The effect of typical domestic microwave heating (015min, at 800W) on the thermal degradation of unflavored and flavored olive oils' minor bioactive compounds and related antioxidant activity was studied. Olive oils from cv. Arbequina were flavored with lemon verbena essential oil (0\%, 0.2\% and 0.4\%, w/w) leading to a linear increase of total phenols (112160 mg gallic acid kg1 oil, R-Pearson=+0.9870), total carotenoids (2.192.56 mg lutein kg1 oil, R-Pearson=+0.9611), and, to a less extent, of chlorophyll (2.323.19 mg pheophytin kg1 oil, R-Pearson=+0.8238). However, no such linear trend was observed for the oxidative stability (6.57.8 h) or the radical scavenging activity (inhibition rates: 40\%43\%). The contents of total phenols, total carotenoids, and chlorophyll decreased with the rise of the microwave heating time, following their thermal degradation, a second-order kinetic model (0.8784R-Pearson0.9926). The essential oil addition did not influence the estimated second-order rate reaction constants of total phenols (0.000700.00072kg oil min1 mg1 gallic acid)and total carotenoids (0.140.17kg oil min1 mg1 lutein), with a broader variation observed for chlorophyll (0.0140.022kg oil min1 mg1 pheophytin). Globally, total carotenoids degraded faster than total phenols and chlorophyll (half-life of 2.33.4, 8.812.8, and 14.530.8 min, respectively). Using a spectral survey collected with the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment, in this work we report the detection of 42 transitions of HNCO in the hot molecular core/outflow G331.512-0.103 (hereafter G331). The spectral lines were observed in the frequency interval ∼160–355 GHz. By means of Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium analyses, applying the rotational diagram method, we studied the excitation conditions of HNCO. The excitation temperature and column density are estimated to be Tex= 58.8 ± 2.7 K and N = (3.7 ± 0.5) × 1015 cm−2, considering beam dilution effects. The derived relative abundance is between (3.8 ± 0.5) × 10−9 and (1.4 ± 0.2) × 10−8. In comparison with other hot molecular cores, our column densities and abundances are in agreement. An update of the internal partition functions of the four CHNO isomers: HNCO; cyanic acid, HOCN; fulminic acid, HCNO; and isofulminic acid, HONC is provided. We also used the astrochemical code NAUTILUS to model and discuss HNCO abundances. The simulations could reproduce the abundances with a simple zero-dimensional model at a temperature of 60 K and for a chemical age of ∼105 yr, which is larger than the estimated dynamical age for G331. We present an infrared (IR) characterization of the born-again planetary nebulae (PNe) A 30 and A 78 using IR images and spectra. We demonstrate that the carbon-rich dust in A 30 and A 78 is spatially coincident with the H-poor ejecta and coexists with hot X-ray-emitting gas up to distances of 50 arcsec from the central stars of PNe (CSPNe). Dust forms immediately after the born-again event and survives for 1000 yr in the harsh environment around the CSPN as it is destroyed and pushed away by radiation pressure and dragged by hydrodynamical effects. Spitzer IRS spectral maps showed that the broad spectral features at 6.4 and 8.0 μm, attributed to amorphous carbon formed in H-deficient environments, are associated with the disrupted disc around their CSPN, providing an optimal environment for charge exchange reactions with the stellar wind that produces the soft X-ray emission of these sources. Nebular and dust properties are modelled for A 30 with cloudy taking into account different carbonaceous dust species. Our models predict dust temperatures in the 40-230 K range, five times lower than predicted by previous works. Gas and dust masses for the born-again ejecta in A 30 are estimated to be Mgas=4.41+0.550.14× 10-3 M· and M dust=3.20+3.21-2.06× 10-3 M·, which can be used to estimate a total ejected mass and mass-loss rate for the born-again event of 7.61+3.76-2.20× 10-3 M· and M=(5-60)× 10-5 M· yr-1, respectively. Taking into account the carbon trapped into dust grains, we estimate that the C/O mass ratio of the H-poor ejecta of A 30 is larger than 1, which favours the very late thermal pulse model over the alternate hypothesis of a nova-like event. © 2021 The Author(s)., The authors acknowledge funding by Direccion General de Asuntos del Personal Academico of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (DGAPA, UNAM) project IA100720. However, how marine heatwaves (MHWs) affect the functional structure of temperate coral‐dominated communities is poorly understood. Here, we used five long‐term (> 10 years) records of Mediterranean coralligenous assemblages in a multi‐taxa, trait‐based analysis to investigate MHW‐driven changes in functional structure. We show that, despite stability in functional richness (i.e. the range of species functional traits), MHW‐impacted assemblages experienced long‐term directional changes in functional identity (i.e. their dominant trait values). Declining traits included large sizes, long lifespans, arborescent morphologies, filter‐feeding strategies or calcified skeletons. These traits, which were mostly supported by few sensitive and irreplaceable species from a single functional group (habitat‐forming octocorals), disproportionally influence certain ecosystem functions (e.g. 3D‐habitat provision). International audience; In this study, the influence of the degree of crystallization and thickness of films was correlated with the photoelectrochemical performance of SrTaO2N semiconductor films for O2 evolution reaction under visible light irradiation. Oxynitride films were deposited on various substrates using the sputtering in Ar + N2 reactive atmosphere from a home-made SrTaO2N target. Films with stoichiometric composition were obtained at a high temperature (TS =800 °C) with reduced bandgap. The different substrates led to diverse degrees of film crystallization, from weakly crystallized to fully c-axis oriented. The photoelectrochemical performance was improved by improving the film crystallinity and the thickness. For further improvement of the photoelectrochemical performance, the following three limiting factors are identified 1) low absorption coefficient, especially in the visible domain from 500 to 600 nm; 2) short lifetimes of excited charge carriers; and 3) permittivity with only moderate values lower than 10 in the visible-light domain.

This paper analyzes the impact of adopting the ISO 14001 standard on firm environmental and economic performance. In particular, it is argued that the degree of environmental awareness of the society (EAS) and firm size are two factors moderating the effect of ISO 14001 on firm performance. A number of hypotheses are formulated and empirically tested on an international sample of 583 listed companies in 46 countries over the period of 2009–2018. The findings show that (i) ISO 14001 adoption contributes to reducing firm carbon emission intensity and increasing firm profitability; (ii) the impact of ISO14001 on profitability is greater for companies from countries with high EAS and for larger firms; and (iii) the impact of ISO 14001 on carbon intensity is greater for headquartered in countries with low EAS. Managerial and policy implications resulting from the widespread adoption of certifiable environmental standards are also discussed. [EN] Image-based and range-based solutions can be used for the acquisition of valuable data in medicine. However, most of these methods are not valid for non-static patients. Cranial deformation is a problem with high prevalence among infants and image-based solutions can be used to assess the degree of deformation and monitor the evolution of patients. However, it is required to deal with infants normal movement during the assessment in order to avoid sedation. Some high-end multiple-sensor image-based solutions allow the achievement of accurate 3D data for medical applications under unpredicted dynamic conditions in consultation. In this paper, a novel, single photogrammetric smartphone-based solution for cranial deformation assessment is presented. A coded cap is placed on the infant's head and a guided smartphone app is used by the user to acquire the information, that is later processed on a server to obtain the 3D model. The smartphone app is designed to guide users with no knowledge of photogrammetry, computer vision or 3D modelling. The processing is fully automatic offline. The photogrammetric tool is also non-invasive, reacting well with quick and sudden infant's movements. Therefore, it does not require sedation. This paper tackles the accuracy and repeatability analysis tested both for a single user (intrauser) and multiple non-expert user (interuser) on 3D printed head models. The results allow us to confirm an accuracy below 1.5 mm, which makes the system suitable for clinical practice by medical staff. The basic automatically-derived anthropometric linear magnitudes are also tested obtaining a mean variability of 0.6 +/- 0.6 mm for the longitudinal and transversal distances and 1.4 +/- 1.3 mm for the maximum perimeter., This project is funded by Instituto de Salud Carlos III and European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), project number PI18/00881, and by Generalitat Valenciana, grant number ACIF/2017/056.

Ferrocenylated glycol nucleic acid (Fc-GNA) components are rarely studied in the field of xeno nucleic acid (XNA) chemistry. As an attempt to contribute to XNA chemistry, in the present article we report a seven-step synthesis of the first semicanonical dinucleoside containing the Fc-GNA nucleoside linked to the adenosine nucleoside with a phosphodiester bond. First, the nucleoside-bearing ethynylferrocenyl moiety in the C5 position of the uracil nucleobase was obtained. In the following steps, the nucleoside was transformed into the phosphoramidite intermediate that in turn was reacted with N6-benzoyl-2′,3′-O-isopropylideneadenosine to afford the target dinucleoside phosphate with 47% yield. The newly obtained Fc-GNA nucleoside is redox-active, and on the basis of this property (function), it belongs to a new class of functional GNA (fun-GNA) nucleosides. The electrochemistry of the Fc-GNA nucleoside, dinucleoside phosphate, and ferrocenyl furanopyrimidone nucleoside that was obtained as an undesired byproduct of Fc-GNA nucleoside synthesis was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The CV result showed the presence of a one-electron ferrocenyl-centered redox wave in each case. The half-wave potentials of the Fc-GNA nucleoside and dinucleoside phosphate were 89 and 99 mV, respectively, against the FcH/FcH+ couple. Finally, the activity of the newly obtained Fc-GNA components was studied against the nontumorigenic mouse L929 and human cervix adenocarcinoma HeLa cells. The synthesized compounds showed no cytotoxic activity against the tested cell lines. The methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid (IL) was successfully used for the dissolution of cotton cellulose. IL and IL-cellulose were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analyses. The obtained IL-cellulose was applied to wool and hair keratin fiber surfaces, forming a fine coating layer. From FT-IR and XRD analyses, the results suggested the reduction of hydrogen bonds and crystallinity in IL-cellulose-coated wool fibers. This effect was caused by covering the wool with the IL-cellulose coating, and good intrinsic mechanical properties were observed. Moreover, the dimensional performance of coated keratin fibers presented length variations of around 8 and 12\% under wet and dry conditions for wool and hair fibers, respectively. This work describes the development of a capacitive-type sensor created from nanoporous anodic aluminium oxide (NP-AAO) prepared by the one-step anodization method conducted in potentiostatic mode and performed in a low-cost homemade system. A series of samples were prepared via an anodization campaign carried out on different acid electrolytes, in which the anodization parameters were adjusted to investigate the effect of pore size and porosity on the capacitive sensing performance. Two sensor test cases are investigated. The first case explores the use of highly uniform NP-AAO structures for humidity sensing applications while the second analyses the use of NP-AAO as a capacitive touch sensor for biological applications, namely, to detect the presence of small objects such as bacterial colonies of Escherichia Coli. A mathematical model based on equivalent electrical circuits was developed to evaluate the effect of humidity condensation (inside the pores) on the sensor capacitance and also to estimate the capacitance change of the sensor due to pore blocking by the presence of a certain number of bacterial microorganisms. Regarding the humidity sensing test cases, it was found that the sensitivity of the sensor fabricated in a phosphoric acid solution reaches up to 39 (pF/RH%), which is almost three times higher than the sensor fabricated in oxalic acid and about eight times higher than the sensor fabricated in sulfuric acid. Its improved sensitivity is explained in terms of the pore size effect on the mean free path and the loss of Brownian energy of the water vapour molecules. Concerning the touch sensing test case, it is demonstrated that the NP-AAO structures can be used as capacitive touch sensors because the magnitude of the capacitance change directly depends on the number of bacteria that cover the nanopores; the fraction of the electrode area activated by bacterial pore blocking is about 4.4% and 30.2% for B1 (E. Coli OD600nm=0.1) and B2 (E. Over the past few years, an increasing dependence of the general population on information and communication technologies has been observed. As such, inclusive and age-friendly design has been of utmost importance to meet the context of every age cohort. Most of the software development projects tend to focus on the assumption relative to the users’ cognitive models, and when addressing senior citizens, these are very likely to have the risk of falling into stereotypes and non-used products. By contrast, involving senior citizens in the early stages of the design process tends to be crucial. The aim of this paper is to identify and validate a co-design process capable of influencing senior citizens’ experience in online communities. One of the elements of the co-design process that is described in the paper is a co-design toolkit to foster positive user experiences when interacting with online communities. The co- design process involved 36 adult learners from five Universities of the Third Age and 2 coordinators, organized into a set of 17 group sessions in the context of the miOne online community. Besides this co-design toolkit, a set of ‘best practices’ for involving the users in the co-design process and implications on the redesign of a Senior Online Community are proposed. Metal ionzeolite materials based on different zeolite structuresFAU (NaY, 100750 nm), LTA (4400 nm), and MFI (ZSM5, >100, 760, and 2500 nm) were studied for developing antimicrobial agents using a simple method. These zeolite structures were loaded with silver, copper, or zinc ions using an ion-exchange method and tested for antimicrobial activity against three bacteriaEscherichia coli, methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a clinical isolate. Sample characterization confirmed the presence of metal ions and the stability of the zeolite structures. All mono- and bimetallic ionzeolite materials loaded with silver displayed higher antimicrobial activity than zinc- or copper-containing samples. The inhibitory effect of metal ionzeolite materials was even higher than the action of antibiotics, especially against MRSA. These findings show that silver ionzeolite materials have potential applications to combat bacterial infections and further prevent the prevalence of resistant microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity seems to be related to the acidity and Si/Al ratio of zeolites, according to the following scale: MFI > FAU > LTA. Inkjet printing (IJP) is a very appealing cost-effective deposition technique to achieve large-area solution-derived functional films. For many applications, it is very challenging to increase the film thickness in order to achieve competitive performance, for instance, high critical currents in superconducting films. In this paper, the preparation of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 thick films (∼1.1 μm) using a single deposition is reported. Specific rules for ink design, deposition protocols, and pyrolysis processes are provided. The most important aspect is to formulate an ink with a solvent having a high boiling point that keeps the whole film wet during deposition to avoid liquid movement due to coffee-ring effects. An additional success has been to modify the ink with a photocurable polyacrylic ester varnish which after polymerization with a UV LED lamp helps keep homogeneous thickness. This varnish also helped avoid the generation of film instabilities (wrinkling or cracking) during pyrolysis. Homogeneous pyrolyzed thick films are transformed into epitaxial thick films with high critical currents. The IJP process is shown to be valid to prepare nanocomposite films using colloidal inks including pre-prepared BaZrO3 nanoparticles. Plastic yielding in solids strongly depends on various conditions, such as temperature and loading rate and indeed, sample-dependent knowledge of yield points in structural materials promotes reliability in mechanical behavior. Commonly, yielding is measured through controlled mechanical testing at small or large scales, in ways that either distinguish elastic (stress) from total deformation measurements, or by identifying plastic slip contributions. In this paper we argue that instead of separate elastic/plastic measurements, yielding can be unraveled through statistical analysis of total strain fluctuations during the evolution sequence of profiles measured in-situ, through digital image correlation. We demonstrate two distinct ways of precisely quantifying yield locations in widely applicable crystal plasticity models, that apply in polycrystalline solids, either by using principal component analysis or discrete wavelet transforms. We test and compare these approaches in synthetic data of polycrystal simulations and a variety of yielding responses, through changes of the applied loading rates and the strain-rate sensitivity exponents., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

New Caledonia is an important biodiversity hotspot, where numerous plant and animal groups show high levels of species diversity and endemicity, while facing multiple threats to their habitats. Leaf beetles in the subfamily Eumolpinae illustrate this pattern, with species estimates higher than the number of described taxa and distribution ranges that are often consistent with microendemicity. In this study, we increase the knowledge of this group by focusing on the Taophila subgenus Lapita, known from three species but here expanded to eleven with eight new species: T. atlantis sp. nov., T. hermes sp. nov., T. kronos sp. nov., T. oceanica sp. nov., T. olympica sp. nov., T. ouranos sp. nov., T. riberai sp. nov., and T. tridentata sp. nov. Additionally, we infer the evolutionary history of the group using mtDNA markers (COI and rrnS). One of the objectives of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is to prevent and reduce the effects of natural hazards, particularly ones caused by climate changes. The ICZM methodologies include use of geographic information systems, from data collection and geo-analysis to dissemination of information to the public. As a part of the Interreg MED Co-evolve project cofinanced by the European regional development fund, the ICZM based action plan is being developed for the City of Kaštela in Croatia. Activities include assessing coastal vulnerability to climate change, focusing on sea flooding and storm damages and related socio-economic vulnerabilities. The paper presents development of large scale vulnerability analysis, adopted from the methodologies developed for mid and small scales. Suitability of the available data is assessed, either official or open source, and data gaps are described. The analysis’s results are presented in terms of the assets exposed to coastal flooding and storms, and future improvements of analysis towards house level vulnerability analysis is envisaged.

We investigated the short-term effects of spent coffee grounds on the physical properties of two Mediterranean agricultural soils (Calcisol and Luvisol). The in vitro assay was performed with two spent coffee grounds doses (60 and 240 Mg ha-1), two incubation times (30 and 60 days) and two modalities: with and without lettuce seedlings (Lactuca sativa var. longifolia). Spent coffee grounds addition increased water retention at -33 and -1500 kPa, and decreased bulk density and plant-available water content. With spent coffee grounds, the percentage of macroaggregates increased, the percentage of meso- and microaggregates decreased and the structural stability of all types of aggregates increased. The stereomicroscopy images showed that: the structural aggregates were rounded, the porosity increased by 316%, the structure was ordered into smaller aggregates, the incorporation of spent coffee grounds particles could occur in intraped cracks and spent coffee grounds particles could act as a binding agent. Scanning electron microscopy also showed that spent coffee grounds particles interacted with mineral particles and integrated into soil structure; moreover, fungal hyphae also developed on many spent coffee grounds particles. Eight years of glider data are used to characterize the temporal and spatial variability of a region in the western Mediterranean that will constitute one of the targets for the calibration phase of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission. The characteristic horizontal dimension of mesoscale instabilities in the Mallorca channel is 6.0 km. The temporal evolution of intermediate water masses is dominated by an increase over time of the characteristic temperature values. Western Mediterranean and Levantine Intermediate waters display an increase of the temperature extrema of 0.064 ± 0.002 and 0.044 ± 0.002 °C/year between 2011 and 2018, respectively. At the layer of Levantine Intermediate water the salinity temporal regression reveals a mean trend of 0.010 year. Temperature annual cycle shows an averaged temperature gradient of ∼6 °C in 6 months at the upper layer, with a disconnection with the annual cycle at 100-m depth. The circulation across the channel is dominated by high-frequency variability. The signature of eddies with radius ranging from 5 to 18 km is apparent in 16% of the transects analyzed and mainly in spring and summer, with a dominance of subsurface cyclonic eddies. Two-way flow controls the annual cycle of the water transport through the channel with prevalence of the inflow of Atlantic water. Factors affecting the evolution of plumage conspicuousness in females are nowadays the focus of debate, and here we explore the possibility that the conspicuousness of female plumage and male participation in nest building are associated in birds. We hypothesize that males that participate in nest building will gain higher fecundity from high-quality ornamented females, whereas ornamented females will adjust fecundity to the costly nest-building behaviour of males. Large-sized species might experience higher costs of nest building and, thus, body size should affect the scenario described above. We used information on male contribution to nest construction (yes/no), male and female conspicuousness (conspicuous or cryptic plumage) and body size of Western Palaearctic passerines. In accordance with the hypothesis, we found that female conspicuousness, in interaction with body mass, was strongly associated with male participation in nest building. For large-sized species, female conspicuousness was positively associated with male participation in nest building. Discrete analyses of correlated evolution rendered evidence of female conspicuousness determining the evolution of male contributions to nest building, with the loss of female conspicuousness occurring more frequently before the loss of male participation in nest building. Implementing catalytic organometallic transformations in living settings can offer unprecedented opportunities in chemical biology and medicine. Unfortunately, the number of biocompatible reactions so far discovered is very limited, and essentially restricted to uncaging processes. Here, we demonstrate the viability of performing metal carbene transfer reactions in live mammalian cells. In particular, we show that copper (II) catalysts can promote the intracellular annulation of alpha‐keto diazocarbenes with ortho‐amino arylamines, in a process that is initiated by an N‐H carbene insertion. The potential of this transformation is underscored by the in cellulo synthesis of a product that alters mitochondrial functions, and by demonstrating cell selective biological responses using targeted copper catalysts. Considering the wide reactivity spectrum of metal carbenes, this work opens the door to significantly expanding the repertoire of life‐compatible abiotic reactions., This work demonstrates that catalytic processes involving metal–carbene intermediates can be exported to the crowded magma of a live mammalian cell. In particular, reactions involving copper carbenes can be used for the synthesis of fluorescent cyclic products in cellular media, in a process that is initiated by an N−H carbene insertion. The method also allows the in cellulo synthesis of a product that alters mitochondrial functions.

Agro-food industries generate a huge amount of fruit and vegetable wastes. These residues are composed by structural parts (leaves, peels, pulps, seeds, roots and stems) after the extraction of their juices, and they are rich in bioactive compounds such polyphenols, protein, carbohydates, fibre, lignin, lipids and minerals. Therefore, these wastes constitute a source of bioactive compunds and their valorization leads to a circular economy in which industry and society benefit. Between the component of the residues, polyphenols compounds may contribute to prevent or treated cancer, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, among others. The aim of this work was the study of the potential therapeutic effect of fruit and vegetable extracts (peach, apple, cucumber and red pepper) obtained by ultrasounds, on different lines of cancer cells (colon, liver and breast) and on oxidative stress in a healthy colon. The results showed that extracts rich in polyphenols had an antiproliferativeeffect against tumor cells and their action was improved by encapsulation in maltodextrin. Encapsulation also increased the protection against oxidative stress in intestinal cells. In this work, decorative wallpapers (19th century) from an historical palace located in Oiartzun (Basque Country, Spain) were analyzed before their restoration. Micro-energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy were used to investigate the elemental and molecular composition of pigments, the presence of binders, and the state of conservation of the paper support. The aim of the investigation was trying to understand the possible degradation pathways and identify the raw materials in order to choose the best restoration protocol according to the original aspect of wallpapers. As stated from both the elemental distribution and the identification of mineral phases by Raman spectroscopy, the most used pigment was lead chromate. It was mixed with other pigments such as ultramarine blue, zinc chromate, hematite, and atacamite among others to obtain different shades and they were applied mixed with an animal glue. Brass, identified thanks to elemental micro-EDXRF maps, was employed as a shiny decorative element. In addition, a partial degradation of cellulose was detected due to its natural ageing, the acidic nature of lignin, and to a phenomenon of humidity of the walls. Probably the deposition of black particulate matter was the cause of the darkening of the painting surfaces. Direct laser writing of amorphous lines in crystalline silicon has the potential for becoming a flexible alternative to silicon-on-insulator technology for photonic integrated circuits. Yet, the maximum amorphous layer thickness achieved is 60 nm, which is below the requirements for waveguiding at telecom wavelengths. Here, the authors report on different strategies to push the layer thickness beyond today's limit. To this end, irradiation with femtosecond laser pulses covering an extremely broad wavelength range (515 nm–4 µm) up to the yet unexplored near- and mid-infrared region of silicon transparency is investigated. The results show that much thicker amorphous layers can be obtained upon multipulse irradiation at 3-µm wavelength. The deepest amorphization is achieved in silicon wafers covered with a thick silicon dioxide layer that strongly assists the heat extraction, yielding steep index profiles with a maximum amorphous layer thickness of 128 nm. This superior thickness is compatible with single mode waveguiding for a symmetric waveguide configuration. Due to their effects on reducing recombination, chromosomal inversions may play an important role in speciation by establishing and/or maintaining linked blocks of genes causing reproductive isolation (RI) between populations. This view fits empirical data indicating that inversions typically harbor loci involved in RI. However, previous computer simulations of infinite populations with two to four loci involved in RI implied that, even with gene flux as low as 10–8 per gamete, per generation between alternative arrangements, inversions may not have large, qualitative advantages over collinear regions in maintaining population differentiation after secondary contact. Here, we report that finite population sizes can help counteract the homogenizing consequences of gene flux, especially when several fitness-related loci reside within the inversion. In these cases, the persistence time of differentiation after secondary contact can be similar to when gene flux is absent and notably longer than the persistence time without inversions. Thus, despite gene flux, population differentiation may be maintained for up to 100,000 generations, during which time new incompatibilities and/or local adaptations might accumulate and facilitate progress toward speciation. The uropygial gland of birds produces an oily secretion with different functions, mainly related to plumage protection. In addition, the volatile compounds of this secretion may act as chemical signals that provide information to conspecifics, but it is also possible that those compounds may further attract hematophagous insect vectors such as those responsible for avian malaria transmission. Individual characteristics such as sex and age are usually associated with variation in the composition of the uropygial secretion. Different studies have shown that mosquitoes are more attracted towards birds infected by avian malaria parasites. However, whether the individual infection status by these parasites may lead to differences in the composition of this secretion remains poorly known. We used gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) to characterise the chemical composition of the volatile lipophilic fraction of the uropygial gland secretions of wild European blackbirds and compare its composition in an urban and a forest locality according to their age, sex and infection status by blood parasites. We found differences in the composition of the secretion between age classes and also between sexes within adult birds. However, no differences were found in the chemical composition of the uropygial gland secretion of birds according to their infection status by blood-parasites and habitat type. Woody plant encroachment affects dry grasslands globally. To predict changes in biodiversity and ecosystem processes, it is important to understand how this process affects the functional composition of grassland organism groups. In this context, seminatural wooded meadows represent a form of experimental manipulation—where open grassland and woody patches co-occur in homogeneous environmental conditions due to human management decisions—which provides an opportunity to address the effect of woody plant encroachment on vegetation and soil biota. We used environmental DNA metabarcoding to address variation in plant, soil fungal, and soil animal communities in parallel. We also addressed functional groups of fungi—animal and plant pathogens, saprotrophs, decomposers, arbuscular mycorrhizal, ectomycorrhizal, endophytic, and other symbiotrophic fungi—and of soil animals—fungivores, bacterivores, litter feeders, root feeders, macro plant feeders, algal/lichen feeders, predators, and parasites. Co-variation between communities was detected from aboveground vegetation plots and metabarcoding of soil DNA, in terms of estimated richness and compositional patterns. Differences between open and wooded patches were most pronounced among plants and symbiotic fungi, whereas soil animals exhibited less marked differences. For most organisms, mean richness, as well as total richness per habitat type, was higher in open than wooded patches, but ectomycorrhizal fungi exhibited the opposite pattern. The functional structure of the soil biotic community, as characterized by the proportion of DNA sequences attributed to different functional groups, differed significantly between open and wooded grassland patches, with symbiotic fungi (arbuscular mycorrhizal, ectomycorrhizal, and other symbiotrophic [mostly orchid mycorrhizal] fungi) contributing most to the difference. This study supports the notion that a soil DNA-based metabarcoding approach can provide insights into the diversity and composition of multiple taxonomic groups in natural ecosystems. It also provides a first demonstration of the complex changes to the functional structure of the belowground community that accompany woody plant encroachment in grasslands. Nosocomial or hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) have a major impact on mortality worldwide. Enterococcus and Staphylococcus are among the leading causes of HAIs and thus are important pathogens to control mainly due to their increased antibiotic resistance. The gold-standard diagnostic methods for HAIs are time-consuming, which hinders timely and adequate treatment. Therefore, the development of fast and accurate diagnostic tools is an urgent demand. In this study, we combined the sensitivity of magnetoresistive (MR) sensors, the portability of a lab-on-chip platform, and the specificity of phage receptor binding proteins (RBPs) as probes for the rapid and multiplex detection of Enterococcus and Staphylococcus. For this, bacterial cells were firstly labelled with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) functionalized with RBPs and then measured on the MR sensors. The results indicate that the RBP-MNPS provided a specific individual and simultaneous capture of more than 70\% of Enterococcus and Staphylococcus cells. Moreover, high signals from the MR sensors were obtained for these samples, providing the detection of both pathogens at low concentrations (10 CFU/ml) in less than 2h. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are essential in healthy diets and their production is extremely important. Natural sources of PUFAs includes animal and aquatic products such as marine fish oil, however there are several limitations such as the decrease of fish stocks throughout the world. Thus, microbial oils are a preferable source of PUFAs. Herein, it was studied the production of PUFAs by Mortierella alpina under solidstate fermentation (SSF) using polyurethane foam as inert substrate and synthetic medium or lignocellulosic hydrolysate as source of C, N and other nutrients. Several parameters of fermentation conditions were evaluated as carbon source, inductors addition, ratio C/N and temperature. The highest amount of total PUFAs per mass of solid (535.41 ±24.12 mg/g), linoleic acid (129.66 ±5.84 mg/g) and linoleic acid (401.93 ±18.10 mg/g) were produced when the culture medium contained 20 g/L glucose, 10% (w/v) linseed oil, the C/N ratio was adjusted to 25 and the incubation temperature was 25 °C for 3days decreasing to 16 °C on the remaining 4days of fermentation. In addition, a hemicellulosic hydrolysate can be used as lowcost substrate to produce PUFAs, although the production was lower than the achieved with synthetic medium. We present single-shot electron velocity-map images of nanoplasmas generated from doped helium nanodroplets and neon clusters by intense near-infrared and mid-infrared laser pulses. We report a large variety of signal types, most crucially depending on the cluster size. The common feature is a two-component distribution for each single-cluster event: A bright inner part with nearly circular shape corresponding to electron energies up to a few eV, surrounded by an extended background of more energetic electrons. The total counts and energy of the electrons in the inner part are strongly correlated and follow a simple power-law dependence. Deviations from the circular shape of the inner electrons observed for neon clusters and large helium nanodroplets indicate non-spherical shapes of the neutral clusters. The dependence of the measured electron energies on the extraction voltage of the spectrometer indicates that the evolution of the nanoplasma is significantly affected by the presence of an external electric field. [EN] Although microalgae-based wastewater treatment has been traditionally carried out in extensive waste stabilization ponds, recent trends focus on the use of microalgae to apply the circular economy principles in the wastewater treatment sector due to the capacity of algae to absorb carbon dioxide while recovering nutrients from sewage. To this aim, the development of new intensive microalgae-based systems with higher efficiency and level of process control is required. Results obtained for these systems at lab scale are generally promising. However, upscaling to outdoor conditions is often uncertain. Some advances have been made in terms of applying open systems at large scale. However, there are still some issues related to land requirements and the economic feasibility and robustness of the process that have to be overcome to widely implement these systems. This article aims at describing the main design and operating factors regarding outdoor microalgae cultivation. It will also explain some microalgae cultivation technologies to treat wastewater, showing their advantages, disadvantages, and the possibility to treat different wastewater streams with microalgae cultures. Demosponges are a well-known source of a plethora of bioactive compounds. In particular, they are able to form a skeleton by direct deposition of silica in a process catalysed by silicatein. Herein, we isolated biosilicas from five different Atlantic deep-sea sponges Geodia atlantica (GA), Geodia barretti (GB), Stelletta normani (SN), Axinella infundibuliformis (AI) and Phakellia ventilabrum (PV) to explore the bioactivity and osteogenic capacity of its silica-based materials. We chemically characterized the isolated biosilicas and evaluated them for their bioactivity to deposit Ca and P on their surface (by immersion in simulated body fluid, SBF). GB-, SN-, AI- and PV-based biosilicas did not generate a stable calcium phosphate (CaP) layer over time in the presence of SBF, however, the GA-derived one was able to form a CaP surface layer (at a Ca/P ratio of ~1.7, similar to the one observed for hydroxyapatite), that was stable during the 28 days of testing. In addition, no cytotoxicity towards L929 and SaOs2 cells was observed for the GA-based biosilica up to a concentration of 10 mg/mL. The characterisation of the multiplicity of high-mass stars is of fundamental importance to understand their evolution, the diversity of observed core-collapse supernovae and the formation of gravitational wave progenitor systems. Despite that, until recently, one of the final phases of massive star evolution -- the cool supergiant phase -- has received comparatively little attention. In this study we aim to explore the multiplicity among the cool supergiants (CSGs) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively). To do this we compile extensive archival radial velocity (RV) measurements for over 1000 CSGs from the LMC and SMC, spanning a baseline of over 40 years. By statistically correcting the RV measurements of each stellar catalogue to the Gaia DR2 reference frame we are able to effectively compare these diverse observations. We identify 45 CSGs where RV variations cannot be explained through intrinsic variability, and are hence considered binary systems. We obtain a minimum binary fraction of $15\pm4\%$ for the SMC and of $14\pm5\%$ for the LMC. Combining these results, we determine a minimum binary fraction of $15\pm3\%$ for CSGs. These results are in good agreement with previous results which apply a correction to account for observational biases. These results add strength to the hypothesis that the binary fraction of CSGs is significantly lower than their main-sequence counterparts. Similarities and differences in the submicron atmospheric aerosol chemical composition are analyzed from a unique set of measurements performed at 21 sites across Europe for at least one year. These sites are located between 35 and 62°N and 10° W – 26°E, and represent various types of settings (remote, coastal, rural, industrial, urban). Measurements were all carried out on-line with a 30-min time resolution using mass spectroscopy based instruments known as Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitors (ACSM) and Aerosol Mass Spectrometers (AMS) and following common measurement guidelines. Data regarding organics, sulfate, nitrate and ammonium concentrations, as well as the sum of them called non-refractory submicron aerosol mass concentration ([NR-PM1]) are discussed. NR-PM1 concentrations generally increase from remote to urban sites. They are mostly larger in the mid-latitude band than in southern and northern Europe. On average, organics account for the major part (36–64%) of NR-PM1 followed by sulfate (12–44%) and nitrate (6–35%). The annual mean chemical composition of NR-PM1 at rural (or regional background) sites and urban background sites are very similar. Considering rural and regional background sites only, nitrate contribution is higher and sulfate contribution is lower in mid-latitude Europe compared to northern and southern Europe. Large seasonal variations in concentrations (μg/m³) of one or more components of NR-PM1 can be observed at all sites, as well as in the chemical composition of NR-PM1 (%) at most sites. Significant diel cycles in the contribution to [NR-PM1] of organics, sulfate, and nitrate can be observed at a majority of sites both in winter and summer. Early morning minima in organics in concomitance with maxima in nitrate are common features at regional and urban background sites. Daily variations are much smaller at a number of coastal and rural sites. Looking at NR-PM1 chemical composition as a function of NR-PM1 mass concentration reveals that although organics account for the major fraction of NR-PM1 at all concentration levels at most sites, nitrate contribution generally increases with NR-PM1 mass concentration and predominates when NR-PM1 mass concentrations exceed 40 μg/m³ at half of the sites., This study was partially supported by the European Union's projects ACTRIS (EU FP7-262254) and ACTRIS-2 (EU Horizon 2020–654109). Energy efficiency has been among the key objectives of the energy policy of the European Union and the European Structural and Investment Funds in the 2014–2020 programming period. It is one of the key priorities of the new European Green Deal, which will guide the EU programmes in the next multiannual financial framework. To provide recommendations for national Managing Authorities on how to design energy efficiency measures for enterprises in the 2021–2027 period, the paper assesses the effectiveness and efficiency of a small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) support scheme in Bulgaria, which has received financing of more than EUR 150 million under the European Regional Development Fund. Combining data from publicly available databases, the paper provides an analysis of geographical and sectoral distributions, the ratio between grant size and energy savings (unit costs), estimations of correlation coefficients and linear regressions, and simple payback time of the EU-financed projects. The key finding of the study is that the scheme under Operational Programme ‘Innovation and Competitiveness’ did not score the input/output ratio of project applications, which resulted in very diverse unit costs, and some of the reviewed projects produced very low energy savings. Overall, the data show that the EU support for energy efficiency measures of large enterprises under the same programme was more coherent and cost-effective as compared to the SME procedure. The paper puts forward recommendations for designing energy efficiency support schemes, which relate to the assessment criteria, the use of internal benchmarking to assess efficiency, and the payback time of energy efficiency measures.

The Miño River is one of the main Atlantic basins of Iberia and preserves extensive Pleistocene deposits. However, there is presently limited information concerning the first human occupation history of this region. Existing research undertaken across the region has identified a significant number of Large Flake Acheulean (LFA) sites with African affinities. These sites are associated with former fluvial environments and are now preserved as a sequence of fluvial terraces along the Miño River, located between relative elevations of + 40 m and + 20 m, and dated to between Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 9 and 6. The chronological range and observed technological patterns are similar to those recognised in other areas of South western Europe, particularly the central Iberian Peninsula and Aquitanian region (France) during the second half of the Middle Pleistocene.

The review focus on the effect of ultrasound on protein functionality. The presence of transient ultrasonic mechanical waves induce various sonochemical and sonomechanical effects on a protein. Sonochemical effects include the breakage of chains and/or the modification of side groups of aminoacids. Sonomechanical modifications by enhanced molecular agitation, might lead to the transient or permanent modification of the 3D structure of the folded protein. Since the biological function of proteins depends on the maintenance of its 3D folded structure, both sonochemical and sonomechanical effects might affect its properties. A protein might maintain its 3D structure and functionality after minor sonochemical effects, however, the enhanced mass transfer by sonomechanical effects might expose internal hydrophobic residues of the protein, making protein unfolding to an irreversible denatured state. Ultrasound enhanced mass transport effects are unique pathways to change the 3D folded structure of proteins which lead to a new functionality of proteins as support shield materials during the formation microspheres. Enzymes are proteins and their reactions should be conducted in a reactor set-up where enzymes are protected from sonic waves to maximize their catalytic efficiency. In the settlement network of Italian small towns (the so-called “borghi”, with a population ceiling lower than 5000 inhabitants), not lacking in discontinuities and patches, a “common thread” is increasingly noticeable, which allows to look optimistically beyond several weaknesses (economy depending on a relatively unprofitable or declining agriculture, social and economic stasis, demographic decline and consequent contraction of public and private services, hydrogeological instability, etc.): we are talking of the firm, pigheaded determination of an increasing number of local communities to become sustainable and responsible realities, get involved, and undertake a process of “hot authentication” of their milieu. Since 2013, such resilient attitude is at the heart of the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI, Strategia Nazionale per le Aree Interne) aimed at promoting coordinated, multi-scalar projects of self-enhancement, in April 2019, the above innovative form of territorial planning was selected by the European Parliament as a model for the 2021–2027 programming period of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).This paper reviews the original and creative bottom-up enhancement process being implemented in several towns of the “Monti Dauni” sub-region, a pilot marginal area identified by Apulian regional authorities within the SNAI. In these small towns, local players aim at maximizing the opportunities of sustainable, experiential tourism by offering an uncontaminated environment, ancient knowledge, genuine flavours and deep emotions to all visitors who wish to achieve a deeper knowledge of the territorial identity instead of being mere spectators, by adopting an active and engaged attitude.

When magnetic atoms are inserted inside a superconductor, the superconducting order is locally depleted as a result of the antagonistic nature of magnetism and superconductivity. Thereby, distinctive spectral features, known as Yu–Shiba–Rusinov states, appear inside the superconducting gap. The search for Yu–Shiba–Rusinov states in different materials is intense, as they can be used as building blocks to promote Majorana modes suitable for topological quantum computing. Here, the first observation of Yu–Shiba–Rusinov states in graphene, a non-superconducting 2D material, and without the participation of magnetic atoms, is reported. Superconductivity in graphene is induced by proximity effect brought by adsorbing nanometer-scale superconducting Pb islands. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy the superconducting proximity gap is measured in graphene, and Yu–Shiba–Rusinov states are visualized in graphene grain boundaries. The results reveal the very special nature of those Yu–Shiba–Rusinov states, which extends more than 20 nm away from the grain boundaries. These observations provide the long-sought experimental confirmation that graphene grain boundaries host local magnetic moments and constitute the first observation of Yu–Shiba–Rusinov states in a chemically pure system. Using an effective field theory approach to the interactions of higher-spin fields, we evaluate the contribution of an electrically neutral and colour singlet spin-3/2 fermion to (g−2)μ and derive the corresponding constraints on its mass and couplings. These constraints are then compared with the ones on spin-1/2 fermions, such as the vector-like leptons that are predicted by various extensions of the Standard Model, the excited leptons which appear in composite models, as well as the charginos and neutralinos of supersymmetric theories. The accuracy of species-level assignment, and consequent taxonomic coverage, relies on comprehensive DNA barcode reference libraries. The role of these libraries is to support species identification, but accidental errors in the generation of the barcodes may compromise their accuracy. Here, we present an R-based application, Barcode, Audit & Grade System (BAGS) (https://github.com/tadeu95/BAGS), that performs automated auditing and annotation of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences libraries, for a given taxonomic group of animals, available in the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD). This is followed by implementing a qualitative ranking system that assigns one of five grades (A to E) to each species in the reference library, according to the attributes of the data and congruency of species names with sequences clustered in barcode index numbers (BINs). Our goal is to allow researchers to obtain the most useful and reliable data, highlighting and segregating records according to their congruency. Different tests were performed to perceive its usefulness and limitations. BAGS fulfils a significant gap in the current landscape of DNA barcoding research tools by quickly screening reference libraries to gauge the congruence status of data and facilitate the triage of ambiguous data for posterior review. The search of compounds emitting in the near-infrared (NIR) has been accelerated owing to their use in biomedical and telecommunications applications. In this regard, nanographenes (NGs) are attractive materials adequate for integration with other technologies, which have recently demonstrated amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and lasing across the visible spectrum. Here, the optical and ASE properties of four-zigzag edged NGs of the [m,n]peri-acenoacene family are reported, whose size is increased through conjugation extension by varying n (from 3 to 5) while keeping m = 2. Results show that such 1D conjugation extension method is more efficient in terms of shifting the photoluminescence (PL) to the infrared (PL at 710 nm in the larger compound, PP-Ar) than through 2D conjugation extension as in previously reported NGs (PL at 676 nm with the largest compound FZ3, with n = 3 and m = 4). Additionally, PP-Ar shows dual-ASE (at 726 and 787 nm), whose origin is elucidated through Raman and transient absorption spectroscopies. These compounds’ potential for red and NIR lasing is demonstrated through the fabrication of distributed feedback lasers with top-layer resonators. This study paves the way towards the development of stable low-cost all-plastic NIR lasers. Malaria is an infectious disease, highly prevalent in world regions with lacking healthcare conditions. Nowadays, malaria diagnostic methods in these endemic regions are mainly based on microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests by immunochromatographic assays. Here, it is presented an optical diagnostic method, based on reflectance spectrophotometry, through hemozoin (Hz) quantification, towards an innovative non-invasive malaria diagnostic device. Therefore, a set of optical filters, with high transmittance and low full width at half maximum (FWHM) at specific wavelengths, is designed for being integrated in the device. These allow the full reconstruction of the optical reflectance spectrum, able to distinguish between healthy and infected samples, with a detection limit up to 12.5 parasites/μl of red blood cells. This work presents the design, performance simulation, and optimization of 16 highly selective narrow band-pass optical filters, based on multilayer stacks of SiO2/TiO2 thin films. The optical properties of the thin films layer materials, in particular the refractive indexes, are the main focus in this study. Three different reflective indexes were evaluated and the results showed that, for all the simulated conditions, each filter is sensitive to a single wavelength with a FWHM < 25 nm and peak transmittance intensity > 90%, but slight variations were observed for the different refractive indexes. Under the assumption that K has C2 boundary with strictly positive geodesic curvature we compute the first variation formula of perimeter for sets with C2 boundary. The localization of the variational formula in the non-singular part of the boundary, composed of the points where the tangent plane is not horizontal, allows us to define a mean curvature function HK out of the singular set. In the case of non-vanishing mean curvature, the condition that HK be constant implies that the non-singular portion of the boundary is foliated by horizontal liftings of translations of ∂K dilated by a factor of 1HK. Based on this we can define a sphere SK with constant mean curvature 1 by considering the union of all horizontal liftings of ∂K starting from (0,0,0) until they meet again in a point of the vertical axis. [EN] Taking into account the public health importance of the human papillomavirus (HPV) control in the future, it is mandatory to assess the effect of the vaccination campaigns on the control of HPV spread and the associated diseases using reliable mathematical models. We propose a computational random network model with the aim of studying the transmission dynamics of HPV infections. This model reflects the herd immunity effect in the heterosexual network more accurately than the classical models. We perform a sensitivity analysis of the sexual behavior changes consisting of increasing the number of men who have sex with men (MSM), increasing the frequency of the intercourses and increasing the number of sexual partners. We find that large changes in the sexual behavior, in some extent, only have minor effects on the decline of the HPV infections in women and men in the current vaccination campaign in Spain (vaccination of young girls with a coverage of 70%). Therefore, the current vaccination program in Spain is robust for the heterosexuals. However, we cannot say the same for MSM, where they do not benefit by the herd immunity effect of the vaccination of girls, and consequently, the circulation of the virus among them remains unchanged. Lipids are widely distributed in nature and are one of the most important components of natural foods, synthetic compounds, and emulsions. To date, there is a strong social demand in the industrial sector for the use of sustainable products with a minimal environmental impact. Depending on their origin and composition, lipids can be employed as a plausible alternative as biodegradable lubricants in order to reduce the use of conventional mineral oil lubricants and mitigate their environmental impact. This perspective provides an overview of the advantages and constrains of vegetal oils under different lubrication regimes and the tribochemical reactions that can take place. Also, the different factors and pathways that influence their oxidation, the key role of moisture, and the changes of physical properties under pressure and temperature are reviewed. Special emphasis is devoted to the oxidation instability of fatty acids and vegetal oils and the physical and chemical approaches to improve oxidative and thermal stability are described in detail.
