The use of plant resources for human basic need dates back to ancient times. Plants have been man’s recourse for natural healing, food, and for cultural practices. This study aimed to document the rich flora of Kibungan, Benguet that the Kankanaey tribe utilizes. Interviews and focused group discussions were used to gather data and it was supplemented with ocular inspection of the locality. Results revealed that there were various uses of plants that could be categorized into medicinal, food, house construction, and others. The leaves of medicinal plants are more frequently used to treat wounds, diarrhea, cough, and skin inflammation. Decoctions for natural remedies include gipas (Sarcandra glabra), gawed (Piper betle), and kutsay (Allium odorum). Plant foods such as fruits, root crops, and vegetables are either cultivated or gathered from the forest. Specifically, plants collected from the wild included pinit (Rubus fraxinifolius), amti (Solanum nigrum), bayabas (Psidium guajava), gatgattang (Sonchus arvensis), galyang (Alocasia macrorrhizos), and pako (Diplazium esculentum), while kamote (Ipomea batatas) and corn (Zea mays) are cultivated. The pine tree (Pinus kesiya) is the main raw material for house construction. Interestingly, dengaw (Acorus calamus) is regarded as an amulet, which is believed to ward off evil spirits.

Introduction Hong Kong has a great diversity of plants, many of which are toxic to humans. The aim of this study was to identify the plant species most commonly involved in cases of plant poisoning in Hong Kong and to provide clinicians with a reference tool for the diagnosis and management of plant poisoning. Methods We retrospectively reviewed all plant poisoning cases referred to the Hospital Authority Toxicology Reference Laboratory from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2017. Demographics, clinical presentation, laboratory findings, treatment and outcomes of patients, as well as morphological identification and analytical testing of the plant specimens, were investigated. Results A total of 62 cases involving 26 poisonous plant species were identified, among which Alocasia macrorrhizos (Giant Alocasia), Gelsemium elegans (Graceful Jessamine), and Rhododendron (Azalea) species were the three most commonly encountered. Gastrointestinal toxicity (n=30, 48%), neurological toxicity (n=22, 35%), and hepatotoxicity (n=6, 10%) were the three most common clinical problems. Forty-nine (79%) and eight (13%) patients had mild and moderate toxicity, respectively; they all recovered shortly with supportive treatment. The remaining five (8%) patients experienced severe toxicity requiring intensive care support. Most patients (n=61, 98%) used the plants intentionally: as a medicinal herb (n=31), as food (n=29), and for attempting suicide (n=1). Reasons for using the poisonous plants included misidentification (n=34, 55%), unawareness of the toxicity (n=20, 32%), and contamination (n=6, 10%). Conclusions Although most plant exposure resulted in a self-limiting disease, severe poisonings were encountered. Epidemiology of plant poisonings is geographically specific. Clinicians should be aware of local poisonous plants and their toxicities.

Alocasia macrorrhizos (L.) G.Don grows and proliferates in shaded areas in several forest fragments in urban zones. The adult plant has axils that accumulate rain water (phytotelmata) and serve as breeding sites for several families of aquatic insects. The objective of this study was to determine the composition of the entomofauna associated with water accumulations in axils of A. macrorrhizos in urban areas of Manaus, Brazil. Individuals of A. macrorrhizos were sampled in five forest fragments, between April/2005 and March/2007 in urban areas of Manaus, totaling 184 sampling units. A manual suction hose was used for the removal of entomofauna. A total of 1,941 immatures of Diptera were collected representing the following families: Culicidae (96.5%), Chironomidae (2%), Psychodidae (0.7%), Ephydridae (0.7%) and Corethrellidae (0.1%). Five Culicidae species were identified: Wyeomyia melanocephala Dyar & Knab, 1906 (91.7%), Wy. ypsipola Dyar, 1922 (4.3%), Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894) (2.3%), Ae. aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) (1.5%) and Johnbelkinia longipes (Fabricius, 1805) (0.1%). The members of Culicidae were the most abundant, confirming the importance of this group in communities associated with phytotelmata, with a positive relation to the volume of water (p < 0.05). The occurrence of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus in axils of A. macrorrhizos demonstrates the potential of this Araceae as a breeding site of these medically important species. However, the real contribution of this Araceae in the maintenance and dispersion of populations of these two species of mosquitoes throughout the year should be further studied. Resumo A. macrorrhizos (Araceae) é cultivada e se prolifera naturalmente em locais sombreados em diversos fragmentos de mata na zona urbana de Manaus. A planta adulta apresenta axilas que acumulam água da chuva (phytotelmata) e servem de criadouro para diversas famílias de insetos aquáticos. O objetivo do trabalho foi conhecer a composição da entomofauna associada às axilas de A. macrorrhizos, na área urbana de Manaus, Amazonas, Brasil. Entre 2005 e 2007, indivíduos de A. macrorrhizos foram amostrados em cinco fragmentos urbanos de mata, totalizando 184 unidades amostrais. Uma mangueira de sucção manual foi utilizada para coletar a fauna associada. Um total de 1.941 imaturos de Diptera foram coletadas, representadas pelas seguintes famílias: Culicidae (96,5%), Chironomidae (2%), Psychodidae (0,7%), Ephydridae (0,7%) e Corethrellidae (0,1%). Foram identificadas cinco espécies de Culicidae: Wyeomyia melanocephala Dyar & Knab, 1906 (91,7%), Wy. ypsipola Dyar, 1922 (4,3%), Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894) (2,3%), Ae. aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) (1,5%) e Johnbelkinia longipes (Fabricius, 1805) (0,1%). Os representantes de Culicidae foram os mais abundantes confirmando a importância desse grupo nas comunidades associadas a fitotelmatas, com relação positiva com o volume de água por planta (p < 0.05). A ocorrência de Ae. aegypti e Ae. albopictus nas axilas de A. macrorrhizos demonstra o potencial dessa Araceae como criadouro para estas espécies de importância médica. Contudo, a real contribuição dessa Araceae na manutenção e dispersão populacional dessas duas espécies de mosquitos ao longo do ano precisa ser melhor estudada.

International audience; Thermogenesis and heat generating tissues in inflorescences of the giant taro (Alocasia macrorrhizos (L.) G. Don) were studied from December 2005 to February 2006, on the Island of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. Temperatures were recorded in the ambient air, in the peduncle tissue, and on 12 positions within spadices during periods of maximum thermogenic activity, in the early morning hours of the female and male phases. The study showed that there were three thermogenic tissues: the sterile appendix, the fertile male part, and the differentiated sterile area below the fertile male part. During the female phase, heat was generated by the sterile appendix and the differentiated sterile area below the fertile male part, the smallest region of the spadix (mean ± SD = 0.86 ± 0.24 cm, 3.17% of the spadix length), and most probably by the fertile male part. Within the spadix, average temperatures gradually increased from the base of the female part and reached the first peak at the midpoint of the differentiated sterile area below the fertile male part (36.11 ± 1.54 °C). After that, they gradually decreased towards the midpoint of the fertile male part and increased again, reaching a second (main) peak at 1/4 of the sterile appendix height (44.83 ± 1.87 °C). From 1/4 to 1/2 of the appendix height they remained at more or less the same level, and then they decreased towards the tip of the spadix. During the male phase, heat was generated only within the fertile male part.; La thermogenèse et les tissus thermogénétiques du taro géant (Alocasia macrorrhizos (L.) G. Don) ont été étudiés de Décembre 2005 à Février 2006 sur l’île d’Espiritu Santo au Vanuatu. Les températures ont été mesurées dans l’air ambiant, dans le pédoncule ainsi que dans 12 emplacements à l’intérieur des spadices pendant les périodes d’activité thermogénétique maximale, au petit matin et pendant les phases femelles et mâles. L’étude a montré l’existence de trois tissus thermogénétiques : l’appendice stérile, la partie mâle fertile et la zone stérile différenciée située sous la partie mâle fertile. Durant la phase femelle, la chaleur était générée par l’appendice stérile et par la zone stérile différenciée sous la zone mâle fertile, soit la plus courte zone (0,86 ± 0,24 cm de long, soit 3,17 % du spadice), enfin très probablement par la zone mâle fertile elle-même. Á l’intérieur du spadice, les températures augmentaient progressivement à partir de la base de la partie femelle et atteignaient leur premier pic à la moitié de la zone stérile différenciée sous la zone mâle fertile (36,11 ± 1,54 °C). Ensuite, elles diminuaient graduellement vers le milieu de la zone mâle fertile, augmentaient à nouveau avant d’atteindre le second pic (le principal) au quart de la hauteur de l’appendice stérile (44,83 ± 1,87 °C). Entre le quart et la moitié de la hauteur de l’appendice, elles conservaient plus ou moins le même degré de température, puis décroissaient vers l’apex du spadice. Durant la phase mâle, la chaleur n’était générée que par la partie mâle fertile.

International audience; This investigation was aimed at understanding the morphological variation and reproductive biology of wild populations of giant tar (Alocasia macrorrhizos) in Vanuatu. It is an aroid species, which grows in vigorous, relatively small and dense populations, consisting of phenotypically uniform or very similar individuals. The most variable traits observed in wild populations are number of inflorescences, number of infructescences per plant, and corm length. These traits are highly variable even within genetically uniform populations and are highly influenced by age differences between plants. Flowering is frequent and most of the plants are highly fertile. However, sexual reproduction is rare due to self-incompatibility (between plants genetically homogeneous within the same population) and the absence of efficient pollinators. Self-incompatibility can be partly overcome by repeated self-pollination. Thermogenesis was studied on a large sample of inflorescences and little variation concerning the thermogenic potential was observed. Our results showed that, despite optimal flowering conditions (concerning pollen fertility, stigma receptivity, and thermogenic potential), propagation of wild Alocasia macrorrhizos populations in Vanuatu was mainly vegetative. Giant taro plants might have been carried beyond the range of their most effective pollinators. Other factors were considered: the presence of numerous earwigs (Labidura truncata) insects within inflorescences, which could have a competing effect with the usual pollinators of giant taro, and the long distances between genetically homogeneous populations.

Biodiversitas 17: 422-429. The objective of this study was to evaluate morphological, anatomical and isozyme variation among giant taro (Alocasia macrorrhizos (L.) G.Don) accessions from Central Java. Identification of morphological characters was done by direct observation of roots, leaves, stems, and corms. Anatomical characters were observed from both paradermal and transverse sections of leaf. Identification of biochemical markers was done by using peroxidase and esterase isozyme system. The genetic similarity among giant taro accessions was measured by using Group Average Clustering. The results of the analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences for majority of the tested morphological and anatomical characters suggesting that there was a high degree of diversity among the giant taro accessions. Isozyme polymorphism was observed in giant taro accessions using peroxidase (two banding patterns) and esterase (four banding patterns). Based on the dendogram, giant taro accessions were segregated into two major clusters. In Cluster I, the closest relationship were showed in KTN 2 and WNG 1 accessions from Klaten and Wonogiri that had 80.95% of similarity coefficient. The five accessions (SKA, SKH, WNG 4, KRA 3, KRA 4) from Surakarta, Sukoharjo, Wonogiri and some parts of Karanganyar were clustered separately as Cluster II with similarity coefficient of 50%.
