Abstract Light engineering of correlated states in topological materials provides a new avenue of achieving exotic topological phases inaccessible by conventional tuning methods. Here we demonstrate a light control of correlation gaps in a model charge-density-wave (CDW) and polaron insulator (TaSe4)2I recently predicted to be an axion insulator. Our ultrafast terahertz photocurrent spectroscopy reveals a two-step, non-thermal melting of polarons and electronic CDW gap via the fluence dependence of a longitudinal circular photogalvanic current. This helicity-dependent photocurrent reveals continuous ultrafast phase switches from the polaronic state to the CDW (axion) phase, and finally to a hidden Weyl phase as the pump fluence increases. Additional distinctive attributes aligning with the light-induced switches include: the mode-selective coupling of coherent phonons to the polaron and CDW modulation, and the emergence of a non-thermal chiral photocurrent above the pump threshold of CDW-related phonons. The demonstrated ultrafast chirality control of correlated topological states here holds large potentials for realizing axion electrodynamics and advancing quantum-computing applications.

Topologically protected surface current is highly promising for next-generation low-dissipation and disorder-tolerant quantum electronics and computing. Yet, electric transport from the co-existing bulk state dominates the responses of the Dirac surface state, especially at elevated temperatures relevant to technological applications. Here, we present an approach that convincingly showcases the generation, disentanglement, and precise control of enduring surface charge carriers on a topological insulator, Bi2Se3, with high bulk conductivity, all achieved at room temperature. By using pump–probe modulation spectroscopy under ultrabroadband driving tunable from 4 meV to 1.55 eV, we show the terahertz (THz) field-induced surface carriers by discovering their initial temporal responses dominant over high density trivial bulk carriers. Strikingly, the response of the induced surface carrier responses persists for more than ∼5 ps and is enhanced by reducing pump photon energy. The dynamics and lifetime of the distinct surface response manifest themselves as the enhanced THz pump-induced THz transmission, which directly correlates with the transient negative THz conductivity. Increasing the THz driving field reduces the induced surface carrier lifetime and identifies, particularly, an optimal pump field of Es ∼ 224 kV cm−1 for generating the dominant surface response relative to the bulk. This surface carrier dominant regime is suppressed by a joint effect of enhanced surface-bulk scattering and a more rapid saturation of surface excitation compared to the bulk that sets in above Es. The controllability of room temperature topologically surface carriers through pump photon energy offer compelling possibilities for extending this approach to other topological complex materials.

Quantum embedding (QE) methods such as the ghost Gutzwiller approximation (gGA) offer a powerful approach to simulating strongly correlated systems, but come with the computational bottleneck of computing the ground state of an auxiliary embedding Hamiltonian (EH) iteratively. In this work, we introduce an active learning (AL) framework integrated within the gGA to address this challenge. The methodology is applied to the single-band Hubbard model and results in a significant reduction in the number of instances where the EH must be solved. Through a principal component analysis (PCA), we find that the EH parameters form a low-dimensional structure that is largely independent of the geometric specifics of the systems, especially in the strongly correlated regime. Our AL strategy enables us to discover this low-dimensionality structure on the fly, while leveraging it for reducing the computational cost of gGA, laying the groundwork for more efficient simulations of complex strongly correlated materials.

Terahertz radiation has wide array of potential uses, however, finding robust and tunable sources of terahertz radiation has been challenging. Here, Cong et al demonstrate a room temperature terahertz source composed of a two-dimensional hybrid metal halide and ferromagnetic heterostructure.

This research aims to study the damaging effect of underground blasting mining pillars on adjacent cemented filling bodies. The filling bodies were made by mixing ore rock with ash sand by the ratio of 1 : 4 and 1 : 6, respectively, which were subjected to cyclic impact tests with the split-Hopkinson pressure bar under the pressure of 0.2 MPa and 0.24 MPa to analyze the energy dissipation characteristics and damage law. The results showed that as the stress wave induced by the cyclic impact was transmitted to the composite specimen, the energy was absorbed for crack growth and development. Then, the energy reflection ratio increased while the energy dissipation ratio and transmission ratio decreased. For the combined specimen with the cement-sand ratio of 1 : 4, after five cycles of impact under the condition of Ip = 0.2 MPa, the damage variables were 0.07, 0.11, 0.51, and 0.56, respectively, since the second time; under the condition of Ip = 0.24 MPa, the damage variables were 0.17, 0.29, 0.55, and 0.66, respectively. After reaching the damage threshold of 0.63, the damage variable showed nonlinearity. Moreover, it was found that the mechanical properties of the filling body affect the whole combined specimen, and the dynamic strength of the combined specimen with the cement-sand ratio of 1 : 4 was higher than that of the cement-sand ratio of 1 : 6. Therefore, it can be concluded that during the two-step pillar recovery, the amount of blasting explosive can be appropriately reduced, and the number of blasting can be increased to reduce the damaging effect of blasting impact on the cemented pillar and reserved pillar to maintain stability.

Quantum many-body scars are an intriguing dynamical regime in which quantum systems exhibit coherent dynamics and long-range correlations when prepared in certain initial states. We use this combination of coherence and many-body correlations to benchmark the performance of present-day quantum computing devices by using them to simulate the dynamics of an antiferromagnetic initial state in mixed-field Ising chains of up to 19 sites. In addition to calculating the dynamics of local observables, we also calculate the Loschmidt echo and a nontrivial unequal-time connected correlation function that witnesses long-range many-body correlations in the scarred dynamics. We find coherent dynamics to persist over up to 40 Trotter steps even in the presence of various sources of error. To obtain these results, we leverage a variety of error-mitigation techniques including noise tailoring, zero-noise extrapolation, dynamical decoupling, and physically motivated postselection of measurement results. Crucially, we also find that using pulse-level control to implement the Ising interaction yields a substantial improvement over the standard controlled-not-based compilation of this interaction. Our results demonstrate the power of error-mitigation techniques and pulse-level control to probe many-body coherence and correlation effects on present-day quantum hardware.

We use cryogenic spatial–temporal photoluminescence (PL) imaging measurements down to 10 K and with short-wavelength, 405 nm laser excitation to study surface charge generation, trapping, and recombination at single bright and dark grains as well as their boundaries in model methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) polycrystalline thin films. These salient conditions are shown to be critical for identifying both the detrimental and cooperative roles of grain microstructures where the dark grains serve as the PL quenching center, while the grain boundaries are largely benign and may promote electron–hole separation.

The generation of bound electron and hole pairs—excitons—is a key process in photovoltaic technologies, yet it is challenging to follow their initial dynamics. Here, Luoet al. probe the Rydberg eigenstates that characterize the excitonic transport and coherent conversion in a perovskite material.

Rapid progress in noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computing technology has led to the development of novel resource-efficient hybrid quantum-classical algorithms, such as the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), that can address open challenges in quantum chemistry, physics, and material science. Proof-of-principle quantum chemistry simulations for small molecules have been demonstrated on NISQ devices. While several approaches have been theoretically proposed for correlated materials, NISQ simulations of interacting periodic models on current quantum devices have not yet been demonstrated. Here, we develop a hybrid quantum-classical simulation framework for correlated electron systems based on the Gutzwiller variational embedding approach. We implement this framework on Rigetti quantum processing units (QPUs) and apply it to the periodic Anderson model, which describes a correlated heavy electron band hybridizing with noninteracting conduction electrons. Our simulation results quantitatively reproduce the known ground state quantum phase diagram including metallic, Kondo and Mott insulating phases. This is the first fully self-consistent hybrid quantum-classical simulation of an infinite correlated lattice model executed on QPUs, demonstrating that the Gutzwiller hybrid quantum-classical embedding framework is a powerful approach to simulate correlated materials on NISQ hardware. This benchmark study also puts forth a concrete pathway towards practical quantum advantage on NISQ devices.

We develop a new implementation of the Gutzwiller approximation in combination with the local density approximation, which enables us to study complex 4f and 5f systems beyond the reach of previous approaches. We calculate from first principles the zero-temperature phase diagram and electronic structure of Pr and Pu, finding good agreement with the experiments. Our study of Pr indicates that its pressure-induced volume-collapse transition would not occur without change of lattice structure—contrarily to Ce. Our study of Pu shows that the most important effect originating the differentiation between the equilibrium densities of its allotropes is the competition between the Peierls effect and the Madelung interaction and not the dependence of the electron correlations on the lattice structure.

We report a first-principles study of the electronic structure of functionalized graphene nanoribbon (aGNRs-f) by an organic functional group (CH2C6H5) and find that CH2C6H5 functionalized group does not produce any electronic states in the gap and the band gap is direct. By changing both the density of the organic functional group and the width of the aGNRs-f, a band gap tuning exhibits a fine three-family behaviour through the side effect. Meanwhile, the carriers at the conduction band minimum and the valence band maximum are located in both CH2C6H5 and aGNR regions when the density of CH2C6H5 is big, while they distribute dominantly in aGNR conversely. The fine band gap modulation effects make aGNRs-f good candidates with high quantum efficiency and a significantly wider wavelength range from 750 to 93 924 nm for lasers, light-emitting diodes and photodetectors due to the direct band gap and small carrier effective masses. We derive an exact operatorial reformulation of the rotational invariant slave boson method, and we apply it to describe the orbital differentiation in strongly correlated electron systems starting from first principles. The approach enables us to treat strong electron correlations, spin-orbit coupling, and crystal field splittings on the same footing by exploiting the gauge invariance of the mean-field equations. We apply our theory to the archetypical nuclear fuel UO2 and show that the ground state of this system displays a pronounced orbital differentiation within the 5f manifold, with Mott-localized G8 and extended G7 electrons. We argue that, because of quantum entanglement, the local physics of strongly correlated materials at zero temperature is described in a very good approximation by a simple generalized Gibbs distribution, which depends on a relatively small number of local quantum thermodynamical potentials. We demonstrate that our statement is exact in certain limits and present numerical calculations of the iron compounds FeSe and FeTe and of the elemental cerium by employing the Gutzwiller approximation that strongly support our theory in general. Structures and magnetic properties of Fe16−xCoxN2 are studied using adaptive genetic algorithm and first-principles calculations. We show that substituting Fe with Co in Fe16N2 with a Co/Fe ratio ≤1 can greatly improve the magnetic anisotropy of the material. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy from first-principles calculations reaches 3.18MJ/m³ (245.6 μeV per metal atom) for Fe12Co4N2, much larger than that of Fe16N2, and is one of the largest among the reported rare-earth-free magnets. From our systematic crystal structure searches, we show that there is a structure transition from tetragonal Fe16N2 to cubic Co16N2 in Fe16−xCoxN2 as the Co concentration increases, which can be well explained by electron counting analysis. Different magnetic properties between the Fe-rich (x ≤ 8) and Co-rich (x>8) Fe16−xCoxN2 is closely related to the structural transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The insulating ground state of the 5d transition metal oxide CaIrO3 has been classified as a Mott-type insulator. Based on a systematic density functional theory (DFT) study with local, semilocal, and hybrid exchange-correlation functionals, we reveal that the Ir t2g states exhibit large splittings and one-dimensional electronic states along the c axis due to a tetragonal crystal field. Our hybrid DFT calculation adequately describes the antiferromagnetic (AFM) order along the c direction via a superexchange interaction between Ir4+ spins. Furthermore, the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) hybridizes the t2g states to open an insulating gap. These results indicate that CaIrO3 can be represented as a spin-orbit Slater insulator, driven by the interplay between a long-range AFM order and the SOC. Such a Slater mechanism for the gap formation is also demonstrated by the DFT + dynamical mean field theory calculation, where the metal-insulator transition and the paramagnetic to AFM phase transition are concomitant with each other. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the two-dimensional (2D) heavy-fermion superconductor, Ce2RhIn8. The Fermi surface is rather complicated and consists of several hole and electron pockets with one of the sheets displaying strong nesting properties with a q vector of (0.32, 0.32) π/a. We do not observe kz dispersion of the Fermi sheets, which is consistent with the expected 2D character of the electronic structure. Comparison of the ARPES data to band-structure calculations suggests that a localized picture of the f electrons works best. While there is some agreement in the overall band dispersion and location of the Fermi sheets, the model does not reproduce all observed bands and is not completely accurate for those it does. Our data paves the way for improving the band-structure calculations and the general understanding of the transport and thermodynamical properties of this material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
