In the present paper, we have studied the dependence of thermal conductivity on shape, size and dimension of nanomaterial. By using the quantitative expression of melting temperature, the expression for thermal conductivity is deduced in this work. Kapitza resistance term is also considered in the study to better explain the thermal conductivity variation in nanomaterials with scattering effect on thermal properties. The thermal conductivity is found to decreased as size of nanomaterials decease. The variation in thermal conductivity with size is calculated for nanowire, nanofilm, spherical, regular tetrahedral particle, regular octahedral particle, and regular icosahedral particle shapes. The results calculated in the present work are compared with the available experimental results to judge the validity of the present model.

Abrasive flow jet machining (ASJM) is modern manufacturing technique which uses comparatively low-pressure abrasive flow jet for machining various machined surfaces like holes, channels and intricate shapes which is not possible from conventional machining processes. The effect of abrasive particle concentration on the impacting slurry velocity on the surface was examined in the present CFD simulation, resulting in target surface erosion. To predict the impact velocity of abrasive particles hitting the surface, a 2D CFD model was used. The depth of machined surface, surface irregularity and surface removal rate at normal incidence mainly depend on the KE of particle, impact angle, etc. in line with previously published research work on highly pressurised air and water driven abrasive jet. In the present work CFD simulation is performed to predict the effect of solid particle concentration on the impacting slurry jet velocity at the target surface and also turbulence kinetic energy near the surface is studied. As per the CFD results the simulation model predictions the velocity of impacting particle goes on decreasing due to internal frictional resistance between solid and liquid phase and it shows scope of further parametric analysis in this area.

The microstructure of primary Mg 2 Si and the interface of Mg 2 Si / α -Mg modified by Sn and Sb elements in an as-cast Mg-5Sn-2Si-1.5Al-1Zn-0.8Sb (wt.%) alloy were investigated. In the primary Mg 2 Si phase not only the Si atoms but also the Mg atoms could be substituted by Sn and Sb atoms, resulting in the slightly reduced lattice constant a of 0.627 nm. An OR of Mg 2 Si phase and α -Mg in the form of [ 001 ] Mg 2 Si ∥ [ 01 1 ¯ 1 ] α , ( 220 ) Mg 2 Si ∥ ( 0 1 ¯ 12 ) α was discovered. Between primary Mg 2 Si phase and α -Mg matrix two transitional nano-particle layers were formed. In the rim region of primary Mg 2 Si particle, Mg 2 Sn precipitates sizing from 5 nm to 50 nm were observed. Adjacent to the boundary of primary Mg 2 Si particle, luxuriant columnar crystals of primary Mg 2 Sn phase with width of about 25 nm and length of about 100 nm were distributed on the α -Mg matrix. The lattice constant of the Mg 2 Sn precipitate in primary Mg 2 Si particle was about 0.756 nm. Three ORs between Mg 2 Sn and Mg 2 Si were found, in which the Mg 2 Sn precipitates had strong bonding interfaces with Mg 2 Si phase. Three new minor ORs between Mg 2 Sn phase and α -Mg were found. The lattice constant of primary Mg 2 Sn phase was enlarged to 0.813 nm owing to the solution of Sn and Sb atoms. Primary Mg 2 Sn had edge-to-edge interfaces with α -Mg. Therefore, the primary Mg 2 Si particle and α -Mg were united and the interfacial adhesion was improved by the two nano-particles layers of Mg 2 Sn phase.

Lead (Pb) is one of the most paradoxical elements, both having diverse practical uses, as well as being extremely toxic to humans, and especially to children. The use of Pb records a steady growth with annual production currently exceeding 10 million metric tons. In spite of the environmental awareness of modern society, humans are still exposed to Pb through its emission by smelting and mining activities, and also by Pb-bearing mine wastes and soils. Here, we review the chemical and mineralogical forms of Pb generated from smelting and mining processes and subsequently altered in tailings, slag piles, and soils. In smelter plumes, Pb is emitted to the atmosphere either in the form of smaller nano-size particulate matter (PM) often associated with S, or larger micrometer Pb-bearing PM matter accompanied by oxide-silicate matrices. Pb-bearing phases in mine tailings and impacted soils depict a greater mineralogical and chemical complexity than those emitted from smelters and the larger particle size of this PM also leads to a lower Pb bioavailability. High resolution observations in aquatic system, soils and rock coatings impacted by smelting and mining activities show the presence of Pb-bearing phosphates, sulfides, sulfates, carbonates, and oxide nanoparticles. Larger micrometer size particles of Pb-bearing minerals form often through the aggregation of Pb-bearing nanoparticles, a process commonly referred to as crystallization through particle attachment. Mobilization of Pb within soil columns is strongly affected by the transport of colloids, especially those composed of organic matter and Fe-hydroxides because Pb is taken up efficiently by these two soil components. The extraordinary variability and complexities of all of these processes suggest that future reduction of Pb contamination in the environment and its impact on human health mainly depends on eliminating or greatly reducing Pb-release from smelting operations and tailings impoundments.

This article focused on the emission probability of the grey particles with black particles emitted in the interaction of 84Kr (as a projectile) having incident kinetic energy 1 GeV per nucleon with nuclear emulsion detector (as target detector). This study show that the emission probability of grey particles is depending on the number of emitted black particles.

Ferrite Cobalt (CoFe2O4) is a recognized attractive material with normal implementation and normal size of polarization. It has unmistakable substance security and motorized hardness. It is an eager promoter for the strategy of tactile gadgets and actuators, as an authoritative fixing, attractive medication gadgets electrical and having a broad scope of researching in materialistic innovation or science for mechanical uses and applications. These nanoparticles cobalt and ferrite on an ensnared viably handled on surrounding temperature by a basic process of co-precipitation. This precious stone structures and architecture of image was controlled through X-ray diffraction and SEM. The range of XRD affirms that composite nano-particles were shaped by ideal structure of spinel. This normal pace of precious stones was controlled through methods for Modified Scherer (54 nm) and Williamson-Hall (49 nm) techniques. A SEM view demonstrated nanoparticles CoFe2O4 being assembled in close-by structures. This visual and bond highlights was depicted by FTIR and UV–Vis Spectrum. As the temperature of the production rises, so does the magnetics period for the NPs and the magnetization of the concentration improves monotonously from 2.6 μB to 16 μB plus from 37 to 66 emu/g. According to the actions of both SPM and attendance of a dead layer (surface amorphous shell layer), which systemically decreases as the synthesis temperature increases, the optimum curve-appropriate of M-H statistics is due to the reduced particle/particle interaction.

In this manuscript we have focused on the shower particle characteristics produced at relativistics energy. We have also investigated the inequality of the shower particles emitted out of the interactivity of the projectiles with discrete target nuclei of the emulsion detector. In this investigation we have remarked that as we move to heavier target nuclei the release probability of shower particles is increases.

Triaxial experiments were conducted on granular materials presenting uniform, graded and fractal particle distributions in order to investigate how the broadness of the distribution affects the phenomenon of strain localisation. The shear band thickness evolution is assessed by digital image correlation (DIC) using three cameras placed at different angles around a transparent triaxial cell. From the field of deformation, Gaussian distributions have made it possible to fit the data satisfactorily and determine the shear band width evolution. The latter exhibits a rapid decrease in the softening regime until a residual value is reached in all cases. In the conditions of the experiments, it is shown that the residual shear band thickness scales with the mean grain size and the ratio between the two increases with the broadness of the distribution. Samples with uniform distribution exhibit an average residual thickness of ∼ 10D50, samples with graded distribution exhibit an average residual thickness of ∼ 12·5D50 and samples with fractal distribution exhibit an average residual thickness of ∼ 17D50.

Poor ductility is the primary concern of magnesium matrix composites (MMCs) inflicted by non-deformable ceramic particle reinforcements. Metal particles which melt at elevated temperature can be used as reinforcement to improve the deformation characteristics. Ti-6Al-4V particles reinforced AZ31 MMCs were produced through friction stir processing (FSP) which was carried out in a traditional vertical milling machine. The microstructural features as well as the response to external tensile load were explored. A homogenous distribution of Ti-6Al-4V was achieved at every part of the stir zone. There was no chemical decomposition of Ti-6Al-4V. Further, Ti-6Al-4V did not react with Al and Zn present in AZ31 alloy to form new compounds. A continuous strong interface was obtained around Ti-6Al-4V particle with the matrix. Ti-6Al-4V particles underwent breakage during processing due to severe plastic strain. There was a remarkable refinement of grains in the composite caused by dynamic recrystallization in addition to the pinning of smaller size broken particles. Dense dislocations were observed in the matrix because of plastic deformation and the associated strain misfit. Ti-6Al-4V particles improved the tensile behavior and assisted to obtain appreciable deformation before fracture. Brittle mode of failure was avoided.

The development of hypersonic precooled combined cycle engine provides a reliable power system for the future intercontinental navigation and reusable space orbital transportation. The compact heat exchanger precooler is the key component of the cooling cycle system, which provides efficient heat management for the hypersonic engine. This investigation mainly focused on the manufacturing process of precooler, and the typical structure of the precooler, ultrathin-walled capillary structure, was facilitated by the vacuum brazing using the particle reinforced composite filler alloy. The effects of different types and contents of the reinforced particle on the spreading behaviour, microstructural evolution, mechanical performance changes were investigated in detail. During the cooling process, the nucleation and growth of the γ-Ni solid solution on the surface of the reinforced particles was the main reason for the microstructure homogenization. Compared to the Ni particles, the more obvious mechanical properties improvement could be achieved by using IN718 particles reinforced composite filler alloy. The tensile strength and elongation of the brazed ultrathin-walled structure present 9.36% and 47.27% higher than that using initial filler alloy. Moreover, the micro-hardness distribution result revealed that the reinforced particles reduced the overall micro-hardness of the brazed region, dispersed the eutectic structure and increased the hardness dispersion, which would reduce the stress concentration tendency and improve the structural properties.

Cold spray is an attractive and rapidly developing process for additive manufacturing with high efficiency and precision, repairing and coating, especially in aircraft and aerospace applications. Cold spray additive manufacturing deposits micro-particles with large plastic deformation below their melting point, eliminating heat effect zone which could deteriorate the quality of repairing zone. The particle deposition in cold spray is a complex process which involves high strain rate, high contact pressure and high temperature. Here we develop, utilize and validate a thermo-mechanical model to provide a definitive way to predict deposition mechanics and surface deformation evolution for particle deposition process in cold spray additive manufacturing. Both a single particle and dual particles models were developed to investigate the contact interaction between particle/substrate and particle/particle. Different combinations of particle/substrate materials (Cu/Cu, Al/Al, steel/steel, and nickel/nickel) and process parameters were considered in this study. The experimental study was conducted to validate simulation results, providing useful information for understanding the limitations and challenges associated with cold spray additive manufacturing. The framework provides insights into improving the quality and precision of stress/strain formation, particle interactions and particle deposition in cold spray additive manufacturing process.

Geological disasters such as slope failure and landslides can cause loss of life and property. Therefore, reproducing their evolution process is of great importance for risk assessment and mitigation. The recently developed SIMSAND critical state sand model combined with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is adopted in this work to study slope failure under large deformations. To illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the SIMSAND-SPH approach, a series of slope collapse studies using the discrete element method (DEM) considering various particle shapes (i.e. spherical, tetrahedral and elongated) is adopted as benchmarks. The parameters of the SIMSAND model are calibrated using DEM triaxial tests. In comparison to the DEM simulations, the runout distance and final slope height are well characterized with the SIMSAND-SPH approach with less computational cost. All comparisons show that the SIMSAND-SPH approach is highly efficient and accurate, which can be an alternative numerical tool to simulate real scale granular flow.

The integrity and regularity of pore morphology play an important role in determining the mechanical properties of the metallic foam materials. The conventional methods on refining pore morphology are mainly focused on the optimization of fabrication techniques, however, they are usually inconvenient and complicated. Recently, incorporating nano reinforcement is considered to be a suitable way to fabricate metallic composite foams accompanied by optimized pore morphology and enhanced mechanical properties. In this work, through a facile and rapid powder metallurgy foaming method, the aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) alloy composite foams reinforced by graphene nanosheets (GNSs) are successfully fabricated. The microstructure analyses reveal that, for the Al-Si alloy foams incorporating the GNSs (GNSs/Al-Si composite foams), the pore size is transformed to be smaller, the pore size distributions become more homogeneous and the pore shape is also refined to a regular and roundish state. Meanwhile, the shape of Si precipitates is found transforming from an irregular long strip (length of ~20 μm, width of ~5 μm) to a fine particle state (diameter of ~5 μm). Moreover, the compressive testing results show that, the 0.4 wt% GNSs/Al-Si composite foams own the optimal compression stress of 11.7 ± 0.5 MPa, plateau stress of 10.0 ± 1.0 MPa and energy absorption capacity of 6.8 ± 0.7 MJ/m3, which have improvement of 58.1%, 53.8% and 51.1% in comparison with the Al-Si alloy foams counterpart, respectively. The present findings may pave a new way for developing new generation of metallic composite foams that with stable microstructure and excellent mechanical performance.

An extensive literature review shows a lack of comprehensive research work regarding the distribution of poly-disperse solids in Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. In this investigation, the efficiency of a coaxial reactor (a high rotational speed central axial-flow impeller and a low speed wall-scrapping anchor impeller) in distributing the poly-disperse particles in water (Newtonian) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solutions (non-Newtonian) was assessed employing a flow-visualization methodology (electrical resistance tomography). The solids hold-up profiles were measured by making use of the tomograms. The critical rotational speed of a central stirrer in achieving the just suspension state for various operating conditions was determined via measuring the particle bed height. The extent of axial distribution of poly-disperse particles was characterized utilizing the data from tomography measurement. The effects of some key variables such as poly-disperse ratio, impeller rotational mode, and CMC loading on the distribution of poly-disperse particles in coaxial agitated systems were extensively analyzed. The capability of the coaxial impellers in distributing the poly-disperse solids in water and CMC solutions was compared to that with a traditional single agitator. Overall, an improved level of distribution of poly-disperse particles in water and CMC solutions was obtained at lower power usage employing the coaxial impellers.

Hydroxyapatite (HAP), which is chemically represented as (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), is one of the main inorganic material of vertebrate bone and teeth. The bioceramic material is used as a substitute for deficient bone tissue because of its similarities to crystallographic and chemical composition of teeth and bone. HAP is extensively used in various biomedical applications because of its excellent properties, such as bioactivity, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, non-immunogenicity and osteoconductivity. In this work, hydroxyapatite powder was synthesized using polyoxyethylene lauryl ether (Briji-35) as a surfactant and dimethyl sulfoxide as a primary surfactant through microemulsion method. The obtained products were characterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM. The result indicated that, the Briji-35 played an important role for the formation of nano-hydroxyapatite particle with good crystallinity and particles with uniform morphology besides controlling the particle size of nano-HAP. The biomedical application studies of the as-synthesised material are yet to be studied.

A thorough understanding of chemical composition, particle pH, and pollutant emissions is essential to address the climate and human health effects of atmospheric particles. In this study, we used a High-Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) to characterize the composition of submicron particles. Moreover, we applied the ISORROPIA-II model to analyze the particle acidity effect on the compositional characterization of submicron particles from December 22, 2016 to January 7, 2017 in Albany, New York, USA. The results indicated that aerosols with mobility diameter from SMPS in the range 200–400 nm were the main contributors to the mass during the measurement period. The dominance of organics (47%) and sulfate (16%) was similar to previous observations in the eastern United States in Winter 2015, while the fraction of nitrate (23%) was much higher. Moreover, nitrate could easily form at colder temperatures and lower RH levels even when there were more acidic particle periods during the measurement period in Albany. The ISORROPIA-II model indicated that there were more acidic particles, which was estimated using pH values. Lower temperature conditions tended to favor nitrate formation. The nitrate concentration exceeded that of sulfate in the measurement period, even though the SO2 and NOx emissions were similar. The organics in submicron particles were strongly influenced by the local emissions in winter. However, the inorganic compounds in submicron particles could be derived from regional transport as their pollution sources originated from different directions. This may help strategize emission reductions in the future.

A new method was proposed for the evaluation of the efficiency of microwave heating asphalt mixtures and the influences of density and particle sizes of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Temperature distributions of asphalt mixtures with density of 1.35 and 2.02 t/m3 and particle size ranges of 3–6, 6–9.5, and 9.5–13.2 mm along the direction of microwave propagation were experimentally evaluated and the results obtained for the efficiency of microwave heating RAP with different densities and particle sizes were compared based on the proposed method. Also, increase of the particle size of RAP with basalt aggregates higher ability of microwave absorption.

Cu nanowires covered by Ag particles is studied for potential applications in the next-generation microelectronics. To date, the deformation mechanism in the Cu Ag core-particle is not clear. Here, molecular dynamics simulation is used to describe the Cu Ag core-particle system. The results show that the equilibrium structure of Ag particles is reconstructed, when the particle ≤1.0 nm. At low temperature (1 K) indicate that three different deformation processes take part in the core-particle structure, depending on the size of Ag particles. When the particle diameter ≤2.0 nm, the prevailing deformation mechanism is the emission of dislocations from the Cu surface. For the particle diameters ranging from 3.0 to 6.0 nm, the emission of misfit dislocations from the Ag Cu interface is the dominant deformation mechanism. If the Ag particle ≥6.0 nm, the deformation mechanism can be characterized by the slip band, consisting of the dislocations and amorphous atoms. For elevated temperatures (2–400 K), the mechanical properties of the Ag Cu core-shell system are nearly independent of temperature, whereas the structure with particles larger than 2.0 nm showed a strong dependence of its mechanical properties on temperature. Based on the results, the diameter-temperature plastic deformation map is proposed.

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] is an excellent bio-ceramic material for artificial bone substitution in biomedical field owing to its chemical and crystallographic similarities of natural bone and teeth. In this research work, we have attempted the synthesis of hydroxyapatite powders with controllable size in the presence of three different surfactants sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) which is an anionic surfactant, cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a cationic surfactant and poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) as a non-ionic surfactant. The as-synthesised HAP powders were characterised by analytical techniques such as FTIR, XRD and SEM. The results have shown that the non-ionic surfactant is a better choice for developing this bio-nanomaterial due to its good dispersing power than CTAB and SDS. The results have also indicated that, nano-hydroxyapatite particle has a uniform morphology, well crystallinity and the particle size was controlled with the use of non-ionic surfactant. The crystallite size was calculated using Scherer’s formula. Experiments were performed under controlled environment by maintaining the required pH, concentration and temperature. The biomedical application studies of the as-synthesised material are yet to be studied.

Borehole tube sampling is a key process of geotechnical engineering. The paper presents numerical analyses of smooth tube sampling in clay using the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM). The soil is described by a conventional elasto-plastic constitutive model (Tresca plasticity and a quasi-incompressible elastic law). The sampler is advanced by several diameters into the soil until a steady state is observed. The elasto-plastic numerical solution for a round-tipped sampler clearly identifies a localized shear failure mechanism at the entrance of the tube. Relevant Strain Path Method (SPM) solutions are numerically evaluated to facilitate full field comparison. For a given thickness ratio elasto-plastic simulation predicts far less compression but much larger extensions at the centerline than SPM. The results also show how including a beveled sampler tip or a stationary piston changes the failure mechanism and significantly reduces induced peak extension strains. The results agree with available experimental data and well-established empirical observations. The methodology presented may open the way to a soil mechanics based rational approach to soil sampling simulation. Gap graded concrete, also known as pervious concrete, or enhanced concrete, is a storm water drainage replacement. Pervious or porous concrete is a homogeneous mixture of cement, fine aggregates to some percent, coarse aggregate and admixtures with partial substitutes of fine aggregate. The particle sizes and proportions of the materials used indicate the value and permeability of this form of concrete. We addressed the strength parameters and permeability of this concrete with various aggregate sizes in this paper. The 70:30 coarse aggregate mix ratio is used. Two coarse aggregate mixes of 20–10 mm and 10–6 mm were used in this study for the different aggregate ratios. The larger the aggregate, the better the porosity for rainwater runoff and storage. To achieve better performance, 15% fly ash is used as a substitute for cement in the mix design in the experiments. The water binder ratio is kept constant at 0.38, while the cement to aggregate ratio is set at 1:5. The porous concrete moulds are cast and tested for mechanical and toughness properties. For the above-mentioned tests, cubes, tubes, and beams are casted.

We investigate the microphysics of contrail formation behind commercial aircraft by means of the particle-based LCM (Lagrangian Cloud Module) box model. We extend the original LCM to cover the basic pathway of contrail formation on soot particles being activated into liquid droplets that soon after freeze into ice crystals. In our particle-based microphysical approach, simulation particles are used to represent different particle types (soot, droplets, ice crystals) and properties (mass/radius, number). The box model is applied in two frameworks. In the classical framework, we prescribe the dilution along one average trajectory in a single box model run. In the second framework, we perform a large ensemble of box model runs using 25 000 different trajectories inside an expanding exhaust jet as simulated by the LES (large-eddy simulation) model FLUDILES. In the ensemble runs, we see a strong radial dependence of the temperature and relative humidity evolution. Droplet formation on soot particles happens first near the plume edge and a few tenths of a second later in the plume centre. Averaging over the ensemble runs, the number of formed droplets and ice crystals increases more smoothly over time than for the single box model run with the average dilution. Consistent with previous studies, contrail ice crystal number varies strongly with atmospheric parameters like temperature and relative humidity near the contrail formation threshold. Close to this threshold, the apparent ice number emission index (product of freezing fraction and soot number emission index) strongly depends on the geometric-mean dry core radius and the hygroscopicity parameter of soot particles. The freezing fraction of soot particles slightly decreases with increasing soot particle number, particularly for higher soot number emissions. This weakens the increase of the apparent ice number emission index with rising soot number emission index. Comparison with box model results of a recent contrail formation study by Lewellen (2020) (using similar microphysics) shows a later onset of our contrail formation due to a weaker prescribed plume dilution. If we use the same dilution data, our evolution and Lewellen's evolution in contrail ice nucleation show an excellent agreement cross-verifying both microphysics implementations. This means that differences in contrail properties mainly result from different representations of the plume mixing and not from the microphysical modelling. Using an ensemble mean framework instead of a single trajectory does not necessarily lead to an improved scientific outcome. Contrail ice crystal numbers tend to be overestimated since the interaction between the different trajectories is not considered. The presented aerosol and microphysics scheme describing contrail formation is of intermediate complexity and thus suited to be incorporated in an LES model for 3D contrail formation studies explicitly simulating the jet expansion. Our box model results will help interpret the upcoming, more complex 3D results.

Micrometre-sized electrode materials have distinct advantages for battery applications in terms of energy density, processability, safety and cost. For the silicon monoxide anode that undergoes electrochemical alloying reaction with Li, the Li (de)intercalation by micron-sized active particles usually accompanies with a large volume variation, which pulverizes the particle structure and leads to rapidly faded storage performance. In this work, we proposed to stabilize the electrochemistry vs. Li of the micron-SiOx anode by forming a rigid-flexible bi-layer coating on the particle surface. The coating consists of pyrolysis carbon as the inner layer and polydopamine as the outer layer. While the inner layer guarantees high structural rigidity at particle surface and provides efficient pathway for electron conduction, the outer layer shows high flexibility for maintaining the integrity of micrometre-sized particles against drastic volume variation, and together they facilitate formation of stable solid electrolyte interface on the SiOx particles. A composite anode prepared by mixing the coated micron-SiOx with graphite delivered improved Li storage performance, and promised a high-capacity, long-life LiFePO4/SiOx-graphite pouch cell. Our strategy provides a general and feasible solution for building high-energy rechargeable batteries from micrometre-sized electrode materials with significant volume variation.

This paper presents a new sampling head design and the method used to evaluate it. The elemental composition of aerosols collected by two different sampling devices in a semi-arid region of Tunisia is compared by means of compositional perturbation vectors and biplots. This set of underused mathematical tools belongs to a family of statistics created specifically to deal with compositional data. The two sampling devices operate at a flow rate in the range of 1 m3 h−1, with a cut-off diameter of 10 µm. The first device is a low-cost laboratory-made system, where the largest particles are removed by gravitational settling in a vertical tube. This new system will be compared to the second device, a brand-new standard commercial PM10 sampling head, where size segregation is achieved by particle impaction on a metal surface. A total of 44 elements (including rare earth elements, REEs, together with Al, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, S, Sc, Se, Sr, Ti, Tl, U, V, Zn, and Zr) were analysed in 16 paired samples, collected during a 2-week field campaign in Tunisian dry lands, close to source areas, with high levels of large particles. The contrasting meteorological conditions encountered during the field campaign allowed a broad range of aerosol compositions to be collected, with very different aerosol mass concentrations. The compositional data analysis (CoDA) tools show that no compositional differences were observed between samples collected simultaneously by the two devices. The mass concentration of the particles collected was estimated through chemical analysis. Results for the two sampling devices were very similar to those obtained from an online aerosol weighing system, TEOM (tapered element oscillating microbalance), installed next to them. These results suggest that the commercial PM10 impactor head can therefore be replaced by the decanter, without any measurable bias, for the determination of chemical composition and for further assessment of PM10 concentrations in source regions.

The use of biofuels helps mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Earlier studies have shown that transporting biomass in horizontal pipelines in the form of water-based slurries significantly reduces transportation costs. The frictional behaviour of water-based chopped wheat straw slurry in a vertical pipeline has not been studied and this is the focus of this study. In situ concentrations of water-based conventional solids of medium sand, glass beads, and fine sand and straw slurry flows were determined by measuring their delivered concentrations in pseudo-homogeneous regimes for prepared concentrations of 1–6% (dry volume of conventional solids) and 5–25% (saturated mass of straw), respectively. Two grades of sand and glass beads with mean particle diameters of 0.103, 0.447, and 0.5 mm, respectively, and straw with a nominal particle length of 19.2 mm were utilised. The delivered concentrations for the straw slurries and fine sand were close to their corresponding prepared concentrations and were homogeneous. There was a large discrepancy between prepared and delivered concentrations for the medium-sized sand and glass beads slurries. The pressure drop of straw slurries over the range of velocities of 0.5–4.2 m s−1 and mass concentrations of 5–25% through the vertical pipe showed a maximum drag reduction of 19% at a concentration of 25% (mass) and at a 3.5 m s−1 velocity. For concentrations of 5–20% (mass), the straw slurries showed drag-reducing capabilities in the mixed and turbulent flow regions for various velocities that were different from horizontal flows.

Al-V-B master alloy is promising for refining Al-Si alloys, yet its optimal composition with superior efficacy remains to be explored. In this work, the evolution of refining phases in the Al-10Si/Al-V-B system with different V:B ratios was evaluated by thermodynamic calculations, based on which the Al-V-B refiners with V:B = 1:1 and 5:1 were designed. Refining trails demonstrated that they could significantly reduce the grain size of Al-10Si (wt.%) alloy from 1736 to 184–245 μm with industrial addition amount. Detailed examinations results clarify that when V:B ratio is 1:1 the nucleation particle is (V,Al)B2, which has a VB2-AlB2 core-shell structure and therefore presents the nucleation capability as AlB2 particle. When V:B ratio is as high as 5:1, the nucleation particle is pure VB2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that (0 0 0 1) VB2/(1 1 1) α-Al interface has the lowest interfacial energy such that highest nucleation potency among other types of diboride/α-Al interfaces under consideration. The outcomes of this work provide fundamental guidance to develop superior V-B based refiners for Al-Si alloys.

Rapid, inexpensive, and laboratory-free diagnostic of viral pathogens is highly critical in controlling viral pandemics. In recent years, nanopore-based sensors have been employed to detect, identify, and classify virus particles. By tracing ionic current containing target molecules across nano-scale pores, nanopore sensors can recognize the target molecules at the single-molecule level. In the case of viruses, they enable discrimination of individual viruses and obtaining important information on the physical and chemical properties of viral particles. Despite classical benchtop virus detection methods, such as amplification techniques (e.g., PCR) or immunological assays (e.g., ELISA), that are mainly laboratory-based, expensive and time-consuming, nanopore-based sensing methods can enable low-cost and real-time point-of-care (PoC) and point-of-need (PoN) monitoring of target viruses. This review discusses the limitations of classical virus detection methods in PoN virus monitoring and then provides a comprehensive overview of nanopore sensing technology and its emerging applications in quantifying virus particles and classifying virus sub-types. Afterward, it discusses the recent progress in the field of nanopore sensing, including integrating nanopore sensors with microfabrication technology, microfluidics and artificial intelligence, which have been demonstrated to be promising in developing the next generation of low-cost and portable biosensors for the sensitive recognition of viruses and emerging pathogens.

Summary During olefin polymerization on supported catalysts, the controlled morphological evolution of the catalyst particle is vital for ensuring optimal product properties and high catalyst activity. We employed non-destructive hard X-ray holotomography to quantitatively assess the 3D morphology of multiple silica-supported hafnocene-based catalyst particles during the early stages of gas-phase ethylene polymerization. Image processing and pore network modeling revealed clear variations in the dimensions and interconnectivity of pristine particles' macropore networks. This, together with apparent differences in the fragmentation behavior of pre-polymerized particles, suggests that the reactivity and morphological evolution of individual particles are largely dictated by their unique support and pore space architectures. By minimizing the structural heterogeneity among pristine catalyst particles, more uniform particle morphologies may be obtained. Significant polymerization activity, observed in the particles' interiors, further implies that appropriate polymerization conditions and catalyst kinetics can guarantee sufficiently high particle accessibilities and thus more homogeneous support fragmentation.

Mie-Gans theory optically characterizes ellipsoidal and by extension generally elongated nonchiral metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and is ubiquitous in verifying experimental results and predicting particle behavior. Recently, elongated chiral MNPs have garnered enthusiasm, but a theory to characterize their chiroptical behavior is lacking in the literature. In this Letter, we present an ab initio model for chiral ellipsoidal MNPs to address this shortcoming and demonstrate that it reduces to the general Mie-Gans model under nonchiral conditions, produces results that concur with state-of-the-art numerical simulations, and can accurately replicate recent experimental measurements. Furthermore, to gain physical insights, we analyze factors such as background medium permittivity and particle size that drive the chiroptical activity using two types of plasmonic chiral MNPs. We also demonstrate the utility of our model in metamaterial design. Generic features of our model can be extended to characterize similar elongated chiral MNPs, fueling many other variants of the current model.

The importance of PEG architecture on nanoparticle (NP) functionality is known but still difficult to investigate, especially at a single particle level. Here, we apply DNA Point Accumulation for Imaging in Nanoscale Topography (DNA-PAINT), a super-resolution microscopy (SRM) technique, to study the surface functionality in poly(lactide-co-glycolide)–poly(ethylene glycol) (PLGA–PEG) NPs with different PEG structures. We demonstrated how the length of the PEG spacer can influence the accessibility of surface chemical functionality, highlighting the importance of SRM techniques to support the rational design of functionalized NPs., The importance of PEG architecture on nanoparticle (NP) functionality is known but still difficult to investigate. Here, DNA-PAINT and qPAINT are used to quantify this phenomenon at a single particle and molecular level.

This is an integrated experimental and theoretical study of the dynamics and rheology of self-crosslinked, slightly charged, temperature responsive soft Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) microgels over a wide range of concentration and temperature spanning the sharp change in particle size and intermolecular interactions across the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Dramatic, non-monotonic changes in viscoelasticity are observed with temperature, with distinctive concentration dependences in the dense fluid, glassy, and soft-jammed states. Motivated by our experimental observations, we formulate a minimalistic model for the size dependence of a single microgel particle and the change of interparticle interaction from purely repulsive to attractive upon heating. Using microscopic equilibrium and time-dependent statistical mechanical theories, theoretical predictions are quantitatively compared with experimental measurements of the shear modulus. Good agreement is found for the nonmonotonic temperature behavior that originates as a consequence of the competition between reduced microgel packing fraction and increasing interpar-ticle attractions. Testable predictions are made for nonlinear rheological properties such as the yield stress and strain. Scanning probe microscopy offers real space atomic and nanoscale imaging of surfaces and supported nanoparticles, and these techniques are used in a planar catalyst model system context to analyze important atomic-scale aspects of nanoparticle structure, particle edges, defects, vacancies and to image the resulting interaction of individual reactants with the active surfaces. Here we review applications of high-resolution scanning probe microscopy to hydroprocessing catalysis, to demonstrate how these atom-resolved imaging techniques have recently advanced to become tools that elucidate the catalytically active edge structures of metal sulfide hydrotreating catalyst, resolve the intramolecular structure of complex hydrocarbons, and provide atomic-scale information on the mechanisms in which heteroatom-bearing hydrocarbons interact with a catalyst particle. This mini-review addresses the advantages of scanning tunneling microscopy for studies of planar model systems relevant for hydroprocessing catalysis, including the emerging use of near-ambient pressure (operando) scanning tunneling microscopy together with examples of the use of low-temperature molecular imaging with non-contact atomic force microscopy.

A unique data set derived from remote sensing, airborne, and ground-based in situ measurements is presented. This measurement report highlights the known complexity of comparing multiple aerosol optical parameters examined with different approaches considering different states of humidification and atmospheric aerosol concentrations. Mie-theory-based modeled aerosol optical properties are compared with the respective results of airborne and ground-based in situ measurements and remote sensing (lidar and photometer) performed at the rural central European observatory at Melpitz, Germany. Calculated extinction-to-backscatter ratios (lidar ratios) were in the range of previously reported values. However, the lidar ratio is a function of the aerosol type and the relative humidity. The particle lidar ratio (LR) dependence on relative humidity was quantified and followed the trend found in previous studies. We present a fit function for the lidar wavelengths of 355, 532, and 1064 nm with an underlying equation of fLR(RH, γ(λ))=fLR(RH=0,λ)×(1-RH)-γ(λ), with the derived estimates of γ(355 nm) = 0.29 (±0.01), γ(532 nm) = 0.48 (±0.01), and γ(1064 nm) = 0.31 (±0.01) for central European aerosol. This parameterization might be used in the data analysis of elastic-backscatter lidar observations or lidar-ratio-based aerosol typing efforts. Our study shows that the used aerosol model could reproduce the in situ measurements of the aerosol particle light extinction coefficients (measured at dry conditions) within 13 %. Although the model reproduced the in situ measured aerosol particle light absorption coefficients within a reasonable range, we identified many sources for significant uncertainties in the simulations, such as the unknown aerosol mixing state, brown carbon (organic material) fraction, and the unknown aerosol mixing state wavelength-dependent refractive index. The modeled ambient-state aerosol particle light extinction and backscatter coefficients were smaller than the measured ones. However, depending on the prevailing aerosol conditions, an overlap of the uncertainty ranges of both approaches was achieved.

Crop residue open burning is an important emission source of ambient particles in China. This study analyzed the particle emission characteristics of crop residue open burning through combustion experiments with a novel open combustion simulation device using three typical crop straws in north China (corn, wheat, and rice). Particle samples size ranging from 0.006–9.890 µm were collected by an Electrical Low Pressure Impactor plus, a high size-resolution instrument capable of dividing particles into 14 size stages. The size distributions of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble ions, and elements were analyzed, and source chemical profiles were constructed for PM0.1, PM1, PM2.5, and PM10. The number concentration of particles was concentrated in the Aiken nuclei mode (0.006–0.054 µm), accounting for 75% of the total number, whereas the mass concentration was concentrated in the accumulation mode (0.054–0.949 µm), accounting for 85.43% of the mass loading. OC, EC, Cl−, and K(include total K and water-soluble K) were the major chemical components of the particles, whose mass percentage distributions differed from those of other components. These five main components exhibited a bell-shaped size distribution in the 0.006–9.890 µm range, whereas the other components exhibited a U-shaped distribution. Among the chemical profiles for PM0.1–PM10, OC was the most important component at 10–30%, followed by EC at 2%–8%. The proportions of K+, Cl−, and K varied substantially in different experimental groups, ranging from 0–15%, and K+ and Cl− were significantly correlated (r = 0.878, α = 0.000).

This work reports numerical explorations in advection of one passive tracer by point vortices living in the unbounded plane. The main objective is to find the energy-optimal displacement of one passive particle (point vortex with zero circulation) surrounded by N point vortices. The direct formulation of the corresponding control problems is presented. The restrictions are due to (i) the ordinary differential equations that govern the displacement of the passive particle around the point vortices, (ii) the available time T to go from the initial position z0 to the final destination zf, and (iii) the maximum absolute value umax that is imposed on the control variables. The latter consist in staircase controls, i.e., the control is written as a finite linear combination of characteristic functions on the real interval. The resulting optimization problems are solved numerically. The transport of macromolecules and nanoscopic particles to a target cellular site is a crucial aspect in many physiological processes. This directional motion is generally controlled via active mechanical and chemical processes. Here we show, by means of molecular dynamics simulations and an analytical theory, that completely passive nanoparticles can exhibit directional motion when embedded in non-uniform mechanical environments. Specifically, we study the motion of a passive nanoparticle adhering to a mechanically non-uniform elastic membrane. We observe a non-monotonic affinity of the particle to the membrane as a function of the membrane’s rigidity, which results in the particle transport. This transport can be both up or down the rigidity gradient, depending on the absolute values of the rigidities that the gradient spans across. We conclude that rigidity gradients can be used to direct average motion of passive macromolecules and nanoparticles on deformable membranes, resulting in the preferential accumulation of the macromolecules in regions of certain mechanical properties.

Colloidal supraparticles are micron-scale spherical assemblies of uniform primary particles, which exhibit emergent properties of a colloidal crystal, yet exist as a dispersible powder. A prerequisite to utilize these emergent functionalities is that the supraparticles maintain their mechanical integrity upon the mechanical impacts that are likely to occur during processing. Understanding how the internal structure relates to the resultant mechanical properties of a supraparticle is therefore of general interest. Here, we take the example of supraparticles templated from water/fluorinated oil emulsions in droplet-based microfluidics and explore the effect of surfactants on their mechanical properties. Stable emulsions can be generated by nonionic block copolymers consisting of a hydrophilic and fluorophilic block and anionic fluorosurfactants widely available under the brand name Krytox. The supraparticles formed in the presence of both types of surfactants appear structurally similar, but differ greatly in their mechanical properties. While the nonionic surfactant induces superior mechanical stability and ductile fracture behavior, the anionic Krytox surfactant leads to weak supraparticles with brittle fracture. We complement this macroscopic picture with Brillouin light spectroscopy that is very sensitive to the interparticle contacts for subnanometer-thick adsorbed layers atop of the nanoparticle. While the anionic Krytox does not significantly affect the interparticle bonds, the amphiphilic nonionic surfactant drastically strengthens these bonds to the point that individual particle vibrations are not resolved in the experimental spectrum. Our results demonstrate that seemingly subtle changes in the physicochemical properties of supraparticles can drastically impact the resultant mechanical properties.

The acidity of atmospheric particulate matter regulates its mass, composition, and toxicity and has important consequences for public health, ecosystems and climate. Despite these broad impacts, the global distribution and evolution of aerosol particle acidity are unknown. We used the comprehensive atmospheric multiphase chemistry–climate model EMAC (ECHAM5/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry) to investigate the main factors that control aerosol particle acidity and uncovered remarkable variability and unexpected trends during the past 50 years in different parts of the world. Aerosol particle acidity decreased strongly over Europe and North America during the past decades while at the same time it increased over Asia. Our simulations revealed that these particle acidity trends are strongly related to changes in the phase partitioning of nitric acid, production of sulfate in aqueous aerosols, and the aerosol hygroscopicity. It is remarkable that the aerosol hygroscopicity (κ) has increased in many regions following the particle pH. Overall, we find that alkaline compounds, notably ammonium and to a lesser extent crustal cations, regulate the particle pH on a global scale. Given the importance of aerosol particles for the atmospheric energy budget, cloud formation, pollutant deposition, and public health, alkaline species hold the key to control strategies for air quality and climate change.

New insights have been gained into chemical transformations occurring in the initial stages of aerosol-assisted sol–gel (AASG) synthesis of catalysts. This has been achieved through the combined application of optical trapping and Raman spectroscopy. AASG is an emerging technology in catalyst manufacturing that presents numerous advantages over conventional approaches, including the ability to access unique catalyst morphologies. However, the processes occurring during synthesis are largely inferred from bulk-phase analyses due to challenges in conducting in situ or operando measurements on moving aerosols within a flow tube. Herein, these obstacles are overcome through Raman spectroscopic interrogation of a single aerosol droplet constrained within an optical trap, which acts as a direct analogue for a particle moving along a flow tube. These studies represent the first operando investigations of AASG synthesis. The synthesis of Ni/Al2O3 catalysts has been studied, with spectroscopic interrogation conducted on each component of the precursor synthesis solution, where possible, up to and including a mixture containing all components necessary for catalyst synthesis. Raman spectroscopy confirms the formation of stable self-assembled macrostructures within the aerosol and provides direct insights into the reaction mechanisms. Crucially, evidence was obtained allowing alternative reaction pathways to be postulated within the confined environment of an aerosol droplet in comparison to bulk-phase syntheses. In aerosols where nickel was not present, but contained all other components, isothermal room-temperature studies showed the formation of stable but unreactive droplets of ∼1 μm, which were proposed to contain micelle-type structures. Upon heating, initial gelation transformations were seen to be achieved at temperatures higher than ∼56 °C. Notably, little loss of spectral intensity corresponding to the C–H stretch (ethanol) was observed from the heated aerosol, implying that evaporation is not a prerequisite for the reaction. When nickel is present in the synthesis solution reactive transformations occur at room temperature, proposed to result in a continuous Al–O–Ni–NO3 structure; a more rapid transformation takes place at elevated temperatures. These results provide the first direct evidence of the processes occurring within aerosols during AASG and shed new light on the mechanistic understanding of this technology. This therefore facilitates the design of new synthetic approaches and hence the production of catalysts and other materials with enhanced properties.

This work uses synchrotron X-ray tomography to quantify the role of the particle shape on the interaction between collective comminution and individual grain fracture. Two sands (subrounded Ottawa and subangular Q-ROK#2) were compressed beyond their comminution pressure and imaged at the microscale. An algorithm was developed to track the sequence of breakage events stemming from compression, as well as the evolving morphology of the resulting fragments. The results show that the degree of grain shape evolution depends on the initial morphology of the particles, with subrounded particles exhibiting the most severe shape alterations. However, it was found that at high compressive stress all morphological indices approach similar values. Such a tendency is achieved when crushing involves primarily the finer grain fractions – that is, when cushioning hinders the rupture of larger particles. A quantitative assessment of the mode of particle failure also revealed that in both sands comminution (i.e. the pervasive fragmentation of individual particles) was not achieved abruptly, but was rather attained by way of successive stages of splitting and chipping. These findings suggest that in crushable granular solids the initial grain shape plays a key role during the first stages of compression leading to yielding, but its influence tends to vanish at higher pressures, when cushioning mitigates the impact of initial morphological differences and hinders further major breakage.

Thermal residual stress and strain (TRSS) in particle reinforced metal matrix composites (PRMMCs) are believed to cause strengthening effects, according to previous studies. Here, the representative volume element (RVE) based computational homogenization technique was used to study the tensile deformation of PRMMCs with different particle aspect ratios (AR). The influence of TRSS was assessed quantitatively via comparing simulations with or without the cooling process. It was found that the strengthening effect of TRSS was affected by the particle AR. With the average strengthening effect of TRSS, a fast method of introducing the strengthening effect of TRSS to the tensile behavior of PRMMCs was developed. The new method has reduced the computational cost by a factor 2. The effect of TRSS on continuous fiber-reinforced metal matrix composite was found to have a softening-effect during the entire tensile deformation process because of the pre-yield effect caused by the cooling process.

The chain-like prior particle boundaries (PPBs) as a kind of stubborn harmful precipitate will hinder atomic diffusion and particle connection. They can only be broken into nanoscale through thermal deformation (1160–1200 °C). Here, treated by the pulsed electric current at 800 °C, PPBs were dissolved quickly as a result of the interaction between the pulsed electric current and the chain-like structure. According to the electromigration theory and the calculation results, the high current density regions will be mainly produced at the gaps due to the conductivity difference between the precipitates and the matrix. The atomic diffusion flux caused by the pulsed electric current is proportional to the current density. Therefore, the existence of a large number of gaps in the chain-like PPBs will make the high current density regions play a more positive role in fast-dissolution.

The moving particle semi-implicit method (MPS) is a well-known Lagrange method that offers advantageous in addressing complex fluid problems, but particle distribution is an area that requires refinement. For this study, a particle smoothing algorithm was developed and incorporated into the weakly compressible MPS (sWC-MPS). From the definition and derivation of basic MPS operators, uniform particle distribution is critical to numerical accuracy. Within the framework of sWC-MPS, numerical operators were modified by implementing coordinate transformation and smoothing algorithm. Modifying numerical operators significantly improved particle clustering, smoothed pressure distributions, and reduced pressure oscillations. To validate the numerical feasibility of the method, several cases were numerically simulated to compare sWC-MPS to the weakly compressible MPS (WC-MPS): a pre-defined two-dimensional (2-D) analytical function, Poiseuille's flow, Taylor Green vortex, and dam break. The results showed a reduction of errors caused by irregular particle distribution with lower particle clustering and smaller pressure oscillation. In addition, a larger Courant number, which represents a larger time step, was tested. The results showed that the new sWC-MPS algorithm achieves numerical accuracy even using a larger Courant number, indicating improved computational efficiency.

The correlation between depassivation and repassivation processes, which is significant in erosion-corrosion, was quantitatively investigated by single particle impingement tests at various flow velocities and impact angles. The results show that both repassivation and depassivation processes are associated with the kinetic energy of solid particle, and demonstrate that the repassivation is retarded by depassivation. This phenomenon probably results from the depassivation-induced microstructure evolution. On this basis, the dependence of critical flow velocity (CFV) for erosion-corrosion on the solid particle concentration and diameter is further theoretically predicted and experimentally verified. Accordingly, the crucial role of depassivation-repassivation in CFV phenomenon is further highlighted.

This study presents the first full annual cycle (2019–2020) of ambient surface aerosol particle number concentration measurements (condensation nuclei > 20 nm, N20) collected at Summit Station (Summit), in the centre of the Greenland Ice Sheet (72.58∘ N, −38.45∘ E; 3250 ma.s.l.). The mean surface concentration in 2019 was 129 cm−3, with the 6 h mean ranging between 1 and 1441 cm−3. The highest monthly mean concentrations occurred during the late spring and summer, with the minimum concentrations occurring in February (mean: 18 cm−3). High-N20 events are linked to anomalous anticyclonic circulation over Greenland and the descent of free-tropospheric aerosol down to the surface, whereas low-N20 events are linked to anomalous cyclonic circulation over south-east Greenland that drives upslope flow and enhances precipitation en route to Summit. Fog strongly affects particle number concentrations, on average reducing N20 by 20 % during the first 3 h of fog formation. Extremely-low-N20 events (< 10 cm−3) occur in all seasons, and we suggest that fog, and potentially cloud formation, can be limited by low aerosol particle concentrations over central Greenland.

Hypereutectic Al-Si-Cu coatings were prepared by supersonic atmospheric plasma spraying to enhance the surface performance of lightweight alloys. To find out optimum process conditions and achieve desirable coatings, this work focuses on the influence of three important parameters (in-flight particle temperature, impact velocity, and substrate temperature) on the collected splats morphology, coatings microstructure and microhardness. Results show that appropriate combinations of temperature and velocity of in-flight particles cannot only completely melt hypereutectic Al-Si-Cu particles, especially the primary Si phase, but also provide the particles with sufficient kinetic energy. Thus, the optimized coating consists of 98.6 % of fully-melted region with nanosized coupled eutectic and 0.9 % of porosity. Increasing the substrate deposition temperature promotes the transition from inhomogeneous banded microstructure to homogeneous equiaxed microstructure with a lower porosity level. The observations are further interpreted by a newly developed phase-change heat transfer model on quantitatively revealing the solidification and remelting behaviors of several splats deposited on substrate. Besides, phase evolutions including the formation of supersaturated α-Al matrix solid solution, growth of Si and Al2Cu phases at different process conditions are elaborated. An ideal microstructure (low fractions of unmelted/partially-melted regions and defects) together with solid solution, grain refinement, and second phase strengthening effects contributes to the enhanced microhardness of coating. This integrated study not only provides a framework for optimizing Al-Si based coatings via thermal spraying but also gives valuable insights into the formation mechanisms of this class of coating materials.

In the current study, the settling, interaction, drafting, kissing, and tumbling of two identical and non-identical circular particles were simulated in a two-dimensional box in shear-thinning, Newtonian, and shear-thickening fluids by using the combined lattice Boltzmann-smoothed profile methods. Furthermore, the drag coefficient of one particle settling for different power-law indexes and Archimedes numbers was calculated. Also, the effect of the diameter ratio of the two particle pairs was considered during settling. The developed method was validated by simulating the settling of one particle and two identical particles in a Newtonian fluid. To consider two non-identical particles, two cases were examined. In Case A, the larger particle was above the smaller one and in the Case B, the smaller particle was above the larger one. The results showed that the two non-identical particles were separated more easily than the identical ones. In the settling of two particles under the same Archimedes number, the drafting and kissing time considerably increased by changing the non-Newtonian fluid behavior from a shear-thinning one to a shear-thickening one. Also, when the larger particle was above the smaller one, the time duration of the kissing stage increased with the decrease in the diameter ratio.

We study the convergence of the method of reflections for the Stokes equations in domains perforated by countably many spherical particles with boundary conditions typical for the suspension of rigid particles. We prove that a relaxed version of the method is always convergent in H ˙ 1 under a mild separation condition on the particles. Moreover, we prove optimal convergence rates of the method in W ˙ 1 , q , 1 q ∞ and in L ∞ in terms of the particle volume fraction under a stronger separation condition of the particles.

Femtosecond laser induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) are excellent biomimetic iridescent antireflective interfaces. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility to develop tunable iridescent antireflective surfaces via simultaneous synthesis of functional metal-oxide nanomaterials, in situ deposition and hierarchical LIPSSs nanostructuring by means of femtosecond laser ablation (fs-LA) of tungsten (W) and molybdenum (Mo) in air. Adjusting the scanning interval from 1 μm to 20 μm allows the modulation of particle deposition rates on LIPSSs. Diminishing the scan interval enables a higher particle deposition rate, which facilitates the development of better UV-to-MIR ultrabroadband antireflective surfaces with a less pronounced iridescence. Through comparing the reflectance of hierarchical LIPSSs with different densities of loosely/tightly deposited particles, it is found that the deposited WOx and MoOx particle aggregates have high UV-to-MIR ultrabroadband absorbance, especially extraordinary in the MIR range. Loosely deposited particles which self-assembly into macroporous structures outperform tightly deposited particles for ultrabroadband antireflective applications. The presence of loosely deposited MoOx and WOx particle absorbers can cause up to 80 % and 60 % enhancement of antireflectance performances as compared to the tightly particle deposited LIPSSs samples. One stone of “fs-LA technique” with three birds of (particle generation, in situ deposition and LIPSS hierarchical nanostructuring) presented in this work opens up new opportunities to tune the reflectance and iridescence of metallic surfaces.
