Education plays a crucial role in promoting green development by shaping environmentally friendly production behaviors and fostering low-carbon lifestyles. This research examines the impact of China’s free compulsory education (FCE) policy on agricultural green total factor productivity (AGTFP) using provincial panel data from 2002 to 2015. Additionally, it explores the impact mechanisms and regional heterogeneity. The results indicate that first, the FCE policy has a significantly positive effect on AGTFP, as confirmed through a series of robustness tests. Second, the FCE policy primarily influences AGTFP by increasing farmers’ awareness of green production and promoting the development of green technologies in agriculture. Third, the impact of the FCE policy varies across regions. It promotes green technologies in agriculture in developed provinces and fosters ecological awareness among farmers in less developed provinces. These findings offer valuable empirical evidence and policy implications for implementing education popularization projects and reducing agricultural carbon emissions in developing countries.

Abstract Background Lotus (Nelumbo Adans.) is used as an herbal medicine and the flowers are a source of natural flavonoids. ‘Da Sajin’, which was firstly found in the plateau area, is a natural mutant in flower color with red streamers dyeing around white petals. Results The LC–MS-MS results showed that eight anthocyanin compounds, including cyanidin 3-O-glucoside, cyanidin 3-O-galactoside, malvidin 3-O-galactoside, and malvidin 3-O-glucoside, were differentially enriched in red-pigmented tissues of the petals, whereas most of these metabolites were undetected in white tissues of the petals. Transcriptome profiling indicated that the relative high expression levels of structural genes, such as NnPAL, NnF3H, and NnANS, was inconsistent with the low anthocyanin concentration in white tissues. Members of the NnMYB and NnbHLH transcription factor families were presumed to play a role in the metabolic flux in the anthocyanin and proanthocyanidin biosynthetic pathway. The expression model of translational initiation factor, ribosomal proteins and SKP1–CUL1–F-box protein complex related genes suggested an important role for translational and post-translational network in anthocyanin biosynthesis. In addition, pathway analysis indicated that light reaction or photo destruction might be an important external cause for floral color determination in lotus. Conclusions In this study, it is supposed that the natural lotus mutant ‘Da Sajin’ may have originated from a red-flowered ancestor. Partial loss of anthocyanin pigments in petals may result from metabolic disorder caused by light destruction. This disorder is mainly regulated at post translation and translation level, resulting in a non-inherited phenotype. These results contribute to an improved understanding of anthocyanin metabolism in lotus, and indicate that the translational and post-translational regulatory network determines the metabolic flux of anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins under specific environmental conditions.

BackgroundChina has been increasing the investment in Primary Health Care Institutions (PHCIs) since the launch of the New Health Care System Reform in 2009. It is a crucial concern whether the PHCIs can meet residents' need both in urban and rural with the limited government finance, especially encountering the challenge of the COVID-19. This study aimed to reveal the trend of the primary health service efficiency in the past decade, compare the urban-rural differences, and explore relevant factors.MethodsDEA and Malmquist models were applied to calculate the health service efficiency of PHCIs among 28 provinces in China, with the input variables including the number of institutions, number of beds, number of health technicians, and the outputs variables including the number of outpatients and emergency visits, number of discharged patients. And the Tobit model was used to analyze the factors on the efficiency in urban and rural. A sensitivity analysis for model validations was also carried out.ResultsThe average technical efficiency (TE) of urban PHCIs fluctuated from 63.3% to 67.1%, which was lower than that in rural (75.8–82.2%) from 2009 to 2019. In terms of dynamic efficiency, the urban PHCIs performed better than the rural, and the trends in the total factor productivity change were associated with favorable technology advancement. The population density and dependency ratio were the key factors on TE in both of the urban and rural PHCIs, and these two factors were positively correlated to TE. In terms of TE, it was negatively correlated with the proportion of total health expenditure as a percentage of GDP in urban PHCIs, while in rural it was positively correlated with the urbanization rate and negatively correlated with GDP per capita. Besides, the tests of Mann–Whitney U, and Kruskal–Wallis H indicated the internal validity and robustness of the chosen DEA and Malmquist models.ConclusionsIt needs to reduce the health resource wastes and increase service provision in urban PHCIs. Meanwhile, it is necessary to strengthen medical technology and gaining greater efficiency in rural PHCIs by technology renovation.

Insect brains play important roles in the regulation of sex-biased behaviors such as mating and oviposition. The neural structure and function of brain differences between males and females have been identified, in which the antenna lobes (AL) showed the most discrepancy, however, the whole repertoire of the genes expressed in the brains and the molecular mechanism of neural signaling and structural development are still unclear. In this study, high-throughput transcriptome analysis of male and female brains was carried on in the Asia corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, and a total of 39.23 Gb data and 34,092 unigenes were obtained. Among them, 276 genes displayed sex-biased expression by DEG analysis, of which 125 genes were highly expressed in the males and 151 genes were highly expressed in the females. Besides, by homology analysis against genes that have been confirmed to be related to brain neurodevelopment, a total of 24 candidate genes were identified in O. furnacalis. In addition, to further screen the core genes that may be important for sex-biased nerve signaling and neurodevelopment, protein-protein interaction networks were constructed for the sex-biased genes and neurodevelopment genes. We identified 10 (Mhc, Mlc1, Mlc2, Prm, Mf, wupA, TpnC25D, fln, l(2)efl, and Act5C), 11 (PPO2, GNBP3, Spn77Ba, Ppn, yellow-d2, PGRP-LB, PGRP-SD, PGRP-SC2, Hml, Cg25C, and vkg) and 8 (dac, wg, hh, ci, run, Lim1, Rbp9, and Bx) core hub genes that may be related to brain neural development from male-biased, female-biased, and neurodevelopment gene groups. Our results provide a reference for further analysis of the dimorphism of male and female brain structures in agricultural pests.

Water lilies (Nymphaea L.) are ancient angiosperms that can be cultivated in both fresh and brackish water. Water lily plants have adapted morphologically and physiologically to the aqueous environment. Nonetheless, little is known about the regulatory mechanisms that enable water lily to acclimate to saline conditions, restricting its production and distribution. To illustrate the role of roots in water lily salinity tolerance, we investigated the adaptive regulation of the water lily root system under high salinity. Aspects of its root architecture, including root length, surface area, volume, and tip number, were significantly reduced by salt stress. Transcriptome sequencing showed that 120 genes were upregulated and 1214 genes were downregulated under salt stress. The differentially expressed genes were mainly enriched in oxidoreductase activity, structural molecule activity, and transmembrane transporter activity. Most ion transporter genes were downregulated, suggesting that water lily may partially close ion channels and/or transporters to avoid excessive ion accumulation or ion imbalance under long-term salt stress. Genes related to NO3− transport were both up- and downregulated, whereas genes related to ammonium transport were uniformly downregulated, suggesting that transcriptional changes may play a role in balancing nitrogen metabolism under long-term saline conditions. The roots showed relatively high concentrations of Na+ and had the ability to hyper-accumulate Na+ under salt stress. These findings provide insight into the regulatory mechanisms that enable water lily roots to tolerate salinity and lay a foundation for the breeding of salt-tolerant cultivars.

Plant selection plays a critical role in phytoremediation. However, previous research has focused on comparing different plant species but has ignored different cultivars. Here, a laboratory experiment was performed to analyze the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal performance of different cultivars of Oenanthe javanica, which are widely employed for phytoremediation in China. Seven cultivars were planted on simulated livestock wastewater with high N and P content prepared with compounds for 22 days in two artificial climate chambers with different temperatures. N and P contents were monitored to estimate the nutrient removal performance of the cultivars. ‘Suzhou Yuanye’ had the highest N removal ability at room temperature (45.33 ± 1.92%) and under cold stress (39.63 ± 2.15%) in 22 days, and it could also remove P effectively (99.32 ± 0.33% at room temperature and 77.50 ± 0.08% under cold stress). ‘Yixing Yuanye’ performed the best in P removal (97.90 ± 2.89% at room temperature and 99.57 ± 0.61% under cold stress). ‘Liyang Baiqin’ performed well in N removal only at room temperature (44.30 ± 1.03%). ‘Suqian Jianye’ had low removal efficiencies for both N and P. From the biomass and N content, we could conclude that the high N removal efficiency of ‘Suzhou Yuanye’ is due to high N assimilation of the plant. However, ‘Yixing Yuanye’ did not show higher P assimilation ability than other cultivars. Taken together, the selection of cultivars is important for phytoremediation projects using O. javanica, and ‘Suzhou Yuanye’ is much more suitable for phytoremediation than other cultivars.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an important migratory pest, causing great losses to agricultural production. Light trapping is a pesticide-free method for pest control and is influenced by many factors, especially wavelength and light intensity. In this study, a series of phototactic behavioral assays were carried out and the physical parameters were included to identify phototactic responses of S. frugiperda, with Helicoverpa armigera as control. It was found that S. frugiperda showed the highest average phototactic rate to blue light among five different LED lights. The phototactic rates of the two moths increased gradually with light intensity and were not obviously influenced by sex. In addition, the phototactic rate of S. frugiperda was significantly lower under a low light intensity of UV light than that of H. armigera, further confirmed by the indoor simulation experiment and EC50. According to the obtained parameters, the trapping distance of S. frugiperda to blue light was smaller than that of H. armigera to UV light. Therefore, we summarized a proposal of using blue light for light traps to control S. frugiperda, with a maximum distance of no more than 108 m. These results provide an experimental and theoretical basis for improving light-trapping techniques for managing S. frugiperda.

Swine wastewater (SW) treatment by Myriophyllum aquaticum is an important biotechnology for its resource utilization. However, some knowledge gaps remain in compound-pollutant removal in SW, especially in practical applications. To clarify the responses of M. aquaticum to the compound pollutants as well as the related operational parameters in SW treatment, three initial doses (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 kg per pond in 150 L simulated SW) of M. aquaticum and a control (no plant; CK) were allocated to 12 ponds under a plastic roof in Nanjing city of Eastern China during 75 days in the summer of 2019. Results showed that M. aquaticum could be used as a pioneer plant to efficiently remove compounded pollutants of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and especially for heavy metals in simulated SW. Compared with CK, M. aquaticum assisted in improving the total N, NH4+–N, NO3-–N, NO2-–N, and dissolved organic N by 30.1%, 100%, 100%, 97.6%, 20.2%, 39.8% whereas Cu, Zn, and Cd by 50.4%, 36.4% and 47.9% on average during the 75-day experiment in summer, respectively. Moreover, concentrations of Cu and Cd at day 75 were in the ranges of 1.92–2.82 and 0.64–1.47 g kg−1 DW, respectively, exceeding the corresponding limits of the heavy-metal hyperaccumulator. For the operational parameters, the optimized initial dose was 1.0 kg per pond with M. aquaticum harvested after 45 summer days, respectively. Given that M. aquaticum has been widely used as animal feed in recent years and limit values for Cu and Zn in animal feed are not set in China, the toxicities of Cu and Zn should be assessed and the guideline of their limit values needs to be established for safe feed production. Interestingly, NH4+–N could dominate the removal of heavy metals especially Cd in the simulated SW, however, related mechanisms are needed for further study.

Sapium sebiferum (L.) Roxb. is an economically important tree in eastern Asia, and it exhibits many traits associated with good forestation species in coastal land. However, scarce research has been conducted to elucidate the effects of rhizosphere bacterial diversity on the adaptability and viability of S. sebiferum trees grown in the coastal environment. Field trials were conducted, and rhizosphere soil samples were collected from typical coastal and forestry nursery environments. Rhizosphere bacterial communities were evaluated using 16S rRNA pyrosequencing. A total of 43 bacterial phyla were detected in all the coastal and nursery rhizospheric soil samples. Relatively higher rhizosphere community diversity was found in coastal field-grown trees. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteriota, Bacteroidota, Chloroflex, and Gemmatimonadota were dominant bacterial phyla in rhizosphere communities of tallow trees. However, the rare groups in the coastal rhizosphere soils, with a relative abundance lower than 1%, including Latescibacterota, Methylomirabilota, NB1-j, and Nitrospirota, were largely absent in the nursery field-grown tree’s rhizosphere soils. LEfSe analysis identified a total of 43 bacterial groups that were more significantly abundant in the coastal rhizosphere environment than in that of forestry nursery grown trees. Further, our cladogram analysis identified Nitrospirota, Methylomirabilota, NB1-j, and Latescibacterota as biomarkers for the coastal environment at the phylum taxonomic level. These results suggested that the adaptability of S. sebiferum trees in coastal environment might be promoted by rhizosphere microbial interactions. Complex tree–microbe interactions might enhance the resistance of the trees to coastal environment, partially by recruiting certain bacterial microbiome species, which is of high saline-alkali resistance.

Research is lacking on the health risks of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in water dropwort grown in livestock wastewater. Our results showed that antibiotics from livestock wastewater were absorbed and bioaccumulated by water dropwort. The concentration of antibiotics was higher in the roots than in the stems and leaves. The health-risk coefficients of antibiotics in water dropwort were below the threshold (6 to 7.75 × 1012 copies g−1, suggesting the potential risk of intaking ARGs in water dropwort cannot be ignored. Although the safety of consuming water dropwort used to purify livestock wastewater, considering accumulated antibiotics and ARGs, was assessed in this study, more studies should be conducted to ensure we fully understand the health risks.

Attractants and repellents are considered to be an environment-friendly approach for pest management. Odorant receptors (ORs), which are located on the dendritic membranes of olfactory sensory neurons in insects, are essential genes for recognizing attractants and repellents. In the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, ORs that respond to sex pheromones have been characterized, but general ORs for plant odorants, especially for repellents, have not been identified. Nonanal is a plant volatile of maize that could result in avoidance of the oviposition process for female adults in O. furnacalis. In this study, we identified a female-biased OR that responds to nonanal using a Xenopus oocyte expression system. In addition, we found that OfurOR27 was also sensitive to two other compounds, octanal and 1-octanol. Behavioral analysis showed that octanal and 1-octanol also caused female avoidance of oviposition. Our results indicated that OfurOR27 is an OR that is sensitive to repellents. Moreover, the two newly identified repellents may help to develop a chemical ecology approach for pest control in O. furnacalis.

The utilization of livestock waste has attracted increasing attention in recent years. The presence of high levels of heavy metals is a major obstacle to the utilization of biogas as a fertilizer resource. In this study, the heavy metal contents in biogas residue, slurry, and discharged sewage from three representative farms of gooseries, henneries, and dairy farms in the Yangtze River Basin were investigated and assessed. The results demonstrated that heavy metals, including Cd, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, etc., could be detected in all biogas residues, with significantly different contents between farm types (p < 0.005). Specifically, biogas residues from the goosery and the dairy farms met “China’s Organic Fertilizer Standards” (COF Standards); however, Cd concentrations in biogas residues from hennery farms exceeded the limits by five times. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in biogas slurries from all of the farms exceeded the limits of the “China Farmland Irrigation Water Quality Standard” (CFIWQ Standard). In particular, the Pb concentrations in biogas slurry from the dairy farms exceeded the limits by 29 times, and the discharged sewage from all three farm types complied with the comprehensive sewage discharge standards in China; however, only that from the goosery farms was suitable for irrigation. Thus, it is recommended to increase the feed selection, biogas engineering, and biological-purification-supporting technology, and to carry out regular sampling inspections of the biogas residue, slurry, and discharged sewage for heavy metals, so that environmental and crop pollution risks can be reduced when they are used as sources of nutrients for eco-friendly agriculture.

In recent years, with the frequent global occurrence of harmful algal blooms, the use of plant allelopathy to control algal blooms has attracted special and wide attention. This study validates the possibility of turning water dropwort into a biological resource to inhibit the growth of harmful Microcystis aeruginosa blooms via allelopathy. The results revealed that there were 33 types of allelopathic compounds in the water dropwort culture water, of which 15 were phenolic acids. Regarding water dropwort itself, 18 phenolic acids were discovered in all the organs of water dropwort via a targeted metabolomics analysis; they were found to be mainly synthesized in the leaves and then transported to the roots and then ultimately released into culture water where they inhibited M. aeruginosa growth. Next, three types of phenolic acids synthesized in water dropwort, i.e., benzoic, salicylic, and ferulic acids, were selected to clarify their inhibitory effects on the growth of M. aeruginosa and their mechanism(s) of action. It was found that the inhibitory effect of phenolic acids on the growth of M. aeruginosa increased with the increase of the exposure concentration, although the algae cells were more sensitive to benzoic acid than to salicylic and ferulic acids. Further study indicated that the inhibitory effects of the three phenolic acids on the growth of M. aeruginosa were largely due to the simultaneous action of reducing the number of cells, damaging the integrity of the cell membrane, inhibiting chlorophyll a (Chl-a) synthesis, decreasing the values of F0 and Fv/Fm, and increasing the activity of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, and CAT) of M. aeruginosa. Thus, the results of this study indicate that both culture water including the rich allelochemicals in water dropwort and biological algae inhibitors made from water dropwort could be used to control the growth of noxious algae in the future.

This study aimed to use organic fertilizers, e.g., compost and manures, and a halophytic plant [wavy-leaved saltbush (Atriplex undulata)] to remediate an agricultural soil polluted with toxic elements. Compost or manure (1% w/w) was added to a polluted soil in a pot trial. The application of the organic fertilizer, whether compost or manure, led to a significant improvement in the growth of the tested plant. From the physiological point of view, the application of organic fertilizers to polluted soil significantly increased the content of chlorophyll, carotenoid, and proline and, furthermore, led to a clear decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) in the plant leaves. The highest significant values of organic carbon in the polluted soil (SOC) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were found for the soil amended by compost and planted with wavy-leaved saltbush. Manure significantly reduced the soil pH to 7.52. Compost significantly decreased Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb availability by 19, 8, 12, and 13%, respectively, compared to the control. On the other hand, manure increased Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb availability by 8, 15, 18, and 14%, respectively. Compost and manure reduced the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) of Cd and Pb. Compost was more effective in increasing the phytostabilization of toxic metals by wavy-leaved saltbush plants compared to manure. The results of the current study confirm that the application of non-decomposed organic fertilizers to polluted soils increases the risk of pollution of the ecosystem with toxic elements. The cultivation of contaminated soils with halophytic plants with the addition of aged organic materials, e. g., compost, is an effective strategy to reduce the spreading of toxic metals in the ecosystem, thus mitigating their introduction into the food chain.

With the rapid development of urbanization in China, the eutrophication or black stink of urban rivers has become a critical environmental problem. As a research hotspot in wastewater purification, biofilm technology has shortcomings, such as insufficient carbon sources for denitrification. This study used a Biofilm Denitrification Batch Reactor (BDBR) system constructed using reed biochar as the carbon source required in denitrification, significantly accelerating the biofilm formation. To determine the suitable amount of biochar for water purification from the urban eutrophic rivers by the BDBR system, 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% reed biochar was added to the viscose fiber combined packing. The combined packing reactor involved in this study had a high removal efficiency of the eutrophication channel COD throughout the experiment. However, adding 5% and 10% biochar in the combined filler effectively increased the number of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria on the biofilm, improved the dominant bacteria diversity and microbial activity, and enhanced denitrification efficiency in the BDBR system. It provides new ideas and methods for developing and applying in situ denitrification technology for urban polluted rivers.

Elucidating the stoichiometry and resorption patterns of multiple nutrients is of essential importance to holistically understanding plant nutrition and biogeochemical cycling. Although many studies on ecological stoichiometry have been carried out, surprisingly few of them were simultaneously done on the investigation of both nutrient resorption efficiency and stoichiometry for different-aged plantations of a perennial tree. Here, both green and senesced leaf samples were collected from four Larix kaempfer plantations aged of 8, 15, 22, and 32 years in the Qinling Mountains to examine nutrients resorption efficiency and stoichiometry characteristics. The results suggested that the nutrient concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, and Fe in both green and senesced leaves of L. kaempferi (a deciduous conifer tree) did not show a regular change trends along the plantation ages in the Qinling Mountains. The concentrations of the most nutrients examined, except for Fe, in the green leaves were relatively lower than or close to the required physiological concentrations, suggesting a relative limitation of multiple nutrients exists in L. kaempferi for its above-ground biomass growth. The rank order of resorption efficiencies of four key nutrients (N, P, K, and Mg) was K (80.89%) > N (67.42%) > P (65.34%) > Mg (41.16%), whereas the nutrient Ca and Fe tended to accumulate in senesced leaves. Overall, the nutrient resorption efficiency of all examined elements did not exhibit a regular trend corresponding to the change of the plantation ages in L. kaempferi, but it was positively related to the nutrient concentrations in green leaves. Lotus (Nelumbo Adans) is an aquatic perennial plant that flourished during the middle Albian stage. In this study, we characterized the digital gene expression signatures for China Antique lotus under conditions of heat shock stress. Using RNA-seq technology, we sequenced four libraries, specifically, two biological replicates for control plant samples and two for heat stress samples. As a result, 6,528,866 to 8,771,183 clean reads were mapped to the reference genome, accounting for 92-96% total clean reads. A total of 396 significantly altered genes were detected across the genome, among which 315 were upregulated and 81 were downregulated by heat shock stress. Gene ontology (GO) enrichment of differentially expressed genes revealed protein folding, cell morphogenesis and cellular component morphogenesis as the top three functional terms under heat shock stress. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis led to the identification of protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum, plant-pathogen interactions, spliceosome, endocytosis, and protein export as significantly enriched pathways. Among the upregulated genes, small heat shock proteins (sHsps) and genes related to cell morphogenesis were particularly abundant under heat stress. Data from the current study provide valuable clues that may help elucidate the molecular events underlying heat stress response in China Antique lotus.

Rural domestic sewage has become very serious, while only 17.4% of it is treated centrally or partially, which results in environmental pollution and waste of water resources. To solve this problem, a wastewater treatment system by modular coupling is proposed, and the processing module includes two or three of multi-stage ecological pond, multi-stage drop aeration ecological ditch and multi-stage drop dam. The analysis of three examples shows that the system has a good treatment effect on chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +-N) and total phosphorus (TP), and the removal ratios are 90.22%, 82.07%, 91.60%, 81.48%, respectively, when the flow rate is 3 m3/h. After 28 days of continuous operation, the treatment capacity decreases by about 10%, indicating that the system has good long-term treatment performance. The removal ratio decreases slightly under different flow rates, which shows its great adaptability in different hydraulic conditions. In practical application, the system can select different coupling systems according to rural terrain and wastewater quality, and it is suitable for the treatment of rural domestic sewage and agricultural non-point source sewage and the repairment of urban sewage and lake eutrophic water body. An RND (resistance-nodulation-division)-type transporter having the capacity to export free fatty acids (FFAs) was identified in the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus strain PCC 7942 during characterization of a mutant strain engineered to produce FFAs. The basic strategy for construction of the FFA-producing mutant was a commonly used one, involving inactivation of the endogenous acyl-acyl carrier protein synthetase gene (aas) and introduction of a foreign thioesterase gene ('tesA), but a nitrate transport mutant NA3 was used as the parental strain to achieve slow, nitrate- limited growth in batch cultures. Also, a nitrogen-regulated promoter PnirA was used to drive 'tesA to maximize thioesterase expression during the nitrate-limited growth. The resulting mutant (dAS2T) was, however, incapable of growth under the conditions of nitrate limitation, presumably due to toxicity associated with FFA overproduction. Incubation of the mutant culture under the non-permissive conditions allowed for isolation of a pseudorevertant (dAS2T-pr1) capable of growth on nitrate. Genome sequence and gene expression analyses of this strain suggested that expression of an RND-type efflux system had rescued growth on nitrate. Targeted inactivation of the RND-type transporter genes in the wild-type strain resulted in loss of tolerance to exogenously added FFAs including capric, lauric, myristic, oleic and linolenic acids. Construction and demolition waste (CDW) has begun to take its toll on the environment. One option to mitigate the negative influence is to utilize CDW as recycled aggregate (RA) in concrete production. Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) mixtures prepared by replacing natural aggregate (NA) with RA, with expansive agent (EXP) and polypropylene fiber (PPF) as additives, have been cast to study their mechanical properties and environmental impact. The results of compressive strength testing reveal that both additives, EXP and PPF, have positive effects on the mechanical properties. The microscopic analysis shows that the hydration reaction of EXP generates ettringite crystals which fill the internal pores of the concrete and increase the compactness of the concrete. Fiber can significantly improve the bonding between cement paste and aggregates, thus enhancing the deformation resistance of concrete. Environmental analysis shows that the leaching amount of heavy metals is very limited which is within 11.67% of the required value in China standard, and carbon emission of concrete with RA as aggregates and fly ash as low-carbon binder is lower than that of concrete without RA.
