The application of solar dryer through greenhouse (GH) model as drying method for crops-based product is extremely important in industrial scale agriculture, especially in developed country. The drying model is considered environmentally friendly since it utilizes solar power as the main drying energy. However, the fundamental operational aspect of the basic GH is less discussed according to the drying mechanism of the dried product. In this work, three small-scale drying model are evaluated: open drying (OD), natural convection GH (NCGH), and forced convection GH (FCGH). The drying product is potato, which can be taken as an essential agricultural product in modern world. The OD model has the lowest mass loss rate which less than 50 % of the water from product can be evaporated. The operation of both GH is satisfactory, resulting more than 60 % moisture evaporation. The drying characteristic indicates the two-step failing rate which makes the mass loss fluctuation from the process. The highest mass loss is observed during the constant rate period around 21 % for FCGH and 18 % for NCGH. In addition, the detailed analysis on the effect of each process is discussed in this work. For example, the presence of hair-like structure and the movement of the pith of dried potato during the process. Also, a higher drying rate from NCGH and FCGH initiate the gelatinization and compartmentalization, resulting a substantial water evaporation of the product. It confirms the important correlation of the drying process and water diffusion mechanism of the dried product. This article presents the results of testing the effect of virus infection on the frost resistance of sour cherry varieties of Ukrainian breeding. ‘Ksenia’ and ‘Boguslavka’ varieties were used. Damage to the tissues of buds and shoots at temperatures of 4 °C, –25 °С, –30 °С was compared on plants infected with viruses (PNRSV in the variety ‘Ksenia’, PDV in the variety ‘Boguslavka’) and healthy plants. The degree of frost damage was classified on a scale from zero (no damage) to five (100% tissue damage). In each variant, 10–34 buds and 3–14 shoots were tested. It was found that the PDV and PNRSV viruses have a negative effect on the frost resistance of bud tissues. At –25°С, the average degree of bud tissue damage reached 3.2 points in the variety ‘Ksenia’ (PNRSV) and 4.1 points in the variety ‘Boguslavka’ (PDV). At –30 °C, the degree of damage to the buds of both varieties was 4.2 points. The same temperatures had a less impact on the tissues of the shoots. The highest damage was recorded in cambium tissues of the infected ‘Boguslavka’ variety at –30 °С, and the lowest was in bark samples of the infected ‘Ksenia’ variety (0.8 points at –25 °С).

Abstract Background Modern computational modeling could provide the key to obtaining new insights into the mechanisms of maize stalk failure as well as suggesting new ways to improve stalk strength. However, a complete set of mechanical properties of maize tissues is required to enable computational modeling of maize stems. This study developed two compression test methods for obtaining the longitudinal modulus of elasticity of both rind and pith tissues, assessed the influence of water content on tissue properties, and investigated the relationship between rind modulus and pith modulus. These methods involved uniform 5–7 cm segments of maize stems which were scanned using a flatbed scanner then tested in compression using a universal testing machine in both intact and dissected (rind-only and pith-only) states. Results The modulus of elasticity of pith tissues was highest for fully turgid specimens and decreased as water was removed from the specimens. Water content was negatively correlated with the modulus of elasticity of the rind. Rind and pith tissues were found to be weakly correlated. The median ratio of rind modulus to pith modulus was found to be 17. Of the two methods investigated, the pith-only specimen preparation was found to be simple reliable while the rind-only method was found to be adversely affected by lateral bowing of the specimen. Conclusions Researchers can use the information in this paper to improve computational models of maize stems in three ways: (1) by incorporating realistic values of the longitudinal modulus of elasticity of pith and rind tissues; (2) by selecting pith and rind properties that match empirically observed ratios; and (3) by incorporating appropriate dependencies between these material properties and water content. From an experimental perspective, the intact/pith-only experimental method outlined in this paper is simpler than previously reported methods and provides reliable estimates of both pith and rind modulus of elasticity values. Further research using this measurement method is recommended to more clearly understand the influence of water content and turgor pressure on tissue properties.

The evolution toward small-diameter and fast-growing plantation timbers such as the Pinus elliotti var. elliottii (Engelm) × Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis (Sénéclauze) (PEE×PCH) hybrids around the world is producing large volumes of core wood that are falling short of structural sawn timber grading requirements. Engineered timber products such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated (glulam) offer potential solutions to value-adding this resource, but the bond performance of this feedstock and the extent to which current standards and guides address its common characteristics for bond performance need to be understood. This study investigated the bond quality and performance of clear defect-free, low stiffness out-of-grade PEE×PCH and evaluated this performance using the pass/fail criteria of the CLT bond performance requirements of three national CLT standards. 5-layer CLT delamination samples and shear block test samples were glued using one-component polyurethane (PUR). This process was repeated for common occurring characteristics in this resource of resin, knots, and pith to understand their impact and inform an evaluation on the need to restrict their inclusion. Clear samples had an average glue line delamination of 2.9% and an average glue line wood failure of 96.7%. Resin achieved 9.3% and 92.6%, respectively. While knots had the lowest performance at 24.4% and 77.4%, respectively. When pith was at or adjacent to the glue line, wood failure occurred through the pith and its immediate surrounding fiber. Shear strength and wood failure tests were carried out on glulam and CLT-oriented samples. CLT knot samples were tested in two load orientations. Glulam-oriented samples in clear, resin, pith, and knots achieved an average shear strength of 8.5 MPa, 8.2 MPa, 7.9 MPa, and 8.2 MPa, respectively, and wood failure of 86%, 85%, 90%, and 69%, respectively. CLT-oriented samples in clear and resin both achieved average shear strengths of 4.0 MPa; 0°-loaded and 90°-loaded pith samples achieved 3.6 MPa and 2.4 MPa, while 0°-loaded and 90°-loaded knot samples achieved 4.2 MPa and 4.7 MPa respectively. Average wood failures were 90%, 89%, 96%, 96%, 83%, and 51%, respectively. PRG320 was found to be the most restrictive standard. Resin, knots, and pith were not addressed in the evaluation of delamination or shear strength in any standard, and PRG320 was the only standard to restrict these characteristics over and above structural grading rules. The amount and type of characteristics present vary considerably in structurally graded wood, and even more so for this out-of-grade resource. It was determined that the negative impact that resin, knots, and pith have on bond quality and bond performance calls for some restriction of their inclusion in order to achieve the author's interpretation of the intended bond performance requirements of the CLT standards, which currently do not address these characteristics well or at all. Natural fibers can be an alternative to non-biodegradable synthetic sound-absorbing materials. This study aimed to investigate the acoustic and thermal properties of insulating materials made from wool and sugarcane bagasse. Thermal conductivity, thermal resistance, acoustic and moisture absorption, and fire properties of five insulating materials made from sheep wool, goat fiber, camel wool as well as pith and fiber bundles of sugarcane bagasse were determined. The measurement of the sound absorption coefficient was performed in an impedance tube. The thermal resistance and thermal conductivity coefficient were measured according to the ASTM D5334–08 Standard. The findings show that camel wool has the highest sound-absorbing performance, thermal insulation, and fire-resistant properties. The lowest value of the noise reduction coefficient (NRC) was 0.52 for goat fiber, and the highest was 0.74 for camel wool. The maximum sound absorption coefficient of camel wool was 0.95 at a frequency above 1000 Hz. Thermal conductivity varies between 0.038 and 0.046W/(M.K). Hence, all materials tested can be considered thermally insulating. The results showed insulating materials made from wool, especially camel wool, had better performance than fiber and pith of sugarcane bagasse.

Introduction: Bagasse is the dry pulpy fibrous residue that remains after sugarcane stalks are crushed for juice extraction. Bagasse is widely used in conversional and by-product industries. Bagasse is commonly used as a substitute for wood in many tropical and subtropical countries for the production of pulp, paper, and board. One of the most important conversional industries in the sugarcane agro-industry is chipboard production. In recent years, two chipboard factories from bagasse were exploited in Khuzestan province. In the production of chipboard from bagasse, a lot of waste is produced, most of which include pith. The waste is transferred to the outside of the factory at a great cost and energy level. Also, annually, a large amount of surplus bagasse of conversional Industries is obtained in Khuzestan agro-industries. These wastes cause many environmental and health problems, while these wastes can be used to generate energy. On the other hand, chipboard industries consume a lot of energy which is mostly fossil energy. Nowadays, in many sugarcane agro-industries in different countries, wastes are used to generate energy for sugar plants and conversional industries. Bagasse is often used as a primary fuel source for sugar mills. Materials and Methods: Current research is focused on the direct energy consumed in chipboard production from sugarcane bagasse and whether it can be provided by using residues and wastes of Debal Khozaie Agro-Industry Company. Data were collected from agro-industry companies as well as by sampling and measuring waste, input and energy consumption at the chipboard factory of Debal Khozaie. Direct energy consumed in the chipboard production from bagasse includes diesel fuel, electricity, natural gas, and labor. Input and output values of materials (bagasse, pith, etc.), and energy consumption (electricity, diesel, natural gas, etc.) were collected using both laboratory tests and data available in agro-industry. Potential of energy generation from bagasse, pith, wood chips, and straw in Debal Khozaie agro-industry, were considered by the direct burning method. Also, the potential of biogas production from vinasse in agro-industry for energy production was calculated. The moisture of bagasse (fresh bagasse, 24 hours, five days, 30 days, and 45 days after gathering), outdoor dried pith, outdoor dried straw and wood chip were measured based on the ASTM D2974 standard method in the laboratory. Ash percentage of bagasse, peat, straw, and Wood chips were measured using a furnace, desiccator and a scale. Also, the lower heating value of bagasse, straw, pith, and wood chips were measured using a calorimeter bomb. Results and Discussion: The direct energy consumption in the chipboard factory was determined to be 5.829 GJ m-3 of produced chipboard. Natural gas and electricity were the major sources of direct energy with 78.52% and 18.87% share, respectively. To replace these sources, pith and woodchips form chipboard factory, sugarcane leaves, remainder sugarcane bagasse, and vinasse from molasses-based Razi alcohol factory were considered. Properties of the substituted resources were determined including ash, moisture content, heating value (using bomb calorimeter), and amount of woodchips along with the biogas potential from anaerobic fermentation of vinasse. Results showed that woody residues from chipboard factory and Debal Khozaie Agro-Industry Company had the potential to provide 4.33 fold the energy provided by gas in the chipboard factory, considering the efficiency equal to 60%. Using the residues of the chipboard factory individually, it is possible to replace all the consumed natural gas and electricity energy needed in the chipboard factory as well. According to the volume of available vinasse, the potential biogas production from this resource estimated to be 8.82 Gm3. Conclusion: Electricity, natural gas, and diesel fuel constitute the direct energy consumed in the production of chipboard, and natural gas with 78.52% has the highest share. Electricity accounts for 18.87% of direct energy consumption. The specific energy of chipboard production at the chipboard factory was 5.829 GJ m-3. Only using the pith of chipboard factory can produce 2.85 times the total energy of natural gas consumed in chipboard factory. Investigation of the potential of biogas production from vinasse in Debal Khozaie agro-industry showed that it is possible to generate energy equivalent to 8824.3 thousand cubic meters of natural gas. Overall, the study showed that using the wastes of chipboard factory and sugarcane agro-industry has the potential to replace the entire natural gas and electricity consumption in chipboard factory.

The main goal of this study was non-destructive evaluation of wooden elements using ultrasonic waves. The inspection was carried out on wooden beams from a historical object. Elastic wave signals were processed by ultrasonic transmission tomography to obtain imaging of the internal structure of tested elements without disturbing their state and integrity. The focus was on the influence of wood anisotropy on the propagation of ultrasonic waves. A novel method of determining the position of the cross-section pith was proposed. The study presented that the proposed imaging approach was capable to assess the technical condition of historic wooden beams by determining the degree of wood damage and the location of discontinuities, scratches or fibrosis in the tested cross-section. Background and Aims The Early Devonian (Emsian, 400–395 Ma) tracheophyte Leptocentroxyla tetrarcha Bickner et Tomescu emend. Tomescu et McQueen combines plesiomorphic Psilophyton -type tracheid thickenings with xylem architecture intermediate between the plesiomorphic basal euphyllophyte haplosteles and the complex actinosteles of Middle Devonian euphyllophytes. We document xylem development in Leptocentroxyla based on anatomy and explore its implications, which may provide a window into the evolution of pith. Methods Leptocentroxyla is preserved by permineralization in the Battery Point Formation (Quebec, Canada). Serial sections obtained using the cellulose acetate peel technique document branching pattern, anatomy of trace divergence to appendages, protoxylem architecture, and variations in tracheid size and wall thickening patterns. Key Results Leptocentroxyla has opposite decussate pseudo-whorled branching and mesarch protoxylem, and represents the earliest instance of central histological differentiation in a euphyllophyte actinostele. Tracheids at the centre of xylem exhibit simplified Psilophyton -type wall thickenings and are similar in size (at the axis centre) or smaller than the surrounding metaxylem tracheids (at the centre of appendage traces). Conclusions The position and developmental attributes of the simplified Psilophyton -type tracheids suggest they may have been generated by the protoxylem developmental pathway. This supports the delayed and shortened protoxylem differentiation hypothesis, which explains the evolution of pith by (1) delay in the onset of differentiation and lengthening of cell growth duration in a central protoxylem strand; and (2) shortening of the interval of differentiation of those tracheids, leading to progressive simplification (and eventual loss) of secondary wall thickenings, and replacement of tracheids with a central parenchymatous area. NAC domain transcription factors and their interactions with abscisic acid may have provided the regulatory substrate for the developmental changes that led to the evolution of pith. Analytical methods such as, UV–Visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Photoluminescence (PL), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), were used to characterize the synthesized CQDs (SB and SBP). Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of CQDs SB and SBP were assessed. The synthesized CQDs SB and SBP have spherical morphology, as shown by HRTEM investigation, and with a particle size of about 5 nm. Using the brine shrimp lethality assay, the toxicity of CQDs SB and SBP were investigated at various doses. Through their ability to scavenge H 2 O 2 radicals, CQDs SB and SBP were studied with strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The quality of sawn wood is affected by the warping that it presents after drying, it is important then, to understand the mechanisms that regulate this deformation. Consequently, this work offers results of the influence of the variation and sawing patterns, dimensions and drying time of the pieces, on the warping of the sawn wood of Pinus caribaea var caribaea. The sawn pieces come from trees of the same origin, diameter and age. The study of the sawing variation was carried out with a methodology similar to that proposed Center of Forestry Studies, samples were taken with the same length and width but, of different thickness to every third of the selected piece. For the analysis of sawing schemes, sawn pieces were used taking into account the position of the medulla on the face, edge and center of the piece and pieces that do not contain it. The influence of the dimensions, were studied from taking pieces in different positions in radial direction with different dimensions (13 x100x3000) mm and (75x100x3000) mm were coded as: A, B and C by the distance to the medulla. Warpage measurements were made at 25, 60 and 90 days of drying. According to simple analysis of variance, the sawn pieces that experience less warpage are those that not contain medulla, those that do not experience variations in sawing, and those with greater thickness. In the production of chipboard from bagasse, a lot of waste is produced, most of which include pith. The waste is transferred to the outside of the factory at a great cost and energy level. Also, annually, a large amount of surplus bagasse of conversional Industries is obtained in Khuzestan agro-industries. These wastes cause many environmental and health problems, while these wastes can be used to generate energy. On the other hand, chipboard industries consume a lot of energy which is mostly fossil energy. Nowadays, in many sugarcane agro-industries in different countries, wastes are used to generate energy for sugar plants and conversional industries. Bagasse is often used as a primary fuel source for sugar mills. Materials and Methods: Current research is focused on the direct energy consumed in chipboard production from sugarcane bagasse and whether it can be provided by using residues and wastes of Debal Khozaie Agro-Industry Company. Data were collected from agro-industry companies as well as by sampling and measuring waste, input and energy consumption at the chipboard factory of Debal Khozaie. Direct energy consumed in the chipboard production from bagasse includes diesel fuel, electricity, natural gas, and labor. Input and output values of materials (bagasse, pith, etc.), and energy consumption (electricity, diesel, natural gas, etc.) were collected using both laboratory tests and data available in agro-industry. Potential of energy generation from bagasse, pith, wood chips, and straw in Debal Khozaie agro-industry, were considered by the direct burning method. Also, the potential of biogas production from vinasse in agro-industry for energy production was calculated. The moisture of bagasse (fresh bagasse, 24 hours, five days, 30 days, and 45 days after gathering), outdoor dried pith, outdoor dried straw and wood chip were measured based on the ASTM D2974 standard method in the laboratory. Ash percentage of bagasse, peat, straw, and Wood chips were measured using a furnace, desiccator and a scale. Also, the lower heating value of bagasse, straw, pith, and wood chips were measured using a calorimeter bomb. Results and Discussion: The direct energy consumption in the chipboard factory was determined to be 5.829 GJ m-3 of produced chipboard. Natural gas and electricity were the major sources of direct energy with 78.52% and 18.87% share, respectively. To replace these sources, pith and woodchips form chipboard factory, sugarcane leaves, remainder sugarcane bagasse, and vinasse from molasses-based Razi alcohol factory were considered. Properties of the substituted resources were determined including ash, moisture content, heating value (using bomb calorimeter), and amount of woodchips along with the biogas potential from anaerobic fermentation of vinasse. Results showed that woody residues from chipboard factory and Debal Khozaie Agro-Industry Company had the potential to provide 4.33 fold the energy provided by gas in the chipboard factory, considering the efficiency equal to 60%. Using the residues of the chipboard factory individually, it is possible to replace all the consumed natural gas and electricity energy needed in the chipboard factory as well. According to the volume of available vinasse, the potential biogas production from this resource estimated to be 8.82 Gm³. Conclusion: Electricity, natural gas, and diesel fuel constitute the direct energy consumed in the production of chipboard, and natural gas with 78.52% has the highest share. Electricity accounts for 18.87% of direct energy consumption. The specific energy of chipboard production at the chipboard factory was 5.829 GJ m-3. Only using the pith of chipboard factory can produce 2.85 times the total energy of natural gas consumed in chipboard factory. Investigation of the potential of biogas production from vinasse in Debal Khozaie agro-industry showed that it is possible to generate energy equivalent to 8824.3 thousand cubic meters of natural gas. Overall, the study showed that using the wastes of chipboard factory and sugarcane agro-industry has the potential to replace the entire natural gas and electricity consumption in chipboard factory. Out-of-grade pine timber is an abundant material resource that is underutilised because its mechanical properties are not well understood. Increasing trends toward shorter rotation times and fast-grown plantation pines around the world such as Pinus elliottii × P. caribaea var. hondurensis hybrid (PEE × PCH) mean low-stiffness corewood is becoming a larger portion of this out-of-grade population. This study characterised the modulus and strength properties in bending, compression parallel to grain (CParG) and compression perpendicular to grain (CPerpG), shear and tension strength of low-stiffness out-of-grade PEE × PCH. The effect of resin, knots and pith on these properties were also investigated. The results show that in clear wood, the MOE in bending, CParG, CPerpG and shear modulus are 6.9 GPa, 5.78 GPa, 0.27 GPa and 0.59 GPa, respectively, while strengths are 45.8 MPa, 29.4 MPa, 6.7 MPa, 5.7 MPa, respectively. The tensile strength is 32.4 MPa. Resin significantly increased density 45% higher than clear, but performed similar with the exception of CPerpG MOE and strength which were significantly different. Resin area ratio (RAR) has a moderate correlation with density with an R2 of 0.659 but low to no correlation for mechanical properties. Knots were significantly different to clear for all test types and within a range of 48% to 196%. Knots were high in CPerpG MOE and strength but lower for all other properties and had the largest negative impact on tensile strength. Knot area ratio (KAR) had low to moderate correlation with tension strength and CPerpG MOE with R2 of 0.48 and 0.35, respectively. Pith was within the range of 76% to 121% of non-pith samples for structural performance, some of which were significantly different, and pith samples were higher in density than non-pith. This new information is crucial for the effective establishment of grading rules, design optimisation and utilisation of low-stiffness out-of-grade PEE × PCH as a new material resource in civil engineering applications. Gleditsiae Spina, the thorn of Gleditsia sinensis Lam., has a long history of being used as a traditional medicine in East Asian countries. However, only a few biologically active substances have been identified from it. In this study, the epidermis, xylem and pith of Gleditsiae Spina, respectively Gs‐E, Gs‐X and Gs‐P, were studied. We used a widely targeted metabolomics method to investigate the chemical composition of Gs‐E, Gs‐X and Gs‐P. A total of 728 putative metabolites were identified from Gleditsiae Spina, including 211 primary metabolites and 517 secondary metabolites. These primary and secondary metabolites could be categorized into more than 10 different classes. Flavonoids, phenolic acids, lipids, amino acids and derivatives, and organic acids constituted the main metabolite groups. Multivariate statistical analysis showed that the Gs‐E, Gs‐X and Gs‐P samples could be clearly separated. Differential accumulated metabolite (DAM) analysis revealed that more than half of the DAMs exhibited the highest relative concentrations in Gs‐E, and most of the DAMs showed the lowest relative concentrations in Gs‐X. Moreover, 11 common differential primary metabolites and 79 common differential secondary metabolites were detected in all comparison groups. Premise: Wood density is a crucial plant functional trait related to plant life history strategies. Its ecological importance in small‐stature growth forms (e.g., shrubs) has not been extensively examined. Given that hydraulic conduit dimensions vary positively with plant height and that there is a negative relationship between conduits' diameter and wood density, I hypothesized an also negative relationship between wood density and plant height. Knowing that bark and pith proportions are significant in small‐diameter stems, I additionally disentangled the contribution of wood, bark, and pith to stem density. Methods: I determined density in small‐diameter stems across 153 species spanning all major angiosperm and gymnosperm orders by considering a diversity of growth forms (trees, treelets, shrubs, vines, and hemiparasites). Stem cross sections were dissected to consider the densities of wood with bark and pith; wood with pith and without bark; wood with bark and no pith; and wood without bark and pith. Secondary growth was also measured. Results: Trees showed similar wood densities as non‐self‐supporting vines, and both showed significantly less dense wood than treelets, shrubs, and hemiparasites. General comparisons showed that wood was significantly denser than all other tissues, and these differences did not depend on growth form. Wood density was significantly and negatively related to growth rate and pith area proportions but not to bark thickness proportion. Conclusions: An implicit negative relationship between maximum plant height and stem density emerges as a property of plants likely linked to hydraulic conductive size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cold hardiness evaluation is important for screening woody species in cold areas. We compared cold hardiness by estimating the 50% lethal temperature (LT50) using electrolyte leakage test (ELLT50) and triphenyltetrazolium chloride test (TTCLT50) for 26 woody species in the Bashang region of China. One-year-old shoots were collected in January and exposed to five subfreezing temperatures in a programmable temperature and humidity chamber. LT50 was estimated by fitting relative electrolyte leakage and percentage of dead tissue against test temperature. For all tested species, triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining of the pith was weak and the cambium TTCLT50 was lower than the extreme minimum temperature (−37 °C) recorded in the region. The cambium TTCLT50 and the sd were lower than that for the phloem and xylem. The phloem TTCLT50 was lower than the xylem TTCLT50, and the two sds were similar. The ELLT50 showed no significant correlation with any TTCLT50. For most species, the ELLT50 was higher than the cambium and phloem TTCLT50 and was not significant different with the xylem TTCLT50. The ELLT50 showed higher sd than any tissue TTCLT50. Based on results obtained in this study, when choosing cold hardiness of single stem tissue as an indicator for screening woody species, the xylem should be considered first, followed by the phloem; the cambium and pith were unsuitable. The cold hardiness estimated by ELLT50 was more suitable as indicator for screening woody species than that of stem tissue in winter estimated by TTCLT50.

Summary: Plants have developed tissue‐specific defense strategies in response to various herbivores with different feeding habits. Although defense responses to leaf‐chewing insects have been well studied, little is known about stem‐specific responses, particularly in the pith, to stem‐boring herbivores.To understand the stem‐specific defense, we first conducted a comparative transcriptomic analysis of the wild tobacco Nicotiana attenuata before and after attack by the leaf‐chewing herbivore Manduca sexta and the stem borer Trichobaris mucorea. When the stem‐boring herbivore attacked, lignin‐associated genes were upregulated specifically in the inner parenchymal cells of the stem, the pith; lignin also accumulated highly in the attacked pith. Silencing the lignin biosynthetic gene cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase enhanced the performance of the stem‐boring herbivore but had no effect on the growth of the leaf‐chewing herbivore.Two‐dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance results revealed that lignified pith contains feruloyltyramine as an unusual lignin component in the cell wall, as a response against stem‐boring herbivore attack. Pith‐specific lignification induced by the stem‐boring herbivore was modulated by both jasmonate and ethylene signaling.These results suggest that lignin provides a stem‐specific inducible barrier, protecting plants against stem‐boring insects. Improvements on energy density of loose biomass such as sugarcane feedstock is crucial in the technology of biomass energy conversion and generation. South Africa is one of the producers and refiners of sugarcane. High energy density of sugarcane bagasse biomass through separation and briquetting is imperative in developing adequate streams and quality energy generation from sugarcane upstream milling processes. Unseparated bagasse and separated fractions of fiber and pith possess energy contents of about: 16.14 MJ/kg, 17.73 MJ/kg and 15.74 MJ/kg respectively. Fiber fractions have high energy content than bagasse and pith which demonstrates that pith fraction from bagasse lowers energy density. However, the use of starch and PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) as binders during briquetting contributed no significant difference in the overall energy density of the biomass briquettes produced. In the same vein, the addition of 50% charcoal as the hybrid component significantly improves the energy density and the physical properties of briquettes, biomass fractions of bagasse, fiber and pith to: 19.43 MJ/kg, 19.57 MJ/kg and 18.37 MJ/kg respectively. Fiber fraction remains the biomass fraction with highest energy content as compared to other fractions. After briquetting and drying of briquettes to moisture content below 12%, there was a significant improvement on the burning rate, briquetting, binder, hybridization which does improve the biomass briquettes characteristics. Separation of bagasse is crucial under certain conditions since there are no significance differences in the energy density of bagasse fractions. Sugar beet is grown there as an annual crop from spring to autumn because of the damaging effect of freezing temperatures to taproot tissue. A collection of hybrid and non-hybrid sugar beet cultivars was tested for winter survival rates and freezing tolerance. Three genotypes with either low or high winter survival rates were selected for detailed study of their response to frost. These genotypes differed in the severity of frost injury in a defined inner region in the upper part of the taproot, the so-called pith. We aimed to elucidate genotype- and tissue-dependent molecular processes during freezing and combined analyses of sugar beet anatomy and physiology with transcriptomic and metabolite profiles of leaf and taproot tissues at low temperatures. Freezing temperatures induced strong downregulation of photosynthesis in leaves, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and ROS-related gene expression in taproots. Simultaneously, expression of genes involved in raffinose metabolism, as well as concentrations of raffinose and its intermediates, increased markedly in both leaf and taproot tissue at low temperatures. The accumulation of raffinose in the pith tissue correlated with freezing tolerance of the three genotypes. The stele concept is one of the oldest enduring concepts in plant biology. Here, I review the history of the concept and build an argument for an updated view of steles and their evolution. Studies of stelar organization have generated a widely ranging array of definitions that determine the way we classify steles and construct scenarios about the evolution of stelar architecture. Because at the organismal level biological evolution proceeds by changes in development, concepts of structure need to be grounded in development to be relevant in an evolutionary perspective. For the stele, most traditional definitions that incorporate development have viewed it as the totality of tissues that either originate from procambium – currently the prevailing view – or are bordered by a boundary layer (e.g. endodermis). Consensus between these two perspectives can be reached by recasting the stele as a structural entity of dual nature. Following a brief review of the history of the stele concept, basic terminology related to stelar organization, and traditional classifications of the steles, I revisit boundary layers from the perspective of histogenesis as a dynamic mosaic of developmental domains. I review anatomical and molecular data to explore and reaffirm the importance of boundary layers for stelar organization. Drawing on information from comparative anatomy, developmental regulation, and the fossil record, I propose a stele concept that integrates both the boundary layer and the procambial perspectives, consistent with a dual nature of the stele. This dual stele model posits that stelar architecture is determined at the apical meristem by two major cell fate specification events: a first one that specifies a provascular domain and its boundaries, and a second event that specifies a procambial domain (which will mature into conducting tissues) from cell subpopulations of the provascular domain. If the position and extent of the developmental domains defined by the two events are determined by different concentrations of the same morphogen (most likely auxin), then the distribution of this organizer factor in the shoot apical meristem, as modulated by changes in axis size and the effect of lateral organs, can explain the different stelar configurations documented among tracheophytes. This model provides working hypotheses that incorporate assumptions and generate implications that can be tested empirically. The model also offers criteria for an updated classification of steles in line with current understanding of plant development. In this classification, steles fall into two major categories determined by the configuration of boundary layers: boundary protosteles and boundary siphonosteles, each with subtypes defined by the architecture of the vascular tissues. Validation of the dual stele model and, more generally, in‐depth understanding of the regulation of stelar architecture, will necessitate targeted efforts in two areas: (i) the regulation of procambium, vascular tissue, and boundary layer specification in all extant vascular plants, considering that most of the diversity in stelar architecture is hosted by seed‐free plants, which are the least explored in terms of developmental regulation; (ii) the configuration of vascular tissues and, especially, boundary layers, in as many extinct lineages as possible. This paper investigated the radial variations of acoustical and mechanical properties of date palm from the pith to the bark. Cubic samples with dimensions of 2×2×35 cm3 (Radial× tangential ×longitudinal)) were taken in distance of 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 cm toward the bark. To evaluate dynamical properties of date palm, flexural vibration method was applied on cubic experimental samples. Further the specimen then were utilized for measuring MOE and MOR in static bending test. More details were also attained by anatomical analyzes. The results showed that the acoustical parameters of the propagated wave (the internal friction, the acoustic conversion efficiency as well as the acoustical impedance) were constant while increasing the distance between pith and bark. The highest values of acoustic coefficients found for samples near the pith and partially increased while moving to the bark. The density variations were less important in radial direction of date palm disk. The MOE and MOR values significantly radially varied and were maximum for samples in distance 3 cm. As they reached to the distance of 15 cm from the center, the given parameters dramatically decreased. Finally it can be conclude that the quality assessment of date palm based on the acoustical parameters is not reliable. It is suggested to provide samples from the outer parts of date palm disk when construction materials need more strength.

Sorghum stems comprise different tissue components, i.e., rind, pith, and vascular bundles in the rind and pith regions, of different cell morphologies and cell wall characteristics. The overall responses of stems to mechanical loadings depend on the responses of these tissues themselves. Investigating how each tissue deforms to various loading conditions will inform us of the failure mechanisms in sorghum stems when exposed to wind loadings, which can guide the development of lodging-resistant variants. To this end, numerical analyses were implemented to investigate the effects of cell morphologies and cell wall properties on the overall mechanical responses of the above four tissues under tension and compression. Microstructures of different tissues were constructed from microscopic images of the tissues using computer-aided design (CAD), which were then used for finite element (FE) analyses. Shell finite elements were used to model the cell walls, and the classical lamination model was used to determine the overall mechanical responses of cell walls having different fiber composite arrangements. The results from the numerical analyses helped explain how the loading (boundary) conditions, the cell microstructures, the mechanical properties of cell walls of different tissues, the cell wall thickness, the microfibril angle (MFA) of fiber composites of the cell walls, and the turgor pressure affected the overall mechanical responses of the tissues. Tissue stiffening or softening behaviors were attributed to different microstructural deformations, i.e., local or global buckling of cell walls, cell collapse, densifications of cells, or reorientation and rearrangement of cells. The mechanical properties and thickness of cell walls only affected the stiffness and load-bearing ability of the tissues. The turgor pressure affected the compressive responses but its effect on tensile responses was negligible. The MFA had a significant influence on the stiffness and load-bearing ability when the tissues were loaded along their longitudinal axis, but it had an insignificant effect on loading in the transverse direction. Tissues with smaller cell sizes and denser cells were stronger and stiffer than those with larger cell sizes. The numerical simulations also revealed that rind and rind vascular bundles were stiffer and had higher load-bearing ability than pith and pith vascular bundles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The data performance for structural usage of highly engineered wood is very useful, however, the lacking of the data is very much concern for fast-growing indigenous timber species in timber engineering field. In correlation with that, the strength properties behaviour of Endospermum diadenum has to be studied to analyse the distribution pattern of strength properties at a different distance from the vortex also known as pith. The species have been obtained from the East Campus of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s forest reserve. Strength properties test were carried out namely, static bending (modulus of rupture – MOR and modulus of elasticity – MOE), and the compressive strength (compression stress parallel to grain). Meanwhile, physical properties test was carried out namely, moisture content (MC) and density. Small specimens measuring 20 x 20 mm were tested in green and dry conditions in accordance with British Standard, BS 373:1957 (British Standards Institution, 1957). The green condition refers to moisture content greater than 19 percent and dry condition with moisture content less than or equal 19 percent. All the results that had been tested were analyzed using statistical analysis as mean results. The strength properties of specimen increased from the pith towards the sapwood in which the strength is the lowest at 25 mm from pith followed by 50 mm, and the highest is at 75 mm from the pith. Distribution of the basic density also increases slightly from the pith towards the sapwood with a significant increment in average mean value at 25 mm from vortex with 0.54 g/cm3, 0.62 g/cm3 at 50 mm and 0.66 g/cm3 at 75 mm from the vortex. Meanwhile, for dry condition, the increases in average mean value with 0.425 g/cm3 at 25 mm, 0.427 g/cm3 at 50 mm and 0.47 g/cm3 at 75 mm from the vortex. Background Sweet sorghum bagasse (SSB), comprising both a dermal layer and pith, is a solid waste generated by agricultural activities. Open burning was previously used to treat agricultural solid waste but is harmful to the environment and human health. Recent reports showed that certain techniques can convert this agricultural waste into valuable products. While SSB has been considered an attractive raw material for sugar extraction and the production of value-added products, the pith root in the SSB can be difficult to process. Therefore, it is necessary to pretreat bagasse before conventional hydrolysis. Methods A thorough analysis and comparison of various pretreatment methods were conducted based on physicochemical and microscopic approaches. The responses of agricultural SSB stem pith with different particle sizes to pretreatment temperature, acid and alkali concentration and enzyme dosage were investigated to determine the optimal pretreatment. The integrated methods are beneficial to the utilization of carbohydrate-based and unknown compounds in agricultural solid waste. Results Acid (1.5−4.5%, v/v) and alkali (5−8%, w/v) reagents were used to collect cellulose from different meshes of pith at 25–100 °C. The results showed that the use of 100 mesh pith soaked in 8% (w/v) NaOH solution at 100 °C resulted in 32.47% ± 0.01% solid recovery. Follow-up fermentation with 3% (v/v) acid and 6.5% (w/v) alkali at 50 °C for enzymolysis was performed with the optimal enzyme ratio. An analysis of the surface topography and porosity before and after pretreatment showed that both the pore size of the pith and the amount of exposed cellulose increased as the mesh size increased. Interestingly, various compounds, including 42 compounds previously known to be present and 13 compounds not previously known to be present, were detected in the pretreatment liquid, while 10 types of monosaccharides, including D-glucose, D-xylose and D-arabinose, were found in the enzymatic solution. The total monosaccharide content of the pith was 149.48 ± 0.3 mg/g dry matter. Discussion An integrated technique for obtaining value-added products from sweet sorghum pith is presented in this work. Based on this technique, lignin and hemicellulose were effectively broken down, amorphous cellulose was obtained and all sugars in the sweet sorghum pith were hydrolysed into monosaccharides. A total of 42 compounds previously found in these materials, including alcohol, ester, acid, alkene, aldehyde ketone, alkene, phenolic and benzene ring compounds, were detected in the pretreatment pith. In addition, several compounds that had not been previously observed in these materials were found in the pretreatment solution. These findings will improve the transformation of lignocellulosic biomass into sugar to create a high-value-added coproduct during the integrated process and to maximize the potential utilization of agricultural waste in current biorefinery processing.

Aims: Low-vigour scion cultivars and dwarfing rootstocks are a significant contributing factor to the success of modern temperate orchard systems. Planting density and canopy efficiency are currently limited in macadamia by a lack of low-vigour cultivars and rootstocks. The relationships between xylem vessel diameter, hydraulic conductivity and vigour are implicated in dwarf cultivars and low-vigour rootstocks of peach and apple. This study aims to determine relationships between vessel anatomy and tree-scale vigour in subtropical macadamia, to stimulate the development of low vigour cultivars and dwarfing rootstocks. Methods: Stem sections from the most recent mature flush were collected from five replicates of three macadamia cultivars: 'D4' (high vigour), 'B25' (intermediate vigour) and 'B63' (low vigour). Sections were imaged under a fluorescence microscope in order to measure the number and size of all xylem vessels in the stem. Results: The three cultivars showed distinct differences in height over 5 years of measurement (P < 0.001). Change in tree height related to the xylem vessel characteristics of mean vessel area of the ten largest vessels per section (R2 = 0.57, P < 0.001), pith size (R2 = 0.70, P < 0.001) and total additive vessel area (R2 = 0.41, P < 0.01). Conclusions: This study indicates that relationships between anatomical structure and vigour in macadamia are likely to be similar to those of well-studied temperate tree crops and that anatomical traits may be useful in the selection of low-vigour cultivars. Little is known about the mechanisms underlying the development of bamboo culm. Using anatomical, mathematical modeling, and genomics methods, we investigated the role of shoot apical meristem (SAM) in the development of the transverse morphology of bamboo culm and explored the underlying cellular and molecular processes. We discovered that maintenance of SAM morphology that can produce circular culm and increase in SAM cell numbers, especially corpus cells, is the means by which bamboo makes a larger culm with a regular pith cavity and culm wall during development. A less cellular form of SAM with a lower proportion of corpus cells causes an abnormal higher ratio of wall component cells to pith cells, which breaks the balance of their interaction and triggers the random invasion of wall component cells into pith tissues during development, and finally results in the various thick culm walls of Phyllostachys nidularia f. farcta. The smaller SAM also results in a lower level of hormones such as cytokinin and auxin, and down-regulates hormone signaling and the downstream functional genes such as those related to metabolism, which finally results in a dwarf and smaller diameter culm with lower biomass. These results provide an important perspective on the culm development of bamboo, and support a plausible mechanism causing the size-reduced culm and various thick culm walls of P. nidularia f. farcta. An investigation was carried out in the years 2006-2008 in order to compare the chemical composition of sweet sorghum stems. Two varieties of sweet sorghum: Sucrosorgo G-1990 (photoperiodically sensitive -- headless) and Sucrosorgo 506 (photoperiodically insensitive -- headed) were tested. Samples of large and small diameter stems were collected from both types of sorghum, from different parts of stem (lower, medium and top internodes). Each internode was fractionated into three stem part: leaves, the outer (rind) and the inner part (pith). The effect of the part of a stem and the place from which internodes were collected on the chemical composition was determined. The content of crude fibre and its fractions: neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), hemicellulose, crude proteins, carbohydrates: total carbohydrates, sucrose, reducing sugars and macroelements was determined in the plant material. The largest diversity in proportions of the chemical compounds was observed in the pith. Amounts of the NDF fraction in the rind depended on a stem's diameter. The site from where an internode sample was collected had the greatest effect on the chemical composition, mostly the concentrations of macroelements (N, P -- in all three stem parts, K and Mg -- in the pith, Ca -- in leaves and the rind, Na -- in leaves). The diameter of a stem had a negative effect on the chemical composition and deteriorated the technological value of sorghum, since the content of crude fibre and its fraction increased. Phosphorous, in the form of phosphate, is a key element in the nutrition of all living beings. In nature, it is present in the form of phosphate salts, organophosphates, and phosphonates. Bacteria transport inorganic phosphate by the high affinity phosphate transport system PstSCAB, and the low affinity PitH transporters. The PstSCAB system consists of four components. PstS is the phosphate binding protein and discriminates between arsenate and phosphate. In the Streptomyces species, the PstS protein, attached to the outer side of the cell membrane, is glycosylated and released as a soluble protein that lacks its phosphate binding ability. Transport of phosphate by the PstSCAB system is drastically regulated by the inorganic phosphate concentration and mediated by binding of phosphorylated PhoP to the promoter of the PstSCAB operon. In Mycobacterium smegmatis, an additional high affinity transport system, PhnCDE, is also under PhoP regulation. Additionally, Streptomyces have a duplicated low affinity phosphate transport system encoded by the pitH1–pitH2 genes. In this system phosphate is transported as a metal-phosphate complex in simport with protons. Expression of pitH2, but not that of pitH1 in Streptomyces coelicolor, is regulated by PhoP. Interestingly, in many Streptomyces species, three gene clusters pitH1–pstSCAB–ppk (for a polyphosphate kinase), are linked in a supercluster formed by nine genes related to phosphate metabolism. Glycerol-3-phosphate may be transported by the actinobacteria Corynebacterium glutamicum that contains a ugp gene cluster for glycerol-3-P uptake, but the ugp cluster is not present in Streptomyces genomes. Sugar phosphates and nucleotides are used as phosphate source by the Streptomyces species, but there is no evidence of the uhp gene involved in the transport of sugar phosphates. Sugar phosphates and nucleotides are dephosphorylated by extracellular phosphatases and nucleotidases. An isolated uhpT gene for a hexose phosphate antiporter is present in several pathogenic corynebacteria, such as Corynebacterium diphtheriae, but not in non-pathogenic ones. Phosphonates are molecules that contains phosphate linked covalently to a carbon atom through a very stable C–P bond. Their utilization requires the phnCDE genes for phosphonates/phosphate transport and genes for degradation, including those for the subunits of the C–P lyase. Strains of the Arthrobacter and Streptomyces genera were reported to degrade simple phosphonates, but bioinformatic analysis reveals that whole sets of genes for putative phosphonate degradation are present only in three Arthrobacter species and a few Streptomyces species. Genes encoding the C–P lyase subunits occur in several Streptomyces species associated with plant roots or with mangroves, but not in the laboratory model Streptomyces species; however, the phnCDE genes that encode phosphonates/phosphate transport systems are frequent in Streptomyces species, suggesting that these genes, in the absence of C–P lyase genes, might be used as surrogate phosphate transporters. In summary, Streptomyces and related actinobacteria seem to be less versatile in phosphate transport systems than Enterobacteria.

Introduction Ensiling is one of the common preserving methods for forage or other organic materials. In this method, organic matters were preserved by proving an aerobic condition and then by reducing the pH with increasing acids production (mainly lactic acid). Some circumstances like enough soluble carbohydrates, low buffering capacity and appropriate dry matter concentration are needed in ensilages for an ideal silage production. Seepage production during ensiling is one of the most problems especially when high moisture materials (like fresh beet sugar pulp) are ensiled. Silage seepage can pollute the environment and make loses in nutrients like soluble carbohydrates, protein, organic acids and etc. Moreover, lactic acid bacteria inoculants (Mainly consist of Lactobacillus plantarum) have been widely used for improving fermentation pattern in ensilages. These external provided bacteria usually enhance lactic acid production in silage and then accelerate the falling of pH values in silages. Rapid decrease in pH can inhibit non-beneficial bacteria from activity which finally preserves nutrients from un-necessary fermentation or oxidation. The aim of this study was to investigate the interactive effects of lactic acid bacteria inoculants and some absorbents (straw and pith) on chemical properties and fermentation profile of wet sugar beet pulp silage. Materials and Methods In the first experiment, fresh wet sugar beet pulp was treated with 5% straw or 5% pith in order to investigate the effects of these absorbents on chemical composition, fermentation characteristics and effluent production during ensiling period. In the second experiment, fresh wet sugar beet pulp was treated with a commercial lactic acid bacteria inoculants (Ecosyle) and/or 5% pith in order to investing the main and interaction effects of the bacterial bacteria inoculants and the best absorbents from the experiment 1. In both experiments, triplicate samples were prepared for each treatment after mixing the fresh sugar beet pulp with absorbents or inoculants. Ensilages were filled in laboratory silos and packed and then were kept for 90 d in room temperature at dark. After opening the concentration of volatile and non-volatile fatty acids, crude protein, fibers, total and ammonia-N and the values of pH were measured in final produced silages. Results and Discussion In the experiment 1, concentration of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent insoluble fibers (NDF) and acid detergent insoluble fibers were higher in absorbents treated silage (P>0.01) when compared with untreated one. Application of absorbents resulted in silages with lower seepages (P>0.01) production compared to the control. However, application of the absorbents to the beet pulp produced silages with lower in vitro DM digestibility (P>0.05). Straw treated silage had the highest NDF concentration and the lowest apparent and true in vitro DM digestibility. Application of absorbents produced silages with lower lactic acid (P>0.01) and higher pH (P> 0.05) and ammonia-N (P>0.01) concentration. Adding straw to sugar beet pulp produced silages with higher acetate concentration, total volatile fatty acids concentrations (VFA) (P> 0.01), the ratio of ammonia-N from total N (P>0.01) but lower ratios of lactate to acetate (P>0.01), lactate to acetate + propionate (P>0.01) and lactate to VFA (P>0.05) when compared with control group. In contrast, adding pith to sugar beet pulp produced silages with lower acetate concentration (P>0.01), propionate concentration (P>0.01), total VFA (P> 0.01) but higher ratios of lactate to acetate (P> 0.01), lactate to acetate + propionate (P> 0.01) and lactate to VFA (P>0.05) when compared with control group. The Fleig point was not affected by the different treatments. Application of bacterial inoculant resulted in silages with higher DM concentration (P>0.01), water soluble carbohydrates concentration (P> 0.01) and in vitro DM digestibility (P>0.05) but lower crude protein concentration (P>0.05). Moreover, Application of bacterial inoculant resulted in silages with higher butyric acid concentration (P>0.01), VFA concentration (P>0.01), ammonia-N concentration (P>0.01) and Fleig point (P>0.01) but lower pH values (P>0.01). Simultaneous application of bacterial inoculant and straw to sugar beet pulp silage resulted in silages with lower concentrations of lactic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, total VFA but higher Fleig point. Conclusion Finally, according to homolactic fermentation, lower ammonia-N and less negative effect on digestibility in pith in comparison with straw and bacterial inoculant, it is suggest that to use 5% pith for treating sugar beet pulp prior to ensiling.

In this research microscopic properties of wood near the pith to bark in Dalbergia sissoo was investigated. For this reason 3 stands of 10 years old Dalbergia sissoo trees from ShoshDanial area in Khozestan province were selected and cut. For measuring fiber biometrics of samples, from each trees one disc and from each disc 10 pell in match's size segregated and tested. Segregation of fibers was done with Franklin method. Also microscopic segments of wood near the pith and bark were studied with light microscope. The results showed that the length, total and lumen diameter, and thickness of cell wall are significantly different and this values were increased from pith to bark. Ray widths and vessel diameters in wood near the pith and bark were 36.15, 132.98 and 31.82, 98.26 µm respectively and showed a significant difference in the level of 5%. The average number of vessels and the number of rays in wood near the pith and bark were 3.46, 7.20 and 3.54, 6.68 number respectively. Also ray length means in wood near the pith and bark were 130.86 and 132.05µm respectively and didn’t show a significant difference in the level of 5%.

Abstract: The weight share of the pith, nodes and internodes in the stalks of Miscanthus, as well as the types of cells in these anatomical parts, were examined. Studies have shown that the pith contains mainly parenchyma cells, nodes—short fibres and palisade parenchyma cells, while internodes contains mainly fibres, which are accompanied by a certain amount of vessels and parenchyma cells. Then the whole stalks of Miscanthus were subjected to pulping using the kraft and soda pulping methods. These studies have shown that hard, regular, soft and very soft kraft pulps can be obtained using a lower amount of active alkali, with comparable or higher screened yield of pulp than is the case of pulping of birch. Furthermore, it was found that the content of knots and shives was lower in the digester hard and regular kraft pulps from Miscanthus compared to birch kraft pulp. Of the two pulping methods studied, kraft pulping gives better results than soda pulping concerning the considerably higher yield of pulp.Graphical abstract: [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of iodine (I: 0, 11.8, and 23.6 mM), silicon (Si: 0, 0.5, and 1.0 mM), and vanadium (V: 0, 10, and 20 µM) on sugarcane varieties CP 72-2086, Mex 79-431, and Mex 69-290 was evaluated in a completely randomized experimental design. Two foliar sprays were applied: the first one at an age of 8 months and the second at 9 months. Plant height and stem diameter were evaluated between 2 and 3 months after the second foliar spray. Flowering, cavity, and pith formation were evaluated 3 months after the second foliar spray. The 23.6 mM I concentration decreased plant height and stem diameter in Mex 69-290 by 65 and 25%, respectively, in comparison with the control. Si increased growth in all varieties, with the highest height observed in CP 72-2086 treated with 1.0 mM Si (an increase from 7 cm in the control to 44.7 cm in 1.0 mM Si-treated plants). Application of 20 µM V significantly increased plant height in all three varieties, from 5 cm in the control to at least 22 cm in V-treated plants. V at 10 and 20 µM inhibited flowering and pith formation in CP 72-2086, while in Mex 79-431, flowering and pith formation were inhibited by both 10 µM V and 1.0 mM Si. Application of 11.8 mM I decreased flowering and pith by 80% in CP 72-2086. Cavity increased in CP 72-2086 and Mex 69-290, especially when using the highest concentrations of I, Si, and V. There is a growing need for nondestructively evaluate the integrity of trees and wooden structural elements. Such an investigation can be performed with the use of different test methods. Nevertheless, in order to yield acceptable results, the test methods should consider the anisotropic nature of the wood, which includes the shape of the annual rings, and also the pith location in the cross-section. The purpose of this study was to compare thermal and mechanical properties of different materials based on vegetal aggregates and clay in order to characterize the performances of four different biocomposites with a view to valorizing agricultural waste. The samples analyzed were manufactured with four different plant-based aggregates (rape straw, sunflower bark, sunflower pith and a mix of sunflower pith and bark) at a same binder/aggregate ratio. These materials revealed a wide range of densities and thermo-mechanical properties. The wood density is one of the most important property, and it is used as the main indicator for several types of use. However, this parameter can vary substantially along the stem, either in the bottom-top or pith-bark direction. Its determination becomes essential for the qualification of the wood of any forest species. This study aimed to evaluate the radial and axial variation the Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze wood density under different ages. Twelve trees with 23, 25, 28 and 30 years were felled. Discs were collected from 10%, 35%, 55% and 75% of tree height and another - from 1.3 m above ground level. From each disc three samples were taken from different positions in radial direction for density determination: near pith, central region and near bark. The data performance for structural usage of highly engineered wood is very useful, however, the lacking of the data is very much concern for fast-growing indigenous timber species in timber engineering field. In correlation with that, the strength properties behaviour of Endospermum diadenum has to be studied to analyse the distribution pattern of strength properties at a different distance from the vortex also known as pith. The species have been obtained from the East Campus of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak's forest reserve. Strength properties test were carried out namely, static bending (modulus of rupture - MOR and modulus of elasticity - MOE), and the compressive strength (compression stress parallel to grain). Meanwhile, physical properties test was carried out namely, moisture content (MC) and density. Small specimens measuring 20 x 20 mm were tested in green and dry conditions in accordance with British Standard, BS 373:1957 (British Standards Institution, 1957). The green condition refers to moisture content greater than 19 percent and dry condition with moisture content less than or equal 19 percent. All the results that had been tested were analyzed using statistical analysis as mean results. The strength properties of specimen increased from the pith towards the sapwood in which the strength is the lowest at 25 mm from pith followed by 50 mm, and the highest is at 75 mm from the pith. Distribution of the basic density also increases slightly from the pith towards the sapwood with a significant increment in average mean value at 25 mm from vortex with 0.54 g/cm3, 0.62 g/cm3 at 50 mm and 0.66 g/cm3 at 75 mm from the vortex. Meanwhile, for dry condition, the increases in average mean value with 0.425 g/cm3 at 25 mm, 0.427 g/cm3 at 50 mm and 0.47 g/cm3 at 75 mm from the vortex. The recalcitrance in grasses varies according to cell type and tissue. In this study, dilute acid pretreatment was performed on Miscanthus × giganteus internodes that include rind and pith regions which showing heterogeneous structural and chemical changes. Pretreatment on pith effectively hydrolyzed 73.33% hemicelluloses and separated cohesive cell walls from the compound middle lamella due to lignin migration. Lignin droplets with an average diameter of 49.5 ± 29.3 nm were concurrently coalesced on wall surface, that in turn exposed more microfibrils deep in walls to be enzymatically hydrolyzed reaching 82.55%. By contrast, the rind with a relatively intergrated cell structure was covered by larger lignin droplets (101.2 ± 44.1 nm) and filled with inaccessible microfibrils limiting enzymatic sacchrification (31.50%). Taken together, the cellulose digestibility of biomass was not majorly influenced by cellulose crystallinity, while it was strongly correlated with the positive effects of hemicelluloses degradation, lignin redistribution, cellulose exposure and loosening cell wall structure. Two new steroidal ketones (1, 2), together with 10 known steroids (3–12) and five known steroidal saponins (13–17), have been obtained from the pitch of Tetrapanax papyrierus. The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated as 3β-hydroxystigmast-8, 22-diene-7,11-dione and 3β-hydroxystigmast-8-ene-7,11-dione by IR, HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR techniques. This research was performed to investigate fiber biometrical properties (length, diameter and fiber thickness) of hornbeam species from Astara in Iran. Initially, disks were prepared with three trees of hornbeam species and then fiber isolation was carried out using Franklin method. Length, diameter and wall thickness of fiber provided were determined by laboratory microscope using eye scaled lens. The measurement of fiber dimensions was made at the pith region and at the distances of 2,6,12 and 15 centimeters and four geographical sides. The results indicated that length, diameter and wall thickness of fiber increased significantly with enhance of distance from pith. The highest fiber length, diameter and wall thickness obtained were 1.509 mm, 23.93 µm and 3.897 µm, respectively. The consequences attained from changing of fiber dimensions at various distances from pith to bark indicated that fiber dimensions change decreased by increase in distance from pith up to 15 cm and the highest change of fiber was observed at distance of 2-6 cm from pith. The results of measuring the fiber dimensions at various geographical sides didn't indicate any significant deference between the values of fiber length, diameter and wall thickness at 1% level of probability. The combined effects of distance from pith and different geographical sides also did not show any significant deference on fiber dimensions.

• Strawberry firmness decreased toward the end of the harvesting season (from winter to spring). • Predictive models for firmness were developed using environmental and fruit property data. • Input data for the predictive models consisted of only four or six variables. • Predictive models consisted a low predictive error (0.06 as relative root mean square error). • Models are an easy method to predict fruit firmness without using costly equipment. Firmness is an important quality factor in strawberries. We investigated the tissue-dependent seasonal variation in strawberry firmness in epidermis, cortex, and pith tissues, and also developed statistical predictive models for the seasonal changes in firmness using environmental conditions and fruit properties. The experiment was conducted at three locations (sites A, B, and C) and in different harvesting seasons from winter (December) to spring (May) during 2 years. The fruit properties, including the total soluble solids (TSS), acidity, and fruit surface color decreased toward the end of the season (from winter to spring), with fruit harvested in April and May having the lowest values at all research sites. Similarly, the epidermis firmness decreased 0.73-fold toward the end of the season at all the research sites. The cortex firmness of site A showed a marked decrease of 0.64-fold toward the end of the season, but that of sites B and C remained at constant levels. The pith firmness tended to be higher for fruit harvested in December than in other months. We tested the training dataset using the stepwise multiple linear regression analysis to construct the statistical predictive models of firmness. The goodness-of-fit of the firmness predictive models, shown by the adjusted square correlation coefficient, was 0.47–0.54 in the model using the input data for daily mean environmental conditions several days before harvest as well as fruit properties, including fruit weight, color, and TSS. Additionally, in the regression analysis between predicted and actual values, the predictive models demonstrated accurate high performance with a low predictive error (0.06 as relative root mean square error). Thus, we concluded that strawberry firmness shows seasonal variation within the epidermis and pith tissues, and that their predictive models were of adequate accuracy and usefulness without the need for time-consuming, costly measurement equipment. Capparis decidua a medicinal shrub belonging to the family Capparaceae , grows abundantly in wild regions of Asia, Africa, and Saudi Arabia. Due to its medicinal and nutritional value, a study on anatomical and physiological adaptations under various desert habitats was conducted. Results revealed that plants in saline areas showed significant anatomical and physiological modifications particularly in stem and roots show better survival under the harsh saline conditions of the desert. It was noted that the root epidermis thickness was not affected in a slightly saline environment as it showed no significant increasing or decreasing trend in the cross-section of the plant population from non-saline to slightly saline (p > 0.05) while it increased significantly in plants growing at highly saline (p < 0.05). Whereas endodermis cell area differs significantly between plants growing at all selected study sites it increased continuously with a rise in the salinity level of the soil (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, water storage capacity and reduction of water loss in the stem area, epidermis, and sclerenchyma were also recorded. In a highly saline environment, results intimate the deduction of photosynthetic pigments, an increase in total soluble proteins, total free amino acids, total soluble sugars, and proline, and a rise in stem and root tissue Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Cl− contents and meanwhile, accumulation of secondary metabolites (Phenolics and flavonoids). These anatomical and physiological adaptations in natural populations appear to be very important for their better survival in a harsh saline desert environment. The development and application of bio-based insulation materials can contribute to the minimization of the environmental impacts of buildings through reduction of embodied and in-use energy demand, in addition to many other major impacts such as resource depletion and waste generation. The hygrothermal performance of natural building materials has direct and indirect impacts on moderating indoor environmental conditions and can contribute to energy savings provided that such aspects are taken into account during the design and construction phases. This requires in-depth knowledge of the thermal and hygroscopic properties of the materials and their dependence on the moisture content. In this paper, the hygrothermal properties of six insulation materials is determined; four are commercially available materials while the other two are experimental materials based on crop by-products and natural binders. The influence of relative humidity on such properties is analysed. Moreover, the experimental Moisture Buffer Values are obtained for the six insulations, according to the protocol of the standard ISO 24353. Finally, a mass and heat coupled model is numerically solved to simulate this protocol for two of the materials, obtaining a good agreement with the experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The incorporation of natural fibres in earth construction elements is a common practice that is found both in traditional and in contemporary building systems. The positive effect that such materials have on the mechanical properties of the clay mixtures has been established in previous research. However, their effect on the hydric and thermal properties is less well understood and these properties are important for thermal mass and passive humidity control in buildings, aspects linked to occupant health and reductions in energy use. The present paper includes the first in-depth study of the thermal conductivity and diffusivity, as well as the water vapour permeability and moisture buffering of compressed earth blocks and plasters incorporating natural fibres. Two different vegetable materials, barley straw and corn pith, were mixed to the clay materials in two different percentages (1% and 2%). The results show that the vegetable materials have a great impact on the thermal properties and the apparent density of the mixtures, but a limited effect on the hydric properties. The greatest improvement of the moisture behaviour was shown by the specimens incorporating 2% of corn pith. This improvement is greater for short time exposure than long time exposure. After 3 h, these mixtures adsorbed 15.5 g of moisture more than the plain samples, but after 8 h the difference was reduced to 8.0 g. This indicates that such mixtures might be more appropriate in environments with short and intense moisture loads, such as bathrooms. Previous research has demonstrated that earth provides the highest moisture buffering capacity of common building materials, and this research demonstrates how these properties can be enhanced for specific applications.
