This work investigates asymptotic homogenization method (AHM) for axially graded beams that are mapped from periodic ones. The unit cell problems, the homogenized constitutive and governing equations are first established theoretically. Then a novel FE formulation of unit cell problems and effective stiffness, distinct from that of the periodic beams, is derived and resolved for solid elements. Besides, to improve analysis efficiency, an updated concise formulation is acquired for shell elements with proper handle of in-plane rotational DOFs, and a MATLAB code is presented to show implementation details. To quantitatively analyze the impact of climate variability and human activities on grassland productivity of China's Qilian Mountain National Park, this study used Carnegic-Ames-Stanford Approach model (CASA) and Integrated Vegetation model improved by the Comprehensive and Sequential Classification System (CSCS) to assess the trends of grassland NPP from 2000 to 2015, the residual trend analysis method was used to quantify the impact of human activities and climate change on the grassland based on the NPP changes. The actual grassland NPP accumulation mainly occurred in June, July and August (autumn); the actual NPP showed a fluctuating upward trend with an average increase of 2.2 g C·m-2 a-1, while the potential NPP increase of 1.6 g C·m-2 a-1 and human-induced NPP decreased of 0.5 g C·m-2 a-1. The annual temperature showed a fluctuating upward trend with an average increase of 0.1°C 10a-1, but annual precipitation showed a fluctuating upward trend with an average annual increase of 1.3 mm a-1 from 2000 to 2015. The area and NPP of grassland degradation caused by climate variability was significantly greater than that caused by human activities and mainly distributed in the northwest and central regions, but area and NPP of grassland restored caused by human activities was significantly greater than that caused by climate variability and mainly distributed in the southeast regions. In conclusion, grassland in Qilian Mountain National Park showed a trend of degradation based on distribution area, but showed a trend of restoration based on actual NPP. Climate variability was the main cause of grassland degradation in the northwestern region of study area, and restoration of grassland in the eastern region was the result of the combined effects of human activities and climate variability. Under global climate change, the establishment of Qilian Mountain National Park was of great significance to the grassland's protection and the grasslands ecological restoration that have been affected by humans. Reproductive suppression is an adaptive strategy in animal reproduction. The mechanism of reproductive suppression has been studied in social animals, providing an essential basis for understanding the maintenance and development of population stability. However, little is known about it in solitary animals. The plateau zokor is a dominant, subterranean, solitary rodent in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. However, the mechanism of reproductive suppression in this animal is unknown. We perform morphological, hormonal, and transcriptomic assays on the testes of male plateau zokors in breeders, in non-breeders, and in the non-breeding season. We found that the testes of non-breeders are smaller in weight and have lower serum testosterone levels than those of breeders, and the mRNA expression levels of the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and its transcription factors are significantly higher in non-breeder testes. Genes related to spermatogenesis are significantly downregulated in both meiotic and post-meiotic stages in non-breeders. Genes related to the meiotic cell cycle, spermatogenesis, flagellated sperm motility, fertilization, and sperm capacitation are significantly downregulated in non-breeders. Our data suggest that high levels of AMH may lead to low levels of testosterone, resulting in delayed testicular development, and physiological reproductive suppression in plateau zokor. Grassland is the largest terrestrial ecosystem in the Yellow River Basin and an important ecological barrier in the basin. Scientific and accurate estimation of the service value of grassland ecosystems in the Yellow River Basin is of great significance for maintaining the ecological security of the Yellow River Basin. This study was based on Constanza, a method based on the correction of natural grassland ecosystem service value in the Yellow River Basin. This method considers grassland biomass, estimates the ecological service value of each type of grassland item by item, and analyzes their spatial distribution and topographic gradient differentiation characteristics. The results showed that the unit price of soil conservation services provided by the grassland ecosystem in the Yellow River Basin has an advantage (6.2 times) which is the lowest unit price of raw materials. The total value of grassland ecosystem services in the Yellow River Basin is 100.82 × 1010 Yuan. Among the various services, the adjustment service has the largest value, accounting for 50.56% of the total value, while the sum of the supply service, support service and cultural service amounted to 49.44%. The high-value areas of grassland ecosystem services are mainly distributed in the upper and lower reaches of the basin, as the low-value areas are located in the Ningxia and Hetao Plains and most parts of the Loess Plateau. The ESV per unit area of grassland in the Yellow River Basin showed a decreasing to increasing trend with the increase in elevation and topographic relief, as the ESV continued to increase with slope increase. Remote sensing nighttime lights (NTLs) offers a unique perspective on human activity, and NTL images are widely used in urbanization monitoring, light pollution, and other human-related research. As one of the payloads of sustainable development science Satellite-1 (SDGSAT-1), the Glimmer Imager (GI) provides a new multi-spectral, high-resolution, global coverage of NTL images. However, during the on-orbit testing of SDGSAT-1, a large number of stripes with bad or corrupted pixels were observed in the L1A GI image, which directly affected the accuracy and availability of data applications. Therefore, we propose a novel destriping algorithm based on anomaly detection and spectral similarity restoration (ADSSR) for the GI image. The ADSSR algorithm mainly consists of three parts: pretreatment, stripe detection, and stripe restoration. In the pretreatment, salt-pepper noise is suppressed by setting a minimum area threshold of the connected components. Then, during stripe detections, the valid pixel number sequence and the total pixel value sequence are analyzed to determine the location of stripes, and the abnormal pixels of each stripe are estimated by a clustering algorithm. Finally, a spectral-similarity-based method is adopted to restore all abnormal pixels of each stripe in the stripe restoration. In this paper, the ADSSR algorithm is compared with three representative destriping algorithms, and the robustness of the ADSSR algorithm is tested on different sizes of GI images. The results show that the ADSSR algorithm performs better than three representative destriping algorithms in terms of visual and quantitative indexes and still maintains outstanding performance and robustness in differently sized GI images. Clarifying the effects of rubber‐tapping and natural growth weed cover on the variations in the concentrations of soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) may be beneficial to rubber plantation management via optimizing soil N and C accumulations and reducing the risk of environmental pollution due to NO3− leaching. This study aims to compare the concentrations of soil total‐N, available‐N, NH4+‐N, NO3−‐N, and SOC for addressing N and C variations as affected by rubber‐tapping or weed covering in a 14‐year‐old rubber (Hevea brasiliensis cv. GT1) plantation in Xishuangbanna, southwest China. The soil samples at 0–20, 20–40, and 40–60 cm depths between July and December 2018 were examined monthly from no‐rubber‐tapping tree belt (NRTB) or rubber‐tapping tree belt and no‐rubber‐tapping weed zone (NRTWZ) or rubber‐tapping weed zone. The concentrations of SOC, total‐N, available‐N, NH4+‐N, and NO3−‐N vary with soil depths and sampling date. The average concentrations of SOC, total‐N, available‐N, NH4+‐N, and NO3−‐N at 0–60 cm soil depth are significantly higher for the NRTWZs than for the NRTBs. Soil total‐N was positively correlated with SOC; either positive or negative relationships are found among different soil N forms. More soil available‐N and NO3−‐N accumulate for tree growth under weed covering or no‐rubber‐tapping. These findings indicate that the variations in soil N and SOC concentrations should be taken into account as a part of rubber plantation management to improve soil N and C accumulations. Magnetic skyrmions are topological quasiparticles with nanoscale size and high mobility, which have potential applications in information storage and spintronic devices. Here, we computationally investigate the dynamics of isolated skyrmions in a ferromagnetic racetrack, where magnetic properties of the edges are enhanced and modified, forming a channel with lower magnetic anisotropy for skyrmion motion. It is found that the rectangular notch at the edge can have a pinning effect on the skyrmion and enrich the dynamics of the skyrmion. Based on the racetrack with modified edges and the notch, we design a racetrack that realizes the skyrmionic logic AND, OR, and NOT gates as well as the diode in the same magnetic racetrack. It is found that the driving current density could be much smaller than those used in previous designs of skyrmion-based logic gates. By slightly altering the shape of the racetrack, we also design the NAND and NOR gates. Finally, we study the feasibility of our design at finite temperatures. Our results may contribute to the design of nonvolatile spintronic devices with integrated multiple functions and ultra-low energy consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research was designed to explore the variation characteristics of soil C:N:P stoichiometry and enzyme activity in the Qilian Mountains different grassland types. Thus, 7 grassland types (Upland meadow: UM, Alpine meadow: AM, Temperate steppe: ST, Alpine steppe: AS, Temperate Desert Steppe: TDS, Temperate Desert: TD, Alpine desert: AD) of Qilian Natural Reserve were selected to analyze the variation characteristics of soil enzyme activities and stoichiometry of different grassland types and its relationship with environmental factors. The study indicated that the C/N, C/P, and N/P of different grasslands ranged from 5.08 to 17.35, 2.50 to 72.29, and 0.53 to 4.02.The ranking of different types grassland for the C/N was TS ≥ AM ≥ UM ≥ AS ≥ TDS > AD > TD, and the changing pattern of C/P and N/P is similar to that of C/N. The ranking of different types grassland for the urease enzyme activity was UM ≈AS > AD ≈TDS ≈TS ≈AM > TD, and TS ≈AM ≈UM ≈AS ≈AD > TDS > TD for alkaline phosphatase enzyme activity, and AS ≈AM ≈TS ≈TDS≥UM ≥TD ≈AD for catalase enzyme activity. Based on N/P ratio and RDA analysis, nitrogen was the main factor limiting the grassland productivity, and pH, TN, SOC, Richness index and Simpson diversity index were the main environmental factors affecting the soil C:N:P stoichiometry and enzyme activities. Cluster analysis showed that 7 grassland types were clustered into three categories. In conclusion, the stoichiometric characteristics and soil enzyme activities of different grasslands vary with grassland types. Nitrogen was the main factor limiting the grasslands productivity, and pH, TN, SOC, Richness index and Simpson diversity index were the main environmental factors affecting the soil C:N:P stoichiometry and enzyme activities, and the grassland Qilian Mountain can be managed in the ecological district according to the clustering results. High-resolution thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing images can more accurately retrieve land surface temperature and describe the spatial pattern of urban thermal environment. The Thermal Infrared Spectrometer (TIS), which has high spatial resolution among spaceborne thermal infrared sensors at present, and global data acquisition capability, is one of the sensors equipped in the SDGSAT-1. It is an important complement to the existing international mainstream satellites. In order to produce standard data products, rapidly and accurately, the automatic registration and geometric correction method needs to be developed. Unlike visible–visible image registration, thermal infrared images are blurred in edge details and have obvious non-linear radiometric differences from visible images, which make it challenging for the TIR-visible image registration task. To address these problems, homomorphic filtering is employed to enhance TIR image details and the modified RIFT algorithm is proposed to achieve TIR-visible image registration. Different from using MIM for feature description in RIFT, the proposed modified RIFT uses the novel binary pattern string to descriptor construction. With sufficient and uniformly distributed ground control points, the two-step orthorectification framework, from SDGSAT-1 TIS L1A image to L4 orthoimage, are proposed in this study. The first experiment, with six TIR-visible image pairs, captured in different landforms, is performed to verify the registration performance, and the result indicates that the homomorphic filtering and modified RIFT greatly increase the number of corresponding points. The second experiment, with one scene of an SDGSAT-1 TIS image, is executed to test the proposed orthorectification framework. Subsequently, 52 GCPs are selected manually to evaluate the orthorectification accuracy. The result indicates that the proposed orthorectification framework is helpful to improve the geometric accuracy and guarantee for the subsequent thermal infrared applications. Ecology influences the process of speciation. The interspecific differences in mammalian skull morphology, induced by environmental factors, are important when investigating speciation. In the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, the genus Eospalax consists of six species of subterranean rodents, each with its unique niche, making it an ideal model for studying the relationship between biological evolution and the environment. Here, the interspecific differences in five of the six extant species (E. cansus, E. baileyi, E. rufescens, E. smithii, and E. fontanierii) were evaluated at the morphometric and ecological levels using geometric morphometrics, a powerful tool for studying morphological variation. The multivariate analysis of variance showed significant differences in skull morphology on the dorsal and ventral sides in all species. The thin‐plate splines showed that the variations in skull morphology were primarily in the infraorbital foramen, frontal bone, zygomatic arch, occipital bone, incisors, incisive foramen, and tooth row. The multivariate regression analysis showed a significant positive correlation between skull morphological variations and ecological factors; precipitation accounted for the more variations than altitude and temperature. Species inhabiting regions with the highest altitude, minimum precipitation, and temperature (E. baileyi) had the largest infraorbital foramen and zygomatic arch, shortest occipital bone and widest frontal bone, smallest angle formed by two incisors, and longest incisive foramen. Our study elucidates the relationship between skull morphological differentiation and environmental factors in Eospalax, while the biological response to the environment detected warrants further investigation. Soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and nutrient availability are key indicators of soil quality, and both can be influenced by land‐use change. However, it is still unclear whether the impact of land‐use change on SOC and nutrient stocks differs between ecoregions. Grasslands near the northeast border of the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau (QTP) occur across several ecoregions that have recently been subjected to substantial land‐use change. Based on long‐term land‐use history, we conducted a field investigation comparing soil C and nutrient stocks between natural grassland (NGL) and three types of converted grassland (agricultural grassland, AGL; farmland, FL; and abandoned farmland, AFL) in three ecoregions along a climate gradient: alpine meadow, temperate steppe and temperate desert. Compared with NGL, soil C stocks in converted grasslands were 22%–30% lower in the alpine meadow, but 60–82% higher in the temperate steppe and 6%–76% higher in the temperate desert. Converted grasslands also contained higher stocks of available nitrogen and phosphorus than NGL in the temperate steppe and desert. Soils (0–40 cm) in NGL contained 14.8 ± 0.1 kg C m−2 in alpine meadow, 6.7 ± 0.6 kg C m−2 in temperate steppe and 1.7 ± 0.3 kg C m−2 in temperate desert. Together, our results indicate that the responses of soil C and nutrients to grassland conversion differed between ecoregions. Thus, to optimize soil C sequestration rates and overall soil quality, we suggest that land‐use policies in this area should take into account local environmental conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The alpine steppe at Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is an important area for conserving water source and grassland productivity; however, knowledge about the microbial community structure and function and the risk to human health due to alpine plant-soil ecosystems is limited. Thus, we used prediction methods, such as Tax4Fun, and performed a metagenome pre-study using 16S rRNA sequencing reads for a small scale survey of the microbial communities at degraded alpine steppes (i.e., non-degraded (ND), lightly degraded (LD), moderately degraded (MD), heavily degraded (HD), and extremely degraded (ED) steppes) by Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology. Although there were no significant differences in the microbial alpha diversity among the different degraded alpine steppes and the dominant phyla at the different degraded alpine steppes, including Actinobacteria , Proteobacterial , Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi , were similar, the beta-diversity significantly differed, indicating that alpine steppe degradation might result in variation in microbial community compositions. The linear discriminate analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) analysis found twenty-one biomarkers, most of which belonged to Actinobacteria , suggesting that microbes with a special function (such as the decomposition soil organic matter) might survive in alpine steppes. In addition, the functional profiles of the bacterial populations revealed an association with many human diseases, including infectious diseases. In addition, the microbial communities were mainly correlated with the populations of Gramineae and soil total phosphorous. These results suggested that alpine steppe degradation could result in variations in the microbial community composition, structure and function at Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Further studies investigating the degraded alpine steppe environment are needed to isolate these potential pathogenic microbes and help protect livestock using these alpine steppes.
