This study examines the differences related to microphysical properties of ice in thunderstorms over the Amazon and Congo Basin using the Precipitation Feature (PF) data sets derived from passive microwave and radar observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission and Global Precipitation Mission Core Satellites. Analysis reveals that Amazon thunderstorms are likely composed of ice crystals smaller but more numerous than those in the Congo Basin, resulting in half as many flashes per PF on average in the Amazon, for similar Ice Water Content (IWC) or Area of 30 dBZ at −10°C (Acharge). The increase of the flash count following an increase of the IWC (Acharge) is only 72% (61%) as effective in the Amazon as it would be in the Congo Basin area. PFs with similar 30 dBZ radar echo top heights exhibit lower Brightness Temperatures (TBs) in the 85/89, 165, and 183 GHz frequencies over the Amazon, indicating more numerous smaller ice particles compared to those over the Congo Basin, which tend to show colder TBs at 37 GHz, possibly due to more numerous large graupel or hail particles. Comparisons of TBs in PFs with similar 30 dBZ echo top temperature between the Amazon and 3 × 3º global grids show that the median TB in Amazon is higher than that in most oceanic areas but is comparable to areas having high oceanic lightning activity (e.g., South Pacific Convergence Zone). It suggests that systems in the Amazon have similarities with maritime precipitation systems, yet with distinct characteristics indicative of land systems. The radar reflectivity being driven by number and size (to the sixth power) of hydrometeors, the hypothesis is that for two storms with a same reflectivity value, one in AM and one in CB, the reflectivity value measured is driven by a higher concentration of large ice particles in CB (i.e., driven by size), while it is driven by a higher concentration of smaller ice particles in AM (i.e., driven by number). We quantify the lightning count difference between the two areas as a function of the amount of ice in the thunderstorm. It shows that AM produces significantly less lightning than CB on average for a similar ice content. Radiometers from TRMM and GPM are then used to compare the median TBs observed in the Amazon with the rest of the globe, to emphasize once again that AM is producing systems that are neither of land nor oceanic nature, but somewhere in the middle. Ocean surface radiation measurement best practices have been developed as a first step to support the interoperability of radiation measurements across multiple ocean platforms and between land and ocean networks. This document describes the consensus by a working group of radiation measurement experts from land, ocean, and aircraft communities. The scope was limited to broadband shortwave (solar) and longwave (terrestrial infrared) surface irradiance measurements for quantification of the surface radiation budget. Best practices for spectral measurements for biological purposes like photosynthetically active radiation and ocean color are only mentioned briefly to motivate future interactions between the physical surface flux and biological radiation measurement communities. Topics discussed in these best practices include instrument selection, handling of sensors and installation, data quality monitoring, data processing, and calibration. It is recognized that platform and resource limitations may prohibit incorporating all best practices into all measurements and that spatial coverage is also an important motivator for expanding current networks. Thus, one of the key recommendations is to perform interoperability experiments that can help quantify the uncertainty of different practices and lay the groundwork for a multi-tiered global network with a mix of high-accuracy reference stations and lower-cost platforms and practices that can fill in spatial gaps. This work addresses the design of sub-terahertz narrow-band resonators for high performance and low-cost manufacturability. The intended application for these resonators is to realize narrow-band filters for passive millimeter-wave sounding of upper atmospheric humidity using the 380 GHz water vapor absorption line. Various narrow-band resonator designs and manufacturing processes were considered for this application. A design based on a waveguide split-ring resonator topology was selected to be developed and manufactured using laser machining. Experimental results are presented and compared with results from simulations for ten narrow-band resonators fabricated with a design center frequency in the WR-2.2 (325–500 GHz) waveguide band. We developed an inexpensive light instrument (ILI) and protocol for the measurement of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) at discrete depths underwater. We tested the accuracy of the ILI against a submersible radiometer (RAD) and a Secchi disk method. The ILI consists of a PAR sensor (HOBO MX2202; Onset) attached to a flat disk that ensures that the sensor faces upwards when lowered through the water column. The flat disk is attached to a rope marked at 1-m increments (to 20 m) that allows for the measurement of PAR at discrete depths. A weight is attached to the bottom of the flat disk to prevent it from drifting. The ILI is much cheaper (US $130), less bulky, and lighter (1.1 kg) than the RAD (US $40,000, weight 9 kg). We tested our method in a mesotrophic lake and in an oligotrophic lake in summer and fall 2023. The correlations between the RAD and ILI measurements of irradiance at depth (as a percentage of surface irradiance), and the depth to which 1% of the PAR at the surface penetrated the water (Z1%PAR), were high and did not significantly differ. There was a difference of 8% in the Z1%PAR determined by the ILI compared with that determined by the RAD. However, the estimated Z1%PAR based on the Secchi disk data was 37% deeper than that calculated with the RAD data. Our method should enable the study of underwater PAR in remote regions where transporting bulky and expensive equipment is impossible due to logistic and/or financial constraints. Radiant exitance values were subcategorized into three groups: < 400, 400– 850, and > 850 mW/cm², labeled as inadequate, marginal, and adequate radiant exitances, respectively. A Woodpecker radiometer was used with a mode lasting of 20 seconds was used with each LCU. Descriptive statistics of the different parameters were evaluated with SPSS version 25. One-way ANOVA and Mann–Whitney tests were performed to determine the mean difference between the groups with a significance value of ˂ 0.05 was considered.Results: Two hundred twenty-three LCUs were surveyed, and the majority were Light–emitting diode (LED). Forty-nine (21.9%), 117 (52.4%), 57 (25.6%) recorded lesser than, 400– 850, and more than 850 mW/cm², respectively. Radiant exitances of < year-old units were found to be higher than those of units used for ˃ 5 years with significant differences (p=0.001). The ANOVA test showed significant differences between the radiant exitance with clinical age and LCU tip conditions and a strong correlation p ˃ 0.050.Conclusion: LED curing lights were the most used in the tested Dental Faculties. More than half of the used LCU offered sufficient radiant exitance. A new cost-effective radiometer has been designed, built, and tested to measure direct normal solar irradiance (DNI). The proposed instrument for solar irradiance measurement is based on an optical fiber as the light beam collector, a semiconductor photodiode to measure the optical power, and a calibration algorithm to convert the optical power into solar irradiance. The proposed radiometer offers the advantage of separating the measurement point, where the optical fiber collects the solar irradiation, from the place where the optical power is measured. A calibration factor is mandatory because the semiconductor photodiode is only spectrally responsive to a limited part of the spectral irradiance. Experimental tests have been conducted under different conditions to evaluate the performance of the proposed device. The non-scanning radiometer with short-wavelength (SW: 0.2–5.0 μm) and total-wavelength (TW: 0.2–50.0 μm) channels is the primary payload of the Integrated Earth–Moon Radiation Observation System (IEMROS), which is designed to provide comprehensive Earth radiation measurements and lunar calibrations at the L1 Lagrange point of the Earth–Moon system from a global perspective. This manuscript introduces a radiometer preflight calibration methodology, which involves background removal and is validated using accurate and traceable reference sources. Simulated Earth view tests are performed to evaluate repeatability, linearity, and gain coefficients over the operating range. Both channels demonstrate repeatability uncertainties better than 0.34%, indicating consistent and reliable measuring performance. Comparative polynomial regression analysis confirms significant linear response characteristics with two-channel nonlinearity less than 0.20%. Gain coefficients are efficiently determined using a two-point calibration approach. Uncertainty analysis reveals an absolute radiometric calibration accuracy of 0.97% for the SW channel and 0.92% for the TW channel, underscoring the non-scanning radiometer's capability to provide dependable global Earth radiation budget data crucial to environmental and climate studies. The IMERG data product is an optimal combination of precipitation estimates from the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM), making use of a variety of data types, primarily data from various spaceborne passive instruments. Previous versions of the IMERG product have been extensively validated by comparisons with gauge data and ground-based radars over land. However, IMERG rain rates, especially sub-daily, over open ocean are less validated due to the scarcity of comparison data, particularly with the relatively new Version 07. To address this issue, we consider IMERG V07 30-min data acquired in tropical cyclones over open ocean. We perform two tasks. The first is a straightforward comparison between IMERG precipitation rates and those retrieved from the GPM Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). From this, we find that IMERG and DPR are close at low rain rates, while, at high rain rates, IMERG tends to be lower than DPR. The second task is the assessment of IMERG's ability to represent or detect structures commonly seen in tropical cyclones, including the annular structure and concentric eyewalls. For this, we operate on IMERG data with many machine learning algorithms and are able to achieve a 96% classification accuracy, indicating that IMERG does indeed contain TC structural information. The passive and active L-band system (PALS) is an airborne microwave instrument suite that combines a separate radar and radiometer airborne instrument with a common antenna. PALS has been used for salinity, wind speed, and soil moisture (SM) measurements, which is critical for calibration and validation of the SM active passive satellite brightness temperature measurements. The combined 1.413 GHz radiometer and 1.26 GHz radar measurements can provide high-accuracy SM measurements over vegetated areas. The new upgraded version of the PALS instrument employs a novel single-chain receiver topology and combines the radar and radiometer instruments. The reduced-noise single-chain receiver PALS instrument was deployed on a DC-3 aircraft for SM measurement in the summer of 2019.

A new forward model (FM) was developed to characterize the influence of precipitation on L-band passive ocean surface measurements. The FM, which relates rain-induced brightness temperature (TB) variations to the rain rate and wind speed (WS), was established through a machine learning approach (referred to as the ML-FM). The soil moisture active passive (SMAP) data matched with integrated multisatellite retrievals for global precipitation measurement (IMERG) rain rate data and cross-calibrated multiplatform (CCMP) wind data were binned as a function of the rain rate, WS, and wind direction. The ML-FM was validated by comparing the simulated top-of-atmosphere (TOA) TB values with SMAP measurements. The results showed favorable agreement between the ML-FM outputs and SMAP data, with a root mean square error (RMSE) smaller than 0.55 K for both the horizontal and vertical polarizations. The validation results for ensuring more reasonable rainfall intensity distributions showed that the ML-FM returned stable results with a slightly reduced RMSE of ∼0.75 K for both the horizontal and vertical polarizations. Based on the ML-FM, we found that sea surface emission exhibited significant dependence on the rain rate for both polarizations. In addition, the ML-FM demonstrated signal saturation when the rain rate exceeded 45 mm/h, while precipitation slightly affected the directional characteristics of sea surface emission. These effects accounted for ∼0.3 K at a rain rate of 50 mm/h. Overall, our analyses demonstrated that the proposed ML-FM achieved superior performance in retrieving the TOA TB for both the vertical and horizontal polarizations with a higher accuracy than existing models.

Passive microwave remote sensing is a vital tool for acquiring valuable information regarding the Earth's surface, with significant applications in agriculture, water management, forestry, and various environmental disciplines. Precision agricultural (PA) practices necessitate the availability of field-scale, high-resolution remote sensing data products. This study focuses on the design and development of a cost-effective, portable L-band microwave radiometer capable of operating from an unmanned aircraft system platform to measure high-resolution surface brightness temperature ($T_{B}$). This radiometer consists of a dual-polarized (Horizontal polarized, H-pol and Vertical polarized, V-pol) antenna and a software-defined radio-based receiver system with a 30 MHz sampling rate. The post-processing methodology encompasses the conversion of raw in-phase and quadratic (I&Q) surface emissions to radiation $T_{B}$ through internal and external calibrations. Radiometric measurements were conducted over an experimental site covering both bare soil within an agricultural field and a large water body. The results yielded a high-resolution $T_{B}$ map that effectively delineated the boundaries between land and water, and identified land surface features. The radiometric temperature measurements of the sky and blackbody demonstrated a standard deviation of 0.95 K for H-pol and 0.57 K for V-pol in the case of the sky and 0.39 K for both H-pol and V-pol in the case of the blackbody observations. The utilization of I&Q samples acquired via the radiometer digital back-end facilitates the generation of different time–frequency (TF) analyses through short-time Fourier transform and power spectral density (PSD). The transformation of radiometer samples into TF representations aids in the identification and mitigation of radio frequency interference originating from the instrument itself and external sources.

Ka‐band Micro rain Doppler radar is an effective tool to investigate the profiles of precipitation microstructure in terms of the raindrop size distribution (DSD). The DSD parameters that vary appreciably with height are indicative of the associated atmospheric phenomena. Hence the present investigation endeavors to put light on the underlying physical processes responsible for the evolution of varied rain microstructure profiles using micro rain radar (MRR), and radiometric measurements complemented with re‐analysis outputs over an urban tropical location, Kolkata (22.57°N, 88.37°E), India. MRR unravels the prevalence of significant biases in the typical power law relationship (Dm = aRb) between rain rate (R) and mass‐weighted mean drop diameter (Dm) along the rain height, especially during intense convective rain events, above the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Consequently, an alternative empirical relation appropriate to account for the R‐Dm variability above the ABL is proposed. Further, radiometric measurements and re‐analysis outputs reveal that the presence of atmospheric instabilities coupled with wind shear impacts above the ABL contributes to the enhanced breakup of raindrops and the deviations in the usual R‐Dm relationship. Thus, the present study intends to highlight the applicability of ground‐based radar measurements over the tropics to devise quantitative precipitation algorithms for reliable rain estimates. A description of the approach is presented that allows one to control the quality of georeferencing of the MTVZA-GYa device and determine the optimal values of the correction parameters. The analysis of the data from this instrument showed that the main contribution to georeferencing errors is introduced by the roll, pitch, and yaw angles, which determine the discrepancy between the instrument coordinate system and the spacecraft coordinate system. In this regard, an iterative algorithm for selecting these angles was proposed where the difference in measurements on the ascending and descending half-turns of the MTVZA-GYa instrument was used as the minimizing function. As a result of applying this algorithm to the results of the MTVZA-GYa measurements in 2020, the mean values of the correction roll, pitch, and yaw angles of this device were calculated. The values were (–0.84 ± 0.15)° for the yaw angle, (–0.44 ± 0.14)° for the roll angle, and (+1.13 ± 0.05)° for the pitch angle. It was shown that the introduction of these angles into the MTVZA-GYa georeferencing procedure can significantly reduce its errors. Thus, the mean divergence of coastlines taken from the high-precision geographic databases and reconstructed from radiometric portraits when adjusting georeferencing is 4.5 km. Climate change is undeniably one of the most pressing and critical challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. In this context, monitoring the Earth's Energy Imbalance (EEI) is fundamental in conjunction with greenhouse gases (GHGs) in order to comprehensively understand and address climate change. The French Uvsq-Sat NG pathfinder mission addresses this issue through the implementation of a Six-Unit CubeSat, which has dimensions of 111.3 × 36.6 × 38.8 cm in its unstowed configuration. Uvsq-Sat NG is a satellite mission spearheaded by the Laboratoire Atmosphères, Observations Spatiales (LATMOS), and supported by the International Satellite Program in Research and Education (INSPIRE). The launch of this mission is planned for 2025. One of the Uvsq-Sat NG objectives is to ensure the smooth continuity of the Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) initiated via the Uvsq-Sat and Inspire-Sat satellites. Uvsq-Sat NG seeks to achieve broadband ERB measurements using state-of-the-art yet straightforward technologies. Another goal of the Uvsq-Sat NG mission is to conduct precise and comprehensive monitoring of atmospheric gas concentrations (CO 2 and CH 4 ) on a global scale and to investigate its correlation with Earth's Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR). Uvsq-Sat NG carries several payloads, including Earth Radiative Sensors (ERSs) for monitoring incoming solar radiation and outgoing terrestrial radiation. A Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectrometer is onboard to assess GHGs' atmospheric concentrations through observations in the wavelength range of 1200 to 2000 nm. Uvsq-Sat NG also includes a high-definition camera (NanoCam) designed to capture images of the Earth in the visible range. The NanoCam will facilitate data post-processing acquired via the spectrometer by ensuring accurate geolocation of the observed scenes. It will also offer the capability of observing the Earth's limb, thus providing the opportunity to roughly estimate the vertical temperature profile of the atmosphere. We present here the scientific objectives of the Uvsq-Sat NG mission, along with a comprehensive overview of the CubeSat platform's concepts and payload properties as well as the mission's current status. Furthermore, we also describe a method for the retrieval of atmospheric gas columns (CO 2 , CH 4 , O 2 , H 2 O) from the Uvsq-Sat NG NIR Spectrometer data. The retrieval is based on spectra simulated for a range of environmental conditions (surface pressure, surface reflectance, vertical temperature profile, mixing ratios of primary gases, water vapor, other trace gases, cloud and aerosol optical depth distributions) as well as spectrometer characteristics (Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and spectral resolution from 1 to 6 nm). A Moon-based radiometer can provide continuous measurements for the Earth's full-disk broadband irradiance, which is useful for studying the Earth's Radiation Budget (ERB) at the height of the Top of the Atmosphere (TOA). The ERB describes how the Earth obtains solar energy and emits energy to space through the outgoing broadband Short-Wave (SW) and emitted thermal Long-Wave (LW) radiation. In this work, a model for estimating the Earth's outgoing radiative flux from the measurements of a Moon-based radiometer is established. Using the model, the full-disk LW and SW outgoing radiative flux are gained by converting the unfiltered entrance pupil irradiances (EPIs) with the help of the anisotropic characteristics of the radiances. Based on the radiative transfer equation, the unfiltered EPI time series is used to validate the established model. By comparing the simulations for a Moon-based radiometer with the satellite-based data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology Advanced Radiometer (NISTAR) and the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) datasets, the simulations show that the daytime SW fluxes from the Moon-based measurements are expected to vary between 194 and 205 Wm−2; these simulations agree well with the CERES data. The simulations are about 5 to 20 Wm−2 smaller than the NISTAR data. For the simulated Moon-based LW fluxes, the range is 251~287 Wm−2. The Moon-based and NISTAR fluxes are consistently 5~15 Wm−2 greater than CERES LW fluxes, and both of them also show larger diurnal variations compared with the CERES fluxes. The correlation coefficients of SW fluxes for Moon-based data and NISTAR data are 0.97, 0.63, and 0.53 for the months of July, August, and September, respectively. Compared with the SW flux, the correlation of LW fluxes is more stable for the same period and the correlation coefficients are 0.87, 0.69, and 0.61 for July to September 2017. Subsurface electromagnetic sensing techniques that can measure material properties of hidden layers are useful for applications such as security screening. A system combining active (radar) and passive (radiometer) sensing into one unit, or a pactive sensor, can address drawbacks of extant single mode sensors by reducing measurement ambiguity and resolving features better, thereby leading to improved identification of the hidden layer. This work investigates a technique to noninvasively extract the complex permittivity and thickness of hidden dielectrics using a pactive sensor. A proof-of-concept demonstration of an optimization-based inversion technique is used to extract the properties of an unknown, hidden layer in a multi-layered dielectric structure. The technique uses active data to estimate dielectric constant and thickness, and passive data to estimate loss tangent. The experimental setup is selected to represent a simplified single-voxel security scenario consisting of multiple dielectric layers backed by a human phantom layer (heated water). Tests using K-band prototype radar and radiometer systems yielded results with less than 5% error in the extracted dielectric constant, loss tangent and thickness of the unknown layer.

Objectives: Since there is only nadir radiometer onboard for the wide-swath altimetry, the wet tropospheric delay can only be corrected by models inside the cross-swath or substituted by the nadir radiometer measured data, which lead to the lower accuracy.Methods: In order to improve the accuracy of wet tropospheric correction (WTC) inside the cross-swath, an optimum interpolation method to fuse the nadir radiometer WTC is proposed, and it is verified by taken the SWOT (surface water and ocean topography) wide-swath altimeter as example. Results: Inside the cross-swath, when the ERA5 (ECMWF reanalysis 5th generation) data are used, the residual of WTC after correction by optimum interpolation method can be reduced by 40% compared with the nadir radiometer WTC substituted. When the simulated WTCs from the spectrum of radiometer measured WTCs are used, the residual of WTC after correction by optimum in⁃ terpolation method can be reduced by 80% in all latitude areas compared with the nadir radiometer WTC substituted.Conclusions: The optimum interpolation method has much better accuracy than the nadir radiometer WTC substituted in the case of high water vapor variability. This study presents an original approach on how to generate a radiator with an emissivity less than one by using a conventional blackbody and a screen with a defined area density of holes. This is needed for the calibration of infrared (IR) radiometry, which is a very useful form of temperature measurement in industrial, scientific, and medical applications. One of the major sources of errors in IR radiometry is the emissivity of the surface being measured. Emissivity is a physically well-defined parameter, but in real experiments, it may be influenced by many factors: surface texture, spectral properties, oxidation, and aging of surfaces. While commercial blackbodies are prevalent, the much-needed grey bodies with a known emissivity are unavailable. This work describes a methodology for how to calibrate radiometers in the lab or in the factory or FAB using the "screen approach" and a novel thermal sensor dubbed Digital TMOS. The fundamental physics required to appreciate the reported methodology is reviewed. The linearity in emissivity of the Digital TMOS is demonstrated. This article aims to establish a new system for pyranometer calibration traceable to the radiometric chain. Different spectrum high flux LEDs have been used as tunable irradiance sources. The calibration procedure, uncertainty budget, and traceability chain of the solar irradiance measurements are presented. Additionally, the results were evaluated using a reference pyranometer, calibrated traceable to radiometric traceability and World Radiometric Reference (WRR). The uncertainty values are also estimated to be around 1.19 % (k = 2) for LEDs-based pyranometer-pyranometer calibration (WRR traceability), and about 0.68 % (k = 2) for reference standard radiometer based (Radiometric traceability). The deviation between the reference pyranometer and the pyranometer under test was about 0.8% using LED at 655nm for irradiance of 500 W/m2. The sensitivity results have been evaluated by reference standard pyranometer traceable to WRR using a xenon lamp as a solar source, with a deviation of about 1 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate ocean surface wind vector (OSWV) products are important for various offshore operations. Currently, different types of satellites provide OSWV data, using one of which alone does not yield a high accuracy, reasonable revisit time, and full coverage over large ocean environments. Moreover, the current OSWV products that were generated by fusing different satellite-based wind datasets have their own limitations for operational applications (e.g., long latency). Therefore, the main objective of this study was to produce improved OSWV products using a spatiotemporal fusion algorithm applied to a combination of wind datasets collected by seven satellites: scatterometers (ScatSat-1, MetOp-A, MetOp-B, and MetOp-C), a nonpolarimetric radiometer (GCOM-W), and imaging synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems (Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B). The spatial resolution, frequency, and latency for the final fused OSWV product were 1 km, six hours, and two to six hours, respectively. The comparison of the results with those derived from meteorological reanalysis models at different study areas showed the high potential of the proposed method for operational OSWV mapping and monitoring. This paper is a technical report describing the use of an open-source instrument called LANcube v2 to estimate a lighting devices inventory. The instrument has 5 color sensitive sensors, each on a face of a cube. The instrument can be mounted on a car roof to create a map of the artificial light at night while roaming the streets and roads. Based on the temporal variations of the detected signal on various cube’s faces, we developed a method of finding the approximate position in 3D of each source. The lamp spectral types can be determined relatively well thanks to the color balance of the raw Red (R), Green (G), Blue (B), and Clear (C) color bands. If one assumes a typical angular photometry of a source with respect to its location, it is possible to estimate roughly its current luminous flux. Such information allows us to build a lighting devices inventory of a territory. One advantage of that new method is that it can provide information about the private sources that are always excluded from public lighting inventories. We compared the inventory extracted with that new methodology with an in-situ lamp inventory made for two villages in Canada. This comparison allows us to emphasize the strengths and limitations of the method by comparing to the ground truth. We found that we were able to detect 99% of the sources with flux higher than 1000 lumen and located within 15 meters from the road. We also found that we generally overestimate the height of the devices by 21 to 51% depending on the lamp photometry. This overestimate surely reflects in an overestimate of the fluxes. Finally, we found that the proposed method is very efficient to recognize the spectral type of the devices with 99% of success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The geostationary orbit microwave multi-channel radiometer has the advantages of high real-time performance and large coverage, which plays an important role in typhoon, strong precipitation detection, and medium-to-short-term meteorological/oceanic forecasting. However, due to the difficulty in engineering development of the payload, its application on-orbit has not yet been achieved at present. To satisfy the requirements of fine and quantitative application of satellite observation data, a geostationary orbit microwave multi-channel radiometer with a 10-m-caliber is developed, in which the spatial resolution at horizontal polarization is better than 24 km at 54 GHz. In geostationary orbit microwave multi-channel radiometer, a quasi-optical feed network covering nearly 28 frequency octave bands and ranging from 23.8 to 664 GHz is proposed to solve the technical problem of multi-frequency sharing in the system. Meanwhile, a high-precision reflector preparation method and a high-precision unfolding scheme are proposed, which are considered as a solution for the large-diameter reflector with a high maintaining surface accuracy. A high-precision antenna prototype with 0.54-m is developed, and the tests are performed to verify the key technologies, such as the preparation of high-precision grating reflectors at the micron level, high surface accuracy detection, and sub-millimeter wave antenna electrical performance testing. The results indicate that measured main beam efficiency of the 664 GHz antenna is better than 95.5%. In addition, the system sensitivity is greater than 1.5 K, and the calibration accuracy is better than 1.8 K, according to the results of an analysis of the multi-channel radiometer’s essential parameters and calibration errors.

Here we compare various parameters that are used to define the depth of the ocean’s productive layer, the euphotic zone, during the initiation of the spring phytoplankton bloom in the North Atlantic (47°N/20°W). These are (1) the compensation depth (Zc, where gross photosynthesis balances autotrophic respiration), (2) the depth horizon of 1% of surface photosynthetic active irradiance (Ed(0-,PAR), (3) depth horizon of 1% of surface Ed(488), and (4) the depth of the bottom of the fluorescence maximum. We also use two related parameters, the depth of the mixed layer and the ratio of integral gross production to integral respiration as a scaling factor for a proxy for the critical depth. Over the course of the observational period (25 April - 7 May, 1989), the mixed layer decreased from 162 to 20 m, and Zc decreased from 64 to 35 m. The depth of 1%Ed(0-,PAR) followed the trajectory of Zc, while Ed(488) and the depth of the bottom of the fluorescence maximum were about 10 m deeper, on average. These data support the criterion of the depth of “1%PAR” to describe the productive layer for more productive areas of the ocean. However, 1% of Ed(488) or the bottom of the fluorescence maximum could be used over a broader range of trophic conditions.

Climate change is undeniably one of the most pressing and critical challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. In this context, monitoring the Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI) is fundamental in conjunction with greenhouse gases (GHGs) in order to comprehensively understand and address climate change. The French Uvsq-Sat NG pathfinder mission addresses this issue through the implementation of a Six-Unit CubeSat, which has dimensions of 111.3 × 36.6 × 38.8 cm in its unstowed configuration. Uvsq-Sat NG is a satellite mission spearheaded by the Laboratoire Atmosphères, Observations Spatiales (LATMOS), and supported by the International Satellite Program in Research and Education (INSPIRE). The launch of this mission is planned for 2025. One of the Uvsq-Sat NG objectives is to ensure the smooth continuity of the Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) initiated via the Uvsq-Sat and Inspire-Sat satellites. Uvsq-Sat NG seeks to achieve broadband ERB measurements using state-of-the-art yet straightforward technologies. Another goal of the Uvsq-Sat NG mission is to conduct precise and comprehensive monitoring of atmospheric gas concentrations (CO2 and CH4) on a global scale and to investigate its correlation with Earth’s Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR). Uvsq-Sat NG carries several payloads, including Earth Radiative Sensors (ERSs) for monitoring incoming solar radiation and outgoing terrestrial radiation. A Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectrometer is onboard to assess GHGs’ atmospheric concentrations through observations in the wavelength range of 1200 to 2000 nm. Uvsq-Sat NG also includes a high-definition camera (NanoCam) designed to capture images of the Earth in the visible range. The NanoCam will facilitate data post-processing acquired via the spectrometer by ensuring accurate geolocation of the observed scenes. It will also offer the capability of observing the Earth’s limb, thus providing the opportunity to roughly estimate the vertical temperature profile of the atmosphere. We present here the scientific objectives of the Uvsq-Sat NG mission, along with a comprehensive overview of the CubeSat platform’s concepts and payload properties as well as the mission’s current status. Furthermore, we also describe a method for the retrieval of atmospheric gas columns (CO2, CH4, O2, H2O) from the Uvsq-Sat NG NIR Spectrometer data. The retrieval is based on spectra simulated for a range of environmental conditions (surface pressure, surface reflectance, vertical temperature profile, mixing ratios of primary gases, water vapor, other trace gases, cloud and aerosol optical depth distributions) as well as spectrometer characteristics (Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and spectral resolution from 1 to 6 nm).

Objectives. In order to solve fundamental metrological problems concerning the reproduction and transmission of spectral radiometry units, as well as developing methods and tools for metrological support of modern technologies such as nanophotolithography in the electronics industry, synchrotron radiation can be used. When developing solid-state sources and receivers of radiation, new topical problems arise in connection with the metrological characteristics of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), multi-element array receivers, charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras and telescopes, whose successful solution depends on the properties of a reference source of synchrotron radiation. Therefore, the purpose of the present work is to develop spectral radiometry methods for obtaining metrological channels using an electron storage ring in order to control the characteristics of electronics components, as well as for studying and calibrating radiometers, photometers, and emitters operating in the visible, ultraviolet and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.Methods. Methods for transmitting spectroradiometric units on an electron storage ring are based on the classical theory of Julian Schwinger, which describes the electromagnetic radiation of a relativistic electron to calculate the spectral and energetic synchrotron radiation characteristics taking polarization components into account.Results. The possibility of developing methods for transmitting spectral radiometric units using synchrotron radiation was evaluated by means of a test setup, which included a monochromator-based comparator, a telescope with a CCD array, a spectroradiometer, a radiometer, a photometer, a goniometer, and an integrating sphere. This allowed the full set of spectroradiometric and photometric characteristics of radiation sources and receivers to be measured: from the most differential distribution of the spectral radiance density of the emitting region to the integral radiation flux. The results were compared with the reference synchrotron radiation source.Conclusions. Among possible approaches for determining the metrological characteristics of LED emitters, multielement array receivers, CCD cameras, and telescopes, synchrotron radiation seems to be the most promising. This approach allows the small size of the emitting region of synchrotron radiation, the Gaussian distribution of radiance over the emitting region of the synchrotron electron bunch, as well as the wide dynamic range of spectrum tuning due to changes in the energy and number of accelerated electrons, to be taken into account.

The MEaSUREs Calibrated Enhanced-Resolution Passive Microwave Daily Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grid 2.0 Brightness Temperature (CETB) Earth System Data Record (ESDR) includes conventional- and enhanced-resolution radiometer brightness temperature (TB) images on standard, compatible grids from calibrated satellite radiometer measurements collected over a multi-decade period. Recently, the CETB team processed the first 4 years of enhanced resolution Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) L-band (1.41 GHz) radiometer TB images. The CETB processing employs the radiometer form of the Scatterometer Image Reconstruction (rSIR) algorithm to create enhanced resolution images, which are posted on fine resolution grids. In this paper, we evaluate the effective resolution of the SMAP TB image products using coastline and island crossings. We similarly evaluate the effective resolution of the SMAP L1C_TB_E enhanced resolution product that is based on Backus-Gilbert processing. We present a comparison of the spatial resolution of the rSIR and L1C_TB_E enhanced resolution products with conventionally-processed (gridded) SMAP data. We find that the effective resolution of daily CETB rSIR SMAP TB images is slightly finer than that of L1C_TB_E and about 30% finer than conventionally processed data.

The procedure for geographic reference of the data of radiometric measurements of the MTVZA-GYa microwave scanner/sounder onboard the Meteor-M No. 2-2 spacecraft is described. Georeferencing is performed on the basis of the information contained in the instrument's measurement data files (in.hdf format) (the observation time of each surface element, common for all frequency channels), as well as the description of the scanning scheme of this instrument, presented in scientific periodicals (sighting angles, scanning speed, etc.). As additional information, necessary to perform the georeferencing operation (orbit parameters, etc.), data freely available on the Internet are used. The georeferencing procedure consists of several sequentially performed operations, including determination of satellite coordinates in the inertial coordinate system, forming observation vectors in the instrumental coordinate system, determining the matrices of direct and inverse transitions for the six used coordinate systems, determination of the coordinates of the observation point in the inertial coordinate system, conversion of the coordinates to the Greenwich coordinate system, etc. In the presented form, it is possible to flexibly configure this operation, taking into account the instability of the orbit spacecraft position, variations in the instrument-scanning speed, instability of setting time stamps, errors in mounting the instrument on the spacecraft, etc. Also, the described georeferencing procedure can be used as part of automated algorithms for processing measurement data and procedures for searching for optimal values of the corrective parameters (for example, the roll, pitch, and yaw angles of the spacecraft and/or instrument). The current solar tower plants demand the measurement of high solar irradiance on the receiver. This measurement would facilitate the operation of the plant, the estimation of the receiver efficiency and would contribute to the safety of the receiver. Nowadays, these plants don't have a system to measure the flux because there are some limitations, as the difficulty to add new elements to the design and the structure of the tower. It is necessary to include a flux measurement system in the planning and construction of the commercial plants. This work presents a validation of the new indirect method to measure the flux which only use the surface of the receiver, a radiometer and a digital camera. In the context of an international project, the new method to measure the flux has been tested with a different receiver and with different working conditions. The receiver tested in this project is a volumetric receiver made of silicon carbide. The flux measurements have been done in the solar tower facility of the Plataforma Solar de Almería, the SSPS-CRS. The results obtained with this system have been compared to the results obtained with the reference flux measurement system based on a white lambertian target, obtaining a good level of agreement. This reference method can't be extrapolated to the commercial plants because it has moving parts that can't be added to the design of the towers. An eight-channel phased array (PA) radiometer front-end is developed to serve video-rate passive millimeter wave (PMMW) imaging at ${V}$ -band. The front-end is implemented by multichip module (MCM), in which all active microwave functions are realized with GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) while passive devices and connection lines are designed on printed circuit board (PCB). All receiver channels are linearly arranged and equipped with waveguide-fed dielectric rod antennas (DRAs). By introducing a surface metallized bent structure into the DRA, the phase center of element antenna can be changed, which provides an effective approach to suppress grating lobes without a significant increase in structural complexity of the sparse array. Moreover, chip assembly details are presented together with the methods taken to mitigate the mismatch caused by wire-bond interconnections and MMICs. Single-channel (SC) and overall-module measurements are applied to the front-end, and the results reveal that the front-end achieves 50-dB gain, 5-dB noise figure (NF), ±24° field of view (FoV) and −10-dB side/grating lobes within the frequency band of 52–56 GHz. The article presents the results of determining the activity of beta radiation of radon-222 radionuclide using the MKGB-01 radiometer in the atmospheric air of the city of Termez, Surkhandarya region of the Republic of Uzbekistan. 6 samples were taken from different locations and the activity of beta radiation in the MKGB-01 radiometer was determined. This article extends the application of an existing change-detection-based, time-series soil moisture retrieval algorithm to nonconcurrent active and passive measurements from WindSat/AMSR2 and the Soil Moisture Active Passive radar, which was active from late April until mid-July of 2015. A time series of L-band radar backscatter observations was used to populate an underdetermined matrix equation whose optimal solution was derived via a bounded linear least squares estimator, and whose bounds were derived from a time series of radiometer-derived soil moisture estimates (taken by either WindSat or AMSR2). Surface soil moisture estimates are compared with in-situ measurement probes, which were treated as ground truth. Error statistics and time-series results for the validation sites are presented here and conclusions derived therefrom. The overall RMSE and unbiased RMSE for the retrieval algorithm, taken across all reference pixels considered in the study, were 0.070 $\mathbf{m}^{3}/\mathbf{m}^{3}$ and 0.067 $\mathbf{m}^{3}/\mathbf{m}^{3}$, respectively, when using WindSat to constrain the algorithm. When using AMSR2 to constrain the algorithm, the RMSE and unbiased RMSE were 0.093 $\mathbf{m}^{3}/\mathbf{m}^{3}$ and 0.090 $\mathbf{m}^{3}/\mathbf{m}^{3}$, respectively.

Abstract The Japanese MMX sample return mission to Phobos by JAXA will carry a rover developed by CNES and DLR that will be deployed on Phobos to perform in situ analysis of the Martian moon’s surface properties. Past images of the surface of Phobos show that it is covered by a layer of regolith. However, the mechanical and compositional properties of this regolith are poorly constrained. In particular, from current remote images, very little is known regarding the particle sizes, their chemical composition, the packing density of the regolith as well as other parameters such as friction and cohesion that influence surface dynamics. Understanding the properties and dynamics of the regolith in the low-gravity environment of Phobos is important to trace back its history and surface evolution. Moreover, this information is also important to support the interpretation of data obtained by instruments onboard the main MMX spacecraft, and to minimize the risks involved in the spacecraft sampling operations. The instruments onboard the Rover are a Raman spectrometer (RAX), an infrared radiometer (miniRad), two forward-looking cameras for navigation and science purposes (NavCams), and two cameras observing the interactions of regolith and the rover wheels (WheelCams). The Rover will be deployed before the MMX spacecraft samples Phobos’ surface and will be the first rover to drive on the surface of a Martian moon and in a very low gravity environment. Accurate information on tropical cyclone position, intensity, and structure is critical for storm surge prediction. Atmospheric reanalysis datasets can provide gridded, full coverage, long-term and multi-parameter atmospheric fields for the research on the impact of tropical cyclones on the upper ocean, which effectively makes up for the uneven temporal and spatial distribution of satellite remote sensing and in situ data. However, the reanalysis data cannot accurately describe characteristic parameters of tropical cyclones, especially in high wind conditions. In this paper, the performance of the tropical cyclone representation in ERA5 (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5th Generation) is investigated and analyzed with respect to IBTrACS (International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship) during the period 2018–2020. Comparisons demonstrate that ERA5 winds significantly underestimate the maximum wind speed during the tropical cyclones (>30 m/s) compared to those provided by IBTrACS. An effective wind reconstruction method is examined to enhance tropical cyclone intensity representation in reanalysis data in 94 cases of 31 tropical cyclones 2018–2020. The reconstructed wind speeds are in good agreement with the SFMR (Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer) measured data and SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) L-band radiometer remotely sensed measurements. The proposed wind reconstruction method can effectively improve the accuracy of the tropical cyclone representation in ERA5, and will benefit from the establishment of remote sensing satellite retrieval model and the forcing fields of the ocean model. A method has been developed for the retrieval of the atmospheric boundary layer parameters in tropical cyclones, namely the dynamic speed, the wind speed at a 10 m height, and the roughness parameter. For the analysis, the wind speed profiles were obtained from NOAA GPS-dropsondes and collocated with the data from the Stepped-Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR). The parameters of the atmospheric boundary layer from the GPS-dropsonde data were obtained by taking into account the self-similarity of the velocity defect profile. The emissivity, determined from the radiometric measurement data, was calibrated to the field data from the GPS-dropsondes. Empirical relations between the wind speed, dynamic wind speed, and aerodynamic drag coefficient with the surface emissivity have been proposed. Based on a comparison of the measured dynamic parameters and the surface emissivity, empirical formulas have also been proposed. From an analysis of cross-polarized Sentinel-1 SAR images and collocated SFMR measurements for hurricanes Irma (2017/09/07) and Maria (2017/09/21 and 2017/09/23), we have obtained the dependences of the NRCS on the ocean surface emissivity, surface wind speed, and friction velocity. Spectrum sensing is needed in frequency agile cognitive radio systems, cognitive radar systems as well as in (cognitive) electronic warfare systems. This paper studies window based detectors where window shapes can be matched for the expected spectrum. The provided analytical results for the probabilities of false alarm and detection are valid for arbitrary windows. Based on the window shape mismatch analysis, it was concluded that the simple rectangular window is often sufficient if its bandwidth is properly set. Furthermore, based on the window bandwidth mismatch analysis, it was discussed how many different rectangular windows are needed to cover the instantaneous analysis bandwidth of the receiver without compromising too much on sensitivity. Finally, suitable constant false alarm rate threshold setting schemes were compared. It was observed that almost ideal setting schemes exist.

This study presents an original approach on how to generate a radiator with an emissivity less than one by using a conventional blackbody and a screen with a defined area density of holes. This is needed for the calibration of infrared (IR) radiometry, which is a very useful form of temperature measurement in industrial, scientific, and medical applications. One of the major sources of errors in IR radiometry is the emissivity of the surface being measured. Emissivity is a physically well-defined parameter, but in real experiments, it may be influenced by many factors: surface texture, spectral properties, oxidation, and aging of surfaces. While commercial blackbodies are prevalent, the much-needed grey bodies with a known emissivity are unavailable. This work describes a methodology for how to calibrate radiometers in the lab or in the factory or FAB using the “screen approach” and a novel thermal sensor dubbed Digital TMOS. The fundamental physics required to appreciate the reported methodology is reviewed. The linearity in emissivity of the Digital TMOS is demonstrated. The study describes in detail how to obtain the perforated screen as well as how to do the calibration.

• Normal concentrations of ionized calcium in children differ from adults. • Radiometer instruments record lab results for all analytes independent of the order(s) placed. • Radiometer data can be used to apply exclusion criteria and calculate reference intervals. Measurement of ionized calcium (iCa) reflects bioavailable calcium and has significant utility in children. However, robust pediatric iCa reference intervals (RI) have not been well-established. In this study, we retrospectively calculated RI for iCa in a pediatric population by accessing archived data acquired on Radiometer instruments and applying stringent exclusion criteria. Data saved on 4 Radiometer ABL800 FLEX blood gas analyzers were queried. Exclusion criteria were applied based on information available from these instruments. iCa results were plotted and inflection points were visually identified. Following outlier removal and partition verification, age-specific RI were calculated using a nonparametric rank order approach from > 5,000 individuals. Finally, the stringency of the exclusion criteria was assessed by calculating RI from additional results in the dataset and comparing to existing in-house ranges. Six age-specific iCa partitions were established from 0 to 19 years. Relative to adults, wider ranges for the central 95th percentile were observed early in life that progressively narrowed with increasing age and approached adult concentrations by 2.5 years. Analysis of concurrent data for sodium and creatinine in the dataset suggest the applied exclusion criteria reduced the likelihood of including results from acutely-ill children. Normal concentrations of iCa in children are more variable than adults. Observed differences may reflect the transition from maternally supplied calcium to nutritional sources, the maturation of calcium homeostatic mechanisms, and/or the need for calcium for growth/development. This study also demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of using data archived on Radiometer analyzers to establish pediatric RI. This approach enables rapid, cost-effective evaluation of large datasets and may be a feasible option when prospective or detailed retrospective analyses are not possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is important to monitor the take-off and landing of civil aircraft using passive detection methods. Due to the strict aircraft safety requirements and the electromagnetic environment around an airport, using too many active detection methods should be avoided. Using an aircraft's microwave radiation signal detection is very advantageous because it does not actively emit signals and has a strong cloud penetration, suitable for all-weather observation. This paper introduces a synthetic aperture microwave radiation system for monitoring the take-off and landing of civil aircraft, which is characterized by real-time two-dimensional imaging, and the image refresh rate can reach 10 ms, which meets the high refresh rate requirements for aircraft imaging. Applicable system parameters and antenna array distribution scheme and imaging algorithm are given. Then the paper focuses on the error analysis and correction method of the system. The correction method is simple and fast, which avoids the disadvantage that the error needs to be corrected regularly in the laboratory environment, and is suitable for airport application. Finally, the simulation and experimental results show that this technology can be used for real-time monitoring of civil aircraft during take-off and landing, and it is a practical means to assisting landing. The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission includes a unique combination of instruments intended to provide daily global soil moisture data with high accuracy and resolution. Due to radar instrument failure, the default resolution of the data product decreased from the intended 9 km to 36 km shortly after the mission started to return data. To improve this, we employed the Scatterometer Image Reconstruction algorithm in its radiometer form (rSIR) to enhance the resolution of the radiometer brightness temperature measurements from which the soil moisture was derived. This paper compares the soil moisture estimates created from the rSIR-enhanced brightness temperatures with SMAP project radiometer L2_SM_SP and SMAP-Sentinel L2_SM_P products reported on 9 km and 3 km grids, respectively. We find that the difference of the rSIR-enhanced passive soil moisture product is generally within 0.020 cm 3 cm − 3 RMS of the 9 km SMAP radiometer L2_SM_SP and 0.045 cm 3 cm − 3 RMS of the 3 km SMAP-Sentinel L2_SM_P soil moisture products. The accuracy of the rSIR soil moisture can be improved by including better antenna pattern correction methods applied to the input TB measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Earth's radiation budget (ERB), measured at the top of the atmosphere (TOP), quantifies the radiation imbalance between the Earth–atmosphere system and space. The ERB's measurement accuracy depends on the observation system's design and calibration technology. Fitting regional scanning data from polar satellite payloads is the most common way to obtain the global radiation budget. Additionally, the radiometers are calibrated by onboard stable radiation sources. We propose a new ERB radiometer operating at the Lagrange L1 point of the Earth–Moon system, which has the characteristic of observing the Earth and Moon on a hemispheric spatial scale. Hence, earth-integrated radiation can be measured directly. Furthermore, the Moon is used as a natural source for on-orbit calibration, and the attenuation of the instrument is monitored and corrected through periodic observations. This paper presents the concept of the radiometer and focuses on the design and analysis of the radiometer's observation systems based on optical design and stray radiation suppression. The results show that the system has good imaging quality. The external stray radiation suppression reached an order of 10−8, and the thermal stray radiation can be eliminated by temperature control and compensation.
