Social housing policies in neoliberal contexts have become residualized. The notions of housing vulnerability and vulnerable populations emerged as a new organizing principle for the housing policy agenda and interventions in many countries. However, there is no cohesive and shared understanding of the characteristics and types of vulnerable households and housing situations, nor the drivers and consequences of different forms of vulnerability. This leads to questions about how to apply the concept to address people's right to housing. This special issue presents research into what housing vulnerability means in different world regions, what structures and systems may be driving it, and the variety of experiences of housing vulnerability. These studies use different theoretical frameworks, methodologies, and empirical contexts to examine factors and initiatives that drive or counter housing vulnerability, fostering a dialogue towards critical housing research and policy agendas that meet our expectations of housing as a human right. Background: The perfect repair of damaged skin has always been a constant goal for scientists; however, the repair and reconstruction of skin is still a major problem and challenge in injury and burns medicine. Human amniotic membrane (hAM), with its good mechanical properties and anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial benefits, containing growth factors that promote wound healing, has evolved over the last few decades from simple skin sheets to high‐tech dressings, such as being made into nanocomposites, hydrogels, powders, and electrostatically spun scaffolds. This paper aims to explore the historical development, applications, trends, and research hotspots of hAM in wound healing. Methods: We examined 2660 publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) from January 1, 1975 to July 12, 2023. Utilizing bibliometric methods, we employed VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R‐bibliometrix to characterize general information, identify development trends, and highlight research hotspots. Subsequently, we identified a collection of high‐quality English articles focusing on the roles of human amniotic epithelial stem cells (hAESCs), human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs), and amniotic membrane (AM) scaffolds in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Results: Bibliometric analysis identified Udice–French Research Universities as the most productive affiliation and Tseng S.C.G. as the most prolific author. Keyword analysis, historical direct quotations network, and thematic analysis helped us review the historical and major themes in this field. Our examination included the knowledge structure, global status, trends, and research hotspots regarding the application of hAM in wound healing. Our findings indicate that contemporary research emphasizes the preparation and application of products derived from hAM. Notably, both hAM and the cells isolated from it – hADSCs and hAESCs are prominent and promising areas of research in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Conclusion: This research delivers a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge frameworks, global dynamics, emerging patterns, and primary research foci in the realm of hAM applications for wound healing. The field is rapidly evolving, and our findings offer valuable insights for researchers. The neoliberalization of housing policy and housing financialization have brought unequal impacts on housing outcomes. Drawing on eight waves of census data, this study uncovers the changing mechanism of housing stratification in selected Canadian census metropolitan areas from 1981 to 2016, a period when Canada transitioned from a welfare housing regime to a neoliberal regime. This study reveals entrenched housing inequality and strengthened income effect in determining access to affordable housing in the neoliberal era. Housing financialization has significantly contributed to intensified inequality in accessing affordable housing. Access to affordable housing in Canada is also stratified along the lines of gender and immigration status. Homeownership affordability for low-to-moderate-income households has significantly deteriorated over time, representing a new form of housing vulnerability in the neoliberal era. Objective: A lack of relevant research on Lycium barbarum polysaccharide‐glycoprotein (LBP) application in oral diseases. Here, we focused on the effect of LBP on osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) and periodontitis bone loss. Methods: Human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) were isolated and identified by flow cytometry. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, Alizarin Red staining, and combined qPCR and Western blot analyses were performed to elucidate the effects of LBP on the osteogenic potential of hPDLSCs. In vivo experiments were performed with the treatment of LBP in rat periodontal model. MicroCT scanning and histological analysis were conducted to evaluate osteogenesis in situ. Results: Human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) were successfully isolated and identified with CD90, CD29, and CD45. LBP enhanced hPDLSCs proliferation and migration and promoted RUNX2, ALP, Collagen I, and Osteocalcin expression through activating the ERK1/2 signaling pathway in vitro. The inflammatory factors, including interleukin 6 (IL‐6) and interleukin 8 (IL‐8) were reduced after LBP treatment. Alveolar bone resorption was significantly decreased in the LBP‐treated groups in vivo, and osteoclast was markedly decreased by LBP application. Conclusion: LBP promoted hPDLSC osteogenesis by targeting the ERK1/2 signaling pathway and reverse bone loss by reducing inflammation. Background and objective: Hydroxyapatite scaffolds with different morphologies have been widely used in bone tissue engineering. Moreover, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been proven to be extensively involved in regulating bone regeneration. We developed grooved porous hydroxyapatite (HAG) scaffolds with good osteogenic efficiency. However, little is known about the role of miRNAs in HAG scaffold‐mediated promotion of bone regeneration. The objective of this study was to reveal the mechanism from the perspective of differential miRNA expression. Methods: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to perform the coculture of cells and scaffolds. The miRNA profiles were generated by a microarray assay. A synthetic miR‐129‐5p mimic and inhibitor were used for overexpression or inhibition. The expression of osteogenic marker mRNAs and proteins was detected by quantitative real‐time PCR (qRT–PCR), Western blotting, and immunofluorescence. An ALP activity kit and alizarin red staining (ARS) were used to measure ALP activity and mineral deposition formation. Cell migration ability was examined by wound healing and transwell assays. Protein kinase A (PKA) activity was measured by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) after miR‐129‐5p transfection. Target genes were identified by a dual‐luciferase reporter assay. H89 preculture evaluated the cross talk between miR‐129‐5p and PKA activity. Heterotopic implantation models, hematoxylin–eosin (HE), immunohistochemistry staining, and micro‐CT were used to evaluate miR‐129‐5p osteogenesis in vivo. Results: miRNAs were differentially expressed during osteogenic differentiation induced by HAG in vitro and in vivo. miR‐129‐5p was the only highly expressed miRNA both in vitro and in vivo. miR‐129‐5p overexpression promoted osteoblast differentiation and cell migration, while its inhibition weakened the effect of HAG. Moreover, miR‐129‐5p activated PKA to regulate the phosphorylation of β‐catenin and cAMP‐response element binding protein (CREB) by inhibiting cAMP‐dependent protein kinase inhibitor alpha (Pkia). H89 prevented the effects of miR‐129‐5p on osteogenic differentiation and cell migration. HE, immunohistochemistry staining and micro‐CT results showed that miR‐129‐5p promoted in vivo osteogenesis of the HAG scaffold. Conclusion: The HAG scaffold activates Pka by upregulating miR‐129‐5p and inhibiting Pkia, resulting in CREB‐dependent transcriptional activation and accumulation of β‐catenin and promoting osteogenic marker expression. Why do residents participate in neighborhood affairs in different forms? This study probes this question by integrating the social capital framework and the place attachment framework. Drawing on a qualitative case study and survey data in the city of Guangzhou, China, this research demonstrates the differential effects of place attachment and social capital on different forms of neighborhood participation. Neighborhood attachment (i.e., place sentiment toward a neighborhood) serves as a prerequisite for any form of participation. While neighborhood attachment is sufficient for latent involvement, such as staying informed about neighborhood issues through social exchanges and other spontaneous activities, social capital produces mobilizing forces that motivate residents to move beyond the latent stage to influence community outcomes through manifest engagement. Methodological advances in demographic research, especially age‐period‐cohort (APC) analysis, primarily focus on developing new models yet often fail to consider practical concerns in empirical analysis. We propose a mixed approach that integrates multiple data imputation and structural change analysis in time series so that scholars can (i) construct pseudo age groups based on more coarsely grouped age data and (ii) identify temporal anomalies. This approach is illustrated using multiple waves of Canadian Population Census data (1981–2016). We construct pseudo age groups based on more coarse age information available in the Census data and identify a local anomaly in the temporal trajectory of homeownership in Canada's less populous provinces and territories. These findings are assessed and validated in comparison with results from more populous Canadian provinces. This research broadens the methodological repertoire for demographers, geographers, and social scientists in general and extends the literature on homeownership in an understudied area. Combining the views of managerial myopia and risk aversion, we argue that a short decision horizon could divert corporate investments away from R&D investments. We devise an industry‐adjusted measurement combining CEO's expected tenure and age as a proxy for CEO decision horizon and find a positive relationship between the horizon and corporate R&D investments. The relationship is stronger among firms with lower industry‐level income volatility and lower firm‐level performance pressure. The results also show that CEO age is more important than CEO tenure in affecting the decision horizon. Further analyses indicate that risk aversion determines the studied relationship. To investigate temporal patterns, sociodemographic gradients, and structural breaks in adolescent marijuana use in the United States from 1991 to 2018, we used hierarchical age-period-cohort logistic regression models to distinguish temporal effects of marijuana use among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders from 28 waves of the Monitoring the Future survey (1991–2018). Structural breaks in period effects were further detected via a dynamic-programing–based method. Net of other effects, we found a clear age-related increase in the probability of marijuana use (10.46%, 23.17%, and 31.19% for 8th, 10th, and 12th graders, respectively). Period effects showed a substantial increase over time (from 16.23% in 2006 to 26.38% in 2018), while cohort effects remained stable throughout the study period. Risk of adolescent marijuana use varied by sex, racial group, family status, and parental education. Significant structural breaks during 1995–1996, 2006–2008, and 2011–2013 were identified in different subpopulations. A steady increase in marijuana use among adolescents during the latter years of this time period was identified. Adolescents who were male, were non-Black, lived in nonintact families, and had less educated parents were especially at risk of marijuana usage. For the spherical unit speed nonlightlike curve in pseudo-hyperbolic space and de Sitter space γ and a given point P, we can define naturally the pedal curve of γ relative to the pedal point P. When the pseudo-sphere dual curve germs are nonsingular, singularity types of such pedal curves depend only on locations of pedal points. In this paper, we give a complete list of normal forms for singularities and locations of pedal points when the pseudo-sphere dual curve germs are nonsingular. Furthermore, we obtain the extension results in dualities, which has wide influence on the open and closed string field theory and string dynamics in physics, and can be used to better solve the dynamics of trajectory particle condensation process. This article explores racial and gender disparities in civic-network centrality using various social network methods and regression models. We find that civic networks of women and whites exhibit greater network centrality than their counterparts do. Religious organizations are the hub of civic networks, while labor unions and ethnic/civil-rights organizations are more peripheral. Whites tend to have job-related and nondomestic organizations as the core of their civic network. Women rely on domestic organizations and show little advantage over men in overlapping memberships of voluntary associations. We examine the issue of operating leverage and firm value. Johnstone (2020), in this issue, questions existing results which indicate that higher operating leverage results in lower firm value. We agree with Johnstone (2020) that this result is to be questioned and present a number of arguments which indicate that operating leverage is irrelevant to the valuation of the firm in the context of the CAPM model. This study shows that managers adjust corporate payout policies to counteract intensified short‐selling pressures following the removal of a short‐selling constraint. We use a controlled experiment, the Regulation SHO pilot program, to find that changing the short‐selling rule brings small companies to increase cash dividends, but not to repurchase more shares. Because paying dividends is costly, it is acknowledged as a more reliable signal of stock undervaluation than share repurchase. While our evidence suggests that companies select this payout strategy to deter predatory short sellers, it also shows that a short‐selling activity has a causal effect on corporate payout decisions. This paper studies the relationship between market frictions and political connections in determining financial constraints. We develop a novel index to measure the depth of political connections (PC) at the firm level and provide robust empirical evidence that firms in China actively build PC to alleviate the costs of market frictions. Specifically, we find that firms facing severe market frictions are not as financially constrained as expected. This is because these firms also possess strong PC, which alleviate the costs of market frictions. Technology is enabling organizations across the globe – large and small, for-profit and not-for-profit, governments and scientific groups – to harness the resources, knowledge, talent and creativity of crowds, in their effort to find innovative solutions to vexing problems. As contributors to solving grand challenges, crowds are providing data and funds, generating novel ideas and evaluating and developing concrete solutions. This article proposes a conceptual model for understanding the utility of crowdsourcing in the context of grand challenges. The article further identifies some boundary conditions where crowdsourcing may not be useful and discusses significant barriers to applying crowdsourcing in the Asia-Pacific region. Whereas education inequality has attracted wide scholarly attention, there has been little attention paid to the spatial patterns of schools or, more specifically, the spatial equity of secondary schools. This study investigates the spatial patterns of secondary schools (regular vs. key) in Guangzhou, China and disparities in school accessibility among different social groups at the neighbourhood level. We use a two‐step floating catchment area method to measure school accessibility. Our results demonstrate strong spatial disparities in secondary school accessibility in Guangzhou and further underscore significant associations between the access to secondary schools, especially key schools, and neighbourhood characteristics. This study helps to document salient spatial inequity in China's current education system and suggests that efforts should be made to reduce the country's spatial inequity in secondary education. Objective Methods Results Conclusion This study investigates the DP7‐C/miR‐26a complex as a stable entity resulting from the combination of miR‐26a with the immunomodulatory peptide DP7‐C. Our focus is on utilizing DP7‐C loaded with miR‐26a to modulate the immune microenvironment in bone and facilitate osteogenesis.The DP7‐C/miR‐26a complex was characterized through transmission electron microscopy, agarose electrophoresis, and nanoparticle size potentiometer analysis. Transfection efficiency and cytotoxicity of DP7‐C were assessed using flow cytometry and the CCK‐8 assay. We validated the effects of DP7‐C/miR‐26a on bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and macrophages RAW 264.7 through gene expression and protein synthesis assays. A comprehensive evaluation of appositional bone formation involved micro‐CT imaging, histologic analysis, and immunohistochemical staining.DP7‐C/miR‐26a, a nanoscale, and low‐toxic cationic complex, demonstrated the ability to enter BMSCs and RAW 264.7 via distinct pathways. The treatment with DP7‐C/miR‐26a significantly increased the synthesis of multiple osteogenesis‐related factors in BMSCs, facilitating calcium nodule formation in vitro. Furthermore, DP7‐C/miR‐26a promoted M1 macrophage polarization toward M2 while suppressing the release of inflammatory factors. Coculture studies corroborated these findings, indicating significant repair of rat skull defects following treatment with DP7‐C/miR‐26a.The DP7‐C/miR‐26a system offers a safer, more efficient, and feasible technical means for treating bone defects. Studies investigating market reactions to changes in capital structure aim to find the impact of private information conveyed. However, these studies ignore that financial decisions are not made randomly but are conditional on managers' private information. Using a sample of U.S. leverage-increasing public companies with public long-term debt offerings, we find that debt offerings convey no new information to the markets after considering the conditionality of decisions. We also show that results can be biased if the deterministic role played by private information ex ante is omitted, which may explain the conflicting valuation evidence found in the literature. Foreign banks in China have faced strict regulatory requirements that were not imposed on domestic banks and as such they have performed poorly in profitability rankings. Recent changes in the Chinese regulatory requirements prompt us to consider whether foreign banks are now on an equal footing with the Chinese domestic banks. Using Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier analysis with total income as the dependent variable, we find no significant performance difference between foreign and domestic banks. However, robustness testing using the individual components of total income as dependent variables reveals that foreign banks need to improve efficiency of their income generation. Literature streams disagree about the capacity of investment-cash flow sensitivity (ICFS) to measure both investment thirst and financial constraint. We argue that ICFS measures the former but not the latter. Therefore, we use Fazzari et al.'s study (1988) to develop a model to test the relationship between ICFS and financial constraint, but extend that model using Kornai (1979) to include investment thirst. We demonstrate: because the ICFS-financial constraint relationship varies, ICFS cannot measure financial constraint. Conversely, using a natural experiment of China's Four Trillion Stimulus policy, we show ICFS significantly and positively correlates with investment thirst after controlling for financial constraint. We examine whether disclosure of complex information events reduces information asymmetry by investigating the long- and short-term impact of firms' disclosure of debt covenant violations on the probability of informed trading. We argue debt covenant violation disclosures provide informed agents with a long window of opportunity to trade on their private information largely due to the uncertainty arising from the debt renegotiation process. We find the probability of informed trading is greater after the disclosure, particularly when the violation outcomes are unresolved or where there is concern about possible future violations. Although changes in urban space often mean a restructuring of social relations, few studies elucidate why network-related frameworks are inherently related to residential outcomes in urban neighborhoods. By proposing a relational account of neighborhood governance, we investigate outcomes of neighborhood governance by incorporating a series of measures of network forms of organization, network-based social capital, and neighborly interactions. Based on a collaborative survey project conducted in Guangzhou, we find that neighborhood ties and neighborly interactions are positively associated with neighborhood attachment and cohesion, whereas uneven power relations between grassroots governments and civic homeowners associations are negatively associated with these two measures. This paper provides a discussion of endogeneity as it relates to finance and accounting research. We discuss the textbook solutions: two-stage least squares, instrumental variables, differenced generalized method of moments (GMM) and system GMM and provide a unifying framework showing how they are related. We consider the limitations of these techniques and then detail a state-of-the-art solution, utilizing a natural experiment as a way of mitigating endogeneity and building stronger theory. Using the 2005 microcensus data set, this research adopts a multilevel approach to examine housing outcomes in relation to city-level contexts. We find that housing stratification in contemporary China is not homogeneous across cities but rather is spatially dynamic and conditioned by local contexts. Net of other effects, per capita gross domestic product and housing price are significantly associated with housing outcomes in the open market, whereas the effect of a city's administrative rank is restricted to the social housing domain. In addition, in relatively rich cities, the advantage of proper institutional affiliations in owning commodity housing somewhat diminishes, but it remains persistent, if not strengthened, in owning reformed housing and affordable housing. This paper proposes a probit model to test capital structure theories. Our model is designed to circumvent a methodological problem in traditional regression analysis stemming from the use of scaling (e.g., in the form of financial ratios) that has plagued capital structure studies for more than 100 years (Pearson, 1897). Without correction, this problem potentially yields a spurious relation between the dependent and explanatory variables. For example, a negative relationship between capital leverage and firm profitability is concluded in the literature, which is counter to what is observed in reality. Using a sample of leverage increasing cases resulting from public debt issuances in US markets between 1996 and 2006, our probit model results indicate that leverage increasing firms tend to be more profitable. This study reinvestigates the relationship between financial leverage and firm characteristics in a cross-sectional setting and a panel setting. Monte-Carlo simulation-based inference results confirm the finding of Barraclough (2007) that a cross-sectional multiple regression model sharing common divisors suffers from a latent spurious ratio problem. To avoid the spurious ratio problem, variables in changes instead of ratios are adopted in two panel models: a first-differenced fixed-effects panel model and a dynamic Generalized Method of Moments panel model. The two models respectively integrate fixed effects (e.g. the persistence nature of financial leverage) and endogeneity features of financial leverage decisions. Model results suggest past realization of debt explains most of the current debt level after controlling for endogeneity. This article presents focus group research with community housing residents in Vancouver, Canada, investigating the role, activities, and importance of neighboring to these individuals living in vulnerable situations. Neighborly relationships play a key role in connecting the private home with the larger urban community through processes of home-making, social inclusion and integration, but an increasing share of urbanites are excluded from the structural and social expectations of good neighboring. Although neighbors constitute weaker and different ties than friends and family, and although contemporary urban community housing situations present barriers to good neighboring, neighboring is nonetheless essential to urban quality of life. We propose a conceptual frame of a spectrum of neighboring and find that pro-social neighboring, anti-social neighboring, and a middle zone of asocial neighboring, all are important aspects of life in community housing that are also defined in a context-specific way by community housing residents. The outcomes of this research highlight the need for urban social and housing policy that addresses neighboring across the spectrum as an important part of social inclusion and well-being efforts in cities contending with increasing density, diversity, and vulnerability.
