Abstract Glaucoma poses a significant threat to vision, capable of causing irreversible damage and, in severe instances, leading to permanent blindness. Accurate optic cup (OC) and optic disc (OD) segmentation are essential in glaucoma screening. In this study, a novel OC and OD segmentation approach is proposed. Based on U‐Net, it is optimized by introducing cardinality dimensions. Moreover, attention gates are implemented to reinforce salient features while suppressing irrelevant information. Additionally, a convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is integrated into the decoder segment. This fusion hones in on effective information in both channel and spatial dimensions. Meanwhile, an image processing procedure is proposed for image normalization and enhancement. All of these increase the accuracy of the model. This model is evaluated on the ORIGA and REFUGE datasets, demonstrating the model's superiority in OC and OD segmentation compared to the state‐of‐the‐art methods. Additionally, after the proposed image processing, cup‐to‐disc ratio (CDR) prediction on a batch of 155 in‐house fundus images yields an absolute CDR error of 0.099, which is reduced by 0.04 compared to the case where only conventional processing was performed.

Abstract This study classifies the spatial distribution of heavy precipitation in summer (June–August) from 1979 to 2021 in the three provinces of Northeast China (TPNC) into two patterns by using the self‐organizing maps (SOM) neural network, and then quantitatively analyzes their moisture transport channels and sources using the Lagrangian model. The results show that the summer heavy precipitation in TPNC can be divided into the northern and southern patterns according to the distribution of the heavy precipitation. Both patterns of heavy precipitation are affected by the low‐level vortex west of TPNC, but the strength and shape of the low vortex are different. The northern pattern is mainly influenced by the westerly flow in the vortex in the mid‐high latitudes, which transports moisture from the upstream westerly region into TPNC. The southern pattern is mainly affected by the southerly jet stream southeast of TPNC, which conveys a large amount of moisture from the East Asian summer monsoon region into TPNC. In terms of the summer climatological mean, the northern pattern has a higher precipitation recycling rate, while the southern pattern has a lower recycling rate.

Abstract This study investigated the impacts of Tibetan Plateau vertical heating (TPVH) on the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) on the interdecadal scale since the beginning of the 20th century. The ASM, corresponding to TPVH, generally enhances on the interdecadal scale. In the upper troposphere, the upper‐level westerly and easterly jet streams shift northwards in Asia, with two meridional “southern low and northern high” wave‐like patterns dominating in East Asia and India, respectively. In the lower troposphere, the summer monsoonal airflow and convergence zone migrate northwards in Asia, and two meridional “southern high and northern low” patterns appear in East Asia and India, respectively. Thus, TPVH can strengthen the baroclinicity over northern East Asia and northern India, but weaken it over southern East Asia and southern India. Moreover, two anomalous meridional circulation cells are identified in East Asia and India, with ascending branches in their northern parts and descending branches in their southern parts. Eventually, the ASM strengthens, leading to a southern dry and northern wet pattern in East Asia and India.

Abstract Stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) has been proposed as a potential measure to alleviate global warming; however, uncertainties exist in its regional climate impacts. This study investigates the influence of the SAI on the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) by analyzing the G6sulfur simulation from the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project. Our results show that the SAI intensifies the Siberian high and Aleutian low, enhances the low‐level northerly winds along the coast of East Asia and deepens the East Asian trough during 2080–2099, reversing the weakening of EAWM in high‐emission Shared Socioeconomic Pathway scenario (SSP5‐8.5). Comparison between the G6sulfur and SSP5‐8.5 simulations indicates that, the SAI‐induced strong cooling in the central equatorial Pacific excites a poleward‐propagating Rossby wave train and strengthen the EAWM. Meanwhile, the negative vorticity advection in the middle troposphere and the radiative cooling over the Siberian high region caused by SAI also intensify the EAWM.

Abstract During January 21–24, 2016, most land areas in the Northern Hemisphere experienced extreme low temperatures. In North America, a historic snowstorm hit the northern and eastern United States. In East Asia, an unprecedented cold wave occurred and led to record‐breaking low temperatures in many regions. In this study, observational analyses revealed that both extreme events were triggered by a remarkable change in atmospheric circulation in the Arctic region in early January 2016, which switched from a concentric ring pattern to a dipole pattern. The dipole pattern resulted in two inverted Ω‐shaped circulation patterns that dominated the North America and East Asia. The inverted Ω‐shaped circulation patterns induced remarkable tropopause folding, which conveyed high‐potential‐vorticity cold air downwards from the lower stratosphere of Arctic to the middle and lower troposphere of North America, which increased cyclonic vorticity and negative height perturbations, and converged with moist air from the western North Atlantic and Gulf Stream, resulting in a severe snowstorm in the northern and eastern United States from 22 to 24 January. In East Asia, the tropopause folding transported high‐potential‐vorticity cold air downwards to the middle and lower troposphere of East Asia, resulting in the outbreak of a severe cold wave in East Asia from 21 to 24 January.

Compared with independent hot days or nights, compound hot extremes have more adverse effects on society. In this study, hot extremes are categorized into three types: independent hot days, independent hot nights and compound hot events combining daytime and nighttime hot extremes based on daily maximum and minimum temperatures. Using observations from the gridded dataset CN05.1 and experiments undertaken with 22 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models, we analyze the observed changes in summer hot extremes and compare them with model simulations over China between 1961 and 2014 and then conduct detection and attribution analyses of changes in compound hot events between 1965 and 2014 utilizing an optimal fingerprinting method. The results show that clear upward trends in the frequency and intensity of the three types of hot extremes are observed over China, with the largest trend occurring in hot nights for frequency and in compound hot events for intensity. The CMIP6 multimodel mean responses to all forcings agree well with the observed changes in the frequency and intensity of the three types of hot extremes. Anthropogenic (ANT) forcing can be robustly detected and separated from the response to natural (NAT) forcing in the frequency and intensity trends of compound hot events over China, and the attributable contribution of ANT forcing is estimated to be much larger than that of NAT forcing. Further analyses on the model responses to NAT, greenhouse gas (GHG) and ANT aerosol (AER) forcings indicate that GHG forcing is detectable in the observed increased frequency of compound hot events. By contrast, NAT and AER forcings cannot be detected, and their effects on the observed changes in compound hot events over China are generally negligible.

This manuscript describes a simple, environmentally friendly strategy for the rapid and large-scale growth of ultralong nanowires and nanoribbons of wurtzite CdTe. The nanowires and nanoribbons were prepared through the direct hydrothermal treatment of CdTe nanoparticles precoated on ⟨100⟩ Czochralski silicon, which did not involve complicated reactions. The well-crystalline nanowires and nanoribbons were grown along the [102] direction and were up to 100 μm long. The growth of the nanowires and nanoribbons was dominated by the mechanism of oriented attachment, which was clarified through the tracing of the temporal evolution of CdTe nanoparticles coated on the silicon substrate in the process of hydrothermal treatment. Furthermore, the proposed strategy was also effective in the preparation of anisotropic nanostructures of other II−IV group compounds (e.g., ZnO and CdSe). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
