Abstract Steady-State Microbunching (SSMB) has been proposed as a concept to generate coherent synchrotron radiation at an electron storage ring. SSMB promises to supply kilowatt level average power radiation in the extreme ultraviolet regime, meeting the power level demands for lithography applications that presently cannot be fulfilled by established accelerator technologies. SSMB is under theoretical and experimental study, building on a proof-of-principle (PoP) experiment at the Metrology Light Source which previously showed the viability of the idea. Here we report experimental findings from systematic studies in the ongoing SSMB PoP experiment, where microbunching is generated from an energy modulation imposed by a laser of wavelength 1064 nm. The results confirm the expected dependence of the microbunching process on modulation amplitude and show that the influence of transverse-longitudinal coupling dynamics is as predicted. This confirmation of key parts of the SSMB theory establishes a solid footing for continuing the proof-of-principle efforts towards the goal of constructing a prototype SSMB light source facility.

Steady-state microbunching (SSMB) storage rings are an appealing option for high-power extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light sources. In this paper, we propose a generalized longitudinal strong focusing (GLSF) scheme to boost the average power of short-wavelength radiation from an SSMB source with a technical demand within the present reach. This scheme employs transverse-longitudinal coupling dynamics to produce steady-state ultrashort bunches and reduces the required modulation laser power significantly by exploiting the low vertical beam emittance in a planar ring. Linear beam dynamics are studied in detail, including bunch compression, modulation cancellation, and vertical-longitudinal decoupling. An instance of a linear lattice layout is given, and kW-level quasicontinuous-wave 13.5-nm EUV radiation can be achieved in a GLSF SSMB storage ring with 1-MW modulation laser power. We believe that the GLSF scheme can also be used in conventional storage rings for various purposes concerning beam manipulation.

Steady-state microbunching (SSMB) is a promising concept for generating high average power coherent radiation based on storage rings. To cover the shorter wavelength range, the bunched electron beam in conventional SSMB needs to be further compressed with advanced beam manipulation techniques. In this paper, several methods for enhancing the microbunching of SSMB have been discussed and compared. A new method termed dual-tilted-laser scheme (DTL) has been proposed. Numerical simulations with typical parameters of SSMB demonstrated that it has the potential of extending the wavelength coverage of SSMB to the EUV range based on DTL scheme with high repetition rate.
