ABSTRACTThe water quality index (WQI) and irrigational index for groundwater were studied in the northeastern section of the Manipur Valley in northeast India. Water samples were collected in 2022 during the pre-monsoon season. To compute the water quality index for drinking water, the basic chemical parameters of total hardness, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, Calcium, Sodium, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Chlorine, and Hydrogen Carbonate were used. The assessment of bacteriological quality is also done, which is crucial for overall water quality evaluation, alongside physical and chemical analyze. For determining irrigation suitability, irrigational indices such as sodium absorption ratio, sodium percentage, and magnesium hazard were calculated. WQI, %Na+, Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), magnesium hazard, permeability Index and total hardness indicate that most water samples are harmless for irrigation and drinking purpose. They have affirmative relationships indicating that these characteristics are interdependent. Approximately 25% of the Piedmont zone groundwater is found to be unfit for agricultural and drinking usage. The encrustation of gypsum, halite, and evaporation into the Disang shares accelerate the dissolution of ions in Piedmont water, resulting in quality degradation. According to Gibbs plots, Durov Scatter Plot, and Hill Piper Trilinear Diagram of water dominated the rock-weathering process, while hydrochemical facies progressed from the beginning to the intermediate stage of Chadha’s graphical representation illustrates the progression of hydrochemical processes in surface water. Therefore, proper integrated water resource management and development are required for effective water resource utilization, particularly around the Piedmont zone. In recent years, the quality of groundwater has caused a significant deal of alarm, and an increasing number of studies relating to it have been published. The geological, structural, and geomorphological features in the intermontane Imphal Valley in Manipur, India, were identified using SRTM DEM data by QGIS Software. This area has simple geology and structural elements, making it an appropriate site to evaluate the use of remote sensing and GIS tools in geological studies. To prevent a water crisis, groundwater resources must be managed sustainably. The current study also concentrated on a bibliometric examination of groundwater management and access to gauge the state of the field. A bibliometric examination of these papers may offer insight into current research and trends. We are the first to join Groundwater Quality Assessment with bibliometric analysis. This prediction, if taken into consideration strategically during the planning of preventive measures for groundwater quality can help to analyze future evaluation to a great extent.

Due to its geographical location in the arid and semi-arid zone, Algeria is suffering from water stress amplified by the effects of climate change. For these reasons this study was conducted to evaluate the suitability for agricultural reuse of treated wastewater of Baraki WWTP. The quality for agricultural reuse is related to the physicochemical parameters and indicators of water quality. The bacteriological characteristics including total and fecal coliforms, fecal enterococci, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus spp. were also considered. The results revealed that SAR and SSP values were excellent for irrigation. A Wilcox diagram showed that most of the samples fell in the field of C3-S1 indicating high salinity and low sodium water. The physicochemical results indicated that most of parameters are in conformity with standards except ammonia NH4+ and total nitrogen that are higher than the permissible limit of USEPA and FAO. The average concentrations of heavy metals are low compared with the FAO recommendations. However, the bacteriological analyses confirmed the existence of germs indicating a fecal contamination exceeding the WHO regulations but an absence of pathogenic germs. Hence, the disinfection of this water and an adequate treatment is needed before its use for agricultural purposes. The brewery industry is known for consuming a significant amount of water during beer production and releasing large quantities of wastewater into the environment. The Harar Brewery factory generates a substantial amount of wastewater, which is utilized for irrigation. However, there have been no comprehensive scientific studies assessing the physicochemical and bacteriological properties of the wastewater in relation to its suitability for irrigation. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical and bacteriological properties of the wastewater to determine its suitability for irrigation. The analytical procedures were conducted following the APHA procedure and the results were compared with national and international standards. Various parameters were investigated, including, temperature (25.01 °C), TDS (848.88 mg/L), TSS (256.67 mg/L), TS (1107.92 mg/L), pH (8.06), EC (1253.42 µS/cm), DO (3.96 mg/L), COD (628.34 mg/L), BOD5 (12.29 mg/L), PO43—P (0.29 mg/L), NH3N (0.65 mg/L), NO3—N (1.52 mg/L), NO2−-N, TN (2.26 mg/L), Mn (0.04 mg/L), Zn (0.03 mg/L), Fe (0.27 mg/L), Cu (0.09 mg/L), Ca (0.51 mg/L), Mg (1.12 mg/L), Na (6.59 mg/L), K (0.68 mg/L), E. coli (4491.67) and TC (14,279.17 CFU/100 mL). Most of the physicochemical parameters and coliform counts met national and international standards. However, EC, TS, TSS, BOD, and COD exceeded Ethiopian standards and international limits. Despite this, farmers continued to use the wastewater for irrigation, potentially leading to long-term adverse effects on both life and the environment. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of implementing advanced treatments to ensure that brewery wastewater meets specific parameters for irrigation suitability.

Our study evaluated the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of water wells and boreholes in the rural commune of Nihit in the Moroccan Anti Atlas. In this study, we assessed the physico-chemical qualities of the water such as pH, temperature, conductivity, turbidity, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, mineral elements, and heavy metals. We also studied the bacteriological quality of the water in terms of microbial germs represented by Total Coliforms, Fecal Coliforms, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Intestinal Enterococci, and sulfito-reducing Clostridium. Apart from two points located upstream of the Douars, nitrate concentrations range from 60 to 290 mg.L-1, well above the permissible value according to the World Health Organization (50 mg.L-1). At some points, values reach concentrations of 4.1.10³ CFU/100 mL, 1.9.10² CFU/100 mL, 60 CFU/100 mL, 1.8.10³ CFU/100 mL, and 90 CFU/100 mL, respectively for total coliforms, fecal coliforms, Escherichia, intestinal enterococci and sulfitoreducing Clostridium. The presence of Total Coliforms, Fecal Coliforms, and E. coli in the water tested is an indicator of contamination by human or animal fecal matter, which may come from conventional septic tanks, untreated wastewater discharges, animal manure leaching, or runoff. We investigated the bacteriological quality of drinking water and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial isolates in food and drinking establishments in Shashemane town, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to August 2022. One hundred water samples were collected from the tap water and storage containers of 50 selected establishments. All the collected samples were analyzed for bacteriological and antimicrobial susceptibility tests using standard procedures. The study found approximately 80% of water samples from the tap and all water samples (100%) from storage containers were contaminated with total coliforms. E. coli was detected in 20% and 26% of water samples from the tap and storage containers, respectively. A total of 68 bacterial isolates were identified, including E. coli (33.8%), Staphylococcus (25%), Salmonella (17.64%), Klebsiella (11.76%), Shigella (10.29%), and Pseudomonas (1.4%). The highest resistance by the isolates was observed against ampicillin (96%), followed by amoxicillin (94%), cotrimoxazole (76.8%), chloramphenicol (36%), gentamycin (23%), ciprofloxacin (23%), and ceftriaxone (12%). The study concluded that drinking water in food and drinking establishments was found vulnerable to microbiological contamination and it is a health risk to consumers. The level of contamination in stored water was found higher than tap water. In addition, antimicrobial-resistant bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Klebsiella, and Staphylococcus aureus were detected in both tap water and stored water. Therefore, awareness should be given to food handlers and owners of the establishments on hygienic water handling practices by the regulatory bodies of Shashemane town and stakeholders. To cover the meat needs of its population, Benin imports large quantities of raw frozen chicken meat from the European Union, United States and Brazil. Consumers can purchase this meat either in open markets (OM) or in frozen meat retail stores (FMRS). The present study aimed to assess the safety of imported raw chicken sold in Benin and the antibiotics susceptibility of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas spp. isolates retrieved from these foodstuffs. Seventy-two samples of imported raw chicken (36 from OM and 36 from FMRS) were randomly purchased from different retail outlets in May 2021 and May 2023 and analyzed using standard microbiological methods. Fifty-two, 36 and 58 isolates of E. coli, S. aureus and Pseudomonas spp., respectively, were tested for their susceptibility to antimicrobials. Aerobic mesophilic bacteria (AMB) and Pseudomonas spp. were the most frequent and dominant flora with density reaching 9.4 and 7.5 Log10 CFU/g, respectively. The highest microbial load recorded for E. coli, S. aureus, Bacillus cereus, Campylobacter spp. and Listeria monocytogenes were 7.0, 4.6, 3.7, 2.4 and 1.4 Log10 CFU/g, respectively, while 73.6, 55.5, 33.3, 2.8 and 1.4 % of the samples tested positive for these bacteria, respectively. None of the samples contained Salmonella spp. Samples collected in OM had concentrations of AMB, Pseudomonas spp., S. aureus and E. coli significantly higher (p 0.05) between samples collected in FMRS over the two sampling periods. The frequencies of multidrug resistant (MDR) E. coli, S. aureus and Pseudomonas spp. were 21.2, 36.1 and 32.8 %, respectively. This study highlights the fact that frozen chicken meat purchased by consumers from retailers in Benin is not always of good quality, with a health risk related to S. aureus and/or L. monocytogenes, emphasizing the need for improvements in hygienic and preservation practices. In addition, this study revealed that imported frozen chicken meat can be a potential source of MDR bacteria.

Under sustainable development conditions, water quality and quantity play a crucial role in meeting basic human needs. To meet the growing demand for water, surface water quality management is an important aspect. Consequently, water quality must be monitored and assessed via the use of innovative techniques, such as water quality index (SEQ-Water).For that purpose, water quality of Oued Fez catchment areas was evaluated according to Moroccan water quality guidelines by using the weighted quality index (SEQ-Water), physicochemical parameters, trace elements and bacteriological characterization. Five Sites were chosen after a diagnosis based on different criteria such as activity and density of population. These sites were Amont oued Fez (S1), Oued Fez (S2), Oued Ljawahir (S3), Oued Tgat (S4) and Oued Ain Smen (S5). Physicochemical quality was determined by evaluating Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), total Kjeldhal nitrogen (NTK), suspended solids (SS), nitrates (NO3-), nitrites (NO2-), ammonium (NH4+), sulphates (SO42-), total phosphorus (TP) and trace elements (Cr, Cd, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb and Zn). Bacteriological analyses were carried out by testing enumeration of total coliforms (TC) and fecal coliforms (FC).Except Oued Ain Smen, physico-chemical parameters exceed by far the Moroccan standards of surface water quality. Thus, local determination of the level of foodborne bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance pattern is essential.Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from September 5th, 2022 to December 31th, 2022. The required data were collected by a structured questionnaire and observation checklist. Randomly selected street-vended foods were aseptically collected, and the bacteriological quality was assessed by using culture techniques. Different biochemical tests were used to identify and characterize bacterial isolates. The antimicrobial-resistant test for isolated foodborne bacterial pathogens was carried out by using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.Results: A total of 34.2% (113/330) with a 95% CI of 29.1– 39.4 of commonly consumed street-vended foods were identified as having unsatisfactory total mean aerobic bacterial counts (> 105 CFU/g; 4.3 × 105 CFU/g). The mean total Enterobacteriaceae, coliform, and staphylococcal counts were found to be 1.4 × 105 CFU/g, 2.4 × 104 CFU/g, and 3.4 × 104 CFU/g, respectively. A total of 12.7% (42/330) of foodborne pathogens were recovered attributed to Staphylococcus aureus (31, 9.4%), Salmonella species (6, 1.8%), and E. coli O157:H7 (5, 1.5%). 6.5% and 16.1% of isolated S. aureus were found to be methicillin-resistant and multidrug-resistant (MDR), respectively. Additionally, 33.3% of Salmonella isolates and 40% of E. coli O157:H7 isolates were found to be MDR.Conclusion: Street-vended foods in this setting have a considerable number of unsatisfactory bacterial qualities, along with drug-resistant foodborne pathogens. Fresh cow milk popularly called Nono was collected from ten (10) different sellers at different areas within Gusau metropolis and one control was collected directly from a lactating cow and transported immediately to Microbiology Laboratory of Federal University Gusau where they wereassessed for their bacteriological quality. The total bacteria viable count of the ten Nono samples ranged between 6.6 x105 to 2.7 x106 cfu/ml, the total coliforms count ranged between 4.2x105 to 2.2x106cfu/ml, the range of the total Staphylococcal count and total lactic acid bacterial count were 2.5x105 to 4.0x106 cfu/ml and 5.9x105 to 1.7x106 cfu/ml respectively. The control sample had total viable count of 5.6 x 103 cfu/ml, total staphylococcal count of 3.2 x 103 cfu/ml, total lactic acid bacteria count of 4.2 x 103 cfu/ml whereas the coliform count gotten was too few to count (TFTC). The isolates were identified based on their morphological characteristics, Gram's reactions and biochemical profiles and a total of seventy-four (74) bacterial isolates belonging to the genus Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Streptococcus, Micrococcus, Pediococcus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, Proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter and Staphylococcus spp. were identified from the eleven samples analyzed. The presence of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Nono is very good as they are one of the most significant groups of probiotic which not only enhance lactose digestion but also stimulate the immune system, However, the presence of E. coli and the other enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus sp. is of public health concern because they can cause several diseases therefore it was concluded that the bacterial loads of the Nono samples were not satisfactory with the exception of the control which had organisms within the acceptable limit of 30,000/ml for raw milk. The presence of potential pathogenic bacteria in all of the Nono samples is an indication that the samples were contaminated and this can potentially cause diseases to the consumers, Hence the need for public enlightenment for handlers and producers of Nono to observe good manufacturing practices in production and storage of the product to avoid outbreak of infections associated with the organisms encountered in this study.

IntroductionThe use of swimming pool water for recreation, rehabilitation, and athletics is widespread around the world, especially in large Cities and Towns. However, poorly managed swimming pool water can facilitate the spread of illnesses connected to recreational water. Despite this, there is no evidence on quality of swimming pools water in Kombolcha Town. Therefore, this study was aimed to evaluate the physicochemical and bacteriological quality of swimming pools water in Kombolcha Town.MethodsA laboratory-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February to April, 2021 in Kombolcha Town. A total of 90 water samples were collected from the three outdoor swimming pools. The study aims to analyze the two circuits of the dairy chain: authorized and unauthorized, by studying the parameters influencing the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of milk in both networks. Samples of raw milk (n=22), collected from nine collection centers (CCL): four authorized and five unauthorized in the region of Kenitra, and four hawking points in the region of Rabat, during a period between March and May 2022, were analyzed to evaluate their physicochemical and bacteriological qualities. The physicochemical quality of the milk included the measurement of chlorides, lactose and fat content, and the determination of titratable acidity and freezing point. The bacteriological quality was assessed by counting the total aerobic mesophilic flora (TAMF), total and fecal coliforms, presumed pathogenic staphylococci and searching for Salmonella. The fat content varies considerably depending on where the milk samples are collected; the average is 4.13% for licensed collection centers, versus 2.94% for unlicensed collection centers and 2.82% for hawking activity. In terms of hygienic quality, the average bacterial load of TAMF in milk from the authorized collection centers is 3.8×108 CFU/ml. Total coliforms (TC) are present with an average rate of 9.37 ×105 CFU/ml with an average portion of 7.87 ×10³ CFU/ml in fecal coliforms (FC), and 1.03 ×106 CFU/ml for presumed pathogenic staphylococci. On the other hand, milk samples from unauthorized collection centers and hawking activity showed higher levels of microbial contamination than those from licensed collection centers. Salmonella was not detected in any of the samples analyzed. The non-compliance with hygiene practices and the late application of cold during the milking, the collection, and the transportation of raw milk, partly explain the origin of this finding. Sachet water (SW) is a major source of drinking in most Nigerian homes, thus making it a possible conveyance medium for health risks due to contamination if persist rather than for replenishment of the body. This study collected SW from three busy neighborhoods in South-West Nigeria and investigated for the presence of indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli (E. coli), Total Coliform (TC), Total Heterophilic Bacteria (THB), Staphylococcus (Staph)) and some physio-chemical parameters (total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and salinity). Multi-variable and exploratory statistical methods were applied to the results to determine correlations between bacterial contamination levels and perceived brand reputation. Bacteriological tests with raw SW samples appeared too numerous to count (TNC) and thus required serial dilutions. After seven-fold serial dilutions, results obtained revealed that SW brands with good reputations had no TC and E. coli and was statistically significant with groupings of other SW brands (χ2 = 12.28; p < 0.05 and χ2 = 37.96; p < 0.05). Additionally, SW brands with poor reputations had mean values of TC ( 19.7 × 10 8   cfu / mL ; 14 × 10 8   cfu / mL   1.15 × 10 8   cfu / mL ) and E. coli ( 18.2 × 10 8   cfu / mL ; 38.7 × 10 8   cfu / mL , 32.4 × 10 8   cfu / mL ) exceeding the threshold value of zero set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Only one sample from a poor reputation brand tested positive for Staphylococcus and was not statistically significant (χ2 = 5.2191; p = 0.074). Principal Component Analysis (PCA)/Factor Analysis (FA) revealed that most of the SW had fecal contamination was the major source. Therefore, this study suggests that periodic cleaning of distribution lines, location-specific treatment, and other quality control (QC) measures should be enforced to reduce water security risk for SW consumption in the region. The study aimed to evaluate the spatiotemporal variation in the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of Oued Inaouène water in relation to urban discharges that remain the main sources of pollution in the Inaouene basin. During the period from May 2019 to March 2020, seven stations were sampled, of which six are spread along the Inaouène Oued in addition to one reference station that is less affected by urban pollution. The indicators used were: Temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity and dissolved oxygen (OD), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), E coli, IE and TC. The quality data obtained were analysed using multivariate statistical methods (the CPA) and the correlation matrix. The results showed that with the exception of the OT station located upstream of urban discharges, the majority of stations downstream of urban discharges have poor quality during both wet and dry seasons, according to Moroccan standards.

Objective: This study assessed the bacteriological quality and prevalence of foodborne bacteria in raw broiler meat sold in Mymensingh City. Materials and Methods: Thigh and breast meat samples (n = 80) from broiler chickens were randomly collected from four live bird markets (LBM) in Mymensingh city for bacteriological analysis. To determine the bacteriological quality, a 10-fold serial dilution of the thigh and breast homogenate was made. Then, total viable count (TVC), total coliform count (TCC), Staphylococci, and Salmonella spp. counts were determined using plate count agar, MacConkey agar, Mannitol salt agar, and Salmonella-Shigella agar. Gram stain, biochemical testing, PCR assays, and cultural properties were used to identify the bacterial isolates. Results: The TVC in the broiler meat sample ranged between log10 8.30 ± 0.54 colony forming unit (CFU)/gm and log10 9.04 ± 0.26 CFU/gm. TCC was found between log10 5.53 ± 0.38 CFU/gm and log10 6.66 ± 0.80 CFU/gm. The mean Staphylococcal count was recorded between log10 4.64 ± 0.61 CFU/gm and log10 6.42 ± 0.53 CFU/gm, and the total Salmonella count ranged between log10 4.75 ± 0.08 CFU/gm and log10 5.69 ± 0.58 CFU/gm. The prevalence of Escherichia coli was the highest (43.2%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (36.8%) and Salmonella spp. (20%), respectively. Conclusions: Data from this study indicated that the TVC and TCC of raw broiler meat sold at LBM exceed the permissible limits and are contaminated with foodborne bacteria, which might cause public health hazards. Freshwater bodies such as lakes, rivers, and their biodiversity are being threatened with water pollution from industrial effluents and household sewages. The main objective of this study is to assess the effects of wet coffee processing plants effluent on the physicochemical and bacteriological properties of receiving rivers. Four rivers and 4 sampling points of the selected rivers were included in the study. Focus group discussion and interview were employed to gather primary data. The result showed that parameters of water quality for downstream of the rivers were significant, particularly in the dry season with BODs ranging from 45 ± 1 to 782.6 ± 97 g/ml, COD ranges from 71 ± 21 to 1072 ± 183 g/ml, Conductivity ranges from 75.5 ± 6.6 to 943 ± 56.3, Turbidity ranges from 7 ± 0.43 to 105 ± 6.2, TDS ranges from 62 ± 6.4 to 1059.6 ± 121 g/ml, temperature ranges from 20.1 to 33 ± 1, T. coli form ranges from 77 ± 1.1 to 493 ± 66 and E. coli ranges from 28 ± 1 to 213 ± 41 were significantly higher and DO ranges from 2.6 ± 0.15 to 6.1 ± 0.78 g/ml, NH4 ranges from 1.85 ± 0.4 to 3.3 ± 0.5 g/ml, and pH ranges from 3.6 ± 0.2 to 7.3 ± 0.45 were significantly lower. Most of the samples taken from wastewater and downstream parts of the river showed high level of water contaminants that are significantly greater than the EEPA discharge limits for surface water. Moreover, the qualitative data indicated that the community was affected by bad smell and color change on rivers, skin irritation, malarial case in human due to coffee processing plant effluents. Therefore, coffee processing plants should treat their effluents before they discharge it into the rivers. Dayat Roumi Lake, a vast body of permanent and shallow water in Morocco, is exposed to urban, tourist, and agricultural constraints. This human intervention can lead to microbial pollution of the lake ecosystem, hence the need to assess this contamination. For this reason, we undertook in this study an evaluation of the microbiological quality of the lake's water. Thus, seasonal water samples were taken at eight selected stations, taking into account the reception sites of the tributaries and anthropic activities. The parameters determined were: temperature (T), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity (EC), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium (NH4+), nitrates (NO3-), orthophosphates (OP), total phosphate (TP), total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms (FC) and fecal streptococci (FS). The results reveal: - A high water conductivity exceeding the admissible value recommended by the Moroccan standard. - A significant presence of coliforms and fecal streptococci, in dry periods, exceeding the standards set by the WHO, which could be attributed to a summer temperature favorable to the development of coliforms. This fecal contamination leads to an increased consumption of dissolved oxygen (high BOD and low DO values) explaining the fish mortality in this period of the year. - The principal component analysis identified the sources of water quality degradation as domestic sewage, agricultural run-off, domestic waste, and human and animal excreta. - The hierarchical analysis divided the sampling stations into three different clusters. The results of the MQI classified the waters from not to highly polluted. Station 4 was classified as the most polluted site. The results of the DOC/BOD ratio showed a spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the biodegradability of the oxidizable matter present in the lake waters. For all these reasons, an effective management plan must be established to protect this water body from further pollution.

Mechanically separated poultry meat (MSPM) has widely been used as an economical raw material to replace the more expensive beef in meat products, especially emulsion-type products. In this study, MSPM was chemically decontaminated using a variety of permitted organic acids before being utilized in the processing of a traditional Egyptian luncheon. After that, the product was left at room temperature to observe how these treatments affected its keeping quality. Both the bacterial populations and the deterioration criteria of the MSPM were greatly reduced by all the utilized organic acids. The most effective treatment that reduced the various bacterial populations by ~3.5 log10 was the lactic acid one. The shelf life of the luncheon was increased to 4 months in decontaminated MSPM, compared to only one month for the control sample due to the significant reduction in the bacterial populations as well as the reduction in pH and both protein and lipid oxidative changes. The study aimed to evaluate the spatiotemporal variation in the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of Oued Inaouène water in relation to urban discharges that remain the main sources of pollution in the Inaouene basin. During the period from May 2019 to March 2020, seven stations were sampled, six of which are spread along the Inaouène Oued in addition to one reference station that is less affected by urban pollution. The indicators used were: temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity and dissolved oxygen (OD), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), E coli, IE and TC. The quality data obtained were analysed using multivariate statistical methods (the CPA) and the correlation matrix. The results showed that with the exception of the OT station located upstream of urban discharges, the majority of stations downstream of urban discharges have poor quality during both wet and dry seasons, according to the Moroccan standards. Objective: This study assessed the bacteriological quality and prevalence of foodborne bacteria in raw broiler meat sold in Mymensingh City. Materials and Methods: Thigh and breast meat samples (n = 80) from broiler chickens were randomly collected from four live bird markets (LBM) in Mymensingh city for bacteriological analysis. To determine the bacteriological quality, a 10-fold serial dilution of the thigh and breast homogenate was made. Then, total viable count (TVC), total coliform count (TCC), Staphylococci, and Salmonella spp. counts were determined using plate count agar, MacConkey agar, Mannitol salt agar, and Salmonella-Shigella agar. Gram stain, biochemical testing, PCR assays, and cultural properties were used to identify the bacterial isolates. Results: The TVC in the broiler meat sample ranged between log10 8.30 ± 0.54 colony forming unit (CFU)/gm and log10 9.04 ± 0.26 CFU/gm. TCC was found between log10 5.53 ± 0.38 CFU/gm and log10 6.66 ± 0.80 CFU/gm. The mean Staphylococcal count was recorded between log10 4.64 ± 0.61 CFU/gm and log10 6.42 ± 0.53 CFU/gm, and the total Salmonella count ranged between log10 4.75 ± 0.08 CFU/gm and log10 5.69 ± 0.58 CFU/gm. The prevalence of Escherichia coli was the highest (43.2%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (36.8%) and Salmonella spp. (20%), respectively. Conclusions: Data from this study indicated that the TVC and TCC of raw broiler meat sold at LBM exceed the permissible limits and are contaminated with foodborne bacteria, which might cause public health hazards. Background. Hand sanitizers have been recognized as an effective means of reducing bacterial load and transmission. It is needful to periodically assess the bacteriological status of individual products due to batch variation. Aim. This study was designed to assess the bacteriological quality and efficacy of two hand sanitizers sold within the Ilishan-Remo community of Ogun State, Nigeria, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Samples of two brands of hand sanitizers were procured and assessed using standard bacteriological methods, including Sterility test, Surface viable count, Gram-stain, Motility test, Biochemical tests, Quantitative suspension test, and Agar diffusion test. Sachet water (SW) is a major source of drinking in most Nigerian homes, thus making it a possible conveyance medium for health risks due to contamination if persist rather than for replenishment of the body. This study collected SW from three busy neighborhoods in South-West Nigeria and investigated for the presence of indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli (E. coli), Total Coliform (TC), Total Heterophilic Bacteria (THB), Staphylococcus (Staph)) and some physio-chemical parameters (total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and salinity). Multi-variable and exploratory statistical methods were applied to the results to determine correlations between bacterial contamination levels and perceived brand reputation. Bacteriological tests with raw SW samples appeared too numerous to count (TNC) and thus required serial dilutions. After seven-fold serial dilutions, results obtained revealed that SW brands with good reputations had no TC and E. coli and was statistically significant with groupings of other SW brands (χ2 = 12.28; p < 0.05 and χ2 = 37.96; p < 0.05). Additionally, SW brands with poor reputations had mean values of TC (19.7×108 cfu/mL; 14×108 cfu/mL 1.15×108 cfu/mL) and E. coli (18.2×108 cfu/mL; 38.7×108 cfu/mL,32.4×108 cfu/mL) exceeding the threshold value of zero set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Only one sample from a poor reputation brand tested positive for Staphylococcus and was not statistically significant (χ2 = 5.2191; p = 0.074). Principal Component Analysis (PCA)/Factor Analysis (FA) revealed that most of the SW had fecal contamination was the major source. Therefore, this study suggests that periodic cleaning of distribution lines, location-specific treatment, and other quality control (QC) measures should be enforced to reduce water security risk for SW consumption in the region.

Background: Camel milk is the key food for pastoralists in the arid and semi-arid areas of the eastern lowlands of Ethiopia. Unless it is handled under good hygienic conditions, milk can be a good medium for bacterial growth and can lead to foodborne diseases caused by various pathogenic microorganisms, such as Staphylococcus aureus. The current study was aimed to determine the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in raw camel milk and associated factors in Fedis, Eastern Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2, 2018 to May 26, 2019 in Fedis, Eastern Hararghe, Ethiopia. The questionnaire was used to determine the hygienic practices of camel milkers and sellers. Laboratory analysis was conducted to determine the level of Staphylococcus aureus. A total of 156 (78 from households and 78 from selling sites) milk samples were collected randomly from selected camel herd owners and selling sites for the isolation and enumeration of Staphylococcus aureus. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS software version 22.0. Finally, Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze the data. A P -value of.05 was considered as the cut-off point for statistical significance. Results: A total of 156 samples, including 78 samples of raw milk from the households and 78 samples from the market were purchased to determine Staphylococcus aureus. Out of 156 samples, Staphylococcus aureus was detected in 60 (38.5%) samples, of which 27 (34.6%) and 33 (42.3%) were among those collected from household and market, respectively. The overall mean Staphylococcus aureus count was 4.83 log CFU/mL, with household and market samples accounted for 2.76 and 5.08 log CFU/mL, respectively. Furthermore, 23 (38.3%) of the samples were contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus beyond the recommended level (4-5 log CFU/mL). There was a statistically significant association (P -value of <.05) between the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus and other variables such as age of the camel, parity, lactation stages, and sources of milk. Conclusion: More than one-third of milk samples were contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus at levels higher than the maximum permitted level. The findings of the current study suggests that there is a potential risk of foodborne infection and intoxication. Despite drinking water supply in Kobo town is from a borehole through pipes, a high incidence of waterborne diseases are frequently reported. Hence, this study aimed to assess the bacteriological and physicochemical drinking water quality in Kobo town. One hundred and twenty water samples were collected from four sampling sites (the source, reservoir, taps, and households' containers) from February to April 2020. Total and fecal coliforms were counted from the water samples using membrane filtration while selected physicochemical parameters were determined using standard methods. The mean counts of total and fecal coliforms ranged from 3.9 to 22.9 and 1 to 13.6 CFU/100 mL, respectively. Hence, all water samples did not satisfy the WHO guidelines and national standards. There were statistically significant differences in the coliform counts between the different sampling sites, and the counts were significantly higher in the taps and households' containers compared to the counts in the source and reservoir (p < 0.05). All physicochemical parameters, except for temperature, were within the recommended acceptable limits. High coliform count in the water system demands proper maintenance of the distribution line and good hygiene practices at household level to improve the microbiological quality of drinking water in Kobo town. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the hygienic quality of spring and well water used mainly for drinking and domestic activities for some districts in the municipality of Al-Hoceima city. In the rainy season of November to April 2018-2019, a total of fifty-two groundwater samples were collected under appropriate conditions and analyzed according to Moroccan standards, for coliform bacteria (BC), Escherichia coli (E. Coli), and intestinal Enterococcus (IE). The sample locations were identified from the physiochemical details and the nature of nearby pollution. The physical parameters of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen O2, oxygen saturation, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS) and salinity were measured on site. The results revealed that quality of water from all springs and wells, in the area of study, did not meet the World Health Organization guideline as well as Morocco standard for drinking water of zero (0) coliform forming unit (CFU) per 100 mL for CB, E. Coli and IE, respectively. Furthermore, fecal contamination of groundwater is indicated, the high bacteria count in samples could be attributed to their closeness septic effluent, the infiltration of wastewater into groundwater, and to the inadequate treatment of sewage. Fruit juices are important components of a healthy diet and a dietary source of nutrients, vitamins, and fiber and vital for human health. However, unless it is handled with safety and hygienic conditions, food can be a vehicle for the transmission of various agents of diseases resulting in food borne outbreaks. Thus, this study aimed to determine common pathogenic bacterial species in locally prepared fresh fruit juices sold in juice houses of Eastern Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study design was conducted from 1 January to 27 March 2020, in eastern Ethiopia. Seventy-eight juice samples were collected aseptically using a sterilized collecting jar from each juice house. Pour plate count method was used to determine Staphylococcus, Salmonella, and Shigella species. Finally, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tests such as Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. P -value of.05 was considered as a cut point for statistical significance. The study found Staphylococcus count ranged from 1.68 log CFU/mL with the mean value of 4.204 log CFU/mL. Overall, 58 (74.4%) of the fruit juice samples had Staphylococcus count, 19 (24.4%) had Salmonella and 12 (15.4%) had Shigella higher than the maximum permitted limit of Gulf standard, 2000 set for any type of fruit juice. In general, the study found more than two-thirds of fruit juice samples had at least 1 pathogenic bacteria species higher than the maximum permitted limit and potentially hazardous to consumer health. Thus, regular supervision and application of food hygiene and safety are essential to improve the quality of fruit juice and to prevent the consumption of contaminated fruit juices, which leads to food borne illness. Abstract Background Access to safe drinking water is one of the basic human rights and is critical to health. However, much of the world’s population lacks access to adequate and safe water. Approximately 884,000, 000 people in the world still do not get their drinking water from safe sources; Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for over one third of this number. It is estimated that 80% of all illnesses in the world are related to use of unsafe and contaminated water. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from August 1st 2017 to July 30th 2018 in three randomly selected woreda (districts) of Eastern Zone Tigrai. Water samples were examined for total coliforms and thermotelorant coliforms using the most probable number method. Standard biochemical testing was performed on samples that tested positive to identify the genus of bacteria. Abstract Background In low resourced countries, water-associated diseases have still impact on public health. Poor quality of water can cause waterborne diseases through bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and parasites that has been responsible for millions of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, this study aimed to assess quality and safety of public municipal drinking water in Addis Ababa City. Methods Descriptive epidemiological study design that used quantitative approach was carried out at Addis Ababa City Administration from June 2016 to October 2016. Pre-tested and standardized aseptic sample collection technique was utilized to collect a total of 2976 samples (2951 water samples for bacteriological analysis by Presence-Absence (P-A) culturing method and 25 samples for parasites identification through direct microscopy examination). Descriptive data were summarized and cleaned by the SPSS version 20 software and presented in table and graph. Results The study revealed that 10%, 7% and 3% were positive for bacteriological, total coliforms, and fecal coliforms respectively through Presence-Absence Broth test. The bacterial distribution trends from 1st to 13th weeks of wet season were slight increment of total coliforms and slight decrement for fecal coliforms. All tested for parasitological samples from selected reservoirs were free from parasitological species. Conclusion This study reflects that there were positive for bacterial, total coliforms, and fecal coliforms during the study period. It needs continuous screening and treating water sources to utmost important for prevention and control waterborne disease.

Hepatovirus A is known as a waterborne and foodborne virus that can be transmitted from one person to another through contaminated water and raw food. Therefore, it is necessary to survey the circulation of this type of enteric virus in the wastewater to prevent prospective outbreaks. Wastewater samples collected from WWTP El Menzeh I and Charguia I have been the subject for physicochemical, bacteriological (MPN) and virological analyses. Hepatovirus A (HAV) detection was carried out using the standard reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Hepatovirus A was detected respectively in 62% (63/102) and 66% (92/140) of the collected wastewater samples at El Menzeh I and Charguia I WWTPs. The treated effluent by natural oxidizing lagoon procedure was characterized by a poor physical-chemical and virological qualities but with excellent bacteriological quality. Consequently, this effluent is not suitable to be recycled and reused in agriculture or even dismissed in the environment. The treated sewage by activated sludge and rotating biodisk procedures turned out to be of a very good physical-chemical quality but with a poor bacteriological and virological quality. After tertiary UV-C254 nm irradiation, the faecal indicator bacteria concentration was mostly reduced and removed. These findings confirmed the need for improvement and upgrade of the treatment processes used in these two studied sewage purification plants and the necessity of implementation and establishment of a proper national virological standard to control the circulation rates of enteric viruses in Tunisian municipal wastewater. Background: Meat safety is important for public health. As part of the meat chain abattoirs are required to give attention to meat hygiene and safety in order to minimize hazards. Therefore, the current study was conducted to evaluate the bacteriological quality of sheep carcasses, knowledge and hygienic practices of workers in a selected abattoir and to determine the effect level of 2.5% citric acid spray on total coliforms and aerobic bacteria load of raw sheep carcasses surfaces. Methods: A cross-sectional study design with structured questionnaire and observational checklists observation were used. A systematic random sampling technique was employed. A total of 50 sample swabs (25 swabs before citric acid spray and 25 after citric acid spray) were randomly taken from brisket, flank and rump of sheep's carcasses. Swabs were moistened with buffered peptone water (BPW) and samples were taken by rubbing 100 cm2 (10 cm × 10 cm) area delineated by sterile aluminum template. In addition, we administered a structured questionnaire and an observational checklists to assess knowledge and hygienic practices of workers. Bacteriological quality of sheep carcasses were analyzed using the methods described by the US bacteriological analytical manual. Results: The mean count for aerobic bacteria of the sheep carcasses before and after citric acid spray were 7.2log10 CFU/ml and 6.4log10 CFU/ml, respectively. The test results also showed that 21 (84%) and 15 (60%) of the swab samples were positive before and after spraying citric acid, respectively. The mean counts for coliform bacterial of the sheep carcasses before and after citric acid spray were 3.5log10 CFU/ml and 2.9log10 CFU/ml, respectively. The mean total aerobic and coliform counts before and after citric acid spray were significantly different (P <.05). Regarding the hygiene condition of workers, all the respondents reported that they always washed their hands with soap before and after entering the slaughtering room and 23 (53.5%) of the workers reported that they used hot water. Thirty-one (72.1%) of the workers reported that they do not used soap to wash hands after visiting toilet. Thirty-five (81.4%) of the production workers did not wear mouth mask while handling and distribute meat/carcass. On the other hand, all of the workers wore capes, gowns and boots at the time of the observation and only 18 (18.6%) of the production workers wore gloves at the time of the survey. Conclusion: The current study revealed that significant proportion of sheep carcasses were positive for t otal aerobic bacteria and total coliform. Moreover, the study also showed that spraying of sheep carcasses with 2.5% citric acid significantly reduced the total coliform and aerobic counts. However, we did not assessed how much spray results to this effect. Therefore, we recommended further studies to determine how much spray of 2.5% citric acid significantly reduce bacterial contamination of sheep carcasses. In addition, the abattoir has to follow the food hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) system to minimize meat contamination during harvesting and processing. The abattoir has to also implement strict operation laws to improve hygiene conditions of the workers. Background: The demand for drinking water has necessitated the proliferation of bottled water companies in Kenya. This study evaluated if retailed bottled water in Nairobi Kenya complies with both local and international reference criteria. Methods: A total of 42 different water brands (25 approved by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and 17 banned brands) were analyzed for both physicochemical and bacteriological quality. The spread plate method was used to obtain the total plate count of bacteria, while the membrane filter method was used to obtain total coliform count (TCC) and fecal coliform count (FCC). Structured interviews were used to gather company-related information. Results: Overall, 16% of KRA-approved and 35.3% of banned bottled water were contaminated with heterotrophic bacteria. Of the approved water brands, 4% were positive for total coliforms, compared with 17% of the banned brands. Similarly, 4% and 17% approved and banned water brands were positive for fecal coliforms, respectively. Escherichia coli (19.1%), Pseudomonas spp. (9.5%) and Klebsiella spp. (4.8%) were the most common bacterial types isolated from all water brands, most of which exhibited multidrug resistance. In multivariable analysis, water companies that cleaned pipework and bottles using chlorine-based disinfectants (OR 0.08, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.8), those that had food safety programs (OR 0.1, 95% CI 0.019 to 0.9), had standard operating procedures (SOP) for water sourcing (OR 0.1, 95% CI 0.012 to 0.9) and SOP for contamination protection (OR 0.1, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.9) remained independently associated with bottled water brands exceeding WHO TCC limits. Conclusions: A number of bottled water brands were contaminated with one or more types of indicator bacteria, some of which were multidrug-resistant. Water bottling companies’ processes contribute to contamination. Rigorous regulation and monitoring will improve water quality and safety.

Background: Providing safe and adequate Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services in response to emergencies is a major problem. Globally, few studies have investigated the bacteriological quality of drinking water at the IDP sites. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the bacteriological quality of drinking water and associated factors at the IDP sites of Gedeo zone. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 213 water samples collected from November to December 2018. The membrane filter technique was used to retain bacteria and lauryl sulphate broth media was used to detect faecal coliforms. After incubation of 14 hours at 44°C, faecal coliforms with yellow colonies were counted and expressed in terms of CFU/100 ml of water. The data were entered into Epi data version 3.1 and exported to STATA version 14 for analysis. Binary logistic regression analysis with 95%CI and P ⩽.05 was used to identify factors associated with an outcome variable. Results: Out of 213 water samples collected, 107 (50.2%) samples were tested positive for faecal coliforms. The presence of latrines in uphill (AOR: 6.7, 95%CI: 1.0-42.9), other sources of pollution (AOR: 5.0, 95%CI: 1.1-22.3), inadequate fencing (AOR: 7.1, 95%CI: 1.3-40.2) and lack of diversion ditch (AOR: 6.3, 95%CI: 1.0-37.6) were factors significantly associated with faecal contamination of springs. Dug wells that had a latrine within 10 m (AOR: 11.4, 95%CI: 1.8-72.1), other pollution sources within 10 m (AOR: 7.9, 95%CI: 1.9-32.4), inadequate fencing (AOR: 2.8, 95%CI: 1.0-7.9), drawing water using a bucket with rope (AOR: 7.3, 95%CI: 1.6-33.4) and unsanitary well cover (AOR: 3.4, 95%CI: 1.1-10.4) were factors significantly associated with faecal contamination of wells. Conclusions: The majority of the water sources in internally displaced people sites were tested positive for faecal coliforms. The presence of latrine in uphill, other sources of pollution, inadequate fencing, lack of diversion ditch, drawing water using a bucket with rope and unsanitary well cover were factors associated with the presence of faecal coliforms. Therefore, adequate fencing, proper diversion ditch construction and hygiene promotion should be done to protect water sources from faecal contamination. Present study was conducted to analyze the microbial quality of raw milk sold in Bikaner. One hundred milk samples were collected from various sources like dairy farms, milk pooling booths, and local milk vendors from the different areas of Bikaner, Rajasthan. For determining the microbial quality of raw milk samples standard plate count, psychrophilic count and total coliform count were performed. The mean Standard plate counts for dairy farms, pooled milk sources and local vendors was 7.02 x 105, 8.21 x 106 and 1.6 x 107, respectively. On the basis of ISI standard for standard plate count 13% of the milk samples were found to be of good quality, 39% were of fair quality and 48% were of poor bacteriological quality. Standard plate counts showed non significant difference among the various sources of raw milk samples, dairy farms, pooled milk sources and local vendors (P value = 0.116). Mean psychrophilic counts were found 3.15 x 105, 4.21 x 105 and 1.38 x 106 for dairy farms, pooled milk sources and local vendors, respectively. Coliform count showed 10 samples were of satisfactory grade while remaining 90 samples belonging to all these groups as dairy farms, pooled milk sources and local vendors were of unsatisfactory grade when compared with ISI 1962 grades. The aims of this research were 1) to find out the possible microbiological contamination and residues of pesticides (chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin) in lettuce grown in Bahía Blanca's horticultural belt, and bacteriological quality of waters used for irrigation and post-harvest washing, 2) to investigate and compare the internalization capacity of a strain of Escherichia coli isolated from irrigation water with another hospital uropathogenic strain. Some strains of bacteria can internalize into the plant tissue. This capability presents food safety threats as they cannot be removed with standard sanitation practices. To determine bacteriological quality of lettuce, E. coli, Salmonella spp and E. coli O157: H7/NM (n = 10) were investigated. Bacteriological quality of water was determined by quantification of fecal coliforms/100 mL (n = 20). Pesticides were determined by using an improved and validated QuEChERS method combined with GC-MSD. Irrigation water in 19/20 samples did not present health risk. Bacteriological quality of lettuce met demands in 9/10 samples. Pesticides were detected in half of the samples, values exceeding the FAO recommendations. An effort is strongly recommended to implement both, best phytosanitary practices and monitoring programmes. Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the antimicrobials nisin and lysozyme to control the growth of spoilage bacteria of pasteurized milk during cold storage. Materials and Methods: Nisin, lysozyme, and a mixture of them were inoculated into freshly pasteurized milk at 500 IU/ml concentrations each. The acidity, sensory evaluation, and bacteri¬ological quality of the treated pasteurized milk samples were examined at zero time and every 3 days till the samples showed the signs of spoilage, that were checked every day. Results: Obtained results showed that there was a slight increase of the titratable acidity of the control and treated samples during refrigerated storage, but the acidity increase was significantly lower in samples containing lysosomes and/or nisin than the control samples. Nisin and lyso¬zyme at 500 IU/ml concentration possessed inhibitory effect on the total bacterial, aerobic spore-formers, and psychrotrophic bacterial counts and extended the shelf-life of the treated samples. The efficacy of nisin 500 IU/ml combined with lysozyme 500 U/ml was assessed and synergistic activity has been detected, that was expressed in the form of higher inhibitory effect and extend¬ing the shelf-life of the samples up to 15 days at cold storage. Moreover, the sensory evaluation showed that nisin and lysozyme does not affect the acceptability of the examined samples. Conclusion: The obtained data indicate that nisin and lysozyme have the potential to enhance the post-process bacteriological safety of pasteurized milk during the storage period and could aid in the elimination of post-process contamination and prolong its shelf-life. The physicochemical and bacteriological quality of groundwater was assessed to show the impact of the agriculture and human activities in the Triffa Plain located in North-East of Morocco. The current levels of contamination of the groundwater were estimated by analysing electrical conductivity, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, orthophosphate, and indicators of faecal pollution content.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate and to compare the bacteriological and sanitary quality of raw cow milk coming from two sales circuits: direct (D) and indirect (ID). In all, 246 milk samples were collected for analysis. Microbiological analysis and enumeration of the total flora (TF), total coliforms (TC), faecal coliforms (CF), Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were carried out. Antibiotic residues (R.ATB) were investigated using DELVOTEST SP-NT. The results revealed that the majority of milk samples have a TF exceeding the threshold of 105 CFU.ml-1. The increase in human populations together with their daily activities continues to have great influence on the quality of borehole water in Nigeria. In the current study, the major source of drinking water within Arkilla which is the one of the most growing community in Wamakko local government area of Sokoto state, were analyzed bacteriologically to ascertain their portability. A total of three water samples were collected from available boreholes within the major sites of Arkilla area namely; Arkilla layout, Arkilla federal low cost and Arkilla state low cost. They were analyzed for the total bacterial, coliform and faecal coliform counts using the standard plate count and most probable number (MPN) assays. Obtained results were compared with (WHO) standards for drinking water sources. The mean total bacterial count ranged from 5.4 ×104 to 3.7 ×106 cells/ ml, whereas, the total coliform counts of the water samples ranged from 12 -16 MPN/100 ml. The faecal coliform count ranged from 0-1 MPN/100 ml. General bacterial genera encountered were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp. and Enterobacter spp. The bacterial load recovered from the studied borehole water samples were above the WHO standard for bacterial loads, and coliform content. Therefore, current results suggest that some of the borehole waters in Wamakko local government area, Nigeria; were not safe for drinking.

The quality of water supply is assessed by its physico-chemical and bacteriological properties. This study was carried-out with the aim of determining the contamination level of domestic water sources of Samaru community, Zaria, Northcentral Nigeria in order to observed the trend of change in quality of these water sources, if any. This was with a view to safeguard the public health of the riparian users against a possible outbreak of water borne diseases. Water samples were collected and analyzed for bacteriological and physicochemical quality using standard procedures. The results showed that the mean values recorded for physico-chemical parameters among the domestic water sources were within stipulated limits of WHO for safe drinking water except for chloride mean value of 314 ± 142.4 mg/L recorded in borehole water. Aims: Water is described as safe and wholesome when it is free from pathogenic microorganisms and chemical substances that are hazardous to human health. This study aimed to investigate the microbial quality of water used for drinking, cooking, bathing and other purposes at universities in Nigeria Methodology and results: Water samples were collected from forty-four storage tanks across four selected universities. Total viable bacteria in the water samples were cultivated using the plate count agar. The isolation of total coliform and Escherichia coli were carried out on Harlequin? E. coli/coliform agar (HA) medium, while media-faecal coliform was used for faecal coliform employing the membrane filtration technique. Physicochemical parameters such as alkalinity, pH, total alkalinity, total dissolved solid, total suspended solid, electrical conductivity, total hardness, fluoride and chloride ion concentrations, were evaluated in accordance with standard procedures. Data were compared statistically using MedCalc statistical software. Considering the heterotrophic bacterial counts, all water samples were unsatisfactory. For the total coliform counts, 50% of samples were satisfactory but suspicious, while remaining 50% were unsatisfactory. Faecal coliforms results showed that 50% of samples gave excellent quality, 25% showed satisfactory but suspicious quality, while 25% showed unsatisfactory result. There were no significant differences in the total viable, total coliform and E. coli counts of water sampled from universities A and D (p>0.05). The predominant bacterial species was Pseudomonas aeruginosa (23.17%), while the least encountered was Salmonella typhimurium (2.44%). All physicochemical parameters tested were within the acceptable limit Conclusion, significance and impact of study: This study revealed that the water used by students of studied universities was contaminated with potential bacterial pathogens. A total of 45 samples of herbal preparation consisting of 15 each of “Maganin Shawara,” Maganin tsusan ciki and “Maganin Basir” claimed to cure typhoid fever, intestinal parasites and pile respectively were analyzed. The isolation, identification and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of bacterial contaminants of the herbal products were carried out using standard procedures. The study was aimed at determining the bacteriological quality of some liquid herbal preparations sold within Jos metropolis, Nigeria and the antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates. The results showed that out of the 45 liquid herbal samples analyzed, 21 (46.67%) were contaminated with Esherichia coli, 8 (17.78%) with Staphylococcus aureus, 6 (13.33%) with Salmonella sp, 7(15.56%) and 3(6.67%) were contaminated with Bacillus sp and Proteus vulgaris respectively. Antibiotic susceptibility tests showed that all the isolates have high level of resistance to the antibiotics used in this study. Findings of this study imply that the herbal preparations are of poor bacteriological quality and may be potential source for the dissemination of multi-drug resistant microorganisms. Background: In low resourced countries, water-associated diseases have still impact on public health. Poor quality of water can cause waterborne diseases through bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and parasites that has been responsible for millions of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, this study aimed to assess quality and safety of public municipal drinking water in Addis Ababa City. Methods: Descriptive epidemiological study design that used quantitative approach was carried out at Addis Ababa City Administration from June 2016 to October 2016. Pre-tested and standardized aseptic sample collection technique was utilized to collect a total of 2976 samples (2951 water samples for bacteriological analysis by Presence-Absence (P-A) culturing method and 25 samples for parasites identification through direct microscopy examination). Descriptive data were summarized and cleaned by the SPSS version 20 software and presented in table and graph. Results: The study revealed that 10%, 7% and 3% were positive for bacteriological, total coliforms, and fecal coliforms respectively through Presence-Absence Broth test. The bacterial distribution trends from 1st to 13th weeks of wet season were slight increment of total coliforms and slight decrement for fecal coliforms. All tested for parasitological samples from selected reservoirs were free from parasitological species. Conclusion: This study reflects that there were positive for bacterial, total coliforms, and fecal coliforms during the study period. Water quality information is needed to assess the state of water contamination in a variety of community, including those that rely primarily on unimproved underground sources of drinking water. The study was carried out with an aim to assess the quality of ground water in particular sites of the Kathmandu valley. The ground water samples were collected from shallow well, tube well and deep tube wells located at specific places of the valley. The research was focused on physiochemical and bacteriological analysis of underground water from sites near to Bagmati river (≤20 meters) and from sites far from Bagmati river (>50 meters). The sampling sites were scattered from Sinamangal to Minbhavan. Total sample size was 100, with 50 in each stratum. Study processing was done during the period from February 2013 to May 2013. Six physiochemical parameters namely pH, Conductivity, Ammonia level, Chloride level, Nitrite level, Nitrate level and Biological parameters (Coliform and Fecal coliform) of each sample was tested. Based on the research work, it was recorded that the underground water close to river (≤20 meters) has comparatively high physiochemical and biological parameter (Fecal Coliform) than underground water that were farther from the river (>50 meters). Fecal Coliform was predominant 58% (29/50) in water nearer to river rather than in water farther from the river 20% i.e. (10/50). Similarly, the values of physiochemical and biological parameter increased comparatively with more distance i.e. ≤10 meters from river. The finding indicated that the underground water near to river is more polluted than far from the river.

The bacteriological water quality associated with marine fish farming systems can be a determining factor in the development of disease, and understanding this quality is fundamental for the prevention and control of possible disease outbreaks. In the present study, the bacteriological water quality of a yellowtail amberjack Seriola lalandi broodstock maintenance system, composed of two units of a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS 1 and RAS 2), was determined. From February 2016 to January 2017, monthly samples of surface water were taken at six points in the two RAS systems: (a) from the water reception tank and (b) from filter 1 and (c) tank 1 (in RAS 1) and (d) filter 2 and (e) tank 2 (in RAS 2) and from a joint (f) discharge point. The bacteriological quality was determined by counting total heterotrophic bacteria (THB) and by molecular identification (16S rRNA gene). The number of THB showed a tendency to decrease in filters 1 and 2, to increase in tanks 1 and 2, and again increase in the discharge. The fluctuation of THB, in general, was from 1.0 × 103 to 2.9 × 105 CFU/mL. In total, 102 colonies were isolated, corresponding to nine orders and 52 species, and Vibrionales and Alteromonadales were the most abundant orders. The bacterium Vibrio harveyi, a pathogen of S. lalandi, was identified, as were other bacterial species that are known pathogens; however, no signs of disease or mortality events were recorded during the study. These results suggest that the bacterial community contributed to the maintenance of a balance in the RAS, which prevented the development of infectious diseases. Furthermore, the physicochemical parameters (temperature, oxygen, nitrogen compounds, and alkalinity) were maintained within the optimum range required by S. lalandi. Some zoonotic bacteria were found, as well as bacteria with probiotic and industrial uses. These results represent the first report on bacteriological quality in RAS for S. lalandi. The bacteriological and mycological quality of commercially and laboratory prepared Ginger based Yaji was investigated. Ten Ginger Yaji samples were purchased randomly from three wards within Wukari and compared with the laboratory prepared Yaji. The pH in water of all the Yaji samples was acidic and ranged from 4.87 ± 1.08 to 5.52 ± 0.07. The total viable bacteria count ranged from 1.0×108 cfu/ml to 4.0×109 cfu/ml, while the fungi count ranged from 2.0×108 cfu/ml to 1.7×109 cfu/ml. The predominant bacteria isolated were Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The fungi isolated were Aspergillus and Penicillium species. Sensory evaluation showed that commercially prepared Ginger Yaji (A) with 6.73±1.95 is the most preferred, followed by the laboratory prepared Ginger based Yaji (F), with 6.57±2.67, as the second most preferred, while Ginger Yaji (J), with the mean score of 3.17±2.15 is the least preferred. This study had shown that microorganisms are associated with Ginger based Yaji which is as a result of poor hygienic measures taken by the producers, use of deteriorated spices and exposure of the Yaji to unsanitary environmental condition. There is need for public enlightment on the danger of microbial contamination of Yaji. Government should encourage industrial production of Yaji to enable compliance to Good Manufacturing Practices since the laboratory produced Yaji (sample F) was not contaminated. The main objective of the study was to assess the microbiological quality of milk at different stages of the dairy value chain from farm to the factory in Bangladesh. A total of 438 raw milk samples (387 from primary producers, 32 from collectors, 15 from chilling plants, 4 from local restaurants) and 95 commercially processed milk samples were collected from northern part of Bangladesh. Almost 72% (n = 280) of samples at producer level and 100% from both collectors (n = 32) and chilling plants (n = 15) were contaminated with coliforms while 57% (n = 220) of samples from producers, 91% (n = 29) of samples from collectors and 100% (n = 15) from chilling plants were contaminated with fecal coliforms. Around 31% (n = 119) of samples from producers were positive for E. coli whereas >60% (n = 20) and 100% (n = 15) samples from collectors and chilling plants, respectively were positive for E. coli . One quarter of samples from collectors were positive for B. cereus and coagulase positive staphylococci and 33% (n = 5) of samples from chilling plants were positive for both of these microorganisms. In case of commercially processed milk, 77% (n = 46) and 37% (n = 22) of pasteurized milk samples had a high aerobic plate count (APC) (10 4  CFU/ml) and coliform count (>10 CFU/ml), respectively. None of the samples was positive for Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., and Campylobacter spp. Among 158 E. coli positive raw milk samples, 9% (n = 14) contained pathogenic E. coli , and enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) and Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC) were found to be the predominant pathotypes. Of the 23 pathogenic E. coli identified from 14 samples based on their gene contents, >95% (n = 22) were resistant to at least one antibiotic and 13% (n = 3) of isolates were resistant to ≥3 classes of antibiotics. Several factors including the time of milking, hygiene practices of the producers, cow breed and amount of milk produced by the cow were found to be significantly associated with high APC of milk samples. In conclusion, both raw and commercially pasteurized milk are highly contaminated with fecal organisms. Objetives. To determine the microbiological quality of the water used in dental units of a University Clinic in Bogotá, through the microbiological indicators like total coliforms, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus and Pseudomonas. Methods. Water samples from hand piece and the triple syringe 9 dental units and three samples of tanks for water supply for a total of 21 samples were taken. The microorganism counting was performed by membrane filtration method according to the Standard Methods. Some microorganisms present in different samples were isolated through the BBL CRYSTAL rapid test kit. Results. The water does not comply with the Resolution 2115 2007, which regulates the water suitable for human consumption standards. Important bacteria such as Shigella sp. (producer of dysentery and a fecal pollution indicator organism), Klebsiella and Pseudomonas were isolated. Iindustrial fresh cheese coming from the main companies of the city of Cajamarca, is widely consumed by the inhabitants of the city; however, the population does not know it's bacteriological quality, representing a health risk. Likewise, there is no data base of food intoxications presented in the Cajamarca Region. The objective of the research is to determine the microbial load of fresh industrial cheese, as well as to evaluate its bacteriological quality by means of what is established in the Sanitary Standard that constitutes the Microbiological Criteria of Sanitary Quality and Safety for Food and Beverage for Human Consumption. For this, a total of 30 samples of 0.5 kg each were taken from 6 companies producing industrial fresh cheese (A, B, C, D, E and F). The relevant microbiological analyzes were performed for the determination of viable mesophiles, coliforms, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus. The design was completely randomized with 5 repetitions. At the conclusion of the analysis process, the following average valuesof microbial load were reported: viable mesophiles 1.06×105 CFU/g, total coliforms 6.32×103 MPN/g, fecal coliforms 4.75×103 MPN/g, positive samples for Escherichia coli 33.3%, Staphylococcus aureus 4.02×103 CFU/g and absence of Salmonella spp. These results were compared with the Sanitary Standard that establishes the Microbiological Criteria of Sanitary Quality and Safety for Food and Beverage for Human Consumption "(R.M.
