A significant amount of glycyrrhiza wastewater is generated in the cleaning process of glycyrrhiza. The wastewater contains polysaccharide, glycyrrhizic acid, liquiritin, and other polyphenols, which is expensive for cleanup and wastes medical resources. To reduce environmental pollution from glycyrrhiza wastewater and increase the resource usage efficiency of glycyrrhiza components. According to the physicochemical properties of the component in glycyrrhiza wastewater, the ultrasonic assisted membrane separation mode was adopted to regulate the micellar state of glycyrrhizic acid and enhance the differences in membrane separation of polysaccharides, saponins, and flavones, in order to achieve the classification and separation of polysaccharides, saponins, and flavones while removing organic matter in glycyrrhiza wastewater. However, the efficiency, application, and mechanism of ultrasonic-assisted membrane technology for the separation of polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids from glycyrrhiza wastewater remain unclear. This study presents a green and feasible technical strategy for glycyrrhiza wastewater treatment that was developed by adjusting the parameters of ultrasonic assisted membrane separation. In this study, the systematic separation mode of ultrasonic enhanced ultrafiltration combined with nanofiltration is provided. The SCQ-9200E ultrasonic system was provided for the study with adjustable ultrasonic power, and the ultrasonic frequency was 40 kHz. The glycyrrhizic acid micelle was changed using ultrasonic power, pH, and molecular weight cut off (MWCO), and the separation differences among polysaccharide, glycyrrhizic acid, and liquiritin were enhanced. The optimal polysaccharide separation parameters used in the first step: MWCO 30 kDa, ultrasonic power 500 W and pH 5.00, and the rejections of polysaccharide, glycyrrhizic acid, and liquiritin were 87.72 %, 8.01 %, and 6.57 %, respectively. The second step included the following parameters for the separation of liquiritin and glycyrrhizic acid: MWCO 10 kDa, ultrasonic power 100 W and pH 8.00, the rejections of liquiritin and glycyrrhizic acid were 9.22 % and 40.65 %, respectively. The third step is to remove the low molecular sugar in liquiritin by nanofiltration: MWCO 800 Da, pH 8.00, retention solution diluted and separated twice, the rejection of liquiritin and total sugar were 95.72 % and 3.70 %, respectively. Ultrasonic may regulate the microtopography of glycyrrhiza wastewater with the power intensity of 50 W/L, improving the mass transfer efficiency of glycyrrhizic acid and liquiritin in the ultrafiltration separation process. As the separation volume of wastewater increased from 2.00 L to 20.00 L, the concentrations of polysaccharide, glycyrrhizic acid, and liquiritin increased by 2.5–35.4 times, 0.6–15.2 times, and 2.4–32.8 times, respectively, significantly increasing the content of index components in wastewater and solving the problem of recycling and resource utilization in glycyrrhiza wastewater.

Bacteria-infected wounds are enormous clinical obstacles and cause huge burdens to patients and society. Recently, many biomaterials are designed to treat bacterial infected wounds. Among various biomaterials, antibacterial hydrogels are one of the most recommended groups due to their ability to load antibacterial drugs and cover wounds while maintaining a moist environment. In this review, we present the progress in antibacterial hydrogels for bacteria-infected wound treatment. We first summarize the pathophysiology of bacteria-infected wounds, which demonstrates the clinical manifestations and offers clinical therapy projects. Afterwards, we describe the different morphologies of antibacterial hydrogels. Then, we focus on the various practical applications and therapeutic effects of antibacterial hydrogels. At last, the recent problems and outlook of antibacterial hydrogels for bacteria-infected wound healing are summarized. We hope this review can inspire the development of bacteria-infected wound treatment and the related biomedical fields.

Spinal cord injury (SCI), which causes irreversible damage in both sensory and motor function, is considered an insurmountable challenge in the field of medicine. The previous researchers have developed many kinds of biomaterials for SCI, and spinal cord conduits (SCCs) are an important classification for bridging spinal cord tissues while performing their corresponding functions. In this review, we first describe the original sources of the different polymers that determine the properties of the different SCCs. Afterwards, we focus on the different types of crosslinking methods used for preparing SCCs. Then, various practical applications and therapeutic effects of SCCs are summarized and discussed. Finally, we conclude the existing limitations of current SCCs. We hope that this paper will serve as a further inspiration for the development of SCCs in future.

ABSTRACT Differences in tissue microbiota-host interaction between lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) about recurrence and metastasis have not been well studied. In this study, we performed bioinformatics analyses to identify the genes and tissue microbes significantly associated with recurrence or metastasis. All lung cancer patients were divided into the recurrence or metastasis (RM) group and the nonrecurrence and nonmetastasis (non-RM) group according to whether or not they had recurred or metastasized within 3 years after the initial surgery. Results showed that there were significant differences between LUAD and LUSC in gene expression and microbial abundance associated with recurrence and metastasis. Compared with non-RM, the bacterial community of RM had a lower richness in LUSC. In LUSC, host genes significantly correlated with tissue microbe, whereas host-tissue microbe interaction in LUAD was rare. Then, we established a novel multimodal machine learning model based on genes and microbes to predict the recurrence and metastasis risk of a LUSC patient, which achieves an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.81. In addition, the predicted risk score was significantly associated with the patient’s survival. IMPORTANCE Our study elucidates significant differences in RM-associated host-microbe interactions between LUAD and LUSC. Besides, the microbes in tumor tissue could be used to predict the RM risk of LUSC, and the predicted risk score is associated with patients’ survival.

Abstract Background There was a paucity of valid information on how to rectify the convex coronal imbalance effectively in dystrophic scoliosis secondary to Type I neurofibromatosis (DS-NF1), while postoperative inadvertent aggravation of CCI occurred regularly resulting in poor patient satisfaction. We aimed to identify the risk factors for persistent postoperative CCI in DS-NF1, and to optimize the coronal rebalancing strategies based on the lessons learned from this rare case series. Methods NF1-related scoliosis database was reviewed and those with significant CCI (> 3 cm) were identified, sorted and the outcomes of surgical coronal rebalance were analyzed to identify the factors being responsible for failure of CCI correction. Results CCI with dystrophic thoracolumbar/lumbar apex was prone to remain uncorrected (7 failure cases in 11) when compared to those with thoracic apex (0 failure cases in 4) (63.6% vs. 0.0%, p = 0.077). Further comparison between those with and without post-op CCI showed a higher correction of main curve Cobb angle (65.9 ± 9.1% vs. 51.5 ± 37.3%, p = 0.040), more tilted instrumentation (10.3 ± 3.6° vs. 3.2 ± 3.1°, p = 0.001) and reverse tilt and translation of upper instrumented vertebra (UIV) to convex side (8.0 ± 2.3° vs. -3.4 ± 5.9°, p

Abstract Background Rib head dislocation (RHD) in dystrophic scoliosis of type 1 neurofibromatosis (DS-NF1) is a unique disorder caused by skeletal dystrophy and scoliotic instability. No particular surgical manipulation is mentioned in the literature to instruct the spine surgeons to effectively obtain more migration of the dislocated rib head without resection. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of screw/hook insertion at vertebrae with RHDs on the retraction of penetrated rib head from spinal canal. Methods 37 neurologically intact patients with DS-NF1 and concomitant 53 RHDs undergoing scoliosis surgery without rib head excision were retrospectively reviewed. We used pre and postoperative whole-spine radiographs to determine the Cobb angle and the vertebral translation (VT), and the CT scans to evaluate the intraspinal rib length (IRL) and rib-vertebral angle (RVA). The dislocated ribs were assigned into two groups according to the presence of screw/hook insertion at vertebrae with RHD: screw/hook group and non-screw/hook group. Results 37 dislocated ribs with screws/hooks insertion at corresponding vertebrae were assigned into the screw/hook group and the remaining 16 dislocated ribs consisted of the non-screw/hook group. In the screw/hook group, the correction rates of Cobb angle and VT were significantly higher than the non-screw/hook group after surgery (58.7 ± 16.0% vs. 30.9 ± 12.4%, p = 0.003; 61.8 ± 18.8% vs. 35.1 ± 16.6%, p = 0.001; respectively). Similarly, more correction rates of IRL and RVA were found in the screw/hook group than the non-screw/hook group (63.1 ± 31.3% vs. 30.1 ± 20.7%, p = 0.008; 17.6 ± 9.7% vs. 7.2 ± 3.6%, p = 0.006; respectively). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the correction rates of Cobb angle, VT and RVA contributed significantly to correction of IRL (β = 0.389, 0.939 and 1.869, respectively; p = 0.019, 0.001 and 0.002, respectively). Conclusion Screw/hook insertion at dystrophic vertebrae with RHDs contributed significantly to the degree of retraction of penetrated rib head from spinal canal. This effectiveness is mediated by more corrections of VT and RVA.

The citrate industry has a wide range of applications in food, pharmaceutical, and other fields. As a common class of food additives and functional supplements with tremendous development potential and strong core competitiveness, particles with good powder characteristics and functionalization are becoming one of the primary directions in the evolution of citrate into the high-end market. This article reviews the primary citrate crystallization techniques and examines the fundamental citrate crystallization mechanisms by describing citrate nucleation and growth during the industrial crystallization process. A variety of citrate hydrates are also summarized. The primary control conditions of the three essential product indices of purity, particle size, and grain shape are established. The need to take into account the density, fluidity, caking resistance, dissolution rate, suspension, bioavailability, and other indices of products is highlighted, along with applications for products that meet the purity and particle size requirements. While summarizing industrial citrate crystallization equipment, this paper also discusses the beneficial effect of continuous crystallization in achieving industrialization. Finally, the future development of citrate crystals is anticipated, and it is suggested that the combination of basic research and application research should be strengthened to explore the new application field of citrate crystals, and the automation and intelligence of the crystal preparation process should be realized as far as possible.

Heavy metal pollution at tourist attractions centers has caused widespread concern. In this study, the concentration of seven heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, Ni, As, and Mn) in the surface soil of the Lushan scenic area was measured, and their pollution characteristics were assessed using the Nemerow comprehensive pollution index and geo-accumulation index; further, the human non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were evaluated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency health risk assessment model. Correlation analysis, cluster analysis, and a positive matrix factorisation model were used to analyse the heavy metal sources. The results indicated that the heavy metal concentrations did not exceed the pollution threshold levels. The hazard quotients for the six heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, Ni, and As) are below the threshold for non-carcinogenic health risk, whereas the carcinogenic health risk in the region is at an “acceptable” level; however, because of the high contribution of As, the carcinogenic health risks to residents of this area require continuous monitoring. Analysis revealed six sources of the pollutants: soil parent material, altitude, surface accumulation of organic matter, industrial dustfall, local human activities (life and agriculture), and tourism. These findings provide a scientific basis for developing appropriate strategies for a sustainable development of the scenic area.

Large amounts of organic carbon (OC) and inorganic carbon (IC) are stored in coastal sediments. These carbon compounds play an important role in coping with global climate change. In this study, the surface sediments of four tidal flat sections in northern Jiangsu were analysed for their OC and IC contents, as well as changes in the physical and chemical properties of the sediments (particle size, pH, salinity (SAL), and N, P, and S contents). A partial least squares regression (PLSR) was conducted to explore the factors affecting OC and IC variations. According to the results, the OC and IC contents exhibited increasing trends when moving from the seaward to landward parts of the sections. The OC variations were large and IC variations were small in all four sections and the vegetation coverage contributes to the carbon content of tidal flat sediments. The PLSR analysis indicates that the main factors influencing OC and IC contents in the tidal flat system were particle size (sand, silt, and clay) and N content, while SAL had the least influence on OC and IC contents. The IC and OC contents are positively coupled, which may indicate that the nearshore vegetation has a greater contribution to OC, affects the coastal hydrodynamic conditions, and enhances the retention of IC. Additionally, the transformation of OC to IC also positively contributed to the coupling of their contents.

Autotoxic ginsenosides have been implicated as one of the major causes for replant failure of Sanqi ginseng (Panax notoginseng), however, the impact of autotoxic ginsenosides on the fungal microbiome, especially on soil-borne fungal pathogens, remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the influence of ginsenoside monomers Rg1, Rb1, Rh1, and their mixture (Mix) on the composition and diversity of the soil fungal community as well as the abundance and growth of soil-borne pathogen Fusarium oxysporum in pure culture. The addition of autotoxic ginsenosides altered the composition of the total fungal microbiome as well as the taxa within the shared and unique treatment-based components, but not a-diversity. In particular, autotoxic ginsenosides enriched potentially pathogenic taxa, such as Alternaria, Cylindrocarpon, Gibberella, Phoma, and Fusarium, and decreased the abundances of beneficial taxa such as Acremonium, Mucor, and Ochroconis. Relative abundances of pathogenic taxa were significantly and negatively correlated with that of beneficial taxa. Among the pathogenic fungi, the Fusarium genus was most responsive to ginsenoside addition with the abundance of F. oxysporum consistently enhanced in the ginsenoside-treated soils. Validation tests confirmed that autotoxic ginsenosides promoted mycelial growth and conidial germination of the root-rot pathogen F. oxysporum. In addition, the autotoxic ginsenoside mixture exhibited synergistic effects on pathogen proliferation. Collectively, these results highlight that autotoxic ginsenosides are capable of disrupting the equilibrium of fungal microbiomes through the stimulation of potential soil-borne pathogens which presents a significant hurdle in remediating replant failure of Sanqi ginseng.
