Background: Wrong side surgery (WSS) has gained national attention now. These errors are as terrifying as these involve patients who have undergone surgery on the wrong body part, undergone wrong procedure, or had a procedure intended for another patient. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire survey dealing with WSS was prepared, and 300 dental professionals were randomly mailed. All responses were gathered in Excel and analyzed using software SPSS version 19. Results: In the present study, the 213 dental professionals working in dental colleges in Ahmednagar gave the feedback, 29 of them had attempted WSS. The study was carried out on in two groups. The first comprised students undergoing bachelors in dentistry and other group was with professionals completed their bachelors in dentistry. The results were highly significant in those undergoing bachelors in dentistry with more incidence of WSS. Conclusion: The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHOs) found WSSs as the 3rd highest event. The data are definitely more than that recorded in literature but due to fear clutched at the throat people do not disclose their mistakes though it happens.

Background: Wrong site surgery defines a category of rare but totally preventable complications in surgery and other invasive disciplines. Such complications could be associated with severe morbidity or even death. As such complications are entirely preventable, wrong site surgery has been declared by the World Health Organization to be a 'never event'. Material and methods: A selective search of the PubMed database using the MeSH terms 'wrong site surgery', 'wrong site procedure', 'wrong side surgery' and 'wrong side procedure' was performed. Results: The incidence of wrong site surgery has been estimated at 1 out of 112,994 procedures; however, the number of unreported cases is estimated to be higher. Although wrong site surgery occurs in all surgical specialities, the majority of cases have been recorded in orthopedic surgery. Breakdown in communication has been identified as the primary cause of wrong site surgery. Risk factors for wrong site surgery include time pressure, emergency procedures, multiple procedures on the same patient by different surgeons and obesity. Check lists have the potential to reduce or prevent the occurrence of wrong site surgery. Conclusion: The awareness that to err is human and the individual willingness to recognize and prevent errors are the prerequisites for reducing and preventing wrong site surgery. BACKGROUND: Wrong site confusions are among the most common mistakes in operations of twosome organs. PURPOSE: To examine the frequency of wrong sided confusions that could theoretically occur in various surgeries in the absence of preoperative verification. METHODS: Ten cataract surgeons, twelve orthopedic surgeons and 6 ENT surgeons participated in the study. The surgeons were asked to fill a questionnaire that included their demographic data, occupational habits and their approach to and handling of patients preoperatively. On the day of operation the surgeons were asked to recognize the side of the operation from the patient's name only. At the second stage of the study, surgeons were asked to recognize the side of the operation while standing a two meter distance from the patient's face. Surgeons' answers were compared to the actual operation side. Patients then underwent a full 'time out' procedure, which included side marking before the operation. RESULTS: Of a total of 67 ophthalmic patients, 52 orthopedic patients and 26 ENT patients the surgeons correctly identified the operated side in 111 (76.5%) by name and in 126 (87%) by looking at patients' faces. Wrong side identification correlated with the time lapsed from the last preoperative examination (p = 0.034). The number of cataract surgeries performed by the same surgeon (on the same day) also correlated to the number of wrong identifications (p = 0.001) in ophthalmology.
