This paper reports on students' experiences of describing and representing variation in hypothetical data. Fifty-six students (8-9 years-old) experienced collecting and working with quantitative data for two years as part of a STEM education project. The task described here was an end-of-year survey question, with three parts about a hypothetical context for surveying students in two different Australian cities: recording the data, describing the potential variation in the data, and creating a representation of what the data might look like when only a descriptive account of the context and variables were provided. The data analysis framework utilised provides a means of determining students' readiness for further development of statistical ideas.

These proceedings contain the papers of the 11th International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2014), October 25-27, 2014, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS) and endorsed by the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSISE). The CELDA 2014 conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aimed to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. The conference included the Keynote Lecture: "Designing Learning Environments in a Digital Age: The Quest for What to Consider," by Professor Jan Elen, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, K.U. Leuven, Belgium. Statistical terms are used in everyday language and, at times, used in non-statistical ways. It is often assumed students understand statistical terms because of their common use; however, research into their understanding of specific statistical terms is scant. This report focuses on 58 Year 3 students' responses to the basic question, "What does the term 'data' mean?", and associated examples of data and data representations. The results indicate students are making progress in establishing meaning about data and their representations. Recommendations include more use of varying contexts within which students can explore data to enrich and enhance their learning about the practice of statistics.

Classifying educational forum posts is a longstanding task in the research of Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining. Though this task has been tackled by applying both traditional Machine Learning (ML) approaches (e.g., Logistics Regression and Random Forest) and up-to-date Deep Learning (DL) approaches, there lacks a systematic examination of these two types of approaches to portray their performance difference. To better guide researchers and practitioners to select a model that suits their needs the best, this study aimed to systematically compare the effectiveness of these two types of approaches for this specific task. Specifically, we selected a total of six representative models and explored their capabilities by equipping them with either extensive input features that were widely used in previous studies (traditional ML models) or the state-of-the-art pre-trained language model BERT (DL models). Through extensive experiments on two real-world datasets (one is open-sourced), we demonstrated that: (i) DL models uniformly achieved better classification results than traditional ML models and the performance difference ranges from 1.85% to 5.32% with respect to different evaluation metrics; (ii) when applying traditional ML models, different features should be explored and engineered to tackle different classification tasks; (iii) when applying DL models, it tends to be a promising approach to adapt BERT to the specific classification task by fine-tuning its model parameters. This paper explores the value of different paradigms to explain dispositions towards mathematics among primary school students from different social backgrounds. As part of a larger project designed to elicit students' thinking and attitudes towards mathematics, we seek to develop an explanatory model for the socially-differentiated outcomes in students' responses. The three paradigms--psychology, sociology and post-modernism--form the basis of the paper where the data we collected from three geographically close but socially different schools were analysed.

Government regulations require businesses to improve their processes and products/services in a green and sustainable manner. For being environmentally friendly, businesses should invest more on eco-innovation practices. Firms eco-innovate to promote eco-efficiency and sustainability. This paper evaluates the eco-innovation performance of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries with data envelopment analysis (DEA). Data were gathered from the world bank database and global innovation index report. Findings show that for most OECD countries, energy use and ecological sustainability are more important than other inputs and outputs for enhancing eco-innovation. Effective mining of data from online submission systems offers the potential to improve educational outcomes by identifying student habits and behaviours and their relationship with levels of achievement. In particular, it may assist in identifying students at risk of performing poorly, allowing for early intervention. In this paper we investigate different methods of following the development of student behaviour throughout the semester using online submission system data, and different approaches to analysing this development. We demonstrate the application of these methods to data from a junior computer science course (N=494) and discuss their usefulness in understanding the common behavioural strategies of students in this course and how these develop over time. Finally, we draw links between behaviour in weekly coding tasks and student performance in the final exam and discuss whether these methods could be applicable midway through the semester. In 2015, a new MTeach coursework unit, "Numeracy for Learners and Teachers," was introduced at Monash University. The impetuses for this unit were the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership numeracy standards for graduate teachers, and the inclusion of numeracy as a general capability in the Australian Curriculum. In this paper, we describe the content and organisation of the unit, and its delivery modes. An evaluation was conducted with students using pre- and post-unit questionnaires and interviews. A major finding was that students' confidence to incorporate numeracy into their teaching across the curriculum increased after studying the unit.

Phenomenograhy, as an approach to educational research, began appearing in publications early in the 1980s with the predominant form of data drawn from semi-structured interviews. As a qualitative approach, it is used to describe the variations in people's experiences through their own discourse and for analyzing meaning that people ascribe to their world. Critics of this approach have highlighted the need to pay closer attention to a deep examination of the phenomenon. This paper provides an overview of a doctoral study in progress, whereby a "methodological elaboration" has been developed in response to these points of critique. Given that the study sits within the early childhood education and care (ECEC) field, the authors postulate that by combining an arts-based inquiry technique with the traditional semi-structured interview technique, participants were more likely to feel at ease and therefore a greater depth of reflection on their own experiences would likely ensue. The production of the arts-based plate, as a representation of each participant's lived experience in relation to the impacts of regulation on ECEC teacher's pedagogy and practice, was used as a "spark" to commence the semi-structured interview process and equally, provide an anchor for reference points for both participant and interviewer throughout that process. We argue that this methodological elaboration allowed a deeper examination of the phenomenon.

This book contains a compilation of papers presented at the International Conference on Education and New Developments (END 2017), organized by the World Institute for Advanced Research and Science (W.I.A.R.S.). Education, in our contemporary world, is a right since we are born. Every experience has a formative effect on the constitution of the human being, in the way one thinks, feels and acts. This is, certainly, one of the reasons we have many nationalities and cultures represented, inspiring multi-disciplinary collaborative links, fomenting intellectual encounter and development. END 2017 received 581 submissions, from 55 different countries, reviewed by a double-blind process. Submissions were prepared to take form of Oral Presentations, Posters, Virtual Presentations and Workshops. The conference accepted for presentation 176 submissions (30% acceptance rate). The conference also includes a keynote presentation from an internationally distinguished researcher, Professor Lizbeth Goodman, Chair of Creative Technology Innovation and Professor of Inclusive Design for Learning at University College Dublin; Founder/Director of SMARTlab, Director of the Inclusive Design Research Centre of Ireland, Founder of The MAGIC Multimedia and Games Innovation Centre, Ireland, to whom we express our most gratitude. These proceedings contain the papers of the 13th International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2016), October 28-30, 2016, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS), co-organized by the University of Mannheim, Germany, and endorsed by the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSISE). The CELDA conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. The use of multimedia instructions for online learning has become very common particularly with the advances of the Internet technology. Consequently museums around the world utilize such information and communications technology (ICT) tools in order to provide richer learning experiences for their visitors. This paper discusses a study that investigated the relationship between multimedia instructional formats with individual cognitive learning preferences in a museum learning environment. A total of 91 school children age between 10 to 12 years old were randomly assigned into treatment groups based on their cognitive learning ratio. We employed a pre-test post-test quasi experimental design to reveal that general performance of the children exposed to the physical museum exhibits is better than the online museum environment. Although single cognitive learning preferences were evaluated, our findings suggest that analytics perform better than the wholists when exposed to the physical exhibits; whilst the result is reversed for the online exhibits environment. Verbalisers were found to be better than visualisers in the physical museum context. Yet they were found to have slight differences when compared to visualisers in an online environment. Our findings on the combined cognitive styles (CCS) show that the analytics-visualisers' mean scores were different between physical and online exhibits, compared to the other three CCS.
