Pay-as-you-go contracts reduce minimum purchase requirements, which may increase market participation. This paper randomizes the introduction and price(s) of a novel pay-as-you-go contract to the California auto insurance market, where 17% of drivers are uninsured. The pay-as-you-go contract increases take-up by 10.8 p.p. (89%) and days with coverage by 4.6 days over the 3-month experiment (27%). Demand is relatively inelastic, and pay-as-you-go increases insurance coverage in part by relaxing liquidity requirements: most drivers' purchasing behavior is consistent with a cost of credit in excess of payday lending rates, and 19% of drivers have a purchase rejected for insufficient funds. Political frictions significantly affect both pricing and supply in the long-term care insurance (LTCI) market. Comparing the same insurer's requests submitted for the same policy at the same time to different state regulators, we find that they are 13% more likely to be approved and receive 4% more of the requested amount after an election year. Over time, regulatory pushback on premium increase requests leads to persistently lower cash reserves and increases the probability of company dropout. This paper studies how private equity creates value and its consequences for consumer welfare in the insurance industry, where PE investments grew tenfold following the financial crisis. PE firms add value through regulatory and tax arbitrage that increases profits relative to their non-PE counterparts. Crucially, the impact on consumer welfare is nuanced: in the short run, consumers benefit from more favorably priced products. But the arbitrage strategy also exposes them to more risk, as annual expected losses scaled by capital buffers rise by 50 percentage points. A novel type of an investment insurance product for holders of superannuation accounts in Australia, tentatively named an Equity Protection Swap (EPS), is proposed and examined. An EPS shares some features with the variable annuity known as the registered index-linked annuity (RILA) but it is a standalone financial derivative, which makes it appropriate as a protection tool against downside risk for holders of superannuation accounts. Its basic forms, dubbed buffer and floor EPSs, offer a partial protection against losses on a reference portfolio below a predetermined threshold in exchange for a share of portfolio's gains if the realised return on a reference portfolio is above a predetermined level. Model-free explicit pricing formula for a generic EPS is obtained by considering its static hedging by a portfolio of European options. As opposed to classical insurance products, the structure of an EPS allows for the fair initial premium to be null through a judicious selection of the provider's participation rate in portfolio's gains. A theoretical study of forward performance of EPSs based on the cross-currency market model and an empirical cost/benefit analysis based on market data for S&P 500 and S&P/ASX 200 indices demonstrate tangible benefits of EPSs as an efficient investment insurance tool for superannuation accounts. Population ageing undermines traditional social security pension systems that combine pay-as-you-go and defined benefits (DB). Indeed, demographic risk, if guaranteed benefits remain unaltered, will be borne entirely by workers through increases in the contribution rate. To avoid a substantial increase of the contributions and in order to maintain simultaneously the financial sustainability and the social adequacy of the public pension system, risk sharing and automatic balancing mechanisms need to be put in place. We present a two-step convex family of risk-sharing mechanisms. The first shares the risk between contributors and retirees through adjustments in the contribution rate, used to calculate the global covered wage bill, and the benefit ratio that represents the relationship between average pensions and wages. The second step studies how the retirees' risk should be shared between the different retirees' generations through adjustments in the replacement rate and a sustainability factor that affects pension indexation during retirement. The valuation of equity-linked annuity (EIA) has been extensively studied, while few papers consider the impact of long-range dependence (LRD) features on financial and mortality dynamics in EIAs' valuation. To characterise the LRD feature, we adopt the fractional Brownian motion (FBM) in modelling the dynamics of asset prices and mortality intensities, in which clustering jumps are captured by the compound Hawkes process. Besides, the interest rate dynamic is driven by the FBM and correlates to the asset price dynamic. Numerical analyses show that ignorance of the LRD feature and the jump component in the modelling framework could lead to a potential deficiency in the reserve and solvency capital of EIA policies. Purpose: According to the market competition theory, a firm's decision-making is influenced by the behaviors or strategies of its competitors. The repercussions of competition include market-stealing and spillover effects. Relatively few studies in the reinsurance literature discuss the effect of competitors on an insurer's decision-making. This study aims to fill a gap in the reinsurance literature by comparing insurers' reinsurance demand to their competitors' reinsurance purchases. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses unbalanced panel data for the US property-liability insurance industry from 2006 to 2017 to determine the impact of competitors' reinsurance purchases on insurers' reinsurance demand. This study employs the Mixed Effect Model and the Quantile Regression to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings: The evidence suggests that the affiliated reinsurance purchases of competitors have a positive and substantial effect on the affiliated reinsurance demand of insurers, crediting mimicking the reinsurance strategy. Interestingly, the market-stealing effect is supported while the non-affiliated reinsurance metric is used. Remarkably, given insurers with low non-affiliated reinsurance purchases, the finding sustains the mimicking reinsurance strategy. Nevertheless, the market-stealing effect remains a concern for insurers with a high non-affiliated reinsurance purchase. Originality/value: The new findings concerning competitor effects analysis fill a void in the reinsurance literature. Risk diversification, capital substitution, and real services demand may play a crucial role in determining the market-stealing effect, leading to a decrease in market share. Variable annuities, the largest liability of U.S. life insurers, are investment products containing long-dated minimum return guarantees. I show that guarantees with similar economic risks are treated differently by regulation and these differences impact insurers' hedging behavior. When the regulatory regime recognizes certain risks, insurers start to hedge these risks in a substantial way. For some guarantees, this involves hedging both interest rate and equity market risks. However, for others, it involves hedging only equity market risk. As the regulatory regime still does not recognize the interest rate risk of all guarantees, insurers remain exposed to substantial interest rate risk. Purpose: This chapter examines the effect of green banking practices (GBPs) on environmental performance (EP), specifically focussing on the Sri Lankan banking industry. Additionally, the study explores the mediating impact of green finance in the association between GBPs and the EP of banks listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange in Sri Lanka. Methodology: The survey included 233 banking employees from Sri Lanka, and data for this study were collected via questionnaires. The formulated hypotheses were tested employing a regression analysis. Findings: GBPs such as employee, customer, operation, and policy-related practices significantly predicted the banks' EP. Furthermore, the study highlights that green finance partially mediates the relationship between GBPs and banks' EP in Sri Lanka. Implications of the study: The study's results indicate that banks should prioritise integrating GBPs in their organisations to enhance environmental and overall performance. Moreover, strategically utilising green financing techniques might be a substantial channel for banks to further strengthen their ecological dedication and influence. This paper attempts to analyse the effect of insurance development on sophistication measured by the economic complexity index. Empirical analyses are carried out on a sample of 36 African countries over the period 2003-2019. In order to limit potential endogeneity biases, we run the two-step system Generalized Method of Moments and the Lewbel estimator. Empirical results, robust to a set of sensitivity analyses, show that insurance development can foster economic complexity in Africa. Moreover, when distinguishing between life and non-life insurance, empirical results remain globally unchanged, with a greater effect of non-life insurance as compared to that of life insurance. Furthermore, the mediation analysis enabled us to identify innovations and investments as some transmission channels through which insurance development may affect economic complexity in Africa. Thus, African leaders would do well to improve the regulation of the insurance business to enable it to participate effectively in financing the economy and managing risks, thereby stimulating economic complexity. We investigate the optimal investment-and-reinsurance problem for insurance company with partial information on the market price of the risk. Through the use of filtering techniques, we convert the original optimization problem involving different filtrations into an equivalent stochastic control problem under the observation filtration, i.e. the so-called separated problem. The Markovian structure of the separated problem allows us to apply a classical approach to stochastic optimization based on the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation, and to provide explicit formulas for the value function and the optimal investment-and-reinsurance strategy. We finally discuss some comparisons between the optimal strategies pursued by a partially informed insurer and that followed by a fully informed insurer, and we evaluate the value of information using the idea of indifference pricing. This research used the Bayesian method and Gibbs sampling algorithm on an unbalanced database and examined the impacts of the liquidity creation (LC) on the financial stability (FS) of the banks in Southeast Asian countries from 2007 to 2021. With both ‘Cat Fat’ and ‘Cat Nonfat’ method, the study results point out that LC has a positive impact on the BS within the ASEAN by enhancing the stability level of banks in these countries. The study findings of the impact of liquidity creation (LC) on banking stability (BS) within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are critically important because they provide profound implications for regulators and bank managers in determining LC behavior in emerging markets. These outcomes are particularly relevant to liquidity regulations as per Basel III standards. As such, assets with more liquidity are to be held while loans and deposits with illiquidity might cause unexpected effects when LC is reduced. More importantly, this article also contributes empirical results on the relationship between LC and BS. This is the first study to examine the correlation between LC and financial stability of Southeast Asian banks.

Understanding factors that affect the clustering and association of antibodies molecules in solution is critical to their development as therapeutics. For 19 different monoclonal antibody (mAb) solutions, we measured the viscosities, the second virial coefficients, the Kirkwood-Buff integrals, and the cluster distributions of the antibody molecules as functions of protein concentration. Solutions were modeled using the statistical-physics Wertheim liquid-solution theory, representing antibodies as Y-shaped molecular structures of seven beads each. We found that high-viscosity solutions result from more antibody molecules per cluster. Multi-body properties such as viscosity are well predicted experimentally by the 2-body Kirkwood-Buff quantity, G22, but not by the second virial coefficient, B22, and well-predicted theoretically from the Wertheim protein–protein sticking energy. Weakly interacting antibodies are rate-limited by nucleation; strongly interacting ones by propagation. This approach gives a way to relate micro to macro properties of solutions of associating proteins.

AbstractThis study examines natural disasters’ short-run and long-run effects on economic growth. We analysed insurance’s short-run and long-run role in the natural disaster-economic growth nexus using 48 African countries from 2000 to 2020. Using a two-step system GMM, the study revealed that natural disasters have a short-term detrimental effect and a favourable long-term impact on economic growth. Regarding the role of insurance in the relationship between natural disasters and economic growth, it should be noted that while insurance and those affected have a positive complementary effect on economic growth in the short run, the long-term effects of insurance and natural disasters on economic growth are negligible. Therefore, regulators must enforce periodic high regulatory capital requirements to ensure the financial stability of insurance markets, especially the non-life market in Africa, and to enable insurers to absorb the unforeseen shocks from natural disasters in Africa. Also, regulators should create insurance coverage awareness through insurance education to promote insurance development and help reduce individuals’ and businesses’ financial losses upon the occurrence of natural disasters.

Despite insurance contributions to economic growth, the intervening role of structural transformation on the insurance-growth nexus remains scarce, leaving a gap in the literature. Motivated by the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which envisages higher structural transformation, financial development and economic progress, this study examines the threshold effects and the joint impact of insurance and structural transformation on economic growth in Africa. The study employed the generalised method of moments and dynamic panel threshold estimations on 38 countries covering 2008 to 2020. The following findings emerge: First, insurance and structural transformation promote economic growth. Second, the results indicate that structural transformation enhances the impact of insurance on economic growth. This suggests that structural transformation matters in driving insurance market development, ultimately promoting economic growth. Third, the empirical evidence further reveals nonlinearities in the relationship and presents that a high level of insurance penetration stimulates growth and vice versa. More so, the synergistic effect of insurance and structural transformation on economic growth is more substantial at higher threshold levels. This implies that though insurance spurs economic growth, its impact is more effective through the intervening role of a strong structural transformation. Therefore, this study calls for government intervention and policies to improve structural transformations and form insurance synergies to promote growth.

This study investigates the relationship between the development of the life insurance market and bank stability within the context of developing countries. We used data from 2012 to 2020 across 108 developing countries and applied econometric techniques, including fixed-effect and system generalized method of moments (GMM) methods, to test the relationship between the life insurance market size, life insurance market growth, and bank stability at the country level. Our results indicate a positive relationship between life insurance market size and bank stability, i.e., a large life insurance market can help increase bank stability in developing countries. However, these countries should refrain from developing their life insurance markets too quickly; according to our empirical results, there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between life insurance market growth and bank stability. In the context of the growing life insurance market in developing countries as well as the increasing cooperation between banks and insurance companies towards expanding the life insurance market in these countries, our research provides important policy implications for ensuring the stability for financial markets in general.

The aim of the paper is to propose a new comprehensive retirement insurance solution (CRIS) that, by offering appropriate modules, can be flexibly adapted to customers’ needs during the accumulation of funds and entitlements and during retirement. Technically, the product is life-insurance-based and includes insurance for sickness and in-capacity, long-term care (LTC), work activation expenses, hospital stays, and tontine and Luxembourg policies. Due to consumers’ changing expectations and needs, the technical dimension of this solution is based on a three-layer insurance product in which individual parts of the protection are supplemented by several additional benefits (types of assistance) that improve the quality of life of insurance participants and allow the ongoing use of the product. The basis for considering such a new insurance product is the theory of change (ToC), which makes it possible to build considerable flexibility into such a solution. A SWOT analysis was used to position the proposed solution in relation to other insurance products and social security offered by the state.

The relevance of the article is based on an in-depth study of the financial potential of insurers and its impact on the insurance market, which provides valuable information for the stakeholders of the insurance industry. Therefore, this study aims to determine approaches to revealing the essence of the financial capacity of insurers, based on the scientific tools of financial science. The leading approach to the study of this problem is the analysis of the dynamics of liabilities (raised and borrowed funds) and equity capital of insurers and the relationship between them, which enables a comprehensive look at the impact of these indicators on the development of insurance market and internal and external factors that have both an objective and subjective impact on the financial capacity of insurers and the insurance market. The article defines the stages and methodology of assessing the financial condition of insurers. In particular, the normative method, the comparative method, the static method, the formallogical method, the economic-mathematical method, the method of analysis and synthesis became the leading research methods. These assessment methods are crucial for the timely determination of the current state of financial capacity and its potential. Using a multivariate correlation-regression model, the authors demonstrate the importance of various components of financial capacity. The presented results will be useful to various stakeholders in the insurance industry as they provide a deeper understanding of their financial strength, including the dynamics of liabilities, equity and leveraged funds. First of all, it was established that financial resources are the basis of financial capacity. Secondly, the definition of the insurance company’s financial resources as a source and component of the company’s functioning is formulated. Thirdly, it is shown that the insurer’s financial capacity is logically dependent on its investment capacity, which is determined by the amount of financial resources. It was also determined that financial capacity is a dynamic quantity and is manifested only in the process of its use and ideally should be accompanied by its growth. Among them, it was proved that the main components that significantly affect the formation of the financial potential of insurers and the growth of the insurance market of Ukraine are insurance reserves and authorized capital. These conclusions can easily become the basis for the formation of further state insurance policy, which will be followed through legislative reforms, increased competition in the insurance market and will result in an increase in the level of trust among the population.

It is commonly accepted that the success and expansion of insurance companies’ underwriting operations, which is indicated by the premiums received from insurance policies, is reflected in their profitability rates. During the period of 2010 to 2021, Iraqi insurance companies in the private sector that are listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange experienced a fluctuation in the increase and noticeable decrease of gross written premiums, which had a negative impact on their profitability ratios. The aim of this investigation is to analyze the underwriting activities carried out by all insurance companies that are publicly listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange spanning from 2010 to 2021, and assess the impact of these activities on the companies’ profitability rates. To evaluate the profitability of these firms, three indicators are used, namely the rate of return on assets, return on equity, and profit margin ratio. The study employs Data Panel models using Eviews 12 to identify the research samples during the study period. Additionally, the pooled regression model is used to compare the findings and test the hypotheses of the study. In a structured manner, data is collected from the annual reports released by the Iraq Stock Exchange. The statistical examination of the findings reveals that the gross written premium has a significant and positive influence on all of the profitability ratios that were evaluated in this study, namely the rate of return on assets, return on equity, and profit margin ratio.

This special issue originates from a dual submission conference with the NBER Insurance Working Group and the Corporate Finance Program in 2020. It brings a broader perspective on important frictions in insurance markets, including trust between insurers and policyholders, conflicts of interest among brokers, suboptimal policyholder behavior, and risk-based capital regulation. Several developments in the economy and the academic literature have provided an impetus for new perspectives, including the growth of savings products with minimum return guarantees, the global financial crisis, and intermediary asset pricing. Financial intermediaries often provide guarantees resembling out-of-the-money put options, exposing them to undiversifiable tail risk. We present a model in the context of the U.S. life insurance industry in which the regulatory framework incentivizes value-maximizing insurers to hedge variable annuity (VA) guarantees, though imperfectly, and shifts risks into high-risk and illiquid bonds. We calibrate the model to insurer-level data and identify the VA-induced changes in insurers' risk exposures. In the event of major asset and guarantee shocks and absent regulatory intervention, these shared exposures exacerbate system-wide fire sales to maintain capital ratios, plausibly erasing over half of insurers' equity capital. We study how retail savings products can share market risk across investor cohorts, thereby completing financial markets. Financial intermediaries smooth returns by varying reserves, which are passed on between successive investor cohorts, thereby redistributing wealth across cohorts. Using data on euro contracts sold by life insurers in France, we estimate this redistribution to be large: 0.8 |$\%$| of GDP. We develop and provide evidence for a model in which low investor sophistication, while leading to individually suboptimal decisions, improves risk sharing by allowing intercohort risk sharing. We examine the variable annuity market to study conflicts of interest and the effect of fiduciary duty in brokerage markets. Insurers typically pay brokers higher commissions for selling more expensive annuities. Our results indicate that sales are four times as sensitive to brokers' interests as to investors'. To limit conflicts of interest, the Department of Labor proposed a rule in 2016 holding brokers to a fiduciary standard. We find that after the proposal, sales of high-expense products fell by 52 |$\%$| as sales became more sensitive to expenses. Based on our structural estimates, investor welfare improved overall. We assemble homeowner insurance claims from 28 independently operated country subsidiaries of a multinational insurance firm. We propose a new insurance model, in which consumers can make invalid claims and firms can deny valid claims, as is common in the data. In the model, trust and honesty shape equilibrium insurance contracts, disputes, and claim payments, especially when disputes are too small for courts. We test the model by investigating claim incidence, dispute, rejection, and payment, as well as insurance costs and pricing across countries. We analyze the effects of a reform of capital regulation for U.S. insurance companies in 2009. The reform eliminates capital buffers against unexpected losses associated with portfolio holdings of MBS, but not for other fixed-income assets. After the reform, insurance companies are much more likely to retain downgraded MBS compared to other downgraded assets. This pattern is more pronounced for financially constrained insurers. Exploiting discontinuities in the reform's implementation, we can identify the relevance of the capital requirements channel. This study contributes to the literature by investigating the intervening role of information and communication technology (ICT) diffusion on insurance and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study uses the generalized method of moments technique based on 36 countries, spanning 2007–2020. First, the empirical findings reveal that insurance penetration (i.e. total, life and nonlife) and ICT diffusion induce economic growth in SSA. Second, the evidence suggests that ICT boosts the role of insurance in affecting economic growth. Third, the individual ICT variables such as fixed broadband, telephone and internet propel the impact of total and life penetration on growth. Additionally, fixed broadband was remarkable in enhancing the effect of nonlife penetration on growth. The findings imply that though insurance enhances economic growth, its impact is more revealing through the intervening role of ICT infrastructure. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, mutual associations predominated in insuring the large fleet of ships that carried coal from Britain's northeast to London and other ports. The number of associations grew rapidly from the late 1770s, initially on the Tyne, then spreading to other ports on the east coast. They largely saw off the challenge from joint-stock companies created after the liberalisation of the marine insurance market in 1824. Low administrative and legal costs and the ability to mobilise local knowledge to minimise risks allowed the associations to offset the disadvantage of insuring vessels in the same trade facing similar adversities. This article discusses how mutual associations were organised and operated, traces their development on the Tyne and the competition they encountered there from Lloyd's of London and joint-stock insurance companies, and examines the incidence of mutual associations elsewhere in Britain. We introduce a new dynamic clustering method for multivariate panel data characterized by time-variation in cluster locations and shapes, cluster compositions, and possibly the number of clusters. To avoid overly frequent cluster switching (flickering), we extend standard cross-sectional clustering techniques with a penalty that shrinks observations toward the current center of their previous cluster assignment. This links consecutive cross-sections in the panel together, substantially reduces flickering, and enhances the economic interpretability of the outcome. We choose the shrinkage parameter in a data-driven way and study its misclassification properties theoretically as well as in several challenging simulation settings.
