The article addresses the difficulties of applying a legislation in Queensland that reduces the maximum weekly hours permitted from 48 to 44 effective July 1, 1925. The other member of the Board is John McLeod, Administrative Head of Educational Research Centre of the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Educated at English and Scottish universities, McLeod obtained an Australian Ph.D., his current major research interests being in the field of learning disabilities, which he interprets to embrace mental retardation and reading failure. He is co-editor of the Australian journal "The Slow Learning Child," and has edited and co-authored two books.

The article defines a method for the numerical analysis of forest micropattern which is based on contiguity of species. A survey of the oral health of 307 aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders living in settlements in far North Queensland was conducted to assess their needs, to recommend priorities in preventive and curative programs and to establish a baseline for future review. It has been commonly believed that aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders have a lower prevalence of dental caries than other Queenslanders. This may have been true in the past, but findings show that the children now parallel their cohorts in the Queensland County Districts Survey. The situation concerning periodontal disease is equally serious, but comparative data are not available because a new method was used. However, the periodontal disease level in the 35- to 44-year-old group demonstrates the poor prospects for children should they retain their dentitions to a similar age.

Ray's criticisms of a previous paper by the author are examined and refuted. Reference is made to published evidence which supports the contention that Queensland has a relatively authoritarian culture compared with liberal Northern United States communities, and that racial issues are a salient factor in some aspects of Australian life. Examination of Ray's argument concerning the alleged low validity of the Conservatism scale shows they are not supported by the evidence he refers to, and that he has misrepresented previous studies conducted by himself. This paper reports the results of the first analytical phase of the Central Queensland project, which was based on two objectives: (a) to investigate the problems involved in the construction of an input-output table of a large-area sub-state region in Australia and to develop methods of table construction in the Australian regional context. This was intended as an exploration in regional economic analysis in an area in which no previous research was recorded. (b) to undertake an analytical study of the economy of the Central Queensland region. This region had been the subject of concern due to a relatively low growth rate and the unknown effects of the establishment of some large-scale industries on the essentially rural regional economy. The input-output model was intended to quantify the characteristics of the Central Queensland economy as it existed prior to the establishment of these large industries and to provide an analytical base for impact studies in a subsequent phase. Patients who develop a polypoidal melanoma which does not appear to invade the reticular dermis have a poor prognosis. Thirty three or 2-1% of 1607 patients treated for melanoma, in Queensland (1963-1969) had a polypoidal non-stageable melanoma. Twenty two patients were men. Four patients (12% of the thirty three) developed a second melanoma. Of the , thirty three patients, twenty one (sixteen men, five women) died from melanoma within four years of the initial treatment. One man was lost to follow-up after fourteen months. Another man died eleven years after treatment. The ten patients (four men, six women) surviving have been followed for a mean time of 113 months (86-133) and were reported free of melanoma at their last check-up. It is preferable to excise polypoidal skin lesions which look like atypical telangiectatic granulomas (pyogenic granulomas) or other unusual-looking benign pedunculated skin tumours rather than to treat by curettage so that adequate material is available for histological examination. (1) The value of the density dependent term c in the equation M = aLc relating the number of the maturing females (M) of Boophilus microplus to the number of larvae infesting cattle (L) was compared in the winter and spring of 1974 in south­eastern Queensland. On Zebu crossbred heifers the mean values of c in winter (.87) and spring (0.69) were significantly different (P < 0.05). Likewise, the values of c on Hereford heifers in winter (0.85) and in spring (0.59) were different (P < 0.01). These differences in the values of c were associated with a loss in host resistance in winter. The estimated survival of 20,000 larvae was 9.0% and 1.3% on the crossbreds and 28% and 2.8% on the Herefords in winter and spring respectively. The spring value of the Herefords was exceptionally low and may have been associated with some selection of the group for tick resistance. (2) In the winter experiment a group of crossbred bulls was compared with the heifers and the value of c(0.73) was found to be significantly lower (P < 0.05) than that on the heifers. Further observations on AIS cattle and Brahmans in both seasons showed that they behaved like the Herefords and crossbreds respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

I worked among the Aboriginal community in Rural Town, South-West Queensland, from April 1974 to December 1975. Throughout this period it was clear that the overall economic situation in the region heavily influenced the daily lives of Aboriginal people as well as the general social climate in the area. The present paper discusses past and present employment patterns among Aborigines in Rural Town and how these patterns have been shaped by economic forces outside the minority group's control. Discusses the documentation of differences in niche utilization between two cohabiting eucalypt species (Eucalyptus signata and E. umbra wp. umbra) on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. This paper examines structural conditions which generated resistance to Brisbane, Queensland's system of expressways and freeways and, in particular, distinguishes between elements restraining protest after plans were introduced in 1966-67 and the circumstances producing the strident action of the 1973-74 period when extensive parts of the system were postponed. These strikingly different responses will be seen to result from changes within Australian capitalism and its pattern of urban and regional development, where a political watershed, dating around 1970, divided the last decade of the post-war boom as a period of surprisingly little urban and social struggle, and the early 1970s, when accumulating economic and urban contradictions resulted in significant contestation within both Australia and its cities. Introduced by a joint Brisbane city council and Queensland government initiative and based on designs by an American firm of engineers, Brisbane's expressways and freeways form the core of a massive reorganization of the city's, and surrounding region's, transportation system.

The article provides an empirical sketch of the broad sweep of Australian urbanization with particular reference to Queensland. This is undertaken by means of a regional analysis, contrasting Queensland with the other Australian states, particularly with the two dominant states of New South Wales and Victoria. In the absence of any relevant theoretical work on internal regional development and under-development which could provide guidance for the analysis, the article takes two related but analytically distinct empirical approaches, one economic, the other political. The first provides a descriptive analysis of economic development and the second considers political processes emerging in Queensland which were associated with this development. A focal point to be used as a beacon for guiding this analysis is the current transformation of Australian capitalism. It is argued that there are distinctive changes occurring within Australian urbanization that result from a contemporary transformation of Australian society. It is this change to a "new dependency" that is altering the urbanization process, because mineral wealth, which is its basis, is located in two underdeveloped states, Queensland and Western Australia.

This article reports that the colonization of coastal sand-dunes by plants is a precarious process due to the nature of the dune environment. The study presented in this article examines the occurrence of fungal hyphae and mycorrhizae, at different stages of plant colonization, on three mobile sand-dunes at Cooloola, Queensland. The relationships between fungal hyphae and sand grains are described and the possible roles of the mycorrhizal hyphae in obtaining phosphorus from these sands for the pioneer plants are discussed.

(1) The seasonal pattern of above ground live biomass production of a C[sub4] Mitchell (Astrebla spp.) grassland community in subtropical, semi-arid Queensland, Australia, was studied over a 2.5 yr period. Actual evapotranspiration and the sequential uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus over continuous summer and winter growing periods were also measured. (2) There was a pronounced seasonal pattern of live biomass production, the total biomass produced over the winter growing period representing only about 7% of the peak total summer biomass production of 1960 kg ha[sup-1]. The yield production potential of the perennial grasses was severely depressed by low winter temperatures. (3) The maximum daily above-ground live biomass production rate for the perennial grass component during summer was 39kg ha[sup-1] day[sup-1], compared with a maximum value or only 1kg ha[sup-1] day[sup-1]l for the winter growing period. (4) The reduction in above-ground biomass production rate over the summer growing period was associated with a decline in the rate of nitrogen uptake. Phosphorus uptake was linear over almost the entire summer growing period. Nutrient uptake rate over the winter growing period was very low. (5) The ratio of actual evapotranspiration to precipitation for both the summer and winter growing seasons was around unity. (6) The results are compared with similar data for a major Australian C[sub3] grassland in a climatic zone identical to that or the Mitchell grassland studied. The possible rote of limiting soil nutrients and water as factors controlling the distribution and production of both grassland communities is discussed. This paper presents a stylized account and analysts of the implications of the intergovernmental tax rivalry which arises between the Queensland and Federal governments tn their efforts to tax resource rents. In particular, coal is taxed explicitly through the Federal export levy and implicitly through the Queensland railways 'excess rail freight'. A game-theoretic environment thus arises. It ts shown that if each government sets its tax rate optimally in reaction to the other government's tax policy, then less revenue is generated a t a higher deadweight cost. New cases of primary cutaneous melanoma occurring in Queensland in a recent twelve month period were ascertained from pathology records. The reported incidence rates have risen, even in a two and a half year period, from 32.7 in 1977 to 39.6 per 100,000 population in 1979-80. The main prognostic features are presented and confirm an increased proportion of thin tumours, particularly of the lentigo maligna melanoma type. To determine underlying medical and public awareness of melanoma a random sample of the total year's patients was interviewed to establish how the tumours were first noticed. This factor of awareness in an educated high-risk community may affect the observed incidence patterns of malignant melanoma and should be considered when seeking to explain the reported rising trends. This paper examines the knowledge and use of contraception, and abortion decision-making of 212 Australian women who were seeking a repeat abortion in 1980. The analysis of questionnaires from a pregnancy and family planning clinic revealed that most women were seeking their second abortion. Single women were more likely to claim a slight knowledge of contraception and irregular use of contraceptives, and to attribute pregnancy to the failure of the pill. Women in de facto or cohabitation relationships were most likely to rate the abortion decision as difficult. Of the women who returned post-abortion questionnaires, almost all felt they had made the correct decision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the development orientation concept of planning system adopted by the government of Queensland. It explores the political aspects of Queensland to determine its connection to the way city planning is approached. It mentions that the town plan for the Shire Council has no land zoned for industrial purposes in an area destined to house 100,000 people and above. Moreover, it is stated that housing developments in Queensland were designed for middle-class families.
