The aim of this paper is to discuss the main result in the paper by D.Y. Gao and X. Lu [On the extrema of a nonconvex functional with double-well potential in 1D, Z. Angew. Math. Phys. (2016) 67:62]. More precisely we provide a detailed study of the problem considered in that paper, pointing out the importance of the norm on the space $C^{1}[a,b]$; because no norm (topology) is mentioned on $C^{1}[a,b]$ we look at it as being a subspace of $W^{1,p}(a,b)$ for $p\in [1,\infty]$ endowed with its usual norm. We show that the objective function has not local extrema with the mentioned constraints for $p\in [1,4)$, and has (up to an additive constant) only a local maximizer for $p=\infty$, unlike the conclusion of the main result of the discussed paper where it is mentioned that there are (up to additive constants) two local minimizers and a local maximizer. We also show that the same conclusions are valid for the similar problem treated in the preprint by X. Lu and D.Y. We show that a relative entropy condition recently shown by Leger and Vasseur to imply uniqueness and stable $L^2$ dependence on initial data of Lax 1- or $n$-shock solutions of an $n\times n$ system of hyperbolic conservation laws with convex entropy implies Lopatinski stability in the sense of Majda. This means in particular that Leger and Vasseur's relative entropy condition represents a considerable improvement over the standard entropy condition of decreasing shock strength and increasing entropy along forward Hugoniot curves, which, in a recent example exhibited by Barker, Freist\"uhler and Zumbrun, was shown to fail to imply Lopatinski stability, even for systems with convex entropy. In this work we introduce the r-Hunter-Saxton equation, a generalisation of the Hunter-Saxton equation arising as extremals of an action principle posed in L_r. We characterise solutions to the Cauchy problem, quantifying the blow-up time and studying various symmetry reductions. Diagonal groups are one of the classes of finite primitive permutation groups occurring in the conclusion of the O'Nan-Scott theorem. Several of the other classes have been described as the automorphism groups of geometric or combinatorial structures such as affine spaces or Cartesian decompositions, but such structures for diagonal groups have not been studied in general. The main purpose of this paper is to describe and characterise such structures, which we call diagonal semilattices. Unlike the diagonal groups in the O'Nan-Scott theorem, which are defined over finite characteristically simple groups, our construction works over arbitrary groups, finite or infinite. A diagonal semilattice depends on a dimension m and a group T. For m=2, it is a Latin square, the Cayley table of T, though in fact any Latin square satisfies our combinatorial axioms. However, for m≥3, the group T emerges naturally and uniquely from the axioms. (The situation somewhat resembles projective geometry, where projective planes exist in great profusion but higher-dimensional structures are coordinatised by an algebraic object, a division ring.) A diagonal semilattice is contained in the partition lattice on a set Ω, and we provide an introduction to the calculus of partitions. In this paper, we study a system of three evolutionary operator equations involving fractional powers of selfadjoint, monotone, unbounded, linear operators having compact resolvents. This system constitutes a generalized and relaxed version of a phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type modelling tumor growth that has originally been proposed in Hawkins-Daarud et al. (Int. J. Numer. Math. Biomed. Eng. 28 (2012), 3-24). The original phase field system and certain relaxed versions thereof have been studied in recent papers co-authored by the present authors and E. Rocca. The model consists of a Cahn-Hilliard equation for the tumor cell fraction, coupled to a reaction-diffusion equation for a function S representing the nutrient-rich extracellular water volume fraction. Effects due to fluid motion are neglected. Motivated by the possibility that the diffusional regimes governing the evolution of the different constituents of the model may be of different (e.g., fractional) type, the present authors studied in a recent note a generalization of the systems investigated in the abovementioned works. Under rather general assumptions, well-posedness and regularity results have been shown. In particular, by writing the equation governing the evolution of the chemical potential in the form of a general variational inequality, also singular or nonsmooth contributions of logarithmic or of double obstacle type to the energy density could be admitted. In this note, we perform an asymptotic analysis of the governing system as two (small) relaxation parameters approach zero separately and simultaneously. We present a new method of proving the Diophantine extremality of various dynamically defined measures, vastly expanding the class of measures known to be extremal. This generalizes and improves the celebrated theorem of Kleinbock and Margulis [{\it Invent. Math.} {\bf 138}(3) (1999), 451--494] resolving Sprind\v zuk's conjecture, as well as its extension by Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss, and Weiss [On fractal measures and Diophantine approximation. {\it Selecta Math.} {\bf 10} (2004), 479--523], hereafter abbreviated KLW. As applications we prove the extremality of all hyperbolic measures of smooth dynamical systems with sufficiently large Hausdorff dimension, and of the Patterson--Sullivan measures of all nonplanar geometrically finite groups. The key technical idea, which has led to a plethora of new applications, is a significant weakening of KLW's sufficient conditions for extremality. In the first of this series of papers [{\it Selecta Math.} {\bf 24}(3) (2018), 2165--2206], we introduce and develop a systematic account of two classes of measures, which we call {\it quasi-decaying} and {\it weakly quasi-decaying}. We prove that weak quasi-decay implies strong extremality in the matrix approximation framework, as well as proving the ``inherited exponent of irrationality'' version of this theorem. In this paper, the second of the series, we establish sufficient conditions on various classes of conformal dynamical systems for their measures to be quasi-decaying. In particular, we prove the above-mentioned result about Patterson--Sullivan measures, and we show that equilibrium states (including conformal measures) of nonplanar infinite iterated function systems (including those which do not satisfy the open set condition) and rational functions are quasi-decaying., Comment: Link to Part I: arXiv:1504.04778

In this paper we analyze a class of trace finite element methods for the discretization of vector-Laplace equations. A key issue in the finite element discretization of such problems is the treatment of the constraint that the unknown vector field must be tangential to the surface (‘tangent condition’). We study three different natural techniques for treating the tangent condition, namely a consistent penalty method, a simpler inconsistent penalty method and a Lagrange multiplier method. The main goal of the paper is to present an analysis that reveals important properties of these three different techniques for treating the tangent constraint. A detailed error analysis is presented that takes the approximation of both the geometry of the surface and the solution of the partial differential equation into account. Error bounds in the energy norm are derived that show how the discretization error depends on relevant parameters such as the degree of the polynomials used for the approximation of the solution, the degree of the polynomials used for the approximation of the level set function that characterizes the surface, the penalty parameter and the degree of the polynomials used for the approximation of the Lagrange multiplier.

This is a follow-up of the paper J. Fernandez-Bonder, A. Ritorto and A. Salort, H-convergence result for nonlocal elliptic-type problems via Tartar’s method, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 49 (2017), pp. 2387–2408, where the classical concept of H-convergence was extended to fractional $$p$$ -Laplace type operators. In this short paper we provide an explicit characterization of this notion by demonstrating that the weak- $$*$$ convergence of the coefficients is an equivalent condition for H-convergence of the sequence of nonlocal operators. This result takes advantage of nonlocality and is in stark contrast to the local $$p$$ -Laplacian case.

From spline theory it is well-known that univariate cubic spline interpolation, if carried out in its natural Hilbert space W 2 2 [ a , b ] and on point sets with fill distance h , converges only like O ( h 2 ) in L 2 [ a , b ] if no additional assumptions are made. But superconvergence up to order h 4 occurs if more smoothness is assumed and if certain additional boundary conditions are satisfied. This phenomenon was generalized in 1999 to multivariate interpolation in Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces on domains Ω ⊂ R d for continuous positive definite Fourier-transformable shift-invariant kernels on R d . But the sufficient condition for superconvergence given in 1999 still needs further analysis, because the interplay between smoothness and boundary conditions is not clear at all. Furthermore, if only additional smoothness is assumed, superconvergence is numerically observed in the interior of the domain, but a theoretical foundation still is a challenging open problem. This paper first generalizes the “improved error bounds” of 1999 by an abstract theory that includes the Aubin–Nitsche trick and the known superconvergence results for univariate polynomial splines. Then the paper analyzes what is behind the sufficient conditions for superconvergence. They split into conditions on smoothness and localization, and these are investigated independently. If sufficient smoothness is present, but no additional localization conditions are assumed, it is numerically observed that superconvergence always occurs in the interior of the domain, and some supporting arguments are provided. If smoothness and localization interact in the kernel-based case on R d , weak and strong boundary conditions in terms of pseudodifferential operators occur. A special section on Mercer expansions is added, because Mercer eigenfunctions always satisfy the sufficient conditions for superconvergence. Numerical examples illustrate the theoretical findings.

Complex linear differential equations with entire coefficients are studied in the situation where one of the coefficients is an exponential polynomial and dominates the growth of all the other coefficients. If such an equation has an exponential polynomial solution $f$, then the order of $f$ and of the dominant coefficient are equal, and the two functions possess a certain duality property. The results presented in this paper improve earlier results by some of the present authors, and the paper adjoins with two open problems., 17 pages

In this paper we investigate the property (HLUR), a generalisation of (LUR) property of a Banach space. A Banach space having the property (HLUR) is called an HLUR space. We characterise (HLUR) property with the help of known geometric properties and study various properties of HLUR spaces. We show that for any finite dimensional Banach space, the property (HLUR) coincides with anti-Daugavet property of the space. International audience; We present a new notion of solution for mean field games master equations. This notion allows us to work with solutions which are merely continuous. We prove first results of uniqueness and stability for such solutions. It turns out that this notion is helpful to characterize the value function of mean field games of optimal stopping or impulse control and this is the topic of the second half of this paper. The notion of solution we introduce is only useful in the monotone case. We focus in this paper in the finite state space case.

The classical Stefan problem is one of the most studied free boundary problems of evolution type. Recently, there has been interest in treating the corresponding free boundary problem with nonlocal diffusion. We start the paper by reviewing the main properties of the classical problem that are of interest for us. Then we introduce the fractional Stefan problem and develop the basic theory. After that we center our attention on selfsimilar solutions, their properties and consequences. We first discuss the results of the one-phase fractional Stefan problem which have recently been studied by the authors. Finally, we address the theory of the two-phase fractional Stefan problem which contains the main original contributions of this paper. In this paper we suggest a method for transforming a vector subdivision scheme generating $C^{\ell}$ limits to another such scheme of the same dimension, generating $C^{\ell+1}$ limits. In scalar subdivision, it is well known that a scheme generating $C^{\ell}$ limit curves can be transformed to a new scheme producing $C^{\ell+1}$ limit curves by multiplying the scheme's symbol with the smoothing factor $\tfrac{z+1}{2}$. We extend this approach to vector and Hermite subdivision schemes, by manipulating symbols. The algorithms presented in this paper allow to construct vector (Hermite) subdivision schemes of arbitrarily high regularity from a convergent vector scheme (from a Hermite scheme whose Taylor scheme is convergent with limit functions of vanishing first component)., 28 pages, 4 figures. In this paper we prove the existence of an optimal set for the minimization of the $k$-th variational eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian among $p$-quasi open sets of fixed measure included in a box of finite measure. An analogous existence result is obtained for eigenvalues of the $p$-Laplacian associated with Schr\"odinger potentials. In order to deal with these nonlinear shape optimization problems, we develop a general approach which allows to treat the continuous dependence of the eigenvalues of the $p$-Laplacian associated with sign-changing capacitary measures under $\gamma$-convergence., Comment: This is an extended version of the published paper (on J. Diffusion approximation provides weak approximation for stochastic gradient descent algorithms in a finite time horizon. In this paper, we introduce new tools motivated by the backward error analysis of numerical stochastic differential equations into the theoretical framework of diffusion approximation, extending the validity of the weak approximation from finite to infinite time horizon. The new techniques developed in this paper enable us to characterize the asymptotic behavior of constant-step-size SGD algorithms for strongly convex objective functions, a goal previously unreachable within the diffusion approximation framework. Our analysis builds upon a truncated formal power expansion of the solution of a stochastic modified equation arising from diffusion approximation, where the main technical ingredient is a uniform-in-time weak error bound controlling the long-term behavior of the expansion coefficient functions near the global minimum. We expect these new techniques to greatly expand the range of applicability of diffusion approximation to cover wider and deeper aspects of stochastic optimization algorithms in data science., 22 pages, 3 figures. This paper is concerned with well-posedness of the Cahn-Hilliard equation subject to a class of new dynamic boundary conditions. The system was recently derived in Liu-Wu (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 233 (2019), 167-247) via an energetic variational approach and it naturally fulfills three physical constraints such as mass conservation, energy dissipation and force balance. The target problem examined in this paper can be viewed as a transmission problem that consists of Cahn-Hilliard type equations both in the bulk and on the boundary. In our approach, we are able to deal with a general class of potentials with double-well structure, including the physically relevant logarithmic potential and the non-smooth double-obstacle potential. Existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of global weak solutions are established. The proof is based on a novel time-discretization scheme for the approximation of the continuous problem. Besides, a regularity result is shown with the aim of obtaining a strong solution to the system.

This paper deals with dynamical optimal transport metrics defined by spatial discretisation of the Benamou--Benamou formula for the Kantorovich metric $W_2$. Such metrics appear naturally in discretisations of $W_2$-gradient flow formulations for dissipative PDE. However, it has recently been shown that these metrics do not in general converge to $W_2$, unless strong geometric constraints are imposed on the discrete mesh. In this paper we prove that, in a $1$-dimensional periodic setting, discrete transport metrics converge to a limiting transport metric with a non-trivial effective mobility. This mobility depends sensitively on the geometry of the mesh and on the non-local mobility at the discrete level. In his recent Proceedings of the AMS paper, “Gossez’s skew linear map and its pathological maximally monotone multifunctions”, Stephen Simons proved that the closure of the range of the sum of the Gossez operator and a multiple of the duality map is not convex whenever the scalar is between 0 0 and 4 4 . The problem of the convexity of that range when the scalar is equal to 4 4 was explicitly stated. In this paper, we answer this question in the negative for any scalar greater than or equal to 4 4 . We derive this result from an abstract framework that allows us to also obtain a corresponding result for the Fitzpatrick-Phelps integral operator.

Fourier series approximations of continuous but nonperiodic functions on an interval suffer the Gibbs phenomenon, which means there is a permanent oscillatory overshoot in the neighborhoods of the endpoints. Fourier extensions circumvent this issue by approximating the function using a Fourier series that is periodic on a larger interval. Previous results on the convergence of Fourier extensions have focused on the error in the $$L^2$$ L 2 norm, but in this paper we analyze pointwise and uniform convergence of Fourier extensions (formulated as the best approximation in the $$L^2$$ L 2 norm). We show that the pointwise convergence of Fourier extensions is more similar to Legendre series than classical Fourier series. In particular, unlike classical Fourier series, Fourier extensions yield pointwise convergence at the endpoints of the interval. Similar to Legendre series, pointwise convergence at the endpoints is slower by an algebraic order of a half compared to that in the interior. The proof is conducted by an analysis of the associated Lebesgue function, and Jackson- and Bernstein-type theorems for Fourier extensions. Numerical experiments are provided. We conclude the paper with open questions regarding the regularized and oversampled least squares interpolation versions of Fourier extensions.

In this paper we introduce and analyze an algorithm for continuous data assimilation for a three-dimensional Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy (3D BFeD) model of porous media. This model is believed to be accurate when the flow velocity is too large for Darcy's law to be valid, and additionally the porosity is not too small. The algorithm is inspired by ideas developed for designing finite-parameters feedback control for dissipative systems. It aims to obtaining improved estimates of the state of the physical system by incorporating deterministic or noisy measurements and observations. Specifically, the algorithm involves a feedback control that nudges the large scales of the approximate solution toward those of the reference solution associated with the spatial measurements. In the first part of the paper, we present few results of existence and uniqueness of weak and strong solutions of the 3D BFeD system. The second part is devoted to the setting and convergence analysis of the data assimilation algorithm.

This paper is devoted to a new family of reverse Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities which involve a power law kernel with positive exponent. We investigate the range of the admissible parameters and the properties of the optimal functions. This paper investigates the existence of weak solutions of biquasilinear boundary value problem for a coupled elliptic-parabolic system of divergence form with discontinuous leading coefficients. The mathematical framework addressed in the article considers the presence of an additional nonlinearity in the model which reflects the radiative thermal boundary effects in some applications of interest. The results are obtained via the Rothe-Galerkin method. Only weak assumptions are made on the data and the boundary conditions are allowed to be on a general form. The major contribution of the current paper is the explicit expressions for the constants appeared in the quantitative estimates that are derived. These detailed and explicit estimates may be useful for the study on nonlinear problems that appear in the real world applications. In particular, they clarify the smallness conditions. In conclusion, we illustrate how the above results may be applied to the thermoelectrochemical phenomena in an electrolysis cell. In this Paper we study a Bloch-Torrey regularization of the Rosensweig system for ferrofluids. The scope of this paper is twofold. First of all, we investigate the existence and uniqueness of solutions \`a la Leray of this model in the whole bidimensional space. Interesting enough, the well-posedness relies on a variation of the Aubin-Lions lemma for fractional time derivatives. We study the multiplicity of positive solutions of a Brezis–Nirenberg-type problem on a region of the three-dimensional sphere, which is invariant by the natural torus action. In the paper by Brezis and Peletier, the case in which the region is invariant by the (Formula presented.)-action is considered, namely, when the region is a spherical cap. We prove that the number of positive solutions increases as the parameter of the equation tends to (Formula presented.), giving an answer to a particular case of an open problem proposed in the above referred paper. In this paper, we discuss the existence and uniqueness of solutions of a boundary value problem for a fractional differential equation of order $\alpha\in(2,3)$, involving a general form of fractional derivative. First, we prove an equivalence between the Cauchy problem and the Volterra equation. The Truncated Nonsmooth Newton Multigrid (TNNMG) method is a robust and efficient solution method for a wide range of block-separable convex minimization problems, typically stemming from discretizations of nonlinear and nonsmooth partial differential equations. This paper proves global convergence of the method under weak conditions both on the objective functional, and on the local inexact subproblem solvers that are part of the method. It also discusses a range of algorithmic choices that allows to customize the algorithm for many specific problems. In this paper, we continue our study of the quasihyperbolic metric over Banach spaces. The main results of the paper present a criterion for smoothness of geodesics of quasihyperbolic type metrics in Banach spaces, under a Dini type condition on the weight function, which improves an earlier result of the first two authors. We also answer a question posed by the first two authors in an earlier paper with R. Klén and present results related to the question of smoothness of quasihyperbolic balls.

This paper is concerned with spherical harmonics, and two refinements thereof: complex harmonics and symplectic harmonics. The reproducing kernels of the spherical and complex harmonics are explicitly given in terms of Gegenbauer or Jacobi polynomials. In the first part of the paper we determine the reproducing kernel for the space of symplectic harmonics, which is again expressible as a Jacobi polynomial of a suitable argument. In the second part we find plane wave formulas for the reproducing kernels of the three types of harmonics, expressing them as suitable integrals over Stiefel manifolds. This is achieved using Pizzetti formulas that express the integrals in terms of differential operators.

The goal of this paper is to investigate the stability of the Helmholtz equation in the high- frequency regime with non-smooth and rapidly oscillating coefficients on bounded domains. Existence and uniqueness of the problem can be proved using the unique continuation principle in Fredholm's alternative. However, this approach does not give directly a coefficient-explicit energy estimate. We present a new theoretical approach for the one-dimensional problem and find that for a new class of coefficients, including coefficients with an arbitrary number of discontinuities, the stability constant (i.e., the norm of the solution operator) is bounded by a term independent of the number of jumps. We emphasize that no periodicity of the coefficients is required. By selecting the wave speed function in a certain \resonant" way, we construct a class of oscillatory configurations, such that the stability constant grows exponentially in the frequency. This paper concerns the initial-boundary value problem to 2D micropolar equations without angular viscosity in a smooth bounded domain. It is shown that such a system admits a unique and global weak solution. A universal geometric cluster algebra over an exchange matrix B is a universal object in the category of geometric cluster algebras over B related by coefficient specializations. (Following an earlier paper on universal geometric cluster algebras, we broaden the definition of geometric cluster algebras relative to the definition originally given Fomin and Zelevinsky.) The universal objects are closely related to a fan F_B called the mutation fan for B. In this paper, we consider universal geometric cluster algebras and mutation fans for cluster algebras arising from marked surfaces. We identify two crucial properties of marked surfaces: The Curve Separation Property and the Null Tangle Property. The latter property implies the former. We prove the Curve Separation Property for all marked surfaces except once-punctured surfaces without boundary components, and as a result we obtain a construction of the rational part of F_B for these surfaces. We prove the Null Tangle Property for a smaller family of surfaces, and use it to construct universal geometric coefficients for these surfaces., Comment: 39 pages, 24 figures. In the present paper we advocate the Howland-Evans approach to solution of the abstract non-autonomous Cauchy problem (non-ACP) in a separable Banach space X. The main idea is to reformulate this problem as an autonomous Cauchy problem (ACP) in a new Banach space L^p(I,X), consisting of X-valued functions on the time-interval I. The fundamental observation is a one-to-one correspondence between solution operators (propagators) for a non-ACP and the corresponding evolution semigroups for ACP in L^p(I,X). We show that the latter also allows to apply a full power of the operator-theoretical methods to scrutinise the non-ACP including the proof of the Trotter product approximation formulae with operator-norm estimate of the rate of convergence. In a joint paper [4] by Otsubo, Terasoma and the first author, we proved that the special value 3F2(a,b,q;a+b,q;1) of the generalized hypergeometric function is a linear combination of log of algebraic numbers if the triplet (a,b,q) of rational numbers satisfies a certain numerical condition. However there remains a question how to obtain explicit descriptions of the values. This paper is the continuation of a previous paper (H. Knupfer and C. B. Muratov, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 66 (2013), 1129‐1162). We investigate the classical isoperimetric problem modified by an addition of a nonlocal repulsive term generated by a kernel given by an inverse power of the distance. In this work, we treat the case of a general space dimension. We obtain basic existence results for minimizers with sufficiently small masses. For certain ranges of the exponent in the kernel, we also obtain nonexistence results for sufficiently large masses, as well as a characterization of minimizers as balls for sufficiently small masses and low spatial dimensionality. The physically important special case of three space dimensions and Coulombic repulsion is included in all the results mentioned above. In particular, our work yields a negative answer to the question if stable atomic nuclei at arbitrarily high atomic numbers can exist in the framework of the classical liquid drop model of nuclear matter. In all cases the minimal energy scales linearly with mass for large masses, even if the infimum of energy cannot be attained. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The paper studies the solution of stochastic optimization problems in which approximations to the gradient and Hessian are obtained through subsampling. We first consider Newton-like methods that employ these approximations and discuss how to coordinate the accuracy in the gradient and Hessian to yield a superlinear rate of convergence in expectation. The second part of the paper analyzes an inexact Newton method that solves linear systems approximately using the conjugate gradient (CG) method, and that samples the Hessian and not the gradient (the gradient is assumed to be exact). We provide a complexity analysis for this method based on the properties of the CG iteration and the quality of the Hessian approximation, and compare it with a method that employs a stochastic gradient iteration instead of the CG method. We report preliminary numerical results that illustrate the performance of inexact subsampled Newton methods on machine learning applications based on logistic regression., 37 pages

In this paper, we consider the almost periodic dynamics of an impulsive multispecies Lotka-Volterra competition system with time delays on time scales. By establishing some comparison theorems of dynamic equations with impulses and delays on time scales, a permanence result for the model is obtained. Furthermore, based on the permanence result, by studying the Lyapunov stability theory of impulsive dynamic equations on time scales, we establish a criterion for the existence and uniformly asymptotic stability of a unique positive almost periodic solution of the system. Finally, we give an example to show the feasibility of our main results and our example also shows that the continuous time system and its corresponding discrete time system have the same dynamics. Classical mechanical systems are modeled by a symplectic manifold $(M,\omega)$, and their symmetries, encoded in the action of a Lie group $G$ on $M$ by diffeomorphisms that preserves $\omega$. These actions, which are called "symplectic", have been studied in the past forty years, following the works of Atiyah, Delzant, Duistermaat, Guillemin, Heckman, Kostant, Souriau, and Sternberg in the 1970s and 1980s on symplectic actions of compact abelian Lie groups that are, in addition, of "Hamiltonian" type, i.e. they also satisfy Hamilton's equations. Since then a number of connections with combinatorics, finite dimensional integrable Hamiltonian systems, more general symplectic actions, and topology, have flourished. In this paper we review classical and recent results on Hamiltonian and non Hamiltonian symplectic group actions roughly starting from the results of these authors. The aim of this paper is to derive and analyze a variational model for the joint estimation of motion and reconstruction of image sequences, which is based on a time-continuous Eulerian motion model. The model can be set up in terms of the continuity equation or the brightness constancy equation. The analysis in this paper focuses on the latter for robust motion estimation on sequences of twodimensional images. We rigorously prove the existence of a minimizer in a suitable function space setting. Moreover, we discuss the numerical solution of the model based on primal-dual algorithms and investigate several examples. We prove that, when considering characteristic functions of sets, this norm is related to the perimeter. A byproduct of our analysis is a new characterization of the perimeter of sets in terms of this norm, independent of the theory of distributions. This paper is dedicated to the Oldroyd-B model with fractional dissipation $(-\Delta)^{\alpha}\tau$ for any $\alpha>0$. We establish the global smooth solutions to the Oldroyd-B model in the corotational case with arbitrarily small fractional powers of the Laplacian in two spatial dimensions. The methods described here are quite different from the tedious iterative approach used in recent paper \cite{XY}. Moreover, in the Appendix we provide some a priori estimates to the Oldroyd-B model in the critical case which may be useful and of interest for future improvement. Finally, the global regularity to to the Oldroyd-B model in the corotational case with $-\Delta u$ replaced by $(-\Delta)^{\gamma}u$ for $\gamma>1$ are also collected in the Appendix. The paper is an attempt to investigate the issues of asymptotic analysis for problems involving fractional Laplacian where the domains tend to become unbounded in one-direction. Motivated from the pioneering work on second-order elliptic problems by Chipot and Rougirel in [On the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of elliptic problems in cylindrical domains becoming unbounded, Commun. Contemp. Math. 4(1) (2002) 15–44], where the force functions are considered on the cross-section of domains, we prove the non-local counterpart of their result.Recently in [Asymptotic behavior of elliptic nonlocal equations set in cylinders, Asymptot. Anal. 89(1–2) (2014) 21–35] Yeressian established a weighted estimate for solutions of non-local Dirichlet problems which exhibit the asymptotic behavior. The case when [Formula: see text] was also treated as an example to show how the weighted estimate might be used to achieve the asymptotic behavior. In this paper, we extend this result to each order between [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text].

In this paper, we consider a nonlinear interaction system between the barotropic mode and the first baroclinic mode of the tropical atmosphere with moisture; that was derived in [Frierson, D.M.W.; Majda, A.J.; Pauluis, O.M.: Dynamics of precipitation fronts in the tropical atmosphere: a novel relaxation limit, Commum. Math. Sci., 2 (2004), 591-626.] We establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to this system, with initial data in $H^1$, for each fixed convective adjustment relaxation time parameter $\varepsilon>0$. Moreover, if the initial data enjoy slightly more regularity than $H^1$, then the unique strong solution depends continuously on the initial data. Furthermore, by establishing several appropriate $\varepsilon$-independent estimates, we prove that the system converges to a limiting system, as the relaxation time parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, with convergence rate of the order $O(\sqrt\varepsilon)$. Moreover, the limiting system has a unique global strong solution, for any initial data in $H^1$, and such unique strong solution depends continuously on the initial data if the the initial data posses slightly more regularity than $H^1$. Notably, this solves the VISCOUS VERSION of an open problem proposed in the above mentioned paper of Frierson, Majda and Pauluis.

In this paper, we present the convergence analysis of the rectangular Morley element scheme utilised on the second order problem in arbitrary dimensions. Specifically, we prove that the convergence of the scheme is of $\mathcal{O}(h)$ order in energy norm and of $\mathcal{O}(h^2)$ order in $L^2$ norm on general $d$-rectangular grids. Moreover, when the grid is uniform, the convergence rate can be of $\mathcal{O}(h^2)$ order in energy norm, and the convergence rate in $L^2$ norm is still of $\mathcal{O}(h^2)$ order, which can not be improved. This includes the construction of branching foliations and leaf conjugacies on three-dimensional manifolds with solvable fundamental group. Classification results in higher-dimensional settings are also discussed. In this paper, we show super-linear propagation in a nonlocal reaction-diffusion-mutation equation modeling the invasion of cane toads in Australia that has attracted attention recently from the mathematical point of view. The population of toads is structured by a phenotypical trait that governs the spatial diffusion. In this paper, we are concerned with the case when the diffusivity can take unbounded values, and we prove that the population spreads as $t^{3/2}$. We also get the sharp rate of spreading in a related local model.

This paper proposes a numerical upscaling procedure for elliptic boundary value problems with diffusion tensors that vary randomly on small scales. The method compresses the random partial differential operator to an effective quasilocal deterministic operator that represents the expected solution on a coarse scale of interest. Error estimates consisting of a priori and a posteriori terms are provided that allow one to quantify the impact of uncertainty in the diffusion coefficient on the expected effective response of the process.

Whether, in the presence of a boundary, solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations converge to a solution to the Euler equations in the vanishing viscosity limit is unknown. In a seminal 1983 paper, Tosio Kato showed that the vanishing viscosity limit is equivalent to having sufficient control of the gradient of the Navier-Stokes velocity in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity. In a 2008 paper, the present author showed that the vanishing viscosity limit is equivalent to the formation of a vortex sheet on the boundary.
