Sulfate attack is one of the significant durability problems for the geopolymer applied for various severe conditions. In this study, the effects of the water-to-fly ash ratio (W/FA), class C fly ash (CF) content, and alkaline content on the setting times and compressive strength of geopolymer pastes were investigated. According to the results, geopolymer samples of three different strength grades (low, medium, and high) were exposed to a 10% magnesium sulfate (MgSO₄) solution at 80 °C. The weight changes, ultrasonic flight-times, and compressive strengths of the specimens were measured to evaluate their sulfate resistances. Control samples were exposed to water at the same temperature. Finally, microstructural analyses using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and mercury intrusion porosimetry were performed to investigate the corrosion mechanism. The results indicated that higher CF contents led to shorter initial and final setting times and a higher compressive strength regardless of the W/FA and alkaline content. In addition, there was a small weight change for all the geopolymer with different strength grades after they were exposed to an MgSO4 solution. The low strength geopolymer exhibited a better sulfate resistance because of the sustainable increase in the compressive strength and reduction in the ultrasonic flight-time. Moreover, there was a close relationship between the corrosion resistance and the inner structure of the geopolymer mortars. This research provides a theoretical foundation for the application of geopolymers—particularly in coastal and saline areas, which are often subject to sulfate attack.

Chloride resistance is important for the durability of geopolymers used in construction applications, particularly in coastal and saline areas. In this study, the workability, mechanical performance, and chloride resistance of class C/class F fly ash-based geopolymer mortars were investigated. First, the effects of the water-to-fly ash ratio, class C fly ash content, and sand-to-ash ratio, on the fluidity, and mechanical properties of the geopolymers were examined. Second, based on the results, geopolymer mortars with three different strength grades were chosen for chloride resistance tests. After these were subjected to a NaCl solution, their weight change, ultrasonic flight-time, and compressive strength were determined. Moreover, corrosion products were evaluated by conducting microstructural analysis. The results indicated that a high class C fly ash content, small water-to-fly ash ratio, and small sand-to-ash ratio led to low fluidity and a high compressive strength of the specimens. The ultrasonic flight-time and the pore structures of the geopolymers were strongly related. Furthermore, after corrosion, the hydration products appeared as new crystalline zeolite phases in the low-strength samples. Compared with the high- and medium- strength mortars, the low-strength samples showed excellent chloride resistance.

Alkali-activated slag (AAS), an environmentally friendly material, has recently attracted increasing attention for applications in soil improvement. However, most of the studies focused on the geomechanical behavior of non-liquefiable soils strengthened with AAS. The objectives of this study are to examine whether AAS is effective for strengthening liquefiable soil and to evaluate the effectiveness of AAS in deep soil mixing (DSM) technology for mitigation of liquefaction. The mechanical properties and microscale mechanism of the improvement of liquefiable soil by AAS under standard curing, water curing, and seawater curing conditions are studied first. Then, the strengthening effect of the DSM technique using the soil-AAS mixture on the soil-pile-superstructure system is studied by three-dimensional numerical analyses. The results show that the compressive strength of the soil-AAS mixture is much greater than that of the soil-cement mixture. Compressive strength of 32 MPa was obtained for a soil-ASS mixture with 25% slag content under 28-day standard curing. Moreover, the DSM technique using the soil-AAS mixture is an effective method for liquefaction mitigation; the maximum lateral displacement of the pile during shaking can be reduced by half when the area improvement ratio is 20 %.

As the research of HCPS in EI is ongoing, an increasing number of problems should be addressed, such as the leading role or aid function definition of humans, the coordination of humans with cyber and physical equipment, the state awareness of information handling, etc. Therefore, an increasing number of advanced techniques should be considered and adopted, such as IOT, AI and big data, etc., the main target of which is to improve the timely, digitalized, informationized and intelligent characters of the related tasks. This paper first introduces the applications of CPS in every industry, especially in the power grid and EI (Energy Internet), the introduction of which can be classified as a framework design, support technologies and algorithms, system function, power ancillary service, Energy Internet realization, etc. Then, this paper summarizes the related technologies of Human-Cyber-Physical Systems, which mainly include the areas of system design, theoretical analysis, technique development and application forecasting, which emphasizes its applications in EI. For the development of HCPS, it uses the human-in-the-loop concept and digital transformation as the future research and development directions, the performance of which can be largely promoted through these means. With the aid of HCPS, the optimal system performance of EI can be achieved more robustly, which finally evolves into an integrated and comprehensive modern power grid.

Small RNAs (sRNAs) are short noncoding RNAs that play roles in many biological processes, including drought responses in plants. However, how the expression of sRNAs dynamically changes with the gradual imposition of drought stress in plants is largely unknown. We generated time-series sRNA sequence data from maize ( L.) seedlings under drought stress (DS) and under well-watered (WW) conditions at the same time points. Analyses of length, functional annotation, and abundance of 736,372 nonredundant sRNAs from both DS and WW data, as well as genome copy numbers at the corresponding genomic regions, revealed distinct patterns of abundance and genome organization for different sRNA classes. The analysis identified 6646 sRNAs whose regulation was altered in response to drought stress. Among drought-responsive sRNAs, 1325 showed transient downregulation by the seventh day, coinciding with visible symptoms of drought stress. The profiles revealed drought-responsive microRNAs, as well as other sRNAs that originated from ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), splicing small nuclear RNAs, and small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNA). Expression profiles of their sRNA derivers indicated that snoRNAs might play a regulatory role through regulating the stability of rRNAs and splicing small nuclear RNAs under drought condition.

This study focused on the engineering properties of alkali-activated slag (AAS) pastes prepared by mixing an activator consisting of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide at room temperature. The water-to-slag ratio of AAS paste was kept constant at 0.35 by mass. AAS pastes were prepared using the activator with five different silicate moduli of 1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8 and three different Na2O contents of 6%, 8%, and 10%. The results showed that both the silicate moduli and Na2O contents had significant effects on the engineering properties of AAS pastes. All the AAS pastes exhibited properties such as fast setting, good workability, and high early compressive strength. The final setting time varied from 9 to 36 min, and the fluidity was in the range of 147–226 mm. The 1 d compressive strength of all the AAS pastes, which could be easily achieved, had values above 55 MPa, whereas the highest strength obtained was 102 MPa with the silicate modulus of 1 and Na2O content of 8% at room temperature. The drying shrinkage increased as the silicate modulus increased. Furthermore, the hydration products and microstructures of AAS pastes were explained according to the microanalysis methods.

Alkali-activated slag (AAS) mortars were prepared using pottery sand as a fine aggregate in a ratio of 1 : 1.75 using a blend of sodium silicate and NaOH as an alkaline activator at room temperature. The effects of sodium oxide content and silicate moduli on the setting time, fluidity, consistency, compressive strength, and drying shrinkage of different AAS mortars were determined. These results revealed that sodium oxide content and silicate modulus had little effect on the setting time and workability of the mortar; however, they did have a significant effect on their mechanical performance and drying shrinkage levels. All the AAS mortars exhibited faster setting times, better workability, and higher early and late compressive strength compared to traditional mortars. Optimum compressive strength was achieved at 93 and 123 MPa after 1 d and 28 d, respectively, using a silicate modulus of 1.2 and Na2O content of 8%. The microstructures of mortars were characterized using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometric (SEM/EDS) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). These results reveal that AAS mortars containing pottery sand as a fine aggregate may represent a promising building material with improved properties for use in the construction industry.

This paper investigated the curing effects on the mechanical properties of calcium-containing geopolymer mortar. Three precursors are used: Class C fly ash, Class F fly ash plus calcium hydroxide and Class F fly ash plus slag. Curing conditions included: (1) standard curing at 20 ± 3 °C and RH 95% (C); (2) steam curing at 60 °C for 24 h (S); (3) steam curing at 60 °C for 6 h (S6); and (4) oven curing at 60 °C for 24 h (O), then the latter three followed by the standard curing. Under the standard conditions, the flexural strength and compressive strength of Class C fly ash geopolymer mortars developed quickly until the age of 7 days, followed by a gradual increase. Specimens with Class F fly ash plus Ca(OH)2 showed slow increase till the age of 28 days. Under these non-standard conditions (2–4), all specimens showed higher 3-day strength, while later strengths were either higher or lower than those in standard conditions, depending on the type of the precursor.

In this paper, a parametric experimental study developing the alkali-activated slag concrete hollow block (AASCHB) is discussed. Fourteen trial mixes of alkali-activated slag concrete containing pottery sand and ceramsite with different water-to-slag ratios, sand ratios, silicate moduli, and Na2O contents were evaluated to determine the optimal mix for high compressive strength and low drying shrinkage. All four factors evaluated were found to be significant for the desired properties. A series of 390 × 190 × 190 mm3 AASCHBs were prepared using the optimal mix with a water-to-slag ratio of 0.35, sand ratio of 0.64, silicate modulus of 1.2, and Na2O content of 8%. The compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption, and moisture content tests of these blocks indicate that the resulting AASCHB can be classified under the strength grade of MU15 as a load-bearing hollow concrete block. The proposed AASCHBs appear to provide a viable solution to the environmental problems of industrial waste and cement production emissions, leading to more sustainable buildings without compromising structural performance.

Backpressure based scheduling has revealed remarkable performance in wireless multihop networks as reported in a lot of previous work. However, its lack of consideration on energy use efficiency is still an obstacle for backpressure based algorithms to be deployed in resource-constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this paper, we focus on studying the design of energy efficient backpressure based algorithm. For this purpose, we propose a gradient-assisted energy-efficient backpressure scheduling algorithm (GRAPE) for WSNs. GRAPE introduces a new link-weight calculation method, based on which gradient information and nodal residual energy are taken into account when making decisions on backpressure based transmission scheduling. According to the decisions made by this new method, packets are encouraged to be forwarded to nodes with more residual energy. We theoretically prove the throughput-optimality of GRAPE. Simulation results demonstrate that GRAPE can achieve significant performance improvements in terms of energy use efficiency, network throughput, and packet delivery ratio as compared with existing work.

TNFα is one of the initial and important mediators to activate downstream signaling pathways by binding to trimerized TNFα receptors (TNFR), and thus is an ideal drug target for cancer therapy. Taking advantage of intrinsic homotimerization of the globular domain of adiponectin (gAD), we have developed a novel TNFα antagonist, the trimerized fusion protein named sTNFRII-gAD. However, our previously-used CHO expression system yielded less than 10 mg/L of sTNFRII-gAD. To produce large quantities of sTNFRII-gAD efficiently, we used a modified CHO-S cell expression system, which is based on a pMH3 vector with non-coding GC-rich DNA fragments for high-level gene expression. We obtained stable clones that produced 75 mg/L of sTNFRII-gAD in the 96-well plate, adapted the clones to 40 ml suspension serum-free batch culture, then optimized the culturing conditions to scale up the fed-batch culture in a 3 L shake-flask and finally in a 5 L AP30 bioreactor. We achieved a final yield of 52 mg/L of sTNFRII-gAD. The trimerized sTNFRII-gAD exhibited the higher affinity to TNFα with a dissociation constant (Kd) of 5.63 nM than the dimerized sTNFRII-Fc with a Kd of 13.4 nM, and further displayed the higher TNFα-neutralizing activity than sTNFRII-Fc (p

Backpressure based scheduling has been considered as a promising technique for improving the throughput of a wide range of communication networks. However, this scheduling technique has not been well studied for heterogeneous wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a virtual-queue based backpressure scheduling (VQB) algorithm for heterogeneous multi-hop wireless networks. The VQB algorithm introduces a simple virtual queue for each flow at a node for backpressure scheduling, whose length depends on the cache size of the node. When calculating flow weights and making scheduling decisions, the length of a virtual queue is used instead of the length of a real queue. We theoretically prove that VQB is throughput-optimal. Simulation results show that the VQB algorithm significantly outperforms a classical backpressure scheduling algorithm in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless networks in terms of the packet delivery ratio, packet delivery time, and average sum of the queue lengths of all nodes per timeslot.
