Estimations of the patterns and controls of soil organic carbon (SOC) could provide instructive insights into the potential impact of future global change on soil carbon (C). In this work, we combined GeoDetector and random forest (RF) to estimate SOC stocks in Chinese grassland ecosystems with uncertainty assessments, and identified a network of cross-correlated environmental covariates for determining SOC based on a dataset collected from 813 sampling sites (0–20 cm) collected from 2000 to 2014. We predicted that 17.50 Pg C was stored in Chinese grasslands to a depth of 20 cm and that the average SOC density was 4.69 kg C/m−2(−|−). The effectiveness of using RF to predict SOC was demonstrated by an accuracy assessment based on 10-fold cross-validation, with a ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) of 2.89. The SOC stocks in southern China were lower than those in northern China. A high SOC density was found in northeastern China and on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Soil properties had the strongest direct effect on SOC. Climate was significantly negatively associated with SOC and indirectly affected SOC via its effect on soil properties. Topography had a significant direct impact on vegetation, but its direct effect on SOC was relatively weak. This study emphasizes the patterns and heterogeneity of SOC stocks as well as the relative significance of climate, vegetation, soil characteristics, topography, and their complex interrelationships in controlling SOC. These results may provide a theoretical foundation for developing sustainable management systems and calibrating C process models.

Abstract BRISC (BRCC3 isopeptidase complex) is a deubiquitinating enzyme that has been linked with inflammatory processes, but its role in liver diseases and the underlying mechanism are unknown. Here, we investigated the pathophysiological role of BRISC in acute liver failure using a mice model induced by D-galactosamine (D-GalN) plus lipopolysaccharide (LPS). We found that the expression of BRISC components was dramatically increased in kupffer cells (KCs) upon LPS treatment in vitro or by the injection of LPS in D-GalN-sensitized mice. D-GalN plus LPS-induced liver damage and mortality in global BRISC-null mice were markedly attenuated, which was accompanied by impaired hepatocyte death and hepatic inflammation response. Constantly, treatment with thiolutin, a potent BRISC inhibitor, remarkably alleviated D-GalN/LPS-induced liver injury in mice. By using bone marrow-reconstituted chimeric mice and cell-specific BRISC-deficient mice, we demonstrated that KCs are the key effector cells responsible for protection against D-GalN/LPS-induced liver injury in BRISC-deficient mice. Mechanistically, we found that hepatic and circulating levels of TNF-α, IL-6, MCP-1, and IL-1β, as well as TNF-α- and MCP-1-producing KCs, in BRISC-deleted mice were dramatically decreased as early as 1 h after D-GalN/LPS challenge, which occurred prior to the elevation of the liver injury markers. Moreover, LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokines production in KCs was significantly diminished by BRISC deficiency in vitro, which was accompanied by potently attenuated NF-κB activation. Restoration of NF-κB activation by two small molecular activators of NF-κB p65 effectively reversed the suppression of cytokines production in ABRO1-deficient KCs by LPS. In conclusion, BRISC is required for optimal activation of NF-κB-mediated proinflammatory cytokines production in LPS-treated KCs and contributes to acute liver injury. This study opens the possibility to develop new strategies for the inhibition of KCs-driven inflammation in liver diseases.

We studied the effects of colchicine timing because there are no guidelines about when to provide it during the perioperative period for patients with CAD.MethodsUp to January 1, 2023, seven electronic literature databases were screened (including three English databases and four Chinese databases). The physiological activity of the 50% ethanolic extract of Citrus aurantium flower before and after fermentation was investigated in this study. C. aurantium flowers grown in Taiwan were extracted using 100% methanol or 50% ethanol and then fermented by one of six microbes: four species of lactic acid bacteria (Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactobacillus brevis) anaerobically cultivated in MRS broth and two species of mold (Aspergillus oryzae and Aspergillus niger) aerobically cultivated in potato dextrose broth. The 50% ethanolic extract of C. aurantium flowers exhibited higher tyrosinase inhibition (IC50: 200.8 ± 11.6 mg/L) and antioxidative activity than did a 100% methanolic extract (IC50: 274.1 ± 15.7 mg/L). The 50% ethanolic extract fermented by L. brevis (L. brevis–fermented extract) exhibited the highest yield (86.2% ± 1.2%) and physiological activity. The L. brevis–fermented extract exhibited over 5.2-, 13.5-, 12.5-, 3.17-, and 4.29-fold higher antityrosinase activity, antioxidative activity, antibacterial activity, total flavonoid content, and antiwrinkle activity than did the unfermented extract. The L. brevis–fermented extract can be considered safe because it exerted no toxic effect on CCD-966SK or HEMn cells at concentrations of 400 and 200 mg/L, respectively. The fermented extract (40 mg/L) inhibited melanin formation, reducing it to 50.8% ± 2.3%. Furthermore, the L. brevis–fermented extract exhibited excellent antiaging and antiwrinkle activity, as determined from MMP-1, MMP-2, elastase, and collagenase activity. The improvement in physiological characteristics, especially the considerable formation of neohesperidin, is mainly attributable to biosynthesis or biotransformation by L. brevis during fermentation. In conclusion, the 50% ethanolic extract of C. aurantium flowers fermented with L. brevis can be used in cosmetics applications aiming for skin-whitening or antiwrinkle properties.

Abstract Background Capillary leak syndrome (CLS) is a rare disease characterized by profound vascular leakage and presents as a classic triad of hypotension, hypoalbuminemia and hemoconcentration. Severe CLS is mostly induced by sepsis and generally life-threatening in newborns, especially in premature infants. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) plays an important role of supportive treatment for severe CLS. Unfortunately, CRRT in preterm infants has rarely been well defined. Case presentation We report the case of a 11-day-old girl with CLS caused by sepsis, who was delivered by spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD) at gestational age of 25 weeks and 4 days, and a birth weight of 0.89 Kilograms(kg). The infant received powerful management consisting of united antibiotics, mechanical ventilation, intravenous albumin and hydroxyethyl starch infusion, vasoactive agents, small doses of glucocorticoids and other supportive treatments. However, the condition rapidly worsened with systemic edema, hypotension, pulmonary exudation, hypoxemia and anuria in about 40 h. Finally, we made great efforts to perform CRRT for her. Fortunately, the condition improved after 82 h’ CRRT, and the newborn was rescued and gradually recovered. Conclusion CRRT is an effective rescue therapeutic option for severe CLS and can be successfully applied even in extremely-low-birth-weight premature.

Abstract To detect substation faults for timely repair, this paper proposes a fault detection method that is based on the time series model and the statistical process control method to analyze the regulation and characteristics of the behavior in the switching process. As the first time, this paper proposes a fault detection model using SARIMA, statistical process control (SPC) methods, and 3σ criterion to analyze the characteristics in substation’s switching process. The employed approaches are both very common tools in the statistics field, however, via effectively combining them with industrial process fault diagnosis, these common statistical tolls play excellent role to achieve rich technical contributions. Finally, for different fault samples, the proposed method improves the rate of detection by at least 9% (and up to 15%) than other methods.

Abstract Background Probiotics are effective to rectify the imbalanced gut microbiota in the diseased cohorts. Two Bifidobacterium strains (LI09 and LI10) were found to alleviate D-galactosamine-induced liver damage (LD) in rats in our previous work. A series of bioinformatic and statistical analyses were performed to determine the vital bacteria in the gut microbiotas altered by the LI09 or LI10 in rats. Results Two groups of representative phylotypes could distinguish the gut microbiotas of LI09 or LI10 groups from the other groups. Among them, OTU170_Porphyromonadaceae acted as a gatekeeper in LI09 group, while OTU12_Bacteroides was determined with multiple correlations in the gut network of LI10 group. Multiple reduced OTUs associated with LC and increased OTUs associated with health were determined in LI09 or LI10 groups, among which, increased OTU51_Barnesiella and reduced OTU99_Barnesiella could be associated with the protective effects of both the two probiotics. The gut microbiotas in LI09, LI10 and positive control groups were clustered into three clusters, i.e., Cluster_1_Microbiota, Cluster_2_Microbiota and Cluster_3_Microbiota, by Partition Around Medoids clustering analysis. Cluster_2_Microbiota was determined at least dysbiotic status due to its greatest LD dysbiosis ratio, lowest levels of liver function variables and plasma cytokines compared with the two other clustered microbiotas, suggesting the treated rats in Cluster_2 were at better health status. Conclusion Our findings suggest that OTU170_Porphyromonadaceae and OTU12_Bacteroides are vital in the gut microbiotas altered by LI09 and LI10. Characteristics of the LD cohorts treated by LI09 or LI10 at different gut microbial colonization states could help monitor the cohorts’ health status.

Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) functions as a probiotic in animals, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We aim to evaluate the protective effects and definite mechanism by which orally administered B. cereus prevents D-galactosamine (D-GalN)-induced liver injury in rats. Twenty-one Sprague–Dawley rats were equally assigned into three groups (N = 7 animals per group). B. cereus ATCC11778 (2 × 109 colony-forming units/ml) was administered to the B. cereus group via gavage, and phosphate-buffered saline was administered to the positive control (PC) and negative control (NC) groups for 2 weeks. The PC and B. cereus groups received 1.1 g/kg D-GalN via an intraperitoneal injection to induce liver injury. The blood, terminal ileum, liver, kidney and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) were collected for histological examinations and to evaluate bacterial translocation. Liver function was also determined. Fecal samples were collected for deep sequencing of the 16S rRNA on an Illumina MiSeq platform. B. cereus significantly attenuated D-GalN-induced liver injury and improved serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and serum cholinesterase levels (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively). B. cereus modulated cytokine secretion, as indicated by the elevated levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) in both the liver and plasma (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively) and the substantially decreased levels of the cytokine IL-13 in the liver (P < 0.05). Pretreatment with B. cereus attenuated anoxygenic bacterial translocation in the veins (P < 0.05) and liver (P < 0.05) and upregulated the expression of the tight junction protein 1. The gut microbiota from the B. cereus group clustered separately from that of the PC group, with an increase in species of the Ruminococcaceae and Peptococcaceae families and a decrease in those of the Parabacteroides, Paraprevotella, and Desulfovibrio families. The potential probiotic B. cereus attenuated liver injury by restoring the gut flora balance and enhancing the intestinal barrier function.

The frequency-scanning-interferometry-based (FSI-based) absolute ranging technology is a type of ranging technology possessing a high precision and no ranging blind area, so it can be used for non-cooperative targets. However, due to a tiny movement of a target, the Doppler shift and the phase modulation are introduced into the beat signal which results in ranging accuracy decrease. In order to solve this problem, first the model of vibration effect is established, and then the beat signals of two adjacent scanning periods are processed to produce a signal that is immune to vibration. The proposed method is verified by the experiments, and the experimental results show that the effect of vibration compensation is better for the target with a lower vibration velocity and at a lower vibration frequency (lower than 6 Hz). When the target is subjected to a sinusoidal vibration with an amplitude of 10 μm at a frequency of 1 Hz, by using the proposed method the standard deviation is reduced from 775 to 12 μm. Moreover, in the natural environment, by using vibration compensation the standard deviation is reduced from 289 to 11 μm.

In wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs), there is a way to use mobile vehicles to charge node and collect data. It is a rational pattern to use two types of vehicles, one is for energy charging, and the other is for data collecting. These two types of vehicles, data collection vehicles (DCVs) and wireless charging vehicles (WCVs), are employed to achieve high efficiency in both data gathering and energy consumption. To handle the complex scheduling problem of multiple vehicles in large-scale networks, a twice-partition algorithm based on center points is proposed to divide the network into several parts. In addition, an anchor selection algorithm based on the tradeoff between neighbor amount and residual energy, named AS-NAE, is proposed to collect the zonal data. It can reduce the data transmission delay and the energy consumption for DCVs’ movement in the zonal. Besides, we design an optimization function to achieve maximum data throughput by adjusting data rate and link rate of each node. Finally, the effectiveness of proposed algorithm is validated by numerical simulation results in WRSNs.

Cell sheet-mediated tissue regeneration is a promising approach for corneal reconstruction. However, the fragility of bioengineered corneal endothelial cell (CEC) monolayers allows us to take advantage of cross-linked porous gelatin hydrogels as cell sheet carriers for intraocular delivery. The aim of this study was to further investigate the effects of biopolymer concentrations (5-15 wt%) on the characteristic and safety of hydrogel discs fabricated by a simple stirring process combined with freeze-drying method. Results of scanning electron microscopy, porosity measurements, and ninhydrin assays showed that, with increasing solid content, the pore size, porosity, and cross-linking index of carbodiimide treated samples significantly decreased from 508±30 to 292±42 µm, 59.8±1.1 to 33.2±1.9%, and 56.2±1.6 to 34.3±1.8%, respectively. The variation in biopolymer concentrations and degrees of cross-linking greatly affects the Young's modulus and swelling ratio of the gelatin carriers. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements and glucose permeation studies indicated that for the samples with a highest solid content, the highest pore wall thickness and the lowest fraction of mobile water may inhibit solute transport. When the biopolymer concentration is in the range of 5-10 wt%, the hydrogels have high freezable water content (0.89-0.93) and concentration of permeated glucose (591.3-615.5 µg/ml). These features are beneficial to the in vitro cultivation of CECs without limiting proliferation and changing expression of ion channel and pump genes such as ATP1A1, VDAC2, and AQP1. In vivo studies by analyzing the rabbit CEC morphology and count also demonstrate that the implanted gelatin discs with the highest solid content may cause unfavorable tissue-material interactions. It is concluded that the characteristics of cross-linked porous gelatin hydrogel carriers and their triggered biological responses are in relation to biopolymer concentration effects.

Continued interest in the metabolites of Wedelia trilobata (L.) Hitchc, a notoriously invasive weed in South China, led to the isolation of twenty-six ent-kaurane diterpenoids, including seven new ones 1–7. Their structures and relative configuration were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments. The antimicrobial activities of all isolated diterpenoids were evaluated against a panel of bacteria and fungi.

Purpose More literature studies have reported that alfentanil is safe and effective for labor analgesia. However, there is no unified consensus on the optimal dosage of alfentanil used for epidural analgesia. This study explored the concentration at 90% of minimum effective concentration (EC90) of alfentanil combined with 0.075% ropivacaine in patients undergoing epidural labor analgesia to infer reasonable drug compatibility and provide guidance for clinical practice. Methods In this prospective, single-center, double-blind study, a total of 45 singleton term primiparas with vaginal delivery who volunteered for epidural labor analgesia were recruited. The first maternal was administered with 3 μg/mL alfentanil combined with 0.075% ropivacaine with the infusion of 10 mL of the mixture every 50 min at a background dose of 3 mL/h. In the absence of PCEA, a total of 15 mL of the mixture is injected per hour. The subsequent alfentanil concentration was determined on the block efficacy of the previous case, using an up-down sequential allocation with a bias-coin design. 30 min after epidural labor analgesia, the block of patient failed with visual analog score (VAS)>3, the alfentanil concentration was increased in a 0.5 μg/mL gradient for the next patient, while the block was successful with VAS≤3, the alfentanil concentration was remained or decreased in a gradient according to a randomized response list for the next patient. EC90 and 95% confidence interval were calculated by linear interpolation and prediction model with R statistical software. Results In this study, the estimated EC90 of alfentanil was 3.85 μg/mL (95% confidence interval, 3.64-4.28 μg/mL). Conclusion When combined with ropivacaine 0.075%, the EC90 of alfentanil for epidural labor analgesia is 3.85 μg/mL in patients undergoing labor analgesia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Type 2 alveolar epithelial (AT2) cells of the lung are fundamental in regulating alveolar inflammation in response to injury. Impaired mitochondrial long-chain fatty acid β-oxidation (mtLCFAO) in AT2 cells is assumed to aggravate alveolar inflammation in acute lung injury (ALI), yet the importance of mtLCFAO to AT2 cell function needs to be defined. Here we show that expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1a (CPT1a), a mtLCFAO rate limiting enzyme, in AT2 cells is significantly decreased in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In mice, Cpt1a deletion in AT2 cells impairs mtLCFAO without reducing ATP production and alters surfactant phospholipid abundance in the alveoli. Impairing mtLCFAO in AT2 cells via deleting either Cpt1a or Acadl (acyl-CoA dehydrogenase long chain) restricts alveolar inflammation in ALI by hindering the production of the neutrophilic chemokine CXCL2 from AT2 cells. This study thus highlights mtLCFAO as immunometabolism to injury in AT2 cells and suggests impaired mtLCFAO in AT2 cells as an anti-inflammatory response in ARDS.

The reed snakes of the genus Calamaria Boie, 1827 are one of the largest groups of Asian snakes, distributed from northeast India to the Maluku Islands of east Indonesia. Recent research on the genus in China has revealed that the species diversity of the group was underestimated. In this study, morphological comparisons and mitochondrial DNA analysis revealed that a junior synonym of C. pavimentata Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854 — Calamaria berezowskii Günther, 1896 is valid, hence we redescribed and recovered the validity of C. berezowskii. This species can be distinguished from other congeners by the combination of the following characters: four supralabials; one preocular; rostral shield width larger than height; mental not touching anterior chin shields; eye diameter less than the distance from eye to mouth edge; less than 1/2 of the posterior chin shield meets in the midline; dorsal scales reduced to six rows at tail; indistinct light ring present in the nuchal region or a more or less distinct yellowish collar. Phylogenetically, this species is sister to C. pavimentata, with significant genetic differences (0.190) on mitochondrial gene Cyt b.

Summary: Background: Ovarian cancer has the highest mortality rate among gynaecological malignancies and is initially screened using ultrasound. Owing to the high complexity of ultrasound images of ovarian masses and the anatomical characteristics of the deep pelvic cavity, subjective assessment requires extensive experience and skill. Therefore, detecting the ovaries and ovarian masses and diagnose ovarian cancer are challenging. In the present study, we aimed to develop an automated deep learning framework, the Ovarian Multi-Task Attention Network (OvaMTA), for ovary and ovarian mass detection, segmentation, and classification, as well as further diagnosis of ovarian masses based on ultrasound screening. Methods: Between June 2020 and May 2022, the OvaMTA model was trained, validated and tested on a training and validation cohort including 6938 images and an internal testing cohort including 1584 images which were recruited from 21 hospitals involving women who underwent ultrasound examinations for ovarian masses. Subsequently, we recruited two external test cohorts from another two hospitals. We obtained 1896 images between February 2024 and April 2024 as image-based external test dataset, and further obtained 159 videos for the video-based external test dataset between April 2024 and May 2024. We developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system (termed OvaMTA) to diagnose ovarian masses using ultrasound screening. It includes two models: an entire image-based segmentation model, OvaMTA-Seg, for ovary detection and a diagnosis model, OvaMTA-Diagnosis, for predicting the pathological type of ovarian mass using image patches cropped by OvaMTA-Seg. The performance of the system was evaluated in one internal and two external validation cohorts, and compared with doctors’ assessments in real-world testing. We recruited eight physicians to assess the real-world data. The value of the system in assisting doctors with diagnosis was also evaluated. Findings: In terms of segmentation, OvaMTA-Seg achieved an average Dice score of 0.887 on the internal test set and 0.819 on the image-based external test set. OvaMTA-Seg also performed well in ovarian mass detection from test images, including healthy ovaries and masses (internal test area under the curve [AUC]: 0.970; external test AUC: 0.877). In terms of classification diagnosis prediction, OvaMTA-Diagnosis demonstrated high performance on image-based internal (AUC: 0.941) and external test sets (AUC: 0.941). In video-based external testing, OvaMTA recognised 159 videos with ovarian masses with AUC of 0.911, and is comparable to the performance of senior radiologists (ACC: 86.2 vs. 88.1, p = 0.50; SEN: 81.8 vs. 88.6, p = 0.16; SPE: 89.2 vs. 87.6, p = 0.68). There was a significant improvement in junior and intermediate radiologists who were assisted by AI compared to those who were not assisted by AI (ACC: 80.8 vs. 75.3, p = 0.00015; SEN: 79.5 vs. 74.6, p = 0.029; SPE: 81.7 vs. 75.8, p = 0.0032). General practitioners assisted by AI achieved an average performance of radiologists (ACC: 82.7 vs. 81.8, p = 0.80; SEN: 84.8 vs. 82.6, p = 0.72; SPE: 81.2 vs. 81.2, p > 0.99). Interpretation: The OvaMTA system based on ultrasound imaging is a simple and practical auxiliary tool for screening for ovarian cancer, with a diagnostic performance comparable to that of senior radiologists. This provides a potential tool for screening ovarian cancer. Ticks are important vectors of zoonotic pathogens, and represent an increasing threat for human and animal health. Considering the complex natural environments of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China, we expect the diverse tick species in this region. Here, we conduct a field survey on parasitic and host-seeking ticks. A total of 10,419 ticks were collected, which belonged to nine species of four genera. There were significant differences in terms of vegetation index, altitude, and seven climatic factors among the four tick genera —Hyalomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, and Ixodes, except between Haemaphysalis and Ixodes, where no significant differences were observed in these factors. The ecological niche modelling revealed that the suitable habitats for Hyalomma asiaticum was in the northwest Ningxia, with annual ground surface temperature as the most important factor. The suitable area for Dermacentor nuttalli was in the southwest and eastern regions of Ningxia with elevation as the highest contribution. D. silvarum was best suited to the southern Ningxia also with elevation as the most important factor. The four tick species including Haemaphysalis longicornis, Hae. qinghaiensis, Hae. japonica, and Ixodes persulcatus were best suited to the southernmost Ningxia with annual precipitation as the main factors for Hae. longicornis and elevation for the other three ticks. The results of predicted potential distribution of different tick species provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of ticks and tick-borne diseases in the region. Furthermore, the subsequent impacts of the Greening Program to regain forests and grasslands from former agricultural lands in Ningxia on tick population dynamics deserve further investigation.

The continual emergence of tick-borne rickettsioses has garnered widespread global attention. Candidatus Rickettsia barbariae (Candidatus R. barbariae), which emerged in Italy in 2008, has been detected in humans from northwestern China. However, the lack of Candidatus R. barbariae genome and isolated strains limits the understanding of its biological characteristics and genomic features. Here, we isolated the Rickettsia for the first time from eggs of Rhipicephalus turanicus in northwestern China, and assembled its whole genome after next-generation sequencing, so we modified the proposed name to Rickettsia barbariae (R. barbariae) to conform to the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the whole genome revealed that it was most closely related to the pathogenic Rickettsia parkeri and Rickettsia africae. All virulence factors, present in the pathogenic spotted fever group rickettsiae, were identified in the R. barbariae isolate. These findings highlight the pathogenic potential of R. barbariae and the necessity for enhanced surveillance of the emerging Rickettsia in the human population.

BackgroundMonitoring free-living physical activity (PA) through wearable devices enables the real-time assessment of activity features associated with health outcomes and provision of treatment recommendations and adjustments. The conclusions of studies on PA and health depend crucially on reliable statistical analyses of digital data. Data analytics, however, are challenging due to the various metrics adopted for measuring PA, different aims of studies, and complex temporal variations within variables. The application, interpretation, and appropriateness of these analytical tools have yet to be summarized. ObjectiveThis research aimed to review studies that used analytical methods for analyzing PA monitored by accelerometers. Specifically, this review addressed three questions: (1) What metrics are used to describe an individual’s free-living daily PA? (2) What are the current analytical tools for analyzing PA data, particularly under the aims of classification, association with health outcomes, and prediction of health events? and (3) What challenges exist in the analyses, and what recommendations for future research are suggested regarding the use of statistical methods in various research tasks? MethodsThis scoping review was conducted following an existing framework to map research studies by exploring the information about PA. Three databases, PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and the ACM Digital Library, were searched in February 2024 to identify related publications. Eligible articles were classification, association, or prediction studies involving human PA monitored through wearable accelerometers. ResultsAfter screening 1312 articles, 428 (32.62%) eligible studies were identified and categorized into at least 1 of the following 3 thematic categories: classification (75/428, 17.5%), association (342/428, 79.9%), and prediction (32/428, 7.5%). Most articles (414/428, 96.7%) derived PA variables from 3D acceleration, rather than 1D acceleration. All eligible articles (428/428, 100%) considered PA metrics represented in the time domain, while a small fraction (16/428, 3.7%) also considered PA metrics in the frequency domain. The number of studies evaluating the influence of PA on health conditions has increased greatly. Among the studies in our review, regression-type models were the most prevalent (373/428, 87.1%). The machine learning approach for classification research is also gaining popularity (32/75, 43%). In addition to summary statistics of PA, several recent studies used tools to incorporate PA trajectories and account for temporal patterns, including longitudinal data analysis with repeated PA measurements and functional data analysis with PA as a continuum for time-varying association (68/428, 15.9%). ConclusionsSummary metrics can quickly provide descriptions of the strength, frequency, and duration of individuals’ overall PA. When the distribution and profile of PA need to be evaluated or detected, considering PA metrics as longitudinal or functional data can provide detailed information and improve the understanding of the role PA plays in health. Depending on the research goal, appropriate analytical tools can ensure the reliability of the scientific findings.

Abstract Over the past few decades, there has been a significant interest in the study of essential genes, which are crucial for the survival of an organism under specific environmental conditions and thus have practical applications in the fields of synthetic biology and medicine. An increasing amount of experimental data on essential genes has been obtained with the continuous development of technological methods. Meanwhile, various computational prediction methods, related databases and web servers have emerged accordingly. To facilitate the study of essential genes, we have established a database of essential genes (DEG), which has become popular with continuous updates to facilitate essential gene feature analysis and prediction, drug and vaccine development, as well as artificial genome design and construction. In this article, we summarized the studies of essential genes, overviewed the relevant databases, and discussed their practical applications. Furthermore, we provided an overview of the main applications of DEG and conducted comprehensive analyses based on its latest version. However, it should be noted that the essential gene is a dynamic concept instead of a binary one, which presents both opportunities and challenges for their future development.

Codon usage bias (CUB) refers to different codons exhibiting varying frequencies of usage in the genome. Studying CUB is crucial for understanding genome structure, function, and evolutionary processes. Herein, we investigated the codon usage patterns and influencing factors of protein-coding genes in the chloroplast genomes of four sister genera (monophyletic Roscoea and Cautleya, and monophyletic Pommereschea and Rhynchanthus) from the Zingiberaceae family with contrasting habitats in southwestern China. These genera exhibit distinct habitats, providing a unique opportunity to explore the adaptive evolution of codon usage. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of nucleotide composition and codon usage on protein-coding genes in the chloroplast genomes. The study focused on understanding the relationship between codon usage and environmental adaptation, with a particular emphasis on genes associated with photosynthesis. Nucleotide composition analysis revealed that the overall G/C content of the coding genes was ˂ 48%, indicating an enrichment of A/T bases. Additionally, synonymous and optimal codons were biased toward ending with A/U bases. Natural selection is the primary factor influencing CUB characteristics, particularly photosynthesis-associated genes. We observed differential gene expressions related to light adaptation among sister genera inhabiting different environments. Certain codons were favored under specific conditions, possibly contributing to gene expression regulation in particular environments. This study provides insights into the adaptive evolution of these sister genera by analyzing CUB and offers theoretical assistance for understanding gene expression and regulation. In addition, the data support the relationship between RNA editing and CUB, and the findings shed light on potential research directions for investigating adaptive evolution.

Abstract Background and objective Maintaining the life satisfaction of frail middle-aged and older adults when they experience physical disability, lower activity status, or complex conditions that are related to each other is now an urgent issue. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide evidence for the impact of frailty in middle-aged and older adults on life satisfaction under the simultaneous occurrence and correlation of physical disability and physical activity status. Methods Data from the 2015 Taiwan Longitudinal Study in Ageing (TLSA) were analyzed by PROCESS in SPSS to explore three different mediation models (N = 4,421). The first was a parallel mediation model for exploring life satisfaction in middle-aged and older adults with frailty through physical disability or physical activity. The second was a serial mediation model for examining physical disability and physical activity in causal chains linked with a specific direction of flow and to test all combinations. The third was a moderated mediation model for testing whether the indirect effect of frailty status on life satisfaction through physical disability or physical activity was moderated by age stratification. Results Physical disability and physical activity partially mediated the relationship between frailty status and life satisfaction (IEOVERALL = -0.196, 95% CI: -0.255 to -0.139). The causal path with the highest indirect effect was found to be that between frailty and physical disability; increased frailty led to higher physical disability, which in turn affected physical activity, leading to lower life satisfaction (IE = 0.013, 95% CI: 0.008 to 0.019). The different stratifications by age significantly increased the mediating effect of physical activity (Index of Moderated Mediation = -0.107, SE = 0.052, 95% CI: -0.208 to -0.005) but did not reduce the mediating effect of physical disability. Conclusion This study provides evidence that physical activity and physical disability influence the development of frailty. It also has a significant impact on the life satisfaction of middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract Copper nanowires (CuNWs)-based thin film is one of the potential alternatives to tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) in terms of transparent conductive films (TCFs). However, the severe problem of atmospheric oxidation restricts their practical applications. In this work, we develop a simple approach to fabricate highly stable TCFs through the dip-coating method using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and CuNWs as the primary materials. Compared with previous works using toxic reduction agents, herein, the CuNWs are synthesized via a green aqueous process using glucose and lactic acid as the reductants, and rGO is prepared through the modified Hummers’ method followed by a hydrogen-annealing process to form hydrogen-annealing-reduced graphene oxide (h-rGO). In the rGO/CuNWs films, the dip-coated graphene oxide layer can increase the adhesion of the CuNWs on the substrate, and the fabricated h-rGO/CuNWs can exhibit high atmospheric oxidation resistance and excellent flexibility. The sheet resistance of the h-rGO/CuNWs film only increased from 25.1 to 42.2 Ω/sq after exposure to ambient atmosphere for 30 days and remained almost unchanged after the dynamic bending test for 2500 cycles at a constant radius of 5.3 mm. The h-rGO/CuNWs TCF can be not only fabricated via a route with a superior inexpensive and safe method but also possessed competitive optoelectronic properties with high electrical stability and flexibility, demonstrating great opportunities for future optoelectronic applications.

Abstract Pityriasis rubra pilaris is an inflammatory dermatologic disorder of unknown cause. We report a 67‐year‐old man with Pityriasis rubra pilaris might induced by COVID‐19 vaccination. The patient developed the lesions after the first dose of vaccine and significantly aggravated after the second dose. He had poor effect and liver function impairment developed after acitretin used, but achieved satisfactory efficacy after replacement to ixekizumab, an interleukin‐17A inhibitor.

Abstract Aims The study aimed to investigate the relationship among physical symptom distress, sleep quality, depression and spiritual well‐being of patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) and analyse the predictors of the spiritual well‐being. Design A cross‐sectional study. Methods A total of 188 patients were selected. The collection tools were the Physical Symptom Distress Scale, the Chinese version of PSQI, the Geriatric Depression Scale and the Spiritual Well‐Being Scale. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted using SPSS 20.0. Results Patients with different treatments exhibited significantly different physical symptom distress. Furthermore, spiritual well‐being was significantly negatively correlated with physical symptom distress, poor sleep disturbances and depression. After controlling for the variables, sleep quality and haemodialysis treatment were the key predictors of spiritual well‐being. Conclusion To achieve holistic caregiving for patients’ physiological, psychological and spiritual health, Nurses should evaluate patients’ symptom distress and depression when providing care for these patients to enhance their spiritual well‐being.

Background: Previous studies have shown that the development of thrombocytopenia was associated with the elevated plasma concentration of linezolid, but little is known about the relationship between other uncommon adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and plasma concentration. The appropriate dosing adjustment has remained controversial. This prospective observational study was conducted to investigate the association between the plasma concentration of linezolid, ADRs, and clinical outcomes. Methods: Adult patients on linezolid treatment undergoing at least one therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) were enrolled. The association between linezolid concentrations and ADRs was examined by multivariate Cox regression model. Predictors of linezolid concentrations was determined by linear regression model. The cut-off point of linezolid concentration and the effect of dosing adjustments based on TDM was also explored. Results: Of 50 patients enrolled in the study, plasma concentrations were 1.5–3 times higher than what was described in the prescribing information. The median minimum concentration (Cmin) was significantly higher in patients with thrombocytopenia compared to patients without thrombocytopenia (13.0 vs. 7.2 μg/mL, P = 0.0273), and a higher median maximum concentration was also observed in patients with lactic acidosis (33.0 vs. 27.5 μg/mL, P = 0.0420). The Cmin was elevated in patients with advanced age and severely impaired renal function. Dosing adjustment tailored by early TDM with the upper limit of Cmin 9 μg/mL may improve platelet counts. Conclusion: Elevated linezolid concentrations were associated with thrombocytopenia and lactic acidosis. TDM-guided dosing adjustment could be considered as a pragmatic way to mitigate thrombocytopenia.

Fulminant myocarditis (FM) is a life-threatening disease in children. With a rapid, progressive course of deterioration, it causes refractory cardiorespiratory failure even with optimal clinical intervention. We present the case of a 9-year-old girl with FM complicated by cardiogenic shock, malignant arrhythmia, and refractory cardiac arrest. She received effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation, therapeutic hypothermia, and other supportive treatments. However, the patient rapidly worsened into pulseless ventricular tachycardia and refractory cardiac arrest. Therefore, we performed extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to establish spontaneous circulation after the failure of standard resuscitation measures. The girl recovered with intact cardiac and neurocognitive functions after continued ECMO treatment for 221 hours. Therefore, ECMO is an effective rescue therapeutics for FM, especially when complicated with refractory cardiac arrest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Airway remodeling is a hallmark of bronchial asthma. Our group has previously reported that the thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), an airway epithelial-derived cytokine, has a central role in the pathogenesis of airway remodeling, and that toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 signaling in epithelial cells may trigger T-helper 2 (Th2) immune responses by overexpression of TSLP. However, it is currently unclear whether TLR4 is a target in the treatment of airway remodeling in asthma. The present study established a house dust mite (HDM)-induced chronic asthmatic model in female BALB/c mice and treated the HDM-exposed mice with 3 mg/kg TAK242, as a TLR4 antagonist, 30 min prior to HDM challenge for up to 2 weeks. General structural changes in the airways were subsequently evaluated and the levels of TSLP in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and interleukin (IL)-4, IL-13 and interferon (IFN)-γ in the blood serum were determined. Results indicated that TAK242 treatment markedly reduced pathological changes in the airways of HDM-induced asthmatic mice, as demonstrated by reductions in airway wall thickening, peribronchial collagen deposition and subepithelial fibrosis. Furthermore, airway hyperresponsiveness to inhaled methacholine and the levels of TSLP in the BALF and IL-4, IL-13 and IFN-γ in the peripheral blood were significantly reduced by TAK242 treatment (P<0.05). Furthermore, the shift in the IFN-γ/IL-4 ratio induced by HDM treatment was significantly reversed following TAK242 pretreatment, which indicated that TAK242 modulated Th1/Th2 immune homeostasis in the chronic asthma mouse model. The present findings in a chronic asthma mouse model suggest that TAK242 may be an efficient treatment for airway remodeling, possibly through the inhibition of TSLP overexpression and Th2 airway inflammation. Background and purpose: Early or primary application of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) has been recently suggested not to offer benefit to patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, the rescue effects of HFOV on severe pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) with hypoxemia refractory to conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) remain unclear. This study aimed to determine whether severe PARDS children would benefit from HFOV when oxygenation deteriorated on CMV and to identify any potential risk factors related to mortality. Patients and methods: In a retrospective and observational study, 48 children with severe PARDS between January 2009 and July 2015 were divided into two groups: 26 in HFOV group and 22 in CMV group .Data regarding demographic, underlying conditions, arterial blood gases and clinical outcomes were collected and analyzed. Results: The arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2)/fraction of inspiration oxygen (FiO2) ratio and PaO2 improved significantly during HFOV, whereas arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) and oxygenation index decreased. There was no statistical difference in the in-hospital mortality between the groups (P=0.367). The odds ratio of survival in HFOV group u, was 2.74 (95% confidence interval 0.52 to 14.58, P=0.237). The pediatric intensive care unit length of stay and total ventilation duration were longer in HFOV group (P=0.048 andP=0.000, respectively). Vasoactive agents were used more frequently in HFOV group (P=0.007). The incidence of new air leak was similar between the two groups (P=0.674). The presence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and heavier body weight were identified as predictors of mortality in the HFOV group (P=0.006 and P=0.020, respectively). Conclusion: HFOV as an efficient alternative therapy could significantly improve hypoxemia and promote CO2 removal in severe PARDS children when oxygenation progressively worsens on CMV. Allogeneic peripheral blood stem cells transplantation (allo-PBSCT) or allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (allo-BMT) have been widely used to treat patients exhibiting certain severe illnesses. However, previous studies have shown that the biological materials of allo-PBSCT or allo-BMT recipients may not constitute credible materials for personal identification. In the present study, four types of commonly used samples were collected from a male individual following gender-matched allo-BMT. Autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) and Y-STR markers analysis, based on polymerase chain reaction, were used to evaluate the chimerism status. The results showed that the blood sample were all donor type, the buccal swab sample were mixed chimerism, and the sperm and hair follicle samples maintained a recipient origin of 100%. In conclusion, identical results were obtained by the two methods and it was confirmed that DNA extracted from hair follicles and sperm can be used as a reference for the pre-transplant genotype DNA profile of the recipient in the gender-match allo-BMT or -PBSCT. This meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of the matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7)-181A/G polymorphism on cancer risk. Twenty-seven case-control studies were identified via a literature search through PubMed, Web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases. Odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were applied to assess the strength of the association between MMP7-181A/G polymorphism and cancer risk. The 27 studies were further assessed according to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) and Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium (HWD), with 24 case-control studies found to be under HWE. A significant association was observed between MMP7-181A/G polymorphism and increased cancer risk (cervical and other types of cancer) in Asian, but not in European populations. The interaction between cells and biopolymers is the evaluation indicator of the biocompatibility of materials. The purpose of this work was to examine the responses of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells to genipin (GP) or glutaraldehyde (GTA) cross-linked chitosan by means of cell viability assays, cytokine expression analyses, and apoptosis assays. Evaluations of non-cross-linked chitosan were conducted simultaneously for comparison. Both GP and GTA treated samples with the same extent of cross-linking (around 80%) were prepared by varying cross-linking time. Our results showed that GP cross-linking was carried out by either radical polymerization of the monomers or SN2 nucleophilic substitution reaction involving the replacement of the ester group on the monomer with a secondary amide linkage. On the other hand, GTA could react with free amino groups of chitosan, leading to the formation of either the Schiff bases or the Michael-type adducts with terminal aldehydes. The biocompatibility of non-cross-linked chitosan membranes was demonstrated by the absence of any signs of toxicity or inflammation reaction. The present study showed that the ARPE-19 cells exposed to GTA cross-linked chitosan membranes had significantly higher cytotoxicity, interleukin-6 levels, and number of TUNEL-positive nuclei than did those exposed to GP treated samples. In addition, the materials modified with GTA trigger apoptosis at an early stage and may induce toxicity in the RPE cells later. The findings suggest that while the chitosan molecules bridged by GP are satisfactorily cytocompatible, the counterparts treated by GTA do not seem to be tolerated. In terms of material safety, the GP cross-linked chitosan may be compatible with human RPE cells and may have a potential application as delivery carriers in the treatment of posterior segment diseases. An efficient carrier for corneal endothelial cell therapy should deliver and retain the cell sheet transplants at the site of injury without causing adverse effects. Here we introduced a simple stirring process combined with freeze-drying (SFD1) method for the development of gelatin hydrogels with enlarged pore structure that can improve the aqueous humor circulation. Samples fabricated by air-drying (AD) or freeze-drying method were used for comparison. After cross-linking with 1 mM 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC), the discs were investigated to assess their functionality. The simultaneous presence of ice crystals and gas bubbles resulted in large pore size (461 ± 85 μm) and high porosity (48.0 ± 1.9%) of SFD1 carriers. Among all of the samples studied, the SFD1 hydrogels showed the most appropriate swelling characteristics without squeezing effect on the anterior segment tissues of the eye. The enlarged pore structure also allowed carriers to contain the highest fraction of mobile water and exhibit the lowest resistance to the glucose permeation. In comparison with AD samples, the SFD1 materials had better cytocompatibility and biocompatibility and more effectively prevented a drastic change of intraocular pressure. Rheological measurements showed that the SFD1 hydrogels behaved like an elastic solid and had a tough (rigid and deformable) texture. As a temporary supporter, the biodegradable gelatin hydrogel could facilitate cell sheet transfer and avoid long-term residence of foreign carriers in the body. Due to its innocuous nature, hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the most commonly used biopolymers for ophthalmic applications. We recently developed a cell sheet delivery system using carbodiimide cross-linked HA carriers. Chemical cross-linking provides an improvement in stability of polymer gels, but probably causes toxic side-effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the ocular biocompatibility of HA hydrogels cross-linked by 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC). HA discs without cross-linking and glutaraldehyde (GTA) cross-linked HA samples were used for comparison. The disc implants were inserted in the anterior chamber of rabbit eyes for 24 weeks and characterized by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, histology and scanning electron microscopy. The ophthalmic parameters obtained from biomicroscopic examinations were also scored to provide a quantitative grading system. Results of this study showed that the HA discs cross-linked with EDC had better ocular biocompatibility than those with GTA. The continued residence of GTA cross-linked HA implants in the intraocular cavity elicited severe tissue responses and significant foreign body reactions, whereas no adverse inflammatory reaction was observed after contact with non-cross-linked HA or EDC cross-linked HA samples. It is concluded that the cross-linking agent type gives influence on ocular biocompatibility of cell carriers and the EDC-HA hydrogel is an ideal candidate for use as an implantable material in cell sheet delivery applications. This study aimed to develop an automated optical inspection (AOI) system that can rapidly and precisely measure the dimensions of microchannels embedded inside a transparent polymeric substrate, and can eventually be used on the production line of a factory. The AOI system is constructed based on Snell’s law. The concept holds that, when light travels through two transparent media (air and the microfluidic chip transparent material), by capturing the parallel refracted light from a light source that went through the microchannel using a camera with a telecentric lens, the image can be analyzed using formulas derived from Snell’s law to measure the dimensions of the microchannel cross-section. Through the NI LabVIEW 2018 SP1 programming interface, we programmed this system to automatically analyze the captured image and acquire all the needed data. The system then processes these data using custom-developed formulas to calculate the height and width measurements of the microchannel cross-sections and presents the results on the human–machine interface (HMI). In this study, a single and straight microchannel with a cross-sectional area of 300 μm × 300 μm and length of 44 mm was micromachined and sealed with another polymeric substrate by a solvent bonding method for experimentations. With this system, 45 cross-sectional areas along the straight microchannel were measured within 20 s, and experiment results showed that the average measured error was less than 2%.

Two probiotic strains, Lactobacillus johnsonii x-1d-2 and Lactobacillus mucosae x-4w-1, originally isolated from piglet feces, have been demonstrated to possess antimicrobial activities, antibiotic resistances and interleukin-6 induction ability in RAW 267.4 macrophages in our previous study. These characteristics make L. johnsonii x-1d-2 and L. mucosae x-4w-1 good candidates for application in feed probiotics. In this study, soybeal meal, molasses and sodium acetate were selected to optimize the growth medium for cultivation of L. johnsonii x-1d-2 and L. mucosae x-4w-1. These two strains were then freeze-dried and mixed into the basal diet to feed the weaned piglets. The effects of L. johnsonii x-1d-2 and L. mucosae x-4w-1 on the growth performance and fecal microflora of weaned piglets were investigated. The results showed that the bacterial numbers of L. johnsonii x-1d-2 and L. mucosae x-4w-1 reached a maximum of 8.90 and 9.30 log CFU/mL, respectively, when growing in optimal medium consisting of 5.5% (wt/vol) soybean meal, 1.0% (wt/vol) molasses and 1.0% (wt/vol) sodium acetate. The medium cost was 96% lower than the commercial de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe medium. Zhuxiang chicken is a valuable chicken breed in the southwest of China. In this study, we firstly obtained the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Zhuxiang chicken using PCR amplification, sequencing and assembling. The total length of the mitochondrial genome was 16,789 bp, based on composition of 30.24% for A, 23.71% for T, 32.54% for C, 13.51% for G, contained a D-loop region (non-coding control region), 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes and 22 transfer RNA. This research was significant for mtDNA structure and provided phylogenetic analysis of D-loop sequence for carrying out Zhuxiang chicken germplasm resources protection, rational breeding, origin and evolution studies.

All aquifers are heterogeneous to a certain degree. The spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity K(x, y, z), or aquifer heterogeneity, significantly influences the groundwater flow movement and associated solute transport. Of particular importance in designing an in-situ remediation plan is a knowledge of low-K layers because they are less accessible to remedial agents and form a bottleneck in remediation. The characterization of aquifer heterogeneity is essential to the solution of many practical and scientific groundwater problems. This article reviews the field technique using the multilevel slug test (MLST), which determines a series of K estimates at depths of interest in a well by making use of a double-packer system. The K(z) obtained manifests the vertical variation of hydraulic conductivity in the vicinity of the test well, and the combination of K(z) from different wells gives rise to a three-dimensional description of K(x, y, z). The MLST response is rather sensitive to hydraulic conductivity variation; e.g., it is oscillatory for highly permeable conditions (K > 5 × 10-4 m s-1) and a nonoscillatory for K < 5 × 10-4 m s-1. In this article we discuss the instrumentation of the double-packer system, the implementation of the depth-specific slug test, the data analysis methods for a spectrum of response characteristics usually observed in the field, and field applications of the MLST.
