Abstract: International audience; The analysis of archaeological textiles is a primary source of knowledge about past societies, and the information it provides is remarkably diverse. However, special preservation conditions are needed to obtain an accurate picture of the use of textiles, particularly in the making of clothing. In Tomb 14 at the site of Burgast (Altai Mountains, Mongolia), excavated in 2016 by the French archaeological mission in Mongolia and the Institute of Archaeology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the particular local conditions favoured the preservation of organic materials, including the complete clothing worn by the mummy of a child belonging to the Bulan-Kobin culture. This paper examines several questions on the origin of the raw material used and the role of these garments in funerary practices. The fibre analysis indicates that the silk and taffeta fabrics used to dress the mummy likely from China. We consider a plurality of sources (historical, archaeological, technical study analysis), as silk could have travelled. Our study of the tailoring shows that some of the textiles were probably re-used and provides new insights into clothing design and know-how. We argue that the deceased was dressed with care, and we propose that specific, non-quotidian garments were used for the funeral ceremony. Together, these findings contribute to describing little-known aspects of the Bulan-Kobin culture and hypotheses about its relations within the Xiongnu confederation.

Abstract: Sex identification from fragmentary archeozoological assemblages is particularly challenging in the Equid family, including for horses, donkeys and their hybrids. This limitation has precluded in-depth investigations of sex-ratio variation in various temporal, geographic and social contexts. Recently, shallow DNA sequencing has offered an economical solution to equine sex determination, even in environments where DNA preservation conditions is not optimal. In this study, we applied state-of-the-art methods in ancient DNA-based equine sex determination to 897 osseous remains in order to assess whether equal proportions of males and females could be found in a range of archeological contexts in France. We found Magdalenian horse hunt not focused on isolated bachelors, and Upper Paleolithic habitats and natural traps equally balancing sex ratios. In contrast, Iron Age sacrificial rituals appeared to have been preferentially oriented to male horses and this practice extended into the Roman Period. During Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Modern Period, cities emerged as environments largely dominated by horse males. This strong sex-bias was considerably reduced, and sometimes even absent, in various rural contexts. Combined with previous archaeozoological work and textual evidence, our results portray an urban economy fueled by adult, often old, males, and rural environments where females and subadults of both sexes were maintained to sustain production demands., We thank Agnès Orsoni, Michela Leonardi, and Stefanie Wagner for lab assistance and all members of the AGES research team at CAGT for fruitful discussions. Abstract: Alongside horses, donkeys and their first-generation hybrids represent members of the Equidae family known for their social, economic and symbolic importance in protohistoric and historical France. However, their relative importance and their respective roles in different regions and time periods are difficult to assess based on textual, iconographic and archaeological evidence. This is both due to incomplete, partial and scattered historical sources and difficulties to accurately assign fragmentary archaeological remains at the proper taxonomic level. DNA- based methods, however, allow for a robust identification of the taxonomic status of ancient equine osseous material from minimal sequence data. Here, we leveraged shallow ancient DNA sequencing and the dedicated Zonkey computational pipeline to obtain the first baseline distribution for horses, mules and donkeys in France from the Iron Age to the Modern period. Our collection includes a total of 873 ancient specimens spanning 128 sites and comprising 717 horses, 100 donkeys, 55 mules and a single hinny individual. While horses were ubiquitous and the most dominant species identified, our dataset reveals the importance of mule breeding during Roman times, especially between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE (Common Era), where they represented between 20.0% and 34.2% of equine assemblages. In contrast, donkeys were almost absent from northern France as- semblages during the whole Roman period, but replaced mules in rural and urban commercial and economic centers from the early Middle Ages. Our work also identified donkeys of exceptional size during Late Antiquity, which calls for a deep reassessment of the true morphological space of past equine species. Abstract: Strontium isotopic analysis of sequentially formed tissues, such as tooth enamel, is commonly used to study provenance and mobility of humans and animals. However, the potential of 87Sr/86Sr in tooth enamel to track high-frequency movements has not yet been established, in part due to the lack of data on modern animals of known movement and predictive model of isotope variation across the landscape. To tackle this issue, we measured the 87Sr/86Sr in plant samples taken from a 2000 km2 area in the Altai Mountains (Mongolia), and the 87Sr/86Sr in tooth enamel of domestic caprines whose mobility was monitored using GPS tracking. We show that high-resolution, sequential profiles of strontium isotope composition of tooth enamel reliably reflect the high-frequency mobility of domestic livestock and that short-term residency of about 45 days can be resolved. This offers new perspectives in various disciplines, including forensics, ecology, palaeoanthropology, and bioarchaeology.

Abstract: Horses and donkeys have had a far-reaching impact on human history, providing mechanical power for agriculture and transportation. Their F1-hybrids, especially mules, have also been of considerable importance due to their exceptional strength, endurance and resistance. The reconstruction of the respective role that horses, donkeys and mules played in past societies requires prior identification of their osseous elements in archaeological assemblages. This, however, remains difficult on the basis of morphological data alone and in the absence of complete skeletal elements. While DNA sequencing provides almost certain identification success, this approach requires dedicated infrastructure and sufficient ancient DNA (aDNA) preservation. Here, we assessed the performance of a cost-effective alternative approach based on geometric morphometric (GMM) analysis of the bony labyrinth, a structure carried within the petrosal bone. This extremely compact osseous structure provides good aDNA preservation and is frequently found in archaeological assemblages. To assess the GMM performance, we first used High-throughput DNA sequencing to identify 41 horses, 24 donkeys, 36 mules and one hinny from 11 archaeological sites from France and Turkey spanning different time periods. This provided a panel of 102 ancient equine remains for micro-computed tomography (microCT) and GMM assessment of the variation of the bony labyrinth shape, including the cochlea and the semicircular canals. Our new method shows good-to-excellent prediction rates (85.7%-95.2%) for the identification of species and hybrids when considering the cochlea and semicircular canals together. It provides a cheap, non-destructive alternative to aDNA for the taxonomic identification of past equine assemblages. Abstract: Recent research traces the origins of Mongolian horse herding and riding as far as the late Bronze Age Deer Stone-Khirigsuur Complex (DSKC), a tradition known from its standing stones, burials, and monuments. DSKC monument sites are often found with large numbers of partial (“head and hoof”) horse burials buried at the monument periphery. However, despite the ubiquity of ritual horse inhumations, key questions remain regarding the process and significance of DSKC horse ritual. Here, we present detailed taphonomic, osteological, and cut-mark analysis of 21 individual horse burials from deer stones and khirigsuur mounds across Mongolia. Our results indicate a diversity of slaughter practices among horses at DSK sites, including blunt trauma to the forehead region with small and large implements and possibly throat-slitting. While the head, cervical vertebrae, and phalanges are the most commonly recovered elements from these sites, element presence and absence indicates the occasional inclusion of the tail and limb elements, which may be explained by the presence of connecting skin and soft tissue (e.g. hide). Most significantly, cut mark analysis demonstrates that elements found in DSK features were not only disarticulated, but were often stripped of meat – including vertebral muscle and tongue removal. These results indicate that the spread of horse-based ritual practices in Mongolia was coupled with the removal (and likely consumption) of horse meat, suggesting that, beyond their role in transportation, the role of horses as livestock was both socially and economically significant during the late second millennium BCE.

Abstract: International audience; The horse, as a domestic animal, had a strong impact on the organisation of ancient societies of the eastern steppes of Eurasia by enabling people to move faster and transport goods and people more efficiently. This newfound mobility was accompanied by profound changes in the expression of ritual practices, and horses are repeatedly found in funerary monuments of the Late Bronze Age in Mongolia. While recent advances in research have highlighted the link between the presence of horses in ritual monuments and their role in the pastoralist diet, little is yet known about their practical contexts – including the season in which the animals were slaughtered and the time of year when the funerary and ritual sites were visited. In modern Mongolia, horse meat is consumed during winter, but the antiquity of this practice is currently undocumented. Here, we use stable oxygen isotope variations (δ18O) recorded by developing molars of horses to estimate the season of slaughter of two horses deposited at the Late Bronze Age khirgisuur of Burgast (Bayan-Ölgii province, western Mongolia). The analysis of a modern reference set consisting of five horses from the same locality shows that it is possible to date the time of death with a resolution of the order of the season. Isotopic analysis of the two ancient horses suggests that they were slaughtered in early (November) and late (February) winter. Zooarchaeological evidence reveals that while the first horse was deposited shortly after death, the second was deposited several months after death, following open-air exposure. These preliminary results provide an important landmark to document the multi-dimensional aspects (economic, social, as well as cultural) of the role of horses in the ritual practices of Bronze Age Mongolia. They indicate that the timing of horse deposition is more complex than previously thought. They also demonstrate that winter slaughtering of horses dates back to the Late Bronze Age and was probably constrained by a combination of economic and practical decisions regarding meat preservation. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract: International audience; The assessment of the date of death (DOD) of animals found in archaeological sites provides insights into the exploitation of their environment by ancient mobile and sedentary populations. In an attempt to overcome the limitations of the traditional methods, we determine the DOD of domestic caprines using sequential oxygen isotope analysis of developing tooth enamel. We built a reference set composed of developing molars from 14 modern sheep and goats from Western and Central Mongolia with known DOD. The teeth were sequentially sampled, and δ 18 O sequences were modelled using a cosine function in order to position the lowermost δ 18 O value (δ f) within the annual cycle. We found that δ f values are strongly linearly correlated with the DOD (R 2 ¼ 0.88), allowing the use of this regression to estimate the DOD with a precision of about �25 d (1σ). This method was applied to determine the DOD of caprines found in two graves in the Xiongnu necropolis of Egiin Gol, Mongolia. We determined a slaughter date of late July and late September for the two graves, respectively, suggesting that burial occurred during the warm season. By combining this information with age at death assessed using tooth eruption stages and tooth wear patterns, we were also able to determine that caprine birth occurred mostly in April and was strongly controlled within this seasonal window by the herders, much like in Mongolia today.

Abstract: International audience; Deer stone and khirigsuur complexes are monuments that are characteristic of the Late Bronze Age (1200-700 BC) of the steppes of central and northern Mongolia. The khirigsuurs are made up of a large central mound around which are distributed peripheral structures: mounds and circles of stones. The peripheral mounds cover heads, vertebrae and phalanges of horses. At the centre of the circles of stones, the deposits consist of the burnt bones of caprines. This article discusses the ingredients that will allow us to better understand the gestures performed as part of the activities around the ritual monuments at Tsatsyn Ereg (Mongolia). The presence in certain mounds of a cranium and mandibles belonging to two different individuals reveals that the explanation for the horse deposits is more complicated than a simple action of in situ sacrifice. Analysis of age at death reveals that elderly animals are numerous. Males form a strong majority. The analysis of the almost 12 000 calcined remains recovered from the circles reveals that teeth and feet of caprines are disproportionately represented. The paper links the circles of stones that delimit the fireplaces with the action of purification. For the khirigsuur B10, the analysis of the alignment of the mounds and the stone circles and the orientation of the horses gives the impression of a herd of horses taking or pulling the deceased towards the rising sun. The communal aspect of the activities conducted around these large tombs is evident. We perceive all of the complexity of the deer stone and khirigsuur (DSK) phenomenon, which is simultaneously social and religious.; Les complexes de pierres à cerf et de khirigsuur sont des monuments caractéristiques de l’âge du Bronze tardif (1200-700 av. J.-C.) des steppes du centre et du nord de la Mongolie. Les khirigsuurs sont constitués d’un grand tertre central autour duquel sont réparties des structures périphériques : tertres et cercles de pierres. Les tertres périphériques recouvrent des têtes, des vertèbres et des phalanges de chevaux. Au centre des cercles de pierres, les dépôts sont constitués d’os brûlés de caprinés. Cet article discute des moyens de mieux comprendre les gestes menés dans le cadre des activités autour de monuments situés à Tsatsyn Ereg (Mongolie). La présence sous certains tertres d’un crâne et de mandibules appartenant à deux individus différents révèle que l’explication des dépôts des chevaux est plus complexe qu’une simple action de sacrifice in situ. L’analyse de l’âge à la mort révèle que les animaux âgés sont nombreux. Les mâles forment une forte majorité. L’analyse des près de 12 000 restes calcinés mis au jour dans les cercles indique que les dents et les pieds sont représentés de façon dis-proportionnée. L’article relie les cercles de pierres délimitant les feux à l’action de purification. Pour le khirigsuur B10, l’analyse des alignements de tertres et de cercles de pierres et de l’orientation des chevaux donne l’impression qu’un troupeau de chevaux prend ou tire le défunt vers le soleil levant. Abstract: International audience; 18 Textile technology strongly advanced with sedentism and pastoralism. During prehistory, many 19 populations settled in central Eurasia, a place of extensive exchange and cultural contact. In the 20 Taklamakan desert, the dry climate enabled good preservation of ancient textiles. The study presented 21 here aimed to identify animal fibres from Bronze Age and Iron Age sites in the Keriya valley 22 (Xinjiang, China) using proteomics. A large corpus of 109 keratin extracts obtained from raw fibres or 23 textiles was analysed, enabling us to establish a corrected and improved list of peptide markers for the 24 identification of species, not only among the family Bovidae, but also for camels and humans. In total, 25 we were able to identify 97% of the sampled objects to the taxonomic level of tribe and 85% of 26 caprines to the level of genus. The assemblage was dominated by hair of sheep (57.8%) followed by 27 goat (16.5%), cattle (8.3%), camel (0.9%), human (0.9%) and non-differentiated Caprinae (sheep or 28 goat) (12.8%). The study showed a continuity between the two sites in this respect. It revealed a 29 choice of raw material linked to the function of the textile, with most woven textiles being made from 30 sheep's wool and most pelt being obtained from goat. Comparison with the bone assemblage of one of 31 the sites provided insight into the herd management strategies. The results confirm the heuristic 32 potential of the proteomic approach for the determination of archaeological fibres and for textiles 33 studies in general. Abstract: Summary Horse domestication revolutionized warfare and accelerated travel, trade, and the geographic expansion of languages. Here, we present the largest DNA time series for a non-human organism to date, including genome-scale data from 149 ancient animals and 129 ancient genomes (≥1-fold coverage), 87 of which are new. This extensive dataset allows us to assess the modern legacy of past equestrian civilizations. We find that two extinct horse lineages existed during early domestication, one at the far western (Iberia) and the other at the far eastern range (Siberia) of Eurasia. None of these contributed significantly to modern diversity. We show that the influence of Persian-related horse lineages increased following the Islamic conquests in Europe and Asia. Multiple alleles associated with elite-racing, including at the MSTN “speed gene,” only rose in popularity within the last millennium. Abstract: International audience; The deer stone and khirgisuur (DSK) monumental complexes are iconic elements of the Late Bronze Age (c. 1200–700 BC) ceremonial mortuary landscape of the Eastern Eurasian Steppe. A precise chronological framework of these monuments is crucial for understanding their ritual and funerary roles, as well as their wider social functions. The authors establish the first high-precision chronology for a large DSK complex in central Mongolia using 100 new radiocarbon dates. Their chronology suggests that the construction of this DSK complex extended over approximately 50 years, perhaps requiring only locally available human and animal resources, without the need to draw on those of wider regional networks.

Abstract: International audience; The Roman conquest of Gaul is usually perceived as the trigger of morphological changes in livestock and, more widely, the origin of an important agropastoral evolution. However, recent studies suggest that the economic transition between the Iron Age and Roman periods occurred much earlier than previously thought and was partially disconnected from Italy. This article, based on the morphometric analysis of pig teeth and bones, sheds new light on this transition. It reveals a more complex agropastoral change process, in two distinct phases, from the Middle La Tène period and after the creation of the Roman Empire. Moreover, it identifies two large economic models, around the Mediterranean platform and in the temperate part of Europe, with different paces of change, production objectives, and agricultural and market strategies.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses the question of animal remains (isolated bones and complete skeletons) discovered in the fill of Roman sanctuary wells in northern France and their links with the dismantling of places of worship from the 3rd c. onwards. Several recently excavated sites (Vieil-Évreux, Mesnil-Saint-Nicaise and Ménestreau) and some comparative sites are presented. The main objective of the paper is to determine to what extent the animal remains are linked to the process of destruction and deconsecration. It demonstrates different animal deposits: those trapped naturally, those thrown away voluntarily and those from raptor pellets. For the latter, it appears that some rare habitation site species (raptors, corvids) played a particular role in the abandonment of these wells. The question of their prophylactic or magical role is also addressed. Alongside these wild species, the paper also considers the role of domestic animals (e.g., ox, pig, dog and cat) found in the assemblages. It appears that the principal objective of these deposits was to render the structure unsuitable and to prevent any subsequent use by contaminating the wells and making the water inaccessible and impure.; L’article aborde la question des restes d’animaux (os isolés et squelettes complets) découverts dans le comblement des puits des sanctuaires romains du nord de la France et leur lien avec le démantèlement des lieux de culte à partir du IIIe s. Plusieurs sites récemment fouillés (Vieil-Évreux, Mesnil-Saint-Nicaise et Ménestreau) et quelques ensembles de comparaisons sont présentés. L’objectif principal est de déterminer dans quelle mesure ces animaux – ou une partie d’entre eux – sont liés au processus de destruction et de déconsécration. L’étude fait apparaître différents types d’animaux : ceux piégés naturellement ou apportés par les pelotes de réjections de rapaces, et ceux qui ont été jetés là volontairement. Parmi ces derniers, certaines espèces sont assez rares sur les sites d’habitat (les rapaces, les corvidés) et semblent pouvoir tenir un rôle particulier dans l’abandon de ces puits : la question de leur rôle prophylactique ou magique est abordée. Aux côtés de ces espèces sauvages, les assemblages sont aussi constitués de cadavres d’animaux domestiques (boeuf, porc, chien et chat) qui peuvent également exercer une fonction particulière. Il apparaît possible que l’objectif principal a été de rendre impropre la structure, empêchant ainsi toute utilisation ultérieure. Plus qu’un abandon, il ressort de ces comblements – incluant cadavres d’animaux et oiseaux de mauvais augure – une volonté active de contaminer le puits, de rendre l’eau inaccessible et impure.

Abstract: Among the five kinds of animals Mongolian herders breed (i.e. horses Equus caballus Linnaeus, 1758, camels Camelus bactrianus Linnaeus, 1758, cattle Bos taurus Linnaeus, 1758, Bos grunniens Linnaeus, 1766, and their hybrids, sheep Ovis aries Linnaeus, 1758, and goats Capra hircus Linnaeus, 1758), the horse holds a particular status, perceivable in the slaughtering techniques used and the way its skull is treated after death. Leaving horse skulls in high places (i.e. trees, mountains, and ovoos − stone cairns erected in homage to the master spirits of a place) is a common, though poorly understood, practice. This article studies the modalities of these horse skull repositories within an interdisciplinary approach, combining social anthropology and osteology. The study of the choice of place for the skulls and their associated objects highlights the differentiation processes among the horses as individuals, in relation to their lifetime status. This relation between human and horses unfolds into the landscape, which is invested with numerous ovoo cairns and horse skulls; a reminder that these spaces are shared between humans, horses and invisible entities. In the absence of private land ownership on the Mongolian steppe and in the interest of a balanced coexistence with all the inhabitants of this shared land, we show that the horse skull repositories subtly combine honour to individual horses, respect to the master spirits of the land, and discrete appropriation of territory by herders.

Abstract: Depuis les débuts de l’agriculture, un des grands défis des systèmes agricoles a été d’assurer l’équilibre alimentaire de populations en expansion constante, quels que soient les moyens de production et les retombées nuisibles pour l’environnement. Cette surexploitation des ressources naturelles a entraîné une diminution de la qualité et de la fertilité des sols de culture. Ainsi, pour contrer l’épuisement d’éléments nutritifs et la détérioration de la structure du sol, des apports d’éléments minéraux et matières organiques se révélaient nécessaires. L’utilisation importante des engrais minéraux au cours du XXe siècle a laissé place aujourd’hui à l’emploi de matières fertilisantes d’origine résiduaire (Mafor), majoritairement des fumiers d’élevage. Bien que l’incorporation de ces fertilisants ait contribué au développement des cultures, en améliorant notablement le rendement et la qualité de la production, l’usage excessif d’engrais a eu comme conséquence la dégradation et la contamination des sols et des eaux. Dès 2012, une réflexion a été engagée en France sur une utilisation raisonnée des Mafor en agriculture, nourrie par une expertise scientifique collective sur ses effets agronomiques et environnementaux, et sur les contraintes économiques et sociales qui en découlent. Cette problématique n’est pas nouvelle. Les indices archéologiques montrent que la préoccupation de corriger les déséquilibres nutritionnels du sol remonte à des époques très anciennes. Les traces de pratiques d’amendement des parcelles cultivées sont déjà perceptibles pour des champs fossiles du Néolithique moyen. Diverses méthodologies ont été utilisées pour identifier l’apport de fumier dès les débuts de l’agriculture et durant les millénaires suivants : tessons erratiques de céramique, analyse de biomarqueurs d’anciens sols arables, identification de signatures de matières fécales dans les sols. Plus particulièrement, au sein des disciplines de l’archéobotanique (étude des restes archéologiques de plantes) ont été mises en oeuvre différentes techniques pour identifier des indices probants des stratégies développées par les agriculteurs du passé pour faire front au défi du maintien et de la bonification des sols.

Abstract: International audience; In Western Europe the transition from the Iron Age to the Roman period is the scene of a rapid economic and agro-pastoral evolution characterized in particular by a modification in the shape of the cattle. Understanding this phenomenon, its implementation mechanisms and development dynamics represents a major challenge in archaeozoology. In our study a local and regional approach of the evolution in cattle morphology is carried out first on the scale of the middle Seine valley, then of the northern Gaul. Its purpose is to observe and compare the evolution rates in domestic cattle between Middle La Tène and the fifth century AD, and with the help of a tight chronological and geographical grid, to estimate to what extent the shape of the cattle has been influenced by the indigenous cultures, the Roman economic pattern or even the environment. This osteometrical study is based on the Log Size Index method and on a measurement corpus of 12,969 bones collected on sites located on 117 communes in France (for most of them), Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The results we obtained show local specificities in terms of breeding methods and animal morphologies, observed on a very fine scale and taking place long before the Conquest. Moreover the growth patterns of the various herds happen to be different and to evolve under the impetus of the developing Roman economic pattern. This work thus points out an essential aspect of the agro-pastoral turmoil that took place in Gaul at the turning point of our era. The Roman pattern is not the cause of the morphological changes of the cattle, nor of the diversity in cattle shapes in Gaul, but it provokes a reshaping of the agricultural systems and a redefining of the breeding strategies which boost and completely change the cattle growth patterns.

Abstract: In Western Europe, at the turn of our era, the emergence of the Roman economic and agropastoral model is considered as the trigger for morphological changes experienced by livestock. This assumption is now undermined, reviving questions of the origin and mechanism of these changes as well as the influence of Gaul's agricultural particularities in the process. To investigate this question we used a geometric morphometric approach to study the phenotypic relationships of almost 600 dental remains of pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) from 11 Gallic and Italian sites, and pinpoint evidence of Roman or indigenous signature on the livestock. The comparison of these different samples allowed us to demonstrate that the link between the Roman and Gallic pigs is weak, and, more importantly, that each of the two territories seem to follow its own livestock management model. Furthermore, each region or settlement within Gaul adopted their own particular pastoral or supplying strategies; apart from two urban sites of central Gaul which showed clear phenotypic relationships with southern populations. These results suggest that the pigs' morphology depended mainly on agricultural and economic characteristics of the different territories, within Gaul and Italy, except perhaps on some urban sites with different supply strategies. It seems, therefore, that the changing economic environment impacted both provinces independently, or at least differently, since it cannot be excluded that there may have been some commercial relationships between them.

Abstract: Radiocarbon dating of the carbonate remaining in calcined bones is widely regarded as a viable alternative to date skeletal remains in situations where collagen is no longer present. However, anomalously low δ13C values measured in calcined bones prompted questions about the origin of the carbon used for dating. The goal of this study was to quantify the magnitude of carbon isotope exchange between bone carbonate and environmental CO2 for bones calcined under natural conditions. Four archaeological bones ranging in age between the Neolithic and the Medieval period were combusted on a separate open fire for up to 4 hr and subsamples of calcined bones were taken every hour. All the bones experienced a significant increase in IRSF values and decrease in carbonate content and δ13C values. 14C ages measured in the carbonate fraction of well-calcined bones indicate that 67 ± 3% to 91 ± 8% of the carbon present in bone carbonate was replaced by carbon from the atmosphere of combustion. This finding confirms previous results obtained under laboratory conditions and has serious implications for 14C dating of calcined bones found in archaeological contexts. The 14C age obtained on a calcined bone will only reflect the true age of the bone sample if the age difference between the bone and the charcoal can be neglected. Our results show also that δ13C values of calcined bones can be used to estimate the degree of C exchange and control for post-burial diagenetic alteration.

Abstract: Revisiting the origins of modern horses The domestication of horses was very important in the history of humankind. However, the ancestry of modern horses and the location and timing of their emergence remain unclear. Gaunitz et al. generated 42 ancient-horse genomes. Their source samples included the Botai archaeological site in Central Asia, considered to include the earliest domesticated horses. Unexpectedly, Botai horses were the ancestors not of modern domestic horses, but rather of modern Przewalski's horses. Abstract: Pastoral societies leave discrete marks in the archaeological record. As a result, the fine description and characterisation of past interactions between human-animal-environment within these societies is difficult. The isotopic analysis of the biological tissues of herd animals is a key entry point for understanding these interactions because it provides information on their feeding history, mobility and environment. However, this approach requires the establishment of robust reference sets in order to correctly interpret the results obtained on the archaeological material. The aim of this work was to validate isotope markers (C, N, O, Sr) of pastoral mobility and of the date of death of livestock. To this end, we equipped modern livestock (horse, sheep, goat) belonging to nomadic herders in the Mongolian Altai with GPS collars and analysed the isotopic composition of their biological tissues (hair, teeth) using sequential sampling. Our results show that frequent animal movements complicate the interpretation of isotope variations recorded by horse hair. On the other hand, the average δ13C value of hair and enamel and the anticovariation between δ13C and δ18O values measured in enamel can be used to infer the altitudinal mobility of the animals and the occupancy rate of alpine pastures. Strontium isotope mapping of the study area allowed us to discuss the use of Sr isotope variations in enamel to trace the geographical origin and movements of animals. Finally, modelling of the oxygen isotope time series in tooth enamel gives access to the date of death of caprines with an accuracy of a month. The isotopic analysis of the archaeological horses found in ritual and funerary contexts of the study area suggests a local origin together with the use of high altitude pastures as early as the Bronze Age. It also reveals the existence of a subsistence calendar favouring the winter slaughter of these horses.; Les sociétés pastorales laissent des marques discrètes dans le registre archéologique. De ce fait, la description et la caractérisation fines des interactions homme-animal-environnement dans le passé au sein de ces sociétés est difficile. L’analyse isotopique des tissus biologiques des animaux d’élevage est une clé d’entrée pour comprendre ces interactions car elle livre des informations sur l’histoire alimentaire, la mobilité et l’environnement de ces animaux. Cette approche nécessite néanmoins la mise en place de référentiels actuels de qualité afin d’interpréter correctement les résultats obtenus en contexte archéologique. Le présent travail a pour objectif de valider des marqueurs isotopiques (C, N, O, Sr) de la mobilité pastorale et de la date de mort du bétail. Nous avons pour cela équipé de colliers GPS le bétail (cheval, mouton, chèvre) de plusieurs troupeaux appartenant à des éleveurs nomades de l’Altaï mongol et exploité les données issues de l’analyse isotopique séquentielle des tissus biologiques à croissance continue ou prolongée (poil, dent) de ces animaux. Nos résultats montrent que les déplacements fréquents des animaux compliquent l’interprétation des variations isotopiques enregistrées par les crins des chevaux. En revanche, la valeur moyenne de δ13C du poil et de l’émail ainsi que l’anticovariation entre les valeurs de δ13C et δ18O mesurées dans l’émail peuvent être exploitées pour inférer la mobilité altitudinale des animaux et le taux d’occupation des étages alpins. La cartographie isotopique en strontium de la zone d’étude nous a permis de discuter l’utilisation des variations isotopiques en Sr de l’émail pour retracer l’origine géographique et les déplacements des animaux.
