Abstract

International audience; The present study focused on the characterization of a multi-contaminated former industrial site, followed by an investigation into the suitability of a possible phytoremediation technique. This study area located in Issoudun (France) was contaminated with high concentrations of trace elements such as copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and arsenic (As). The site was divided into 18 blocks, and soil samples (46 samples taken from the 18 blocks) were analyzed for pH, total organic matter (TOC), electrical conductivity (EC), total concentrations in Cu, Pb, Zn and As and granulometry. In a mesocosm experiment soil pore waters (SPWs) were collected from potted soil using rhizon samplers, at both the beginning (T0) and the end of the experiment (TF), with pH, EC and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) being determined directly from the SPW solutions. Cu, Pb, Zn and As concentrations in SPW as well as aboveground and belowground organs of Phaseolus vulgaris were also analyzed. The two main results are shown in this study. Firstly, the physico-chemical properties of the soil revealed the heterogeneity of the area, in particular for blocks 1, 2, 17 and 18. Secondly, the mesocosm phytotoxicity test using Phaseolus vulgaris showed that metal(loid)s plant accumulation depended not only on the soil metal(loid) concentrations, but also on soil pH and sand content. Moreover, Phaseolus vulgaris plants presented a homogeneous growth indicating that the area was able to sustain plant growth. These results revealed that a phytoremediation technique could be applied in this contaminated site.

Abstract

International audience; Metal(loid)s found at many sites as a result of human activities induce contamination of ecosystems, which threatens the environment and public health. Several approaches can be used in order to reduce such negative impacts of pollutants, and among them, phytoremediation has gained attractive attention. The objective of the present study was to assess the capacity of Populus euramericana, Dorskamp cultivar, for the phytoremediation of metal(loid)s on a technosol (former mining site) highly contaminated mainly with Pb and As, and amended with biochars having different particle sizes. In a 46-day mesocosm glasshouse pot experiment, technosol was mixed at three ratios (0, 2, or 5% w/w) with four different hardwood-derived biochars (with various particle sizes) in order to study the biochar application rate and particle size effects on soil pore water (SPW) characteristics, on poplar growth, and on metal(loid) distribution and concentrations in the plant organs. The results showed that all biochars tested had a significant impact on several SPW physico-chemical parameters. Especially, biochar additions reduced available Pb concentrations but with no effect on As. In such conditions, Populus growth in amended technosol increased whatever rate and particle size of biochar used. Metal(loid) concentrations and repartition in plant organs showed the following: (1) for Pb, a higher root concentration with low aerial part translocation, which depended on biochar used, and (2) for As, mainly a root sequestration. We identified biochar with the finest particle size and combined with P. euramericana, Dorskamp, was the most suitable as remediation tools for Pb stabilization in post-mining contaminated soils.

Abstract

International audience; Copper-contaminated soils were managed with aided phytoextraction in 31 field plots at a former woodpreservation site, using a single incorporation of compost (OM) and dolomitic limestone (DL) followed bya crop rotation with tobacco and sunflower. Six amended plots, with increasing total soil Cu, and oneunamended plot were selected together with a control uncontaminated plot. The mobility and phytoavailabilityof Cu, Zn, Cr and As were investigated after 2 and 3 years in soil samples collected in theseeight plots. Total Cu, Zn, Cr and As concentrations were determined in the soil pore water (SPW) andavailable soil Cu and Zn fractions by DGT. The Cu, Zn, Cr and As phytoavailability was characterized bygrowing dwarf beans on potted soils and determining the biomass of their plant parts and their foliarionome.Total Cu concentrations in the SPW increased with total soil Cu. Total Cu, Zn, Cr and As concentrationsin the SPW decreased in year 3 as compared to year 2, likely due to annual shoot removals by the plantsand the lixiviation. Available soil Cu and Zn fractions also declined in year 3. The Cu, Zn, Cr and Asphytoavailability, assessed by their concentration and mineral mass in the primary leaves of beans, wasreduced in year 3.

International audience; PurposeAnthropic activities induce severe metal(loid)s contamination of many sites, which is a threat to the environment and to public health. Indeed metal(loid)s cannot be degraded, and thus accumulate in soils. Furthermore, they can contaminate surrounding ecosystems through run-off or wind erosion. This study aims to evaluate the phytostabilization capacity of Salix viminalis to remediate As and Pb highly contaminated mine site, in a biochar-assisted phytoremediation context and to assess biochar particle size and dose application effects.Materials and methodsTo achieve this, mesocosm experiments were conducted using the contaminated technosol and four different size fraction of one biochar as amendment, at two application rates (2 and 5%). Non-rooted cuttings of Salix viminalis were planted in the different mixtures. In order to characterize the mixtures, soil pore waters were sampled at the beginning and at the end of the experiment and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, and metal(loid) concentrations. After 46 days of Salix growth, roots, stems, and leaves were harvested and weighed, and As and Pb concentrations and distributions were measured.Results and discussionSoil fertility improved (acidity decrease, electrical conductivity increase) following biochar addition, whatever the particle size, and the Pb concentration in soil pore water decreased. Salix viminalis did not grow on the non-amended contaminated soil while the biochar amendment permitted its growth, with a better growth with the finest biochars. The metal(loid)s accumulated preferentially in roots.ConclusionsFine biochar particles allowed S. viminalis growth on the contaminated soil, allowing this species to be used for technosol phytostabilization.

Abstract

International audience; Biochar is a potential candidate for the remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soils. However, the mechanisms of contaminant-biochar retention and release depend on the amount of soil contaminants and physicochemical characteristics, as well as the durability of the biochar contaminant complex, which may be related to the pyrolysis process parameters. The objective of the present study was to evaluate, in a former contaminated smelting site, the impact of two doses of wood biochar (2 and 5% w/w) on metal immobilization and/or phytoavailability and their effectiveness in promoting plant growth in mesocosm experiments. Different soil mixtures were investigated. The main physicochemical parameters and the Cd, Pb, and Zn contents were determined in soil and in soil pore water. Additionally, the growth, dry weight, and metal concentrations were analyzed in the different dwarf bean plant (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) organs tested. Results showed that the addition of biochar at two doses (2 and 5%) improved soil conditions by increasing soil pH, electrical conductivity, and water holding capacity. Furthermore, the application of biochar (5%) to metal-contaminated soil reduced Cd, Pb, and Zn mobility and availability, and hence their accumulation in the different P. vulgaris L. organs. In conclusion, the data clearly demonstrated that biochar application can be effectively used for Cd, Pb, and Zn immobilization, thereby reducing their bioavailability and phytotoxicity.

Abstract

International audience; Reclaiming degraded and contaminated soils with biochar amendments has become increasingly popular. Biochar, a fine-grained and porous biocarbon produced by the slow pyrolysis of biomass under oxygen limited conditions is foreseen as a possible solution to reduce metal(loid)s availability and phytotoxicity and simultaneously to improve the soil quality. Mining activities are one of the main concern generating potentially toxic elements (PTE) such as metal(loid)s-rich wastes and technosols. The effects of biochar addition (2% and 5%) on a former mine technosol characterized by high levels of PTE were investigated in laboratory during short-term experiments where technosols were potted and cultivated with dwarf beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) as indicator plants. Soil and soil pore water (SPW) physico-chemical properties were determined together with total dissolved concentrations of As, Sb and Pb in SPW sampled by Rhizons and available concentrations as measured by DGT (Diffusive Gradients in Thin-Films). Additionally indicator plant biomass and PTE concentrations in their organs (roots, stem and leaves) were determined. The results of the present study indicate that addition of 2 and 5% biochar to contaminated technosols increased soil and SPW pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and soil water content (SWC), decreased the labile concentration of Pb while increasing the As and Sb solubility. Indicator plants cultivated on biochar amended mine technosols showed a smaller biomass and higher PTE concentration levels in the various organs.
