The author discusses approaches to economic history since the 1977 publication of 'One Kind of Freedom.' Issues include economic institutions, agricultural policy and race relations in the postreconstruction South.

Robert William Fogel has once again come up with a book which comes in four volumes. Entitled 'Without Consent: The Rise and Fall of American Slavery,' the books use the cliometric methods that have previously been utilized by Fogelin the much-criticized book 'Time in the Cross.' The book, whose main topic does not differ from 'Time in the Cross,' is a significant contribution to the field of economic history.

Argues that students must be taught historical methods in order to evaluate historical evidence, determine its relevance to a topic, and produce intelligent papers. Presents an exercise which requires students to write a historical essay based solely upon provided documents, illustrating that interpretations will vary despite common facts. (GEA)
