The maintenance of corneal and normal eye function is necessary for the ocular health and integrity. Tear plays an important role in defense mechanism and nutrition of eye. The Schirmer tear tests (STT I, II) are widely used in ophthalmic examination to evaluate tear production as an aid to diagnose eye diseases. The aim of this study was to compare the different effect of anesthetic combinations and their action period on tear production in healthy rabbits. Forty healthy New Zealand female rabbits (mean weight 2.34 ± 0.67 kg), four months old, were used as materials. The animals were divided into four groups as propofol + sevoflurane (PS), midazolam + sevoflurane (MS), medetomidine + ketamine + sevoflurane (MKS), and control (C) groups, and each group contained 10 rabbits. The TP (tear production) was measured from left eyes before injectable anesthesia (0. min), during sevoflurane anesthesia at 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th min, and post anesthesia (after extubation) at 10th, 20th, 30th, 60th, 120th min and 24 h after in the study groups. In group C, at the same time intervals TP were also measured. In all groups statistical differences were recorded in different times of during and post anesthesia time periods. In post anesthetic time intervals the lowest TP values were detected in PS group. The new surgical techniques on eye surgery can require long general anesthesia periods. Extending of general anesthesia duration bring along risk factors such as perioperative dry eye syndrome. Perioperative dry eye syndrome (PDES) is the most common ophthalmologic complication of the general anesthesia. As a result of this study, PS anesthetic combination decreased the TP more than MS and MKS anesthetic combination during anesthesia. Although the present study put forward shows these results in rabbits, PS, MS and MKS anesthetic combinations may show different effects on TP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Changes in physiological and biochemical parameters after administration of medetomidine (MED), midazolam (MID), ketamine (KET) and a 2% of the inhalation anesthetic sevoflurane (SEVO), were investigated in domestic chickens. The anesthetic protocol began with a simultaneous intrapectoral injection (IP) of MED (50 μg/kg) and MID (0.5 mg/kg), followed by IP administration of 25 mg/kg of KET 10 min later. Anesthesia was then maintained for 30 min by 2% SEVO (with a 500 ml/min oxygen flow), using an Ayres T piece device. Heart and respiratory rates, cloacal temperature, reflex response and electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters were recorded at time zero (T0) before anesthesia (BA, baseline values), at time of MED + MID administration (T1), at time of ketamine injection (T2), 30 min after the start of SEVO inhalation (T3) and at recovery. Blood was also drawn at T0 and T3 to assess albumin, creatinine, glucose and liver enzyme concentrations. Cloacal temperature, heart and respiratory rates differed from baseline values at all time intervals during anesthesia (p < 0.05). Heart rate decreased following the MED + MID injection (at T1, T2 and T3), and partially recovered by the reanimation period. Reflex response also differed between time 0 and all anesthesia time points (p < 0.05). Mean amplitude of the P wave of the ECG was increased during MED + MID (T1) and KET (T2) anesthesia. The mean ST interval showed a large increase at T1, which was maintained throughout anesthesia (p < 0.05). Albumin, glucose and the ALT enzyme decreased between T0 and T3. In conclusion, the use of MED + MID + KET and SEVO as an anesthetic combination altered cardiorespiratory and biochemical parameters of chickens, but no life-threatening effects were observed as a result of these changes. In the present study; experimental defects were created in the rabbits at the urinary bladder and the repair of the defects with autogenous Fascia latae (FL) graft was provided. The aim was to evaluate whether the grafted urinary bladder capacity reached to the normal urinary bladder capacity. A total of 32, healthy male adult New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. The rabbits were randomly divided into four equal groups, i.e. group I, II, III and IV (control) according to the duration of euthanasia. Bladder capacities of the rabbits were measured preoperatively. Experimentally 2x2 cm defects were induced in the urinary bladder of the rabbits and repaired with autogenous FL graft in the first three groups. The rabbits in the control group underwent no surgical application. Postoperative bladder capacities of rabbits in the groups were measured at the end of 4th (group I), 8th (group II) and 12th (group III and IV), weeks before being euthanized. The urinary bladder capacities of control group were compared with those of the rabbits in the other groups. As a result, it was concluded that the autogenous Fascia latae graft might be used successfully in the urinary bladder with decreased capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Various types of wound frequently occur In horses due to trauma. The material of the study consisted of a 2 -year-old local breed of horse referred to the clinic of Erciyes University Veterinary Faculty Training and Research Hospital Surgery Department. At the examination of the horse, there was a deep, 20 cm long, open infected wound in the dorsal part of the right mandible, including Musculus (M) massater and M. zygomaticus muscles. An open infected wound and necrotic tissue of 15 cm in depth and 40 cm in width, covering the muscles of M. brachiocephalicus, M. sternocephalicus, M. sternothyrohyoideus and M. brachialis extending to the sternum in the pectoral region was detected. Open and infected wounds was available 4 cm wide at the level of the right and left carpal joints were detected on the limbs. The wound was initially treated with primer closure but the sutures of the chest region were opened after two days and open wound treatment was started. Recovery in the chest area was completed in 30 days. The wound in the facial and carpal joint regions, where the treatment was given through closure of the primer, lasted for two weeks to heal. In the present study, the results of the applications were reported in the treatment of deep, infected and chronic open wounds long after trauma which is formed in a horse. We believe that the treatment procedures and outcomes of chronic and deeply infected wounds observed in horses may contribute to veterinary clinical practice and the literature. The study material consisted of a Simmental calf suffering from bilateral ocular dermoid, stenose at left nare and tumor like growth at right nare. Since left eye was completely covered with dermoid, the left eye was extirpated. In the right eye, superficial keratectomy was applied. The tumor like growth tissue in the right nare was removed by surgical intervention. The wedge like segment was removed from the dorsal wall of the left nare for widening. As a result; the calf was followed for six months, and the dermoid in the right eye gradually diminished. the respiratory problems in the animal alleviated. The present case report has clinical value due to stenotic nare and presence of three different anomalies on the same animal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
