Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of kombucha on the surface of composite resins and to examine the degradation-inhibiting effect of adding calcium to kombucha. Methods: Six experimental groups were established, with three types of liquid kombucha: one with 3% added calcium, carbonated water as a positive control, and mineral water as a negative control. The pH and titratable acidity values of the experimental groups were measured. The samples were filled with condensed composite resin and placed in the experimental drinks for 5, 15, 30, and 60 minutes. The Vickers microhardness of the surface was measured before and after immersion, and the changes were compared. Results: The pH values of the experimental group were I’m alive (2.87±0.02), Hollys (2.95±0.01), Ediya (2.99±0.01), I’m alive +3% Ca (4.09±0.01), carbonated water (4.66±0.01), and mineral water (7.67±0.02). I’m alive (–12.35) showed the largest reduction in surface hardness, followed by Hollys (–9.78), carbonated water (–7.97), I’m alive +3% Ca (–7.82), Ediya (–7.60), and mineral water (–1.56). In the Vickers microhardness measurements, all experimental groups, except for the mineral water group, showed significant differences (p＜0.05). The scanning electron microscope results showed that the experimental group and positive control had rough surfaces and micropores. Conclusion: The surface hardness was significantly reduced in all experimental groups except for water. In particular, in the case of kombucha with low pH, the reduction rate increased, weakening the physical properties of the material. In addition, the reduction rate of surface hardness was lower in kombucha with added calcium, and it is believed that drinking kombucha containing calcium can minimize the erosion of dental materials.

Prostate cancer accounts for 14% of male cancer-related fatalities in the UK. Given the challenges associated with hormone-based therapies in the context of androgen-independent prostate cancer, there is an imperative need for research into anticancer drugs. N0821, a peptide belonging to the Trp-Arg dense region and derived from the homologous region of various bee species, shows substantial potential for an anticancer effect. Both MTT assays and 3D spheroid assays were conducted to substantiate its antiproliferation potential and strongly indicated the antiproliferation effect of N0820 (WWWWRWWRKI) and N0821 (YWWWWRWWRKI). Notably, the mechanism underlying this effect is related to the downregulation of CCNA2 and the upregulation of CCNE1. Cell cycle arrest results from the reduction of CCNA2 in the S/G2 phase, leading to the accumulation of CCNE1. Our peptides were predicted to make an α-helix structure. This can act as an ion channel in the cell membrane. Therefore, we analyzed genes implicated in the influx of calcium ions into the mitochondria. Trp-Arg dense-region peptides are known for their antibacterial properties in targeting cell membranes, making the development of resistance less likely. Hence, further research in this area is essential and promising.

Objective: To examine the inhibitory effect of Hydrangea serrata extract against hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells and its underlying mechanisms. Methods: The effects of Hydrangea serrata extract on growth inhibition of tumor cells and spheroids were assessed using MTT and 3D culture assays. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot analyses were employed to investigate the changes in mRNA and protein expression levels of molecules related to cell cycle and apoptosis. Results: Hydrangea serrata extract effectively inhibited the growth of both tumor cells and spheroids. The extract also significantly upregulated p27 mRNA expression and downregulated CDK2 mRNA expression, leading to cell cycle arrest. Moreover, increased BAX/Bcl-2 ratio as well as caspase-9 and - 3 were observed after treatment with Hydrangea serrata extract, indicating the induction of tumor cell apoptosis. Conclusions: Hydrangea serrata extract has the potential to alleviate tumors by effectively modulating cell-cycle-related gene expressions and inducing apoptosis, thereby inhibiting tumor growth.

Abstract Glaucoma is a multifactorial disease where various systemic features are involved in the progression of the disease. Based on initial systemic profiles in electronic medical records, this study aimed to develop a model predicting factors of long-term rapid retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning over 5 years in 505 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Eyes with faster or slower RNFL thinning were stratified using a decision tree model, and systemic and ophthalmic data were incorporated into the models based on random forest and permutation methods, with the models interpreted by Shapley additive explanation plots (SHAP). According to the decision tree, a higher lymphocyte ratio (> 34.65%) was the most important systemic variable discriminating faster or slower RNFL thinning. Higher mean corpuscular hemoglobin (> 32.05 pg) and alkaline phosphatase (> 88.0 IU/L) concentrations were distinguishing factors in the eyes with lymphocyte ratios > 34.65% and

With the continuous development of artificial intelligence technology, there have been attempts to utilize AI in the field of linguistics. In this context, research and development in AI-based Chinese character recognition technology has spanned 40 years, with its outcomes attracting significant attention. However, in the field of Chinese character recognition, the research into offline handwritten recognition technology is particularly challenging due to the unique characteristics of handwritten Chinese characters. The main issue in current research is the significant decrease in accuracy for characters composed of similar components or characters with similar overall shapes. The focus of research solutions has been on modern mechanical programming and other engineering aspects, while research that integrates the inherent characteristics of Chinese characters themselves has been relatively overlooked. The author believes that combining engineering technology research with a deeper understanding of the nature of Chinese characters can solve many of the current problems. This paper reviews the current state of related domestic and international research to identify areas with significant potential for improvement and progress in research, and finally proposes directions for future research.

Background: This study tries to compare and analyze the removal effect of dental plaque of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice and quantify the results to provide basic data so that consumers can make reasonable choices when purchasing dentifrice, and also increase interest in the dental plaque.Methods: After forming a dental plaque (carbohydrate porridge) on the labial surface of the bovine teeth, a disclosing agent was applied. Then the same experimenter brushed the surface of the bovine teeth using an electric toothbrush and took photographs using a DSLR camera. Thereafter, the residual amount of dental plaque was analyzed using the ImageJ program, and SPSS 26.0 was used for statistical processing.Results: The average residual amount of dental plaque using the general dentifrice was 11.71% for Perio, 9.45% for Cliden, and 8.47% for 2080, and the average residual amount for the three types was approximately 9.88%. The average residual amount of dental plaque of pregnant women’s dentifrice was 13.95% for Jeninmothers, 12.53% for Tntnmoms, and 12.63% for Mommiracle, and the average residual amount of the three types was approximately 13.04%. On comparing the average residual amount of dental plaque between general and pregnant women’s dentifrices, it was observed to be 3.16% higher for the latter. However, the results were not statistically significant.Conclusion: According to the research results, there was no significant difference in removal effects of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice. In addition, when a pregnant woman uses the right toothbrushing method with pregnant women’s dentifrice, it can prevent or inhibit the progression of the gestational periodontal disease. Therefore, we recommend pregnant women to use pregnant women’s dentifrices.

Both defensin and inflammation are part of the human innate immune system that responds rapidly to pathogens. The combination of defensins with pro- or anti-inflammatory effects can be a potential research direction for the treatment of infection by pathogens. This study aimed to identify whether MSF (Miracle Synergy material made using Filipendula glaberrima), a probiotic lysate of Filipendula glaberrima extracts fermented with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum K8, activates the expression of human β-defensin (HBD2 and HBD3) to protect the host against pathogens and inhibit inflammation caused by S. aureus, in vitro with Western blot analysis, qRT-PCR and in vivo studies with a mouse model were used to evaluate the effects of MSF. The MSF treatment induced HBD2 and HBD3 expression via the p38 and NF-κB pathways. Furthermore, MSF treatment significantly reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8), also through p38 and NF-κB in S. aureus-induced inflammatory condition. MSF treatment remarkably reduced erythema in mice ears caused by the injection of S. aureus, while K8 lysate treatment did not initiate a strong recovery. Taken together, MSF induced the expression of HBD2 and HDB3 and activated anti-inflammatory activity more than the probiotic lysates of L. plantarum K8. These findings show that MSF is a potential defensin inducer and anti-inflammatory agent.

The 5G networks aim to realize a massive Internet of Things (IoT) environment with low latency. IoT devices with weak security can cause Tbps-level Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on 5G mobile networks. Therefore, interest in automatic network intrusion detection using machine learning (ML) technology in 5G networks is increasing. ML-based DDoS attack detection in a 5G environment should provide ultra-low latency. To this end, utilizing a feature-selection process that reduces computational complexity and improves performance by identifying features important for learning in large datasets is possible. Existing ML-based DDoS detection technology mostly focuses on DDoS detection learning models on the wired Internet. In addition, studies on feature engineering related to 5G traffic are relatively insufficient. Therefore, this study performed feature selection experiments to reduce the time complexity of detecting and analyzing large-capacity DDoS attacks in real time based on ML in a 5G core network environment. The results of the experiment showed that the performance was maintained and improved when the feature selection process was used. In particular, as the size of the dataset increased, the difference in time complexity increased rapidly. The experiments show that the real-time detection of large-scale DDoS attacks in 5G core networks is possible using the feature selection process. This demonstrates the importance of the feature selection process for removing noisy features before training and detection. As this study conducted a feature study to detect network traffic passing through the 5G core with low latency using ML, it is expected to contribute to improving the performance of the 5G network DDoS attack automation detection technology using AI technology.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a degenerative brain disease that is the most common cause of dementia. The incidence of AD is rapidly rising because of the aging of the world population. Because AD is presently incurable, early diagnosis is very important. The disease is characterized by pathological changes such as deposition of senile plaques and decreased concentration of the amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) peptide in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The concentration of Aβ42 in the CSF is a well-studied AD biomarker. The specific peptide probe was screened through four rounds of biopanning, which included the phage display process. The screened peptide showed strong binding affinity in the micromolar range, and the enzyme-linked peptide assay was optimized using the peptide we developed. This diagnostic method showed specificity toward Aβ42 in the presence of other proteins. The peptide-binding site was also estimated using molecular docking analysis. Finally, the diagnostic method we developed could significantly distinguish patients who were classified based on amyloid PET images.

Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder characterized by postural or kinetic tremor. We aimed to evaluate median nerve enlargement in patients with ET using ultrasonography (USG). Thirty-eight hands from 19 patients with ET and 24 hands from 13 controls underwent nerve conduction studies (NCS) and USG at the wrist. The efficacy of an in-package microbial inactivation method, combining H2O2 and atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge cold plasma (ADCP) treatments (H2O2-ADCP), in reducing contamination of Brassica oleracea (cabbage) slices was investigated. Cabbage slices were placed in a polyethylene terephthalate container with a H2O2-soaked polypropylene pad attached to the inside of the lid, followed by subjecting the closed container to ADCP treatment. The H2O2-ADCP treatment inactivated Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes, resulting in reductions of 1.8 and 2.0 log CFU/g, respectively, which were greater than the sum of the inactivation effects observed with each individual treatment. The combined treatment decreased the count of Bacillus cereus spores and indigenous bacteria by 1.0 log spores/g and 1.3 log CFU/g, respectively. Moreover, the in-package method did not alter the moisture content or texture of cabbage slices. We aimed to evaluate the clinical features of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and risk factors for severe RSV disease among Korean children in 2022/2023. A total of 235 children were identified, and 84.3% were hospitalized. Patients under 3 months and 2 years of age accounted for 20.9% and 54.5%, respectively. Pneumonia was diagnosed in 40.9% of children and bronchiolitis in 23.8%. Respiratory support and intensive care were required in 43.4% and 7.7% of patients, respectively. Haemophilus influenzae nasopharyngeal colonization and the presence of underlying disease showed a significant correlation with severity indicators. Soy protein isolate (SPI) has garnered researchers' attention due to its abundance, costeffectiveness, excellent biocompatibility, hemo-compatibility, and biodegradability. However, SPI faces limitations in application due to poor processability and weak mechanical strength. Substantial efforts have been made to address these challenges. In this preliminary study, glycerol and biofibers were added to SPI to improve the mechanical properties and film forming, and glyoxal was employed to crosslink SPI molecules. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting SPI/composite films were evaluated. A 15% addition of glycerol proved sufficient for good film formation. Among the biofibers, short SF microfibers were the most effective in enhancing breaking strength, while TEMPO-oxidized CNF (cellulose nanofiber) excelled among CNFs. Crosslinking with glyoxal significantly enhanced the mechanical properties, with the type of biofiber minimally affecting the mechanical properties of the crosslinked SPI composite films. With the commercialization of 5th-generation mobile communications (5G) networks, a large-scale internet of things (IoT) environment is being built. Security is becoming increasingly crucial in 5G network environments due to the growing risk of various distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks across vast IoT devices. Recently, research on automated intrusion detection using machine learning (ML) for 5G environments has been actively conducted. However, 5G traffic has insufficient data due to privacy protection problems and imbalance problems with significantly fewer attack data. If this data is used to train an ML model, it will likely suffer from generalization errors due to not training enough different features on the attack data. Therefore, this paper aims to study a training method to mitigate the generalization error problem of the ML model that classifies IoT DDoS attacks even under conditions of insufficient and imbalanced 5G traffic. We built a 5G testbed to construct a 5G dataset for training to solve the problem of insufficient data. To solve the imbalance problem, synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) and generative adversarial network (GAN)-based conditional tabular GAN (CTGAN) of data augmentation were used. The performance of the trained ML models was compared and meaningfully analyzed regarding the generalization error problem. The experimental results showed that CTGAN decreased the accuracy and f1-score compared to the Baseline. Still, regarding the generalization error, the difference between the validation and test results was reduced by at least 1.7 and up to 22.88 times, indicating an improvement in the problem. This result suggests that the ML model training method that utilizes CTGANs to augment attack data for training data in the 5G environment mitigates the generalization error problem. In this study, the structural characteristics of sericin recovered from wastewater released from the silk textile industry (Plant sericin) were comparatively analyzed with those of sericin extracted from a silkworm cocoon produced in a laboratory (Lab sericin). To prepare Plant sericin, ethanol was added to wastewater (i.e., a sericin aqueous solution) after the degumming process to remove nonprotein materials, affording a sericin precipitate. To prepare Lab sericin, nonprotein materials were removed from a silkworm cocoon and sericin was subsequently extracted from the cocoon. Lab sericin and Plant sericin exhibited similar solution viscosities, gel strengths, and crystallinity indices, indicative of the similar molecular weights (MWs) of the two sericin samples. In the case of sericin powder, Plant sericin was more crystalline than Lab sericin due to its treatment with ethanol. The findings of this study revealed that sericin recovered from industrial wastewater can be used equally as its MW is similar to that of sericin obtained through laboratory-scale extraction. In this research, the silk web was hot-pressed for various times, the effect of press time on the structure and mechanical properties of silk non-woven fabric was also investigated. The yellowing appeared in the silk non-woven fabric and became more apparent as press time was increased. The crystallinity of silk was decreased by the hot press treatment and it did not change significantly with an increase of hot press time. The porosity of silk non-woven fabric was constantly decreased until 120 s and it did not change much after that. The thickness of silk non-woven fabric was significantly decreased by a press time of 10 s and slightly decreased with a further increase of hot press time. The hot press treatment increased the maximum stress and elongation of silk non-woven fabrics. The press time had a significant impact on the mechanical properties of silk non-woven fabric, with 90 s being the optimum condition for the best work of rupture of silk non-woven fabric. Background: Tofacitinib and ruxolitinib have been used off-label to treat alopecia areata. Although a number of case reports and small studies have been published, there are no comprehensive reviews examining the outcomes of using tofacitinib and ruxolitinib for the treatment of alopecia areata.Aims: The aim of the study was to examine the outcome of patients with alopecia areata treated with oral tofacitinib or ruxolitinib in previously published studies.Methods: A search of MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane library was conducted. A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed focusing on the Severity of Alopecia Tool 50 achievement rate, the frequency of adverse events and recurrence after discontinuation of treatment.Results: A total of 1244 studies were identified of which only 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. Of the 346 patients in these 12 studies, 288 had received oral tofacitinib and 58 had received oral ruxolitinib. The overall Severity of Alopecia Tool50 achievement rate was 66% (95% confidence interval, 54%-76%). Subgroup analysis revealed that drug choice, mean age, sex ratio and alopecia areata subtype ratio did not significantly affect the treatment response. Infections and laboratory abnormalities were the most common adverse events (98 and 65 cases of 319 patients, respectively). Patients treated for more than six months had a greater frequency of laboratory abnormalities as compared to those treated for shorter durations (24% vs. 7%; P = 0.04). Recurrence of alopecia areata was observed within three months after discontinuation of treatment in the majority (74%) of patients.Limitations: This analysis was limited by the small number of observational studies available for review, the heterogeneity of patient characteristics and the lack of long-term data.Conclusion: Both oral tofacitinib and ruxolitinib are effective and well tolerated in the treatment of alopecia areata. Clinicians should be aware of the expected efficacy, adverse events and high recurrence rate of oral JAK inhibitors for alopecia areata to effectively counsel these patients before starting therapy. Objective To compare the convenience and effectiveness of the existing lumbosacral orthoses (LSO) (classic LSO and Cybertech) and a newly developed LSO (V-LSO) by analyzing postoperative data. Methods This prospective cohort study was performed from May 2019 to November 2019 and enrolled and analyzed 88 patients with degenerative lumbar spine disease scheduled for elective lumbar surgery. Three types of LSO that were provided according to the time of patient registration were applied for 6 weeks. Patients were randomized into the classic LSO group (n=31), Cybertech group (n=26), and V-LSO group (n=31). All patients were assessed using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) preoperatively and underwent plain lumbar radiography (anteroposterior and lateral views) 10 days postoperatively. Lumbar lordosis (LS angle) and frontal imbalance were measured with and without LSO. At the sixth postoperative week, a follow-up assessment with the ODI and orthosis questionnaire was conducted. Results No significant differences were found among the three groups in terms of the LS angle, frontal imbalance, ODI, and orthosis questionnaire results. When the change in the LS angle and frontal imbalance toward the reference value was defined as a positive change with and without LSO, the rate of positive change was significantly different in the V-LSO group (LS angle: 41.94% vs. 61.54% vs. 83.87%; p=0.003). Conclusion The newly developed LSO showed no difference regarding its effectiveness and compliance when compared with the existing LSO, but it was more effective in correcting lumbar lordosis. Prey have evolved a range of traits to enhance their survival against predators. These traits often show geographical variation due to the differences in local predation pressure. To date, there exists ample evidence of the geographical variation in single anti-predator traits such as coloration induced by differential predation. However, predation pressure often induces the shift in a suite of (correlated) prey traits, such as coloration and behavior, rather than a single trait in nature. In this study, we investigated the nature and extent of geographical variation in both color and behavioral traits in the oriental fire-bellied toad, Bombina orientalis, testing whether the frogs experience different predation pressure in different sites and evaluating how this might affect a range of traits associated with predator avoidance. Specifically, we quantified dorsal/ventral coloration, daytime resting place (i.e. the place where each frog was first spotted), and activity levels of natural populations of the frogs in 9 geographically distinct sites distributed across South Korea. We found the clearest differences in these traits between mainland and Jeju Island populations, with Jeju Island frogs exhibiting 1) less bright and less chromatic aposematic ventral coloration than mainland frogs, 2) lower activity during both day and night, and 3) a tendency to rest underwater. Follow-up predation experiments using clay frog models found that frogs in Jeju Island suffer higher predation pressure than mainland frogs, which readily explains the divergence in behavioral and morphological traits among populations. Declines in amphibian populations are occurring worldwide, and have been attributed to many factors, including anthropogenic environmental changes. One of the ramifications of such declines is abnormalities in many amphibian species. A strong association has been detected between human activities and abnormalities in amphibian populations, but studies on this association are largely focused on lentic species. In this study, it was analyzed whether the degree of local human activity was associated with the rate of abnormalities in Bombina orientalis which inhabited lotic environments. We found that the proportions of abnormalities in wild populations of B. orientalis increased, when i) the closest human land use was located within 100 m from the frogs' habitat, and ii) the proportion of human land use within a 300-m radius was high. Our findings suggest that human activity has a negative impact on the fitness of nearby amphibian populations, and that wild populations very close to human-induced disturbance are affected. Twelve plant species were collected from the east coast of Korea to identify culturable endophytes present in their roots. The fungal internal transcribe spacer (ITS) region (ITS1-5.8SrRNA-ITS2) was used as a DNA barcode for identification of fungi. A total of 194 fungal strains were identified and categorized into 31 genera. The genus Penicillium accounted for the largest number of strains, followed by the genus Aspergillus. Furthermore, using 5 statistical methods, the diversity indices of the fungi were calculated at the genus level. After comprehensive evaluation, the endophytic fungal group from Phragmites australis ranked highest in diversity analyses. Several strains responsible for plant growth and survival (Penicillium citrinum, P funiculosum, P janthinellum, P restrictum, and P. simplicissimum), were also identified. Abstract Background The cholinergic neurotransmitter system is crucial to cognitive function, with the basal forebrain (BF) being particularly susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. However, the interaction of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) in cholinergic pathways and BF atrophy without amyloid pathology remains poorly understood. Methods We enrolled patients who underwent neuropsychological tests, magnetic resonance imaging, and 18F-florbetaben positron emission tomography due to cognitive impairment at the teaching university hospital from 2015 to 2022. Among these, we selected patients with negative amyloid scans and additionally excluded those with Parkinson’s dementia that may be accompanied by BF atrophy. The WMH burden of cholinergic pathways was quantified by the Cholinergic Pathways Hyperintensities Scale (CHIPS) score, and categorized into tertile groups because the CHIPS score did not meet normal distribution. Segmentation of the BF on volumetric T1-weighted MRI was performed using FreeSurfer, then was normalized for total intracranial volume. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between BF volumes and CHIPS scores. Results A total of 187 patients were enrolled. The median CHIPS score was 12 [IQR 5.0; 24.0]. The BF volume of the highest CHIPS tertile group (mean ± SD, 3.51 ± 0.49, CHIPSt3) was significantly decreased than those of the lower CHIPS tertile groups (3.75 ± 0.53, CHIPSt2; 3.83 ± 0.53, CHIPSt1; P = 0.02). In the univariable regression analysis, factors showing significant associations with the BF volume were the CHIPSt3 group, age, female, education, diabetes mellitus, smoking, previous stroke history, periventricular WMH, and cerebral microbleeds. Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) neuromodulation emerges as a promising non-invasive approach for improving neurological conditions. Extinction of conditioned fear has served as a prime model for exposure-based therapies for anxiety disorders. We investigated whether tFUS stimulation to a critical brain area, the infralimbic subdivision of the prefrontal cortex (IL), could facilitate fear extinction using rats. In a series of experiments, tFUS was delivered to the IL of a freely-moving rat and compared to sham stimulation (tFUS vs. SHAM). Initially, Fos expression in the IL was measured shortly after the stimulation. The results show that Fos expression was significantly increased in the IL but not in the neighboring regions compared to SHAM. Subsequently, two groups of rats were subjected to fear conditioning, extinction, and retention while receiving stimulation during the extinction. Rats in the tFUS group froze significantly less than SHAM during both extinction and retention tests. Importantly, the reduced freezing in the tFUS group was not attributable to non-specific effect such as auditory noise, as both groups demonstrated a similar level of locomotive activity in an open field regardless of the stimulation condition. Finally, we replicated the procedure with a shortened conditioning-to-extinction interval (15 min) to induce immediate extinction deficit. The tFUS group showed a facilitated reduction in freezing during the extinction, which persisted in the subsequent retention session compared to SHAM. In summary, the current findings suggest that tFUS stimulation in the IL facilitates fear extinction, offering a potential therapeutic regimen for fear-related psychiatric disorders.
