Abstract

International audience; During the last decades, a large number of fires occurred in Portugal due to its large forest area exacerbated by high fire weather index and due to the plantation of fire prone species such as eucalyptus. A large number of studies show that fires lead to accelerated soil erosion and land degradation. Additionally, heavy ploughing was shown to exacerbate erosion in post fire forest areas. We studied the fire of 2011 to calibrate the erosion model LANDSOIL to evaluate the impact of fires in Maciera, part of the Caramulo region in NW Portugal. For that, land use maps from 2000 to nowadays were classified, the DEM was improved with the inclusion of terraces and about 40 extreme rainfall events were selected to feed the model. Once the model was calibrated, we simulated the impact of the 2011 fire on soil erosion and repeat the same method for 2 previous fires. Finally, we created future land use maps based on narrative scenarios that were developed from socio-economic surveys sent to local researchers. Four types of scenarios were applied: business-as-usual, land productivity, environmental protection and sustainable trade-off scenarios. The impact of different land managements and land uses was then assessed on soil erosion.

Abstract

International audience; Vineyards of southern France are important environments for the quality of agricultural production and for the peculiarity of their landscapes. In a changing world, where these environments are experiencing new challenges, land use (LU) and climate change play a central role in hydrological and soil erosion processes. The study area is a 91ha hilly catchment (Roujan), located in the Occitanie region around 25 kilometres from the southern coast, with an average elevation of 102 meters a.s.l.; in the present land coverage configuration, it contains 62% vineyard land cover. Effect of land use and climate changes were modelled by comparing 2050 to present conditions using LandSoil, a model simulating water and tillage sediment redistribution on fine spatial (1-10 metres) and temporal (rainfall event) scales. We tested the climatic impact, simulating on medium terms with: 1) a 20 years climatic historical series (1992-2012) and, 2) a future climatic scenario (2040-2060), as the result of RCM (ALADIN53) on a RCP4.5 CO2 emission configuration. Land use change is accounted for in considering land cover and soil-water conservations techniques evolutions through four different scenarios developed from socio-economic surveys such as: 1) Business-as-usual, following the last decade's LU trend changes (i.e., decreasing of vineyards surface abandoning and or grouping small fields); 2) Productivist (i.e., introducing grape varieties with high productivity, adopting vineyard irrigation, as well as accepting the use of fungicides and pesticides and reducing the grass strips percentage); 3) Environmental protection (i.e., prohibiting pesticides to protect ground waters, creating additional vegetative strips to decrease the erosion and to increase the local biodiversity); 4) Sustainable (i.e., adapting the productivity to local demand and valorising small quality productions with a balanced land-use pattern and architecture). Results show that even in a monitored catchment, where the landscape architecture is preserved from soil loss, interesting differences are observed when land use changes dramatically, as in the proposed LU scenarios, pushing the soil loss balance to very different equilibrium conditions.

Abstract

International audience; Muddy floods, i.e. water flowing from agricultural fields and carrying large quantities of soil, affect routinely numerous municipalities of central Belgium, northern France and southern England. A comparison of flood frequency between different European regions is difficult, because of the lack of a uniform and official database as well as the landscape heterogeneity of administrative entities. AgriEnvironmental Measures (AEMs; e.g. grass buffer strips) can contribute to the control of muddy floods but their installation is voluntary and depends therefore on farmers’ willingness. Actions to increase awareness and to inform the farmers proved to increase drastically their participation rate in AEM programmes. In all the studied regions, flood prone areas are increasingly taken into account to define land approved for development. Moreover, several schemes for the control of muddy floods have also been proposed at the regional scale. However, there is a spatial mismatch between the scale at which muddy floods are triggered (small catchment scale) and the scale at which public authorities can operate (municipality, grouping of municipalities, delineated flood prone areas, river basin). In future, beside curative measures (e.g. retention ponds and dams), farming techniques preventing runoff and erosion in the field (e.g. conservation tillage) should be encouraged. This could be achieved by the creation of a new AEM. Moreover, guidelines for the location of AEMs could usefully be introduced. Existing flood control schemes should also be systematically carried out by catchment agencies including legal, environmental and financial expertise. These agencies should be set up for local groupings of municipalities and provide them technical assistance to equip the flood prone areas and carry out maintenance of the implemented control measures.

Abstract

Landscape evolution in agricultural contexts is primarily the result of soil redistribution processes done by human activity and water erosion. The analysis of such soil dynamics in archaeological areas is useful to understand the evolution of the landscape structures. This study is focused on the area of Aksum (Ethiopia), one of the most relevant archaeological sites in East Africa, where the flourishing and decay of the Aksumite Kingdom (400yBC, 800yAD) took place. It provided favorable conditions for long term approach to the study of soil conservation techniques since they have been maintained from ancient times to present. In the present study, three terrace systems have been surveyed and analysed in terms of soil loss across the last two millennia by physical and archaeological evidences. Tillage and water erosion has been simulated by a long-term expert-system model (LandSoil) (Ciampalini et al., 2011) based on a raster distributed-approach accounting the principal components in soil erosion-deposition processes. The results of model analysis, integrating tillage erosion, diffusive and concentrated erosion have been compared and calibrated with the plough marks technique (Ciampalini et al., 2008; 2011), soil loss computing procedures such as the PSIAC model for Ethiopian Highlands (Negussie et al., 2005) and a reparameterisation of P factor (USLE) for stone-bounds (Desta et al., 2005). This analysis provides values for tillage soil displacement and water erosion comparable with these reported in the literature, accounts for the relative influence of both mechanical and hydrological processes, and confirms the high efficiency of these traditional soil conservation practices.

International audience; Modelling is an appropriate methodology for understanding space-time evolution in soil and landscape processes. Such modelling presumes the ability to produce quantitative models of soil redistribution in the landscape to test the effects of different scenarios of land management and climate evolution. The LandSoil model (Landscape design for Soil conservation under soil use and climate change) is designed for the analysis of agricultural landscape evolution at a fine spatial resolution scale [1-10 meters] and a mid-term temporal scale [10-100 years]. Based on the Stream model, LandSoil is suitable for simulations from parcel to catchment scale. It is spatially distributed, event-based, and considers water and tillage erosion processes. Specificity of the model is the use of a dynamic representation of the agricultural landscape through parameters such as a monthly representation of soil surface properties, hydrologic pathways and accounting a climate component based directly on rainfall events. We present the characteristics of the model, sensitivity analysis to the main erosion processes parameters and its application to a scenario study on a Mediterranean site. Sensitivity analysis shows the importance both of soil surface properties and flow connectivity on catchment soil redistribution, allowing make decisions and planning soil and water conservation strategies. Catchment scale simulations on a degraded scenario, maximising the hydraulic conductivity whit the removal of all the grass bands between fields, indicate a global increase of the soil erosion rate (+29%), with spatial variability depending on the specific soil use type and a significant loss of trapping efficiency at field borders (-81%).

Abstract

Many studies developed soil erosion risk modeling methodologies at various scales from regional to Continental scale. The MESOEROS project is the first which aims to understand the soil loss risk on the whole Mediterranean basin for the current climate context and also for the predicting climate changes expected for the 21st century. Two models are used: MESALES (expert rules model) and PESERA (physical based model). Model inputs come from homogenized regional datasets that cover the whole study area. After being calibrated with watersheds data and the PESERA modeling on Europe, the two modeling results are analyzed as well as the model sensitivity to the different input parameters. The modeling validation allow understanding the integration of climate change on modeling results. MESALES and PESERA point out an evolution of the soil erosion risk between the 20th and the 21st centuries around the Mediterranean basin. The two models assess a global augmentation of the soil loss risk at the Mediterranean scale. They both show an increase – in intensity and surface - of the soil erosion risk on areas already sensitive during the 20th century.

Abstract

Water erosion is a major threat to soil sustainability. In the context of global change, erosion intensity could be dramatically increased, hence decreasing the capability of soils to sustain agriculture. We evaluated soil sustainability to water erosion in two watersheds (about 100 km2 each) located in Southern France and Northern Tunisia. Erosion both at present time and in the future (about 100 years) was assessed using the STREAM model. The ARPEGE model was used to simulate climate change scenarios and the CLUE model for land-use change scenarios. Results show that land-use change is the main factor controlling soil sustainability, which means that soil sustainability can be dramatically affected by decisions about watershed management. Results also show a large spatial variability of soil sustainability inside the watersheds, with small areas of low sustainability. As a consequence, targeted decisions should be more efficient than general policies. Usually, soil sustainability to water erosion is gauged through erosion rates (T/ha/y) or changes in soil thickness (mm/y). However, because life expectancy is a familiar concept, it can be understood easily by non-specialists, such as decision-makers. Life expectancy of soils thus appears to be a valuable indicator of soil sustainability.

International audience; Soil degradation and erosion will be influenced during the 21st century both by climate and related or anthropogenic land use changes. Many current negative impacts of soil erosion may thus be amplified, and as certain soil thresholds are exceeded, potentially new and different problems could arise. Soils in the Mediterranean environment may be particularly vulnerable to such global changes because of contrasted climate, low vegetation cover and specific poor soil characteristics. It is therefore crucial to understand the potential impacts of global change on soils erosion and its consequences on soil functions such as support of vegetation, local water balance, loss of organic matter (on-site impacts) as well as on sediment transfer in surface water reservoirs (off-site impact). The objective of the work presented here was to improve our understanding of the impact of global change, as it can be predicted by currently used global change scenarios for the period until 2100, on soil resources and to develop indicators and models for soil vulnerability assessment within the Mediterranean basin. Specific drivers of soil erosion affected by the global change were identified and their impacts on erosion processes were quantified using erosion models at small and medium catchments scales. Soil vulnerability indicators were developed from the use of these models for the assessment of soil depth reduction and the siltation of reservoirs. The project also developed uncertainty analysis and validation of erosion prediction using results of field investigations in three test areas in France, Tunisia and Morocco.

Global warming and the land use changes expected during the 21st century are going to influence the soils deterioration and the erosion processes. In order to protect the soil resource under the current bioclimatic context and prevent the future consequences, it is essential to apprehend the erosion risk. Many studies developed the soil erosion risk modelling at various scales from regional to european scale. The MESOEROS project is the first which aims to understand the soil loss risk on the whole Mediterranean basin for the current climate context and also for the predicting climate changes expected for the 21st century. Two models are used: MESALES (expert rules model) and PESERA (physical based model). Both provide the soil erosion risk into five classes. Model inputs, soils properties (crusting and erodibility), climate data, DEM and land use data, come from the most recent and validated datasets, homogenised on the whole study area. After being calibrated with watersheds data and the PESERA modelling on Europe, the two modelling results are analysed. Both MESALES and PESERA present an erosion risk contrast around the Mediterranean basin. MESALES estimates Italia, Andalusia, Catalan and Aragon regions, western part of Greece and Balkan region as threatened areas while PESERA models the arable region of Castellan y Leon, Near East and the high atlas range in Morocco as subjected to an erosion risk. The two methods model parts of northern Morocco, centre and European part of Turkey, Lebanon and northern Portugal at risk while southern France, Libyan coasts and southern Greece are never threatened. Analyses of the parameter influences on the models and the modelling validation allow understanding the integration of climate change on modelling results. MESALES and PESERA point out an evolution of the soil erosion risk between the 20th and the 21st centuries around the Mediterranean basin. Abstract

International audience; Because erodibility quantifies the easiness of the soil to be eroded, erodibility is a key concept to predict soil erosion. Nevertheless, erodibility does not have a unique description (Bryan, 2000). In this paper, we review recent developments in the assessment of erodibility for interrill areas using structural stability. Based on this, future research directions are underlined. Structural stability as measured by Le Bissonnais (1996) is a convenient method to assess soil erodibility: it is fast, reproducible and low-cost. It assesses the sensitivity of soil aggregates to three basic disaggregation mechanisms (slaking, differential swelling and mechanical breakdown). Le Bissonnais et al. (2007) showed a high correlation (90%) between structural stability and soil loss for Mediterranean vineyards. It confirms structural stability as a good estimator of soil erodibility. Moreover, Leguédois & Le Bissonnais (2004) and Legout et al. (2005) showed that aggregate size distributions of structural stability tests matched the size distributions of eroded aggregates under rainfall simulations. It means stability tests could be used not only to estimate the erodibility but also the size fractions that are available to erosion processes. We propose a pedotransfer function predicting structural stability, based on a database including structural stability and results of usual soil analyses (texture, carbon content, etc.) for French soils. This allows for an assessment of soil erodibility based on soil properties. Annabi (2005) and Cosentino et al. (2006) showed that structural stability of a given soil could vary within a year, but the factors controlling such changes remain to be specified. Darboux & Le Bissonnais (2007) showed that surface crusts did not have the same stability than the plough layer. From these recent works, erodibility in interrill areas appears as a dynamic parameter. There is no unique value of erodibility but a range of values depending on the crusting stage, the climate and the biological activity. Future research effort should look at the causes of short-term changes of structural stability. This will lead to a better prediction of interrill erodibility.

Abstract

Erosion and sediment transport processes depend on the soil surface properties. Because of water flow and other processes (climate, agricultural practices, biological activity, etc.), the properties of the soil surface can undergo significant changes that affect erosion. As a consequence, understanding of the transport processes and improvement in soil erosion prediction involve a better assessment of soil surface characteristics. Structural stability has been used to evaluate the sensitivity of soils to erosion. This methodology reproduces the processes responsible for particle and fragment production, the initial step leading to erosion. Structural stability measurements are usually carried out on soil materials sampled inside the plough layer. Since the material at the soil surface, i.e. the soil interacting with the overland flow, is usually discarded at sampling, structural stability measurements do not assess the properties of the most relevant material. The goal of this study was to evaluate the range of structural stability for a given soil placed under different conditions. First, soil aggregates were placed under a laboratory rainfall simulator to produce a coherent layer and a sediment layer (two ubiquitous states of the soil surface). Second, the samples were sprayed with deionised water or nutrients (to stimulate biological activity) and incubated in a climatic chamber. A set of structural stability measurements was done over a 20-days period. Results show the material at the soil surface can have a sensitivity to erosion very different from the initial material. This is due to particle rearrangement at the soil surface and biological activity. An alternative methodology to evaluate soil sensitivity to erosion is proposed.

Abstract

International audience; The early stages of hydric erosion have been studied in several agricultural and experimental situations on calcic luvisol in the French mediterranean vineyard. Eight landuse practices were compared and submitted to simulated rainfalls of 60 mm/h (10 plots in all with 3 rainfalls/plot) : scrubland, fallow and six modes of vine growing including chemical and mechanical weeding of the inter-rows, grass covering, straw mulching, stone mulching and stone removal. The study revealed that scrubland was sensitive to runoff. We observed the higher runoff rates and soil losses under chemically weeded vineyards, and a fast protective effect against runoff and erosion in straw and stone mulched vineyards. The control of grass covering appeared to be more complex, but was promising for the sustainability of the agrosystem. Finally, we identified two indicators of soil erosion sensitivity : the soil cover which reduced significantly soil surface crusting and runoff and the soil aggregate stability, which was strongly related to SOC rate, and reduced the soil surface sealing and the surface water turbidity

Anthropogenic activity associated with intensive agricultural production is often the origin of an acceleration in soil erosion processes, such that the rate of erosion will exceed the rate of soil formation. In Europe and the world, water erosion af- fects all types of landscapes to different degrees. Water erosion models may provide helpful information for the development and application of land management practices in catchments with soil and water conservation concerns. The objective of this work was to reflect on and then critically analyse the problem of water erosion modelling from different points of view: conceptually, model exploration and model parameter- isation. From this reflection, and after a literature review, which focused on two of the main problems identified with present-day erosion models, namely model parame- terisation and sedimentological connectivity, we have developed a physically based and distributed water erosion model, able to provide dynamic information about soil loss and sediment transport within small agricultural catchments during rainfall events. The model takes into account the effects of land management practices on sediment transport using a distributed GIS parameterisation. The model was calibrated and validated for a Mediterranean catchment, using an automatic and multi-scale calibra- tion procedure. Another result from this work was the development of a sensitivity analysis framework to provide an exploratory analysis of distributed erosion models at different space and time scales. This framework has been applied to four water erosion models (MHYDAS-Erosion, STREAM, MESALES and PESERA). Results have shown a similarity in behaviour of the four erosion models with regards to input parameter variations.; La pression anthropique liée à l’agriculture intensive est souvent `a l’origine d’une accélération des processus érosifs, avec des taux d’ablation souvent supérieurs aux vitesses de formation des sols. En Europe et dans le monde, l’érosion hydrique affecte quasi- ment toutes les zones géographiques, `a des degrés divers. La modélisation de l’érosion hydrique peut fournir des informations utiles pour la mise en oeuvre de mesures anti- érosives sur les bassins versants agricoles afin de conserver les ressources en sol et diminuer le transport de sédiments vers les cours d’eau. L’objectif général de cette thèse a été de mener une réexion et une analyse critique sur la problématique de la modélisation de l’érosion hydrique, avec différents angles d’attaque : conceptuel, exploration de modèle et paramétrisation. Nous avons effectué dans un premier temps une analyse bibliographique sur deux des questions qui semblent les plus problématiques dans les modèles d’érosion actuels : la première sur la paramétrisation de l’érosion diffuse et la seconde sur le fonctionnement des éléments d’interfaces du paysage comme les ban- des enherbées. Nous avons ensuite développé un modèle d’érosion hydrique distribué et `a base physique applicable aux échelles du bassin versant et de l’événement plu- vieux. Cette modélisation permet de prendre en considération les éléments d’interface du paysage tout en s’appuyant sur une paramétrisation distribuée facilitée par le re- cours aux systèmes d’information géographique (SIG). Le modèle développé a été calé et validé sur un bassin versant Méditerranéen, en utilisant une procédure de calage multi-échelles. Un autre résultat de ce travail a été le développement d’un cadre général pour l’analyse de sensibilité des modèles d’érosion aux paramètres d’entrée et à leur distribution spatiale, et ceci pour des modèles distribués conçus pour différentes échelles d’espace et de temps. Cette procédure d’analyse a été appliquée à quatre modèles d’érosion (MHYDAS-Erosion, STREAM, MESALES et PESERA). Les résultats montrent des similitudes de comportement pour les différents modèles testés par rapport aux paramètres d’entrée.
