Exogenous potassium (K + ) and endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) synergistically alleviate drought stress through regulating H + -ATPase activity, sugar metabolism and redox homoeostasis in tomato seedlings . Present work evaluates the role of K+ in the regulation of endogenous H2S signaling in modulating the tolerance of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. Mill.) seedlings to drought stress. The findings reveal that exposure of seedlings to 15% (w/v) polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG) led to a substantial decrease in leaf K+ content which was associated with reduced H+-ATPase activity. Treatment with sodium orthovanadate (SOV, PM H+-ATPase inhibitor) and tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA, K+ channel blocker) suggests that exogenous K+ stimulated H+-ATPase activity that further regulated endogenous K+ content in tomato seedlings subjected to drought stress. Moreover, reduction in H+-ATPase activity by hypotaurine (HT; H2S scavenger) substantiates the role of endogenous H2S in the regulation of H+-ATPase activity. Elevation in endogenous K+ content enhanced the biosynthesis of H2S through enhancing the synthesis of cysteine, the H2S precursor. Synergistic action of H2S and K+ effectively neutralized drought stress by regulating sugar metabolism and redox homoeostasis that resulted in osmotic adjustment, as witnessed by reduced water loss, and improved hydration level of the stressed seedlings. The integrative role of endogenous H2S in K+ homeostasis was validated using HT and TEA which weakened the protection against drought stress induced impairments. In conclusion, exogenous K+ and endogenous H2S regulate H+-ATPase activity which plays a decisive role in the maintenance of endogenous K+ homeostasis. Thus, present work reveals that K+ and H2S crosstalk is essential for modulation of drought stress tolerance in tomato seedlings.

In this study, 130 uniform ‘Flame Seedless’ grape trees were selected for and subjected to the same cultural practices. The trees were sprayed three times, before flowering, during full bloom, and three weeks later with the following treatments: control (water only), 250, 500, and 750 ppm glycine; 50, 100, and 150 ppm folic acid (FA); 2%, 4%, and 6% leaf moringa aqueous extract (MLAE); and their combinations. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of moringa leaf aqueous extract (MLAE) showed the presence of the phenolic compounds ellagic acid, vanillic acid, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, catechol, and gallic acid with values of 54.18, 18.79, 14, 12.32, and 12.12 mg/100 g, respectively. The obtained results showed that the foliar spraying of 250, 500, and 750 ppm glycine, 4% and 6% MLAE, and their combinations of glycine 500 ppm + FA 100 ppm + MLAE 4% and glycine 750 ppm + FA 150 ppm + MLAE 6% significantly increased the shoot length, shoot thickness, leaf chlorophyll content, yield, and fruit quality over the control. Glycine at 750 ppm was the best treatment followed by glycine at 500 ppm compared with the other applied treatments and the control in both experimental seasons.

Present investigation reports the role of calcium (Ca2+) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) crosstalk associated with Vigna radiata seedlings subjected to K+ deficient conditions under short-term (24 h) and long-term (72 h) NaCl stress. Perusal of the data reveals that under short-term NaCl stress an initial decline in K+ level led to the elevation in Ca2+ and H2S levels along with improvement in antioxidant system and reduction in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Under long-term NaCl stress a further decline in K+ content was deleterious that led to a lower K+/Na+ ratio. This was followed by reduction in antioxidant system along with excessive accumulation of ROS and methylglyoxal content, and increased membrane damage. However, supplementation of the seedling roots with Ca2+ enhanced biosynthesis of H2S through enhancing cysteine pool. The present findings suggest that synergistic action of Ca2+ and H2S induced the activity of H+-ATPase that created H+ gradient which in turn induced Na+/H+ antiport system that accelerated K+ influx and Na+ efflux. All of these together contributed to a higher K+/Na+ ratio, activation of antioxidative defense system, and maintenance of redox homeostasis and membrane integrity in Ca2+-supplemented stressed seedlings. Role of Ca2+ and H2S in the regulation of Na+/H+ antiport system was validated by the use of sodium orthovanadate (plasma membrane H+-ATPase inhibitor), tetraethylammonium chloride (K+ channel blocker), and amiloride (Na+/H+ antiporter inhibitor). Application of Ca2+-chelator EGTA (ethylene glycol-bis(b-aminoethylether)-N,N,Nʹ,Nʹ-tetraacetic acid) and H2S scavenger hypotaurine abolished the effect of Ca2+, suggesting the involvement of Ca2+ and H2S in the alleviation of NaCl stress. Moreover, use of EGTA and HT also substantiates the downstream functioning of H2S during Ca2+-mediated regulation of plant adaptive responses to NaCl stress. To sum up, present findings reveal the association of Ca2+ and H2S signaling in the regulation of ion homeostasis and antioxidant defense during K+-deficient NaCl stress.

In Egypt, water shortage has become a key limiting factor for agriculture. Water-deficit stress causes different morphological, physiological, and biochemical impacts on plants. Two field experiments were carried out at Etay El-Baroud Station, El-Beheira Governorate, Agriculture Research Center (ARC), Egypt, to evaluate the effect of potassium silicate (K-silicate) of maize productivity and water use efficiency (WUE). A split-plot system in the four replications was used under three irrigation intervals during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Whereas 10, 15, and 20 days irrigation intervals were allocated in main plots, while the three foliar application treatments of K-silicate (one spray at 40 days after sowing; two sprays at 40 and 60 days; and three sprays at 40, 60, and 80 days, and a control (water spray) were distributed in the subplots. All the treatments were distributed in 4 replicates. The results indicated that irrigation every 15 days gave the highest yield in both components and quality. The highly significant of (WUE) under irrigation every 20 days. Foliar spraying of K-silicate three times resulted in the highest yield. Even under water-deficit stress, irrigation every fifteen days combined with foliar application of K-silicate three times achieved the highest values of grain yield and its components. These results show that K-silicate treatment can increase WUE and produce high grain yield requiring less irrigation.

The acute toxicity from volatile toxin from the Limonia acidissima (La-VO) was evaluated on the mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Screening of La-VO showed five major bioactive compounds with a major peak estragole. The mortality rate was significantly greater at 150 ppm La-VO. The lethal concentration (LC50) was observed at 65.24 ppm. Sub-lethal dosage of La-VO resulted in significant changes in developmental times. Enzymatic profile of larvae post treatment showed upregulation of CYP450 and GST levels. A maximum repellent activity was observed at 75 ppm La-VO at 98% up to 210 minutes. The La-VO provided evidence of insecticidal and toxicity to the mosquito.

Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum L.) is an important vegetable crop that belongs to the family Solanaceae. Root-knot nematodes reflect the highly critical economically damaging genera of phytoparasitic nematodes on tomato plants. In this study, the eco-nematicide activity of freshwater green macroalga Cladophora glomerata aqueous extract and their synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) against root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne javanica was investigated on tomato plants. The formation and chemical structure of Ag-NPs was examined. The aqueous extract from C. glomerata was applied against the root-knot nematodes besides the biosynthesized green silver nanoparticles with 100, 75, 50, and 25% (S, S/2, S/3, S/4) concentrations. To investigate the plant response toward the Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles (GSNPs) treatment, expression profiling of Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase (PAL), Poly Phenol Oxidase (PPO), and Peroxidase (POX) in tomato were examined using Quantitative Real-Time PCR (Q-PCR). The results indicated that GSNPs from C. glomerata exhibited the highest eco-nematicide activity in the laboratory bioassay on egg hatchability and juveniles (J2S) mortality of M. javanica compared with the chemical commercial nematicide Rugby 60%. Also, results showed a significant reduction in galls number, egg masses, females per root system/plant, and mortality of juveniles. The results of PAL and PPO enzyme expression for the control plants remained relatively stable, while the plant inoculated with nematode M. javanica as well as the activity of genes in scope was increased from 14 to 28 Days after Nematode Inoculation (DANI). These activities were improved in inoculated plants and treated with C. glomerata extract and their green syntheses of Ag-NPs and the other plants treated with Rugby 60% (4 mL/L). The greatest activities of the three enzymes were evident after 14 days after the nematode inoculation. It can be concluded that the green synthesized nanoparticles using C. glomerata could be used as potent nematicides against M. javanica which induces the immune system to defend against nematode infection.

Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), versatile signaling molecules, play multiple roles in plant growth, physiological and biochemical processes under heavy metal stress. However, the mechanisms through which NO in association with endogenous H2S mediated hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) toxicity mitigation are still not fully understood. Therefore, we investigated the role of NO and H2S in sulfur (S)-assimilation and the effect of NO on endogenous H2S, and cysteine (Cys) biosynthesis and maintenance of cellular glutathione (GSH) pool in tomato seedlings under Cr(VI) stress. Cr(VI) toxicity caused an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS; O2•- and H2O2) formation and activity of chlorophyll (Chl) degrading enzyme [Chlorophyllase (Chlase)] and decrease in seedlings growth attributes, Chl a and b content, and activity of Chl synthesizing enzyme [δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (δ-ALAD)], gas exchange parameters, S-assimilation, and Cys and H2S metabolism. An increase in the content of glycinebetaine (GB), total soluble carbohydrates (TSCs) and total phenols (TPls), and decrease in DNA damage and ROS in NO treated seedlings conferred Cr(VI) toxicity tolerance. Under Cr(VI) toxicity conditions, the inclusion of H2S scavenger hypotaurine (HT) in growth medium containing NO validated the role of endogenous H2S in S-assimilation, H2S and Cys and GSH metabolism by withdrawing activity of enzymes involved in S-assimilation [adenosine 5-phosphosulfatereductase (APS-R), ATP-sulfurylase (ATP-S)], in the biosynthesis of H2S [L-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-CD) and D-cysteine desulfhydrase (D-CD)], Cys [O-acetylserin (thiol) lyase (OAST-L)], and GSH [glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS) and glutathione synthetase (GS)], and in antioxidant system. On the other hand, application of cPTIO [2-(4-32 carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide], a NO scavenger and HT diminished the effect of NO on internal H2S levels, Cys and glutathione homeostasis, and S-assimilation, which resulted in poor immunity against oxidative stress induced by Cr(VI) toxicity. The obtained results postulate that NO-induced internal H2S conferred tolerance of tomato seedlings to Cr(VI) toxicity and maintained better photosynthesis process and plant growth.

Nitric oxide (NO), a signaling molecule with diverse physiological functions, improves immunity of the plant against different environmental stresses. Heavy metal stress-induced structural and functional damages in cells are common consequences. Seed germination and seedlings development are crucial phases in the life cycle of a plant. The present experiment was designed to investigate how NO suppresses hexavalent chromium Cr(VI)-provoked impairment in the key processes during seed germination and seedlings development of tomato. This study reports that Cr(VI) stress significantly impaired seed germination attributes and the activity of hydrolyzing enzymes, such as α-amylase (α-A) and protease (Pr). However, exogenous NO donor sodium nitroprusside substantially improved seed germination parameters and upregulation of α-A and Pr. Furthermore, NO improved the content of nitrogen (N), NO, and proline (Pro), and modulated the activity of enzymes involved in Pro and N-assimilation. Under Cr(VI) toxicity conditions, NO improved the content of metal ligation compounds (non-protein thiols and total thiols), ascorbate and glutathione (GSH), and maintained higher content of GSH in glutathione pool (GSH:GSSG) and suppressed the formation of 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal and protein carbonylation, and electrolyte leakage. It may be concluded that NO improved the activity of hydrolyzing and Pro and N-metabolism enzymes. Application of NO also enhanced non-enzymatic antioxidants, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity under Cr(VI) toxicity conditions, thereby improved enhanced seed germination and seedlings vigor.

Our experiment was conducted during the seasons of 2018 and 2019 on 10-year-old "Anna" apple trees (Malus domestica L. Borkh) planted at 4 × 4 m apart in a clay soil under drench irrigation. Sixty uniform trees were selected and subjected to the same cultural practices during both seasons. Apple trees were sprayed three times as follows: before flowering, during full bloom, and 1 month later with the following treatments: control (water only); tryptophan at 25, 50, and 100 ppm; glycine at 25, 50, and 100 ppm; and their combinations, 25 ppm tryptophan + 25 ppm glycine, 50 ppm tryptophan + 50 ppm glycine, and 100 ppm tryptophan + 100 ppm glycine. The results demonstrated that the foliar spraying of "Anna" apple trees with glycine and tryptophan at 25, 50, and 100 ppm and their combinations significantly increased shoot length and diameter, leaf area, total chlorophyll, percentages of fruit set and yield, fruit physical and chemical characteristics, and leaf mineral composition of N, P, K, Ca, Fe, Zn, Mn, and B, whereas it reduced the fruit drop percentage in both seasons in comparison with control. Better results were obtained from the concentrations of 50 and 100 ppm which were more effective in both seasons in comparison with the concentration of 25 ppm. Moreover, the combination of 50 ppm glycine 50 ppm tryptophan was the best treatment and provided the highest results in both experimental seasons in comparison with the other applied treatments and control.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is the second most abundant sugar crop after sugarcane. Two field experiments were conducted at the research farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Saba Basha, Alexandria, Egypt, to study the effects of foliar application treatments and boron (B) fertilizer applications on monogerm sugar beet plants (cultivar classic) during the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons. The treatments were replicated three times in a split-plot design. Four foliar applications [fulvic acid (FvA), NPK nanoparticles (NPK NPs), FvA + NPK NPs, and a control (water)] were randomly allocated to the main plots. Different numbers of foliar spray applications of B [one application at 120 days after sowing or two applications at 120 and 150 days after sowing, as well as a control (water)] were assigned within the subplots. FvA + NPK NPs significantly increased the root length, root diameter, root weight, and root/shoot ratio of the sugar beet plants; the greatest values were obtained by spraying FvA + NPK NPs during both seasons. B significantly increased the root yield, shoot yield, and biological yield, and two applications of B resulted in the greatest values of root yield, shoot yield, biological yield, and quality of sugar beet. The interaction between FvA or NPK NPs and B significantly affected the yield and quality parameters of the sugar beet plants. However, the greatest mean values of these traits resulted from foliar applications of FvA + NPK NPs in conjunction with applications of B under the conditions at Alexandria, Egypt.

The beneficial roles of melatonin (Mel) and gibberellic acid (GA3) in the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments, osmoregulation, and methylglyoxal (MG) detoxification and antioxidant system were studied in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Five Star) seedlings under NaCl stress. The exogenous application of Mel (100 µM) and GA3 (1.4 µM) together more efficiently affected growth performance of seedlings under salt stress. The decreased chlorophyll (Chl) degradation and Chl-degrading enzyme (chlorophyllase) activity in seedlings receiving Mel plus GA3 resulted in increased Chl content by upregulating Chl synthesizing enzyme (δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase) under salinity. Exogenous Mel plus GA3 suppressed the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS; superoxide and hydrogen peroxide) and activity of glycolate oxidase. Application of Mel with GA3 reduced MG content by enhancing the activity of enzymes (glyoxalase I and glyoxalase II) involved in the MG detoxification system. Both Mel and GA3 together protected seedlings from ROS induced damage by regulating Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase activity, and content of proline (Pro) and glycine betaine (GB). Seedlings receiving Mel + GA3 exhibited a substantial upregulated activity of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and lipoxygenase, and redox homeostasis that reduced oxidative damage induced by salinity. These outcomes advocate that Mel and GA3 played beneficial roles in Chl, Pro and GB biosynthesis, and improved redox homeostasis, and MG detoxification and antioxidant system under salt stress.

The contamination of agricultural soil with heavy metals is a complex phenomenon that causes negative consequences for various organisms. Poplars may have considerable phytoremediation potential, and this plant species can tolerate Cd, Cu, and Pb up to 15.6, 63.6, and 173.3 mg kg-1 soil, respectively, with 100% survival. The analyzed data revealed significant reduction in vegetative growth traits and leaf N, P, K, and carbohydrate (%) and leaf green color degree. However, a simultaneously significant increase in enzymatic activities and electrolyte leakage were recorded in comparison to control plants. A bioconcentration factor of plant organs was ˂ 1, and the translocation factors (TF) of Cd and Cu were ˂ 1 ( ˂100%) under various concentrations of each heavy metal, while TF of Pb was ˃ 1(>100%), except for the first level. More Cd, Cu, and Pb contents were localized in roots compared to leaves or stems. Thus, the risk of contamination through leaf can be minimized. Populus nigra has defense mechanisms against Cd, Cu, and Pb up to 7.8, 29.8, and 91.1 mg/kg soil, respectively because the tolerance index (TI) of either biomass or root was >0.8. Finally, it is a good candidate for research of phytoremediation and phytoextraction.

Jasmonic acid (JA) is an important phytohormone associated in defense responses against stress. Crop plants experience heavy metal toxicity and needs to be explored to enhance the crop production. Lead (Pb) is one of the dangerous heavy metal that pollutes soil and water bodies and is released from various sources like discharge from batteries, automobile exhaust, and paints. The present study was designed to evaluate the role of JA (100 nM) on photosynthetic pigments, secondary metabolites, organic acids, and metal ligation compounds in tomato seedlings under different concentrations of Pb (0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 mM). It was observed that Pb treatment declined pigment content, relative water content, and heavy metal tolerance index. Expression of chlorophyllase was also enhanced in Pb-treated seedlings. Seeds primed with JA lowered the expression of chlorophyllase under Pb stress. JA application enhanced the contents of secondary metabolites (total phenols, polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanin) which were confirmed with enhanced expression of chalcone synthase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase in Pb-exposed seedlings. Treatment of JA further elevated the levels of organic acids and metal chelating compounds under Pb toxicity. JA up-regulated the expression of succinate dehydrogenase and fumarate hydratase in Pb-exposed seedlings. Results revealed that seeds primed with JA reduced Pb toxicity by elevating, the levels of photosynthetic pigments, secondary metabolites, osmolytes, metal ligation compounds, organic acids, and polyamine accumulation in tomato seedlings.

Background: Trees are good sources of bioactive compounds as antifungal and antioxidant activities. Methods: Management of six molecularly identified Fusarium oxysporum isolates (F. oxy 1, F. oxy 2, F. oxy 3, F. oxy 4, F. oxy 5 and F. oxy 6, under the accession numbers MW854648, MW854649, MW854650, MW854651, and MW854652, respectively) was assayed using four extracts from Conium maculatum leaves, Acacia saligna bark, Schinus terebinthifolius wood and Ficus eriobotryoides leaves. All the extracts were analyzed using HPLC-VWD for phenolic and flavonoid compounds and the antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging and β-carotene-linoleic acid (BCB) bleaching assays. Results: In mg/kg extract, the highest amounts of polyphenolic compounds p-hydroxy benzoic, benzoic, gallic, and rosmarinic acids, with 444.37, 342.16, 311.32 and 117.87, respectively, were observed in C. maculatum leaf extract, gallic and benzoic acids with 2551.02, 1580.32, respectively, in A. saligna bark extract, quinol, naringenin, rutin, catechol, and benzoic acid with 2530.22, 1224.904, 798.29, 732.28, and 697.73, respectively, in S. terebinthifolius wood extract, and rutin, o-coumaric acid, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, resveratrol, and rosmarinic acid with 9168.03, 2016.93, 1009.20, 1156.99, and 574.907, respectively, in F. eriobotryoides leaf extract. At the extract concentration of 1250 mg/L, the antifungal activity against the growth of F. oxysporum strains showed that A. saligna bark followed by C. maculatum leaf extracts had the highest inhibition percentage of fungal growth (IPFG%) against F. oxy 1 with 80% and 79.5%, F. oxy 2 with 86.44% and 78.9%, F. oxy 3 with 86.4% and 84.2%, F. oxy 4 with 84.2, and 82.1%, F. oxy 5 with 88.4% and 86.9%, and F. oxy 6 with 88.9, and 87.1%, respectively. For the antioxidant activity, ethanolic extract from C. maculatum leaves showed the lowest concentration that inhibited 50% of DPPH free radical (3.4 μg/mL). Additionally, the same extract observed the lowest concentration (4.5 μg/mL) that inhibited BCB bleaching. Conclusions: Extracts from A. saligna bark and C. maculatum leaves are considered potential candidates against the growth of F. oxysporum isolates—a wilt pathogen—and C. maculatum leaf as a potent antioxidant agent.

In this study, we have explored the possible role of ascorbic acid (ASC) and glutathione (GSH) in alleviating arsenate (AsV ) toxicity in brinjal roots. Moreover, we have also focused our attention on the possible involvement of endogenous nitric oxide (NO) in accomplishing this task. AsV treatment negatively impacts the length and fresh weight of roots and shoots as well as the dry weight and fitness of roots, and this was accompanied by greater As accumulation in roots and shoots of brinjal. AsV treatment also declined the endogenous NO level by inhibiting Nitric Oxide Synthase-like (NOS-like) activity. Furthermore, AsV stimulated oxidative stress markers, caused protein damage by their carbonylation due to downregulation in antioxidants [particularly ascorbate (AsA)-GSH cycle], leading to disturbed cellular redox status. This, collectively, led to root cell death in brinjal. However, the addition of either ASC or GSH rescued brinjal roots from the toxic effects of AsV in. Interestingly, lycorine (an inhibitor of ASC biosynthesis) further increased AsV toxicity, while ASC rescued its effects. Moreover, buthionine sulphoximine (BSO, an inhibitor of GSH biosynthesis) interestingly increased further AsV toxicity, while GSH rescued the plant from the As toxic effects. An interesting notion of this study was that GSH rescued the toxic effect of lycorine, while ASC rescued the toxic effect of BSO, though the AsV toxicity mediated by either ASC or GSH was always accompanied by high endogenous NO level and NOS-like activity. All together, these results suggest that ASC and GSH independently mitigate AsV toxicity in brinjal roots, but both might be dependent on endogenous NO for accomplishing the AsV toxicity alleviatory tasks.

Potassium (K+) is one of the vital macronutrients required by plants for proper growth and blossoming harvest. In addition, K+ also plays a decisive role in promoting tolerance to various stresses. Under stressful conditions, plants deploy their defense system through various signaling molecules, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The present investigation was carried out to unravel the role of K+ and H2S in plants under NaCl stress. The results of the study show that NaCl stress caused a reduction in K+ and an increase in Na+ content in the tomato seedling roots which coincided with a lower H+-ATPase activity and K+/Na+ ratio. However, application of 5 mM K+, in association with endogenous H2S, positively regulated the Na+/H+ antiport system that accelerated K+ influx and Na+ efflux, resulting in the maintenance of a higher K+/Na+ ratio. The role of K+ and H2S in the regulation of the Na+/H+ antiport system was validated by applying sodium orthovanadate (plasma membrane H+-ATPase inhibitor), tetraethylammonium chloride (K+ channel blocker), amiloride (Na+/H+ antiporter inhibitor), and hypotaurine (HT, H2S scavenger). Application of 5 mM K+ positively regulated the ascorbate–glutathione cycle and activity of antioxidant enzymes that resulted in a reduction in reactive oxygen species generation and associated damage. Under NaCl stress, K+ also activated carbohydrate metabolism and proline accumulation that caused improvement in osmotic tolerance and enhanced the hydration level of the stressed seedlings. However, inclusion of the H2S scavenger HT reversed the effect of K+, suggesting H2S-dependent functioning of K+ under NaCl stress. Therefore, the present findings report that K+, in association with H2S, alleviates NaCl-induced impairments by regulating the Na+/H+ antiport system, carbohydrate metabolism, and antioxidative defense system.

Objectives Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.), a member of the Arecaceae family is grown on large areas in the world with varying climatic and soil conditions. However, date palm productivity is severely being affected by ongoing climate changes. Identifying suitable production areas for date palm under changing climatic conditions could help to sustain its production. The objective of the current study was to predict the range expansion/contraction in the production areas of date palm in a semi-arid region. Methods CLIMEX model was used to estimate the expected expansion/contraction in the potential distribution areas of date palm under current and future climatic conditions. Two climate change scenarios [(CCSs) i.e., A1B and A2] were used and production suitability was predicted for three timespans [i.e., 2030 (early-century), 2050 (mid-century) and 2100 (late century)]. Results The model estimated significant suitable area (71.21%) for date palm cultivation under current climatic conditions. Climate change seemed to have no impact on production areas until early-century. However, range contraction (8 and 10% decline under A1B and A2 scenarios, respectively) in the suitable areas was predicted for mid-century. Nonetheless, severe range contraction (27.98 and 33% decline under A1B and A2 scenarios, respectively) was predicted in the production areas for late-century. Most of the climatically suitable areas during early-century became unsuitable during late-century. Moreover, the model predicted northward shift in the production areas for date palm. The range contraction was higher under A2 climate change scenario due to higher warming trend compared to A1B scenario. Conclusion The results of the current study indicate that plenty of areas are suitable for date palm cultivation. Thus, date palm cultivation could be increased in these areas for augmenting the production. Climate warming will result in the range shifts; thus, cultivation of future orchards should be planned in the most suitable areas in order to avoid the negative consequences of climate change on date palm production in the country.

Background: early blight disease caused by Alternaria solani is one of the most destructive diseases of the tomato, reducing tomato production globally. Methods: four fungal isolates were collected from four tomato cultivars and identified through morphological characterization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the internal transcript spacer (ITS) region. Plectranthus neochilus and Parthenocissus quinquefolia methanol extracts and the bioagents Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens were used as antifungal agents in vitro and in vivo and compared with chlorothalonil, a reference chemical fungicide. HPLC analysis of the plant extracts was used to identify the main flavonoid compounds, namely, rutin and myricetin. Results: molecular characterization showed that the fungal isolates belonged to A. solani. The results of in vitro antifungal activity studies revealed that chlorothalonil, at a concentration of 2500 mg/L, showed the highest inhibition percentage of fungal growth (IPFG) against A. solani (84.4%), followed by the bioagents T. viride and P. fluorescens, with IPFG values of 72.9% and 67.9%, respectively. Moderate to weak activity was found against A. solani when P. neochilus and P. quinquefolia extracts were applied at a concentration of 2500 mg/L, with an IPFG value of 54% for both extracts. The results of in vivo spray application showed that T. viride and chlorothalonil, as well as P. fluorescens, significantly reduced the disease index of early blight, and followed by the P. neochilus and P. quinquefolia extracts. By HPLC, the flavonoid compounds rutin and myricetin were identified in P. neochilus (leaf) with amounts of 2429.60 and 75.92 mg/100 g of extract, and in P. quinquefolia (fruit), with amounts of 1891.60 and 241.06 mg/100 g of extract, respectively. Conclusions: the results of the bioactivity of plant extracts and the bioagents indicate a vital role as antifungal activity against A. solani.

Owing to the active use of rare-earth elements in many areas, it is necessary to study their behavior in the environment and their biological impact on plants. Despite the role of melatonin and sulfur in plant growth, development and abiotic stress tolerance; it is still not clear how they have a strong regulatory influence and synergistic effect on growth, physiological and biochemical characteristics of plants under different environmental stresses. Therefore, this study highlights how melatonin and sulfur together potentially involved in a reversal of lanthanum-inhibited photosynthetic and growth responses in tomato seedlings. Here, we reported that seedlings grown in a medium containing 150 μM lanthanum exhibited increased overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation together with increased Chlorophyll degradation, and activity of chlorophyllase, proline dehydrogenase and glycolate oxidase (GOx), and decreased photosynthesis and growth. However, the application of melatonin and sulfur showed significant responses on tomato seedlings, although the response of their combined treatment was more effective by further increasing photosynthesis and growth under lanthanum toxicity. Melatonin supplied with sulfur suppressed ROS formation, lipid peroxidation and activity of GOx, and increased photosynthesis by upregulating activities of carbonic anhydrase and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. Also, sulfur supplementation with melatonin to seedlings resulted in an elevation in the accumulation of Chl and proline by increasing δ-aminolevulinic acid and activity of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase and Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase activity. The administration of melatonin with sulfur substantially induced upregulation of enzymes (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase and glutathione reductase) activities involved in the antioxidant system, thereby mitigating ROS-induced oxidative damage. Thus, this study provides strong evidence that melatonin and sulfur have strong regulatory influence and synergistic role in alleviating the adverse effect of lanthanum-toxicity by increasing photosynthesis and growth.

Due to the global warming, rising temperature became a serious threat to the world agriculture. Faba bean plant is very susceptible to heat stress and performs poorly under high temperature condition. Therefore, the performance of faba bean (Vicia faba L.), genotype ‘C5’ was tested to explore (i) the biosynthesis of proline (Pro) in response to heat stress (HS) and the involvement of nitric oxide (NO) and Pro in thermotolerance mechanism and (ii) the role of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and Pro in defense, and their correlation with the tolerance of faba bean plant to HS. Exposure of plants to HS for 48 h resulted in increased levels of reactive oxygen species [hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide ions (O2•−)], nitric oxide (NO), accumulation of Pro and malondialdehyde, electrolyte leakage, DNA damage, chlorophyll (Chl) degradation and in decreased leaf relative water content (RWC) and Chl content in faba bean plants. However, at the same time increasing levels of HS (32, 37 and 42 °C) increased the accumulation of NO, Pro, activities of Pro metabolizing enzymes (Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase, ornithine-δ-aminotransferase and proline dehydrogenase) and expression of HSPs (Hsp17.6, Hsp70, Hsp90-1, and Hsp101). Induced biosynthesis of NO and Pro under HS activated defense system of plants by enhancing the activities of antioxidant enzymes [superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase and ascorbate peroxidase] and also by increasing the content of reduced glutathione (GSH), ascorbate (AsA) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG). While, an increase in GSSG content was found lesser than an increase in GSH under HS stress. Application of 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO; an NO scavenger) decreased the accumulation of leaf RWC and Pro and NO. Therefore, it can be proposed that NO acts as both signal molecule and promotor of Pro biosynthesis. The present investigation reveals that above studied parameters could be used in identifying a HS-tolerant plant that can be utilized in future breeding programs.

The effects of magnesium (Mg) supplementation on the growth performance, oxidative damage, DNA damage, and photosynthetic pigment synthesis, as well as on the activity level of carbonic anhydrase (CA), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco), and antioxidant enzymes were studied in Vicia faba L. plants exposed to heat stress (HS) and non-heat-stress (non-HS) conditions. Seeds were grown in pots containing a 1:1 mixture of sand and peat, with Mg treatments. The treatments consisted of (i) 0 Mg and non-HS (ambient temperature; control); (ii) 50 mM Mg; (iii) HS (38 °C); and (iv) 50 mM Mg and HS (38 °C). HS was imposed by placing potted plants in an incubator at 38 °C for 48 h. Growth attributes, total chlorophyll (Total Chl), and CA, and Rubisco activity decreased in plants subjected to HS, whereas accumulation of organic solutes [proline (Pro) and glycine betaine (GB)]; superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) activity; DNA damage; electrolyte leakage (EL); and malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content all increased. Application of Mg, however, significantly enhanced further proline (Pro), glycinebetaine (GB), SOD, POD, and CAT activity, and decreased DNA damage, EL, and MDA and H2O2 concentrations. These results suggest that adequate supply of Mg is not only essential for plant growth and development, but also improves plant tolerance to HS by suppressing cellular damage induced by reactive oxygen species through the enhancement of the accumulation of Pro and GB, and the actions of antioxidant enzymes. Soil salinity is an adverse abiotic factor which reduces plant growth, yield and quality. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have a great potential to enhance growth and alleviate saline stress effects without harming the environment via regulating physiological and molecular processes in plants. This study aimed at investigating Bacillus firmus SW5 effects on the performance of soybean (Glycine max L.) subjected to salt stress (0, 40 and 80 mM NaCl). Salinity stress mitigated the growth and biomass yield, root architecture traits, nutrient acquisition, chlorophyll level, transpiration rate (E), photosynthesis rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs), soluble proteins content, soluble sugars content and total phenolics and flavonoid contents of soybean plants. High salinity augmented the levels of osmolytes (glycine betaine and proline), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activities of antioxidant enzymes (APX, CAT, SOD and POD) in soybean plants. High salinity also induced the expression of antioxidant enzyme-encoding genes (APX, CAT, POD, Fe-SOD) and genes conferring tolerance to salinity (GmVSP, GmPHD2, GmbZIP62, GmWRKY54, GmOLPb, CHS) in soybean plants. On the other hand, inoculation of NaCl-stressed soybean plants with Bacillus firmus SW5 promoted the growth and biomass yield, chlorophyll synthesis, nutrient uptake, gas exchange parameters, osmolytes levels, total phenolic and flavonoid contents, and antioxidant enzymes activities, in comparison with the plants treated with NaCl alone. Bacillus firmus SW5 inoculation also significantly reduced the IC50 values for both DPPH and β-carotene-linoleic acid assays and indicated higher antioxidant activities in salt-stressed plants. Furthermore, contents of H2O2 and MDA were alleviated in salinity-stressed soybean plants inoculated with Bacillus firmus SW5, in comparison with those in plants exposed to NaCl alone. The antioxidant enzyme-encoding genes and stress-related genes exhibited the highest expression levels in soybean plants inoculated with Bacillus firmus SW5 and treated with 80 mM NaCl. Taken together, our results demonstrate the crucial role of Bacillus firmus SW5 in ameliorating the adverse effects of high salinity on soybean growth and performance via altering the root system architecture and inducing the antioxidant defense systems and stress-responsive genes expression.

Linseed is an important industrial crop cultivated for its edible seeds and fiber linen. Organic fertilizers have beneficial effects on soil properties and quality of crops. Therefore, we conducted two field experiments during 2018&ndash, 2019 and 2019&ndash, 2020 to determine the effect of organic fertilizers on soil fertility, yield and fiber quality of linseed varieties Roshni, BL1 and Chandni under low soil moisture conditions. We prepared organic fertilizers from seed cake of Eruca sativa, leaves of Moringa oleifera and chicken peat in various combinations by composting method. The various formulations of organic fertilizers included OF1(1 kg seed cake of Eruca sativa), OF2 (1 kg seed cake of Eruca sativa +1 kg chicken peat), OF3 (1 kg seed cake of Eruca sativa + 0.5 kg chicken peat + 0.25 kg Moringa oliefera leaves) and OF4 (1 kg seed cake of Eruca sativa + 0.250 kg chicken peat + 0.5 kg Moringa oliefera leaves). Compositional analysis of organic fertilizers indicated that OF3 and OF4 had higher and may potentially sufficient quantities of NPK and organic matter. Both of these fertilizers significantly improved soil total N, available P, K, Zn and Fe contents. Growth response of linseed varieties to organic fertilizers was evaluated under water deficit stress (40% field capacity of soil) at tillering stage for one month. Water stress had significantly adverse effects on plant height, production of tillers per plant, leaf relative water content (LRWC), number of capsules per plant, thousand seed weight, total seed yield, straw yield, fiber length and fiber weight of linseed varieties. However, the application of OF3 and OF4 significantly enhanced plant height, tillers production, LRWC, seed yield, straw yield, fiber length and fiber weight under water deficit stress. Water deficit stress also resulted in a significant increase in the content of phenolics of both the leaves and roots. For each measured quality parameter of linseed varieties, organic fertilizer treatments resulted in higher values than untreated and irrigated control. We concluded that organic fertilizers particularly OF3 and OF4 significantly improved soil fertility and minimized negative effect of water deficit stress on plant height, tillers production, LRWC, seed yield, straw yield, fiber length and fiber weight of linseed varieties.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) serves fundamental regulatory functions in metabolism beyond the role as damage signal. During stress conditions, the level of H2O2 increases in the cells and causes oxidative stress, which interferes with normal cell growth in plants and animals. The H2O2 also acts as a central signaling molecule and regulates numerous pathways in living cells. To better understand the generation of H2O2 in environmental responses and its role in cellular signaling, there is a need to study the flux of H2O2 at high spatio&ndash, temporal resolution in a real-time fashion. Herein, we developed a genetically encoded Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET)-based nanosensor (FLIP-H2O2) by sandwiching the regulatory domain (RD) of OxyR between two fluorescent moieties, namely ECFP and mVenus. This nanosensor was pH stable, highly selective to H2O2, and showed insensitivity to other oxidants like superoxide anions, nitric oxide, and peroxynitrite. The FLIP-H2O2 demonstrated a broad dynamic range and having a binding affinity (Kd) of 247 &micro, M. Expression of sensor protein in living bacterial, yeast, and mammalian cells showed the localization of the sensor in the cytosol. The flux of H2O2 was measured in these live cells using the FLIP-H2O2 under stress conditions or by externally providing the ligand. Time-dependent FRET-ratio changes were recorded, which correspond to the presence of H2O2. Using this sensor, real-time information of the H2O2 level can be obtained non-invasively. Thus, this nanosensor would help to understand the adverse effect of H2O2 on cell physiology and its role in redox signaling.

A trend towards environmentally friendly chemicals for use in termite management has been occurring globally. This study examined three naturally occurring plant extracts from Lavandula latifolia (Spike lavender), Origanum vulgare (Marjorum), and Syzygium aromaticum (Clove) against the termite Microcerotermes eugnathus. Plant extract results were compared to two commercially used termite pesticides, the bio-insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Protecto 9.4% WP) and Dursban (Chlorpyrifos 48%). Gas chromatography&ndash, mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was used to identify the main compounds in the three plant extracts. The main compounds in Lavandula Latifolia were linalool (21.49%), lavandulol (12.77%), &beta, terpinyl acetate (10.49%), and camphor (9.30%). Origanum vulgare extract contained thymol (14.64%), m-cymene (10.63%), linalool (6.75%), and terpinen-4-ol (6.92%) as main compounds. Syzygium aromaticum contained eugenol (99.16%) as the most abundant identified compound. The extract of O. vulgare caused the highest termite death rate, with an LC50 of 770.67 mg/L. Exposure to lavender extract showed a high death rate with an LC50 of 1086.39 mg/L. Clove extract did not show significant insecticidal activity with an LC50 &gt, 2000 mg/L. Significant termiticide effects were found, with LC50 values of 84.09 and 269.98 mg/L for soldiers and workers under the application of Dursban and Protecto, respectively. The LC50 values reported for nymphs were &lt, 120, &lt, 164.5, and 627.87 mg/L after exposure to Dursban, Protecto, and O. vulgare extract, respectively. The results of the study show that some of the extracts have low toxicity compared to the bioagent and Dursban, and may show promise as natural termiticides, particularly as extracts from O. vulgare.

Accumulation of the Municipal Sewage Sludge (MSS) is considered as one of the most harmful renewable ecological and human health problems. MSS is a renewable resource that could be used as a soil organic amendment. This study aims to reduce the Heavy Metals (HMs) from the sludge content and sludge compost. Furthermore, this study is considered the first to assess the mycotoxins content in sludge and sludge compost via a new biological treatment using the fungus Serendipita indica or a mixture of lactic acid bacteria, thus providing safer nutrients for the soil amendment for a longer time and preserving human health. The HMs and mycotoxins were determined. The results exhibited that the biotic remediation of bio-solid waste and sewage sludge compost succeeded; a new bio-treated compost with a very low content of heavy metals and almost mycotoxins-free contents was availed. Also, the results indicated that the Lactobacilli mixture realized the best results in reducing heavy metals contents and mycotoxins. Afterward, S. indica. biotic remediation of bio-solid waste and sewage sludge compost minimized the health risk hazards affecting the human food chain, allowing for the different uses of sludge to be safer for the environment.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) have been known to affect vast number of processes in plants under abiotic stresses. Also, calcium (Ca) works as a second messenger in plants, which underpins the abiotic stress-induced damage. However, the sequence of action of these signaling molecules against cadmium (Cd)-induced cellular oxidative damage remains unidentified. Therefore, we studied the synergistic actions and/or relationship of signaling molecules and Ca-dependent activation of tolerance mechanisms in Vigna radiata seedlings under Cd stress. The present study shows that exogenous Ca supplemented to Cd-stressed V. radiata seedlings reduced Cd accumulation and improved the activity of nitrate reductase, and L/D-cysteine desulfhydrase (LCD/DCD) that resulted in improved synthesis of NO and H2S content. Application of Ca also elevated the level of cysteine (Cys) by upregulating the activity of Cys-synthesizing enzymes serine acetyltransferase and O-acetylserine(thiol)lyase in Cd-stressed seedlings. Maintenance of Cys pool under Cd stress contributed to improved H2S content which together with Ca and NO improved antioxidant enzymes and components of ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle. All these collectively regulated the activity of NADPH oxidase and glycolate oxidase, resulting in the inhibition of Cd-induced generation of reactive oxygen species. The elevated level of Cys also assisted the Cd-stressed seedlings in maintaining GSH pool which retained normal functioning of AsA-GSH cycle and led to enhanced content of phytochelatins coupled with reduced Cd content. The positive effect of these events manifested in an enhanced rate of photosynthesis, carbohydrate accumulation, and growth attributes of the plants. On the contrary, addition of NO scavenger cPTIO [2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide], H2S scavenger HT (Hypotaurine) and Ca-chelator EGTA (Ethylene glycol-bis(b-aminoethylether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid) again developed a condition similar to stress and positive effect of the signaling molecules was abolished. The findings of the study postulate that Ca in association with NO and H2S mitigates Cd-induced impairment and enhances the tolerance of the V. radiata plants against Cd stress. The results of the study also substantiate that Ca acts both upstream as well as downstream of NO signals whereas, H2S acts downstream of Ca and NO during Cd-stress responses of the plants.

Problem of chromium (Cr) pollution is of great scientific concern as it adversely affects crop productivity worldwide. Therefore, scientific efforts are being made to minimize Cr toxicity in crop plants by using various methods. Of these methods, use of certain chemicals like ascorbic acid (ASC), glutathione, proline, nutrients, etc. has shown promising results. Therefore, in this study, we have tested a role of ASC in regulating hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] toxicity in tomato roots. Chromium (VI) reduced length, dry weight, fitness and tissue density of roots due to enhanced cellular accumulation of Cr which leads to the cell death. Chromium (VI) also declined ASC pool and activity of its regenerating enzymes along with enhanced level of oxidative stress and damage to lipids and proteins. However, exogenous addition of ASC significantly reversed toxic effects of Cr(VI) in tomato roots. Furthermore, addition of lycorine (inhibitor of ASC biosynthesis) interestingly augmented Cr(VI) toxicity. However, exogenous addition of ASC reversed toxic effect of lycorine suggesting that endogenous ASC has role in alleviating Cr(VI) toxicity in tomato roots.

Metal toxicity in crop plants is a matter of scientific concern. Therefore, in recent years efforts have been made to minimize metal toxicity in crop plants. Out of various strategies, priming of seedlings with certain chemicals, like e.g. donors of signaling molecules, nutrients, metabolites or plant hormones has shown encouraging results. However, mechanisms related with the priming-induced mitigation of metal toxicity are still poorly known. Hence, we have tested the potential of 2-oxoglutarate (2-OG) priming in enhancing the arsenate (AsV ) toxicity tolerance in tomato seedlings along with deciphering the probable role of nitric oxide (NO) in accomplishing this task. Arsenate decreased growth, endogenous NO and nitric oxide synthase-like activity but enhanced the accumulation of As, which collectively led to root cell death. Arsenate toxicity also decreased some photosynthetic characteristics (i.e. Fv /Fm, qP, Fv /F0 and Fm /F0 , and total chlorophyll content) but enhanced NPQ. However, priming with 2-OG alleviated the toxic effect of AsV on growth, endogenous NO, cell death and photosynthesis. Moreover, arsenate inhibited the activities of enzymes of nitrogen metabolism (i.e. nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, glutamine synthetase and glutamine 2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase) but increased the activity of glutamate dehydrogenase and NH4 + content. Superoxide radicals, hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation and membrane damage increased upon AsV exposure, but the antioxidant enzymes (i.e. superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione-S-transferase) showed differential responses. Overall, our results showed that 2-OG is capable of alleviating AsV toxicity in tomato seedlings but the involvement of endogenous NO is probably required.

Worldwide, maize (Zea mays L.) is considered an important food and fodder crop. Compost as a soil amendment and potassium (K) could enhance the maize yield. Therefore, two field experiments were carried out in the two seasons 2017 and 2018 to study the effects of compost at three levels and four forms of potassium fertilization on the yellow maize hybrid ‘Pioneer SC 30N11’ yield components. To conduct the field trials, a split plot system in three replications was established. Three compost levels (0, 5 and 10 ton/ha) were in the main plots, and four potassium forms (untreated, nano-potassium fertilizer, humic acid and potassium sulfate) were in the subplots. Plot size was 10.50 m2, with 5 ridges with 3 m length and 0.7 m width. The results indicated that the application of compost (as organic manure) and the potassium forms significantly affected the plant height, ear length, grains number/rows, grains number/ear, 100- grain weight, straw and biological yields, grain protein and K contents in both seasons. Increasing the compost from 5 to 10 ton/ha increased the yield, its components, protein and K contents. The foliar application of nano-potassium followed by humic acid increased all the studied characteristics. The interaction between compost manure (10 ton/ha) and nano-potassium (500 cm3/ha) or humic acid (10 ton/ha) recorded the highest mean values for all parameters during both harvest seasons.

In the present study, the enhancement of the production of Origanum majorana essential oils (EOs) was studied by treating plants with ascorbic acid (AA) and tryptophan (Trp) at concentrations of 100, 200 and 300 mg/L and Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MLE) at 2.5%, 5% and 10% as foliar applications during the seasons 2018&ndash, 2019. The toxicities of the EOs were assayed against four seed-borne fungi (Bipolaris orzyae, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium verticilliodies and F. graminearum) isolated from rice grains (Oryzae sativa). Vegetative growth parameters and EO production were enhanced by the application of AA, Trp and MLE in both seasons. Analysis of the EOs by Gas chromatography&ndash, mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed that the main chemical constituents were terpineol (cis-&beta, (1-terpinenol)), terpinen-4-ol, 4-thujanol (sabinene hydrate), &alpha, terpineol, cymene and sabinene. The highest fungal mycelial growth inhibition (FMGI) percentages against F. verticilliodies were 94.57% and 92.63% as MLE at 5% and 10%, respectively, was applied to plants and 85.60% and 82.19% against F. graminearum as Trp was applied to plants at 300 and 200 mg/L, respectively. EOs from the treated plant with MLE (10%) observed the highest FMGI (84.46%) against B. oryzae, and EOs from plants treated with AA as foliar application at 300 and 200 mg/L showed the highest FMGI values of 81.11% and 81.85%, respectively, against the growth of C. lunata. Application of EOs extracted from plants treated with Trp, AA and MLE at 300 mg/L, 300 mg/L and 10%, respectively, or untreated plants to rice seeds inhibited or decreased the fungal infection percentage from 82.5% (naturally infected grains) to 1.75%, 10.5%, 17.5% and 18.5%, respectively. In conclusion, the extracted EOs affected by the foliar application of O. majorana plants with Trp, AA, and MLE could be useful as a biofungicide against rice seed-borne fungi.

A batch bio-sorption experiment was conducted on Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. wood-branch in the form of woody sawdust nanoparticles (nSD-KF) to evaluate their potential efficiency as phosphate bio-sorption capacity. The operating parameters of phosphate bio-sorption including contact time, initial concentration, pH, temperature, dosage, size, competing ion, and the possible mechanisms responsible for phosphate removal from water were investigated. The nSD-KF were green-synthesized by ball mill grinder and phosphate solutions with various concentrations were performed. The results revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) value of nSD-KF was 50,000 &micro, g/g. In addition, the removal efficiency of nSD-KF significantly increased with the increase of initial phosphate concentration, contact time, temperature, and dosage. However, it decreased with the increase of pH and in double-system solution with the presence of ammonium ions. At the application study, the nSD-KF successfully removed 87.82% and 92.09% of phosphate from real agricultural wastewater in a batch experiment and in a column experiment, respectively. Adsorption efficiency of nSD-KF for phosphate increased after the first and second regeneration cycles, but it decreased after the third and fourth cycles. The poor to moderate phosphate desorption from nSD-KF sorbent indicates the stability of phosphate bound to nSD-KF materials. Regardless, biodegradability of nSD-KF-loaded phosphate is possible, and it will be a good source of phosphate to a plant when added to the agricultural soil as a supplemental application of fertilizer. In conclusion, nSD-KF could be considered as a promising lignocellulosic biomaterial used for the removal of phosphate from waters as bio-sorption process.

Phenolic acids and natural extracts, as ecofriendly environmental agents, can be used as bio bactericides against the growth of plant pathogenic bacteria. In this study, isolation trails from infected potato tubers and stems that showed soft rot symptoms in fields revealed two soft rot bacterial isolates and were initially identified through morphological, physiological, and pathogenicity tests. The molecular characterization of these isolates via PCR, based on the 16S rRNA region, was carried out by an analysis of the DNA sequence via BLAST and Genbank, and showed that the soft rot bacterial isolates belong to Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (PCC1) and Dickeya solani (Ds1). The in vitro results of the tested phenolic acids against the cultured bacterial isolates proved that concentrations of 800, 1600, and 3200 &mu, g/mL were the most effective. Ferulic acid was the potent suppressive phenolic acid tested against the Ds1 isolate, with an inhibition zone ranging from 6.00 to 25.75 mm at different concentrations (25&ndash, 3200 &mu, g/mL), but had no effect until reaching a concentration of 100 &mu, g/mL in the PCC1 isolate, followed by tannic acid, which ranged from 7.00 to 25.50 mm. On the other hand, tannic acid resulted in a significant decrease in the growth rate of the PCC1 isolate with a mean of 9.11 mm. Chlorogenic acid was not as effective as the rest of the phenolic acids compared with the control. The n-hexane oily extract (HeOE) from Bougainvillea spectabilis bark showed the highest activity against PCC1 and Ds1, with inhibition zone values of 12 and 12.33 mm, respectively, at a concentration of 4000 &mu, g/mL, while the HeOE from Citharexylum spinosum wood showed less activity. In the GC/MS analysis, nonanal, an oily liquid compound, was found ata percentage of 38.28%, followed by cis-2-nonenal (9.75%), which are the main compounds in B. spectabilis bark HeOE, and 2-undecenal (22.39%), trans-2-decenal (18.74%), and oleic acid (10.85%) were found, which are the main compounds in C. spinosum wood HeOE. In conclusion, the phenolic acids and plant HeOEs seem to raise the resistance of potato plants, improving their defense mechanisms against soft rot bacterial pathogens.

Maize is considered one of the most imperative cereal crops worldwide. In this work, high throughput silica nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) were prepared via the sol&ndash, gel technique. SiO2-NPs were attained in a powder form followed by full analysis using the advanced tools (UV-vis, HR-TEM, SEM, XRD and zeta potential). To this end, SiO2-NPs were applied as both nanofertilizer and pesticide against four common pests that infect the stored maize and cause severe damage to crops. As for nanofertilizers, the response of maize hybrid to mineral NPK, &ldquo, Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K)&rdquo, (0% = untreated, 50% of recommended dose and 100%), with different combinations of SiO2-NPs, (0, 2.5, 5, 10 g/kg soil) was evaluated. Afterward, post-harvest, grains were stored and fumigated with different concentrations of SiO2-NPs (0.0031, 0.0063. 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 5, 10 g/kg) in order to identify LC50 and mortality % of four common insects, namely Sitophilus oryzae, Rhizopertha dominica, Tribolium castaneum, and Orizaephilus surinamenisis. The results revealed that, using the recommended dose of 100%, mineral NPK showed the greatest mean values of plant height, chlorophyll content, yield, its components, and protein (%). By feeding the soil with SiO2-NPs up to 10 g/kg, the best growth and yield enhancement of maize crop is noticed. Mineral NPK interacted with SiO2-NPs, whereas the application of mineral NPK at the rate of 50% with 10 g/kg SiO2-NPs, increased the highest mean values of agronomic characters. Therefore, SiO2-NPs can be applied as a growth promoter, and in the meantime, as strong unconventional pesticides for crops during storage, with a very small and safe dose.

The interplay between melatonin (Mel) and calcium (Ca) in enhancing tolerance to metalloid toxicity and underlying physiological and biochemical mechanisms of this relationship still remains unknown. The present study reveals that the signaling molecules Mel and/or Ca enhanced tolerance of Vicia faba (cv. Tara) plant to metalloid arsenic (As) toxicity. However, a combination of Mel and Ca was more efficient than alone. Plants grew with As exhibited enhanced hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, electrolyte leakage, lipid peroxidation together with increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) producing enzymes, such as NADPH oxidase and glycolate oxidase (GOX). On the contrary, an inhibition in chlorophyll (Chl) biosynthesis and gas exchange parameters (net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular carbon dioxide concentration) was observed. Under As toxicity conditions, the application of Mel and Ca synergistically suppressed the plants’ program cell death features (nucleus condensation and nucleus fragmentation) in guard cells of stomata, DNA damage, and formation of ROS in guard cells, leaves and roots. Moreover, it enhanced gas exchange parameters and activity of enzymes involved in photosynthesis process (carbonic anhydrase and RuBisco), Chl biosynthesis (δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase), and decreased activity of Chl degrading enzyme (chlorophyllase) under As toxicity conditions. Our investigation evidently established that expression of ATP synthase, Ca-ATPase, Ca-DPKase, Hsp17.6 and Hsp40 was found maximum in the plants treated with Mel + Ca, resulting in higher tolerance of plants to As stress. Also, increased total soluble carbohydrates, cysteine, and Pro accumulation with increased Pro synthesizing enzyme (Δ-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS) and decreased Pro degrading enzyme (proline dehydrogenase) in Mel + Ca treated plants conferred As toxicity tolerance. The obtained results postulate strong evidence that the application of Mel along with Ca enhances resilience against As toxicity by upregulating the activity of plasma membrane H-ATPase, enzymes involved in antioxidant system, and ascorbate-glutathione pathway., The authors extend their appreciation to the Deanship of Scientific Research at King Saud University for funding this work through Research Group No. RG-1441-438.

The present study described the possibility of using wood-treated oil-fungicide of lemon-scented gum (Corymbia citriodora) from newly emerged leaves and unripened fruits against the infestation of Fusarium culmorum, Rhizoctonia solani and Penicillium chrysogenum. Air-dried wood samples of Melia azedarach were treated with the extracted oils from leaves and unripened fruits from C. citriodora. The main chemical constituents identified in the essential oil (EO) from leaves were citronellal (55.31%), citronellol (21.03%) and isopulegol (10.79%), while in unripened fruits were &alpha, pinene (17.86%), eudesmol (13.9%), limonene (9.19%), &gamma, terpinen (8.21%), and guaiol (7.88%). For recovered oils (ROs), the major components from leaves were D-limonene (70.23%), &gamma, terpinene (13.58%), &beta, pinene (2.40%) and isopregol (2.23%), while, 4-terpineol (21.35%), cis-&beta, terpineol, (19.33%), D-limonene (14.75%), and &gamma, terpinene (7.42%) represented the main components in fruits. EOs from leaves and fruits at the amounts of 100, 50 and 25 &micro, L showed the highest inhibition percentage (IP) of 100% against F. culmorum and P. chrysogenum compared to control treatment, while at the amounts of 100, and 50 &micro, L showed 100% IP of R. solani. Wood treated with ROs from leaves and fruits showed IPs of 96.66% and 93.33%, respectively, against the growth of R. solani. The mass spectra of the main components of C. citriodora leaves and fruits&rsquo, EOs have been recorded in electron ionization mode at 70 eV and fragmentation has been reported and discussed. On the other hand, different quantum parameters such as the heat of formation, ionization energy total energy, binding energy, electronic energy and dipole moment using the modified neglect of diatomic overlap (MNDO) semi-empirical method have been calculated.

In the present study, Melia azedarach wood blocks treated with different acetone extract concentrations from Withania somnifera fruits are assessed for their antibacterial and anti-fungal activities. Wood blocks of M. azedarach treated with W. somnifera fruit extract at concentrations of 0, 1, 2, and 3% are evaluated for in vitro antimicrobial activity against five genbank accessioned bacterial strains&mdash, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Dickeya solani, Erwinia amylovora, Pseudomonas cichorii, and Serratia pylumthica&mdash, and two fungi, namely, Fusarium culmorum and Rhizoctonia solani. Through HPLC analysis we find that the most abundant quantified phenolic and flavonoid compounds of acetone extract (mg/100 g) are salicylic acid (9.49), vanillic acid (4.78), rutin (4702.58), and myricetin (1386.62). Wood treated with the extract at 2% and 3% show no growth of A. tumefaciens, E. amylovora, and P. cichorii. Use of the extract at 3% causes inhibition of fungal mycelia of F. culmorum and R. solani by 84.07% and 67.03%, respectively. In conclusion, potent antifungal and antibacterial activity against plant pathogens is found when an acetone extract of W. somnifera fruits is applied to wood samples.

The present study presented an integrated analytical approach to the Qur’anic manuscript with leather binding; the multianalyses revealed the degree of degradation for paper and leather in the current manuscript under the study, causing the mapping of treatment. The visual assessment detected yellowness in the internal papers, dark black spots, and advanced erosion in the leather bind. The result detected that this manuscript leads to yellowing and weakness in the properties of paper under the attack of acidity where the pH of paper reached 5.5. XRD and FTIR analyses of paper illustrated a dramatic decrease of crystallinity index with a notable increase of C=O stretching, respectively. The sharp increase of carbonyl group can be used as evidence of oxidation. The microscopic examination also showed that cotton was used in the manufacturing of the paper of the current manuscript, while the leather bind was made from goatskin. In addition, the cellulose and protein bundles were both destructive and disintegrated.

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is a fruit crops belong to the family Anacardiaceae and is the oldest cultivated tree worldwide. Cultivars maintained in Egypt have not been investigated previously. Mango was first brought to Egypt from South Asia. Morphological and molecular techniques were used to identify the genetic diversity within 28 mango cultivars. SSR and EST-SSR were used for optimizing germplasm management of mango cultivars. Significant variations were observed in morphological characteristics and genetic polymorphism, as they ranged from 0.71% to 100%. High diversity was confirmed as a pattern of morphological and genotypes data. Data from the present study may be used to calculate the mango relationship and diversity currently grown in Egypt.

Boron (B), an essential micronutrient, helps the plants to complete their life cycle successfully. Therefore, the present experiment was conducted to study (1) the role of B in seed germination and seedling growth, (2) the toxicity effect of B in seed germination and seedling growth and (3) the role of B in tolerance of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. ‘Bakore’) to NaCl stress. Under NaCl stress and non-stress conditions, application of high levels of B (100 µM) decreased parameters of germination (G%, VI, GI and MGT), growth (RL, SL, RFW, SFW, RDW and SDW), except the accumulation of Pro and MDA in barley seedlings. Also, a fluorescence study reveals that production of ROS (H2O2 and O2 •—) and non-viable cells increased in roots of barley seedlings treated with NaCl and high dose of B. An alteration in anatomical structure of barley seedlings was observed with the application of NaCl and high dose of B. However, a low concentration of B (50 µM) proved best and increased all germination and growth traits of barley seedlings by increasing further accumulation of Pro. Also, 50 µM of B significantly increased the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments (Chl a, b and total Chl) and deceased formation of ROS and viable cells in roots. Therefore, concluded that sufficient dose of B could be beneficial for barley plant in improving the tolerance to NaCl stress.

In the present study, the effects of n-hexane extracts from Phytolacca dioica L. and Ziziphus spina-christi L. fruits were evaluated against the growth of potato brown and soft rot bacterial pathogens, namely, Ralstonia solanacearum, Dickeya solani, Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, Enterobacter cloacae, and Bacillus pumilus. The chemical components of the oils were analyzed using GC/MS, and the antioxidant activity was determined using 2,2-dipheny-1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging (DPPH) and β-carotene-linoleic acid assays. Aromatic hydrocarbons such as 6-phenyl-dodecane and 7-phenyl-tridecane were the most abundant compounds identified in n-hexane from both fruits. Also, some volatile compounds such as α-citronellol (2.46%), and dodecane (2.27%) were found in P. dioica and m-cymene (1.95%), crypton (1.58%), and α-pinene (1.20%) found in Z. spina-christi fruit extracts. Z. spina-christi fruit extract showed antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 5.5 ± 0.1 and 4.1 ± 0.1 μg/mL, while P. dioica fruit extract showed values of 5.2 ± 0.1 and 6.3 ± 0.1 μg/mL, as measured by DPPH and β-Carotene-linoleic acid, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration values for Z. spina-christi fruit extract ranged from 32 to 125 μg/mL against the studied bacteria. For P. dioica, the MIC values ranged from 32 to 64 μg/mL. The extracts from P. dioica and Z. spina-christi fruits exhibited different levels of activities against the growth of potato brown rot, soft rot and blackleg bacterial pathogens.

Among the heavy metals (HMs), lead (Pb) is considered as a toxic HM which adversely affects growth and development of crop plants. The present experiment was aimed to investigate the potential role of ascorbic acid (ASC) in the reversal of Pb-inhibited nitrogen and sulfur assimilation enzymes activity and activity of photosynthesis enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and growth response in wheat plants. Wheat seedlings were subjected to 0 mM (control) and 0.2 mM and 0.6 mM of ASC with and without 2 mM of Pb. Plants treated with Pb exhibited the following reduced growth characteristics (root length, shoot length, root fresh weight (FW), shoot FW, root dry weight (DW) and shoot DW). A decrease was also observed in the activity of Rubisco and ATP sulfurylase (ATP-S), relative water content (RWC), accumulation of total chlorophyll (Total Chl) and content of nutrients [nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg)] in Pb-treated plants. However, an increase in Chl degradation and in the activity of O-acetylserine(thiol)lyase (OAS-TL) and accumulation of cysteine (Cys), malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was observed in plants under Pb stress. On the contrary, exogenous application of ASC mitigated the Pb-toxicity-induced oxidative damage by enhancing the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione reductase. Improved activity of antioxidant enzymes suppressed the formation of MDA and H2O2, which was reflected in the form of improved growth characteristics. Moreover, ASC induced improvement in plants defense systems by reduced Chl degradation and improved the content of essential nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) and Cys, RWC and the activity of Rubisco, ATP-S, NR and OAS-TL.

Due to increasing soil salinity, the world agricultural output is being threatened by the shrinking area of fertile land. In the present study, we explored the interactive roles of nitric oxide (NO; 100 μM) and spermidine (SP; 200 μM) in ameliorating the effects of salt stress (NaCl; 100 mM) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. var. Five Star) seedlings. NaCl stress reduced shoot and root length, shoot and root fresh weight, shoot and root dry weight plant -1 and leaf area leaf -1. NaCl stress also suppressed the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll a and b) and increased proline (Pro) content, membrane damage and lipid peroxidation by inducing reactive oxygen species (H2O2 and O2• - ) generation in roots and leaves, as well as electrolyte leakage (EL) and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation in leaves. However, applying NO and/or SP increased the activities of catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase and ascorbate peroxidase and increased photosynthetic pigment (chlorophyll a and b) and Pro accumulation, as well as reducing H2O2 and O2• - and MDA content and EL, under salt stress. When tomato plants were treated with NO and SP simultaneously, NO signaling was further enhanced, which was confirmed by the addition of cPTIO [2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide; NO scavenger].

This work investigates an experimental study for using low-cost and eco-friendly oils to increase the shelf life of strawberry fruit. Three natural oils were used: (i) Eucalyptus camaldulensis var obtuse, (ii) Mentha piperita green aerial parts essential oils (EOs), and (iii) Moringa oleifera seeds n-hexane fixed oil (FO). Furthermore, a mixture of EOs from E. camaldulensis var obtusa and M. piperita (1/1 v/v) was used. The treated fruits were stored at 5 °C and 90% relative humidity (RH) for 18 days. HPLC was used to analyse the changes in phenolic compounds during the storage periods. The effects of biofumigation through a slow-release diffuser of EOs (E. camaldulensis var obtusa and M. piperita), or by coating with M. oleifera FO, were evaluated in terms of control of post-harvest visual and chemical quality of strawberry fruits. The post-harvest resistance of strawberry fruits to Botrytis cinerea fungal infection was also evaluated. As a result, the EO treatments significantly reduced the change in visual and chemical quality of strawberry fruit. Additionally, changes in the titratable acidity of moringa FO-coated strawberry fruits were delayed. EO treatments improved total soluble solids, total phenols, ascorbic acid, antioxidants and peroxidase. E. camaldulensis var obtusa and M. piperita (1/1 v/v) EO-vapour fruit exhibited a slower rate of deterioration, compared to other treatments in all tested, in two experiments. The lowest colour change (ΔE) was observed inthe fruit treated with E. camaldulensis var obtusa EO and M. oleifera FO. HPLC showed changes in phenolic compounds’ concentration, where p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, gallic acid, ferulic acid and ellagic acid were mostly identified in the fruits treated with the oils. SEM examination confirmed the potential decrease in fungal growth as the fruits were treated with EOs. In conclusion, the treatment of EOs during different storage periods showed promising characterisations for strawberry fruit quality.

Salt accumulation in soils poses severe challenges for crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. Scarcity of rainfall and a high evaporation rate in these regions are considered major reasons for salt accumulation. It drastically reduces the leaching of excessive salts below the root zone of crops. The toxic effects of salts on plants can be greatly reduced with the use of biological and inorganic amendments. The present study was conducted to investigate the positive influence of gypsum (GP), composted cow dung (CCD) and the combined use of gypsum and composted cow dung (GP+CCD) on the growth, seed yield, and physiological and chemical attributes of sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) in salty soil conditions. Saline-sodic soil was prepared using salts that include NaCl, Na2SO4, MgSO4, and CaCl2. It contained three levels of electrical conductivity (EC), i.e., 1.8, 6, and 12 dS m−1, and had a sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) of 15. We noted significant deleterious effects of excessive salt stress on multiple attributes of the growth, produce, physiology, and chemical factors of sunflowers. However, treatment with GP+CCD improved all these attributes in all these conditions over the control treatment. Treatment with GP+CCD also significantly increased N, P and K contents over the control in the absence of salt stress, i.e., normal conditions. Conversely, treatment with GP+CCD caused an extreme decline in antioxidant enzyme activity (APX, GPX, CAT and SOD) and Na+/K+ ratio in seeds of up to 90, 75, and 71% over control at an EC level of 1.8, 6, and 12 dS m−1, respectively. This study suggests the combined application of gypsum and composted cow dung for better production of sunflowers in salt-affected soils, and augmented growth, yield, physiology, biochemistry and nutritional value in the sunflower seeds.

Potent antibacterial activities of solvent extracts (methanol:n-hexane) from the branch, leaf, and root-wood of Salvadora persica were examined against potato phytopathogenic bacteria, namely Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, Dickeya solani, Ralostonia solanacerum, Enterobacter cloacae, and Bacillus pumilus. The main chemical constituents analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in the branch extracts were N-benzylbenzamide (71.08%), decane (3.17%), stigmasterol (3.17%), 9-desoxo-9-x-acetoxy-3,8,12-tri-O-acetylingol (2.33%), and β-sitosterol (2.15%). The main components in the leaf extracts were 2,6-dimethyl-N-(2-methyl-α-phenylbenzyl)aniline (28.65%), spiculesporic acid (13.60%), homo-γ-linolenic acid (12.63%), and methyl hexadecanoate (11.01%). The root-wood extracts contained, as primary parts, benzeneacetonitrile (71.47%), 4-aminocarbonyl-5-fluoro-1-α-D-ribofuranosyl-imidazole (10.99%), and benzylisothiocyanate (5.05%). The extracts from the root-wood showed moderate antibacterial activity against the potato bacterial pathogens, which was followed by leaf and branch extracts. The results suggested that S. persica plant extracts could be used as bioagents against potato soft and brown rot bacterial pathogens.

Climate change represents a major threat to agriculture. High ambient temperatures, as a result of global warming, are currently limiting plant growth and development. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) in combination with indole acetic acid (IAA) on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants under heat stress (HS) and non-heat stress (non-HS) conditions. HS is suggested to induce the formation of reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, which may lead to genotoxicity by damaging DNA, which can be detected by the comet assay (single-cell gel electrophoresis). HS substantially enhanced proline (Pro), malondialdehyde accumulation, electrolyte leakage (EL), growth reduction, and reduced physiological and biochemical parameters. However, the co-application of SNP and IAA alleviated the adverse effects of HS by promoting catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activities and enhancing the accumulation of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and b) and Pro with a concomitant decrease in H2O2 and $\hbox{O}_ 2^ - $ content, EL, and DNA damage. Conversely, the treatment of tomato plants with the NO scavenger cPTIO [2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide] along with SNP and IAA further reduced the SNP signal. Therefore, these results suggest that the application of SNP with IAA improves plant defense mechanisms against HS.

In the present work, essential oils (EOs) extracted from different parts of sour orange Citrus aurantium (green leaves/twigs, small branches, wooden branches, and branch bark) were studied through gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Furthermore, the EOs in the amounts of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 &micro, L were studied for their antibacterial activity against three pathogenic bacteria, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Dickeya solani, and Erwinia amylovora. The main EO compounds in the leaves/twigs were 4-terpineol (22.59%), D-limonene (16.67%), 4-carvomenthenol (12.84%), and linalool (7.82%). In small green branches, they were D-limonene (71.57%), dodecane (4.80%), oleic acid (2.72%), and trans-palmitoleic acid (2.62%), while in branch bark were D-limonene (54.61%), &gamma, terpinene (6.68%), dodecane (5.73%), and dimethyl anthranilate (3.13%), and in branch wood were D-limonene (38.13%), dimethyl anthranilate (8.13%), (-)-&beta, fenchol (6.83%), and dodecane (5.31%). At 25 &micro, L, the EO from branches showed the highest activity against A. tumefaciens (IZ value of 17.66 mm), and leaves/twigs EO against D. solani and E. amylovora had an IZ value of 17.33 mm. It could be concluded for the first time that the wood and branch bark of C. aurantium are a source of phytochemicals, with D-limonene being the predominant compound in the EO, with potential antibacterial activities. The compounds identified in all the studied parts might be appropriate for many applications, such as antimicrobial agents, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

The current study evaluated the synergistic role of Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia gladioli on different physiological, biochemical and molecular activities of 10-days old Solanum lycopersicum seedlings under Cd stress. Cd toxicity altered the levels of phenolic compounds (total phenols (30.2%), flavonoids (92.7%), anthocyanin (59.5%), polyphenols (368.7%)), osmolytes (total osmolytes (10.3%), total carbohydrates (94%), reducing sugars (64.5%), trehalose (112.5%), glycine betaine (59%), proline (54.8%), and free amino acids (63%)), and organic acids in S. lycopersicum seedlings. Inoculation of P. aeruginosa and B. gladioli alleviated Cd-induced toxicity, which was manifested through enhanced phenolic compound levels and osmolytes. Additionally, the levels of low molecular weight organic acids (fumaric acid, malic acid, succinic acid, and citric acid) were also elevated. The expression of genes encoding enzymes for phenols and organic acid metabolism were also studied to be modulated that included CHS (chalcone synthase; 138.4%), PAL (phenylalanine ammonia lyase; 206.7%), CS (citrate synthase; 61.3%), SUCLG1 (succinyl Co-A ligase; 33.6%), SDH (succinate dehydrogenase; 23.2%), FH (fumarate hydratase; 12.4%), and MS (malate synthase; 41.2%) and found to be upregulated in seedlings inoculated independently with P. aeruginosa and B. gladioli. The results provide insights into the role of micro-organisms in alleviating Cd-induced physiological damage by altering levels of different metabolites.

In this study, for the environmental development, the antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities of a water extract of flowers from Acacia saligna (Labill.) H. L. Wendl. were evaluated. The extract concentrations were prepared by dissolving them in 10% DMSO. Wood samples of Melia azedarach were treated with water extract, and the antifungal activity was examined at concentrations of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% against three mold fungi, Fusarium culmorum MH352452, Rhizoctonia solani MH352450, and Penicillium chrysogenum MH352451 that cause root rot, cankers, and green fruit rot, respectively, isolated from infected Citrus sinensis L. Antibacterial evaluation of the extract was assayed against four phytopathogenic bacteria, including Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Enterobacter cloacae, Erwinia amylovora, and Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, using the micro-dilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Further, the antioxidant capacity of the water extract was measured via 2,2&prime, diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Phenolic and flavonoid compounds in the water extract were analyzed using HPLC: benzoic acid, caffeine, and o-coumaric acid were the most abundant phenolic compounds, while the flavonoid compounds naringenin, quercetin, and kaempferol were identified compared with the standard flavonoid compounds. The antioxidant activity of the water extract in terms of IC50 was considered weak (463.71 &mu, g/mL) compared to the standard used, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (6.26 &mu, g/mL). The MIC values were 200, 300, 300, and 100 &micro, g/mL against the growth of A. tumefaciens, E. cloacae, E. amylovora, and P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, respectively, which were lower than the positive control used (Tobramycin 10 &mu, g/disc). By increasing the extract concentration, the percentage inhibition of fungal mycelial was significantly increased compared to the control treatment, especially against P. chrysogenum, suggesting that the use of A. saligna flower extract as an environmentally friendly wood bio-preservative inhibited the growth of molds that cause discoloration of wood and wood products.
