Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is crucial in safeguarding against workplace hazards. However, incidents still occur due to improper PPE usage. With the rise of Industry 4.0 and increasing industrial automation, efforts aim to develop systems for real-time monitoring of PPE. We have developed a proof-of-concept of wireless-powered smart PPE that integrates commercial off-the-shelf electronics with PPE. The smart PPE consists of a power harvesting system, an Ultra-High Frequency Radio-Frequency Identification (UHF RFID) tag for tracking and data communication, and a microcontroller directly supporting capacitive sensing used to recognize the correct wearing of the PPE. A common UHF RFID reader interrogates and powers the smart PPE at the same time using the EPCglobal Class-1 Generation-2 communication protocol. The power harvester is more than 30 % efficient at -10 dBm, and the capacitive measurement shows a peak consumption of less than 100 µA at 1.8 V. Finally, the smart PPE was tested in a realistic scenario. The test was conducted by distancing the smart PPE from the reader from 1 m to 4 m in 1 m steps. The results showed that the wireless power supply and the communication data are feasible up to 4 m. The proposed smart PPE is an ultra-low-power wearable solution that easily integrates into industrial infrastructure and is easily miniaturized, ensuring a significant improvement in workplace safety by enabling real-time monitoring of correct PPE usage.

Considering the high level of heat and flame exposure firefighters encounter while performing their work activities, personal protective equipment (PPE) is of the utmost importance to enhance their safety. Phase change materials (PCMs) are known as advanced materials able to absorb high amounts of thermal energy, with the potential to increase the thermal performance of protective clothing. In this work, a PCM-vest was developed for the first time, and its thermal performance was evaluated. A three-stage approach was followed: (1) at a small scale in the laboratory, the effect of different encapsulated PCMs on a multilayer assembly performance was evaluated; (2) in the laboratory, the essential requirements of heat and flame tests were assessed; and (3) in a simulated urban fire, the thermal performance of three different PCM-vests (different textiles and designs) was studied. As the main conclusions, the PCMs significantly affected the heating rate of the multilayer assembly, particularly when a PCM with higher latent heat was used. In some cases, the heat transfer index (HTI) doubled by comparison with the sample without PCMs. As a drawback and as expected, the cooling time was increased. The PCM-vest sample ensured the requirements of the heat and flame tests. Through this study, the positive impact of using PCMs to enhance the heat protection of conventional PPE can be highlighted. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work considers Smart Personal Protective Equipment as “Intelligent Protection For The Future”. It mainly consists of electronic components that collect data about their use, the workers who wear them, and the working environment. This paper proposes a distributed solution of Smart Personal Protective Equipment for the safety monitoring of Lone Workers by adopting low-cost electronic devices. In addition to the same hazards as anyone else, Lone Workers need additional and specific systems due to the higher risk they run on a work site. To this end, the Edge-Computing paradigm can be adopted to deploy an architecture embedding wearable devices, which alerts safety managers when workers do not wear the prescribed Personal Protective Equipment and supports a fast rescue when a worker seeks help or an accidental fall is automatically detected. The proposed system is a work-in-progress which provides an architecture design to accommodate different requirements, namely the deployment difficulties at temporary and large working sites, the maintenance and connectivity recurring cost issues, the respect for the workers’ privacy, and the simplicity of use for workers and their supervisors.

Recent developments in domains of ambient intelligence (AmI), Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems (CPS), ubiquitous/pervasive computing, etc., have led to numerous attempts to apply ICT solutions in the occupational safety and health (OSH) area. A literature review reveals a wide range of examples of smart materials, smart personal protective equipment and other AmI applications that have been developed to improve workers’ safety and health. Because the use of these solutions modifies work methods, increases complexity of production processes and introduces high dynamism into thus created smart working environments (SWE), a new conceptual framework for dynamic OSH management in SWE is called for. A proposed framework is based on a new paradigm of OSH risk management consisting of real-time risk assessment and the capacity to monitor the risk level of each worker individually. A rationale for context-based reasoning in SWE and a respective model of the SWE-dedicated CPS are also proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
