Electrode material capacities and cycle performances must improve for large-scale applications such as energy storage systems. Numerous investigations have developed cathode materials to improve lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) performance: however, few have examined new anode materials. In this study, we synthesized a Ni-B/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites via a simple chemical reaction method to enhance the stability of electrodes in LIBs. A well-dispersed B, as a component of Ni-B composite, shortened the diffusion distance of lithium ion and allowed for the reversible storage and release of lithium ions. The incorporation of RGO significantly enhanced the dispersion of the Ni-B particles, preventing aggregation and enhancing the electrochemical performance. The long-term cyclic capacity of Ni-B/RGO reached approximately 1200 mAh g−1 at 400 mA g−1. Moreover, well-dispersed B from the reduction of B2O3 enhanced reactions with Li ions, gradually increasing the capacity. After several cycles, Ni-B/RGO maintained its structure without volume changes and with a uniform dispersion of elements. Therefore, Ni-B/RGO exhibited high stability over long cycles, leading to high reversibility. The combination of these features renders Ni-B/RGO a promising lithium storage material for LIBs.

In this study, we prepared a novel microneedle patch using metal bioelectrodes that provide excellent mechanical properties, drug-delivery efficiency, and biocompatibility at the same time. The biocompatible polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) based microneedle patch was prepared using gamma rays. The back side of the PVP based microneedle patch were coated with gold or silver as bioelectrodes using the thermal evaporation method to maximize and control the efficiency of drug release. The Au or Ag-coated microneedle patch has enough mechanical properties to successfully penetrate the skin. In addition, it was confirmed using a Franz cell that the amount of drug released from a drug-loaded microneedle patch was maximized by thermal or electrical stimulus. The drug-release efficiency increased more than 7.9 times compared to a flat PVP patch (without applying electricity) when 3 V was applied. In addition, when ~40 °C heat were applied, the drug-release efficiency of the Au- and Ag-coated PVP based microneedle patches improved about 5.3 times compared to a flat PVP patch at room temperature. These excellent properties of our metal-coated PVP based microneedle patches can be used not only in whitening or anti-wrinkling cosmetics, but also as medical drug-delivery systems to treat such as hypertension, diabetes, and arthritis.

Achilles tendinitis caused by overuse, aging, or gradual wear induces pain, swelling, and stiffness of Achilles tendon and leads to tendon rupture. This study was performed to investigate the suppression of inflammation responses in interleukin-1β- (IL-1β-) stimulated tenocytes in vitro and the suppression of the progression of Achilles tendinitis-induced rat models in vivo using dexamethasone-containing porous microspheres (DEX/PMSs) for a sustained intratendinous DEX delivery. DEX from DEX/PMSs showed the sustained release of DEX. Treatment of IL-1β-stimulated tenocytes with DEX/PMSs suppressed the mRNA levels for COX-2, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. The intratendinous injection of DEX/PMSs into Achilles tendinitis rats both decreased the mRNA levels for these cytokines and increased mRNA levels for anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10 in tendon tissues. Furthermore, DEX/PMSs effectively prevented tendon degeneration by enhancing the collagen content and biomechanical properties. Our findings suggest that DEX/PMSs show great potential as a sustained intratendinous delivery system for ameliorating inflammation responses as well as tendon degeneration in Achilles tendinitis. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an excellent biomaterial with many medical applications. In this study, resorbable BC membranes were prepared for guided bone regeneration (GBR) using an irradiation technique for applications in the dental field. Electron beam irradiation (EI) increases biodegradation by severing the glucose bonds of BC. BC membranes irradiated at 100 kGy or 300 kGy were used to determine optimal electron beam doses. Electron beam irradiated BC membranes (EI-BCMs) were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and using wet tensile strength measurements. In addition, in vitro cell studies were conducted in order to confirm the cytocompatibility of EI-BCMs. Cell viabilities of NIH3T3 cells on 100k and 300k EI-BCMs (100 kGy and 300 kGy irradiated BC membranes) were significantly greater than on NI-BCMs after 3 and 7 days (p < 0.05). Bone regeneration by EI-BCMs and their biodegradabilities were also evaluated using in vivo rat calvarial defect models for 4 and 8 weeks. Histometric results showed 100k EI-BCMs exhibited significantly larger new bone area (NBA; %) than 300k EI-BCMs at 8 weeks after implantation (p < 0.05). Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a natural polysaccharide produced by some bacteria, and consists of a linear polymer linked by β-(1,4) glycosidic bonds. BC has been developed as a material for tissue regeneration purposes. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of resorbable electron beam irradiated BC membranes (EI-BCMs) for guided bone regeneration (GBR). The electron beam irradiation (EI) was introduced to control the biodegradability of BC for dental applications. EI-BCMs had higher porosity than collagen membranes (CMs), and had similar wet tensile strengths to CMs. NIH3T3 cell adhesion and proliferation on EI-BCMs were not significantly different from those on CMs (p > 0.05). Micro-computed tomography (μCT) and histometric analysis in peri-implant dehiscence defects of beagle dogs showed that EI-BCMs were non-significantly different from CMs in terms of new bone area (NBA; %), remaining bone substitute volume (RBA; %) and bone-to-implant contact (BIC; %) (p > 0.05). Honey-based wound dressings have attracted a lot of attention from modern scientists owing to their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects without antibiotic resistance. Such dressings also promote moist wound healing, and have been considered natural, abundant, and cheap materials for folk marketing. This study investigated the various behaviors and characteristics of chestnut honey-impregnated carboxymethyl cellulose sodium hydrogel paste (CH-CMC) as a therapeutic dressing, such as its moist retention, antibacterial activity for inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the rate of wound healing in db/db mice. This study introduces the effect of the thickness of a bacterial cellulose membrane by comparing the bone regeneration effect on rat skulls when using a collagen membrane and different thicknesses of resorbable bacterial cellulose membranes for guided bone regeneration. Barrier membranes of 0.10 mm, 0.15 mm, and 0.20 mm in thickness were made using bacterial cellulose produced as microbial fermentation metabolites. Mechanical strength was investigated, and new bone formation was evaluated through animal experimental studies. Experimental animals were sacrificed after having 2 weeks and 8 weeks of recovery, and specimens were processed for histologic and histomorphometric analyses measuring the area of bone regeneration (%) using an image analysis program. In 2 weeks, bone-like materials and fibrous connective tissues were observed in histologic analysis. In 8 weeks, all experimental groups showed the arrangement of osteoblasts surrounding the supporting body on the margin and center of the bone defect region. However, the amount of new bone formation was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in bacterial cellulose membrane with 0.10 mm in thickness compared to the other experimental groups. Polyurethane (PU) is the fifth most common polymer in the general consumer market, following Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene (PE), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and Polystyrene (PS), and the most common polymer for thermosetting resins. In particular, polyurethane has excellent hardness and heat resistance, is a widely used material for electronic products and automotive parts, and can be used to create products of various physical properties, including rigid and flexible foams, films, and fibers. However, the use of polar polymer polyurethane as an impact modifier of non-polar polymers is limited due to poor combustion resistance and impact resistance. In this study, we used gamma irradiation at 25 and 50 kGy to introduce the styrene of hydrophobic monomer on the polyurethane as an impact modifier of the non-polar polymer. To verify grafted styrene, we confirmed the phenyl group of styrene at 690 cm-1 by Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and at 6.4-6.8 ppm by 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (¹H-NMR). Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and contact angle analysis were also used to confirm styrene introduction. The recycling of waste polyurethane (PU) using radiation-induced grafting was investigated. The grafting of waste PU onto a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix was carried out using a radiation technique with maleic anhydride (MAH). HDPE pellets and PU powders were immersed in a MAH-acetone solution. Finally, the prepared mixtures were irradiated with an electron beam accelerator. The grafted composites were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), surface morphology, and mechanical properties. To make a good composite, the improvement in compatibility between HDPE and PU is an important factor. Radiation-induced grafting increased interfacial adhesion between the PU domain and the HDPE matrix. When the absorbed dose was 75 kGy, the surface morphology of the irradiated PU/HDPE composite was nearly a smooth and single phase, and the elongation at break increased by approximately three times compared with that of non-irradiated PU/HDPE composite. PURPOSE. This study was to evaluate the effects of bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes as a barrier membrane on guided bone regeneration (GBR) in comparison with those of the resorbable collagen membranes. MATERIALS AND METHODS. BC membranes were fabricated using biomimetic technology. Surface properties were analyzed, Mechanical properties were measured, in vitro cell proliferation test were performed with NIH3T3 cells and in vivo study were performed with rat calvarial defect and histomorphometric analysis was done. The Mann-Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon signed rank test was used (α<.05). RESULTS. BC membrane showed significantly higher mechanical properties such as wet tensile strength than collagen membrane and represented a three-dimensional multilayered structure cross-linked by nano-fibers with 60 % porosity. In vitro study, cell adhesion and proliferation were observed on BC membrane. However, morphology of the cells was found to be less differentiated, and the cell proliferation rate was lower than those of the cells on collagen membrane. In vivo study, the grafted BC membrane did not induce inflammatory response, and maintained adequate space for bone regeneration. An amount of new bone formation in defect region loaded with BC membrane was significantly similar to that of collagen membrane application. CONCLUSION. Polyurethane (PU) is a very popular polymer that is used in a variety of applications due to its good mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. However, PU recycling has received significant attention due to environmental issues. In this study, we developed a recycling method for waste PU that utilizes the radiation grafting technique. Grafting of waste PU was carried out using a radiation technique with polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA). The PE-g-MA-grafted PU/high density polyethylene (HDPE) composite was prepared by melt-blending at various concentrations (0-10 phr) of PE-g-MA-grafted PU. The composites were characterized using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and their surface morphology and thermal/mechanical properties are reported. For 1 phr PU, the PU could be easily introduced to the HDPE during the melt processing in the blender after the radiation-induced grafting of PU with PE-g-MA. PE-g-MA was easily reacted with PU according to the increasing radiation dose and was located at the interface between the PU and the HDPE during the melt processing in the blender, which improved the interfacial interactions and the mechanical properties of the resultant composites. A mucoadhesive drug delivery system can improve the effectiveness of a drug by maintaining the drug concentration and allowing targeting and localization of the drug at a specific site. Acrylic-based hydrogels have been used extensively as a mucoadhesive system owing to their flexibility and excellent bioadhesion. In this experiment, poly(acrylic acid) was selected to prepare the bioadhesive hydrogel adhering to mucosal surfaces using a radiation process. Poly(acrylic acid) was dissolved in water to a prepare poly(acrylic acid) solution, and the solution was then irradiated by an electron beam at up to 75 kGy to make hydrogels. Their physical properties, such as gel percent, swelling percent and adhesive strength to mucosal surfaces, were investigated. Triamcinolone acetonide was used as a model drug. The dried poly(acrylic acid) film was dipped in a 0.1 wt% triamcinolone acetonide solution in ethanol, and then dried at 25 °C. The release of triamcinolone acetonide was determined at different time intervals, and UV (Ultraviolet)-Vis spectroscopy was used to determine the released concentration of triamcinolone acetonide at 238 nm. In this study, we developed a one step process to synthesize nanogel containing silver nanoparticles involving electron beam irradiation. Water-soluble silver nitrate powder is dissolved in the distilled water and then poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) and hexane are put into this silver nitrate solution. These samples are irradiated by an electron beam to make the PAAc nanogels containing silver nanoparticles (Ag/PAAc nanogels). The nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). In addition, the particle size and zeta-potential were confirmed by a particle size analyzer (PSA). The antibacterial properties of the nanogels were evaluated by paper diffusion test. The Ag/PAAc nanogels had an antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The nanogels also demonstrated a good healing effect against diabetic ulcer. The size of the Ag/PAAc nanogels decreased with increasing irradiation doses, and the absolute value of the zeta potential increased with increasing irradiation doses. Also, the Ag/PAAc nanogels exhibited good antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In in vivo wound healing, the Ag/PAAc nanogels have a good healing effect. To evaluate the efficiency of carboxymethylchitosan (CM‐chitosan)‐based hydrogels as barriers for reducing postsurgical adhesions, CM‐chitosan was synthesized to simplify the hydrogel‐making process, and the CM‐chitosan solutions were cross‐linked by using γ‐ray irradiation to create the desired hydrogels instead of using chemical cross‐linking reagents. The prepared CM‐chitosan hydrogels were characterized by a FTIR spectroscopy, swelling behavior, gel‐fraction content,and mechanical property such as gel strength of a hydrogel and the results showed a good swelling behavior and mechanical properties. Also, the radiation‐induced CM‐chitosan hydrogels significantly reduced and inhibited the postsurgical adhesions in the rat models. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A nanoporous high-density polyethylene (HDPE) membrane was prepared by a wet process. Soybean oil and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) were premixed as codiluents, and gamma-rays were used for the cross-linking of HDPE. The pore volume of the nanoporous HDPE membranes with soybean oil was affected by the extracted amount of oil. The tensile strength of the membrane improved with an increasing absorbed dose up to 60 kGy, but decreased at 80 kGy due to severe degradation. The ionic conductivity of the nanoporous HDPE membrane did not really change with an increasing absorbed dose because the pores had already been formed before the gamma-ray radiation. Finally, the electrochemical stability of the HDPE membrane increased when the absorbed dose increased up to 60 kGy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
