Abstract

Calculations were performed to support method development for simultaneous production of Ni and Ir isotopes. The work scope included development of the physical target, irradiation configuration, and post-irradiation radiochemical separations. The assumptions of predictive models previously developed were refined based upon the precise experimental configuration selected, including Os target material and a set of stacked targets for concurrent production of Ni and Ir isotopes. Model predictions of the reaction cross sections with EMPIRE 3.2 (Herman in Nuclear Data Sheets 108:2655–2715, 2007) and implied isotopic yields are compared with proton beam irradiation measurements to refine model parameters and guide future experiments. Abstract

The detection of Ar is important for On-Site Inspections (OSI) for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty monitoring. In an underground nuclear explosion this radionuclide is produced by Ca( n,α)Ar reaction in surrounding soil and rock. With a half-life of 35 days, Ar provides a signal useful for confirming the location of an underground nuclear event. An ultra-low-background proportional counter developed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is used to detect Ar, which decays via electron capture. The irradiation of Ar gas at natural enrichment in the 3L facility within the Mark II TRIGA reactor facility at The University of Texas at Austin provides a source of Ar for the calibration of the detector. The Ar activity is measured by the gamma activity using an HPGe detector after the sample is removed from the core. Using the Ar/Ar production ratio and the Ar activity, the amount of Ar created is calculated. The Ar decays quickly (half-life of 109.34 min) leaving a radioactive sample of high purity Ar and only trace levels of Ar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In his life as a poet Pearse Hutchinson, now in his 84th year, has engaged with the poetry and the cultures of many countries in Europe; at the heart of this work is his poetry of Spain. From his first visit there in 1950 to today Hutchinson has been inspired by the landscapes, people and languages of Spain, translating from Catalan, Castilian and Galician and writing memorable poems based on his own experiences and the history and politics of a country which he loves. His work brought an awareness of Spanish culture, life and literature to a wide audience in Ireland. Hutchinson is recording a prose memoir based on his life and travels in Spain and Portugal.
