Abstract

We derive a three-dimensional shear-wave velocity model of the Ligurian-Provence back-arc basin (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea) using ocean-bottom seismometers (AlpArray OBSs) and land stations from permanent and temporary seismic networks. The quality of OBS continuous records is enhanced by a specific processing that reduces instrumental and seabed-induced noises (transients, tilt, compliance). To further improve the resolution of ambient-noise tomography in the offshore area, we compute the Rayleigh-wave part of the Green functions for OBS-OBS pairs by using onshore stations as virtual sources. 2-D group-velocity maps and their uncertainties are computed in the 4 - 150 s period range by a transdimensional inversion of Rayleigh-wave travel times. The dispersion data and their uncertainties are inverted for a probabilistic 3-D shear-wave velocity model that includes probability densities for Vs and for the depth of layer interfaces. The probabilistic model is refined by a linearized inversion that accounts for the water layer in the Ligurian Sea. Our S-wave velocity and layer boundary probability models correspond well to a recent, high-resolution P-wave velocity cross-section derived from controlled-source seismic profiling along the Ligurian-Provence basin axis. A joint interpretation of the P- and S-wave velocity sections along this profile reveals a thin, anomalous oceanic crust of low P-wave velocities but high S-wave velocities, intruded by a gabbroic body. The illuminated part of the upper mantle appears to be devoid of serpentinization. The crustal structure of the basin is still debated, even though it has been probed by active seismic profiling. We compute a high-resolution shear-wave velocity model of the Ligurian-Provence basin and its margins by making optimal use of ambient-noise recordings of seafloor broadband seismometers. In particular, we improve the usually low quality of surface-wave signals in noise correlations between seafloor stations by involving correlations with land stations. The joint interpretation of our S-wave velocity model with a P-wave velocity section obtained in the basin axis by controlled-source seismic profiling provides compelling evidence for the presence of a thick sediment pile above a thin, ∼4.5 km-thick oceanic crust, intruded by gabbroic bodies emplaced at the crust-mantle transition. These results show the potential of a joint interpretation of P- and S-wave velocity models since they provide reliable answers to a number of debated questions on the petrological nature of the crust and uppermost mantle, in particular in the Ligurian-Provence basin.

Submitted version.; Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) is a powerful tool for quantitative seismic imaging from wide-azimuth seismic data. The method is based on the minimization of the misfit between observed and simulated data. This amounts to the resolution of a large-scale nonlinear minimization problem. The inverse Hessian operator plays a crucial role in this reconstruction process. Accounting accurately for the effect of this operator within the minimization scheme should correct for illumination deficits, restore the amplitude of the subsurface parameters, and help to remove artifacts generated by energetic multiple reflections. Conventional preconditioned gradient-based minimization methods only roughly approximate the effect of this operator. We are interested in this study to another class of minimization methods, named as truncated Newton methods. These methods are based on the computation of the model update through a matrix-free conjugate gradient resolution of the Newton linear system. The aim of this study is to present a feasible implementation of this method for the FWI problem, based on a second-order adjoint state formulation for the computation of Hessian-vector products. We compare this method with the nonlinear conjugate gradient and the l-BFGS method within the context of 2D acoustic frequency FWI for the reconstruction of P-wave velocity models. Two test cases are investigated. The first is the synthetic BP 2004 model, representative of the Gulf Of Mexico geology with high velocity contrasts associated with the presence of salt structures. The second is a 2D real data-set from the Valhall oil field in North sea. These tests emphasize the interesting properties of the truncated Newton method regarding conventional optimization methods within the context of FWI.

Abstract

Imaging tectonic faults with small vertical offsets in argilittes (clay-rock) using geophysical methods is challenging. In the context of deep radioactive waste disposals, the presence of such faults has to be assessed since they can modify the rock confining properties. In the Tournemire Experimental Platform (TEP, France), fault zones with small vertical offsets and complex shape have been identified from underground works. However, 3D high-resolution surface seismic methods have shown limitations in this context that led us to consider the detection and characterization of the faults directly from underground works. We investigate here the potential of seismic full waveform inversion (FWI) applied in a transmission configuration to image the clay-rock medium in a horizontal plane between galleries, and compare it with first-arrival traveltime tomography (FATT). Our objective is to characterize seismic velocities of a block of argilittes crossed by a subvertical fault zone with a small vertical offset. The specific measurement configuration allows us to neglect the influence of the galleries on the wave propagation and to simplify the problem by considering a 2D isotropic horizontal imaging domain. Our FWI scheme relies on a robust adaptation of early-arrival waveform tomography. The results obtained with FATT and FWI are in accordance and both correlate with the geological observations from the gallery walls and boreholes. We show that even though various simplifications are done in the inversion scheme and only a part of the data is used, FWI allows to get higher resolution images than FATT, and is especially less sensitive to the incomplete illumination as it uses also diffracted energy. The results provided in this study highlight the complexity of the fault zone, showing a complex interaction of the main fault system with a secondary system composed of decimetric fractures associated with the presence of water.

International audience; Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) is a powerful seismic imaging method, based on the iterative minimization of the distance between simulated and recorded wavefields. The inverse Hessian operator related to this misfit function plays an important role in the reconstruction scheme. As conventional methods use direct approximations of this operator, we investigate an alternative optimization scheme: the truncated Newton method. This two-nested-loops algorithm is based on the resolution of the Newton linear system through a matrix-free iterative solver at each outer iteration. On the 2D BP 2004 model widely used as a benchmark for FWI, the contrasts in wave velocities between salt structures and the upper water layer generate high amplitude multiple reflections. These multiple reflections strengthen the need for quite accurate approximation of the inverse Hessian operator and the truncated Newton method is shown to outperform than more conventional algorithms (l-BFGS, nonlinear conjugate gradient).

Abstract

International audience; Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) methods use generally gradient based method, such as the nonlinear conjugate gradient method or more recently the l-BFGS quasi-Newton method. Several authors have already investigated the possibility of accounting more accurately for the inverse Hessian operator in the minimization scheme through Gauss-Newton or exact Newton algorithms. We propose a general framework for the implementation of these methods inside a truncated Newton procedure. We demonstrate that the exact Newton method can outperform the standard gradient-based methods in a near-surface application case for recovering high-velocity concrete structures. In this particular configuration, large amplitude multi-scattered waves are generated, which are better taken into account using the exact-Newton method.

International audience; Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) applications classically rely on efficient first-order optimization schemes, as the steepest descent or the nonlinear conjugate gradient optimization. However, second-order information provided by the Hessian matrix is proven to give a useful help in the scaling of the FWI problem and in the speed-up of the optimization. In this study, we propose an efficient matrix-free Hessian-vector formalism, that should allow to tackle Gauss-Newton (GN) and Exact-Newton (EN) optimization for large and realistic FWI targets. Our method relies on general second order adjoint formulas, based on a Lagrangian formalism. These formulas yield the possibility of computing Hessian-vector products at the cost of 2 forward simulations per shot. In this context, the computational cost (per shot) of one GN or one EN nonlinear iteration amounts to the resolution of 2 forward simulations for the computation of the gradient plus 2 forward simulations per inner linear conjugate gradient iteration. A numerical test is provided, emphasizing the possible improvement of the resolution when accounting for the exact Hessian in the inversion algorithm.

Abstract

International audience; Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) is becoming an efficient tool to derive high resolution quantitative models of the subsurface parameters. The method relies on the minimization, through an iterative procedure, of the residual between recorded data and synthetic data computed by solving the two-way wave equation in a subsurface model. The growth of available computational resources and recent developments of the method makes now possible applications to 2D and 3D data in the acoustic approximation (see for example Prieux et al., 2011; Plessix et al., 2010) and even in the elastic approximation (Brossier et al 2009). Most of the FWI applications rely on fast optimization schemes as preconditioned steepest descent or preconditioned conjugate-gradient methods (PCG). Second-order information provided by the Hessian is often neglected in FWI, due to the high computational cost to build this matrix and solve the normal equation system. However, a significant improvement of the results can be obtained using this information: Pratt et al. (1998) have shown the improved resolution of Gauss-Newton method compared to the steepest descent one in a canonical application. Hu et al. (2011) have shown results improvement provided by a non-diagonal truncated Hessian in PCG. Brossier et al. (2009) have shown the estimated Hessian's impact of a quasi-Newton l-BFGS (Nocedal, 1980), on image resolution and convergence speed compared to PCG. Epanomeritakis et al. (2008); Fichtner and Trampert (2011) have also discussed the interest of Hessian for inversion and uncertainty estimation, and also the prohibitive cost of Hessian computation and storage. In this study, we develop the mathematical framework to propose an efficient matrix-free Hessian-vector product algorithm for FWI, and give an illustration of the interest of accounting for the exact Hessian in the inversion process. The final aim is to tackle Gauss-Newton and Full-Newton method for large scale applications. Our development relies on a general second-order adjoint-state formula, valid either in the time or in the frequency domain.

Abstract

International audience; In the presence of a thin-bed, i.e., when a layer is thin compared to the wavelength of the seismic or electromagnetic signal propagating through it, it is impossible to detect and individualize reflections coming from the two surfaces forming the thin layer. In this case, multiple reflections coming from the two sides of the bed create interferences and generate complex reflection patterns. When multioffset data are available, Amplitude Variations of reflectivity according to Offset (AVO) have been increasingly used in seismic interpretation and more recently tested on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data. Phase and frequency sensitivities of the reflected signals are generally not used, although they contain useful information. The present study proposes an original inversion methodology designed for 1D media and denoted DAPVO (Dispersion of Amplitude and Phases Versus Offset curves). It combines all reflectivity properties (amplitude, phase and dispersion) of a reflected GPR signal generated by a thin-bed embedded within a homogeneous material, a situation often encountered in fractured media, for example. Dispersive properties of the dielectric permittivity of investigated materials (homogeneous formation, thin bed) are described using a Jonscher parameterization, which permitted study of the sensitivity of amplitude and phase variations with offset (APVO) curves on frequency and thin-bed properties (filling nature, aperture). We discuss and illustrate using synthetics the simplifying assumptions and careful corrections which are necessary to convert raw Common Mid-Point (CMP) reflected data into dispersive APVO curves. In particular, the propagation and radiation pattern corrections are made within the inversion process for all tested models of the search grid, which is based on the neighbourhood algorithm strategy. Within this work we notably show with various analytical data (different apertures and fillings) that the inversion process is efficient to provide not only the properties of the thin-bed, but also its depth and the properties of the surrounding homogeneous soil. This approach was successful thanks to the introduction of the dispersion characteristics, which restrict non-uniqueness problems potentially encountered when only AVO curves are used. Finally, all the methodology is successfully applied to a synthetic and to two real CMP GPR datasets, which were acquired along a vertical limestone cliff. It allowed extracting the characteristics of various subvertical fractures (filling, aperture) with satisfying resolution and confidence. The study motivates interest to combine dispersion dependency of the reflection coefficient variations with classical AVO analyses for any thin-bed characterization. The inversion strategy presented here is restricted on a single reflected event embedded within a homogeneous formation. In order to develop this approach to potential other applications, when various reflected events are present and/or when properties do vary laterally (2D media), a combination of velocity model building by Full-Waveform Inversion and high resolution Reverse-Time-Migration is currently investigated.

Abstract

Recent advances in seismic inversion methods allow us to get high-resolution quantitative representations of mechanical parameters of the Earth. One of the most promising inversion method is the Full-waveform inversion (FWI) method which basically consists of an iterative data fitting process based on a local optimisation (Tarantola, 1984) and unlike conventional methods (e.g. first arrival times tomography) all the information available in the data can be handled. This method has been first applied to depth exploration (Virieux and Operto, 2009), but some authors already applied it to quantitatively image the near-surface. For example, G'elis (2005) succeeded to image cavities using synthetic data including surface waves arrivals. However one of the most important remaining challenges is the validation of the method with real field data that presents many difficulties: field data are often measured on not well-known media composed of high heterogeneity degree, important intrinsic attenuation and with prominent three dimensional effects. Considering all these difficulties, the necessity to have an experimental intermediate validation step becomes obvious. The aim is to reproduce the field experiments in a well-controlled environment at a smaller scale using a well-defined spacio-temporal scalling. The physical reduced scale modeling has several advantages compared to field-measurements: first the model physical parameters are well controlled, thus numerically repeatable; secondly, the great flexibility of the setup enables to experiment easily novel measurement configurations. This validation approach has already been first applied for geophysical imaging purposes by French (1974). Recently Bretaudeau (2010) designed an ultrasonic measurement bench called MUSC with several features that enable an excellent reproducibility of field measurements from the surface. For instance, a special attention has been paid to select a source that can be assimilated to a point source and the sensors displacements are controlled with an accuracy of 10 m. Using this experimental setup, Bretaudeau (2010) showed promising results on the inversion using the vertical component. Due to recent technological improvements (Blum et al., 2010), it is now possible to record the vertical and the horizontal components simultaneously using a new laser interferometer device which has been implemented in the MUSC measurement bench. In this context, the aim of the study presented here is to investigate numerically the benefits of the each component in the frame of the FWI method and to present the recent advances on measurements of both components on reduced physical scale models. First, the physical reduced scale model and its numerical representation will be described, then a numerical study will present the benefits provided by each component for velocities reconstructions and finally measurements of the vertical and horizontal components on the reduced physical scale model will be presented and compared to numerical simulations.

Abstract

International audience; The validity of isotropic approximation to perform acoustic full waveform inversion (FWI) of real wide-aperture anisotropic data can be questioned due to the intrinsic kinematic inconsistency between short- and large-aperture components of the data. This inconsistency is mainly related to the differences between the vertical and horizontal velocities in vertical-transverse isotropic (VTI) media. The footprint of VTI anisotropy on 2-D acoustic isotropic FWI is illustrated on a hydrophone data set of an ocean-bottom cable that was collected over the Valhall field in the North Sea. Multiscale FWI is implemented in the frequency domain by hierarchical inversions of increasing frequencies and decreasing aperture angles. The FWI models are appraised by local comparison with well information, seismic modelling, reverse-time migration (RTM) and source-wavelet estimation. A smooth initial VTI model parameterized by the vertical velocity V0 and the Thomsen parameters δ and ε were previously developed by anisotropic reflection traveltime tomography. The normal moveout (inline image) and horizontal (inline image) velocity models were inferred from the anisotropic models to perform isotropic FWI. The VNMO models allows for an accurate match of short-spread reflection traveltimes, whereas the Vh model, after updating by first-arrival traveltime tomography (FATT), allows for an accurate match of first-arrival traveltimes. Ray tracing in the velocity models shows that the first 1.5 km of the medium are sampled by both diving waves and reflections, whereas the deeper structure at the reservoir level is mainly controlled by short-spread reflections. Starting from the initial anisotropic model and keeping fixed δ and ε models, anisotropic FWI allows us to build a vertical velocity model that matches reasonably well the well-log velocities. Isotropic FWI is performed using either the NMO model or the FATT model as initial model. In both cases, horizontal velocities are mainly reconstructed in the first 1.5 km of the medium. This suggests that the wide-aperture components of the data have a dominant control on the velocity estimation at these depths. These high velocities in the upper structure lead to low values of velocity in the underlying gas layers (either equal or lower than vertical velocities of the well log), and/or a vertical stretching of the structure at the reservoir level below the gas. This bias in the gas velocities and the mispositioning in depth of the deep reflectors, also shown in the RTM images, are required to match the deep reflections in the isotropic approximation and highlight the footprint of anisotropy in the isotropic FWI of long-offset data. Despite the significant differences between the anisotropic and isotropic FWI models, each of these models produce a nearly-equivalent match of the data, which highlights the ill-posedness of acoustic anisotropic FWI. Hence, we conclude with the importance of considering anisotropy in FWI of wide-aperture data to avoid bias in the velocity reconstructions and mispositioning in depth of reflectors. Designing a suitable parameterization of the VTI acoustic FWI is a central issue to manage the ill-posedness of the FWI.
