Abstract

International audience; The low-lying level structure of V59 and V61 was investigated for the first time. The neutron knockout reaction and inelastic proton scattering were applied for V61 while the neutron knock-out reaction provided the data for V59. Four and five new transitions were determined for V59 and V61, respectively. Based on the comparison to our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja (LNPS) interaction, three of the observed γ rays for each isotope could be placed in the level scheme and assigned to the decay of the first 11/2− and 9/2− levels. The (p,p′) excitation cross sections for V61 were analyzed by the coupled-channels formalism assuming quadrupole plus hexadecapole deformations. Due to the role of the hexadecapole deformation, V61 could not be unambiguously placed on the island of inversion.

Abstract

International audience; We report on γ-ray spectroscopy of low-lying excited states in the neutron-rich Kr94,95,96 isotopes measured as part of the “Shell Evolution And Search for Two-plus energies At RIBF” (SEASTAR) campaign at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Excited yrast and non-yrast states were observed, and half-lives extracted via geant4 simulations. In Kr94,96 candidates for the 31− state were identified. For Kr95, the prompt SEASTAR data were combined with delayed spectroscopic data measured with the EURICA array to observe transitions on top of the known (7/2)+ isomer at a level energy of 195.5(3) keV. The comparison of the new experimental results with five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) and mapped interacting boson model (IBM) calculations, both using the Gogny D1M interaction, could suggest oblate-prolate shape coexistence already in Kr96.

Abstract

International audience; The low-lying level structure of 63V was studied for the first time by the inelastic proton scattering and the proton knock-out reaction in inverse kinematics. The comparison of the newly observed γ-ray transitions at 696(8) keV and 889(16) keV with our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja interaction established two excited states proposed to be the first 11/2− and 9/2− levels. The (p,p′) excitation cross sections were analyzed by the coupled channel formalism assuming pure quadrupole as well as quadrupole+hexadecapole deformations. This resulted in large deformation parameters placing 63V in the island of inversion located below 68Ni.

Abstract

International audience; A first γ-ray study of Cl47,49 spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with Ar50 projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt deexcitation γ rays were measured with the NaI(Tl) array DALI2+. Through the one-proton knockout reaction Ar50(p,2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of Cl49 from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity Jπ=3/2+ is deduced for the ground state of Cl49, similar to the recently studied N=32 isotope K51. The evolution of the energy difference E(1/21+)−E(3/21+) is compared to state-of-the-art theoretical predictions.

Abstract

International audience; We report on the first γ -ray spectroscopy of 51,53 K produced via the 52,54 Ca( p ,2 p ) reactions at ∼250 MeV/nucleon. Unambiguous final-state angular-momentum assignments were achieved for beam intensities down to few particles per second by using a new technique based on reaction vertex tracking combined with a thick liquid-hydrogen target. Through γ -ray spectroscopy and exclusive parallel momentum distribution analysis, 3/2 + ground states and 1/2 + first excited states in 51,53 K were established quantifying the natural ordering of the 1d3/2 and 2s1/2 proton-hole states that are restored at N = 32 and 34. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations and shell-model calculations with improved phenomenological effective interactions reproduce the present data and predict consistently the increase of the E (1/2 1+ ) - E (3/2 1+ ) energy differences towards N = 40.

Abstract

International audience; Here we present new information on the shape evolution of the very neutron-rich Se92,94 nuclei from an isomer-decay spectroscopy experiment at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. High-resolution germanium detectors were used to identify delayed γ rays emitted following the decay of their isomers. New transitions are reported extending the previously known level schemes. The isomeric levels are interpreted as originating from high-K quasineutron states with an oblate deformation of β∼0.25, with the high-K state in Se94 being metastable and K hindered. Following this, Se94 is the lowest-mass neutron-rich nucleus known to date with such a substantial K hindrance. Furthermore, it is the first observation of an oblate K isomer in a deformed nucleus. This opens up the possibility for a new region of K isomers at low Z and at oblate deformation, involving the same neutron orbitals as the prolate orbitals within the classic Z∼72 deformed hafnium region. From an interpretation of the level scheme guided by theoretical calculations, an oblate deformation is also suggested for the Se6094 ground-state band.

Abstract

Low-lying excited states in the $N=32$ isotope $^{50}$Ar were investigated by in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multi-nucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3$^-$ state. The level scheme built using $\gamma\gamma$ coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the $sd-pf$ model space, and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to $2^+$ states, while the previously proposed $4^+$ state could also correspond to a $2^+$ state., Comment: Accepted for Phys. Abstract

International audience; We report on new γ-ray spectroscopy results from β decays of In99 and Sn101. 30 new γ rays were observed following the β decay of In99, and inconsistencies in the literature with respect to the γ rays following the β decay of Sn101 were addressed with two confirmed cases and two new transitions. The experimental γ-ray energies, intensities, and coincidence relationships are discussed with shell model calculations, where theoretical β-decay branching ratios from the parent nuclei and γ-ray cascades of excited states from the daughter nuclei were combined to generate hypothetical βγ spectra and βγγ coincidence matrices. The most intense β-delayed γ-ray branches in both Cd99 and In101 were well reproduced with this approach, and several γ rays were assigned to new excited states based on their good agreement with shell model predictions. Abstract

Twenty-one two-proton knockout (p; 3p) cross sections from neutron-rich nuclei at ~ 250 MeV/nucleon were measured. For the first time, the angular distribution of the three emitted protons were measured in coincidence with the tracker and hydrogen target MINOS, demonstrating that the (p; 3p) kinematics is consistent with two sequential proton-proton collisions within the projectile nucleus. Ratios of (p; 3p) over (p; 2p) inclusive cross sections follow the trend of other many-proton (neutron) removal reactions, further reinforcing the sequential nature of (p; 3p) in neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

International audience; Fifty-five inclusive single nucleon-removal cross sections from medium mass neutron-rich nuclei impinging on a hydrogen target at $\sim$250 MeV=nucleon are measured at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Systematically higher cross sections are found for proton removal from nuclei with an even number of protons as compared to odd-proton number projectiles for a given neutron separation energy. Neutron removal cross sections display no even-odd splitting, contrary to nuclear cascade model predictions. Both effects are understood through simple considerations of neutron separation energies and bound state level densities originating in pairing correlations in the daughter nuclei. These conclusions are supported by comparison with semimicroscopic model predictions, highlighting the enhanced role of lowlying level densities in nucleon-removal cross sections from loosely bound nuclei

Abstract

International audience; A record number of Sn100 nuclei was detected and new isotopic species toward the proton dripline were discovered at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Decay spectroscopy was performed with the high-efficiency detector arrays WAS3ABi and EURICA. Both the half-life and the β-decay end point energy of Sn100 were measured more precisely than the literature values. The value and the uncertainty of the resulting strength for the pure 0+→1+ Gamow-Teller decay was improved to BGT=4.4-0.7+0.9. A discrimination between different model calculations was possible for the first time, and the level scheme of In100 is investigated further.

Abstract

International audience; A γ -decaying isomeric state (τ1/2 = 197$^{+19}_{−17}$ ns) has been identified in 96Cd, which is one α particle away from the last known bound N = Z nucleus, 100Sn. Comparison of the results with shell-model calculations has allowed a tentative experimental level scheme to be deduced and the isomer to be interpreted as a medium-spin negativeparity spin trap based on the coupling of isoscalar (T = 0) and isovector (T = 1) neutron-proton pairs. The data also suggest evidence for the population of a 9+ T = 1 state, which is predicted by shell-model calculations to be yrast. Such a low-lying T = 1 state, which is unknown in lighter mass even-even self-conjugate nuclei, can also be interpreted in terms of the coupling of T = 0 and T = 1 neutron-proton pairs.

Abstract

International audience; The β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich Ag123,125 isotopes is investigated at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN, and the long-predicted 1/2− β-emitting isomers in Ag123,125 are identified for the first time. With the new experimental results, the systematic trend of energy spacing between the lowest 9/2+ and 1/2− levels is extended in Ag isotopes up to N=78, providing a clear signal for the reduction of the Z=40 subshell gap in Ag towards N=82. Shell-model calculations with the state-of-the-art VMU plus M3Y spin-orbit interaction give a satisfactory description of the low-lying states in Ag123,125. The tensor force is found to play a crucial role in the evolution of the size of the Z=40 subshell gap. The observed inversion of the single-particle levels around Ag123 can be well interpreted in terms of the monopole shift of the π1g9/2 orbitals mainly caused by the increasing occupation of ν1h11/2 orbitals.

Abstract

International audience; Exclusive cross sections and momentum distributions have been measured for quasifree one-neutron knockout reactions from a Ca54 beam striking on a liquid hydrogen target at ∼200 MeV/u. A significantly larger cross section to the p3/2 state compared to the f5/2 state observed in the excitation of Ca53 provides direct evidence for the nature of the N=34 shell closure. This finding corroborates the arising of a new shell closure in neutron-rich calcium isotopes. The distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction formalism with shell model calculations using the effective GXPF1Bs interaction and ab initio calculations concur our experimental findings. Obtained transverse and parallel momentum distributions demonstrate the sensitivity of quasifree one-neutron knockout in inverse kinematics on a thick liquid hydrogen target with the reaction vertex reconstructed to final state spin-parity assignments.

Abstract

International audience; A decay spectroscopy experiment on proton-rich nuclei in the vicinity of the doubly magic Sn100 was carried out at RIKEN Nishina Center. More than 20 nuclei with 43≤Z≤50 and N≤51, produced by fragmentation reactions were investigated via analyses of β-decay, βp-decay, and subsequent γ-ray data. Owing to higher statistics, the precision on the half-lives of many of the ground states and isomers was improved. β-decay endpoint energies of 11 states in 8 nuclei were measured for the first time, and the corresponding QEC and excitation energies were generally consistent with various mass models. Many β-delayed proton emission branching ratios were measured either for the first time or with higher precision compared to literature values, and some of them differed by more than 2σ. Many of the large discrepancies were associated with nuclei with long-lived isomeric states, highlighting large systematic uncertainties involved in these measurements. Twenty-five new γ rays were observed, and ten new states are proposed with unambiguous excitation energies, spins, and parities. Most of the energies of the excited states were consistent within 300 keV or 20%, whichever was greater, compared to shell model predictions in the proton/neutron (p1/2,g9/2) model space assuming a Sr76 core. A signature of a new (1/2−) isomer in Cd97 with T1/2=0.73(7) s was found, in good agreement with shell model predictions.

Abstract

International audience; We report on new or more precise half-lives, β-decay endpoint energies, and β-delayed proton emission branching ratios of Pd91, Cd95, In97, and Sn99. The measured values are consistent with known mirror transitions in lighter Tz=−1/2 nuclei, shell-model calculations, and various mass models. In addition to the β-decaying (9/2+) ground state, circumstantial evidence for a short-lived, proton-emitting isomer with spin (1/2−) was found in In97. Based on the experimental data, a semiempirical theory on proton emission, and shell-model calculations, the proton separation energy of the In97 ground state was determined to be −0.10±0.19 MeV. The existence of the short-lived, proton-unstable (1/2−) isomer in In97 establishes Cd96 as an rp-process waiting point.

Abstract

International audience; Half-lives and energies of γ rays emitted in the decay of isomeric states of nuclei in the vicinity of the doubly magic Sn100 were measured in a decay spectroscopy experiment at Rikagaku Kenkyusho (The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research) of Japan Nishina Center. The measured half-lives, some with improved precision, are consistent with literature values. Three new results include a 55-keV E2γ ray from a new (4+) isomer with T1/2=0.23(6)μs in Rh92, a 44-keV E2γ ray from the (15+) isomer in Ag96, and T1/2(6+)=13(2) ns in Cd98. Shell-model calculations of electromagnetic transition strengths in the (p1/2,g9/2) model space agree with the experimental results. In addition, experimental isomeric ratios were compared to the theoretical predictions derived with an abrasion-ablation model and the sharp cutoff model. The results agreed within a factor of 2 for most isomers. From the nonobservation of time-delayed γ rays in Sn100, new constraints on the T1/2, γ-ray energy, and internal conversion coefficients are proposed for the hypothetical isomer in Sn100.

Abstract

International audience; The lifetime of the $2^+_1$ state of $^{212}$Po was measured in the $^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{8}$Be)$^{212}$Po transfer reaction by γ -ray spectroscopy employing the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) method. The derived absolute B(E2) value of 2.6(3)W.u. indicates a low collectivity and contradicts previous claims of α-cluster components in the structure of the $2^+_1$ state. It is demonstrated that a consistent description of the properties of the $2^+_1$−$4^+_1$−$6^+_1$−$8^+_1$ sequence in $^{212}$Po cannot be achieved in the framework of a single-j shell-model calculation, either. This puzzle is traced to the properties of the seniority-2 configurations in $^{210}$Pb and $^{210}$Po.

Abstract

γ-ray transitions between low-spin states of the neutron-rich 84,86,88Ge were measured by means of in-flight γ-ray spectroscopy at 270 MeV/u. Excited 6+1,4+1,2, and 2+1,2 states of 84,86Ge and 4+1 and 2+1,2 states of 88Ge were observed. Furthermore, a candidate for a 3+1 state of 86Ge was identified. This state plays a key role in the discussion of ground-state triaxiality of 86Ge, along with other features of its low-energy level scheme. Abstract

International audience; We report on the first γ-ray spectroscopy of low-lying states in neutron-rich $^{98,100}$Kr isotopes obtained from $^{99,101}$(p,2p) reactions at ∼220 MeV/nucleon. A reduction of the 21+ state energies beyond N=60 demonstrates a significant increase of deformation, shifted in neutron number compared to the sharper transition observed in strontium and zirconium isotopes. State-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations using the Gogny D1S interaction predict level energies in good agreement with experimental results. The identification of a low-lying (02+, 22+) state in $^{98}$Kr provides the first experimental evidence of a competing configuration at low energy in neutron-rich krypton isotopes consistent with the oblate-prolate shape coexistence picture suggested by theory.

Abstract

International audience; The structure of neutron-rich 96,98Sr nuclei was investigated by low-energy safe Coulomb excitation ofradioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility, CERN, with the MINIBALL spectrometer. A rich set oftransitional and diagonal E2 matrix elements, including those for non-yrast structures, has been extractedfrom the differential Coulomb-excitation cross sections. The results support the scenario of a shape transition atN = 60, giving rise to the coexistence of a highly deformed prolate and a spherical configuration in 98Sr, andare compared to predictions from several theoretical calculations. The experimental data suggest a significantcontribution of the triaxal degree of freedom in the ground state of both isotopes. In addition, experimentalinformation on low-lying states in 98Rb has been obtained.

Abstract

Several new isotopes, ^{96}In, ^{94}Cd, ^{92}Ag, and ^{90}Pd, have been identified at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The study of proton drip-line nuclei in the vicinity of ^{100}Sn led to the discovery of new proton emitters ^{93}Ag and ^{89}Rh with half-lives in the submicrosecond range. The systematics of the half-lives of odd-Z nuclei with T_{z}=-1/2 toward ^{99}Sn shows a stabilizing effect of the Z=50 shell closure. Production cross sections for nuclei in the vicinity of ^{100}Sn measured at different energies and target thicknesses were compared to the cross sections calculated by epax taking into account contributions of secondary reactions in the primary target.

Abstract

Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License.; International audience; Neutron-rich $^{96,98}$Sr isotopes have been investigated by safe Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility. Reduced transition probabilities and spectroscopic quadrupole moments have been extracted from the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections. These results allow, for the first time, the drawing of definite conclusions about the shape coexistence of highly deformed prolate and spherical configurations. In particular, a very small mixing between the coexisting states is observed, contrary to other mass regions where strong mixing is present. Experimental results have been compared to beyond-mean-field calculations using the Gogny D1S interaction in a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian formalism, which reproduce the shape change at N=60.

Abstract

International audience; For the first time, the γ decay of excited states has been observed in a nucleus situated in the quadrant south-east of doubly magic Sn132, a region in which experimental information so far is limited to ground-state properties. Six γ rays with energies of 50, 86, 103, 227, 357, and 602 keV were observed following the β-delayed neutron emission from Cd85133, populated in the projectile fission of a U238 beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN within the EURICA project. The new experimental information is compared to the results of a modern realistic shell-model calculation, the first one in this region very far from stability, focusing in particular on the π0g−19/2⊗ν1f7/2 particle-hole multiplet in In83132. In addition, theoretical estimates based on a scaling of the two-body matrix elements for the πh−111/2⊗νg9/2 analog multiplet in Tl127208, one major proton and one major neutron shell above, are presented.

28. A decay spectroscopy experiment was performed within the EURICA campaign at RIKEN in 2012.It aimed at the isomer and particle spectroscopy of excited states and ground states in the mass region belowthe doubly magic 100Sn. The N = Z nuclei 98In, 96Cd and 94Ag were of particular interest for the present study.Preliminary results on the neutron deficient nuclei 93Ag and 94Ag are presented. In 94Ag a more precise valuefor the half-life of the ground state’s superallowed Fermi transition was deduced. In addition the energy spectraof the mentioned decay could be reproduced through precise Geant4 simulations of the used active stopperSIMBA. This will enable us to extract Qβ values from the measured data. The decay of 93Ag is discussed basedon the observed implantation-decay correlation events

Abstract

A. Jungclaus et al. -- 6 pags., 5 figs., 2 tabs. -- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, A new high-spin isomer in the neutron-rich nucleus Cd was populated in the projectile fission of a U beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. A half-life of T=6.3(8) ms was measured for the new state which was tentatively assigned a spin/parity of (15). The experimental results are compared to shell model calculations performed using state-of-the-art realistic effective interactions and to the neighbouring nucleus Cd. In the present experiment no evidence was found for the decay of a 18 E6 spin-trap isomer, based on the complete alignment of the two-neutron and two-proton holes in the 0h and the 0g orbit, respectively, which is predicted to exist by the shell model., We thank the staff of the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator complex for providing stable beams with high intensities to the experiment.
