Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has emerged as a promising technology for monitoring crop plant height due to its ability to capture the geometric properties of crops. Radar vegetation index (RVI) has been extensively utilized for qualitative and quantitative remote sensing monitoring of vegetation growth dynamics. However, the combination of crop, growing environment, and temporal dynamics makes crop monitoring data a complex task. Despite the relatively simple underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon, there is still a need for more research to identify specific vegetation structures that correspond to changes in the response of vegetation indices. Building upon this premise, this study utilized a dynamic monitoring model to conduct dynamic monitoring of plant height for three common crops: rice, wheat, and maize. The findings revealed that (1) models developed for specific spatial and temporal scales of particular crop varieties may not accurately predict crop growth in different regions or with different varieties in a timely manner, due to growth variations; (2) these models maintain accuracy over a range of plant heights, such as rice at around 70cm, wheat at around 50cm, and maize at around 150cm; (3) among the three crops, planting density was identified as the main factor influencing the differences in RVI response. This research contributes to our comprehension of the dynamic response of RVI to different growth conditions in crops, and offers valuable insights and references for agricultural monitoring.

The FecB gene is one of those responsible for regulating reproductive traits in sheep. This experiment was designed to explore the impact of SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) within the FecB gene on both the reproductive and body size performance of sheep. In this experiment, two SNP sites were identified as C413217T and A431965G. Through analysis of genetic diversity and correlations, we aimed to identify combinations of genotypes and haplotypes that influence reproductive performance and body size performance. The most prominent genotypes associated with lambing performance were identified as AA and CT, with the dominant haplotype combination being AACT. For body size performance, the dominant genotypes were AA and CC, while the dominant haplotype combination was AACC. These advantageous genotypes and haplotype combinations are conducive to promoting the selection and improvement of sheep breeds, advancing the progress of sheep genetic breeding, and providing theoretical support for the breeding of higher-fertility sheep.

The article compares two works — «Manchurian Princess» by Russian emigrant writer A. Heidok and «Spring in a Small Town» by Chinese writer Xiao Hong, which were created in approximately the same epoch and reproduce the same place of action — the north-east of China. Heidok’s work appealed to the mystical ideas of Chinese culture (the idea of reincarnation); Xiao Hong’s work was deeply influenced by Russian classical literature. Both stories present a story of tragic love, which breaks the traditions of a conservative society and radically changes the lives of the characters. The meaning of the characters’ lives lies in returning to the true nature of man — love, because only in it does existence find meaning; at the same time, the theme of love is closely intertwined with the theme of death. In both works there is an intersection of different epochs — the past and the present; at the same time, it is the past that determines the course of events of the present. Specific situations of the characters’ lives are revealed in a broad historical and cultural space, which allows the author to put before the readers the most important ethical and philosophical problems. A. Heidok’s story shows how life in the previous birth influences the actions of a person in subsequent births; in Xiao Hong’s story «the past» is the power of tradition, which does not allow a girl to get an education and determine her own destiny.

Permafrost has been warming and thawing globally, with subsequent effects on the climate, hydrology, and the ecosystem. However, the permafrost thermal state variation in the northern lower limit of the permafrost zone (Xidatan) on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) is unclear. This study attempts to explore the changes and variability in this permafrost using historical (1970–2019) and future projection datasets from remote-sensing-based land surface temperature product (LST) and climate projections from Earth system model (ESM) outputs of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 and 6 (CMIP5, CMIP6). Our model considers phase-change processes of soil pore water, thermal-property differences between frozen and unfrozen soil, geothermal flux flow, and the ground ice effect. Our model can consistently reproduce the vertical ground temperature profiles and active layer thickness (ALT), recognizing permafrost boundaries, and capture the evolution of the permafrost thermal regime. The spatial distribution of permafrost and its thermal conditions over the study area were controlled by elevation with a strong influence of slope orientation. From 1970 to 2019, the mean annual ground temperature (MAGT) in the region warmed by 0.49 ∘C in the continuous permafrost zone and 0.40 ∘C in the discontinuous permafrost zone. The lowest elevation of the permafrost boundary (on the north-facing slopes) rose approximately 47 m, and the northern boundary of discontinuous permafrost retreated southwards by approximately 1–2 km, while the lowest elevation of the permafrost boundary remained unchanged for the continuous permafrost zone. The warming rate in MAGT is projected to be more pronounced under shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) than under representative concentration pathways (RCPs), but there are no distinct discrepancies in the areal extent of the continuous and discontinuous permafrost and seasonally frozen ground among SSP and RCP scenarios. This study highlights the slow delaying process of the response of permafrost in the QTP to a warming climate, especially in terms of the areal extent of permafrost distribution.

Intro: HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are a significant factor impacting the quality of life in HIV-1 patients. Kynurenic acid (KYNA), derived from tryptophan (Trp) in a physiological state, is a neuroprotective molecule associated with astrocytes. Previous results suggested KYNA level in the brain of HIV-1 gp120 transgenic mice (Tg mice) fed with Trp is higher than that in the control group, and Tg mice were successfully established for simulating the HAND. In this study, Morris Water Maze (MWM) to determine behavioral changes in mice, evaluating the effect of KYNA on cognitive impairment in Tg mice. Methods: The mice were randomly numbered and divided into four groups (n=10): WT, WT+0.1%Trp, Tg mice, and Tg mice+0.1%Trp, fed for one month by grouping. All groups of mice intake water and food freely during this period. The data of the incubation period, crossing times, and the quadrant residence time were recorded by MWM and analyzed with SPSS 22.0. Findings: The residence time of the Tg mice+Trp group in the hidden platform quadrant was increased (P0.05). And it extended the incubation period of WT group without a statistical difference (P>0.05). Ultimately, the platform crossing times of both gp120+Trp group and WT+Trp group without a statistical difference (P>0.05). Those results suggested that MWM assessing learning and cognitive ability is feasible. Conclusion: MWM could evaluate the protective effect of KYNA on cognitive impairment in HIV-1 gp120 transgenic mice.

Selin Co, located within permafrost regions surrounded by glaciers, has exhibited the greatest increase in water storage among all the lakes on the Tibetan Plateau over the last 50 years. Most of the increased lake water volume has been attributed to increased precipitation and the accelerated melting of glacier ice, but these processes are still not sufficient to close the water budget with the expansion of Selin Co. Ground ice meltwater released by thawing permafrost due to continuous climate warming over the past several decades is regarded as another source of lake expansion. This study presents the first attempt to quantify the water contribution of ground ice melting to the expansion of Selin Co by evaluating the ground surface deformation. We monitored the spatial distribution of surface deformation in the Selin Co basin using the small baseline subset (SBAS) interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technique and compared the results with the findings of field surveys. Then, the ground ice meltwater volume in the watershed was calculated based on the cumulated settlement. Finally, this volume was compared with the lake volume change during the same period, and the contribution ratio was derived. SBAS-InSAR monitoring during 2017–2020 illustrated widespread and large subsidence in the upstream section of the Zhajiazangbu subbasin, where widespread continuous permafrost is present. The terrain subsidence rate was normally between 5 and 20 mm a−1, indicating rapid ground ice loss in the region. The ground ice meltwater was released at a rate of ∼57×106 m3 a−1, and the rate of increase in lake water storage was ∼485×106 m3 a−1 during the same period, with ground ice meltwater contributing ∼12 % of the lake volume increase. This study contributes to explaining the rapid expansion of Selin Co and equilibrating the water balance at the watershed scale. More importantly, the proposed method can be extended to other watersheds underlain by permafrost and help in understanding the hydrological changes in these watersheds.

Relict permafrost presents an ideal opportunity to understand the impacts of climatic warming on the ground thermal regime since it is characterized by a mean annual ground temperature close to 0 ∘C and relatively thin permafrost. The long-term and continuous observations of permafrost thermal state and climate background are of great importance to reveal the links between the energy balance on hourly to annual timescales, to evaluate the variations in permafrost thermal state over multiannual periods and to validate the remote sensing dataset. We present 11 years of meteorological and soil data from the Mahan Mountain relict permafrost site of northeastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The meteorological data comprise air and land surface temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, shortwave and longwave downwards and upwards radiation, water vapor pressure, and precipitation on a half-hour timescale. The active layer data include daily soil temperature and soil volumetric water content at five different depths. The permafrost data consist of the ground temperature at 20 different depths up to 28.4 m. The high-quality and long-term datasets are expected to serve as accurate forcing data in land surface models and evaluate remote-sensing products for a broader geoscientific community. Permafrost has great influences on the climatic, hydrological, and ecological systems on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). The changing permafrost and its impact have been attracting great attention worldwide like never before. More observational and modeling approaches are needed to promote an understanding of permafrost thermal state and climatic conditions on the QTP. However, limited data on the permafrost thermal state and climate background have been sporadically reported in different pieces of literature due to the difficulties of accessing and working in this region where the weather is severe, environmental conditions are harsh, and the topographic and morphological features are complex. From the 1990s, we began to establish a permafrost monitoring network on the QTP. Meteorological variables were measured by automatic meteorological systems. The soil temperature and moisture data were collected from an integrated observation system in the active layer. Deep ground temperature (GT) was observed from boreholes. In this study, a comprehensive dataset consisting of long-term meteorological, GT, soil moisture, and soil temperature data was compiled after quality control from an integrated, distributed, and multiscale observation network in the permafrost regions of QTP. The dataset is helpful for scientists with multiple study fields (i.e., climate, cryospheric, ecology and hydrology, meteorology science), which will significantly promote the verification, development, and improvement of hydrological models, land surface process models, and climate models on the QTP. Extensive and rigorous model intercomparison is of great importance before model application due to the uncertainties in current land surface models (LSMs). Without considering the uncertainties in forcing data and model parameters, this study designed an ensemble of 55 296 experiments to evaluate the Noah LSM with multi-parameterization (Noah-MP) for snow cover events (SCEs), soil temperature (ST) and soil liquid water (SLW) simulation, and investigated the sensitivity of parameterization schemes at a typical permafrost site on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). The results showed that Noah-MP systematically overestimates snow cover, which could be greatly resolved when adopting the sublimation from wind and a semi-implicit snow/soil temperature time scheme. As a result of the overestimated snow, Noah-MP generally underestimates ST, which is mostly influenced by the snow process. A systematic cold bias and large uncertainties in soil temperature remain after eliminating the effects of snow, particularly in the deep layers and during the cold season. The combination of roughness length for heat and under-canopy (below-canopy) aerodynamic resistance contributes to resolving the cold bias in soil temperature. In addition, Noah-MP generally underestimates top SLW. The runoff and groundwater (RUN) process dominates the SLW simulation in comparison to the very limited impacts of all other physical processes. The analysis of the model structural uncertainties and characteristics of each scheme would be constructive to a better understanding of the land surface processes in the permafrost regions of the QTP as well as to further model improvements towards soil hydrothermal regime modeling using LSMs.

Laser scanning or photogrammetry are useful individual techniques for digital documentation of cultural heritage sites. However, these techniques are of limited usage if cultural heritage such as the Great Wall is in harsh geographical conditions. The Great Wall is usually built on the ridge with cliffs on both sides, so it is very difficult to construct scaffolding. Therefore, the three-dimensional (3D) data obtained from the traditional 3D laser scanning is not complete. As UAV cannot enter the enemy tower, the 3D structure data inside the enemy tower with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry is missing. In order to explore effective methods to completely collect the 3D data of cultural heritage under harsh geographical environment, this study focuses on establishing a 3D model and the associated digital documentation for the No.15 enemy tower of the New Guangwu Great Wall using a combination of terrestrial laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry. This paper proposes an integrated data collection method and reduces the layout of image control points using RTK-UAV technology, which improved work efficiency and reduced work risks as well. In this paper, the internal structure data of the Great Wall enemy tower was collected by laser scanning, the external structure data was collected by UAV photogrammetry, and data fusion was based on ICP algorithm. Finally, we obtained the complete and high quality 3D digital documentation of the Great Wall enemy tower, the data can be displayed digitally and help heritage experts complete the Great Wall's restoration. This study demonstrates the potential of integrating terrestrial laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry in 3D digital documentation of cultural heritage sites.

Understanding the composition, temporal variability and source apportionment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is necessary for determining effective control measures to minimize VOCs and their related photochemical pollution. To provide a comprehensive analysis of VOC sources and their contributions to ozone (O3) formation in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) – a region experiencing the highest rates of industrial and economic development in China – we conducted a 1-year sampling exercise using a thermal desorption GC (gas chromatography) system for the first time at an urban site in Nanjing (JAES site). Alkanes were the dominant group at the JAES site, contributing ∼53 % to the observed total VOCs, followed by aromatics (∼17 %), acetylene (∼17 %) and alkenes (∼13 %). We identified seasonal variability in total VOCs (TVOCs) with maximum and minimum concentrations in winter and summer, respectively. Morning and evening peaks and a daytime trough were identified in the diurnal VOC patterns. We identified VOC sources using positive matrix factorization (PMF) and assessed their contributions to photochemical O3 formation by calculating the O3 formation potential (OFP) based on the mass concentrations and maximum incremental reactivities of VOCs. The PMF model identified five dominant VOC sources, with highest contributions from diesel vehicular exhaust (34±5 %), followed by gasoline vehicular exhaust (27±3 %), industrial emissions (19±2 %), fuel evaporation (15±2 %) and biogenic emissions (4±1 %). The results of the OFP calculation inferred that VOCs from industrial and vehicular emissions were found to be the dominant precursors for OFP, particularly the VOC species of xylenes, toluene and propene, and top priority should be given to these for the alleviation of photochemical smog. Our results therefore highlight that priority should be given to limited VOC sources and species for effective control of O3 formation in Nanjing.

To develop multifunctional delivery systems of targeted properties for biomedical applications, hybrid fiber-nanoparticle matrices capable of controlled and monitored nanoparticles (NPs) delivery properties were prepared. Firstly, electropinning technique was applied to produce carbon nanotubes (CNTs) incorporated biodegradable poly(ϵ-caprolactone)/gelatin (PG) polymer fibers (PGC fibers). Subsequently, the photoluminescent mesoporous silica nanoparticles (PLMSNs) were electrostatically attached on the surface of PGC fibers to form a localized delivery platform. The PGC-PLMSNs fibers can emit red light under excitation at ~395 nm, 465 nm, and ~533 nm. Additionally, under NIR (808 nm) irradiation, PGC-PLMSNs fibers revealed good photothermal effect. PLMSNs loading efficiency onto the PGC fibers and PLMSNs release kinetics were assessed by TG method. More importantly, the 808 nm NIR irradiation enabled remarkably promoted PLMSNs release rate, validating the typical NIR-triggered release properties. Meanwhile, PLMSNs released from the composite fibers could be optically monitored by decrease in the intensity of red emission. These results suggest the possibility to develop the localized therapeutic device that may inspire other means of treatment method for cancer therapy.

It is difficult to extract grassland accurately by traditional classification methods, such as supervised method based on pixels or objects. This paper proposed a new method combing the multi-level segmentation with CART (classification and regression tree) model. The multi-level segmentation which combined the multi-resolution segmentation and the spectral difference segmentation could avoid the over and insufficient segmentation seen in the single segmentation mode. The CART model was established based on the spectral characteristics and texture feature which were excavated from training sample data. Xilinhaote City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was chosen as the typical study area and the proposed method was verified by using visual interpretation results as approximate truth value. Meanwhile, the comparison with the nearest neighbor supervised classification method was obtained. The experimental results showed that the total precision of classification and the Kappa coefficient of the proposed method was 95 % and 0.9, respectively. However, the total precision of classification and the Kappa coefficient of the nearest neighbor supervised classification method was 80 % and 0.56, respectively. The result suggested that the accuracy of classification proposed in this paper was higher than the nearest neighbor supervised classification method. The experiment certificated that the proposed method was an effective extraction method of grassland information, which could enhance the boundary of grassland classification and avoid the restriction of grassland distribution scale. This method was also applicable to the extraction of grassland information in other regions with complicated spatial features, which could avoid the interference of woodland, arable land and water body effectively.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) has the largest areas of permafrost terrain in the mid- and low-latitude regions of the world. Some permafrost distribution maps have been compiled but, due to limited data sources, ambiguous criteria, inadequate validation, and deficiency of high-quality spatial data sets, there is high uncertainty in the mapping of the permafrost distribution on the TP. We generated a new permafrost map based on freezing and thawing indices from modified Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperatures (LSTs) and validated this map using various ground-based data sets. The soil thermal properties of five soil types across the TP were estimated according to an empirical equation and soil properties (moisture content and bulk density). The temperature at the top of permafrost (TTOP) model was applied to simulate the permafrost distribution. Permafrost, seasonally frozen ground, and unfrozen ground covered areas of 1.06 × 106 km2 (0.97–1.15 × 106 km2, 90 % confidence interval) (40 %), 1.46 × 106 (56 %), and 0.03 × 106 km2 (1 %), respectively, excluding glaciers and lakes. Ground-based observations of the permafrost distribution across the five investigated regions (IRs, located in the transition zones of the permafrost and seasonally frozen ground) and three highway transects (across the entire permafrost regions from north to south) were used to validate the model. Validation results showed that the kappa coefficient varied from 0.38 to 0.78 with a mean of 0.57 for the five IRs and 0.62 to 0.74 with a mean of 0.68 within the three transects. Compared with earlier studies, the TTOP modelling results show greater accuracy. The results provide more detailed information on the permafrost distribution and basic data for use in future research on the Tibetan Plateau permafrost.

The T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain (TIM) family is associated with autoimmune diseases, but its expression level in the immune cells of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients is not known. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the expression of TIM-3 mRNA is associated with pathogenesis of SLE. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis (qRT-PCR) was used to determine TIM-1, TIM-3, and TIM-4 mRNA expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 132 patients with SLE and 62 healthy controls. The PBMC surface protein expression of TIMs in PBMCs from 20 SLE patients and 15 healthy controls was assayed by flow cytometry. Only TIM-3 mRNA expression decreased significantly in SLE patients compared with healthy controls (P0.05). SLE patients with lupus nephritis (LN) had a significantly lower expression of TIM-3 mRNA than those without LN (P=0.001). There was no significant difference in the expression of TIM-3 mRNA within different classes of LN (P>0.05). Correlation of TIM-3 mRNA expression with serum IgA was highly significant (r=0.425, P=0.004), but was weakly correlated with total serum protein (rs=0.283, P=0.049) and serum albumin (rs=0.297, P=0.047). TIM-3 mRNA expression was weakly correlated with the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI; rs=-0.272, P=0.032). Our results suggest that below-normal expression of TIM-3 mRNA in PBMC may be involved in the pathogenesis of SLE.

Potato virus X coat protein (PVXCP) is, through communication with host proteins, involved in processes such as virus movement and symptom development. Here, we report that PVXCP also interacts with the precursor of plastocyanin, a protein involved in photosynthesis, both in vitro and in vivo. Yeast two-hybrid analysis indicated that PVXCP interacted with only the plastocyanin transit peptide. In subsequent bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays, both proteins were collocated within chloroplasts. Western blot analyses of chloroplast fractions showed that PVXCP could be detected in the envelope, stroma, and lumen fractions. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that grana were dilated in PVX-infected Nicotiana benthamiana. Furthermore, virus-induced gene silencing of plastocyanin by prior infection of N. benthamiana using a Tobacco rattle virus vector reduced the severity of symptoms that developed following subsequent PVX infection as well as the accumulation of PVXCP in isolated chloroplasts. However, PVXCP could not be detected in pea chloroplasts in an in vitro re-uptake assay using the plastocyanin precursor protein. Taken together, these data suggest that PVXCP interacts with the plastocyanin precursor protein and that silencing the expression of this protein leads to reduced PVXCP accumulation in chloroplasts and ameliorates symptom severity in host plants.

Various advancements have been made in the development of [YBa.sub.2][Cu.sub.3][O.sub.x] (YBCO) second generation HTS conductor scale-up at superpower. These conductors are found to exhibit very high values of the critical current.

The effect of carbon content on the formation, structure and magnetic properties of melt-spun Nd2Fe14(BC)/alpha-Fe nanocomposite magnets with nominal compositions Nd8Fe86B(sub 6-x)C(sub x) (x = 0, 2, 4, 5, 6) is examined. The glass-forming tendency of as-spun Nd8Fe86B(sub 6-x)C(sub x) (x = 0, 2, 4, 5, 6) ribbons declines with the progressive increase in carbon concentration.

The results of an infiltration/defiltration experiment of a hydrophobic nanoporous silica gel are presented. A first-order thermodynamics analysis is carried out to obtain the confinement effect of nanopore walls and the mass and energy exchanges between liquid and gas phases in nanopores.

Reporting the progress in scale up of YBCO, coated conductor at IGC-superpower using PLD and MOCVD and IBAD-based substrates is presented. These regions are analyzed using several characterization tools and undulations in the cap layer over the IBAD buffer, which related to the rough areas.

This present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing fish meal with maggot culture, on growth performance, body composition, and antioxidant enzyme activity in hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus × O. aureus). Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated to contain graded levels of maggot culture (0%, 1%, 2%, 4% and 5%), which replaced 0% (the control), 20%, 40%, 80% and 100% fish meal, respectively. Each diet was randomly fed to triplicate groups of 30 hybrid tilapia (initial mean body weight: 2.12 ± 0.01g) per tank for 8 weeks. Fish were fed to satiation twice daily (08:00 and 16:00). Results showed that the inclusion of maggot culture did not significantly influence survival, weight gain, feed conversion rate, and morphological parameters of tilapia. Catalase and superoxide dismutase activity were not significantly affected by the supplementation of maggot culture. Also, the inclusion of maggot culture did not significantly influence moisture, protein, lipid, and ash contents of whole body and muscle. The radiation efficiencies of cylindrical and conical shells were investigated by using the statistical modal energy distribution analysis (SmEdA) and integrated FEM-SmEdA approaches. In cylindrical shell, three analytical algorithms were carried out, including SmEdA and two conventional approaches, i.e. the wave approach and the statistical energy analysis (SEA), and the results were compared with a former experimental one. SmEdA showed closest results with the experimental one, owing to its precise estimation of the coupling loss factors (CLF) which were further used to calculate the radiation efficiency. Furthermore, based on the analytical SmEdA, an integrated FEM-SmEdA algorithm is proposed. BACKGROUND: Coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO) is the end stage of coronary artery atherosclerosis. CTO revascularization can be performed by percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), bare metal stent (BMS) or drug-eluting stent (DES). It is important to scientifically evaluate the effectiveness of CTO interventional treatments. METHODS: Relevant studies of long term outcomes for several kinds of CTO treatments were examined. Data were extracted and assessed by two independent clinical experts, pooled and analyzed using meta-analysis. RESULTS: (1) Totally 8 articles comparing outcomes between PTCA and BMS treatment were analyzed. Follow-up variables such as mortality, subsequent coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG), re-occlusion, re-stenosis and target lesion revascularization (TLR) were analyzed by meta-analysis. Compared with BMS intervention, PTCA was associated with significant higher rate of re-occlusion, re-stenosis, subsequent PTCA and TLR. (2) Totally 12 articles compared long term outcomes between BMS groups and DES groups, encompassed 3605 CTO patients. During the long-term follow-up, six variables as major adverse cardiac events (MACE), myocardial infarction, all-cause death, subsequent CABG, accumulated MACE-free survival rate, re-stenosis/re-occlusion rate were analyzed by meta-analysis. Compared with patients in DES groups, patients in BMS groups had significant higher MACE, subsequent CABG, re-stenosis/re-occlusion rate, TLR, target vessel revascularization, while lower MACE-free survival rate. CONCLUSIONS: Incidence of re-occlusion, restenosis, subsequent PTCA and TLR were significantly lower for BMS implantation than for PTCA procedure. Putatively benign copy number variants (bCNVs) can be broadly defined as DNA copy number gains or losses that do not lead to a recognizable clinical phenotype. Detection of bCNVs in genomes of clinically healthy individuals is increasing with the widespread use of whole genome arrays of different resolutions and the use of sequence comparison methods. However, the role of bCNVs in human disease susceptibility and phenotype diversity is mostly unknown. In order to explore a potential role of bCNVs in the susceptibility to and/or pathogenesis of human neurodevelopmental disorders we examined the frequency and type of common bCNVs (detected in ≥2 independent control studies) amongst 221 subjects with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or intellectual disability (ID) in comparison to 40 controls using three array platforms of increasing resolution (Spectral Genomics (1 Mb), Agilent (0.03 Mb) and NimbleGen (0.01 Mb)). We determined that the number of bCNVs/subject, type and frequency of most common bCNVs were similar for both the test and control cohorts when the same array platform was used. The comparison of the ‘load’ of bCNVs (i.e. number/subject) to a standardized metric of phenotypic features (see de Vries et al., 2001) in 91 ASD subjects revealed that a phenotype score ≥4 is significantly more common (P < 0.05) in persons with an ASD having one or more bCNVs via 1 Mb array-CGH, whereas individuals without any recognizable bCNVs are significantly more likely to have a less complex phenotype and a score ≤3. Finally, we report 14 CNVs found amongst our ASD and ID cohorts that are infrequent in neurodevelopmentally normal controls and are of familial origin, thus comprising rare CNVs of unknown significance. Two of these rare familial bCNVs revealed variation in size when transmitted from parent to child, indicating genomic instability. The ongoing discovery and correlation of the pathogenic versus putatively benign underpinnings of the human genome, its inherent variability and potential gene, positional and epigenetic influences will continue to improve our understanding of genome plasticity and its influences on human neurodevelopmental disorders. Abstract  Roots of six Cucurbitaceae species were exposed to low (14 °C), middle (24 °C), and high (34 °C) temperatures while aerial parts of plants were maintained at ambient temperatures between 23 and 33 °C. The highest dry mass (DM), photon-saturated rate of net photosynthesis (P Nsat), and stomatal conductance (g s) were found at 14 °C in figleaf gourd and turban squash plants, at 24 °C in cucumber and melon plants, while bitter melon and wax gourd plants had lower DM, P Nsat, and g s at 14 °C than at 24 or 34 °C. Sub-or supra-optimum root temperatures did not induce photoinhibition but induced slight changes in the quantum efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (ΦPS2) and photochemical quenching (qp). Meanwhile, xylem sap abscisic acid (ABA) concentration followed a contrasting change pattern to that of g s. Thus the change in P Nsat was mainly due to the change in g s and roots played an important role in the regulation of stomatal behaviour by delivering increased amount of ABA to shoots at sub-or supra-optimum root temperatures. Abstract  The combined effects of water stress (WS) and low irradiance (LI) on growth, photosynthesis, osmotic adjustment, and lipid peroxidation were studied in dragon spruce (Picea asperata Mast.) seedlings grown under two water treatments (well watered, 100 % of field capacity, and water stressed, 30 % of field capacity) and two irradiances (HI, 100 % of full sunlight and LI, 15 % of full sunlight). WS reduced growth, chlorophyll (Chl) a and b contents, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and effective quantum yield of photosystem 2 (Y) but increased free proline and malondialdehyde contents. LI increased Chl contents and decreased Y, photochemical quenching (qP), and non-photochemical quenching (qN) under both water treatments. To apply mobile crystalline material 41 (MCM-41), which has a larger specific surface area than many other nanoporous silicas, for energy absorption, chlorotrimethylsilane treatment is performed to adjust the structure of inner surfaces of nanopores. As the treatment time is sufficiently long, the pore surface can be changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, leading to an energy absorption efficiency a few times higher than previously developed nanoporous-material-functionalized liquids. Understanding nanofluidic behaviours in energetically unfavourable confining environments is essential for the development of high-performance nanoporous energy absorption systems. In the current study, the effect of liquid composition on defiltration in a hydrophobic nanoporous silica gel is investigated experimentally using two types of admixtures: carbamide of a relatively small molecular size and sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate of a relatively large molecular size. By adding carbamide in the liquid phase, while the change in the solid-liquid interfacial tension is secondary, the defiltration volume can be lowered significantly, which can be related to the difficulties in gas phase formation and growth in nanopores. Background: During whole genome microarray-based comparative genomic hybridisation (array CGH) screening of subjects with idiopathic intellectual disability, we identified two unrelated individuals with a similar de nova interstitial microdeletion at 2p15-2p16.1. Both individuals share a similar clinical phenotype including moderate to severe intellectual disability, autism/autistic features, microcephaly, structural brain anomalies including cortical dysplasia/pachygyria, renal anomalies (multicystic kidney, hydronephrosis), digital camptodactyly, visual impairment, strabismus, neuromotor deficits, communication and attention impairments, and a distinctive pattern of craniofacial features. Dysmorphic craniofacial features include progressive microcephaly, flat occiput, widened inner canthal distance, small palpebral fissures, ptosis, long and straight eyelashes, broad and high nasal root extending to a widened, prominent nasal tip with elongated, smooth philtrum, rounding of the upper vermillion border and everted lower lips. Methods: Clinical assessments, and cytogenetic, array CGH and fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) analyses were performed. Results: The microdeletions discovered in each individual measured 4.5 Mb and 5.7 Mb, spanning the chromosome 2p region from 57.2 to 61.7 Mb and from 56 to 61.7 Mb, respectively. Each deleted clone in this range demonstrated a dosage reduction from two to one copy in each proband except for clone RP11-79K21, which was present in three copies in each proband and in four copies in their respective parents (two per each chromosome 2 homologue). Discussion: The common constellation of features found in the two affected subjects indicates that they have a newly recognised microdeletion syndrome involving haploinsufficiency of one or more genes deleted within at least a 4.5-Mb segment of the 2p15-16.1 region. These studies were conducted to determine whether dietary homoarginine, derived from guanidination of synthetic lysine, affects the measurement of apparent and true ileal amino acid digestibility in the pig and to determine the optimal ratio of o-methylisourea (OMIU) to free synthetic lysine in the guanidination reaction that produces homoarginine. In two preliminary experiments, specific amounts of lysine were weighed and added to a solution of 0·6 mol/l OMIU to produce OMIU to free synthetic lysine ratios of 2:1, 1·5:1, 1·4:1, 1·3:1, 1·2:1, 1·1:1 and 1·0:1. The mixture was incubated at a pH of 10·5 and a temperature of 20±1°C for 6 days. The highest yield of homoarginine (proportionately 0·995) was produced with an OMIU to free synthetic lysine ratio of 1·5:1. The serum concentrations of homoarginine and lysine were measured in two test pigs at various times after consuming a single meal containing either homoarginine or lysine. Blood samples were taken before and 0·5, 1·5, 2·5, 4·5, 6·0, 7·5, and 11·5 h after feeding. Thirty minutes after feeding the homoarginine-containing diet, the homoarginine concentration in serum was 0·013 mmol/dl, and increased to a maximum of 0·031 mmol/dl 1·5 h after feeding. Thirty minutes after feeding the lysine-containing diet, the serum lysine concentration was 0·011 mmol/dl and also reached its maximum concentration of 0·025 mmol/dl 1·5 h after feeding. The timing of the changes in concentration of homoarginine and lysine related to feeding were similar, which suggests that homoarginine is absorbed and metabolized in a similar manner to lysine. Six Large White×Landrace barrows, weighing 68·5±3·5 kg and fitted with a simple T-cannula at the distal ileum as well as a jugular vein catheter, were used to determine the effects of homoarginine on endogenous amino acid flows and apparent and true ileal amino acid digestibility. The experimental design was a doubly replicated 3×3 Latin-square design with the three treatments consisting of a lysine-free, zein-based diet and jugular infusion of a lysine solution; a lysine-free, zein-based diet supplemented with homoarginine; and a lysine-free, zein-based diet supplemented with l-lysine. There were no significant differences in endogenous ileal lysine flow for pigs receiving the different treatments (396·6, 407·6, and 360·4 mg/kg DMI, respectively, P=0·71). In addition, with the exception of phenylalanine (P=0·04), there were no significant differences (P>0·10) in the apparent and true ileal digestibility of crude protein and amino acids among the three treatments. Therefore, it would appear that the presence of dietary homoarginine, derived from guanidination of synthetic lysine, does not affect endogenous amino acid losses or the digestibility of crude protein as well as most amino acids. YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) coated conductors have been produced in 100 m lengths in pilot scale facilities established at SuperPower. In addition to scaling up coated conductors to long lengths with high critical current, we have modified the basic conductor for enhanced in-field performance and low ac losses. In addition, our coated conductors have been produced in practical configurations in 4 mm widths and with a surround topper stabilizer. The conductors were slit first to a 4 mm width and then subjected to electroplating to apply the copper stabilizer. Mechanical and electrical properties of the complete conductor have been elaborately tested. 61 m of 4 mm wide, surround copper stabilized conductor was provided to Sumitomo Electric Industries who fabricated a 1 m cable using the conductor. The cable exhibited the lowest ac losses reported with HTS conductors. SuperPower also fabricated a pancake coil with 7.4 m of coated conductor, which generated a maximum magnetic field of 0.28 T at 77 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Typically, in vitro methods used for estimating the amount of ileal digestible AA do not exhaustively digest samples, and arbitrary methods for separating digestible from indigestible protein are used. This may lead to over or underestimation of digestibility coefficients. A method that exhaustively digests proteins using pepsin and pancreatin was developed, and the first objective of this research was to confirm that exhaustive digestion was indeed appropriate and to determine the fractionation method for separating digestible from indigestible proteins. For this, three homoarginine-labeled animal proteins were prepared. Samples were subsequently digested in vivo and in vitro to determine which fraction should be considered indigestible, and in vitro followed by in vivo to determine whether the extent of digestion in vivo was improved by predigestion. In vivo, soluble but unabsorbed peptides were smaller than 1 kDa, suggesting that the size of soluble peptides is not what prevents their absorption. Thus, all in vitro-soluble proteins should be considered digestible. In vitro, 88 ± 3% of the soluble peptides were smaller than 1 kDa, with the remainder between 1 and 5 kDa, suggesting that in vitro digestion is less complete. Predigested samples were digested in vivo to the same size distribution as the nonpredigested samples. The second objective was to test whether in vitro digestibility assays based on these principles equaled in vivo digestibility. For this, digestibility data for 25 animal proteins were compared. Results showed a lack of correlation between lysine digestibility coefficients; however, across samples, the extent of digestion did not differ for lysine (P = 0.71), threonine (P = 0.26), methionine (P = 0.18), or valine (P = 0.66), whereas in vitro digestibility coefficients were lower for (the less water-soluble) histidine (P = 0.05), isoleucine (P < 0.01), leucine (P < 0.01), and phenylalanine (P = 0.05). In conclusion, in vitro digestibility assays should exhaustively digest proteins to mimic in vivo digestibility. All in vitro-soluble peptides could be considered digestible, because in vivo, no large soluble peptides were observed whose size prevented them from being absorbed. However, an in vitro assay based on these principles lacked precision for highly water-soluble AA, and underestimated digestibility for other AA. Then, a set of group values and factors used to estimate the Kowof halogen benzoic acids were obtained. For cable stayed bridges rain-wind induced vibrations of stay cables are probably one of the most widespread phenomenon. Aerodynamic countermeasures have been implemented to tackle such vibrations, but there is still not sufficient insight on the inherent mitigation mechanisms. To this goal, a numerical model, based on lubrication theory, was employed in order to study the coupled cable vibration response, aerodynamic forces, and formation and oscillation of rivulets for stay cables equipped with longitudinal ribs. Coupled equations governing the synchronous cable motion and water film evolution were established in order to understand the effects of several key parameters associated with the vibration mitigation performance of the ribs. Such parameters include the cable inclination angle, the wind yaw angle, the number and the height of the ribs. Computed results were successfully validated against experimental data. For the various studied cases, it was apparent that the ribs did not stop the formation of rivulets, but they could affect both their position and oscillation ranges. Through such a control action they could further affect the oscillation range and frequency content of aerodynamic forces, mitigating or not cable vibrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Satellite glial cells (SGCs) of dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) are activated in a variety of chronic pain conditions; however, their mediation roles in pain remain elusive. Here, we take advantage of proteolipid protein (PLP)/creERT-driven recombination in the periphery mainly occurring in SGCs of DRGs to assess the role of SGCs in the regulation of chronic mechanical hypersensitivity and pain-like responses in two organs, the distal colon and hindpaw, to test generality. We show that PLP/creERT-driven hM3Dq activation increases, and PLP/creERT-driven TrkB.T1 deletion attenuates, colon and hindpaw chronic mechanical hypersensitivity, positively associating with calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) expression in DRGs and phospho-cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) expression in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Activation of Plp1+ DRG cells also increases the number of small DRG neurons expressing Piezo2 and acquiring mechanosensitivity and leads to peripheral organ neurogenic inflammation. These findings unravel a role and mechanism of Plp1+ cells, mainly SGCs, in the facilitation of chronic mechanical pain and suggest therapeutic targets for pain mitigation.

Sexual dimorphism of visceral pain has been documented in clinics and experimental animal models. Aside from hormones, emerging evidence suggests the sex-differential intrinsic neural regulation of pain generation and maintenance. According to the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), up to 25% of the population have visceral pain at any one time, and in the United States 10–15 percent of adults suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Here we examine the preclinical and clinical evidence of sex differences in visceral pain focusing on IBS, other forms of bowel dysfunction and IBS-associated comorbidities. We summarize preclinical animal models that provide a means to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms in the sexual dimorphism of visceral pain. Neurons and nonneuronal cells (glia and immune cells) in the peripheral and central nervous systems, and the communication of gut microbiota and neural systems all contribute to sex-dependent nociception and nociplasticity in visceral painful signal processing. Emotion is another factor in pain perception and appears to have sexual dimorphism.

Abstract The mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo2 in mucosa and primary afferents transduces colonic mechanical sensation. Here we show that chemogenetic activation or nociceptor-targeted deletion of Piezo2 is sufficient to regulate colonic mechanical sensitivity in a sex dependent manner. Clozapine N-oxide-induced activation of Piezo2;hM3Dq-expressing sensory neurons evokes colonic hypersensitivity in male mice, and causes dyspnea in female mice likely due to effects on lung sensory neurons. Activation of Piezo2-expressing colonic afferent neurons also induces colonic hypersensitivity in male but not female mice. Piezo2 levels in nociceptive neurons are higher in female than in male mice. We also show that Piezo2 conditional deletion from nociceptive neurons increases body weight growth, slows colonic transits, and reduces colonic mechanosensing in female but not male mice. Piezo2 deletion blocks colonic hypersensitivity in male but not female mice. These results suggest that Piezo2 in nociceptive neurons mediates innocuous colonic mechanosensing in female mice and painful sensation in male mice, suggesting a sexual dimorphism of Piezo2 function in the colonic sensory system.

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer related mortality in women worldwide, with 80% of deaths occurring in developing countries. Effective cervical cancer screening in low-resource settings relies on the availability of appropriate screening technology. The OncoE6TM Cervical Test (E6 Test) represents the first test to directly detect elevated levels of the cancer causing viral E6 oncoprotein biomarker, and elevated expression of both E6 and E7 oncoproteins is necessary for cervical cell transformation to occur. The E6 Test format also offers several other key characteristics important for use in low-resource settings: the lateral flow format is easy to use and void of the need for complex equipment (no cold chain), it is amenable to screen and treat due to a short time from sample collection to results, and by detecting the cancer causing E6 oncoprotein it has a very high clinical specificity and positive predictive value (98.9% and 40.8% for CIN3+, respectively, as determined in a large clinical study in China). The E6 Test's clinical performance promises to result in a reduction of unnecessary over treatment of women with clinically irrelevant HPV infection and no pathology. The China clinical study also showed that a positive E6 Test result in HPV positive women with no visible disease predicts a 14.3% risk of CIN3 after only one-year of follow-up, while this risk is only 0.54% for HPV positive and E6 negative subjects. A summary on clinical performance of the OncoE6 TM Cervical Test will be presented, and implications of its use as a triage or primary screen, as well as use in detection of HPV induced neoplasia other than cervical cancer will be discussed. ABSTRACT Stochastic characteristics prevail in the process of short fatigue crack progression. This paper presents a method taking into account the balance of crack number density to describe the stochastic behaviour of short crack collective evolution. The results from the simulation illustrate the stochastic development of short cracks. The experiments on two types of steels show the random distribution for collective short cracks with the number of cracks and the maximum crack length as a function of different locations on specimen surface.
