes for efficient detections of Extensive Air Showers (EASs) induced by Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) from satellite orbit. In order to demonstrate key technologies for JEM-EUSO, we constructed the EUSO-Balloon instrument that consists of a ∼1 m 2 refractive telescope with two Fresnel lenses and an array of multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes at the focus. Distinguishing it from the former balloon-borne experiments, EUSO-Balloon has the capabilities of single photon counting with a gate time of 2.3 µs and of imaging with a total of 2304 pixels. As a pathfinder mission, the instrument was launched for an 8 h stratospheric flight on a moonless night in August 2014 over Timmins, Canada. In this work, we analyze the count rates over ∼2.5 h intervals. The measurements are of diffuse light, e.g. of airglow emission, back-scattered from the Earth's atmosphere as well as artificial light sources. Count rates from such diffuse light are a background for EAS detections in future missions and relevant factor for the analysis of EAS events. We also obtain the geographical distribution of the count rates over a ∼780 km 2 area along the balloon trajectory. In developed areas, light sources such as the airport, mines, and factories are clearly identified. This demonstrates the correct location of signals that will be required for the EAS analysis in future missions. Although a precise determination of count rates is relevant for the existing instruments, the absolute intensity of diffuse light is deduced for the limited conditions by assuming spectra models and considering simulations of the instrument response. The Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) is designed to observe cosmic neutrinos (CNs) above 20 PeV and ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) above 20 EeV over the full sky. The POEMMA mission calls for two identical satellites flying in loose formation, each comprised of a 4-meter wide field-of-view (45 degrees) Schmidt photometer. The hybrid focal surface includes a fast (1 ${\mu}$s) ultraviolet camera for fluorescence observations and an ultrafast (10 ns) optical camera for Cherenkov observations. We propose and report on the performance projection of high-voltage, quasi-lateral diamond power MOSFETs with numerical simulations. The novel diamond MOSFET utilizes a lateral 2 dimensional hole gas (2DHG) channel, an extended lateral drift region for voltage blocking and vertical metal vias to connect to the backside metal. Evaluated specific on-resistance (RON,sp) of 3.3 kV, 5 kV and 10 kV rating devices are 2.8 mΩ-cm2, 4.7 mΩ-cm2 and 23.7 mΩ-cm2, which are 1.3×, 1.6× and 1.9× lower than gallium nitride vertical device 1D Ron,sp limit at the same breakdown voltage (BV). Simulated BVs are 4.2 kV, 5.6 kV and 11.1 kV, respectively, contributed by the source-connected field plates which spread out the electric field distribution.

Schottky-pn diodes (SPNDs) have been proposed as a novel solution allowing high current density in the lightly-doped drift regions of diamond and other semiconductors where shallow doping is difficult. Here we show, using simulations, that while SPNDs may have applications in low voltage diamond devices, development of high voltage devices is precluded by space-charge limited conduction physics inherent to the SPND structure at high current densities. For designed blocking voltages above 1000 V, simulations indicate that SPNDs are dramatically outperformed by properly designed conventional Schottky diodes.

The physical processes related to the effect of bar in the quenching of star formation in the region between the nuclear/central sub-kpc region and the ends of the bar (bar-region) of spiral galaxies is not fully understood. It is hypothesized that the bar can either stabilize the gas against collapse, inhibiting star formation or efficiently consume all the available gas, with no fuel for further star formation. We present a multi-wavelength study using the archival data of an early-type barred spiral galaxy, Messier 95, which shows signatures of suppressed star formation in the bar-region. Using the optical, ultraviolet, infrared, CO and HI imaging data we study the pattern of star formation progression, stellar/gas distribution and try to provide insights on the process responsible for the observed pattern. The FUV$-$NUV pixel colour map reveals a cavity devoid of UV flux in the bar-region that interestingly matches with the length of the bar ($\sim$ 4.2kpc). The central nuclear region of the galaxy is showing a blue color clump and along the major-axis of the stellar bar the colour progressively becomes redder. Based on a comparison to single stellar population models, we show that the region of galaxy along the major-axis of the bar (unlike the region outside the bar) is comprised of stellar populations with ages $\geq$ 350 Myr, with a star-forming clump in the center of younger ages ($\sim$ 150Myr). Interestingly the bar-region is also devoid of neutral and molecular hydrogen but with an abundant molecular hydrogen present at the nuclear region of the galaxy. Our results are consistent with a picture in which the stellar bar in Messier 95 is redistributing the gas by funneling gas inflows to nuclear region, thus making the bar-region devoid of fuel for star formation., Accepted for publication in A&A letter to the editor
