Abstract: Pollen-based vegetation, biodiversity, and biome reconstructions over the last 15,500 years from sediment core data at Mbi Crater in the Cameroon highlands (6.089273° N, 10.348549° E; 2015 m above sea level) are used to discuss the behavior of the lower edge of the Afromontane forest facing climate change. The data reveal that the post-glacial forest change gradually happened at Mbi and that the forest-wooded grassland ecotone was highly influenced by the climate variability related to the North Atlantic. The forest disruption and diversity loss intermittently occurred over the whole period, and their vegetation changes temporally match dry-cold events at the northern latitudes during the Younger Dryas, at 9.5–9.1 ka, 8.6–8.0 ka, 6.7–6.0 ka, 3.2 ka, and during the Little Ice Age (LIA). During the LIA, the mountain forest was subject to unprecedented levels of disturbance at all altitudes, unlike the seasonal lowland forests, which appears to have been only marginally affected.

Abstract: International audience; While the emergence of the Acheulean is well documented in East Africa at ~1.7 Ma, subsequent developments are less well understood and to some extent controversial. Here, we provide robust evidence regarding the time period between 1.6 Ma and 1.2 Ma, based on an interdisciplinary approach to the stratigraphic sequences exposed in the Gombore gully of Melka Kunture, in the upper Awash Valley of Ethiopia. Throughout the Pleistocene, the environment differed significantly from elsewhere in Africa because of the elevation at 2000 m asl, the cooler and rainy climate, the Afromontane vegetation, the development of endemic animal species, and the recurrent impact of volcanic activity. At Gombore IB, dated ~1.6 Ma, remains of Homo erectus/ergaster have been discovered, associated with a rich early Acheulean assemblage. The techno-typological analysis of the lithic record from Gombore Iγ (~1.4 Ma) and Gombore Iδ (~1.3 Ma), where substantial areas have been excavated, and the contrasting evidence from Gombore OAM Test Pit C (~1.2 Ma), suggest that the scarcity or lack of large flakes and large cutting tools at the two earlier sites is possibly not just the outcome of sampling bias, but rather of the adaptation of H. erectus/ergaster to the local resources, in a relatively isolated environment. The sites of Gombore gully provide new evidence on the complex pattern of human evolution and adaptation in East Africa during the Lower Pleistocene.

Abstract: International audience; Using an approach that embodies an explicit tradeoff between need and governance considerations, we propose an optimal aid allocation formula. We first assume exogenous, then endogenous governance. In the former case, a central concept is need-adjusted aid effectiveness while in the second case the donor has policing instruments under the form of monitoring and sanctioning capacities. We show that external disciplining has two advantages when the donor is sensitive enough to poverty intensity: (1) to cater to poor countries to a greater extent than is possible when local governance cannot be influenced by external forces, and (2) to respond (non-perversely) to improvements in the local governance of a country by raising its aid share. In institutionally weak countries, populations should welcome wisely applied donor's discipline as a way not only to get access to financial support but also to constrain their elites to refrain from abusing their position excessively. Imposing discipline when the release of externally-provided development funds is at stake seems more acceptable than aid directed to the explicit purpose of combatting corruption.

Abstract: International audience; The Anthropocene was conceptualized in 2000 to reflect the extensive impact of human activities on our planet, and subsequent detailed analyses have revealed a substantial Earth System response to these impacts beginning in the mid-20 th century. Key to this understanding was the discovery of a sharp upturn in a multitude of global socioeconomic indicators and Earth System trends at that time; a phenomenon termed the 'Great Acceleration'. It coincides with massive increases in global human-consumed energy and shows the Earth System now on a trajectory far exceeding the earlier variability of the Holocene Epoch, and in some respects the entire Quaternary Period. The evaluation of geological signals similarly shows the mid-20 th century as representing the most appropriate inception for the Anthropocene. A recent mathematical analysis has nonetheless challenged the significance of the original Great Acceleration data. We examine this analytical approach and reiterate the robustness of the original data in supporting the Great Acceleration, while emphasizing that intervals of rapid growth are inevitably time-limited, as recognised at the outset. Moreover, the exceptional magnitude of this growth remains undeniable, reaffirming the centrality of the Great Acceleration in justifying a formal chronostratigraphic Anthropocene at the rank of series/epoch.

Abstract: Cyclone Pam swept through the archipelago of Vanuatu on 13-14 March 2015, with wind speeds exceeding those recorded anywhere in the South Pacific since the 1980s. Southern and central parts of the country were particularly affected. Material damage on Tongoa, one of the most afflicted islands, was extensive, but no deaths were reported. During the storm, villagers found shelter in their kitchen, in what is considered locally as a 'lifeboat'. The aftermath was managed and mitigated by international aid organisations. On Tongoa, this included a 'Shelter Cluster' programme, under which villagers were given house rebuilding kits. Elaborating upon extensive ethnographic investigations on site between 2011 and 2018, this paper explores and reveals the ways in which this aid generated confusion among the local population. Abstract: 1AbstractIndividuals differ in many ways. Most produce few offspring; a handful produce many. Some die early; others live to old age. It is tempting to attribute these differences in out-comes to differences in individual traits, and thus in the demographic rates experienced. However, there is more to individual variation than meets the eye of the biologist. Even among individuals sharing identical traits, life history outcomes will vary due to individual stochasticity, i.e., to chance. Quantifying the contributions of heterogeneity and chance is essential to understanding natural variability. Inter-individual differences vary across environmental conditions. Heterogeneity and stochasticity depend on environmental conditions. We show that favorable conditions increase the contributions of individual stochasticity, and reduce the contributions of heterogeneity, to variance in demographic outcomes in a seabird population. The opposite is true under poor conditions. This result has important consequence for understanding the ecology and evolution of life history strategies.

Abstract: We introduce and study a class of optimization problems we call replenishment problems with fixed turnover times: a very natural model that has received little attention in the literature. Clients with capacity for storing a certain commodity are located at various places; at each client the commodity depletes within a certain time, the turnover time, which is constant but can vary between locations. Clients should never run empty. The natural feature that makes this problem interesting is that we may schedule a replenishment (well) before a client becomes empty, but then the next replenishment will be due earlier also. This added workload needs to be balanced against the cost of routing vehicles to do the replenishments. In this paper, we focus on the aspect of minimizing routing costs. However, the framework of recurring tasks, in which the next job of a task must be done within a fixed amount of time after the previous one is much more general and gives an adequate model for many practical situations. Note that our problem has an infinite time horizon. However, it can be fully characterized by a compact input, containing only the location of each client and a turnover time. This makes determining its computational complexity highly challenging and indeed it remains essentially unresolved. We study the problem for two objectives: min–avg minimizes the average tour cost and min–max minimizes the maximum tour cost over all days. For min–max we derive a logarithmic factor approximation for the problem on general metrics and a 6-approximation for the problem on trees, for which we have a proof of NP-hardness. For min–avg we present a logarithmic factor approximation on general metrics, a 2-approximation for trees, and a pseudopolynomial time algorithm for the line. Many intriguing problems remain open.

Abstract: International audience; As nonclassical nucleic acid structures, G-quadruplexes (G4s) not only play important roles in gene regulation and stability maintenance, but are also widely used in nanotechnology. Structural diversity is one of the main factors explaining the popularity of G4s, but a comprehensive and integrated study of different factors determining G4 structural versatility is currently lacking. Herein, starting from a common G4 sequence, (G 3 T) 3 G 3 , as the parent chain, and then taking advantage of G4 versatility, we present a variety of strategies to control G4 structure, based on the regulation of loop length and flanking sequences, cation (type and concentration), and molecular crowding. These strategies allow us to convert the G4 topology from parallel to hybrid, to antiparallel, and then back to parallel. Such structural diversity reveals the coding regulation ability of G4 structures, with potential applications in nanotechnology.

Abstract: We review palaeoenvironmental proxies and combinations of these relevant for understanding hunter-gatherer niche construction activities in pre-agricultural Europe. Our approach consists of two steps: (1) identify the possible range of hunter-gatherer impacts on landscapes based on ethnographic studies; (2) evaluate proxies possibly reflecting these impacts for both the Eemian (Last Interglacial, Middle Palaeolithic) and the Early–Middle Holocene (Mesolithic). We found these paleoenvironmental proxies were not able to unequivocally establish clear-cut differences between specific anthropogenic, climatic and megafaunal impacts for either time period in this area. We discuss case studies for both periods and show that published evidence for Mesolithic manipulation of landscapes is based on the interpretation of comparable data as available for the Last Interglacial. If one applies the ‘Mesolithic’ interpretation schemes to the Neanderthal record, three common niche construction activities can be hypothesised: vegetation burning, plant manipulation and impact on animal species presence and abundance. Our review suggests that as strong a case can be made for a Neanderthal impact on landscapes as for anthropogenic landscape changes during the Mesolithic, even though the Neanderthal evidence comes from only one high-resolution site complex. Further research should include attempts (e.g. by means of modelling studies) to establish whether hunter-gatherer impact on landscapes played out at a local level only versus at a larger scale during both time periods, while we also need to obtain comparative data on the population sizes of Last Interglacial and Holocene hunter-gatherers, as these are usually inferred to have differed significantly.

Abstract: International audience; Ozone, PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations over Paris, France and Stockholm, Sweden were modeled at 4 and 1 \unit{km} horizontal resolutions respectively for the present and 2050 periods employing decade-long simulations. We account for large-scale global climate change (RCP-4.5) and fine resolution bottom-up emission projections developed by local experts and quantify their impact on future pollutant concentrations. Moreover, we identify biases related to the implementation of regional scale emission projections over the study areas by comparing modeled pollutant concentrations between the fine and coarse scale simulations. We show that over urban areas with major regional contribution (e.g., the city of Stockholm) the bias due to coarse emission inventory may be significant and lead to policy misclassification. Our results stress the need to better understand the mechanism of bias propagation across the modeling scales in order to design more successful local-scale strategies. We find that the impact of climate change is spatially homogeneous in both regions, implying strong regional influence. The climate benefit for ozone (daily average and maximum) is up to -5 % for Paris and -2 % for Stockholm city. The joined climate benefit on PM2.5 and PM10 in Paris is between -10 and -5 % while for Stockholm we observe mixed trends up to 3 % depending on season and size class. In Stockholm, emission mitigation leads to concentration reductions up to 15 % for daily average and maximum ozone and 20 % for PM and through a sensitivity analysis we show that this response is entirely due to changes in emissions at the regional scale. On the contrary, over the city of Paris (VOC-limited photochemical regime), local mitigation of NOx emissions increases future ozone concentrations due to ozone titration inhibition. This competing trend between the respective roles of emission and climate change, results in an increase in 2050 daily average ozone by 2.5 % in Paris. Climate and not emission change appears to be the most influential factor for maximum ozone concentration over the city of Paris, which may be particularly interesting in a health impact perspective.

Abstract: In this work different variables that can affect the catalytic behavior of CuO-CeO2 supported on mesoporous silica (SBA-15 and SBA-16) were studied. The influence on the COPrOx activity of the relative concentration of the CuO and CeO2 active phase and different impregnation methods in mesoporous support was analyzed. The physicochemical characterization was performed EDS-SEM and TEM-STEM, N2 isotherms, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The incipient wetness impregnation method (IWI) was the better alternative to introduce the active phases compared to solid state impregnation (SSI). In addition, the catalysts based on 2-D structure of SBA-15 were more active and selective than those based in 3-D SBA-16. In general, the high surface area of the supports benefited the dispersion of CuO and CeO2 oxides nanoparticles. All catalysts displayed the preservation of the mesostructure and the formation of nanoparticles of active phases (less than 10 nm) detected by TEM. The best COPrOx catalyst, obtained from the SBA-15 fibers by IWI method, with a relative CuO concentration of 0.2, exhibited XCO ≥ 99% at 175 °C and above 90% in a wide window of temperatures. This catalyst showed an adequate performance in presence of CO2 and H2O and good recovery of CO conversion and selectivity. The analysis by XPS revealed that the majority species were Ce4+, however in some catalysts Ce3+ species are also present, which are associated with vacancies oxygen and favor the redox process. In addition, Cu2+ and Cu+ species are present, the latter recognized as a key site of CO adsorption in the reaction mechanism.

Abstract: Boves Castle, located in northern France, was occupied between the 9th and 16th centuries AD. Under excavation since 1996, this high-status site has yielded more than six tons of faunal remains. Until now, archaeozoological studies have focused on the early occupation of the site (10th and 11th centuries AD), revealing specific supply and consumption strategies, widely based around birds. Aside from the very large amount of domestic fowl, Boves Castle is distinguished by the number and diversity of wild birds from various environments, including wetland, coastal, forested and anthropized areas. However, the special feature of this site is the importance of freshwater birds, especially large waders, which remained a status symbol until modern times in this region. On the basis of this outstanding example, and other high-status sites from the same region, we aim to discuss the importance and status of various domestic and game bird categories in northern France during the High Middle Ages. We will also address the subject of controlled hunting areas around castles and other high-status consumer sites, for a better understanding of the link between power and consumption during the medieval period.

Abstract: International audience; The cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis, spirulina, is a source of pigments such as phycobiliprotein, phycocyanin. Phycocyanin is used in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. The different steps involved in extraction and purification of this protein can alter the final properties. In this review, the stability of phycocyanin (pH, temperature, and light) is discussed, considering the physicochemical parameters of kinetic modeling. The optimal working pH range for phycocyanin is between 5.5 and 6.0 and it remains stable up to 45 °C; however, exposure to relatively high temperatures or acidic pH decreases its half-life and increases the degradation kinetic constant. Phycobiliproteins are sensitive to light and preservatives such as mono- and di-saccharides, citric acid, or sodium chloride appear to be effective stabilizing agents. Encapsulation within nano- or micro-structured materials such as nanofibers, microparticles, or nanoparticles, can also preserve or enhance its stability.

Abstract: Recent palaeomagnetic and seismological studies have strengthened the suggestion that the Moon once possessed a core dynamo. Despite its importance as a constraint on lunar evolution, there is currently no consensus on how such a dynamo was driven. Two groups working independently have arrived at the idea that the lunar dynamo was powered by mechanical stirring of the liquid core. Dwyer et al. investigate the mechanism of a dynamo driven by continuous mechanical stirring arising from the differential motion between the solid silicate mantle and the liquid core beneath. They show that the fluid motions and the power required to drive a dynamo operating continuously for more than 1 billion years are readily obtained by such mechanical stirring. Le Bars et al. propose a model whereby the dynamo action comes from impact-induced changes in the Moon's rotation rate. They show that basin-forming impact events are energetic enough to have unlocked the Moon from synchronous rotation, and that the subsequent large-scale fluid flows in the core, excited by the tidal distortion of the core–mantle boundary, could have powered a lunar dynamo. The origin of lunar magnetic anomalies1,2,3,4,5 remains unresolved after their discovery more than four decades ago. A commonly invoked hypothesis is that the Moon might once have possessed a thermally driven core dynamo3, but this theory is problematical given the small size of the core and the required surface magnetic field strengths6. An alternative hypothesis is that impact events might have amplified ambient fields near the antipodes of the largest basins7, but many magnetic anomalies exist that are not associated with basin antipodes. Here we propose a new model for magnetic field generation, in which dynamo action comes from impact-induced changes in the Moon’s rotation rate. Basin-forming impact events are energetic enough to have unlocked the Moon from synchronous rotation8, and we demonstrate that the subsequent large-scale fluid flows in the core, excited by the tidal distortion of the core–mantle boundary9, could have powered a lunar dynamo. Predicted surface magnetic field strengths are on the order of several microteslas, consistent with palaeomagnetic measurements5, and the duration of these fields is sufficient to explain the central magnetic anomalies associated with several large impact basins.

Abstract: A graph database is a digraph whose arcs are labeled with symbols from a fixed alphabet. A regular graph pattern (RGP) is a digraph whose edges are labeled with regular expressions over the alphabet. RGPs model navigational queries for graph databases called conjunctive regular path queries (CRPQs). A match of a CRPQ in the database is witnessed by a special navigational homomorphism of the corresponding RGP to the database. We study the complexity of deciding the existence of a homomorphism between two RGPs. Such homomorphisms model a strong type of containment between the two corresponding CRPQs. We show that this problem can be solved by an EXPTIME algorithm (while general query containmement in this context is EXPSPACE-complete). We also study the problem for restricted RGPs over a unary alphabet, that arise from some applications like XPath or SPARQL. For this case, homomorphism-based CRPQ containment is in NP. Abstract: Sparse direct solvers using Block Low-Rank compression have been proven efficient to solve problems arising in many real-life applications. Improving those solvers is crucial for being able to 1) solve larger problems and 2) speed up computations. A main characteristic of a sparse direct solver using low-rank compression is when compression is performed. There are two distinct approaches: (1) all blocks are compressed before starting the factorization, which reduces the memory as much as possible, or (2) each block is compressed as late as possible, which usually leads to better speedup. The objective of this paper is to design a composite approach, to speedup computations while staying under a given memory limit. This should allow to solve large problems that cannot be solved with Approach 2 while reducing the execution time compared to Approach 1.We propose a memory-aware strategy where each block can be compressed either at the beginning or as late as possible. We first consider the problem of choosing when to compress each block, under the assumption that all information on blocks is perfectly known, i.e., memory requirement and execution time of a block when compressed or not. We show that this problem is a variant of the NP-complete Knapsack problem, and adapt an existing 2-approximation algorithm for our problem. Unfortunately, the required information on blocks depends on numerical properties and in practice cannot be known in advance. We thus introduce models to estimate those values. Experiments on the PaStiX solver demonstrate that our new approach can achieve an excellent trade-off between memory consumption and computational cost. For instance on matrix Geo1438, Approach 2 uses three times as much memory as Approach 1 while being three times faster. Our new approach leads to an execution time only 30% larger than Approach 2 when given a memory 30% larger than the one needed by Approach 1., Les solveurs directs creux utilisant de la compression low-rank ont montré leur efficacité pour résoudre de grands systèmes. Nous proposonsune stratégie memory-aware où chaque bloc peut ˆêtre compressé au début ou au plus tard. Nous commençons par considérer le problème où toutes les informations (consommation mémoire et temps d’exécution en version compressée ou non) sont parfaitement connues. Nous montrons que ce problème est une variante du problème NP-complet Knapsack et adaptons une 2-approximation pour notre problème. Malheureusement, toutes ces informations dépendent de propriétés numériques et ne sont pas connues `a l’avance. Des modèles sont donc introduits afin d’estimer ces valeurs. Des expérimentations avec le solveur PaStiX montrent que notre approche permet d’avoir un excellent compromis entre consommation mémoire et temps d’exécution. Par exemple, pour la matrice Geo1438, l’approche 2 utilise trois fois plus de mémoire que l’approche 1, qui est trois fois plus lente. Notre nouvelle méthode permet d’obtenir à la fois un temps d’exécution seulement 30% supérieur à celui de l’approche 2 tout en ayant une consommation mémoire seulement supérieure de 30% à celle de l’approche 1.

Abstract: International audience; Botryosphaeria dieback is a grapevine trunk disease that affects all viticulture regions of the world. Species of the genus Lasiodiplodia have been reported as pathogenic towards grapevine in several growing regions and have also been previously reported from Portuguese vineyards. Species in this genus, particularly Lasiodiplodia theobromae, have been reported on previous studies to be more aggressive than other Botryosphaeriaceae species most commonly associated with Botryosphaeria dieback. The aim of this study was to assess the response of some of the more representative cultivars planted throughout Portuguese vineyards, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Alvarinho, Aragonez (=Tempranillo) and Cabernet Sauvignon, by performing artificial inoculations with Lasiodiplodia spp. collected in different geographic locations worldwide. Two experiments, one by inoculating two-year-old grapevines kept on a greenhouse-controlled conditions with six isolates of L. theobromae and one isolate of L. mediterranea and other by inoculating seven-year-old field grown grapevines with two isolates of L. theobromae, were conducted twice. Response of the cultivars was assessed by evaluating the lesion length caused by the isolates under study, five months after inoculation. The results showed that all isolates studied were able to infect the annual shoots since they were always re-isolated and produced internal wood discoloration. Significant differences were found for all isolate/cultivar combinations. For both experiments, Touriga Nacional showed the largest lesions while Aragonez recorded the smallest lesions amongst the whole lot of cultivars inoculated with Lasiodiplodia spp.. In general, Portuguese isolates were more aggressive than those from Peru, which demonstrated to be mildly aggressive. These results give a first insight on the response of selected Portuguese cultivars to Lasiodiplodia species, which are present in Portugal, but not commonly associated with Botryosphaeria dieback. This contributes to improve knowledge of the impact that Botryosphaeria dieback causal agents have on crucial national cultivars, which may help winegrowers not only to manage current cultural practices, but also to optimize decision making when planning the establishment of new vineyards.

Abstract: International audience; In-flight ice accretion under parametric uncertainty is investigated. Three test cases are presented which reproduce experiments carried out at the NASA's Glenn Icing Research Tunnel (IRT) facility. A preliminary accuracy assessment, achieved comparing numerical predictions against experimental observations, confirm the robustness and the predictiveness of the computerized icing model. Besides, sensitivity analyses highlight the variance of the targeted outputs with respect to the different uncertain inputs. In rime icing conditions, a predominant role is played by the uncertainty affecting the airfoil angle of attack, the cloud liquid water content and the droplets’ mean volume diameter. In glaze icing condition, the sensitivity analysis shows instead that the output variability is due mainly to the ambient temperature uncertainty. Results expose a major criticality of standard uncertainty quantification techniques. The issue is inherent the approximation of the full icing model behavior in domain regions scarcely affected by ice build up. To mitigate the issue, a non-linear regression method is proposed and applied.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we study a single machine scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing the sum of completion times. Each of the given jobs is either short or long. However the processing times are initially hidden to the algorithm, but can be tested. This is done by executing a processing time oracle, which reveals the processing time of a given job. Each test occupies a time unit in the schedule, therefore the algorithm must decide for which jobs it will call the processing time oracle. The objective value of the resulting schedule is compared with the objective value of an optimal schedule, which is computed using full information. The resulting competitive ratio measures the price of hidden processing times, and the goal is to design an algorithm with minimal competitive ratio. Two models are studied in this paper. In the non-adaptive model, the algorithm needs to decide beforehand which jobs to test, and which jobs to execute untested. However in the adaptive model, the algorithm can make these decisions adaptively depending on the outcomes of the job tests. In both models we provide optimal polynomial time algorithms following a two-phase strategy, which consist of a first phase where jobs are tested, and a second phase where jobs are executed obliviously. Experiments give strong evidence that optimal algorithms have this structure. Proving this property is left as an open problem

Abstract: International audience; We present a new numerical modelling study of subduction initiation at (hyper-extended) magma-poor and magma-rich continental passive margins. In particular, we test how the structure and rheological stratification of these two end-member types control the formation and thermo-mechanical evolution of subduction zones. The serpentinization of mantle lithosphere in a magma-poor continental rifted margin leads to rheological decoupling at the base of the continental crust, which induces shear localization during subsequent shortening. Under these conditions, a shear zone propagates into the mantle lithosphere and leads to subduction initiation at the transition between ocean and passive margin. In contrast, a magma-rich rifted continental margin is rheologically coupled, which creates a buttressing effect and transfer of deformation into the oceanic domain during shortening, where the subduction zone initiates. These results are quantitatively compared and in agreement with the geological record of subduction initiation in the Alps and Dinarides – Hellenides, where the relics of end-member types of continental rifted margins of the same Adriatic micro-continent bordering the Alpine Tethys and Neotethys oceans, respectively, are observed.

Abstract: International audience; Yttrium mono- and di-silicates are excellent candidate materials for Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBC), to protect Ceramic-Matrix Composites (CMC). A large distribution of microstructures can be generated by varying the duration of sintering, the particle size distribution of the precursor and/or the deposition method. In the present work, investigations of the corrosion resistance of yttrium silicate coatings with various microstructures in the high temperature range, under different oxidizing environments are reported. An original experimental methodology has allowed quantifying the influence of the microstructure (especially grain size and grain boundary surface area) on properties such as ionic conductivity, resistance to oxygen diffusion, volatilization rate and surface recession, and showing that they directly affect their protection efficiency against oxidation. Based on these results, guidelines for the design of an optimized yttrium silicate EBC featuring microstructural and compositional variations are proposed.

Abstract: Most species are extinct, those that are not are often unknown. Sequenced and sampled species are often a minority of known ones. Past evolutionary events involving horizontal gene flow, such as horizontal gene transfer, hybridization, introgression, and admixture, are therefore likely to involve “ghosts,” that is extinct, unknown, or unsampled lineages. The existence of these ghost lineages is widely acknowledged, but their possible impact on the detection of gene flow and on the identification of the species involved is largely overlooked. It is generally considered as a possible source of error that, with reasonable approximation, can be ignored. We explore the possible influence of absent species on an evolutionary study by quantifying the effect of ghost lineages on introgression as detected by the popular D-statistic method. We show from simulated data that under certain frequently encountered conditions, the donors and recipients of horizontal gene flow can be wrongly identified if ghost lineages are not taken into account. In particular, having a distant outgroup, which is usually recommended, leads to an increase in the error probability and to false interpretations in most cases. We conclude that introgression from ghost lineages should be systematically considered as an alternative possible, even probable, scenario. Abstract: Genetic diversity varies among species due to a range of eco-evolutionary processes that are not fully understood. The neutral theory predicts that the amount of variation in the genome sequence between different individuals of the same species should increase with its effective population size (Ne). In real populations, multiple factors that modulate the variance in reproductive success among individuals cause Ne to differ from the total number of individuals (N). Among these, age-specific mortality and fecundity rates are known to have a direct impact on the ratio. However, the extent to which vital rates account for differences in genetic diversity among species remains unknown. Here, we addressed this question by comparing genome-wide genetic diversity across 16 marine fish species with similar geographic distributions but contrasted lifespan and age-specific survivorship and fecundity curves. We sequenced the whole genome of 300 individuals to high coverage and assessed their genome-wide heterozygosity with a reference-free approach. Genetic diversity varied from 0.2 to 1.4% among species, and showed a negative correlation with adult lifespan, with a large negative effect (slope = − 0.089 per additional year of lifespan) that was further increased when brooding species providing intense parental care were removed from the dataset (slope = −0.129 per additional year of lifespan). Using published vital rates for each species, we showed that the ratio resulting simply from life tables parameters can predict the observed differences in genetic diversity among species. Using simulations, we further found that the extent of reduction in with increasing adult lifespan is particularly strong under Type III survivorship curves (high juvenile and low adult mortality) and increasing fecundity with age, a typical characteristic of marine fishes. Our study highlights the importance of vital rates as key determinants of species genetic diversity levels in nature.Author SummaryUnderstanding how and why genetic diversity varies across species has important implications for evolutionary and conservation biology. Although genomics has vastly improved our ability to document intraspecific DNA sequence variation at the genome level, the range and determinants of genetic diversity remain partially understood. At a broad taxonomic scale in eukaryotes, the main determinants of diversity are reproductive strategies distributed along a trade-off between the quantity and the size of offspring, which likely affect the long-term effective population size. Long-lived species also tend to show lower genetic diversity, a result which has however not been reported by comparative studies of genetic diversity at lower taxonomic scales. Here, we compared genetic diversity across 16 European marine fish species showing marked differences in longevity. Adult lifespan was the best predictor of genetic diversity, with genome-wide average heterozygosity ranging from 0.2% in the black anglerfish (L. budegassa) to 1.4% in the European pilchard (S. pilchardus). Using life tables summarizing age-specific mortality and fecundity rates for each species, we showed that the variance in lifetime reproductive success resulting from age structure, iteroparity and overlapping generations can predict the range of observed differences in genetic diversity among marine fish species. We then used computer simulations to explore how combinations of vital rates characterizing different life histories affect the relationship between adult lifespan and genetic diversity. We found that marine fishes that display high juvenile but low adult mortality, and increasing fecundity with age, are typically expected to show reduced genetic diversity with increased adult lifespan. However, the impact of adult lifespan vanished using bird and mammal-like vital rates. Our study shows that variance in lifetime reproductive success can have a major impact on species genetic diversity and explains why this effect varies widely across taxonomic groups.

Abstract: A large number of intense cyclones occur every year in the Mediterranean basin, one of the climate change hotspots. Producing a broad range of severe socio-economic and environmental impacts in such a densely populated region, Mediterranean cyclones call for coordinated and interdisciplinary research efforts. This article aims at supporting these efforts by reviewing the status of knowledge in the broad field of Mediterranean cyclones. First, we focus on the climatology of Mediterranean cyclone tracks, their relationship to large-scale atmospheric circulation and their future trends. Second, we discuss the dynamics and atmospheric processes that govern the genesis and development of Mediterranean cyclones. Then, we present the different subtypes of Mediterranean cyclones, devoting special attention to medicanes, i.e. cyclones with tropical characteristics and subjects of numerous recent studies. In a subsequent section, we review the state of the art in forecasting cyclones and relevant high-impact weather, and we discuss in detail the challenges and recent efforts to increase their forecast skill. Finally, we discuss the main impacts produced by cyclones, namely heavy precipitation, windstorms, dust transport, storm surges and sea wave extremes. In the last section of this review article, we thoroughly outline the future directions of research that would advance the broader field of Mediterranean cyclones.

Abstract: Hypothesis Some of the most promising fields of application of ionic liquid-based colloids imply elevated temperatures. Their careful design and analysis is therefore essential. We assume that tuning the structure of the nanoparticle-ionic liquid interface through its composition can ensure colloidal stability for a wide temperature range, from room temperature up to 200 °C. Experiments The system under study consists of iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed in ethylmethylimidazolium bistriflimide (EMIM TFSI). The key parameters of the solid-liquid interface, tuned at room temperature, are the surface charge density and the nature of the counterions. The thermal stability of these nanoparticle dispersions is then analysed on the short and long term up to 200 °C. A multiscale analysis is performed combining dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle X-ray/neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Findings Following the proposed approach with a careful choice of the species at the solid-liquid interface, ionic liquid-based colloidal dispersions of iron oxide NPs in EMIM TFSI stable over years at room temperature can be obtained, also stable at least over days up to 200 °C and NPs concentrations up to 12 vol% ( ≈ 30 wt%) thanks to few near-surface ionic layers.

Abstract: International audience; Aquatic plants are crucial for the proper functioning of aquatic environments. So far, mixotrophy, widespread in aquatic microbial communities and in certain terrestrial plants, has been studied rarely in aquatic plants other than carnivorous ones. New evidence, particularly in Lemna and other close genera, suggests that mixotrophy is much more widespread than previously thought. Three processes could be involved, namely biotrophic associations, capture of prey (e.g., in carnivorous plants), and absorbotrophy (uptake of dissolved organic carbon). The latter process seems to be the most probable hypothesis in regard to the physiology of aquatic plants, but further research at both organism and cellular levels is needed to understand and clarify the processes involved and their importance. This opinion opens a new window of opportunity in aquatic ecology, with possible unsuspected applications in water management.

Abstract: International audience; A wave equation whose main coefficient is discontinuous models the evolution of waves amplitude in a media composed of at least two different materials, in which the propagation speed is different. In our mathematical setting, the spatial domain where the partial differential equation evolves is an open bounded subset of R^2 and the wave speed is assumed to be constant in each one of two sub-domains, separated by a smooth and possibly non-convex interface. This article is concerned with the construction of Carleman weights for this wave operator, allowing generalizations of previous results to the case of an interface that is not necessarily the boundary of a convex set. Indeed, using the orthogonal projection onto this interface, we define convex functions satisfying the transmission conditions imposed by the equation, such that, under usual hypothesis on the sign of the jump of the wave speed, can be used as Carleman weights.

Abstract: International audience; In order to understand the nature of the dust that accreted onto chondrules in the nebula and to unravel the conditions of formation of fine grained rims (FGRs), we studied three of the least altered chondrites from different chondrite groups (LL3.00 Semarkona, CO3.0 DOM 08006, CR2.8 QUE 99177) and compared the results with our previous work on the Paris CM chondrite (Zanetta et al., 2021). For each sample, we selected representative rimmed chondrules showing minimal traces of aqueous alteration. We performed high-resolution SEM X-ray chemical mapping to obtain relevant phase abundances and grain size distributions. Four FIB sections were then extracted from each meteorite, two in the rims and two in their adjacent matrix for quantitative TEM analysis. At the microscale, texture, modal abundances and grain size differ depending on the chondrite but also between FGRs and their adjacent matrix. At the nanoscale (i.e. TEM observations), matrices of the four chondrites consist mostly of domains of amorphous silicate associated with Fe-sulfides, Fe-Ni metal, Mg-rich anhydrous silicates and an abundant porosity. The related FGRs in Semarkona (LL) and DOM 08006 (CO) exhibit more compact textures with a lower porosity while FGRs in QUE99177 (CR) are similar to the matrix in terms of porosity. In the three chondrites, FGRs are made of smooth and chemically homogeneous amorphous (or nanocrystalline) silicate with no porosity that encloses domains of porous amorphous silicate bearing Mg-rich anhydrous silicates, Fe-sulfides, Fe-oxides and sometimes metal and Fe-rich olivines. The average compositions in major elements of the amorphous regions are similar for the FGRs and the matrix within a given chondrite (but differ between chondrites). The texture and the chemical homogeneity of the smooth silicate and the fact that it encloses domains of porous amorphous silicate bearing other mineral phases similar to matrix-like material suggests a formation by condensation. Areas that are enclosed in this smooth silicate exhibit Fe-rich olivine formed through Fe interdiffusion that also suggest a thermal modification of the dust accreted to form FGRs. These characteristics indicate a transformation process for the modification of the FGR material similar to the one proposed in our previous work on Paris. We conclude that matrix and FGRs accreted a similar type of dust but FGR material was affected by thermal modification and compaction contemporary with their accretion. For each chondrite, dust accreted onto chondrules under different conditions (dust density, temperature) which led to diverse degrees of compaction/thermal modification of the sub-domains and explain the textural differences observed in FGRs. They accreted on chondrules in a warm environment related to the chondrule formation episode, whereas matrix accreted later in a cooler environment.

Abstract: International audience; Serpentinization and carbonation of ultramafic formations is a ubiquitous phenomenon, which deeply influences the biogeochemical cycles of water, hydrogen, carbon…while supporting the particular biosphere around the oceanic hydrothermal vents. Carbonation of peridotites and other mafic and ultramafic rocks is also a hot topic in the current energy landscape as the engineered sequestration of mineral CO2 in these formations could help reduce the atmospheric emissions and cope with climate change. In this study, we present two reactive percolation experiments performed on a natural serpentinite dredged from the ultraslow South-West Indian Oceanic Ridge. The serpentinite cores (length 3-4 cm and dia. 5.6 mm) were subjected for about 10 days to the continuous injection of a NaHCO3-saturated brine at respectively 160°C and 280°C. Petrographic and petrophysical results as well as outlet fluid compositions were compared to numerical batch simulations performed with the PHREEQC open software allowing to reconstruct the mineralogical evolution of both cores. The most striking observation is the fast and dramatic decrease of the permeability for both experiments principally due to the precipitation of carbonates. On the contrary, serpentine was found to be less impacting as it precipitates in low-flow zones, out of the main percolation paths. In total, about 5.6% of the total injected CO2 was retained in the core, at 280°C. In the same time, hydrogen was consistently produced with a total recovered H2 corresponding to 0.8% of the maximum H2 possible. The global behavior of the cores is interpreted as the result from an interplay between interacting spatio-temporal lengthscales controlled by the Damköhler number.

Abstract: Biopolymers and their derivatives are materials with increasing interest for industry and especially for sustainable engineering development. Among such kind of materials, carbohydrate polymer like highly deacetylated chitin (chitosan) is widely used for a wide range of applications, including material and biomedical developments. The majority of industrially produced chitosan is based on chitin extracted from crustacean exoskeleton. However, with increase of interest on this material, chitosan's production will rapidly become insufficient and other species should be investigated as new sources of chitosan. In the present work, we focus on the preparation of chitosan from giant dung beetles (Genus Heliocopris, Hope, 1838). This genus was chosen to show the possibility to take animals that develop and leave near dejection and valuate them for material applications. This work includes all the chitosan extraction procedures, chitosan characterisation IR, SEM, NMR, ash content, and deacetylation degree. Finally, the prepared carbohydrate polymer is used to form hydrogel. The prepared gel has been characterised and used for 3D printing, to show the compatibility of extracted chitosan with biomaterial application.

Abstract: KAI2 are plant α/β hydrolase receptors, which perceive smoke-derived butenolide signals (karrikins) and putative endogenous, yet unidentified phytohormones (KAI2-ligands, KLs). The number of functional KAI2 receptors varies among plant species. It has been suggested that KAI2 gene duplication and sub-functionalization plays an adaptative role for diverse environments or ligand diversification by altering the receptor responsiveness to specific KLs. Legumes represent one of the largest families of flowering plants and contain many essential agronomic crops. Prior to legume diversification, KAI2 underwent duplication, resulting in KAI2A and KAI2B. Integrating plant genetics, ligand perception and enzymatic assays, and protein crystallography, we demonstrate that Pisum sativum KAI2A and KAI2B act as receptors and enzymes with divergent ligand stereoselectivity. KAI2B has a stronger affinity than KAI2A towards the KAI2-ligand (-)-GR24 and remarkably hydrolyses a broader range of substrates including the strigolactone-like isomer (+)-GR24. We determine the crystal structures of PsKAI2B in apo and butenolide-bound states. The biochemical and structural analyses as well as recorded mass spectra of KAI2s reveal a transient intermediate on the catalytic serine and a stable adduct on the catalytic histidine, further illuminating the role of KAI2 not only as receptors but also as bona fide enzymes. Our work uncovers the stereoselectivity of ligand perception and catalysis by evolutionarily diverged KAI2 receptors in KAR/KL signaling pathways and proposes adaptive sensitivity to KAR/KL and strigolactone phytohormones by KAI2B.

Abstract: International audience; Solubility experiments were performed on a trachyte and a pantellerite from Pantelleria. The trachyte has SiO 2 = 65.2 wt%, Al 2 O 3 = 15.2 wt% and a peralkaline index (P.I. = molar[(Na 2 O + K 2 O)/Al 2 O 3 ]) ∼ 1 while the pantellerite has SiO 2 = 72.2 wt%, Al 2 O 3 = 11 wt% and a P.I. = 1.3. Solubility experiments were performed in the pressure range of 50-300 MPa at T = 950°C for the trachyte and 50-200 MPa at T = 850°C for the pantellerite. The water content of experimental glasses was determined by Karl Fischer titration, elemental analyser and FT-IR spectroscopy. Water content appears similar in both compositions for analogous pressure conditions, varying from ∼2.5 wt% at 50 MPa to ∼5.8 at 200 MPa. Comparison of the experimental data with the thermodynamic models shows that the empirical model of Moore et al. [1998] better matches the experimental data for both compositions, while the thermodynamic models of Papale et al. [2006] and Ghiorso and Gualda [2015] tend to overestimate melt water content, probably due to the paucity of peralkaline melt compositions used for calibration. One inference of these new solubility data is on MI-derived depth of felsic reservoirs at Pantelleria which deepens from 2.4 to 3.5 km.

Abstract: International audience; The French Central Seismological Bureau (BCSF) is celebrating its centenary this year. However, from the macroseismic studies point of view, which is the main activity of BCSF, it would be more accurate to celebrate its 92nd anniversary of activity. This is because between 1978 and 1986, macroseismic studies were assigned to the Geological and Mining Research Bureau (BRGM) owing to an obvious failure of BCSF to fulfill its mission. In this article, I aim to bring a new insight on this unfortunate, tragic episode by following two main actors of BCSF history: Edmond and Jean-Pierre Rothé, father and son. Through them I will relate the story of French macroseismic studies and, more broadly, French seismicity. In order to do so, I will focus on how they built themselves a full system of monitoring and processing earthquake data, and also on how together they owned all the macroseismic data in France for almost 60 years. I will explore how their dominance brought about the failure of BCSF after the collapse of the legitimacy of Rothé’s expertise at a time when earthquake issues were intertwined in nuclear industry stakes. This brings to light not only the history of French seismicity but also the vulnerability of seismic hazard assessment practices.

GREENHOME enables a multi-perspective analysis of household energy consumption and CO 2 footprint using and combining several variables through various statistics and data mining algorithms. To test GREENHOME, the article reports on experiments conducted for modelling and forecasting energy consumption and CO 2 footprint in the context of the Triple-A European project.

Abstract: We study the connection of matter density and its tracers from the PDF perspective. One aspect of this connection is the conditional expectation value $\langle \delta_{\mathrm{tracer}}|\delta_m\rangle$ when averaging both tracer and matter density over some scale. We present a new way to incorporate a Lagrangian bias expansion of this expectation value into standard frameworks for modelling the PDF of density fluctuations and counts-in-cells statistics. Using N-body simulations and mock galaxy catalogs we confirm the accuracy of this expansion and compare it to the more commonly used Eulerian parametrization. For halos hosting typical luminous red galaxies, the Lagrangian model provides a significantly better description of $\langle \delta_{\mathrm{tracer}}|\delta_m\rangle$ at second order in perturbations. A second aspect of the matter-tracer connection is shot-noise, \ie the scatter of tracer density around $\langle \delta_{\mathrm{tracer}}|\delta_m\rangle$. It is well known that this noise can be significantly non-Poissonian and we validate the performance of a more general, two-parameter shot-noise model for different tracers and simulations. Abstract: Large-scale software verification relies critically on the use of compositional languages, semantic models, specifications, and verification techniques. Recent work on certified abstraction layers synthesizes game semantics, the refinement calculus, and algebraic effects to enable the composition of heterogeneous components into larger certified systems. However, in existing models of certified abstraction layers, compositionality is restricted by the lack of encapsulation of state. In this paper, we present a novel game model for certified abstraction layers where the semantics of layer interfaces and implementations are defined solely based on their observable behaviors. Our key idea is to leverage Reddy's pioneer work on modeling the semantics of imperative languages not as functions on global states but as objects with their observable behaviors. We show that a layer interface can be modeled as an object type (i.e., a layer signature) plus an object strategy. A layer implementation is then essentially a regular map, in the sense of Reddy, from an object with the underlay signature to that with the overlay signature. A layer implementation is certified when its composition with the underlay object strategy implements the overlay object strategy. We also describe an extension that allows for non-determinism in layer interfaces. After formulating layer implementations as regular maps between object spaces, we move to concurrency and design a notion of concurrent object space, where sequential traces may be identified modulo permutation of independent operations. We show how to express protected shared object concurrency, and a ticket lock implementation, in a simple model based on regular maps between concurrent object spaces.

Abstract: We perform simulations of the Kelvin–Helmholtz cooling phase of proto-neutron stars with a new numerical code in spherical symmetry and using the quasi-static approximation. We use for the first time the full set of charged-current neutrino–nucleon reactions, including neutron decay and modified Urca processes, together with the energy-dependent numerical representation for the inclusion of nuclear correlations with random phase approximation. Moreover, convective motions are taken into account within the mixing length theory. As we vary the assumptions for computing neutrino–nucleon reaction rates, we show that the dominant effect on the cooling time-scale, neutrino signal, and composition of the neutrino-driven wind comes from the inclusion of convective motion. Computation of nuclear correlations within the random phase approximation, as compared to mean field approach, has a relatively small impact.

Abstract: We present our determination of the baryon budget for an X-ray-selected XXL sample of 136 galaxy groups and clusters spanning nearly two orders of magnitude in mass ($M_{500}\sim 10^{13}-10^{15}M_\odot$) and the redshift range $0< z < 1$. Our joint analysis is based on the combination of HSC-SSP weak-lensing mass measurements, XXL X-ray gas mass measurements, and HSC and SDSS multiband photometry. We carry out a Bayesian analysis of multivariate mass-scaling relations of gas mass, galaxy stellar mass, stellar mass of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), and soft-band X-ray luminosity, by taking into account the intrinsic covariance between cluster properties, selection effect, weak-lensing mass calibration, and observational error covariance matrix. The mass-dependent slope of the gas mass--total mass ($M_{500}$) relation is found to be $1.29_{-0.10}^{+0.16}$, which is steeper than the self-similar prediction of unity, whereas the slope of the stellar mass--total mass relation is shallower than unity, $0.85_{-0.09}^{+0.12}$. The BCG stellar mass weakly depends on cluster mass with a slope of $0.49_{-0.10}^{+0.11}$. The baryon, gas mass, and stellar mass fractions as a function of $M_{500}$ agree with the results from numerical simulations and previous observations. We successfully constrain the full intrinsic covariance of the baryonic contents. The BCG stellar mass shows the larger intrinsic scatter at a given halo total mass, followed in order by stellar mass and gas mass. We find a significant positive intrinsic correlation coefficient between total (and satellite) stellar mass and BCG stellar mass and no evidence for intrinsic correlation between gas mass and stellar mass. Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses a large class of vector optimization problems in infinite-dimensional spaces with respect to two important binary relations derived from domination structures. Motivated by theoretical challenges as well as by applications to some models in behavioral sciences, we establish new variational principles that can be viewed as far-going extensions of the Ekeland variational principle to cover domination vector settings. Our approach combines advantages of both primal and dual techniques in variational analysis with providing useful sufficient conditions for the existence of variational traps in behavioral science models with variable domination structures.

Abstract: The last decade has seen a significant increase in the number of studies devoted to wave turbulence. Many deal with water waves, as modeling of ocean waves has historically motivated the development of weak turbulence theory, which adresses the dynamics of a random ensemble of weakly nonlinear waves in interaction. Recent advances in experiments have shown that this theoretical picture is too idealized to capture experimental observations. While gravity dominates much of the oceanic spectrum, waves observed in the laboratory are in fact gravity-capillary waves, due to the restricted size of wave basins. This richer physics induces many interleaved physical effects far beyond the theoretical framework, notably in the vicinity of the gravity-capillary crossover. These include dissipation, finite-system size effects, and finite nonlinearity effects. Abstract: International audience; Scanning transmission electron microscopy is a crucial tool for nanoscience, achieving sub-nanometric spatial resolution in both image and spectroscopic studies. This generates large datasets that cannot be analyzed without computational assistance. The so-called machine learning procedures can exploit redundancies and find hidden correlations. Principal component analysis (PCA) is the most popular approach to denoise data by reducing data dimensionality and extracting meaningful information; however, there are many open questions on the accuracy of reconstructions. We have used experiments and simulations to analyze the effect of PCA on quantitative chemical analysis of binary alloy (AuAg) nanoparticles using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to obtain very good fidelity of chemical composition distribution when the signal-to-noise ratio exceeds a certain minimal level. Accurate denoising derives from a complex interplay between redundancy (data matrix size), counting noise, and noiseless data intensity variance (associated with sample chemical composition dispersion). We have suggested several quantitative bias estimators and noise evaluation procedures to help in the analysis and design of experiments. This work demonstrates the high potential of PCA denoising, but it also highlights the limitations and pitfalls that need to be avoided to minimize artifacts and perform reliable quantification.

Abstract: In this article, we investigate some of the fine properties of the value function associated to an optimal control problem in the Wasserstein space of probability measures. Building on new interpolation and linearisation formulas for non-local flows, we prove semiconcavity estimates for the value function, and establish several variants of the so-called sensitivity relations which provide connections between its superdifferential and the adjoint curves stemming from the maximum principle. Abstract: International audience; Serendipitous self-assembly is a potential approach for achieving structurally versatile and unexpected solids with chosen metal–ligand combinations. Cyclen (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane) is an interesting flexible molecule, well explored for biological and material applications of its metal complexes. The dihedral angle (θ) between four nitrogen atoms of free cyclen is close to 0°. Still, it may vary upon complexation, allowing flexibility to adopt any two conformers, viz., (i) planar and (ii) twisted. The present work establishes the crucial role of metal ions in controlling the conformation adopted by cyclen through metal complexation. SCXRD studies of the complexes of cyclen with CuII and NiII with halides and pseudohalides as counterions reveal the existence of a planar conformation (θ = ∼0–3°) for cyclen in CuII systems and a highly twisted conformation (hitherto unreported) in NiII systems (θ = ∼52–55°). Further, SQUID magnetic studies for the dimeric [Ni1] complex reveal antiferromagnetic interactions between the two Ni centres.

Abstract: A new vobasine–tryptamine-based monoterpene indole alkaloid pseudodimer was isolated from the stem bark of Voacanga africana. As a minor constituent occurring in a thoroughly investigated plant, this molecule was targeted based on a molecular networking strategy and a rational MS2-guided phytochemical investigation led to its isolation. Its structure was formally established based on HRMS, 1D/2D NMR data, and the application of the tool Small Molecule Accurate Recognition Technology (SMART 2.0). Its absolute configuration was assigned by the exciton chirality method and TD-DFT ECD calculations. Besides featuring an unprecedented intermonomeric linkage in the small group of vobasine/tryptamine hybrids, pyrrovobasine also represents the first pyrraline-containing representative in the whole monoterpene indole alkaloids group. Biosynthetic hypotheses possibly underpinning these structural oddities are proposed here.

Abstract: We consider the long-time behavior of an explicit tamed exponential Euler scheme applied to a class of parabolic semilinear stochastic partial differential equations driven by additive noise, under a one-sided Lipschitz continuity condition. The setting encompasses nonlinearities with polynomial growth. First, we prove that moment bounds for the numerical scheme hold, with at most polynomial dependence with respect to the time horizon. Second, we apply this result to obtain error estimates, in the weak sense, in terms of the time-step size and of the time horizon, to quantify the error to approximate averages with respect to the invariant distribution of the continuous-time process. We justify the efficiency of using the explicit tamed exponential Euler scheme to approximate the invariant distribution, since the computational cost does not suffer from the at most polynomial growth of the moment bounds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first result in the literature concerning the approximation of the invariant distribution for SPDEs with non-globally Lipschitz coefficients using an explicit tamed scheme.

Abstract: International audience; In this study coatings of kaolin and talc particles were successfully applied on the surface of polyamide 12 powder intended for laser sintering (LS). Microscopic observations revealed that using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as surface modifier for fillers led to a better coverage of polymer grains with a surface coverage between 6 and 16% as a function of filler type and content. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that the addition of talc and kaolin led to an increase in the crystallization temperature of PA12, but at the expense of processability. Process parameters were optimized in order to manufacture LS samples with the different coated powders. Fire behavior assessed by cone calorimetry showed that the use of CMC resulted in a significant decrease in the peak of heat release rate depending on the filler type and content. This behavior can be partially explained by an interaction between CMC, fillers and polymer, with the formation of amide linkage between carboxyl part of CMC and amine end groups of polyamide, resulting in an increase in the complex viscosity of materials.

Abstract: International audience; We report the reentrant phase transition of the organic-inorganic hybrid metal cluster (MC) compound (TBA)(2)[(Mo6Br8Br6a)-Br-i] (TBA = ((n-C4H9)(4)N)). Structural studies revealed that (TBA)(2)[(Mo6Br8Br6a)-Br-i] was crystallized in the conventional monoclinic phase with space group P2(1)/n. When the crystal was cooled down to 143 K, we observed a structural phase transition from the conventional phase to an unknown phase with packing structure similar to the conventional one; however, the unit cell was extended to a double size. A reentrant transition to the conventional structure was induced when the crystal was further cooled to 113 K. These reentrant phase transitions occurred without any symmetry changes caused by slight motions of the MCs and TBA(+) ions. Luminescence studies revealed that the phase transition poorly affected the emission spectra; however, the newly found phase exhibited 1.7 times longer emission lifetime than the conventional phase. These results indicate that MC-based compounds are promising and exhibit phase transitions and crystallographic polymorphisms.
