Medical parasitology is the science that studies human parasites, diseases caused by them, and measures to combat these diseases. Medical parasitology is an important part of the science of parasitology (which includes zooparasitology and phytoparasitology) and studies the causes, transmission, pathogenesis, clinic, epidemiology, immunology and treatment of parasitic diseases in humans, as well as ways of prevention and control of these diseases. Traditionally, parasitic diseases include diseases caused by protozoa (protozoa), diseases caused by helminths (helminthoses) and diseases caused by arthropods. One of the most important tasks facing parasitology is the development and implementation of scientific-based measures against diseases caused by parasites in order to protect people's health, protect agricultural animals and plants from various diseases. Human helminthiasis is one of the urgent problems of medical science and practical healthcare. More than 90 % of parasitic diseases in humans are caused by helminthiasis. Among helminths, soil-transmitted helminths are of particular importance due to their widespread distribution and the role they play in human pathologies. Ascaris lumbricoides is the most widespread helminth among soil-transmitted helminths. Ascariasis is widespread in all countries, as well as in Azerbaijan, according to the WHO, about 15 % of the world's population is infected with it. WHO has prepared a program for the control and prevention of soil-transmitted helminths for 2016-2020, taking into account the negative impact of this ascariasis on human pathology, especially in children and their widespread distribution not only in developing countries, but also in developed European regions. One of the main goals of this program is to eliminate ascariasis among schoolchildren in the European region by 2020. The Republic of Azerbaijan is one of the regions where soil-transmitted helminths is widespread. Many scientific-research works on various aspects of ascariasis have been carried out at the Scientific-Research Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine in Azerbaijan. Ascariasis infection causes nervous system and cognitive impairment, mental and physical weakness and growth retardation in children. In adults, in most cases, irritability, reduced work capacity, and sleep disturbances occur. Even if children and adults do not have any clinical symptoms, ascariasis causes weight loss and some infectious diseases (dysentery, typhoid fever, etc.). Ascariasis leads to complications of pregnancy and other pathological changes. Mechanical or parenchymal jaundice can be observed in 65 % of patients with ascariasis. The aim of this study was to analyse the epidemiology of gastrointestinal helminths among local and exotic breeds of chickens in Borno State, Northeastern Nigeria. Fresh faecal samples (n=800) were collected from birds at live poultry markets (Maiduguri metropolis, Jere and Bama Local Government Areas) and Veterinary Hospitals. They were processed according to standard parasitological techniques. A total of 438 samples had one or more helminths, giving an overall prevalence of 54.8% (95%CI: 51.3 – 58.2). These included five nematodes, Ascaridia galli (14.6%), Heterakis gallinarum (9.8%), Capillaria spp. (5.5%), Strongyloides avium (4.1%), Subulura brumpti and three cestodes, Raillietina tetragona (6.6%), Raillietina echinobothrida (3.5%), Davainea proglottina (2.1%). Purpose: Data on gastrointestinal infections in horses in Southeastern Europe are limited; thus, this study aimed to add to the existing knowledge on this topic by reporting on the prevalence of intestinal parasites of horses in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Methods: In the period from April 2017 to December 2018, parasitological examination of 548 samples from horses of different breed, age and sex from four regions and 18 districts of the country was performed. Coprological diagnostic was done by using qualitative methods without concentration and qualitative methods with concentration of parasitic elements. Quantification of the obtained results was performed using semi-qualitative faecal egg count. Results: Four helminthoses were detected in the examined samples: P. equorum (8.57%), O. equi (3.65%), strongylid eggs (71.17%) and Anoplocephala spp. (0.91%). The total prevalence of helminthoses was 77.19%. Monoinfections were significantly more present 70.07% compared to coinfections (7.12%). The highest prevalence of helminthoses was detected in free-ranging horses (93.10%—27/29), in autumn 86.67% (117/135) and winter 79.71% (165/207), in Šumadija and West Serbia region (100%), and in the youngest category (100%). Significant difference (p < 0.001) was detected in the prevalence of monoinfections by strongylids and O. equi and also coinfections by strongylid/P. equorum between horses of different age categories. Conclusion: Obtained results are of great contribution to clinical parasitology and pathology, especially from the aspect of animal health, welfare and preservation of horse population. The purpose of the research is to analyze and summarize the literature data and the results of our own studies on the use of drug delivery systems and methods for increasing the solubility and efcacy of anthelmintic drugs.Helminthoses are one of the most important problems in veterinary medicine and animal husbandry, not only due to the pathological effects, but also due to the spread of anthelmintic resistance. Since the development of new anthelmintic substances takes many years and investment, some strategies are currently focused on modifying existing drugs to increase their efcacy, reduce side effects and overcome anthelmintic resistance. Literature data analysis on various methods and means of increasing the solubility and efcacy of anthelmintic drugs was carried out and the prospects for their use, including using modern nanotechnological methods of drug delivery were given.

The purpose of the research is to study the fauna of zoophilous flies on the territory of the farms of the Palekh district of the Ivanovo region, to determine the comparative effectiveness of insecticidal preparations and the duration of their action; establish the role of zoophilous flies in the spread of helminth eggs and protozoan oocysts.Materials and methods. The faunistic collection of zoophilous flies was carried out in calf dispensaries of livestock farms in the farms of the Palekh district of the Ivanovo region. The species of zoophilic flies was determined at the Department of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases of the Ivanovo State Agricultural Academy. The comparative effectiveness of insecticidal preparations was carried out.Results and discussion. The fauna of zoophilic flies on cattle farms in the farms of the Ivanovo region of the Palekh district is represented by three families: Muscidae (92.78%), Calliphoridae (1.16%), Scatophagidae (5.69%). They are equally contaminated with eggs of pathogens of helminthoses and oocysts of pathogens of protozooses, and their role in the spread of helminthosis and protozoosis is determined by the index of dominance in the fauna of livestock buildings. The fastest effect of acute insecticidal action was observed in the drug with AD imidacloprid – 4 min. after contact of insects with treated surfaces of objects. In preparations with AD, thiamethoxam and cypermethrin showed insecticidal properties after 8 min. The longest insecticidal effect was observed in the drug with AD imidacloprid; it was 13 days, while for drugs with DV thiamethoxam and cypermethrin - a little more than half of this period.

The purpose of the research is analyzing data on the spread of taeniidoses among carnivores in Moscow, as well as considering issues of their diagnosis and cross-species differentiation.Taeniidoses occupy a significant place among helminthiases of carnivores. The development cycle of Taenia includes larval parasitism inside the organism of productive animals (cattle, small ruminants, rabbits, etc.), therefore they pose a potential danger to carnivores, as well as humans. Rodents that can also be intermediate hosts of many species of Taenia can play an essential role in the spread of invasion.

The purpose of the research is forecasting an epizootic situation for the main helminthoses of farm livestock in the Russian Federation for 2020.According to the WAHID of the International Office of Epizootics (Office International des Epizooties – QIE), the following zoonotic helminthoses were recorded in the Russian Federation in 2019: 489 people were infected with echinococcosis (causative agents were Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis), among them 4 people died, 42 were infected with Trichinella, and 40 contracted cysticercosis. 382 people suffering from toxoplasmosis were registered, among them 3 died. The infection was caused by ingestion of poorly cooked meat (tissue cysts) which had not undergone diagnostic testing before being supplied to retail trade system. For purposes of the country’s food safety in the field of controlling livestock inventory, products obtained from livestock and health security, the annual monitoring (forecast) is becoming relevant for helminth-contaminated areas of the Russian Federation among livestock.

The purpose of the research is studying the spread of endoparasites of sheep and goats in conditions of private farms. Materials and methods. The studies were carried out in December 2019 in the conditions of private farms in the Kaluga and Tver Regions. The study subjects were sheep and goats of various sex and age groups (adult females and males aged 2–3 years and young animals aged up to 6 months). The material was feces taken from the animals’ rectum. Total 45 samples of feces from sheep and goats from a private farm in the Kaluga Region and 30 samples from sheep from a farm in the Tver Region were collected and studied. Studies for helminth eggs in feces were carried out using the flotation nethod according to the Kotelnikov-Khrenov and the Shcherbovich-Shilnikov method to detect larvae at pulmonary nematodosis. Results and discussion. As a result of coproovoscopic research methods, we found that intestinal parasites in farm in the Kaluga Region were represented by three genera of nematodes - Trichostrongylus, Nematodirus and Capillaria, as well as Protozoa of the genus Eimeria. Eggs of nematodes from the genus Trichostrongylus and Protozoa from the genus Eimeria were found in feces of sheep from the farm in the Tver Region. The infection rate with intestinal parasites in sheep and goats from two farms were similar. Pathogens from the genus Trichostrongylus prevailed, which was obviously associated with similar conditions for keeping and feeding small cattle on both farms. According to the results of fecal studies, the dominant parasitosis in animals from both farms were gastrointestinal strongylatosis.

Objective of research - to study the biological activity of supramolecular complex of fenbendazole with arabinogalactan against helminthoses of sheep considering spectrum of action. Materials and methods. Anthelmintic activity of supramolecular complex of fenbendazole with arabinogalactan (SMCF) was studied in sheep farms of the Moscow and Samara regions, which were infected with helminthoses. The experiments were made in 2014-2015 in the period of the maximal infection of animals. 386 younger sheep were used in experiments, including 50 sheep spontaneously infected with Dictyocaulus filaria , 48 - Nematodirus spp ., 52 - other gastrointestinal strongylata, 47 - Fasciola hepatica , 49 - Dicrocoelium lanceatum , 42 - Strongyloides sp ., 44 - Trichocephalus spp ., 54 - Moniezia spp . All the animals in each case of helminthoses were divided into 6 equal groups of 7-10 sheep each by the principle of analogs. SMCF was administered orally in the form of 10 % powder at the dose of 1,0; 2,0 and 3,0 mg/kg of active substance once to the sheep of the first, second and third groups. Animals of the fourth and fifth groups received the basic drug - fenbendazole at the doses respectively 1,0 and 7,5 mg/kg of bw except for the cases of fasciolosis and dicroceliasis when SMCF was administered at the doses of 15,0; 7,5 and 5,0 mg/kg and fenbendazole - at the dose of 5,0 and 15,0 mg/kg. The control group did not receive the drug. The efficacy of SMCF was evaluated by the results of larvaovoscopic researches of feces by Berman's method in case of dictyocaulosis, a flotation method in case of other helminthoses before and in 15-18 days after treatment. The efficacy of SMCF was evaluated in «control test» with calculation of middle amount of eggs/larva of helminths in 1 g of feces. Results and discussion. The spectrum of anthelmintic action and the therapeutic dose of SMCF with arabinogalactan, received by mechanochemical technology were studied and defined in experiments on 386 sheep, spontaneously infected with different species of helminths. SMCF showed maximum efficiency (96-100 %) in a dose of 3,0 mg/kg of active substance against main helminthoses and in a dose of 15,0 mg/kg - against dicroceliasis and fasciolosis. The efficacy of SMCF was in 2-3 times higher than activity of fenbendazole substance.

Objective of research. As deer are kept year-round on pasture (in summer in tundra in the northern coast of the Russian arctic; in winter – in forest-tundra and northern taiga), biogeocenosis and natural focality of most parasitic and infectious diseases were formed over the years. That should be considered when developing methods for combating them, and to determine the optimal timing of mass treatment and prevention measures.Materials and methods. The question naturally arises, which living and nonliving components ensure pathogen survivability, contribute to the emergence and spread of infectious and invasive diseases. Each disease is characterized by specific factors requiring careful examination and generalization based on the study of clinical records and epizootic diseases in reindeer of the European North of Russia.Results and discussion. Dominant diseases of reindeer in the European region ofNorthern Russia, requiring greater attention of veterinary experts and against which it is necessary to conduct a regular complex of veterinary, prevention and treatment measures are: anthrax, edemagenosis, cephenomiosis, necrobacillosis, echinococcosis, cysticercosis, rabies, leptospirosis, number of helminthoses (strongylatosis, monieziasis, echinococcosis, cysticercosis, etc.). This is a brucellosis-free region, and for many tens years no outbreaks of FMD were reported. The vast majority of the tundra is located in the permafrost zone; the area is dotted with numerous canals, lakes, rivers, streams, marshes, between which in summer on shallow layered soil, grow bushes of willow, dwarf birch, berries, grass and lichen, the main food of deer. The fauna of the tundra is rich and diverse. Here live wolves, foxes, bears, rodents (lemmings, mice), rabbits, birds (geese, ducks, partridges, gulls) and other animals. In summer, "clouds" of midges (mosquitoes, midges, horseflies, flies) are flying in the air. In the region, there are still places virtually untouched by man. However, in recent years, intensive industrial development of the region began to carry out exploration and extraction of oil, gas and other minerals. Oil and gas pipelines, roads, power lines are built which certainly cannot affect negatively the extremely vulnerable nature of the North. For example, reindeer moss trampled or torn down by moving offroaders can be restored only after 7-10 years. Summer season in the North is a very short period, there are usually few warm and sunny days. These negative factors lead to reduced pastures and do not contribute to the growth of the deer population, their health status and fatness.

Infections with parasitic helminths (nematodes and trematodes) represent a significant economic and welfare burden to the global ruminant livestock industry. The increasing prevalence of anthelmintic resistance means that current control programmes are costly and unsustainable in the long term. Recent changes in the epidemiology, seasonality and geographic distribution of helminth infections have been attributed to climate change. However, other changes in environment (e.g., land use) and in livestock farming, such as intensification and altered management practices, will also have an impact on helminth infections. Sustainable control of helminth infections in a changing world requires detailed knowledge of these interactions. In particular, there is a need to devise new, sustainable strategies for the effective control of ruminant helminthoses in the face of global change. In this paper, we consider the impact of helminth infections in grazing ruminants, taking a European perspective, and identify scientific and applied priorities to mitigate these impacts. These include the development and deployment of efficient, high-throughput diagnostic tests to support targeted intervention, modelling of geographic and seasonal trends in infection, more thorough economic data and analysis of the impact of helminth infections and greater translation and involvement of end-users in devising and disseminating best practices. Complex changes in helminth epidemiology will require innovative solutions. By developing and using new technologies and models, the use of anthelmintics can be optimised to limit the development and spread of drug resistance and to reduce the overall economic impact of helminth infections. This will be essential to the continued productivity and profitability of livestock farming in Europe and its contribution to regional and global food security.

An evaluation of the sensitivity and the specificity of the Anisakis simplex antigens purified by affinity chromatography was performed using sera from patients diagnosed with Anisakis sensitisation and sera from patients previously diagnosed with different helminthic infections. Only the sera of the patients diagnosed with Schistosoma mansoni or Onchocerca volvulus parasitic infections were negative against the A. simplex antigen and its purified fractions (PAK antigen: A. simplex antigen purified using columns prepared with anti-A. simplex rabbit IgG and PAS antigen: PAK antigen purified using columns prepared with anti-Ascaris suum rabbit IgG). However all the sera were positive against the A. suum antigen. In all the sera from the patients diagnosed with Anisakis sensitisation, the antibody levels detected using the purified antigens (PAK and PAS antigens) were lower than the observed using the A. simplex crude extract with the highest diminution in the case of the IgG. When these same sera were tested against the A. simplex crude extract by Western blot, several bands of high molecular masses were observed as well as, intense bands at 60 and/or 40 kDa. A concentration of these last proteins was observed in the PAK and the PAS antigens. When the sensitivity and the specificity determinations were performed, only seven of the 38 patients diagnosed of Anisakis sensitisation were positive, as well as, the sera from the patients diagnosed with parasitisms by Echinococcus granulosus or Fasciola hepatica.

These revised guidelines have been developed to assist in the design, execution, and interpretation of studies to assess the efficacy of anthelmintic drugs against internal parasites in dogs and cats. The design and execution of studies are outlined and discussed. Considerations for specific targeted parasites are included. Information is provided on the principles of selection of animals, procedures for randomization, housing, feeding, necropsy procedures, and record keeping for dose determination dose confirmation studies and field studies. Complementary to the WAAVP general anthelmintic guidelines, these species-specific guidelines should assist investigators in the evaluation of anthelmintic drugs in dogs and cats by using comparable and standardized procedures in studies with appropriate numbers of animals. • Scientific guidance for evaluation of anthelmintic efficacy in cats and dogs. • Includes updated recommendations for specific parasites. • Efficacy evaluation mainly based on worm and faecal counts. • Revised guideline to ensure consistency over the different host animal species. • The majority of 38.6 million heads of one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) in the world occur in Africa. • Camels represent the first source of food and income for millions of pastoralists. • Surra in camels is one of the most important constraints in the economy of many African populations. • We argue that control of surra in Africa is affordable and recommend using the PCP approach. • We also propose that methods to control gastrointestinal parasitosis and sarcoptic mange will support improved surra control in camels. With an increasing worldwide population that presently exceeds 38 million, camels are important source of meat, milk, and transportation of goods, in many regions of the world. Camels are particularly critical in the northern parts of Africa, above the tsetse belt. However, camel breeding areas are expanding into southern areas, under the pressures of global warming, leading to increasing risk of acquiring parasitic infections in these non-traditional ecotypes. Common biting flies (tabanids, stomoxyine flies, and Hippobosca camelina) act as mechanical vectors, resulting in exposure to trypanosomosis (Trypanosoma evansi ; Surra) and high camel morbidity and mortality. In these regions, complicating infections with other Trypanosoma may also occur, particularly Trypanosoma vivax. In many modern camel-breeding areas, human populations are living under political upheaval (terrorism, riots), poverty, and precarity (drought, climate modification). Hence, control and/or elimination of Surra in camels would be beneficial to the economies of these populations. Due to the relatively straightforward epidemiology (single parasite with seasonal transmission in a single host species), control of Surra in Africa is affordable and should be based on implementing: (1) national veterinary services capabilities; (2) efficient diagnosis and control methods; (3) joint integrated control of Surra, gastrointestinal helminthoses (mainly haemonchosis), and sarcoptic mange. We propose that methods to control two economically-critical disease problems, gastrointestinal parasitosis and sarcoptic mange, will support improved Surra control in camels. Aided by decision-makers and donors, elimination of Surra could improve camel health and productivity, and stabilize camel-rearing in regions of the world that suffer from political instability and global warming pressures. Abstract: Haemonchus contortus is one of the most pathogenic parasites of small ruminants (e.g., sheep and goat). The treatment of haemonchosis is complicated because of frequent resistance of H. contortus to common anthelmintics. The development of resistance can be facilitated by the action of drug metabolizing enzymes of parasites that can deactivate anthelmintics and thus protect parasites against the toxic effect of the drug. The aim of this project was to investigate the Phase I biotransformation of benzimidazole anthelmintic flubendazole in H. contortus and to determine the biotransformation of other model xenobiotics. For this purpose, in vitro (subcellular fractions of H. contortus homogenate) as well as ex vivo (live nematodes cultivated in flasks with medium) experiments were used. The results showed that cytosolic NADPH-dependent enzymes of H. contortus metabolize flubendazole via reduction of its carbonyl group. The apparent kinetic parameters of this reaction were determined (, ). The reduction of flubendazole in H. contortus is stereospecific, the ratio of (−):(+) enantiomers of reduced flubendazole formed was 90:10. Reduced flubendazole was the only Phase I metabolite found. Effective reduction of other xenobiotics with carbonyl group (metyrapon, daunorubicin, and oracin) was also found. Significant activity of carbonyl-reducing enzymes may be important for H. contortus to survive the attacks of anthelmintics or other xenobiotics with carbonyl group. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
