Abstract

International audience; Metal oxide semiconductors hold great promise for applications in energy conversion and storage, environmental remediation, and other areas. However, critical factors such as the high rate of charge-carrier recombinations and limited light absorption have restricted more practical and viable applications (Saji et al, 2013). Plasmonic nanostructures of noble metals have been attracting significant attention for their ability to interact with light from visible to near IR range through the creation of resonant surface plasmon (Stewart et al, 2008). Plasmonic nanostructures of noble metals in combination with semiconductors offer a promising future for the next generation of energy needs. Various methods have been described for the synthesis of TiO2 and metal nanoparticles hybrid. In this study, GNPs were fabricated in a thin film of nanocrystalline TiO2 by sol-gel spin coating method. The thickness can be adjusted by repeating the cycle from adding the Titanium alkoxide precursor on the substrate after calcination at 450˚C. The morphology of the nanocomposite and the phases of the films were determined by SEM and Raman. The interaction with noble metal and semiconductor nanostructures under visible light is investigated. Particularly, we study the photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue (BM) and Bisphenol A (BPA) under visible light using Au-TiO2 and Au-ZnO as photocatalysts. Green laser emitting at 532 nm was used to excite the resonance band of the GNPs. The influence of various parameters such as irradiation time, laser power, and catalyst type and amount has been studied.

Abstract

International audience; Here we demonstrate the feasibility of “nanoplasmonic” catalysis on an industrial application reaction. Indeed we report that oxidation of glycerol (co-product of biodiesel production) can be catalyzed at room temperature by green laser excitation of supported GNPs. Visible irradiation of the Plasmon band of GNPs in the presence of base under an oxygen atmosphere results in the formation of oxidation products such as glyceric acid and tartronic acid, while the reaction does not occur in the absence of laser irradiation. 93% of glycerol was converted after 2 h of reaction at ambient temperature. The influence of the support type and laser power on the oxidation rate and product selectivity was investigated. It seems like GNPs/TiO2 are significantly more efficient than GNPs/ZnO and GNPs/Al2O3.

Abstract

International audience; Plasmonic nanoparticles can absorb light and convert it to heat, which is thereafter transferred to the surrounding environment. Simultaneously, gold nanoparticles (GNPs) show catalytic activity in many reactions. Therefore, GNPs can serve as both local nanoscale-heat sinks and catalysts to drive chemical reactions. This could in principle be realized by a laser-induced selective excitation of the surface Plasmon resonance of nanoparticles at a particular wavelength. Recently, this principle has been used in order to catalyze the production of 4-benzoylmorpholine from benzaldehyde and morpholine via amide formation. Furthermore, it was used to increase the yield of Suzuki coupling. In the present work, we provide a proof which demonstrates the concept of laser-assisted catalyzed oxidation of glycerol and methanol at room temperature. Alumina supported or unsupported GNPs with different stabilizing agents were used in liquid or gas phase catalytic reactions, respectively. Green laser emitting 2.6 W at 532 nm was used to excite the resonance band of the GNPs. The first experimental investigations show that the laser activation is more advantageous than the conventional macroscopic heating in terms of conversion rate of glycerol and of stability of the catalyst.
