Abstract Long-term consumption of tea with high fluoride (F) content has a potential threat to human health. The application of different amounts of biochar to reduce F accumulation in tea leaves has been little studied. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of biochar amounts (0, 0.5%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 8.0%, and 10.0%, w/w) on tea F content during the tea plant growth. Changes in tea quality, soil F fraction, and soil properties caused by biochar and the relationship with tea F accumulation were also considered. The results showed that the application of biochar amendment significantly reduced water-soluble F contents in tea leaves compared to CK (without biochar), especially in the 8.0% treatment (72.55%). Overall, biochar contributed to improving tea polyphenols and caffeine, but had no significant impact on free amino acids and water leachate. Compared with CK, 5.0–10.0% biochar significantly increased soil water-soluble F content due to the substitution of F− with OH− under high pH. Additionally, biochar applied to tea garden soil was effective in decreasing the soil exchangeable aluminum (Ex-Al) content (46.37–91.90%) and increasing the soil exchangeable calcium (Ca2+) content (12.02–129.74%) compared to CK, and correlation analysis showed that this may help reduce F enrichment of tea leaves. In general, the application of 5.0–8.0% biochar can be suggested as an optimal application dose to decrease tea F contents while simultaneously improving tea quality. Graphical Abstract

With the increasing concern about antimony (Sb) pollution and remediation in aquatic ecosystems, more and more feasible technologies have been developed. Adsorption has been extensively studied due to the simplicity of its operation and its minimal environmental effects, but the lack of cheap and stable adsorbents has limited its application in Sb treatment. In this study, pseudo-boehmite (PB) was successfully synthesized via aluminum isopropylate hydrolysis, and its potential for removing Sb(V) from wastewater was explored. The removal efficiency of Sb(V) was 92.50%, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 75.25 mg/g under optimal conditions (pH 5.0, 2 g·L−1 PB, and 10 mg·L−1 Sb(V)). In addition, better performance could be obtained at acidic conditions (pH 3.0–5.0). Surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding were identified as potential major processes for Sb(V) elimination by PB based on experimental and characterization data. This study presents a promising approach for the efficient removal of Sb(V) from wastewater, offering a new insight into the application of aluminum-based materials for heavy metal removal.

Amendments with activators or microorganisms to enhance phytoremediation in toxic-metal-polluted soils have been widely studied. In this research, the production of indoleacetic acid, siderophore, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase by phosphate-solubilizing bacteria was investigated during a pure culture experiment. Pot experiments were performed using Cd-polluted soil with the following treatments: control (CK, only ultrapure water), orange-peel-based activator (OG), and a combination of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (Acinetobacter pitti) and OG (APOG). Ryegrass plant height and fresh weight, Cd content in ryegrass, total and available Cd soil content, soil enzyme activity, and soil bacterial diversity were determined in this work. The findings showed that the height of ryegrass in OG and APOG increased by 14.78% and 21.23%. In the APOG group, a decreased ratio of Cd was 3.37 times that of CK, and the bioconcentration factor was 1.28 times that of CK. The neutral phosphatase activity of APOG was 1.33 times that of CK and catalase activity was 1.95 times that of CK. The activity of urease was increased by 35.48%. APOG increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria and Proteobacteria was the dominant bacterium, accounting for 57.38% in APOG. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that nutrient elements were conducive to the propagation of the dominant bacteria, the secretion of enzymes, and the extraction rate of Cd in the soil. The possible enhancement mechanism of phytoremediation of cadmium by A. pitti combined with OG was that, on the one hand, APOG increased soil nutrient elements and enzyme activities promoted the growth of ryegrass. On the other hand, APOG activated Cd and boosted the movement of Cd from soil to ryegrass. This research offers insight for the combination of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria with an orange-peel-based activator to improve phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils and also provides a new way for the resource utilization of fruit residue.

Straw return is an effective method for disposing agricultural residues. It not only utilizes agricultural waste but also improves soil. In the current review, different crop straw and its characteristics were highlighted, and patterns of straw return were explored (including straw return, straw biochar return, and their combined with fertilizer return), as well as their environmental impacts were outlined. In addition, the effects of straw return and straw biochar amendment on soil properties [e.g., pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), soil nitrogen (N)/phosphorus (P)/potassium (K), soil enzyme activities, and soil microbes] were discussed. Information collected from this review proposed that straw return and straw biochar return or in combination with fertilizer is an applicable way for improving soil fertility and enhancing crop production. Straw return is beneficial to soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial features. The rice straw has positive impacts on crop growth. However, there are different climate types, soil types and crops in China, meaning that the future research need long-term experiment to assess the complex interactions among straw, soil, and plant eco-systems. Accordingly, this review aims to provide available information on the application of straw return in terms of different patterns of its to justify and to expand their effective promotion.

Cadmium (Cd) is a hazardous heavy metal and some of its negative effects include inhibition of rice growth, while also accumulates in the rice grains. Boron (B) has been implicated in mitigating Cd toxicity. Nevertheless, a few studies have been performed up to now to evaluate whether B could encourage Cd tolerance in rice by regulating Cd adsorption on cell walls (CW) in leaves of rice. The current experiment used different concentrations of B (0, 20, and 30 µM) along with 50 µM Cd to rice seedlings. The results indicate that single treatment of Cd significantly inhibited root and shoot growth and caused leaf chlorosis. However, B application at 20, and 30 µM reduced Cd concentrations in the roots by 66% and 77%, and in shoots by 72% and 83%, respectively, and increased plant development. Boron supply at 30 µM increased Cd in leaf CW fraction by 79% and decreased Cd by 64% in the organelle fraction. Moreover, B addition regulated the antioxidant system and decreased malonaldehyde contents (45%) in rice leaves. The present study demonstrates that B reduces Cd translocation and facilitates Cd adsorption on CW and regulates an efficient antioxidant system in rice leaves.

Copper (Cu) pollution is common in the soil. Due to the widespread application of TiO2 NPs, there is a high propensity for the co-occurrence of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and Cu in agricultural soils. It is therefore imperative to evaluate the joint effects of TiO2 NPs and Cu on crops. In this study, the mutual effects of TiO2 NPs and Cu on their toxicity and accumulation in soybean seedlings and on their fates in a hydroponic system were determined. When Cu was at levels of 1 and 2 mg/L, the co-occurring TiO2 NPs at a non-toxic concentration (10 mg/L) significantly enhanced the toxicity and accumulation of Cu and Ti in soybeans, and inhibited the translocation of Cu from soybean roots to shoots. However, when the Cu concentration for co-exposure was ≥ 5 mg/L, such mutual effects disappeared. The amount of Cu ions adsorbed onto TiO2 NPs after 48 h of co-exposure gradually increased from 31 to 118 mg/g when the Cu concentration was increased from 1 to 20 mg/L. The aggregation and sedimentation of TiO2 NPs were significantly increased after 48 h of co-exposure with the Cu at a concentration higher than 5 mg/L, as compared to the single TiO2 NPs exposure. The increasing aggregation and sedimentation might reduce the bioavailability of TiO2 NPs associated with the adsorbed Cu to soybeans, and consequently alleviate or even neutralize the enhanced toxicity and accumulation of Cu in soybeans exerted by the co-existing TiO2 NPs. Our results thus suggest that consideration of the impact of TiO2 NPs on the phytotoxicity of heavy metals, and specifically Cu, needs to be interpreted with care, and highlight the importance of integrating the interaction and fates of TiO2 NPs and metals into their risk assessment.

Iron nanoparticles encapsulated within boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon nanoshell (B/N-C@Fe) were synthesized through a novel and green pyrolysis process using melamine, boric acid, and ferric nitrate as the precursors. The surface morphology, structure, and composition of the B/N-C@Fe materials were thoroughly investigated. The materials were employed as novel catalysts for the activation of potassium monopersulfate triple salt (PMS) for the degradation of levofloxacin (LFX). Linear sweep voltammograms and quenching experiments were used to identify the mechanisms of PMS activation and LFX oxidation by B/N-C@Fe, where SO4− as well as HO were proved to be the main radicals for the reaction processes. This study also discussed how the fluvic acid and inorganic anions in the aqueous solutions affected the degradation of LFX and use this method to simulate the degradation in the real wastewater. The synthesized materials showed a high efficiency (85.5% of LFX was degraded), outstanding stability, and excellent reusability (77.7% of LFX was degraded in the 5th run) in the Fenton-like reaction of LFX. In view of these advantages, B/N-C@Fe have great potentials as novel strategic materials for environmental catalysis. With the continuous increase in the amount of mulch film, “white pollution” caused by plastic fragments (PF) has seriously affected agricultural production progress and poses a great threat to the safety and health of the agricultural environment. In the present study, PFs collected from 20 mulched agricultural farmlands in Sichuan Province were investigated. The PFs were separated and screened following the density flotation method. Optical microscopy was used to assess the fragments’ distribution, abundance, color, size, and morphology, and Raman spectroscopy was used to identify the types. In addition, through the analysis of a questionnaire survey, a random forest (RF) model was conducted to assess the effects of environmental factors on the amount of PF. The results showed that the abundance of PFs was the highest in Lade Town, Zigong City, reaching 1158.33 ± 52.04 particles kg−1. Meanwhile, PFs were less abundant in Foyin Town, Luzhou City, with 50.00 ± 25.00 particles kg−1; the morphology features of PF in the cultivated soil were mainly transparent (60.06%) and flaky-like (83.41%), with sizes < 5 mm (63.61%). In total, 75% of the representative PFs were PE PFs, while PVC PFs were 25%. The RF model indicated that there were significant effects due to the total mulch film amount, annual precipitation, and planting pattern on the number of derived residues (PF). This study provides data indicating the urgent need to prevent and control plastic pollution in mulch farming, specifically in the soils of Sichuan Province.

Chiral pharmaceuticals (CPs), including non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), β-blockers and some herbicide and pesticides, are widely used in aquaculture, clinical treatment and many other fields. However, people are increasingly concerned about such ubiquitous pollutants, which can frequently be detected in contaminated soil and water. In large part, the significant sources of chiral pharmaceuticals stem from industrial processes, such as the direct discharge of untreated or incompletely treated wastewaters containing chiral pharmaceuticals, incorrect storage and use, animal wastes and biosolids. The main ways for human exposure to chiral pharmaceuticals are the disease treatment process and chiral pharmaceuticals contaminants. According to the results of a series of toxic studies, some diseases, even cancers, may be associated with exposure to certain chiral pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the treatment of chiral pharmaceuticals has become an important issue. The current advanced remediation techniques for chiral pharmaceuticals include the conventional method (sorption and sonolysis), biotransformation (an aerobic granular sludge-sequencing batch reactor and constructed wetland system) and advanced oxidation processes (ozonation and photocatalysis). Herein, in this review, we summarize the current status and sources of chiral pharmaceuticals, potential effects on human health, as well as the superiority, disadvantages and prospects of current advanced remediation technologies. Moreover, we also anticipate the prospect of the future research needed for chiral pharmaceuticals pollutant remediation.

Silicon fertilizer and biochar have been widely used to remediate soil contaminated by heavy metals. The effects and mechanism of silicon fertilizer and biochar addition on the heavy metal availability, soil biological properties, and microbial community characteristics need further study in soils contaminated by heavy metals. Therefore, this research determined how silicon fertilizer, biochar, and their combined using affected microbial communities related with nitrogen and phosphorus cycling. The abundance and composition of the microbial community were evaluated by quantitative PCR and phospholipid fatty acid analysis, respectively. Results showed that silicon fertilizer and biochar addition significantly changed soil properties, including pH, total organic carbon, ammonium, nitrate. The Cd and Zn speciation were significantly reduced by silicon fertilizer, biochar, and their integrated application. Microbial community abundance and structure were also significantly changed. Principal component analysis shows that the difference in soil microbial community structure is the most obvious under the combined addition of biochar, silicon fertilizer and biochar. In addition, the results of fluorescence quantitative PCR showed that with biological addition, the number of soil bacteria was significantly reduced. This study reveals the influence of silicon fertilizer and biochar on bacterial and fungal communities in heavy metal soils and the effect of soil heavy metal availability.

Elevated level of arsenic (As) in marine sediment via deposition and accumulation presents long-term ecological risks. This study proposed a sustainable stabilization/solidification (S/S) of As-contaminated sediment via novel valorization of red mud waste, blast furnace slag and calcined clay mineral, which were selected to mitigate the increased leaching of As under alkaline environment of S/S treatment. Quantitative X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses illustrated that stable Ca-As complexes (e.g., Ca5(AsO4)3OH) could be formed at the expense of Ca(OH)2 consumption, which inevitably hindered the hydration process and S/S efficiency. The 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance analysis revealed that incorporation of metakaolin for As immobilization resulted in a low degree of hydration and polymerization, whereas addition of red mud promoted Fe-As complexation and demonstrated excellent compatibility with As. Transmission electron microscopy and elemental mapping further confirmed the precipitation of crystalline Ca-As and amorphous Fe-As compounds. Therefore, red mud-incorporated S/S binder achieved the highest efficiency of As immobilization (99.9%), which proved to be applicable for both in-situ and ex-situ S/S of As-contaminated sediment. These results advance our mechanistic understanding for the design of green and sustainable remediation approach for effective As immobilization. The resource utilization of excess red mud produced from aluminum production is a current research focus. In this study, novel nano-Fe3O4 modified high-iron red mud material (HRM@nFe3O4) was fabricated using the method of co-precipitation to remove Sb(III) from the aqueous phase. The HRM@nFe3O4 at a nFe3O4:HRM mass ratio of 1:1 had optimal adsorbing performance on Sb(III) in water. Compared with others, the synthetic HRM@nFe3O4 sorbent had a superior maximum Sb(III) adsorption capacity of 98.03 mg·g−1, as calculated by the Langmuir model, and a higher specific surface area of 171.63 m2·g−1, measured using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurement. The adsorption process was stable at an ambient pH range, and negligibly limited by temperature the coexisting anions, except for silicate and phosphate, suggesting the high selectivity toward Sb(III). HRM@nFe3O4 retained more than 60% of the initial adsorption efficiency after the fifth adsorption-desorption cycle. The kinetic data fitted by the pseudo-second-order model illustrated the existence of a chemical adsorption process in the adsorption of Sb(III). Further mechanism analysis results indicated that the complexation reaction played a major role in Sb(III) adsorption by HRM@nFe3O4. This HRM@nFe3O4 adsorbent provides an effective method for the removal of Sb(III) in wastewater treatment and is valuable in the reclamation of red mud.

The loss of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers in agricultural runoff is a global environmental problem, attracting worldwide attention. In the last decades, the constructed wetland has been increasingly used for mitigating the loss of nitrogen and phosphate from agricultural runoff, while the substrate, plants, and wetland structure design remain far from clearly understood. In this paper, the optimum substrates and plant species were identified by reviewing their treatment capacity from the related studies. Specifically, the top three suitable substrates are gravel, zeolite, and slag. In terms of the plant species, emergent plants are the most widely used in the constructed wetlands. Eleocharis dulcis, Typha orientalis, and Scirpus validus are the top three optimum emergent plant species. Submerged plants (Hydrilla verticillata, Ceratophyllum demersum, and Vallisneria natans), free-floating plants (Eichhornia crassipes and Lemna minor), and floating-leaved plants (Nymphaea tetragona and Trapa bispinosa) are also promoted. Moreover, the site selection methods for constructed wetland were put forward. Because the existing research results have not reached an agreement on the controversial issue, more studies are still needed to draw a clear conclusion of effective structure design of constructed wetlands. This review has provided some recommendations for substrate, plant species, and site selections for the constructed wetlands to reduce nutrients from agricultural runoff.

As one of China’s emerging urban agglomerations, the Changzhutan urban area is suffering from regional composite air pollution. Previous studies mainly focus on single cities or world-class urban agglomerations, which cannot provide a scientific basis for air pollution in emerging urban agglomerations. This paper proposes the latest high-resolution emission inventory through the emission factor method and compares the results with the rest of the urban agglomeration. The emission inventory shows that the estimates for sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), particulate matter 10 (PM10), particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and ammonia (NH3) emission are 132.5, 148.9, 111.6, 56.5, 119.0, and 72.0 kt, respectively. From the 3 × 3 km emission grid, the spatial difference of air pollutant emissions in the Changzhutan urban agglomeration was more obvious, but the overall trend of monthly pollutant discharge was relatively stable. Depending on the source apportionment, SO42−, OC, and NO3− are the main chemical constituents of PM2.5, accounting for 13.06, 8.24, and 4.84 μg/m3, respectively. Simultaneously, industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and dust are still three main sources that cannot be ignored. With the support of these data, the results of this study may provide a reference for other emerging urban agglomerations in air quality.

The fabrication and evaluation of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with self-doped polyaniline nanofibers (SPAN)/mesoporous carbon nitride (MCN) and bismuth for simultaneous determination of trace Cd2+ and Pb2+ by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) are presented here. The morphology properties of SPAN and MCN were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the electrochemical properties of the fabricated electrode were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Experimental parameters, such as deposition time, pulse potential, step potential, bismuth concentration and NaCl concentration, were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the fabricated electrode exhibited linear calibration curves ranging from 5 to 80 nM for Cd2+ and Pb2+. The limits of detection (LOD) were 0.7 nM for Cd2+ and 0.2 nM for Pb2+ (S/N = 3). Additionally, the repeatability, reproducibility, anti-interference ability and application were also investigated, and the proposed electrode exhibited excellent performance. The proposed method could be extended for other heavy metal determination.

In this study, a novelly synthesized magnetic mesoporous silica composite with high uniformity and polyaniline (PANI) grafted was successfully applied to highly efficient Cr(VI) removal. With the assistance of high adsorption capacity of protonated PANI and the magnetic mesoporous composite at low pH, Cr(VI) was adsorbed and then reduced to less toxic Cr(III) by PANI. The resultant adsorbent was characterized by TEM and FTIR, nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements were carried out, and the zeta potentials of the prepared adsorbent were also measured at different pH. The adsorption and synergistic reduction route was particularly deduced by analyzing the existing forms of PANI and Cr by XPS. Pseudo-second-order model could well fit the data obtained from batch Cr(VI) removal experiments for the kinetic study, and Langmuir model well described the sorption isotherms with the maximum adsorption capacity of 193.85 mg/g. Competition from coexisting ions (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-) was proved to be insignificant. Moreover, the exhausted adsorbent could be well regenerated and kept above 83% removal efficiency in the first three cycles, which demonstrated that it was cost-effective. The results suggested that this novel magnetic adsorbent may offer a simple adsorption and synergistic reduction treatment option to remove Cr(VI) contamination from industrial wastewater and natural water bodies.
