In order to promote the cleavage technology of GaAs, this paper explored the influence of the crystallographic orientation of mechanical properties on the quality of cleavage plane. Systematic theoretical models of certain key mechanical properties were proposed, and the mechanism of crack formation along two different directions during the cleavage process was discussed. The indentation tests were used to evaluate the crack formation and indentation morphology. A series of cleavage experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of mechanical properties and crack formation on the cleavage process. The results show that the Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and Vickers hardness in the (100) plane along the directions are 121.26 GPa, 0.02 and 5.757 GPa, respectively, and the values along the directions are 85.26 GPa, 0.31 and 6.091 GPa, respectively. Combining theoretical calculations and indentation test results, the average fracture toughness in the directions is approximately 10.94% higher than that in the directions. Meanwhile, scratching along the directions helps reduce the damage width. The {110} plane is a favorable cleavage plane in GaAs. These findings indicate that cleaving along the directions with a low fracture toughness is much easier to obtain a smooth cleavage plane. In addition, this paper proposed a useable theoretical and experimental approach to calculate mechanical properties for obtaining high-quality cleavage planes that can be widely used in other semiconductor materials.

Digital microfluidic biochips (DMFBs) have been a revolutionary platform for automating and miniaturizing laboratory procedures with the advantages of flexibility and reconfigurability. The placement problem is one of the most challenging issues in the design automation of DMFBs. It contains three interacting NP-hard sub-problems: resource binding, operation scheduling, and module placement. Besides, during the optimization of placement, complex constraints must be satisfied to guarantee feasible solutions, such as precedence constraints, storage constraints, and resource constraints. In this article, a new placement method for DMFB is proposed based on an evolutionary algorithm with novel heuristic-based decoding strategies for both operation scheduling and module placement. Specifically, instead of using the previous list scheduler and path scheduler for decoding operation scheduling chromosomes, we introduce a new heuristic scheduling algorithm (called order scheduler) with fewer limitations on the search space for operation scheduling solutions. Besides, a new 3D placer that combines both scheduling and placement is proposed where the usage of the microfluidic array over time in the chip is recorded flexibly, which is able to represent more feasible solutions for module placement. Compared with the state-of-the-art placement methods (T-tree and 3D-DDM), the experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method based on several real-world bioassay benchmarks. The proposed method can find the optimal results with the minimum assay completion time for all test cases.

Summary Although great progress is being made toward improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and the operational stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), little attention is being paid to their mechanical reliability, which is particularly important for flexible PSCs (f-PCSs). Here, we have grown low-dimensional (LD) metal-halide perovskite (MHP) thin capping layer over the 3D MHP light-absorber thin film in f-PSCs in situ to improve their mechanical reliability. This resulted in f-PSCs with unprecedented, simultaneous improvements in PCE (21.0%), operational stability (T90, retention of 90% of the initial PCE, >800 h), and bending durability (T80 = 20,000 tension-only bending cycles). These synergistic virtuous effects are attributed to the LD MHP capping layer enhancing photocarriers extraction, providing protection against the environment, and “sealing” surface flaws on the 3D MHP thin film. The latter reduces the propensity for cracking in bending, which results in improved environmental stability and bending durability.

In this paper, the exhaustive usage and implementation of Streamline-Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin method combining with Stabilized Pressure Gradient Projection (SUPG/SPGP) for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are investigated. We validate and explore the behavior of cell-based smoothed finite element method (CS-FEM) and finite element method (FEM) based on SUPG/SPGP on five numerical examples. First, the Taylor-Green vortex example shows that CS-FEM based on SUPG/SPGP (CSFEM-SUPG/SPGP) are more accurate and has better robustness against distorted mesh than that of FEM based on SUPG/SPGP (FEM-SUPG/SPGP). Moreover, the wider range of SPGP stability parameter for CS-FEM-SUPG/SPGP is found in the condition of maintaining accurate result. Meanwhile, the lid-driven cavity flow example shows that the SUPG/SPGP method is favorable for incompressible flow at relatively high Reynolds number. The other numerical examples show good performances of the proposed method on the unsteady flows and micro-channel flow. In summary, proposed CS-FEM-SUPG/SPGP shows good performances on obtaining accurate results.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate a novel stabilization scheme to handle convection and pressure oscillation in the process of solving incompressible laminar flows by finite element method (FEM). Design/methodology/approach The semi-implicit stabilization scheme, characteristic-based polynomial pressure projection (CBP3) consists of the Characteristic-Galerkin method and polynomial pressure projection. Theoretically, the proposed scheme works for any type of element using equal-order approximation for velocity and pressure. In this work, linear 3-node triangular and 4-node tetrahedral elements are the focus, which are the simplest but most difficult elements for pressure stabilizations. Findings The present paper proposes a new scheme, which can stabilize FEM solution for flows of both low and relatively high Reynolds numbers. And the influence of stabilization parameters of the CBP3 scheme has also been investigated. Research limitations/implications The research in this work is limited to the laminar incompressible flow. Practical implications The verification and validation of the CBP3 scheme are conducted by several 2 D and 3 D numerical examples. The scheme could be used to deal with more practical fluid problems. Social implications The application of scheme to study complex hemodynamics of patient-specific abdominal aortic aneurysm is also presented, which demonstrates its potential to solve bio-flows. Originality/value The paper simulated 2 D and 3 D numerical examples with superior results compared to existing results and experiments. The novel CBP3 scheme is verified to be very effective in handling convection and pressure oscillation.

The perovskite solar cell has emerged rapidly in the field of photovoltaics as it combines the merits of low cost, high efficiency, and excellent mechanical flexibility for versatile applications. However, there are significant concerns regarding its operational stability and mechanical robustness. Most of the previously reported approaches to address these concerns entail separate engineering of perovskite and charge-transporting layers. Herein we present a holistic design of perovskite and charge-transporting layers by synthesizing an interpenetrating perovskite/electron-transporting-layer interface. This interface is reaction-formed between a tin dioxide layer containing excess organic halide and a perovskite layer containing excess lead halide. Perovskite solar cells with such interfaces deliver efficiencies up to 22.2% and 20.1% for rigid and flexible versions, respectively. Long-term (1000 h) operational stability is demonstrated and the flexible devices show high endurance against mechanical-bending (2500 cycles) fatigue. Mechanistic insights into the relationship between the interpenetrating interface structure and performance enhancement are provided based on comprehensive, advanced, microscopic characterizations. This study highlights interface integrity as an important factor for designing efficient, operationally-stable, and mechanically-robust solar cells., Operational stability and mechanical robustness remain as engineering bottlenecks in perovskite solar cells technology. Here, Dong et al. introduce an interpenetrating perovskite at the electron-transporting-layer interface that enables a 1000-hour stable operation and high endurance against bending fatigue over 2500 cycles.

The Periodontal Ligament (PDL) plays a very important role in load transmission between the teeth and alveolar bone. To capture biomechanical responses of Orthodontics, numerical analysis need to consider multiple types of materials: incompressible visco-hyperelastic for the PDL and compressible elastic for teeth. This article proposes a unified-implementation of smoothed finite element methods (UI-SFEM), which enables the use of different types of smoothing domains for different materials. It has several important properties: (1) A UI-SFEM model can use any types of smoothing domains in a combination as desired for complex systems. (2) The choice of the smoothing domain types can be done in a single model based on the user needs (material properties, incompressible numerical problems). (3) It provides a framework for designing models with different solution properties. Numerical experiments show that the UI-SFEM is efficient and robust against mesh distortion, which is works particularity well for complex biological systems.

A spectrum-domain method, called full-matrix phase shift migration (FM-PSM), is presented for transcranial ultrasound phase correction and imaging with ideal synthetic aperture focusing technology. The simulated data obtained using the pseudospectral time-domain method are used to evaluate the feasibility of the method. The experimental data measured from a 3-D printed skull phantom are used to evaluate the algorithm performance in terms of resolution, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and eccentricity comparing with the classical ray-tracing delay and sum (DAS) method. In wire imaging experiment, FM-PSM has a lateral resolution of 0.22 mm and ray-tracing DAS has a lateral resolution of 0.24 mm measured at −6-dB drop using a transducer with a center frequency of 6.25 MHz. In cylinder imaging experiment, FM-PSM has a CNR of 2.14 and ray-tracing DAS has a CNR of 1.82, which illustrates about 17% improvement. For a ${J}$ -element array and an output image with pixels ${M} \times {N}$ (lateral $\times $ axial), the computational cost of the DAS is of ${O}{(}{J} \times {M}^{{2}}\times {N}^{{2}}{)}$ ; on the contrary, it reduces to ${O}{(}{J} \times {M} \times {N}^{{2}}{)}$ with the proposed FM-PSM. The results suggest that FM-PSM is an efficiency method for transcranial ultrasonic imaging.

This study deals with free, forced undamped vibration and the random, damped vibration of an inhomogeneous beam composed of two materials with significantly different elastic moduli and material densities. Exact solution is obtained for natural frequencies and the mode shapes using Krylov-Duncan functions, along with the comparison with the results furnished by the Galerkin's method. Random vibrations of the bi-material beams are studied for the first time in the literature for the case of proportional damping. Novel element of this study consists in the unintuitive finding that the response of the bi-material beam may considerably exceed the responses of its homogeneous counterparts, composed of a single material. This finding appears of design significance, suggesting that the natural frequencies of the bi-material beam must be made so as to lie above the cutoff frequency of broad-band cutted white noise.

As a rapid proliferating tissue, tumor cells have to optimize nutrient utilization to withstand harsh conditions. Several approaches have been explored to inhibit the growth and metastasis of tumor by disrupting the reprogrammed tumor metabolism. However, nutrient limitations within solid tumors may induce the metabolic flexibility of malignant cells to sustain growth and survival using one nutrient to fill metabolite pools normally supplied by the other. To overcome this predicament, a promising click-nucleic-acid-containing platform for codelivery of rapamycin, anti-PFKFB4 siRNA, and targeting ligand aptamer AS1411 was applied. PFKFB4 could act as a promising target for tumor therapy for being a molecular fulcrum that could couple glycolysis to autophagy by promoting aggressive metastatic tumors. The downregulation of PFKFB4 can help inhibit the SRC3/Akt/mTOR pathway, leading autophagy to the direction of promoting apoptosis of tumor cells, which is induced by the collapse of tumor cellular homeostasis, while low dosages of rapamycin could decrease surgery-induced immune dysfunction. Enhanced tumor autophagy, favorable in vivo antitumor efficacy, and effective systematic immune activation are observed after treatment, suggesting that autophagy and glycolysis can serve as an integrated target for tumor treatment.

Detailed understanding of stellar physics is essential towards a robust determination of stellar properties (e.g. radius, mass, and age). Among the vital input physics used in the modelling of solar-type stars which remain poorly constrained, is the initial helium abundance. To this end, when constructing stellar model grids, the initial helium abundance is estimated either (i) by using the semi-empirical helium-to-heavy element enrichment ratio, (ΔY/ΔZ), anchored to the standard big bang nucleosynthesis value, or (ii) by setting the initial helium abundance as a free variable. Adopting 35 low-mass, solar-type stars with multiyear Kepler photometry from the asteroseismic ‘LEGACY’ sample, we explore the systematic uncertainties on the inferred stellar parameters (i.e. radius, mass, and age) arising from the treatment of the initial helium abundance in stellar model grids. The stellar masses and radii derived from grids with free initial helium abundance are lower compared to those from grids based on a fixed ΔY/ΔZ ratio. We find the systematic uncertainties on mean density, radius, mass, and age arising from grids which employ a fixed value of ΔY/ΔZ and those with free initial helium abundance to be ∼ 0.9 per cent, ∼ 2 per cent, ∼ 5 per cent, and ∼ 29 per cent, respectively. We report that the systematic uncertainties on the inferred masses and radii arising from the treatment of initial helium abundance in stellar grids lie within the expected accuracy limits of ESA’s PLATO, although this is not the case for the age. © 2020 The Author(s)., The authors acknowledge the dedicated team behind the NASA'S Kepler missions. Ginseng has been used as a functional food and tonic for enhancing immune power. Here, the potential protective effect of 20S-protopanaxatriol (M4), the metabolite of protopanaxatriol, against hepatic fibrosis is investigated, which could provide nutritional interventions for disease treatment. M4 could inhibit extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and reduce the levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as caspase 1, interleukin 1 β (IL-1β), interleukin 1 receptor type 1 (IL1R1), and interleukin 6 (IL-6). M4 also significantly increased the expression of farnesoid X receptor (FXR), suppressed the purinergic ligand-gated ion channel 7 receptor (P2X7r) signaling pathway, and works as an FXR agonist, GW4064. In thioacetamide (TAA)-induced mice, M4 could attenuate the histopathological changes and significantly regulate the expression levels of FXR and P2X7r. M4 ameliorated TAA-induced hepatic fibrosis due to the reduction of P2X7r secretion, inhibition of hepatic stellate cell (HSCs) activation, and inflammation, which were all associated with FXR activation. Hence, M4 might be useful a nutritional preventive approach in antihepatic fibrosis and antihepatic inflammation.

Gas turbine efficiency can be improved by increasing the operating temperature and by reducing the need for cooling air, both of which are enabled by higher temperature materials. Silicon carbide based ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) have shown promise for achieving higher temperatures. However, to survive in the high-temperature high-humidity combustion environment, environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are essential to limit silicon loss of CMCs and its associated damage. Atmospheric plasma spray (APS) is a popular process for making such coatings. Drug delivery systems (DDSs) are of paramount importance to deliver drugs at the intended targets, e.g., tumor cells or tissue by prolonging blood circulation and optimizing the pharmaceutical profiles. However, the therapeutic efficacy of DDSs is severely impaired by insufficient or non-specific drug release. Dynamic chemical bonds having stimuli-liable properties are therefore introduced into DDSs for regulating the drug release kinetics. This review summarizes the recent advances of dynamic covalent chemistry in the DDSs for improving cancer therapy. The review discusses the constitutions of the major classes of dynamic covalent bonds, and the respective applications in the tumor-targeted DDSs which are based on the different responsive mechanisms, including acid-activatable and reduction-activatable. Furthermore, the review also discusses combination strategies of dual dynamic covalent bonds which can response to the complex tumor microenvironment much more accurately, and then summarizes and analyzes the prospects for the application of dynamic covalent chemistry in DDSs.

To solve the problem of inaccurate boundary identification and to eliminate the spurious pressure oscillation in the previously developed immersed smoothed point interpolation method (IS-PIM), a new sharp-interface IS-PIM combining mass conservation algorithm, called Sharp-ISPIM-Mass, is proposed in this work. Based on the so called sharp-interface method, the technique of quadratic local velocity reconstruction has been developed by combining with the mass conservation algorithm, which enables the present method improve the accuracy of the velocity field and satisfy the mass conservation condition near the boundary field. So the proposed method would not encounter the problem of spurious mass flux. In addition, a new form of FSI force evaluation considering pressure and viscous force to perform a whole function from the fluid domain to fictitious fluid domain is introduced, which makes the present method obtain more accurate results of FSI force than the original one. Through the numerical studies of a number of benchmark examples, the performance of the Sharp-ISPIM-Mass has been examined and illustrated.

Time-dependent reliability analysis using surrogate model has drawn much attention for avoiding the high computational burden. But the surrogate training strategies of existing methods do not directly consider the estimation error of failure probability, leading to the limitations that some computationally expensive samples are wasted or some algorithms tend to terminate prematurely. To address the challenges, this work proposes a real-time estimation error-guided sampling method. As the classification of random points may be not completely accurate, the wrong-classification probability is calculated by using the mean and variance of Kriging prediction. With this probability, the total numbers of wrongly classified points are obtained. Furthermore, the confidence intervals of the numbers are computed based on the probability theory, and the estimation error of failure probability is calculated through the confidence intervals. Subsequently, the point maximizing the probability is identified as the new sample for decreasing the estimation error, and the maximum error is used to guide when to stop the refinement of Kriging model. Results of three cases demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

We present an analysis of the first 20 second cadence light curves obtained by the TESS space telescope during its extended mission. We find improved precision of 20 second data compared to 2 minute data for bright stars when binned to the same cadence (˜10%-25% better for T ? 8 mag, reaching equal precision at T ˜ 13 mag), consistent with pre-flight expectations based on differences in cosmic-ray mitigation algorithms. We present two results enabled by this improvement. First, we use 20 second data to detect oscillations in three solar analogs (? Pav, ? Tuc, and p Men) and use asteroseismology to measure their radii, masses, densities, and ages to ˜1%, ˜3%, ˜1%, and ˜20% respectively, including systematic errors. Combining our asteroseismic ages with chromospheric activity measurements, we find evidence that the spread in the activity-age relation is linked to stellar mass and thus the depth of the convection zone. Second, we combine 20 second data and published radial velocities to recharacterize p Men c, which is now the closest transiting exoplanet for which detailed asteroseismology of the host star is possible. We show that p Men c is located at the upper edge of the planet radius valley for its orbital period, confirming that it has likely retained a volatile atmosphere and that the "asteroseismic radius valley"remains devoid of planets. This paper reports the effect of thermal ageing on the space charge characteristics, DC conductivities and trap energy distributions of 320 kV HVDC XLPE. Specimens were prepared by a heating press method in the laboratory. The specimens were placed in a thermal oven and thermally aged at 130 °C up to 30 days. Space charges were measured by a pulsed electro-acoustic setup. The results showed that the reference samples had limited hetero charge accumulations near both electrodes in the samples. The homo-charge accumulation was appeared with an increase of the aged time. The space charge accumulation in the samples was transferred from hetero-charge accumulation to homo-charge accumulation with an increase of the ageing time. The electric field distribution in the sample gradually increased with the appearance of the homo-charge accumulation, whereas the homo charges evidently distorted the electric field in the samples with the increasing ageing time. The DC conductivities of the aged samples consistently increased with the increase of the measured electric field. The obtained results of apparent mobility of the charge carriers, the activation energy and the trap energy density illustrated that thermal ageing could facilitate the homo-charge accumulation in the sample. The dominant effect of thermal ageing on the sample was elucidated by using various analytical techniques. It was found that the thermal ageing would affect the material properties and facilitate the increase of the trap energy density and the space charge accumulations in the samples.

Hill, Michelle L., et al., Giant stars as known exoplanet hosts are relatively rare due to the potential challenges in acquiring precision radial velocities and the small predicted transit depths. However, these giant host stars are also some of the brightest in the sky and so enable high signal-to-noise ratio follow-up measurements. Here, we report on new observations of the bright (V ∼ 3.3) giant star ι Draconis (ι Dra), known to host a planet in a highly eccentric ∼511 day period orbit. TESS observations of the star over 137 days reveal asteroseismic signatures, allowing us to constrain the stellar radius, mass, and age to ∼2%, ∼6%, and ∼28%, respectively. We present the results of continued radial-velocity monitoring of the star using the Automated Planet Finder over several orbits of the planet. We provide more precise planet parameters of the known planet and, through the combination of our radial-velocity measurements with Hipparcos and Gaia astrometry, we discover an additional long-period companion with an orbital period of ∼ {68} {-36} {+60} yr. Mass predictions from our analysis place this substellar companion on the border of the planet and brown dwarf regimes. We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction JK, which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the t-JK model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has a dominant quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. In the pairing channel, the even-parity superconducting correlation is dominant with d-wave-like symmetry, which oscillates in sign as a function of separation with a period equal to that of the spin-density wave and two times the charge-density wave. Although these correlations fall rapidly (possibly exponentially) at long distances, this is never-the-less the example where a pair-density wave is the leading instability in the pairing channel on the honeycomb lattice.

The larvae of the deep-sea pandalid shrimp Heterocarpus fascirostratus Yang, Chan & Kumar, 2018 were successfully hatched and cultured to the third zoeal stage. The larvae reached the third zoeal stage nine days after hatching at a water temperature of 21 ± 1 °C. Although members of Heterocarpus A. Milne-Edwards, 1881 have rather diverse body forms and are often separated into many species groups, the early zoeal morphology of H. fascirostratus follows the general developmental pattern of the species in Heterocarpus. The main differences amongst these larvae are body size, spines on the anteroventral margin of the carapace, and the endopod setation of the third maxilliped.

The uncertainty analysis of structures generally involves uncertain parameters of different types. In order to derive predictions regarding uncertain structural responses, it is crucial to represent the uncertainty appropriately according to the underlying information available. This paper presents a unified framework for uncertainty analysis under probabilistic, evidence, fuzzy and interval uncertainties, by which the quantities with sufficient data, sparse data, and subjective information can be simultaneously considered. A Taylor expansion-based unified uncertainty analysis (T-UUA) method is first proposed for small uncertainty problems. By temporarily neglecting the evidence, fuzzy and interval variables, the probability-evidence-interval-fuzzy model is degraded into a random problem, in which the expectations and variances of responses can be obtained as functions in terms of evidence, interval and fuzzy uncertainties. Then, through dealing with the evidence variables, the previous expectations and variances are further expressed as a summation of functions in terms of fuzzy and interval variables with basic probability assignments (BPAs). The fuzziness is then discretized by using α -cut technique and thus the expectations and variances are further expressed as functions of only intervals. Afterwards, by reconsidering the interval uncertainties, the bounds of the expectations and variances are computed via combining Taylor expansion with interval arithmetic. In addition, a dimensional reduction (DR)/efficient global optimization (EGO)-based unified uncertainty analysis (DR/EGO-UUA) method is also presented to solve the large uncertainty problems. The framework of DR/EGO-UUA is similar as T-UUA. However, in DR/EGO-UUA, the second moments of responses are computed by DR integrations, and their upper and lower bounds are calculated by the EGO. Finally, three numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

The intrinsic trafficking ability of host cells to infiltrate various disease sites and act as living chaperones for chemotherapeutics alone or chemotherapeutics-loaded nanoparticles to actively transmigrate the endothelial barrier within solid tumor and achieve efficient tumor accumulation is being explored in a quantity of contexts. Here, we leveraged tumor-infiltrating T lymphocytes as delivery vehicle to increase the tumor apoptosis and immunogenic cell death (ICD) of doxorubicin to efficiently boost immune response and eliminate the tumor growth. First we decorated the redox responsive doxorubicin-albumin conjugates (DOX-A) onto the surface of T lymphocytes (DOX-A@T cell) via a pH sensitive bond, which allows for stable retention of DOX-A on the surface of T lymphocytes in blood circulation but the responsive release of DOX-A within the weak acid tumor microenvironment. The released DOX-A exerted deep tumor penetration, efficient tumor cell uptake and rapid intracellular drug release via redox responsive cleavage. We showed that DOX-A can be stably conjugated to the surface of T lymphocytes for at least 6 h without any detectable toxicity or interference with intrinsic cell functions. DOX-A@T cell had the strong tumor infiltration and penetration both in vitro and in vivo. More significantly, this DOX-A@T cell actively efficiently augmented the DOX-induced ICD efficacy through activation of dendritic cells (DCs) and consequent activation of specific T cell response, thus potentiating immune response in tumor microenvironment.

Some time-dependent reliability analysis methods use surrogate models to approximate the implicit limit state functions of complex systems. However, the performance of these methods is usually affected by the situations that the used models are not accurate and some samples have no significant contribution to the accuracy improvement. To construct a more suitable model for reliability analysis, this work proposes an active failure-pursuing Kriging modeling method to identify the most valuable samples for improving the accuracy of the predicted failure probability. On the one hand, a global predicted failure probability error index calculated through the real-time reliability result is proposed to pursue the sensitive sample and the corresponding local region that is most likely to maximize the improvement of the accuracy of the reliability result. A fault-tolerant scheme is further applied to ensure the accuracy of the failure-pursuing process. On the other hand, the correlation-based screening and space partition strategy is developed to describe the local regions and avoid the clustering of samples. In each iteration, the Kriging model is updated with the exploitation of new sample from the local regions around the sensitive samples. Additionally, an equivalent stochastic process transformation is developed to form a uniform high probability density sampling space. The results of three cases demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy and stability of the proposed method.

In practical engineering applications, random variables may follow multimodal distributions with multiple modes in the probability density functions, such as the structural fatigue stress of a steel bridge carrying both highway and railway traffic and the vibratory load of a blade subject to stochastic dynamic excitations, etc. Traditional probabilistic uncertainty propagation methods are mainly used to treat random variables with only unimodal distributions, which, therefore, tend to result in large computational errors when multimodal distributions are involved. In this paper, a high-precision probabilistic uncertainty propagation method is proposed for problems involving multimodal distributions. Firstly, the multimodal probability density functions of input random variables are constructed based on the Gaussian mixture model. Secondly, the high-order moments of the response function are calculated using the univariate dimension reduction method, based on which the input uncertainty is effectively propagated. Thirdly, the probability density function of the response is estimated using the maximum entropy method. Finally, a convergence mechanism is formulated to help ensure the uncertainty propagation accuracy. Two mathematical problems and two truss structures are investigated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Macromolecular protein drugs are promising anti-neoplastic agents based on their precise tumor affinity and innocuousness to normal tissues. Although direct delivery of protein drugs remains impractical due to its short half-life in circulation, inefficiency in tumor accumulation, and poor penetrability in intratumoral distribution. Recently, biogenetic cell-based drug vectors have been widely reported for antitumor drug delivery. Macrophage is naturally independent with endogenous proteolysis, elimination of reticuloendothelial system, and immune surveillance. Meanwhile, its innate recruitment behaviors responsive to chronic inflammation signals make it a potential cellular vector for tumor targeting drug delivery. In this study, we develop a trained macrophage bioreactor for tumor homing and an in situ expression of fused antitumor protein. The recombinant tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis-inducing ligand is coded on a plasmid vector with penetrating domain on the C terminus, which improves the intratumoral distribution by facilitating protein dispersion in tumor tissue after in situ secretion. The combination of tumor-infiltrating macrophage bioreactor and multifunctional fused protein drug embodies a new effective tumor homing system for antitumor protein delivery.

Graphene as a novel additive in low density polyethylene (LDPE), high density polyethylene–low density polyethylene blend (10%HDPE–LDPE) and polypropylene–low density polyethylene blend (10%PP–LDPE), is investigated for promising eco-friendly insulating materials in high voltage cables. The composites with graphene amounts of 0, 0.002 wt%, 0.02 wt%, and 0.2 wt% are prepared by the solution mixing method. With attempt to disclose the structure–property relationships, the composites are extensively characterized by physical techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, and electrical measurements including electrical treeing, direct current conductivity and space charge distributions. Results show that graphene can significantly enhances the thermal stability of LDPE and 10%PP–LDPE, slightly decrease the degree of crystallinity, change the size of the crystal diameters, and improve the phase distribution of the polymer blends. Consequently, graphene can prolong the electrical tree initiation time and block the extension of electrical tree. Besides, it can modulate the trap distributions, which will further change the conductivity and ability to suppress space charge accumulations. This excellent performance of graphene could be attributed to its good exfoliation, uniform dispersion and outstretched morphology in the polymer matrix, as well as its strong ability to capture electrons.

This paper presents investigations on a usage of graphene as a voltage stabilizer for polyethylene blends in the potential recyclable high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable insulation. Thermal and electrical properties of the blends with/without graphene were evaluated by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electrical treeing tests, DC conductivity and space charge measurements. Trap energy distributions in the blends were estimated using the measured space charge decay data. The obtained results show that additive-like amounts of graphene can improve the thermal stability of the polyethylene blends. The influence of the graphene on the tree inception voltage (TIV) of the polyethylene blends is not significant, whereas the low density polyethylene/high density polyethylene (LDPE/HDPE) with/without graphene demonstrates the highest TIV comparing to the LDPE, LDPE/polypropylene, and their corresponding graphene added materials. It is found that the DC conductivity of the polyethylene blends with/without graphene increases consistently with the increase of the temperature. The conductivity of the LDPE/HDPE decreases apparently with the inclusion of graphene. It has been shown that space charge accumulations can be suppressed by the addition of graphene in the polyethylene blends. It is postulated that the high trap level and trap energy density of the polyethylene blends with graphene are closely connected to the suppression of the space charge accumulation in the blends.

By exploring the auxiliary information from gradients, the accuracy of Kriging model can be improved. However, the dramatically increased time for model training tends to be unaffordable. Therefore, a novel gradient-enhanced Kriging modeling method which utilizes only a partial set of gradients, is developed in this article. Within the framework of this method, a balance between model accuracy and modeling efficiency can be achieved. More specifically, the influence of each input variable on output is estimated and ranked by feature selection technique. Then an empirical evaluation rule is proposed to facilitate the selection of gradients. Five representative numerical benchmarks from 10-D to 30-D and an airfoil optimal shape design with 18 variables are used for validation. Results show that when compared with the conventional Gradient-enhanced Kriging, the modeling time of the proposed method is significantly reduced, while the loss of accuracy is negligible. As a consequence, the proposed surrogate modeling method can provide an alternative way for approximating high-dimensional problems.

Brittle scratches are responsible for the damage ignition when exposed to pulsed UV laser. We investigated the morphology evolution and damage resistance of glass with HF etching. The light intensity around scratches is found to increase with the dimension of scratches. Laser damage tends to be initiated at scratches edge and this is correlated with the peak electrical/light intensification and/or the mechanical weakening due to the chevron-cracks along the scratch. Moreover, the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) fluctuates when the length of chevron cracks varied and/or the electric/light intensification factor (LIF) is increased with the size of scratches in chemical etching.

A fully Lagrangian model for simulating impinging jet flows containing abrasive particles is established based on smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. In the model, both the fluid and the solid are described by SPH, where the jet flow is modeled as the viscous fluid and the metallic target is modeled as the elastic–plastic material. The main novelty of the model is that abrasive particles are explicitly included in the jet flow and modeled as arbitrarily shaped rigid bodies. The interactions among the fluid, solid and abrasives are modeled through suitable techniques that are commonly used in SPH. The simulation of material removal caused by the impact of continuous abrasive-jet flow is conducted as a challenging example to verify the applicability of the model. This new model is attractive for relevant applications, such as solid particle erosion and abrasive water-jet machining. The advantages of the model lie in its conceptual simplicity, straightforward implementation and the relative ease of incorporating new physics.

A novel naked-eye colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probe (B-ClO) was transformed from anthracene-hydrazone to anthracene-triazole based on a HClO-mediated cyclization reaction with an F434 nm/F570 nm ratio in quantitative response to HClO. The B-ClO probe exhibited high sensitivity (limit of detection of 14 nM) and a fast response time to ClO− over other competing species as well as across a wide pH range. Study of the sensing mechanism supported a HClO-mediated cyclization reaction in which 1,2,4-triazole forms via HClO and a hydrazone derivative, with excellent photophysical properties. Such a probe was used as B-ClO test strips and B-ClO silica materials to monitor HClO in the environment, exhibiting excellent solid properties.

Organophosphate esters (OPs) are substitutes for polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants. China is the largest producer of OPs globally, with the production rate increasing at 15% annually. Since some OPs are neurodevelopmental and/or carcinogenic toxicants, human exposure is a concern. In this study, concentrations of eight OP metabolites (mOPs) were measured in human urine samples collected from 13 cities located in Northern, Eastern, Southern, and Southwestern China. All target mOPs were frequently detected with detection rates of 50% to 100%, indicating widespread human exposure to OPs. Bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP; median: 0.68 ng/mL), bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPP; 0.30 ng/mL), diphenyl phosphate (DPHP; 0.30 ng/mL), and dibutyl phosphate (DBP; 0.29 ng/mL) were the dominant mOPs across all participants. Regional differences in concentrations (ΣmOPs varied from 0.86 to 3.7 ng/mL) and composition profiles (contribution of chlorinated mOPs to ΣmOPs varied from 35% to 95%) of mOPs were observed within China. In comparison to the concentrations reported worldwide, urinary DPHP and bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCIPP) levels in China were lower, whereas BCEP and DBP levels were comparable or higher. The total daily intake (TDI) of tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) were estimated from daily urine excretion rate and the fraction of OP metabolized in human liver microsomes (TDIHLM) or S9 fraction (TDIS9). The intake estimates showed that Chinese residents were exposed to TCEP from 96.9 to 46,700 (or 52.2 to 25,200) ng/kg bw/day. Depending on the reference dose, we found that approximately 5% of the individuals exceeded the limit (i.e., 2200 ng/kg bw/day) for TCEP intake. To our knowledge, this is the first nationwide baseline survey to determine urinary levels of mOPs in Chinese residents. As a kind of imprecise probabilistic model, probability-box (P-box) model can deal with both aleatory and epistemic uncertainties in parameters effectively. The P-box can generally be categorized into two classes, namely, parameterized P-box and non-parameterized P-box. Currently, the researches involving P-boxes mainly aim at the parameterized P-box, while the works handling the non-parameterized P-box are relatively inadequate. This paper proposes an efficient uncertainty propagation analysis method based on cumulative distribution function discretization (CDFD) for problems with non-parameterized P-boxes, through which the bounds of statistical moments and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of a response function with non-parameterized P-box variables can be obtained. First, a series of linear programming models are established for acquiring the lower and upper bounds of the first four origin moments of the response function. Second, based on the bounds of the origin moments, the CDF bounds for the response function can be obtained using Johnson distributions fitting and an optimization approach based on percentiles. Finally, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are verified by investigating two numerical examples.

Though many scholars and practitioners are paying more attention to the health and life of the public after the COVID-19 outbreak, extant literature has so far failed to explore the variation of ambient air quality during this pandemic. The current study attempts to fill the gap by disentangling the causal effects of epidemic prevention on air quality in China, measured by the individual pollutant dimensionless index, from other confounding factors. Using the fixed effects model, this article finds that five air indicators, PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO2, and SO2, significantly improved during the shutdown period, with NO2 showing the most improvement. On the contrary, O3 shows an inverse pattern, that is, O3 gets worse unexpectedly. The positive impact of epidemic prevention on air quality, especially in terms of PM2.5, PM10, and NO2, become manifest five days after the resumption of labor, indicated by the result of a regression discontinuity design. These findings are still robust and consistent after the dataset of 2019 as a counterfactual sample is utilized. The findings of this paper make contributions to both environmental governance and pandemic prevention, with relevant guidelines regarding the health and life of the public and governmental behavioral management strategies discussed.

Current therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer's disease (AD) treatments mainly focus on β-amyloid (Aβ) targeting. However, such therapeutic strategies have limited clinical outcomes due to the chronic and irreversible impairment of the nervous system in the late stage of AD. Recently, inflammatory responses, manifested in oxidative stress and glial cell activation, have been reported as hallmarks in the early stages of AD. Based on the crosstalk between inflammatory response and brain cells, a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive dendrimer-peptide conjugate (APBP) is devised to target the AD microenvironment and inhibit inflammatory responses at an early stage. With the modification of the targeting peptide, this nanoconjugate can efficiently deliver peptides to the infected regions and restore the antioxidant ability of neurons by activating the nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 signaling pathway. Moreover, this multi-target strategy exhibits a synergistic function of ROS scavenging, promoting Aβ phagocytosis, and normalizing the glial cell phenotype. As a result, the nanoconjugate can reduce ROS level, decrease Aβ burden, alleviate glial cell activation, and eventually enhance cognitive functions in APPswe/PSEN1dE9 model mice. These results indicate that APBP can be a promising candidate for the multi-target treatment of AD.

The design of therapeutic antibodies has attracted a large amount of attention over the years. Antibodies are widely used to treat many diseases due to their high efficiency and low risk of adverse events. However, the experimental methods of antibody design are time-consuming and expensive. Although computational antibody design techniques have had significant advances in the past years, there are still some challenges that need to be solved, such as the flexibility of antigen structure, the lack of antibody structural data and the absence of standard antibody design protocol. In the present work, we elaborated on an in silico antibody design protocol for users to easily perform computer-aided antibody design. First, the Rosetta web server will be applied to generate the 3D structure of query antibodies if there is no structural information available. Then, two-step docking will be used to identify the binding pose of an antibody–antigen complex when the binding information is unknown. ClusPro is the first method to be used to conduct the global docking, and SnugDock is applied for the local docking. Sequentially, based on the predicted binding poses, in silico alanine scanning will be used to predict the potential hotspots (or key residues). Finally, computational affinity maturation protocol will be used to modify the structure of antibodies to theoretically increase their affinity and stability, which will be further validated by the bioassays in the future. As a proof of concept, we redesigned antibody D44.1 and compared it with previously reported data in order to validate IsAb protocol. To further illustrate our proposed protocol, we used cemiplimab antibody, a PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor, as an example to showcase a step-by-step tutorial.

We prove that rationally connected Calabi--Yau 3-folds with kawamata log terminal (klt) singularities form a birationally bounded family, or more generally, rationally connected $3$-folds of $\epsilon$-CY type form a birationally bounded family for $\epsilon>0$. Moreover, we show that the set of $\epsilon$-lc log Calabi--Yau pairs $(X, B)$ with coefficients of $B$ bounded away from zero is log bounded modulo flops. Bronsted acid and base interactions are a cornerstone of chemistry describing a wide range of chemical phenomena. However, probing such interaction at the solid-liquid interface to extract the elementary and intrinsic information at a single-molecule level remains a big challenge. Herein, we employ an STM break junction (STM-BJ) technique to investigate the acid-base chemistry of carboxylic acid-based molecules at a Au (111) model surface and propose a prototype of a single-molecule pH sensor for the first time. The single-molecule measurements in different environmental conditions verify that the formation probability of molecular junctions is determined by the populations of deprotonated -COO- form in a self-assembled monolayer. Furthermore, the variation of the intensity of the conductance peaks (i.e., junction-forming probability) with the pH of the bulk solution fits well to the Henderson-Hasselbalch type equation. From the equation, a good linear relation is found between the degree of dissociation of the immobilized -COOH group and the environmental pH, providing a feasible way to design chemicals and biosensors and a detector at the single-molecule scale.

To realize the reasonable configuration of energy storage equipment in the multi-energy complementary system, the random characteristics of the renewable energy power generation system and the load during the actual operation are fully considered. A coupled Markov modeling method is proposed in this paper, the coupled Markov model can effectively characterize multiple random variables in the system. Different from the traditional optimization method of selecting specific data, this paper constructs a data sequence based on the coupled Markov mode, which can comprehensively and objectively reflect the uncertainty and randomness of all random variables. Based on this, an optimization model is constructed, and the power and capacity configuration scheme of the energy storage device is obtained through optimization. The simulation result and analysis comparison show the objectivity and rationality of the proposed optimization method.

Manipulation tasks in daily life, such as pouring water, unfold through human intentions. Being able to process contextual knowledge from these Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) over time can help us understand manipulation intentions, which are essential for an intelligent robot to transition smoothly between various manipulation actions. In this paper, to model the intended concepts of manipulation, we present a vision dataset under a strictly constrained knowledge domain for both robot and human manipulations, where manipulation concepts and relations are stored by an ontology system in a taxonomic manner. Furthermore, we propose a scheme to generate a combination of visual attentions and an evolving knowledge graph filled with commonsense knowledge. Our scheme works with real-world camera streams and fuses an attention-based Vision-Language model with the ontology system. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can successfully represent the evolution of an intended object manipulation procedure for both robots and humans. The proposed scheme allows the robot to mimic human-like intentional behaviors by watching real-time videos. We aim to develop this scheme further for real-world robot intelligence in Human-Robot Interaction.

This paper develops a simulation-based mission mobility reliability (MMR) analysis framework to account for uncertainty in mobility prediction of off-road ground vehicles in mission planning. A concept of MMR is first proposed to quantify reliability of a mission path which passes through different types of soils. A single-loop Kriging surrogate modeling method is then employed to overcome the computational challenge in MMR assessment caused by expensive mobility simulations. Built upon the surrogate model-based MMR analysis, a dynamic updating scheme is proposed to update the MMR estimation using online mobility data, during the course of a specific mission and for a particular vehicle. The online dynamic updating of MMR allows us for effective and dynamic decision-making during the mission phase, thus proactively avoid rare events of immobility during the mission. A case study demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed MMR analysis and updating framework.

It has long been proposed that doping a chiral spin liquid (CSL) or fractional quantum Hall state can give rise to topological superconductivity. Despite of intensive effort, definitive evidences still remain lacking. We address this problem by studying the $t$-$J$ model supplemented by time-reversal symmetry breaking chiral interaction $J_\chi$ on the triangular lattice using density-matrix renormalization group with a finite concentration $\delta$ of doped holes. It has been established that the undoped, i.e., $\delta$=0, system has a CSL ground state in the parameter region $0.32\le J_\chi/J \le 0.56$. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations but short-range spin-spin correlations. In particular, the superconducting correlations, whose pairing symmetry is consistent with $d\pm id$-wave, are dominant at all hole doping concentrations. The mechanism of superconductivity in a purely interacting electron system has been one of the most challenging issues in condensed matter physics. In the BCS theory, the Landau's Fermi liquid is the ground state of weakly interacting fermions dictated by the fermion sign structure, and the superconducting instability only occurs when an additional pairing force is added. By contrast, as shown by density matrix renormalization group calculation, a quasi-one-dimensional superconducting state (specifically a Luther-Emery state) is an intrinsic ground state of the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ two-leg ladder and four-leg cylinder at finite doping. Such a Luther-Emery state with pairing can be directly turned into a Fermi-gas-like normal state without pairing by merely switching off the phase-string signs hidden in the model via two schemes, which reduce the sign structure to the trivial fermion signs associated with doped holes. It thus demonstrates a new pairing paradigm in a model-doped Mott insulator as due to the generic phase-string sign structure. Finally, as an example, the latter is explicitly shown to lead to a ``stringlike'' pairing force after adiabatically connecting to a strong anisotropic limit of the model.

We fabricated a Yb-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Yb:YAG) crystal-derived silica fiber (YCDSF) using an assembly consisting of a YAG crystal rod and silica tube on a CO2 laser-heated drawing tower. The fiber has a Yb concentration of 5.66 wt%, and absorption coefficient of 32 dB/cm at 980 nm. The figure of merit of the unsaturated absorption and gain per unit length of the YCDSF are 93% and 4.4 dB/cm, respectively. Based on the results of the numerical simulation, an all-fiber distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser using only a 1.5-cm-long YCDSF is experimentally demonstrated to have a maximum output power of 360 mW with a pump threshold power of 21 mW. The fiber laser also achieved an optical signal-to-noise ratio of 80 dB, a beam quality factor of 1.022 in two orthogonal directions and a slope efficiency of up to 50.5%. These results indicate that the all-fiber DBR laser has potential applications in high-quality seed sources and coherent optical communications.

Printable organic thin-film transistors have enabled flexible low-cost electronics, which has the potential for a lot of emerging electronic applications. Despite the excellent dark performance of advanced all-inkjet printed organic thin-film transistors, their photoresponse is less explored and needs to be investigated, especially photoresponse to visible lights that human beings can see and are most familiar with. Importantly, for electronics integration, both devices with and without photo-sensitivity to visible light are important, for photo-detecting and signal processing, respectively. In this study, two organic semiconductor materials are used in all-inkjet printed organic thin-film transistors, namely 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT), 6,13-bis (triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pentacene). By characterizing devices under optical exposure with wavelengths from 400 to 800 nm, photocurrents and threshold voltage shifts of the devices are extracted. The fabricated C8-BTBT organic thin-film transistors do not exhibit noticeable photo-sensitivity to visible light, whereas the TIPS-pentacene devices demonstrate significant photoresponse to visible lights, with photocurrents in nano- to micro-ampere levels and threshold voltage shifts of hundreds of millivolts to several volts depending on the photon energy of lights under the same intensity. The TIPS-pentacene devices demonstrated reproducible characteristics before and after light exposure. In addition, the responsivity and sensitivity of the devices were characterized with a decent responsivity of 55.9 mA/W. The photoresponse mechanisms are explained with ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) adsorption spectroscopy measurements and extracted optical bandgaps of the two semiconductors. This study shows both printed organic transistors with and without photo-sensitivity can be fabricated with the same device structure and fabrication process at low cost, which opens the new possibility of using printed organic thin-film transistors for integrated optoelectronic applications.

Understanding manipulation scenarios allows intelligent robots to plan for appropriate actions to complete a manipulation task successfully. It is essential for intelligent robots to semantically interpret manipulation knowledge by describing entities, relations and attributes in a structural manner. In this paper, we propose an implementing framework to generate high-level conceptual dynamic knowledge graphs from video clips. A combination of a Vision-Language model and an ontology system, in correspondence with visual perception and contextual semantics, is used to represent robot manipulation knowledge with Entity-Relation-Entity (E-R-E) and Entity-Attribute-Value (E-A-V) tuples. The proposed method is flexible and well-versed. Using the framework, we present a case study where robot performs manipulation actions in a kitchen environment, bridging visual perception with contextual semantics using the generated dynamic knowledge graphs.
